GETTING AROUND
16
Given numerous road closures and subsequent traffic on race day it is recommended spectators drive as little as possible. Pick a place to park from the following options and walk to the Spectator-Friendly Viewing Locations listed as follows.
IMPORTANT: Refer to the Road Closure information on our website before you do any driving on race day.
PLAN YOUR REUNION
Make a post-race reunion plan with your runner before the race. Large alphabetical signs will be posted in the Family Reunion area to help you reconnect easily with your runner—“Meet me at letter M!”
SPECTATOR-FRIENDLY VIEWING LOCATIONS
SPECTATOR PARKING
1. Downtown Downtown parking is considered park-at-your-own-risk. Due to road closures, only a small number of lots will be available to the public and once they fill up, they will be closed. Due to the small amount of available parking spaces downtown, ALL spectators are advised to use the free shuttle from the AT&T Center. 2. Satellite Lot @ AT&T Center Spectators are encouraged to park at the AT&T Center and take a complimentary round trip shuttle to/from the finish line. Shuttles will run for spectators from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. to the finish line. There is no spectator shuttle to the start line—only the finish line. Spectators should not arrive before 7:30 a.m; there are no spectator shuttles before 7:30 a.m. There will be no spectator shuttles from the start to the finish line.

EVENT GUIDE GET FIT SAN ANTONIO 26
Whether you are running to socialize, build company or team unity, you can GET FIT and make a statement with numbers! Organized groups of 10 or more can take part in the GET FIT Challenge on Sunday. GET FIT teams come from many different settings, but all come to share in the liveliness and high spirits associated with finishing a goal together as a unit!
GET FIT Team Spotlight: NISD Marathon Team
Texas’ 4th-Largest Public School System Shoots for R ’n R Team Record. With a history of emphasis on faculty fitness, Northside Independent School District staff members in San Antonio hope to beat their record over last year. Dedicated to supporting NISD teachers, the public school foundation, Northside Education Foundation (NEF) solicits sponsorships for the team and encourages staff, their families, and all the people in the quarter-of-a-million people in the 100,000-student system to participate in the race in some way – as a runner or volunteer.
UIW Rock’ N Red Birds
Most people would laugh when asked if they could complete a half-marathon in the next few months. Rosa Aguilar-Delgado is not one of those people. She had been thinking about registering for the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and 1/2 Marathon for a while and then when she received an email from Alumni Relations asking to help UIW, she saw it as a sign. Her faith and courage to take the Get Fit Challenge has been amplified by the strong but quiet example she provides to her other UIW Rock’ N Red Bird teammates. At the first kick-off session as new teammates shared their goals, she explained that she intended to complete her first half-marathon even though she had pins in her back from a previous surgery. You can find more info on the UIW Rock’ N Red Birds at www.uiwalumni.org/rocknredbirds
TRINITY UNIVERSITY
Trinity University has had a team in the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll series since 2008. Typically 100 students, alumni, parents, and employees sign up to participate in the Dean of Students Half Marathon Challenge. In addition to the obvious benefits of health and wellness, they use this program to do training runs through wealthy and poor neighborhoods to underscore the needs of the poor in our own city. They do a food drive to honor Kayla Mire, who died in an accident months after graduating. She was an advocate for the homeless. To date they have collected over 30,000 pounds of food/donation equivalents. Trinity’s program received a national award in higher education in 2011.

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK
That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:
–Mirinda Carfrae, 2010 Ironman World Champion
• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle. • The right carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel exhausted muscles. • Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.
GET SPONSORED If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL. Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score: • $500 sponsorship • Top notch Team REFUEL training gear • Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad $1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote. You’ve made lowfat chocolate milk part of your After. Represent it by submitting a video at Rock ‘n’ Roll event expos or online today! EVENT GUIDE HEADLINER CONCERT 30
Jo Dee Messina At 19, Jo Dee Messina loaded a car and headed to Nashville, where she entered talent contests and got a regular gig on Nashville’s “Live at Libby’s” radio show. Producer Byron Gallimore heard her and introduced her to another struggling newcomer named Tim McGraw. At a backstage meeting at Fan fair, she met and charmed a Curb Records executive and got a record deal on the spot. A dedicated runner, she has completed two marathons and continues to train. “On the road, I’ll get up and run, and since my steel player is training with me we run together,” she says. “Then I go to the gym and lift weights, have lunch, do the sound check and then my meet and greet, do the show and get to bed as early as I can. Her marriage to Chris Deffenbaugh and the addition of their son, Noah, in January 2009, is part of a life in which genuine comfort and happiness seem to be the main order of business. Balancing motherhood and her career is a challenge she is facing head on with a joy befitting the situation. For Jo Dee, it’s now about balance and living life to the fullest.

EVENT GUIDE RESPECT THE DISTANCE 40
For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
1 2 3 4
TRAIN
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..
SALT
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…
