Sports Authority Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon & 1/2 Marathon Event Guide

EVENT GUIDE

SEPTEMBER 22, 2012

Welcome... to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point.

- Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

EVENT GUIDE SPECTATOR TIPS

Track Your Runner

Along the Course

Sign up for the Runner Tracking text messaging service at: www.runnertracking.com.

Friends and family have plenty of opportunities to get in on the fun! Whether they post up at a band site, mingle with the cheerleaders, hang out at the PCF Charity Mission Mile, or create their own support section, they can easily see you at several different points on the course:

• Track one runner for $2 and up to 5 runners for $5. • Find your runner’s pace and projected finish time using the pace chart (page 18).

Plan Your Family Reunion Confirm a post-race reunion plan before the race begins! • Plan to meet up in the family reunion area in Civic Center Park where large alphabetical signs will be prominently displayed. • Pick a letter and make sure that everyone in your party knows to meet at that letter. • Stick around for the Finish Line Festival and enjoy the finish line concert featuring Trevor Hall.

• Start & Finish Line: With a convenient looped course that starts and ends at Civic Center Park, you don’t have to traverse the city. Stay in one place to see your runner off at the start of the race and welcome them with open arms when they complete their 13.1 or 26.2 mile journey. Also, only a few blocks away on Broadway at 17th Ave, you will be able to see the runners pass at just about mile 3.5. • Mile 2.3: Looking for an early spectator spot? Check out mile 2.3 and cheer on runners as they pass Coors Field, home of the Rockies. • Mile 7.8: Head to City Park and support runners at mile 7.8, also the transition point on the course for the 2-Person Half Marathon Relay. • Mile 8.3: Hang out with the Prostate Charity Foundation at the Charity Mission Mile! • Mile 11.6: Spectators can show support at mile 11.6 where runners exit Cheesman Park and the marathon and half marathon courses split. The finish may be in sight for the half marathoners, but marathoners have 14.6 miles to go!

16

• Miles 25 & 26: With just about a mile remaining, marathoners can certainly use some reassuring smiles and words of encouragement! Head to S. Logan St. between 5th & 12th Ave and watch runners conquer their final mile.

to visit us at the Marathon Expo and on race day for games, prizes and a special appearance by Charlie!

EVENT GUIDE DENVER BIKE TOUR 20

There’s a new SPIN on Rock ‘n’ Roll for 2012! The inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Bike Tour has been added to the 2012 race weekend lineup! Cycling enthusiasts will now have the opportunity to join the race festivities on Saturday and cruise Denver’s closed city streets before the marathoners. The non-timed Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Bike Tour will cover 22.5 miles of the marathon route and feature entertainment along the course.

All registered participants receive: • Opportunity to ride the closed streets of Denver before the race. • Approximately 22.5-mile bike ride along the existing marathon course. • Inaugural Bike Tour Finisher’s Medal • Offi cial Participant T-shirt • Swag Bag • Offi cial Race Number • Music on the Course • Finish Line Festival with complimentary Michelob Ultra.

Bike Tour Parking:

Cyclists that are participating in the Bike Tour are strongly encouraged to park north of the start/finish village to avoid vehicle and runner participant traffic. Cyclists should plan to park along the perimeter and ride to the start. There is limited street parking in addition to several paid surface lots available downtown. Notes: Sunrise is approximately 6:48 a.m. on race day. With the bike tour starting at 6:45 a.m., cyclists should be prepared to ride to the start in the dark. Head and tail lights and reflective gear are highly recommended.

DROP OFF AND RACE DAY > PARKING, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION START TIME Saturday, September 22 Bike Tour: 6:45 a.m. Marathon, ½ Marathon, Relay: 7:15 a.m. GETTING TO THE START LINE The Bike Tour start line is located on Broadway adjacent to Civic Center Park between 14th Street and E Colfax Ave. The Marathon, ½ Marathon & Relay start line is located on Bannock adjacent to Civic Center Park between 14th Street and E Colfax Ave. RUNNER DROP OFF AT START Participants may be dropped off at the start line. Visit the event website for driving directions. Note: Allow for extra time due to road closures and heavy traffic; Colfax Ave East of Speer Blvd will have limited access and will be very congested. Note: The Theatre District/Convention Center stop will not be open on Race Day. The 16th Street Mall Shuttle will start running at 5:30 am so parking on the west end of Downtown and taking the Mall Shuttle up the start is another good option. Downtown Denver will become very congested as the start of event approaches, so plan to arrive at least 1.5 hours before the start time and bring cash for parking. Note: street parking is limited and may not be available due to course closures, so please plan on parking in one of the many surface lots or parking garages in the area. } For directions and more information on parking, visit the event website at denver.competitor.com and click on Event Details.

