The Ride of Her Life
s the publisher of Compete Magazine I am always on the phone learning more about sports and the LGBT community. Recently I was speaking to Kristin Flickinger, Associate Director, AIDS/LifeCycle (ALC) about her organization and the mission of ALC. In case you don’t already know, ALC is a fully supported, seven day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Co-produced by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the annual ride is designed to advance their shared interest to reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/ AIDS. ALC is a very successful fund raiser for the shared cause of these two organizations. But in talking to Kristin I discovered that ALC has a lack of female riders,-something they would like to change. After telling Kristin that I would really like to meet a female rider to find out why she participates in ALC, I was introduced to a very special woman, Barbara Schwerdt. When I read Barbara’s biography I was a bit surprised to find out that she completed her first ride in 2012 – at the age of 50! Barbara made her first ride as a tribute to her best friend Chris who died in 1998 after his HIV developed into AIDS. But Barbara didn’t ride alone; her husband joined her and together they raised more than $10,000. Barbara plans on riding again this year and currently trains every week. It is a tough workout but very satisfying. Quoting Barbara, “When I first signed up to do the ride, someone told me it would be an unbelievable and life-changing event. They were absolutely right. I can’t wait to experience AIDS/LifeCycle again.” Compete supports the efforts of everyone at ALC – from the riders, to the staff, to the volunteers and we look forward to cheering them all on again this June. You can help support sports, people and the AIDS/ LifeCycle by visiting their website at www.aidslifecycle.org. Sport On,

From Rodeo to Racing – It’s a Great Issue
Compete Online Offers Even More Sports Diversity Stories and Pictures
ell saddle up boys and girls – it’s our rodeo issue and as you’ll see, a great time was had by all. The rodeo offers lots of exciting athletic competition. And like many other sports, part of its mission is to support worthwhile LGBTQ charities in their various regions. A big difference is that the rodeo is also about preserving and supporting the best of the country western lifestyle. For many of us who grew up in cities and towns far removed from the world of farms and ranches, the rodeo gives us a chance to experience our dream of growing up to be cowboys and cowgirls. There’s lots of great “stuff” in this issue. We go from four-legged horsepower for the rodeo to a story on horsepower of the mechanized variety – the TORC Off-Road Championship. Known as a collision between action sports and motorsports, it’s 900 horsepower TORC trucks competing on some of the best tracks in the U.S. -- can you say varoom, varoom?. There’s an update on Gay Games 9 and the latest in the ongoing concussion controversy, something all athletes need to know about. But we’re also adding a new travel column to Compete. This is in addition to our Bedroom Sports column that debuted last issue where our community editor and experienced counselor Ty Nolan answers your sexual health questions. We always have a great time putting together each issue for you and this one is no different. Now as we prepare for the April Swimsuit Issue we hope you’ll be able to join us for our swimsuit shoot and be part of the fun. We love having you involved.
e’re excited to bring you even more stories on our newly designed website – still found at www.competenetwork.com. Additional March articles you can find there are:

Howdy, Pardner For the 29th year, the Arizona Gay Rodeo (AGRA) hosted cowboys and cowgirls last month for a weekend of competition, entertainment, a renewal of old friendships and the opportunity to make new ones. Arizona is one of the five founding states that formed IGRA, the International Gay Rodeo Association that provides structure to the competition. IGRA-sanctioned rodeos not only standardize amateur rodeo competition but are also committed to preserving the countrywestern lifestyle.

The AGRA rodeo is traditionally held at the Corona Ranch and Rodeo Grounds, a unique venue that’s a Mexican Charro rodeo arena with an attached dance hall located in the Phoenix area. You don’t need to have grown up on a farm or ranch to fall in love with the rodeo and its warm and welcoming lifestyle. When you add in the excitement of the competition, hanging out with friends (both old and new), checking out the vendors, the food, adult beverages as well as the music and dance entertainment all three nights and the awards ceremony on Sunday, you know you’ve always got a great weekend ahead of you! And for many, the one of the best parts is the organization’s ability to support some worthwhile local charities.

