ast month the Sydney Convicts became the first gay rugby team to play at a professional match. The Convicts beat Macquarie University 30-12. The Convict’s history-making win helps set the stage for the 2014 Bingham Cup & Festival being hosted in Sydney this month. From August 24-29, Sydney will be hosting an entire week worth of fun and competitive rugby.. The Bingham Cup is important to us. Not only was Compete founded at the 2006 Bingham Cup but last year we renamed our Athlete of the Year Award the Mark Bingham Athlete of the Year Award in honor of the tournament’s namesake, 9-11 hero Mark Bingham. Mark’s mother, Alice Hoagland attended our 2013 Compete Sports Diversity Awards and presented the award to the winner, Chris Mosier. Nominations are open for the 2014 Mark Bingham Athlete of the Year. You may nominate yourself or a deserving friend or teammate by visiting us at competenetwork.com/aoty. This year the selection committee includes Olympian Blake Skjellerup, MMA Fighter Fallon Fox, GLAAD director of news Ross Murray— and me! Sports Diversity Hits a High in August
F
@CompeteConnie
or many athletes August signals the wind-down of summer sports and the preparation for fall sports to take over. But this is an especially important month for multiple sports and sports fans in the Cleveland and Akron areas. In addition to the announcement that hometown boy LeBron James is coming back to the Cavaliers, it’s also finally time for the ninth Gay Games, the world’s largest sports and cultural festival, to begin. In the true spirit of sports diversity the festival offers 36 different sports and cultural events, all based on its founding principles of “Participation, Inclusion and Personal BestTM.” All of us at Compete offer our hearty congratulations to everyone who is participating as an athlete or fan as well as to the huge number of behind-the-scenes staff and volunteers who have made all this possible! This month’s issue features an interview with the wildly popular fitness personality Davey Wavey. Is it even possible that there’s a person alive who hasn’t seen his picture or one of his videos? And then there’s an interview with openly gay Arizona State University football player Chip Sarafin. He’s an interesting guy with a goal of using his medical engineering degree to design safer sports equipment once he graduates with his master’s degree. Our travel column offers wonderful information on Philadelphia for those of you planning to play or attend the National Gay Flag Football League’s Gay Bowl XIV there in October. And for any women soccer players in the Los Angeles area wanting to be part of a team, the West Hollywood Soccer Club is looking to once again have a women’s or a co-ed team, so check them out. In light of the continuing controversy over the use of the Washington Redskins’ logo and other team logos and mascots some view as racist and demeaning, our managing and community editors offer their opinions in our Face-Off column. We ask you to join in—share your opinion with us. Write a letter to the editor and send it via email, Twitter or Facebook—let us know where you stand on this hot-button issue. One thing’s for sure, sports fans—this August is anything but dull and boring! Keep Smiling,

