RunRocknRoll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Take a Ferry Ride New York City comprises several islands, and its waters are home to an extensive ferry system to take you uptown and downtown, as well as across the rivers between boroughs. Perhaps the best-known transport is the Staten Island Ferry. It’s primarily a commuter shuttle between Staten Island and Lower Manhattan, but it’s also a wonderful 5.2-mile, 20-minute mini-cruise with great views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan—plus it’s free. Other shuttles include New York Water Taxi and NY Waterway and other services are available, too, such as harbor and sightseeing cruises like Statue Cruises, operating direct service from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Go Shopping If you love to shop, there are choices abound. Midtown offers top-name fashion spots like Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and other big-name department stores; SoHo, TriBeCa and NoLIta feature celebrity designer goods, handmade jewelry and artwork; and Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a fun place to find one-of-akind vintage apparel in charming boutiques. For culture and entertainment, consider NYC’s remarkable museums and the bright lights of Broadway at the Theatre District in Times Square. Attend a TV Show Taping Attending the tapings of popular television shows filmed in New York City is fun and
free. It’s best to arrange obtaining tickets as far in advance as possible, depending on the individual show’s policies. Still, many shows have standby options if you’re willing to wait. Click here for the addresses and schedules of TV shows—and your chance to say hi to people back home on national television. Are you a Night Owl? If so, you can (and should) party at cocktail lounges in Chelsea and dancing dens in the Meatpacking District. There’s also cabaret and karaoke in Times Square, comedy clubs in Greenwich Village and Long Island City, and rock and roll venues on the Lower
East Side. Are you a Foodie? Foodies who want to savor delicious, authentic cuisines from every region in the world should head to Astoria or Flushing in Queens, the East Village in Manhattan, and Cobble Hill in Brooklyn. Catch a Ballgame A visit to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, the Mets’ Citi Field in Queens or their minor-league teams—the Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones—is a must for all baseball lovers. Runner Perks Take advantage of exclusive race weekend participant specials at many participating businesses all over the city!

The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done. —By Matt Fitzgerald 48:00 | DO A SHORT, FAST WORKOUT

Respect the Distance
RX TO ROCK
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
tRain
hyDRatE
salt
PlEasE
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars.
If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 28

Local Trails Running in NYC is great. There are tons of routes available to run and if you’re visiting NYC or live here and want to know what routes to take your friends on, here are some great routes that showcase some of the best landmarks in NYC. The best thing about these routes, you don’t have to run marathons to be able to tackle these doable distances. Central Park Reservoir at Sunset: There’s no better time to run around this famous path than when the sun is setting. The scenic view takes my mind off the stress of the day and in my opinion this is the most beautiful view that represents NYC. The cinder path is soft underfoot and the flat path makes it an easy, meditative and peaceful run despite the fact that it’s smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Central Park Lower Loop Shake-out Run: This 1.7 mile loop is the perfect place to loosen up the legs before a race. On this loop you’ll run past Tavern on the Green, the New York City Marathon finish line, Bethesda Fountain and Sheep’s Meadow. Run 2 loops for a longer shake-out run. Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Grand Central Station: I ran variations of this route when training for my first New York City Marathon. It’s a great way to see part of the city without having to run a ton of miles. Once you get to Grand Central Station you can spend some time exploring before taking a train back to Brooklyn. Two Bridges Ice Cream Run: Is there anything better than planning a run that ends with ice cream on a hot day? Running across both the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges is always challenging and scenic. Reward yourself after conquering two bridges by ending up at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory on Water Street. Lower Manhattan Sightseeing Tour: This is one of my all time favorite routes. I worked downtown for a number of years and loved being able to see so many famous landmarks during one short run. Even now that I’ve lived in NYC for over 14 years, I still love seeing the Statue of Liberty on my run. During a weekday this route gets a little crowded, but it’s pretty easy to navigate before the work day begins or on the weekend. Run, Rock and Roll for a Cause with Humana and Charity Miles We run for a lot of great reasons – to feel fit and healthy, to clear our minds and to chase our personal best. And at the upcoming Rock ‘n’ Roll race weekend you can add another reason to that list by running for others! Race participants can raise money for charity during the weekend events simply by downloading the FREE Charity Miles app for Android or iPhone – that’s right, it’s completely free and easy to use, too. Once you have downloaded the app, you will be able to select one of more than 25 national charities that are important to you. For every mile you log via the app, Charity Miles will then donate 25 cents to the cause of your choice Consider this: If all estimated walkers/runners competed in at least one Rock ‘n’ Roll race with Charity Miles, we would raise over one million dollars for charity – now that’s what we call making Every Mile Matter!
So, don’t delay – follow these steps: STEP 1: Download the free Charity Miles app for your Android or iPhone STEP 2: Select a cause that is important to YOU STEP 3: Start walking/running/biking and log your miles STEP 4: Inspire others by sharing your results on Facebook or Twitter! Here’s to making a difference and running for even more great reasons to #rockyourhealth Sincerely,
Bruce Broussard President and Chief Executive Officer Humana Inc.