Go All Out at 2014’s Largest Inclusive Sporting Event
T
housands of people from around the globe are readying to go all out at the 2014 Gay Games – the world’s largest inclusive sporting event this year – that will happen August 9-16 in Cleveland+Akron, Ohio. Whether they’re training (or thinking about training), planning their travel, organizing the events or getting the word out, the Gay Games 9 team is large and growing larger every day. Twenty-something Aliona Netesova was one of the first to join. She registered to participate in 2012 just months after running her first marathon. When she marches into the opening ceremony on August 9, she will be the second Lithuanian to ever compete at the Gay Games. “Lithuania is a post-Soviet country with a high level of homophobia. LGBT people stay in the closet, which is why support and visibility is so important,” she says. Netesova hid her sexual orientation when she played in a Lithu-

anian women’s football (soccer) league when she was younger but now proudly competes as an out lesbian. “I hope that my participation in the Gay Games will help shape the LGBT sporting community in Lithuania,” Netesova says. She will run in the Gay Games marathon event. Runners will travel the first 13-mile circuit (marathoners will run twice) of the course of the annual Akron Marathon, named one of the top 50 marathons in the country.
CHOO CHOO TO 10K Akron also is home to a Gay Games first – a unique 10K road race. Runners (and spectators) can ride to the starting line on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway through the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Park, one of the top 10 most visited national parks in the country. “With everything that happens at the Games, we want to make sure participants and spectators have memo-
Quicken Loans Arena, photo courtesy of Positively Cleveland rable experiences such as starting a 10K like they’ve never done before or running a 5K with an audience of lions, kangaroos and giraffes,” says Rob Smitherman, sports and operations director of the 2014 Gay Games presented by the Cleveland Foundation. Lions, kangaroos and giraffes? Yes, you read that right. The 5K Gay Games participants will be running in the animals’ home – the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Smitherman says Road Race event participants can run in both the 5K and 10K for the same $70 event fee. Runners in the marathon/ half-marathon (event fee $105) also
can run in both road races at no additional charge. Runners are leading the path on registrations, too. As of midFebruary, Road Race and Marathon participants represent almost 10 percent of the total registrations. Almost 3,000 people had registered to participate in the Gay Games as of mid-February. They represent 46 states and 26 countries. Another 6,000 are expected to sign up to participate. General registration ends May 31. Late-fee penalties apply after that date. No registrations can be accepted after July 15 so final schedules can be created.
FROM RUSSIA WITH SUPPORT More than 140 Russians have begun the registration process, seeking to depart their country’s anti-gay laws for the week and come to the inclusive Gay Games. Smitherman says Gay Games 9 has been working with the Russian LGBT Sport Federation, which recently met with the U.S. ambassador in Russia to start the visa process. The Russian LGBT Sport Federation, which is producing its own Open Games in Moscow after the Olympics, is a key partner and the Gay Games is supporting its efforts. In late January, Gay Games 9, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), launched a special promotion to support the Russian federation. Gay Games participants who use the code “HRCSOCHI” will save $10 on their registration and have $20 donated to the federation to support Russian athletes. “The Human Rights Campaign, which is now a platinum sponsor of the Gay Games, helps further
strengthen the reach of the Games’ principles of participation, inclusion and personal best,” says Tom Nobbe, executive director of Gay Games 9. HRC’s involvement extends far beyond the Sochi discount donation as it promotes the Games in its Athletes for Equality program and plans to be at the Gay Games’ Festival Village. And when the 2014 Winter Olympics kicked off in Sochi so did the Gay Games 9 campaign to “Go All Out.” For the first time in Gay Games history, a commercial aired on broadcast television timed to debut during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics. A 30-second USA version aired on NBC affiliates in key Ohio and nearby markets, while a hometown 60-second version aired in Cleveland. The commercial made its debut earlier in the day on YouTube and Facebook. “We weren’t anti-Sochi or antiOlympics. And it really wasn’t about the seconds of air time. It was about inspiring people to appreciate the inclusiveness of the Gay Games and recognize they too have an outlet to compete at the world’s most inclusive sporting event coming to Ohio this August,” Nobbe said. “We definitely saw interest jump significantly.” [Note: The commercials can be found on the home page of the Gay Games website (www.2014GayGames) or the Gay Games Cleveland YouTube channel (www.youtube. com/GG9Cleveland) or Facebook page (www. facebook.com/GayGamesCleveland).]
Another national partner, GLAAD, used the timing of the Olympics to announce its partnership with the Gay Games. The Games commercial spot was included in the news, garnering notice from Advocate.com and Hol-