THE QUESTION Joshua Wyrick
Given the controversy over the logos for the Washington Redskins, the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves, should professional team logos that some consider to be racist and demeaning be changed?
Managing Editor @CompeteJoshua
Ty Nolan
Community Editor @CompeteTy
CHANGE IS A SLIPPERY SLOPE
THE PROBLEM IS POWERLESSNESS
Some words hold power; some of them once meant something to someone but now the meanings have changed. Time progresses as does language and how we use it to communicate. It is important that the majority decide how the power of offensive words should be used and whether something is offensive or not. One of the NFL’s oldest and most recognizable teams, the Washington Redskins, has been involved in a controversy with several Native American groups that have sued the organization over use of the name. And the U.S. Patent office has now revoked the team’s trademark. Many of these same groups have also sued the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. The groups claim that the history behind these names and logos (the Redskins and Indians both have Native American caricatures as mascots) recalls a dangerous and racist time in American history. These groups are correct in this vein—American history is dark and dirty. We are a warring nation built upon continued conflict and nothing can change that fact. What they are wrong about is what these objects represent. The original name of the Washington Redskins happened to be the Washington Braves. Brave is a term for a skilled Native American warrior. During the Native American wars of early American history the braves were a fearsome force, lauded for their courage and ferocity in times of danger. Just like today’s football players whom we respect for these same values—a 200-pound running back going headlong into a 340-pound mountainous linebacker, for example. It is also worth noting that the Washington Redskins (as they were later renamed at the behest of the owner) was the first team in the league to integrate by drafting the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy, Ernie Davis in 1962. If we change these names and logos, where does it stop? The Kansas City Chiefs must change their name as well, now include hundreds of college teams, and hey—I have Nord in my blood and find the Minnesota Vikings logo offensive—change that while you’re at it.
In my first semester of graduate school I saw the latest mortality rate reports for Native American males. The average age was 45. The day I read that report I wasn’t old enough to order a drink in a bar – but I discovered I was already, by the report’s findings, “middle-aged.” I often think of that report when new demographics come out. I belong to a racial group with the highest rate of poverty in the United States. Statistics show our population has one of the highest rates of suicides and the second highest death rate due to drugs. The number of Native Americans who don’t complete high school is 127.3 percent higher than the rate of comparable White adults. Bottom line? For the vast majority of Native Americans we have a huge scoop of scary stuff on our plates every day. Compared to what’s already there, including a frightening rise in meth addiction on our reservations, whatever a wealthy White man chooses to call his professional football team has a very low priority in terms of generating rage. I’ve been middle-aged since I was twenty. I’m mostly raged out. But the sense of powerlessness is part of the other problems Natives face. I used to teach my college students that “When you tell a community what it’s to be called, that’s colonialism. When a community tells you what it wants to be called, that’s empowerment.” When team owner Dan Snyder deliberately uses words he knows are offensive to many people—not just Native ones— it really says something about him, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s why after two weeks the blogger Snyder hired to defend him resigned. The real problem? It’s about powerlessness. Even Snyder would never use “Sambo” as a symbol for a team he owned. There’s a reason why the LGBT community celebrates Gay Pride and homophobes refer to a homosexual agenda. Words have power. There’s a reason to leave “Redskins” on the trash heap of history. It’s 2014 and the “Wild Wild West” is just a cheap show of stereotypes where Native Americans have left the stage to work alongside all other Americans. Face-Off is a monthly feature where hot-button issues will be discussed Op-Ed by our most talented writers.

Davey Wavey by Joshua Wyrick
The Internet has a new fitness guru—and he hates clothes. Davey Wavey, star of daveywavey.tv has parlayed the story of his masturbating neighbor from Toronto into Internet stardom, but not how you’d imagine. Formerly a self-confessed chubby kid, Davey found his happiness in fitness and nutrition. Now he provides everything from sexual advice to food advice and anything you can imagine in between. With over 150 million YouTube views and tens of thousands of subscribers to his channel, people are watching.

Q&A
Compete: Explain how the Internet has changed your life—from the Youtube videos to the online dating. Davey: Without the Internet, I can’t even imagine how different my life would be. I’d never get laid. I’d have no job. And I’d have so much more free time from not checking Instagram. What is one form of exercise you couldn’t possibly do without? Running. I love running hard, doing sprints and racing up hills. No matter how hard or heavy that I lift, I don’t feel like I’ve had a workout until I break a sweat from running.
How involved are you with the content that is published on your website? It’s all mine! I write every word of it. As it turns out, I have a lot to say—and fitness is something about which I’m really passionate. How important do you think content creators such as yourself are to the future of the Internet and how business is done worldwide?
What do you think your Twitter profile means when it says “I’m basically the gay Wikipedia”?
I think it’s a mixed bag. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with dating apps. On one hand, it’s a great way
The Internet is a really great source for gay people to become more informed. Unlike straight people, most of us can’t turn to mom or dad to learn the birds and the bees of us of gay life, culture and sex. But I’m happy to be that person.
“Unlike straight people, most can’t turn to mom or dad to learn the birds and the bees of gay life, culture and sex.”
There’s no doubt that the Internet is the future. And it’s changing everything. We’ve seen how the Internet re-shaped the music industry and how it’s already changing the way we watch our favorite TV shows. I can’t help but think that we’re just getting started—and I couldn’t be more excited to see where things go!

