#RNRLA
RunRocknRoll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Animals in Flight: ASPCA Transports 145 Los Angeles Pets to Find Loving Homes ®
We are excited to announce that 145 shelter dogs, cats and kittens took flight this August during a large-scale animal transport from California to partner shelters in Oregon and Washington state. The ASPCA teamed up with the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control, along with Wings of Rescue, to transport these animals from LA County shelters by plane in the hopes of giving them a second chance to find loving homes. This transport was the largest transport of adoptable pets from LA County shelters in one day. Since the ASPCA launched its multi-year, $25 million commitment to animals in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in 2014, our Animal Relocation team has transported more than 2,000 pets from overcrowded LA County shelters to shelters and rescue groups in other areas of the country where the demand for adoptable pets is high. Our LA initiative also includes a free spay/neuter clinic serving South Los Angeles and a Safety Net program that works to keep pets in their homes and out of LA County shelters. For more information about how you can help and to join Team ASPCA, please visit teamaspca.org.

LOS ANGELES
With an abundance of very diverse options, the question in Los Angeles is never what to do, but where to begin. These are a few of our suggestions. GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY
Perched on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, the Observatory is an icon of Los Angeles and one of southern California’s most popular attractions. The exhibition hall features more than 60 space-related displays, the planetarium seats more than 300 beneath the central dome, the public telescopes offer unmatched glimpses of the solar system and the grounds provide the best views of the Los Angeles basin, especially at night. 22

LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the western United States, attracts nearly one million visitors each year and contains more than 100,000 works that span from ancient times to the present. Urban Light, an installation on the sidewalk in front of LACMA that incorporates 202 antique street lights, has been one of Los Angeles’ most photographed landmarks since its unveiling in 2008.
LA BREA TAR PITS
Located in the heart of the 23-acre Hancock Park and just minutes from Beverly Hills, the La Brea Tar Pits are one of the richest ice age fossil sites in the world and a registered National Natural Landmark. They are still an active excavation site, and over the past century paleontologists have found more than three million specimens there, including saber-toothed cats, giant jaguars and mammoths. The three struggling mammoths in the bubbling tar makes for a truly iconic scene. OCTOBER 25, 2015

Respect the Distance
RX TO ROCK
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
TRAIN
HYDRATE
SALT
PLEASE
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars.
If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo during one of our Doctors office hours or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 32

Volunteer opportunities are available Thursday through Sunday of race week; both individuals and groups of all sizes are needed. For more information, visit runrocknroll.competitor.com/los-angeles/ volunteer or stop by Volunteer Check In at the Health & Fitness Expo during race weekend for information on available shifts. Run, Rock and Roll for a Cause with Humana and Charity Miles We run for a lot of great reasons – to feel fit and healthy, to clear our minds and to chase our personal best. And at the upcoming Rock ‘n’ Roll race weekend you can add another reason to that list by running for others! Race participants can raise money for charity during the weekend events simply by visiting Charity Miles and downloading the FREE Charity Miles app for Android or iPhone – that’s right, it’s completely free and easy to use, too. Once you have downloaded the app, you will be able to select one of more than 25 national charities that are important to you. For every mile you log via the app, Charity Miles will then donate 25 cents to the cause of your choice Here’s to making a difference and running for even more great reasons to #rockyourhealth Sincerely,
