EVENT GUIDE HEADLINER CONCERT 20
Headliner Concert Featuring
Matt Nathanson
GET READY TO ROCK!
Since picking up a guitar at the age of 6, Matt found his passion and has enticed everyone who has listened. He has built an incredibly loyal fan base due to extensive touring filled with captivating performances. His blend of introspective folk-rock music and standup comedy provide a unique yet entertaining experience. During his time in college in Claremont, Calif., Matt recorded his first album, “Please,” in 1993. He went on to record several other albums over the next decade, with many of his songs featured on network TV shows such as “Scrubs,” “Tarzan” and “One Tree Hill.” His eighth album, “Some Mad Hope,” was his most popular to date, and debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at No. 60. It would remain on the charts for 34 weeks, thanks to several hit songs that put his name and album on the map. His song “Come On Get Higher” went platinum with 1.3 million single sales, and peaked at No. 3 on Mainstream AC. His most recent album, “Modern Love,” released in June 2011, has received similar acclaim from fans, debuting at No. 17. He opened for the 2012 Kelly Clarkson tour, in-between a solo tour, and even provided a serenade on ABC’s hit show “The Bachelor.” “It’s a powerful record. We modeled its production and sound after those great 80s records; when you listen to them, they sound timeless, as if they are from the future. That was the idea behind the record, that the song is the beating heart and the production hangs on it,” Matt says. Celebrate the completion of the Half and Mini Marathons with family, friends, fans, and Matt Nathanson as he welcomes and congratulates the runners with a rockin’ headliner concert!

EVENT GUIDE COURSE BANDS
Tip of the Top
Rory Seldon with InnerSession Rory Seldon with InnerSession is a Los Angelesbased soul, funk and R&B band that always captivates the crowd and has everyone dancing on their feet once the show starts. The band consists of seven very talented and professional musicians that truly take their craft to the next level. This band is very unique in its sound with a variety of instruments, including keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, congas and percussion along with three vocalists. Rory Seldon, who is on keyboards and vocals, is the founder of this group and has been in the music industry of over 20 years.

SJ_12_Event_Guide.indd 22
Who says the good old days of the blues are over? Tip of the Top is a San Francisco Bay Area band that has taken the blues scene by storm since 2009. The band’s musical style is reminiscent of the 1950s and their live show delivers all the primitive pulsating rhythms, repetitive chord changes and gritty amplification that defines early American Rock ‘n’ Roll. But these bluesmen are not mere imitators. They feel this music to their core. They represent it with 100% authentic personal expression and deliver it with emotionally charged energy.
Alluette Alluette, a four-some from very different musical backgrounds, was formed four years ago. The band consistently plays shows all over the East San Francisco Bay Area and its instrumentation is very eclectic with sounds of blues, funk and hip-hop mixed with hard Rock and plenty of surprises. Each member brings plenty of great ideas for new material they are constantly creating. The band just released its first album, “Get Some,” and is currently working on another album and is setting up shows for a small tour.

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL SAN JOSE™ HALF MARATHON | 2012
Endurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout. That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:

EVENT GUIDE DESTINATION SAN JOSE 28
DESTINATION SAN JOSE San Jose, “The Gateway to the Bay”, is now the 10th largest city in the United States. Don’t let that lead you to believe they are the “L.A. North”. Despite intense urbanization, San Jose is a leader in city-sustainability, thanks in part to its housing of some of the world’s most cutting-edge tech firms. Accessibility is the name of the game, and San Jose is the star player. Put the various public transportation methods to use, or just set out for a walk and explore these sights, sounds, and tastes that San Jose has to offer!
Second to None in More than just Technology
San Jose, Calif., leads the charge in more than just technology. The city holds many “biggest,” “best” and “first” titles that put San Jose on the map for more than just housing many of the world’s top digital and tech companies. Enjoy some of San Jose interesting distinctions:
SJ_12_Event_Guide.indd 28
• California’s first state capitol building was originally in San Jose, just steps from where the finish line concert will take place. • San Jose is the No. 1 recycler among the nation’s largest cities. • Discovery Meadow in downtown San Jose is home to the world’s largest Monopoly board game. Spanning 930 square feet, it monopolizes quite a bit of its own real estate. • San Jose’s Lake Cunningham Skate Park holds the title for California’s larest skate park. • Raging Waters San Jose is Northern California’s largest water park.
For Those Who Crave the Outdoors and Recreation
If outdoor adventure is your niche, you have come to the right place. San Jose’s temperate climate coupled with an abundance of parks, pools, natural hiking

Whether you are looking for a good weekend warm-up jog, a daytime family hangout, or just great views of San Jose, here are a few trails we recommend. These trails will show you the beauty of San Jose, both its forests and lakes and modern urban architecture. Stay loose and relaxed on race weekend, and enjoy the sights of San Jose while doing so!
Los Gatos Creek Trail The South Bay’s most popular trail consists of an 11-mile system offering an exciting journey of side trips and points of interest. It extends from Lexington Dam in the lower Santa Cruz Mountains and meanders through Los Gatos, Calif., Campbell, Calif., and San Jose, Calif. This trail is an awesome display of nature in close proximity to urban culture.
Guadalupe River Trail 32

the banks of the Guadalupe River. You can enjoy a fresh sea breeze on the north side, and the cool scenery of urban engineering closer to downtown. A great escape for training and a marvel that such a long trail exists in the heart of the city!
Coyote Creek Trail A log trail winding from San Jose to Morgan Hill, Calif., Coyote Creek is great for a training run as the lake offers beautiful scenery, wildlife, and beaches for quick water breaks. A peaceful get away before a loud, rockin’ race day!
Rancho San Antonio Trail West of San Jose is Los Altos, Calif.; this is great spot to jog and relax to beautiful views of the whole South Bay. With a variety of trails to suit whatever your workout needs may be. Parking is limited, so early birds get the worms, and a great sweat to kick start your morning!

EVENT GUIDE RESPECT THE DISTANCE 34
For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
1 2 3 4
TRAIN
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..
SALT
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for every race.

For the first time in San Jose, we put out a challenge to see who were the kings and queens of fitness in the area. Many stepped up to the plate, and registered for BOTH Columbia Muddy Buddy San Jose (9/30) and the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose Half Marathon or Mini Marathon. Rock ‘n’ Mud Challengers climbed, crawled, rumbled and stumbled their way through the Muddy Buddy course at Joseph D. Grant Regional Park last weekend. Now, with little time to recover physically, they will take it to the streets on Sunday with mud still under their fingernails and in-between their toes.
If you missed out this year, do not fear, for we will see if you are up for the challenge again in 2013. Sign up early to commit yourself and to save money! Best of luck to our 2012 Rock ‘n’ Mud Challengers and congratulations on your performances over the past two weekends- you are all studs!