What do you think of social/dating apps like Grindr, etc.? Do these apps hurt or help the dating landscape?

for people to connect. Especially people like myself, who don’t have much interest in going to clubs or bars. But on the other hand, I think these apps have really hurt our attention span and ability to focus. It becomes very easy to move from one shiny object to the next.
How did you parlay viral success into actual success?
My videos have become increasingly popular over time. It’s been great—because it’s given me time to adjust and build a talented, supportive team. They’ve helped me turn my YouTube success into a business. It’s great to do what you love, and to be able to support yourself doing it!

“When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. I’d spend hours sketching out homes in notebooks.” Who is your favorite architect/what is your favorite building? When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. I’d spend hours sketching out homes in notebooks. Clearly, the universe had other plans … but my favorite architect is Frank Lloyd Wright and my favorite building is Falling Water. What, in your mind, is the biggest hurdle LGBT Americans face today in the workplace? Fortunately, I think things keep getting better. Each year brings progress— but there are still a lot of obstacles that LGBT individuals face in many aspects of their lives. Last I heard, there are 29 states where you can legally fire someone simply because they’re gay. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a pretty big hurdle. Where would you like the next year of your career to go? I think I’m slowly moving into a producer and manager role. Being in front of the camera is something that I’ll always love and probably always do—but I think my biggest strength is being behind camera, producing content and cultivating talent. If you could give one piece of advice to anyone struggling with obesity/laziness, what would it be? Get help. There’s no reason that you need to do it alone, and there’s no shame in relying on the expertise of a trained professional. If working with a trainer isn’t an option, get educated. There are a lot of great resources that are free—like my fitness blog. That’s a great place to start.

Who, in your mind, is the most impressive athlete both on and off the field today? Well, I think Olympic diver Tom Daley’s butt is pretty impressive. Does that count? What is the current status of your love life? Believe it or not, I like to keep some areas of my life sacred. Though a lot of my life is on the Internet for the world to see, my dating life tends to be pretty private for a lot of reasons. If I’m ever actually dating a guy seriously, there’s a good chance that he’ll never be in my videos.
Do you think high-profile athletes (or others, in that respect) have a ‘responsibility’ to come out, in the interest of raising awareness and helping the cause? Coming out is a very personal decision and I understand that everyone has their own path. Some people come out sooner and some people come out later. I feel a personal responsibility to my audience. When you have an audience, you have power. And with power comes responsibility. You can reach Davey and his blog at daveywavey.tv and on nearly every social media platform.