Photo by Dmitriy Margoiln lywood Reporter who wrote about LGBT-related commercials during the Olympics. Like HRC, GLAAD’s involvement with the Gay Games goes much deeper. It is facilitating introductions to athletes and other key supporters of sports equality, and GLAAD is eager to help Games participants who desire to share their stories but may not be familiar with how to work with the media.
HEAVY MEDAL AND MORE Jamey Christoph’s “Go All Out” effort will end up around the necks of every participant at the Gay Games. His design was the winning one for the medals—all registrants receive a participation medal, while gold, silver and bronze versions will be awarded to the various sports events in each division. The specially crafted 3-inch medal is a key collectible for the ninth Gay Games, focusing on the host cities. The medal depicts Cleveland’s iconic skyscrapers, including the Terminal Tower, lift bridge and smokestacks. The medal also incorporates Akron’s viaduct bridge and blimp on the front, while tire treads circle the back (Akron is a giant in

the tire industry and known as the rubber capital of the world). While the medals are the static keepsake, memories will be made throughout the week at the sports and culture events as well as the parties, Festival Village, Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The thousands of participants will gather as a group for some fun pre-ceremony celebration and organize the parade of athletes at Cleveland’s Progressive Field (MLB stadium) before traveling the underground tunnel to arrive on the floor of Quicken Loans Arena (NBA venue) to the cheers of thousands of spectators. At the end of the week, participants will gather once again and march to the Closing Ceremony on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plaza in downtown Cleveland to rock out the Games. In between, parties, festivities and fun are on the agenda. Festival Village in downtown Cleveland will host entertainment on its stage
every night between August 10 and 14, along with recognition of medal winners, food and beverage and interactive activities to keep the day’s competitive energy going long into the night. The Gay Games Concert Band will perform on August 12, while the Festival Chorus will have its performance on August 13. In addition, the Indigo Girls will play at Lock 3, an outdoor venue in Akron, with a street festival happening in the same area on August 14. The Gay Games also plans to have a Black Party, White Party and Women’s Party, and a pre-Games party on August 8 is expected to be announced soon. “We are planning a robust Games Week so there’s something for everyone. We keep adding to the event schedule on the website every week with traditional and non-traditional activities,” Nobbe says. (Continued on page 28)

Hometown Play Kelly Scheall is ready to tackle Games Week. She is the commissioner of the women’s flag football event and director of the local league in Cleveland. “I want to show how lovely the city is and how great the people are,” she says. A naturally shy person, Scheall says sport gave her the opportunity to hold her own. “Playing both soccer and football, I can walk into any situation and not be scared,” she says. “As an adult, playing co-ed sports has helped me so much in life. I like to think that I am able to give that learning experience back to women who never had the opportunity.” Jim Hahn says participating in the Gay Games gives him a sense of pride in the LGBT culture and community with a deep sense of history. He should know because he has bowled in every Gay Games and will be back for the ninth this August. “In 1981, I met Dr. Tom Waddell, founder of the Games,” said Hahn. “He convinced me I had to participate. The thing that impressed me the most was the absolute absence of any shadow of a doubt that this was going to come off exactly as he envisioned.” While Waddell has since passed away, his go-all-out attitude continues with the 2014 Gay Games. Special for Compete readers: Use the code “COMPETE” prior to April 30 and save $30 on general registration for the 2014 Gay Games presented by the Cleveland Foundation.

CONCUSSIONS THE CONTROVERSY CONTINUES
M
arch 10 to 16 is Brain Awareness Week, and at Compete, we’ve followed the progress of the concussion controversy that came to light when former National Football League (NFL) players filed lawsuits against the league. Our December 2012 story, “Play Like a Brainiac Not a Maniac,” looked not only at what a concussion, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), is but also the cumulative effects of multiple CTEs over time on athletes, particularly retired professional athletes, a number of whom show signs of extreme mood swings, depression and eventually dementia even in their twenties and thirties. At the student-athlete level, Arizona has led the way in establishing safeguards for its studentathletes. All but three of the fifty states now have laws setting standards for a student’s participation following a concussion. In Arizona, a student suffering a concussion is automatically pulled from a game and barred from returning until he or she is cleared by a physician or a medical professional. The 2011 law also requires concussion education programs for parents, students and coaches. And the Arizona Interscholastic Association requires every high school athlete in the state to complete interactive on-line training using the “Barrow Brainbook,” a concussion education module created by neurologists at the famed Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

