#RNRAZ
RunRocknRoll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Run, Rock and Roll for a Cause with Humana and Charity Miles We run for a lot of great reasons – to feel fit and healthy, to clear our minds and to chase our personal best. And at the upcoming Rock ‘n’ Roll race weekend you can add another reason to that list by running for others! Race participants can raise money for charity during the weekend events simply by visiting Charity Miles and downloading the FREE Charity Miles app for Android or iPhone – that’s right, it’s completely free and easy to use, too. Once you have downloaded the app, you will be able to select one of more than 25 national charities that are important to you. For every mile you log via the app, Charity Miles will then donate 25 cents to the cause of your choice Here’s to making a difference and running for even more great reasons to #rockyourhealth Sincerely,
Bruce Broussard President and Chief Executive Officer Humana Inc.

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
For many of you, this will be your first half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
TRAIN
HYDRATE
SALT
PLEASE
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your preplanned schedule.
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars.
If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 24

SRP
SRP EarthWise Energy provides solar energy projects for Valley nonprofits Thanks to the generosity of SRP EarthWise Energy™ participants, nonprofits across the Valley have saved money by using solar energy. Each month, SRP customers on the EarthWise Energy program commit an additional $3, $6, $9 or $12 to their electric bills. SRP uses 100% of these contributions to provide solar systems for local nonprofit organizations. Since 2007, the program has helped 18 nonprofits save a combined total of $185,000. The clean energy produced by the systems not only helps offset the organizations’ operational costs by reducing electric bills but also has prevented the release of more than 2.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of taking 229 cars off the road for a year. Nonprofits that have been awarded solar systems through the program include the Child Crisis Center, Boys & Girls Clubs, Hospice of the Valley and the Phoenix Zoo to name a few. EarthWise Energy is a convenient, cost-effective way customers can make a difference that transforms solar 38

SRP Community Solar™ . Get solar power without solar panels. Solar panels on your roof are great when you’re in the home. But what if you move? With SRP Community Solar, instead of installing panels on your roof, you elect to have a portion of your energy come from a local solar plant. So it’s perfect for anyone – even folks on the move. The program follows you to any location in the SRP territory. What’s more, no panels means no upfront costs, maintenance or long-term contracts. And the price for the solar portion of your bill will be locked in for five years. So it’s a smart move, any way you look at it. To learn more, visit srpcommunitysolar.com.
Running Trails
hIt the traILs: In the final days before your big race, it’s important to take care of your body! You’ll want to rest your legs, but an easy two to three mile tune-up run can help relieve anxiety and keep your body loose. Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe conveniently offer various walking and hiking trails that are easily accessible to both residents and visitors. Check out one of these suggested trails!
REACH 11 RECREATION AREA
For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy solitude and peaceful surroundings while they train, the city’s Reach 11 Recreation Area is a runner’s paradise. Offering 18 miles of trails, this recreation area features a surprising amount of trees and grasses, and wide, stable-surface footpaths covering mostly flat terrain.
PIESTEWA PEAK
With the many different mountain ranges in and around Phoenix, there are a lot of options for jogging space. What sets apart the Piestewa Peak area is the variety in difficulty among the trails and the great views. Many of the trails are at a higher 40
™
elevation than the rest of the city, offering serious joggers glimpses of other mountain peaks and the surrounding area. A favorite trail among runners is the gently sloping Dreamy Draw Nature Trail, which can be accessed from Northern Avenue and begins at one end of a paved parking lot.
MARKET STREET
Joggers looking for a trail with a nice mix of public and secluded areas will prefer this trail that’s accessible from Market Street, a shopping and dining district in Northeast Scottsdale. You can easily park in front of Armitage Wine Lounge & Cafe and then walk east to the edge of the parking lot to find the beginning of the path. Follow the trail as it goes under the road and past Legacy Bank, then kick into high gear as you find yourself winding in and out of the neighborhoods of DC Ranch, around the well-manicured golf course, and through the desert landscape.
OLD TOWN SCOTTSDALE
If you’re the kind of jogger who likes to be able to focus on something, anything, other than your workout, or if you simply like to flaunt your runner’s bod, consider jogging in Old Town Scottsdale. The area is popular on the weekends, but that could be a good thing if you like to people-watch while you exercise.