CUTTING AN IMPOSING FIGURE ON THE FIELD, THE Arizona Sun Devil’s outside linebacker #79 weighs over three hundred pounds and holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the same field while preparing for his MCAT exam, and participates in many off-field community outreach activities. Oh, and he’s gay. “I WAS ACTUALLY UNDECIDED IF I WAS GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA (U OF A) OR ARIZONA STATE (ASU),” says Edward “Chip” Sarafin of his post-high school plans as he twirls the rainbow-gemmed ring given to him by his boyfriend. “U of A had a little more interest in me, but I took a chance and came down to [Tempe] to talk with Frank Kush who was able to get me a walk-on position at the time,” announced Sarafin. “I had to actually change my major,” Sarafin says of the move to ASU’s Tempe campus. “I was really undecided at the time … because I wanted to go into nursing like my Mom.” Sarafin later decided to try biomedical engineering, a field which he says very few people knew anything about five years ago. Biomedical engineering has now become a premier field of research, and professional sports is one of the areas people like Sarafin are helping to move forward at a blistering pace. “We call ourselves like, the jack of all trades of all engineers,” Sarafin says of his chosen area of study. “More and more, you’re seeing a lot of football helmets integrated with sensor technology … which is really big because it gives doctors the ability to see the hits that players are taking as they happen.” Sarafin quickly adds that Arizona State was one of the universities that worked most closely with equipment manufacturers TGen and Riddell, the world’s biggest, to develop new pads that more accurately determine the force and location of sensitive impacts. “That’s actually what I’m working on currently with Dr. Labelle (biomedical engineering professor at ASU), a carbon fiber helmet for football players that would be both lightweight and incredibly sturdy,” Sarafin remarks. Sarafin participates in many community outreach programs as well. “This thing I’m working on … is actually education in the lower levels of sports,” Sarafin says of his recent work. “Kids often think that you can play through a concussion like a sprained ankle and that just isn’t true … it’s actually one of the most serious injuries you can have.” This attitude is carried throughout professional sports as well. “Football players are incredibly tough, but being that way makes us more vulnerable to the ignorance of a serious injury and how it could affect us in the long term,” Sarafin comments.
Echoing his statement is Jadaveon Clowney, the number one overall pick in this year’s NFL draft who has publicly admitted to playing with a sports hernia through much of his most recent college season. As more NFL players reach senior citizen status, a rash of suicides has affected the landscape of professional football. “The ultimate goal is to be more proactive about these types of injuries and diagnose them before they ever get to that point,” Sarafin continues of his recent endeavors in the biomedical field. Of his work with the Pat Tillman Foundation, Sarafin works again with developing athletes to teach them the kind of acceptance they will have to learn to be successful on the field and in life. “It’s so important that we teach them this acceptance when they are young so when they actually experience and meet these different people in real life—and they will—they are adequately prepared,” Sarafin concludes. Of his local Arizona high school, Sarafin says “I went to school at Highland High, and it is definitely not the most diverse school. It’s probably 80 percent Mormon and 80 percent Caucasian. So there is definitely a disparity there in the types of people that you meet. I know a lot of times a lot of people who were bullied because they were different were actually bullied by athletes, and that made me really angry … the athletes are supposed to be the role models, the heroes of the community ...,” Sarafin waxes. Of his own coming out, Sarafin began telling his teammates last spring. “It was really personal to me, and it benefitted my peace of mind greatly.” Sarafin says that he told his teammates mostly for himself and because he wanted them to hear it straight from him instead of the college rumor mill that all players find themselves subjected to at some point. The Sun Devil has greater aspirations than football, however. “My ultimate goal after I get my master’s is to eventually become a neurologist … I wish ASU had a neurology school!” Sarafin says through a grin. As for Sarafin’s heroes, former Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kurt Warner tops the list. “He is my ultimate icon … a great family man, the types of things he has done for the community are incredible.” As for role models, Sarafin himself makes a great example. “Someone who gives back to everyone, and loves his family … that is the type of man I want to be.”

WEST HOLLYWOOD SOCCER CLUB GROWING BY CONNIE WARDMAN ALTHOUGH THE WEST HOLLYWOOD SOCCER CLUB will celebrate its 30th birthday next year, it has been going through a new growth period over the last several years. It recently expanded its size from two teams—the Eclipse and the Los Angeles Suns—to four with the addition of the Nova FC and another yet un-named team, according to club president Jamie Gin. At one point in the club’s history they had a female team, something Jin says they would love to start again. So they are looking for women who love to play soccer to join the club and form either a co-ed team or a women’s team. Teams play in both the Santa Monica Adult Soccer League and the Los Angeles Municipal Soccer League. They and their traveling team, consisting of the club’s advanced players as well as those who want to travel, are all making their mark. Collectively, they won this year’s Sin City Shootout tournament in January, went undefeated in the City League in June and won back-to-back championships in Division II of the New York Indoor Classic in April. And they’re set to participate in the Folsom Classic next month in San Francisco as well as the Provincetown Classic in October in Provincetown, Massachusetts. THE LOS ANGELES SPARKS HAVE A LOT OF ‘FIRSTS’ BY JOSHUA WYRICK IN 1997 THEY OPENED UP THE SEASON WITH the first WNBA game ever played, veteran Spark Penny Toler scored the league’s very first points and they also are the holders of the league’s very first loss. After a rough beginning, the start of the new millennium meant great things for the Sparks and their fans—as well as a couple new firsts. Lisa Leslie became the first WNBA player to dunk the ball during a game and the Sparks dominated nearly every team in the league. During the 2000-2001 season, the Sparks eliminated the Charlotte Sting for their very first WNBA Championship. The very next season they would trounce the New York Liberty for their second. The next few years would prove difficult for the Sparks as they would struggle through nearly every season, barely making a playoff berth in each of them. 2007 was most assuredly the worst year in Sparks’ history as they would fail to make the playoffs (and have the league’s worst record) for the very first time since the league’s 1998-1999 season. The Los Angeles Sparks are a pivotal organization within the WNBA as they play in the league’s biggest market and one of the most lauded arenas in all of basketball—the Staples Center. Despite this advantage, women’s basketball still struggles to gain a hold on the basketball market. In January of 2014 majority owner Paula Madison announced that the team would be absorbed by the league as her family had lost $12 million since 2007 through endeavors with the Sparks. The team is now owned by the Guggenheim Partners, a vague “financial services” company which manages more than $210 billion (that’s with a B) worth of assets. New initiatives include the world’s first advertising campaign from a professional sports team to cater specifically to the LGBT community as well as removing the Farmer’s Insurance logo from their uniforms after the naming rights expired. While the previous decade has been difficult for WNBA players, coaches and fans alike, three special players have appeared to breathe new life into the arenas. The Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner, Chicago Sky’s Elena Delle Donne and the Tulsa Shock’s Skylar Diggins entered the league two seasons ago and the sport has seen a 28 percent increase in