This past October PBS aired its much anticipated Frontline investigative documentary, “League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis” where ESPN’s Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru spent two hours outlining the case against the NFL’s handling of concussions and brain injuries. It’s the basis of their book, “League of Denial.” In it, they compare the NFL to big tobacco companies; both agencies deliberately denied or repressed information on how their behaviors could influence the long-term health of individuals. However, this isn’t just about professional athletes – parents and their children in Peewee or Midget programs are also being misled about child player safety and potential problems later in life. Although big tobacco companies tried desperately to hide the dangers of smoking, many individuals choose to smoke in spite of the now-known risks. Similarly, a greater awareness of the potential dangers of CTEs may not make much difference in pro sports. The NFL has continually denied any liability, even trying to discredit several doctors who examined the brains of former players from Mike Webster to Junior Seau.
The truth is that many fans don’t really seem to care about the danger their favorite athletes face because part of the game’s draw is its violence and aggression. A recent $765 million settlement of a concussion suit filed by 4,500 former players is pocket change for the league. And in return, the NFL admitted no liability, meaning it walked away from an extended and expensive court battle. Perhaps the student-athletes, their parents and coaches with concussion training will eventually change the way the NFL plays ball … or maybe not. BRIAN RAYMOND OUT DESTINATIONS
THE 5TH ANNUAL I N T E R N AT I O N A L GAY POLO WEEK will be hosted by two polo clubs in the village of Wellington, Florida, April 2nd – 6th. The village of Wellington is about 15 miles west of Palm Beach and about 45 miles north of Fort Lauderdale. And when the polo games are over, here are some other worthwhile places to Brian Raymond experience while you’re in the area. For you history buffs, a visit to the Henry Flagler Museum located at Whitehall, his winter estate, is a must. In 1902, the New York Herald described it as “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.” Flagler was one of the founders of Standard Oil and built the Over-Sea Railroad to Key West. He was so highly regarded that when a new town was incorporated on Biscayne Bay, the locals offered to name the town after him. He declined and the town became known as Miami. Before going out to the bars, take your camera and enjoy a stroll along Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Just four blocks long, this upscale shopping district with its casual and upscale dining options has been recognized by USA Today at #3 in its list of the “10 Most Iconic Streets” in the U.S. If you are looking for some time at the beaches, you’re in luck. There are plenty of options from Phipps Ocean Park right in Palm Beach to the beach and pier in Lake Worth, or head north to MacArthur State Park if you want a quiet and more secluded spot. Expect average highs around 82 degrees and lows about 66 degrees. In April the ocean starts warming up with average sea temps between 75 – 79 degrees. If you are looking for the gay scene, West Palm Beach is known for bars coming and going quickly. However, a reliable and popular bar is Roosters in West Palm Beach. Or take an hour drive to Wilton Manors/Ft. Lauderdale and experience one of the top gay destinations in the U.S Brian Raymond from Out Destinations can make your travel dreams come true. It’s the thrill of the competition and its unpredictability that brings drivers from all over the world to race against one another to win the prestigious TORC National Championship. And this year the legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip has been added to the TORC race schedule. Founded in 2009 by former motocross racer and Motorcycle Hall of Fame member Rick Johnson, the series has continued to grow. This year TORC: The Off-Road Championship will hold seven events across the United States and this year’s race television coverage by NBC Sports will also include a behind-the-scenes reality series. The organization just announced a new name for the Charlotte TORC race, now known as “The Husqvarna Showdown in Charlotte.” Already a driver sponsor of the Johnson brothers, Jarit and Jesse, Husqvarna’s additional support offers increased exposure and hospitality offerings for the Charlotte event. The TORC current beta website for the 2014 series, torcseries.com, provides the schedule for events and the television broadcasts, the drivers and their points and standings for 2013, the 411 on TORC’s latest information as well as some of the best TORC videos. You can also follow the series on Twitter at Twitter.com/TorcOffRoad or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/torc. ANCIENT HERBS FOR MODERN ATHLETIC WARRIORS
S
TRESS AFFECTS EACH OF US IN MANY WAYS. From the urbanites’ daily grind to weekend warriors, even to professional athletes, stress can really take a toll on our bodies. Chronic stress can lead to negative effects, such as running down our immune system, causing insomnia, weight gain, and premature aging, just to mention a few. How are modern day athletes able to combat these effects? One way is to examine what ancient humans used to combat stress – medicinal adaptogenic herbs. Long before the Olympic Games began, ancient scientists were keeping humans strong using herbal medications that helped the body and mind “adapt” to many types of stress. Used properly, these herbs can help athletes recover and stay strong and can help chronically ill patients recover from severe illness. For educational purposes only let’s review a few of these adaptogenic herbs. ASHWAGANDA (Withania somiferum) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 4,000 years for exhaustion and high levels of chronic stress. It’s also known to have aphrodisiac properties that could possibly aid in erectile dysfunction and fertility. RHODIOLOA (Rhodiola rosea), found in the high north tundra and Arctic, it’s the herb of endurance that’s great for chronic physical and mental demands. Athletes and students may experience increased performance with the proper use of this herb. SCHISANDRA (Schisandra chinensis) is a berry known in China for its sexual tonic qualities and ability to help with long-term stress and mental exhaustion. Berries can be eaten as is or mixed with other adaptogenic herbs for combating stress on the body and mind. SIBERIAN GINSENG (Eleutherococcus senticosus), popular due to the Soviet research, it’s given to Russian cosmonauts for health assistance while in space. Who knows, maybe even given to athletes at the Sochi Olympics?