EVENT GUIDE HEADLINER CONCERT 26

Headliner Concert Featuring

Trevor Hall

GET READY TO ROCK!

If Trevor Hall’s 2009 self-titled Vanguard Records debut represented the young musician’s struggle with finding himself, his follow-up, Everything Everytime Everywhere (August 23rd) is a courageous affirmation that he has become the man he had been seeking. The warm linearity of his prior work gives way to a mature artist hitting his stride, an image that persists throughout this body of work, from the easy reggae slide of the opening “The Return” and the anthemic “Brand New Day” straight through to the momentous closing track, “The Mountain.” Hall’s signature blend of catchy pop/rock songs infused with tasteful shades of reggae has made this diverse 24-year-old one of the most lauded up-and-coming musicians on the American music scene. “With the last album, I was exploring more,” Hall says from his Southern California home, “I was going through a struggle with myself, and all that grittiness came out. With this one I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I had much greater conviction.” Hall easily exudes that rare ability to write universal songs that appeal to broad audiences in the vein of two of his heroes, Ben Harper and Bob Marley. The strong focus on love in Everything Everytime Everywhere quickly burrows itself into our minds, even though the love he discusses is more celestial than earthly.

Beyond his years in sound and maturity, Trevor Hall has accomplished what great musicians do when presented with such circumstances: he created lasting art to inspire and comfort others. Everything Everytime Everywhere is the testament of an inner warrior trying to lift himself and those around him out of the everyday maladies that plague our lives. There are songs to fall asleep to, songs to wake up by, and songs to feel good about yourself. They encapsulate life and make you a part of Trevor Hall’s world, while his music becomes part of yours.

EVENT GUIDE COURSE BANDS 30

7Andy Hackbarth Band

Rocktin Grove 5 Rocktin Grove happily calls the blue skies and majestic mountains of Boulder, Colorado home. They have rocked crowds at The Fox, Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom and Cervantes’ Other Side as well as other venues in the Denver/Boulder/Ft. Collins area. The seven piece band works toward an ever evolving sound of smooth fades, euphoric builds, infectious grooves and soulful harmonies that promise to get your feet stomping and body moving. Building from a love for bluegrass, funk, rock and worldmusic, their constantly growing list of genres form a new blend of sound. The Rocktin Grove experience is unique, energetic and always a good time.

Andy Hackbarth was raised on the idea that music can paint colors more vivid than any paintbrush. He does just that, weaving the world of classical and Spanish guitar into upbeat, folk and indie pop songs that combine musical innovation with the accessibility of pop music, all of which are 100 percent unmistakably Andy Hackbarth. Several of Andy’s original songs have seen substantial radio play, and in addition to headlining his own national tours, Andy has also recently shared the stage with Melissa Etheridge, Los Lobos, John Oates, Keb Mo, Matt Nathanson and Mat Kearney among others. Andy is currently recording his fourth album and will be debuting his new music this Fall during an eight-week national tour. www.AndyHackbarth.com

RETRO Get ready for an 80’s tribute band… and more! RETRO plays a set to 80’s, Top 40 rock, pop, old school and Hair rock...all with the crazy outfits, props and plenty of audience participation. It’s more than just a band... it’s a show!

| 2012 & 1/2 MARATHON EVENT GUIDE MARATHON RESPECT THE DISTANCE

40

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.

TRAIN

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

HYDRATE

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..

SALT

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

PLEASE

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!

If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

21:00-10:00 – Keep carbo-loading

Maintain your high-carb diet throughout the last day before you race. Choose familiar foods that have always worked well for your body in the past. Now is not the time to experiment.

20:00 – Get your gear together

Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for every race.

18:00 – Plan for race morning -By Matt Fittzgerald The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.

For example, run three miles easy, then run 6 x 30-second relaxed sprints.

It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.

Make a concrete plan for race morning that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue

3:00 – Wake up early

Set an early alarm to give your body plenty of time to get up to speed. Try to climb out of bed at least three hours before the start horn blasts.

2:45 – Eat your pre-race meal

It is important to wake up in plenty of time to consume and digest a high-carb pre-race breakfast three hours before your race start.

2:15 – Make sure your gear is ready

Go through your gear checklist one last time. Be sure not to forget the small essentials such as sunscreen and your race number.

0:30 – Warm up thoroughly

Start your warm-up about half an hour before your race start. Begin with easy jogging, then do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges and arm circles.