viewership since then as well as a one percent increase in overall attendance. While the Sparks have battled to a 7-11 record so far this season, bright times are surely ahead for a league that is primed to grow again next year as the digital era takes hold and fans are given greater opportunities for league exposure than ever before.

RACE DAY
by Joshua Wyrick
E
VEN AT FIVE IN THE MORNING the sun shines down like every mid-July in Arizona. 95 degrees but no one here seems to care. Every person is clothed in some sort of elastic and high-tech running shoes donned every foot. Pedestrians stretch out as a quad-copter drone flies overhead, capturing all the action from an aerial view. There are three minutes and seven seconds until the race starts and hearts are beginning to beat faster until the timer hits zero. Then, the gun goes off. It only takes half an hour to run five kilometers (3.1 miles) but it’s a journey that isn’t soon forgotten. All ages participate so it can be a fun family affair as well. Some are intense competitors, some are simple hobbyists and some haven’t run a mile in years—but all are welcome. At Compete, we encourage competition at every level. Friendly competition can help you make new friends as well as set personal goals and provide motivation for things you never thought you would do (like waking up to run at 5 a.m. on a Saturday!). With local companies like Start Line Racing (startlineracing.com) you can participate in events like the ones pictured here (a 5K through a beautiful desert trail at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Peoria) as well as much longer endurance races. StartLine racing also provides course timing and event set-up for many other events as well. Racing Calendar and Event Listing can be found at: startlineracing.com

ALL-STAR
BY BRIAN RAYMOND, OUT DESTINATIONS
OCTOBER FLAGFOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN PHILADELPHIA There are few cities with a richer American history than Philadelphia. The Old City District has not changed much since Ben Franklin walked its streets during the founding of this country. The city was Brian Raymond founded in 1682 as the “City of Brotherly Love” to demonstrate the Quaker ideal of religious tolerance as well as a city without walls or neighborhood borders. It was also the first city to rollout a tourism promotional campaign to the gay market. There is not a better time to visit this city than the cool autumn days during the gay annual flag-football championship tournament, Gay Bowl XIV, October 9th–12th, 2014. The host hotel, the Sheraton Downtown, will be full of gay footballers and fans. It is centrally located between the Gay Bowl fields to the northwest, the Old City District to the east, and the gay district to the south east. If you want to stay closer to the gay center, try the Alexander Inn. At the top of the list of things to do is visiting Independence Hall where the U.S. Constitution was written and the Declaration of Independence was signed. Nearby is the Liberty Bell Center, the home of Betsy Ross and the quaint cobblestonelined Elfreth’s Alley. On your way back to the Sheraton, stop at the Reading Terminal Market with over 80 unique food vendors housed in a former train shed. The market includes fresh seafood and produce, plus several Amish booths, and offers everything from quick snacks to sumptuous sit-down dinners. West of the Sheraton is the Franklin Institute created by Ben Franklin, a museum dedicated to scientific research and innovation. Just northwest of the Sheraton is Fairmount Park, the largest city park in the U.S., which is the site for Gay Bowl XIV. But Fairmount Park is also home to the renowned Philadelphia Museum of Art, the historic Mansions of Fairmount Park, and the Philadelphia Zoo. For something unique, visit the Macy’s across from City Hall and listen to one of the twice daily concerts from the largest functioning pipe organ in the world. This Wanamaker sevenstory organ features 28,604 pipes in 463 ranks which create an orchestra-like sound - a true wonder to enjoy. With its historic commitment to openness and tolerance, everyone feels welcome in Philly. To visit Philly or for help in planning your own or group travel, you can contact Brian Raymond at brian@OutDestinations.com or 866-217-2341.

