Event Guide

January 20 20, 201 2013

Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point.

Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

EVENT GUIDE 10 YEARS RUNNING

Celebrate 10 Years

As we embark on the 10th annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon, it’s our loyal runners that have inspired us to reflect on a decade of incredible memories. On January 11, 2004, the inaugural event had more than 29,000 registered participants, making it the largest first-time annual running event. Over the years, this event has found a place in the hearts of locals and traveling runners alike. To celebrate 10 years running in the Valley of the Sun, we’ve created an anniversary website. We hope you enjoy the compilation of event milestones, fun facts and participant testi-

SRP

always is looking for ways to invest in green energy and programs that help customers save electricity and money. With a goal to meet 20 percent of its expected retail energy requirements with sustainable resources by 2020, SRP has continued to pursue ways to increase its renewable resources while providing customers with incentives to save energy. For example, last year SRP added 20 megawatts of green, renewable solar energy from Copper Crossing Solar Ranch in Florence and more recently added 19 megawatts from Queen Creek Solar Ranch to the utility’s mix of renewable energy generation. Together, the plants boast more than 180,000 photovoltaic modules mounted on single-axis tracking systems that follow the sun and provide power to more than 7,000 SRP customers. One of the biggest benefits is the fact that these solar plants don’t use water to generate energy – one of the most important factors for a power plant located in the desert. On the energy-efficiency side, SRP continues to offer innovative and cost-effective ways for customers to save money on their electric bills. For instance, an easy way to save money would be to make the switch to CFL light bulbs, which use about 75 percent less energy and produce less heat than standard incandescent bulbs. SRP customers stated that sustainable energy is important to them as long as it is affordable. To that end, SRP will continue to meet those expectations by searching for sustainable solutions that balance our environmental commitment with sound economics. Whether it’s solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy or energy efficiency, SRP will continue to add sustainable resources that will deliver economic and environmental benefits for our customers now and in the future. For more information about our Sustainable Portfolio or SRP’s incentive programs, go

EVENT GUIDE COURSE BANDS 38

Course Band Bios

Sara McAllister Hailing from Phoenix, AZ, vintage-style ska songstress Sara McAllister showcases her all-original acoustic music throughout the Southwest. Ms. McAllister strums a classical guitar over jazzy vocals, rocksteady rhythm and infectious ska choruses, accompanied by backing vocalist and upright bass player Anamieke Quinn. Occasionally, the duo is joined by drummer Cameron Tuttle and a horn section, as featured on her debut album Pheetown Girl. Sara McAllister has honed her skills with some of ska’s finest musicians by supporting acts such as Warsaw Poland Bros., Starpool, Monkey, The Aggrolites, The Slackers, and The Toasters.

DOCTOR BONES Doctor Bones is an avant-pop mixture of new wave and punk, with an ear for dynamic tension, emotional swells, and dance inducing beats. With quirky, intense dual male/female lead vocals over a powerhouse rhythm section, Doctor Bones is a culmination of the pop lessons learned from The Cars, Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, Joy Division and Andy Kaufman.

Miror Image Like good rock and roll? Mirror Image has been inciting good times in the ‘Valley of the Sun’ since 2002. The band consists of 4 seasoned musicians who love to play great music and entertain crowds of all sizes, ages and backgrounds. Their diverse musical backgrounds, influences and experience combine like the seasoning in a homemade ‘Musical Stew’ of spicy Classic Rock and tasty Country Music. Diane and the boys play great music that everyone will recognize and anyone can party to.

Downward Dog Since 2001, Downward Dog has been bringing its head-bopping blend of alternative rock and eclectic covers to audiences throughout Arizona. The band is fronted by powerhouse singer Julia Bogen whose “impressive set of pipes” and “fierce vocals” have earned praise from the New Times and admiration from crowds across the Valley. Guitarist Ritch Lorello, bass guitarist Fred Bogen, key boardist Dennis Webster, and drummer Mike Morales join Julia in resurrecting cherished hits from the 90s and beyond. Audiences are also treated to classics from the vinyl era, which Downward Dog brings back to life with renewed energy and a modern vibe, along with several hidden gems from today.

I did what my M.D. told me. I used chemical sunscreen everyday, winter and summer, for 26 years. My face burned and eyes teared every time I applied it... and I still got basal cell carcinoma.
