#RNRPDX

Welcome to the one race you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Considering there are some 32,000 public golf courses nationwide, it is notable that Golf Digest rated two in the Portland area, Eastmoreland and Heron Lakes, among the country’s top 75 public courses. Eastmoreland, founded in 1917 and Oregon’s second oldest golf course, is bordered in part by the beautiful Rhododendron Gardens and Crystal Springs Lake. Heron Lakes offers two challenging courses and hosted the 2000 USGA Amateur Public Links Championship.

Distillery Row Portland Head for the Aerial Tram hard stuff on Distillery Row in Southeast Portland, where a handful of innovative small distilleries are making handcrafted, locally distilled spirits available for the first time since prohibition. From vodkas, gins, rums and whiskeys to more specialized spirits such as absinthe, aquavit and flavored liqueurs, these independent distilleries are making over 20 unique liquors. Many of them offer tours and tastings on Saturday, and some have weekday hours by appointment.

The Portland Aerial Tram, the second commuter aerial tramway in the country, offers a ride you definitely won’t soon forget. The tram cars travel 3,300 linear feet between the city’s South Waterfront district and the main OHSU campus located in the Marquam Hill neighborhood. The three minute ride offers staggering views of Mount Saint Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and downtown Portland for only $4.

The Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House now has over one hundred franchises from coast to coast, but the flagship location was opened in Portland in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. Located at 8601 SW 24th Avenue, it is a city landmark and James Beard Foundation Award recipient that serves high-quality comfort breakfasts, including amazing and authentic Dutch Baby pancakes.

G.Lov &

Headliner Concert

G. Love

& Special Sauce G. Love & Special Sauce will spend 2014 celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their self-titled debut with a brand new album built on the trio’s signature hip-hop blues sound. Sugar, which was recently released in April via Brushfire Records, reunites original members G. Love, aka Garrett Dutton, upright bassist James Prescott and drummer Jeffrey Clemens for the first time in years. The band has also confirmed an extensive United States tour, including this stop as the 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland Finish Line Festival headliner. The Philadelphia-based trio has a laid-back, sloppy blues sound that is quite unique. It encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists, blazing the trail with

20

artists such as the Beastie Boys and Beck. The group -- G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/ harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums and Jim Prescott on upright bass -- released their self-titled debut in 1994 on OKeh/Epic. It received enthusiastic reviews and was certified RIAA Gold on the strength of the MTV-spun video for “Cold Beverage.” The group toured heavily, traversing the world and playing 200 nights a year. They landed a subsequent spot on the H.O.R.D.E. tour, where they found a receptive young audience and established themselves in the Jamband scene. They followed up this success with the more mature Coast to Coast Motel in 1995. The record dug back to the blues roots that propelled G. Love to music. Following the release of Coast to Coast Motel, G. Love worked on a new album with three different bands (All Fellas Band, Philly Cartel, and King’s Court) and special guest Dr.

Rock ‘n’ Roll PORTLAND ½ Marathon & 10K

John. Soon, though, G. Love & Special Sauce reunited, and they have been bringing the unstoppable energy of a band that got their start in Boston bars in the early ‘90s to up to 150 shows a year ever since.

Celebrate your 13.1 or 6.2 mile achievement at Waterfront Park with friends, family, fellow participants and an amazing performance by G. Love & Special Sauce!

Respect the Distance

RX to Rock

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

TRAIN

HYDRATE

SALT

PLEASE

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website.

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars.

If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 28

Race Day Checklist

The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.

—By Matt Fitzgerald

48:00 | Do a short, fast workout

For example, run three miles easy, then run 6 x 30-second relaxed sprints.

47:00 | Start carbo-loading

Be sure to consume high-carb foods and beverages at every meal.

31:00 | Get a good night’s sleep

Getting adequate sleep is critical the final days before a big race.

22:00 | Do a short, easy workout It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.

21:00-10:00 | Keep carbo-loading

Maintain your high-carb diet throughout the last day before you race. Choose familiar foods that have always worked well for your body in the past. Now is not the time to experiment.

20:00 | Get your gear together

Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for every race. 30

Rock ‘n’ Roll PORTLAND ½ Marathon & 10K

18:00 | Plan for race morning

Make a concrete plan for race morning that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue

3:00 | Wake up early

Set an early alarm to give your body plenty of time to get up to speed. Try to climb out of bed at least three hours before the start horn blasts.

2:45 | Eat your pre-race meal

It is important to wake up in plenty of time to consume and digest a high-carb pre-race breakfast three hours before your race start.

2:15 | Make sure your gear is ready Go through your gear checklist one last time. Be sure not to forget the small essentials such as sunscreen and your race number.

0:30 | Warm up thoroughly

Start your warm-up about half an hour before your race start. Begin with easy jogging, then do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges and arm circles.

Running Trails

Local Running Spots

Whether you are looking for a weekend warm-up jog, a challenging workout or a great way to take advantage of Portland’s beautiful scenery, here are a few routes we recommend!

Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade

Forest Park

Mount Tabor Park

Tryon Creek State Natural Area

The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade is 1.5 miles long, extending north from the Hawthorne Bridge, past the Morrison and Burnside Bridges, to the Steel Bridge. It is adorned with public art and allows the best glimpse of downtown Portland’s riverfront skyline as well as breathtaking views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. At 1,200 feet, its floating walkway is the longest one of its kind in the country and offers the sensation of walking on water.

Portland is one of four cities in the United States to have an extinct volcano, the 535 foot Mount Tabor, within its boundaries. The park that surrounds that volcano is a 200-acre area containing three reservoirs and plenty of tree-covered trails. Run up and around the volcano on terrain that varies from easy paved switchbacks to moderate gravel paths to steep concrete steps. The view of Portland from Mount Tabor’s summit is truly breathtaking. 32

Rock ‘n’ Roll PORTLAND ½ Marathon & 10K

A mecca for distance runners, Forest Park stretches more than 8 miles on the northeast slope of the Tualatin Mountains just minutes from Portland’s trendy Pearl District. Home to a network of more than 70 miles of rolling dirt trails and gravel roads, Forest Park is the largest wooded city park in the United States. The park is anchored by the 30.2 mile Wildwood Trail, which has plenty of offshoots from which looped runs can be created.

The only Oregon state park within a major metropolitan area, the 645acre Tryon Creek State Natural Area lies between Boones Ferry Road and Terwilliger Boulevard in southwest Portland. The park includes miles of trails and a paved bicycle path for your running pleasure.

Cupcake Girls – The Sweet Run

Humans for CheEtahs

Banfield Charitable Trust’s mission is unique. Each year, millions of pets end up in shelters because their owners could not care for them. Banfield Charitable Trust is the only national nonprofit solely devoted to preserving the humananimal bond by providing programs designed to keep pets in their current homes with the people who love them. Banfield Charitable Trust programs help more than 100,000 pet families annually.

The Cupcake Girls is an organization with a simple, yet powerful mission. We exist to bring non-judgmental support, consistent caring and community resources to women working in the adult entertainment industry. We aim to provide unconditional love and support to women in the industry. We do this by providing a network of free or low-cost community services connecting them to vital resources such as healthcare, financial counseling, drug & alcohol recovery programs, dental work, therapy, legal advice, and childcare while providing peer mentorship and positive community.