Herbs are only as good as their overall quality so pay attention to where they originate, how they are harvested, which part of the plant is used as well as freshness and overall quality. There are often vast differences between quality brands and less expensive ones. Don’t buy based on price – quality needs to be your guide when working with herbal products. Always consult your specially trained medical professional before starting any herbal products, especially if pregnancy is a possibility. It is possible for herbal medications to interact with prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications and drugs, and cause undesirable interactions.

STAY IN SHAPE WITH THESE EASY WORKPLACE WEIGHT LOSS TIPS WORRIED ABOUT YOUR WAISTLINE? HERE’S MY EASY GUIDE TO STAYING FIT IN THE WORKPLACE A huge factor in our fight against obesity is our day job – so many of us sit at our desks and do nothing energetic for as many as 40 or 50 hours a week! At those numbers it’s no wonder obesity is on the rise. So how do we avoid becoming another statistic? The answer is simple. You need to move more and cut down on the energy you consume. If you’re stuck behind a desk, your caloric requirements are fewer and extra calories will be stored as body fat.
1. 2. 3.
GO FOR A WALK, take the stairs instead of the elevator or get off the bus a couple of stops earlier. Take advantage of things around you and try to cram in exercise wherever you can. Park benches and sets of stairs provide ample opportunity to get your heart rate racing and stoke your fatburning fire. It all adds up!
We are designed to move, so the more you get moving, the quicker you will see results. That doesn’t mean you need to spend all your spare time in the gym either. Even the most dedicated gym junkies spend only a small slice of their lives in the gym – four per cent, in fact – and that’s if you’re in the gym for an hour a day every day of the year! To achieve great results, you need to be smart about what you’re doing in your day-to-day routine – after all, that time amounts to 95 percent of your life!
LASTLY, AVOID BELIEVING FITNESS NONSENSE. You absolutely, positively never need 60 minutes for a workout! Studies prove HIIT (high intensity internal training) can achieve great results in as little as 15 minutes a session. The trick is to just get off your butt and do something!
TAKE YOUR LUNCH TO WORK at least three times a week. Don’t get caught unprepared or having to eat on the run. It’s a fitness slippery slope when you’re relying on your local café or fast food joint to serve you healthy food every day.
TRY DRINKING WATER only (no other beverages at all) three times a week. Not only will it hugely improve your hydration levels, but it’ll stop sugary drinks inhibiting your fat loss. Cut down on sugar and watch the weight fall off.

