I did what my M.D. told me. I used chemical sunscreen everyday, winter and summer, for 26 years. My face burned and eyes teared every time I applied it... and I still got basal cell carcinoma. That’s why I founded Sunology® Sunscreen in 2010... to make safe, effective, healthy natural sunscreen. Far East Movement

Far East Movement have become worldwide sensations from Australia to Austria, Asia to the Netherlands, and they even found time to create the theme for Nickelodeon’s animated series, Monsuno. Not bad for a group who paid their dues in the LA underground. Their new album Dirty Bass encompasses everything

FM has ever represented: the futuristic connection between dance, rap, and pop music—ideally played at a loud volume while driving at a high velocity. To date the album has generated the international hit singles “Live My Life” featuring Justin Bieber & Red Foo of LMFAO, and “Turn Up The Love” featuring Cover Drive. The

electrifying music video for the latter has since been viewed over 35 million times on YouTube. After you rock the course in Pasadena, bring your family and friends to the FREE Finish Line Festival and celebrate your accomplishment with Far East Movement!

EVENT GUIDE 2013 COURSE BANDS 30

Course Band Bios SONSOLES Sonsoles (pronounced sown-so-les)—derived from the Spanish words for a type of song (son) and the brilliance of the sun (sol)—is stamping its mark as “el nuevo sonido de Rock en Espanol”—the new sound in Spanish rock. As a young, global ensemble of talented musicians from Spain, Mexico, Los Angeles, and El Salvador they fuse pop, dance, rock, reggaeton, salsa rhythms and melodies. Recently, their song, “Mientras Te Vas” won first prize (Latin) in the 2012 USA Songwriting Competition. These dynamic beats are part of their signature sound.

UPSTREAM Welcome to the Upstream experience. Please leave your inhibitions and other real world concerns at the door; we’re here to party! It’s been quite a wild ride for the members of Upstream, formed in the republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the late 1980’s and reformed in southern California in the early 1990’s. With six CD’s under the band’s belt and a very impressive live performance reference, Upstream has certainly earned the right to be called a seasoned musical outfit.

SAM GRAHAM TRIO The Sam Graham Trio (Sam Graham, guitarvocal; Ralf Balzer, drums; Jon Mohr, bass) was formed in 2002. Since then, the group has performed hundreds of gigs, from the hilltops of Los Angeles (The Getty Center) to the basements of New York (the Jazz Lounge at CBGB’s), from restaurants and bars to concerts, private parties, weddings, and numerous other events. While the group draws on an extensive repertoire of vocal and instrumental jazz standards immortalized by Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Nat “King” Cole, Wes Montgomery, and many more, they also play original music and explore their roots in pop and rock with innovative adaptations of songs by Nirvana, Metallica, the Doors, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and others. All in all, it adds up to a singular style: Jazz for Moderns.

NEVERWONDER Neverwonder’s unique sound is a blend of rock, pop and soul. The band’s music is driven by its strong musicianship and is rooted by life’s experiences. The band’s creative synergy has been an undeniable force to be reckoned with. Its natural chemistry evokes the creation of impressionable songs and unforgettable performances. The new lead singer’s sultry, soulstyling and songwriting brings a new vibe to the band’s repertoire. Neverwonder is excited about its next chapter together and is going full steam ahead with the next album in 2013.

Maintain your high-carb diet throughout the last day before you race. Choose familiar foods that have always worked well for your body in the past. Now is not the time to experiment.

20:00 – Get your gear together 18:00 – Plan for race morning -By Matt Fittzgerald The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.

48:00 – Do a short, fast workout

For example, run three miles easy, then run 6 x 30-second relaxed sprints.

47:00 – Start carbo-loading

Be sure to consume high-carb foods and beverages at every meal.

31:00 – Get a good night’s sleep

Getting adequate sleep is critical the final days before a big race.

22:00 – Do a short, easy workout

It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.

Make a concrete plan for race morning that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue

3:00 – Wake up early

Set an early alarm to give your body plenty of time to get up to speed. Try to climb out of bed at least three hours before the start horn blasts.

2:45 – Eat your pre-race meal

It is important to wake up in plenty of time to consume and digest a high-carb pre-race breakfast three hours before your race start.

2:15 – Make sure your gear is ready

Go through your gear checklist one last time. Be sure not to forget the small essentials such as sunscreen and your race number.

0:30 – Warm up thoroughly

Start your warm-up about half an hour before your race start. Begin with easy jogging, then do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges and arm circles.

EVENT GUIDE TELL US WHY YOU ROCK 32

Tell Us Why You Rock! Marie Wise Menlo Park, Calif. I am running for my two sons who have Mitochondrial disease. I am running because they can’t, and they inspire me every day to never give up. This will be my first half-marathon. Every day I train I think about how they overcome their disease, and it makes me run faster!

Bob Gillespie Pasadena, Calif. I love to run. After logging over 63,000 miles, including 27 marathons and six Boston Marathons, both my knees gave out. After osteoscopic surgery on both knees, I engaged in long walks and hiking. Each year I pursue a 110-180 mile walk over a period of five to six days and have covered every trail in our local San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains. At 73 years old, I’ll be enjoying the Rock ‘n’ Roll half-marathon in Pasadena as a walker who plans to be the very last finisher, but grateful for every mile I have an opportunity to complete.

Cheryl Landazuri Simi Valley, Calif. I’m a wife, stay at home mom of two girls and a marathon runner. I ran my first and only half-marathon two years ago to get fit and feel good, but more importantly, in hopes of inspiring my daughters to be active, healthy and strong no matter what their obstacles. Our youngest daughter has Down syndrome and during my training I would cry about mile five nearly every run. I want our girls to see that their stay-at-home mom who makes their lunches, cleans the floors and snuggles them at any chance I get, is a girl just like them, capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds to, no matter how hard it may be.

EVENT GUIDE RESPECT THE DISTANCE 38

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.

1 2 3 4

TRAIN

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

HYDRATE

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..

SALT

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

PLEASE

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!

If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…