Taking Care of Your Skin by Alfonzo Chavez
Face Cleanser If you’re using regular bar soap on your face, try this instead. Everardo Sanchez at West Hollywood’s The Gendarmerie Boutique & Spa recommends Dermalogica® Special Cleansing Gel (Retail $36, dermalogica.com). This is a general-purpose cleanser which is great for removing debris and sweat from your skin. For an added benefit, it includes calming balm mint and lavender to soothe your skin.
Hyaluronic Acid You want to hear a chorus singing Hallelujah? We recommend Image Ageless Total Pure Hyaluronic Filler (Retail $49.90, call 800-796-SKIN for locations). Hyaluronic acid holds 100 times its weight in water to keep the skin hydrated and filled in with an added benefit of assisting other products in penetrating deeper into the skin.
Vitamin C “It lightens, tightens and brightens,” says Jillian Fenton at Aura Salon & Day Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. That pretty much says it all. Jan Marini Research® C-Esta (Retail $93, janmarini.com) can be used all over the face (with the exception of the upper eyelid) and is great for evening skin tone and dark spots. Jan Marini Research 5-step Skin Care Management Systems are also available.
SPF If there is only one product you use on your face it should be an SPF. An SPF protects the skin from the sun’s UV rays. These are the rays that burn your skin, cause aging and potentially lead to cancer. Eminence Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 30 (Retail $58, eminenceorganics.com) was recommended by Erica McLaurin at Leidan Mitchell Salon & Spa in Phoenix and Chandler, Arizona. It contains Eminence’s own GigaWhite™ and Biocomplex to brighten the skin and reduce wrinkles.

FITNESS
STRONG TO THE CORE BY MARK MOON THE NUMBER ONE QUESTION I STILL GET ASKED by clients has to be this: What is the secret to getting good abs? The secret to this success can be found by strengthening the muscles that form your center of gravity—the core. To get a strong core you need to train the muscles underneath the abdominals, the lower back and the fibres that surround the hip. These core muscles help maintain proper body posture and hold the spine in an upright position—and they are vital for lower back strength. Strengthening your core muscles will also help indirectly with weight loss. The stronger your core, the harder you can train without getting any injuries. Remember that core training should be a compliment to a balanced resistance and cardio training regime. Incorporate these exercises into your workouts three times a week and quickly see improvements. You need to select different exercises each time you work out, but here are three of the basics to get you started:
3. SIT UPS Lie on your back with arms by your side and knees bent. Reach towards the feet as you sit all the way up. Keep your spine slightly rounded throughout the movement. 15 reps For your FREE 8-minute abs instant download visit markmoonfitness.com.
1. PLANK Lie on your elbows and straighten your legs while pressing your toes against the floor. Distribute your weight evenly across your forearms and toes and keep your back straight. Hold for 45 seconds
2. REVERSE BRIDGE Lie on your back and place your hands by your sides with your knees bent so your shins are vertical to the floor. Lift your hips off the floor as high as you can and squeeze your butt. 12 reps Mark is the creator of the online health, fitness and lifestyle program GET FIT FAST: The Complete Workout System. He is also a resident trainer on USA digital workout platform FitFusion and co-owner of Food Fitness Lifestyle (www.foodfitnesslifestyle.com), an online platform dedicated to healthy lifestyle options with their own brand of organic raw protein powder.