TO ORGASM OR NOT TO ORGASM: THAT IS THE QUESTION BY TY NOLAN
Dear Compete: My coach says we’re not supposed to have sex the night before a game. Is it true that sex before a game effects sports performance? Compete: This is a pseudo-scientific belief from over 2,000 years ago that athletes shouldn’t have sex before a big event. This stems from an ancient belief that you have a set number of orgasms allotted in life and once Ty Nolan you’ve “spent” them, you die. For those of you frantically counting how many orgasms you’ve had so far, relax. There is no scientific evidence that this is true. Just as you don’t run out of blood or saliva, your body just makes more fluids. In all the available studies, sex before a competition or exercise tends to raise testosterone in males, which could actually improve athletic performance. And if we’re just looking at calorie costs, intercourse burns fewer calories than walking up a couple of flights of stairs or what can be replaced by eating a banana. The studies also show females who have sex before competition or exercise tend to feel less pain which could also potentially improve their athletic performance. To put this into perspective, 100,000 condoms were distributed to 2014 Olympic athletes since based on past Olympic Games, any less than that meant athletes were running out of them. According to Olympic gold medalist, Ryan Lochte, “I’d say it’s 70 percent to 75 percent of Olympians,” that were having sex on-site. Quoting Lochte in his now classic article on sex in the Olympic Village, ESPN reporter, Sam Alipour also wrote: “It pains me to recall the spicy tales we couldn’t run – down-low same-sex relations, infidelity, the use of props, birthing of ‘Olympic babies’ – because of space constraints, taste or legal concerns. Bottom (pun intended) line? From baseball great Yogi Berra, “The trouble is not that players have sex the night before a game. It’s that they stay out all night looking for it.” Ty Nolan, Compete’s community editor, is an experienced counselor with the LGBT community and educator with a master’s degree in higher education. He is also a Native American storyteller and published author.

OBAMACARE WHAT IT MEANS FOR ATHLETES AMY POWELL
U
NLESS YOU HAVE BEEN “competing” under a rock, you most certainly have heard of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), better known as Obamacare. This is the new structure of healthcare in the U.S., signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The Obamacare structure basically means health plans are set with specific yearly deductibles and coinsurance levels, specific maximum out-of-pocket limits as well as specific mandates, also known as Essential Health Benefits (EHB), that must be included in every Obamacare plan. Examples of EHBs include a 100 percent-covered yearly physical, prescription coverage and even maternity!
For instance, choosing a higher yearly deductible lowers your monthly premium. Perhaps you take a certain medication that is not available in generic formulation. This can be very expensive if you choose a plan that only offers a small co-insurance towards prescriptions versus one with a low locked-in co-pay for your daily dose. Many plans also offer in-network benefits across state lines which is great if you travel regularly for tournaments. However, some plans are state-specific and offer only in-network benefits when you see a provider of this plan in your state. For athletes on the go needing emergency treatment for an out-of-state accident, this would not be a good option. The good news is there is still time to enroll for healthcare this year. And there are plenty of options to choose from to meet your needs while not giving your wallet the ole’ one-two punch!
THINGS TO KNOW:
HOW TO ENROLL:
1. OPEN ENROLLMENT – Began on October 1st, 2013 and will end on March 31st, 2014.
1. ON-EXCHANGE (FEDERAL WEBSITE) – This is the federally sponsored website, Healthcare.gov, where one can apply to obtain a subsidized plan only.
2. INDIVIDUAL MANDATE – All individuals must have a Qualified Health Plan in 2014 or pay a penalty…this will be assessed through your April 2015 taxes. 3. PENALTY – For not enrolling in a Qualified Health Plan the penalty is $95 per adult OR is one percent of your annual income, whichever is greater. 4. SUBSIDIES – The federal government will pay a portion of your monthly premiums based on your qualifying annual household income. Athletes of every variety need and want to be at the top of their game to compete and that means getting and staying healthy. Picking the “right” health plan for you means selecting the one that meets both your needs and your budget.
2. OFF-EXCHANGE (DIRECT TO CARRIER) – One can apply directly with a carrier such as Blue Cross Blue Shield or Assurant Health. 3. LICENSED AGENT – Get the assistance of a licensed agent who can help you navigate the various plans and the application process. And it doesn’t affect your rate to ask for help. The PPACA is a very complicated and constantly changing piece of legislation. Don’t let it intimidate you, however. Be prepared and take control. Life is a challenge; getting quality healthcare shouldn’t be! Amy Powell is a Licensed Insurance Agent with HealthMarkets Insurance Company in the Phoenix area.
