THE CELEBRITY CULTURE will invade this year’s Stoneleigh kit car show in early May, but in the best possible way. Two dedicated petrolheads, in the form of Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson, will be coming along to the UK’s biggest kit car event to wander around, see the cars, meet show visitors and, I hope, have a day they’ll enjoy while inevitably earning their appearance fees. While we had nothing to do with their appearance, I couldn’t have chosen two better celebs to come along. Both have driven kit cars in the past and certainly Vicki spent a few years racing a Ginetta. I reckon they’ve both given the kit car industry a fair shout when they’ve had the chance of putting the cars in front of the camera for their various TV programmes over the years (which is more than can be said for the recent Top Gear debacle!). And their attendance at Stoneleigh can only be good news. It’s easy to be cynical about signing up a celeb to make an appearance at an event such as this, but their attendance will almost certainly increase the numbers coming through the gate and add a real excitement to the show. And the kit industry could certainly do with a bit of that, after a tough year in 2009, both financially and with the introduction of IVA. There used to be a time when celebrities were regulars at the kit car shows (invariably, those shows organised by Grosvenor Exhibitions, the company behind Stoneleigh) and I’m absolutely delighted to see this investment returning in 2010. If it gets new people to the event, increases attendance and raises the profile of the industry, it’ll be money well spent that will benefit us all. Of course, the Stoneleigh show is an absolute must for any kit car enthusiast. I’ve been going since the mid ’80s and it’s still the one event that I look forward to the most. It’s where the kit car scene really shines, with a spectacular display of privately owned cars outside, matched by a convincing trade presence in the main halls. So make the effort this year and bring your kit car if you have one. And if you don’t, get the dates in your diary (Sunday May 2nd/Monday May 3rd) and come along to look at all the cars you might buy in the future. It’s a fab day out.

The Vortex GT3 is one of the kit industry’s best kept secrets, but all that looks set to change with a more focused approach to the project that may finally see it fulfil its obvious potential. CKC’s editor drives the latest incarnation.

WITH GTM CARS having recently announced that it is ceasing production of the Libra while it redevelops the whole product range over the next twelve months, if you’re in the market for a professionally designed coupé with production car aspirations and entertaining performance, the kit car scene isn’t over-flowing with options. Perfect timing, then, for the latest incarnation of the Vortex to make a case for itself. Not heard of it? We don’t blame you. Despite being in constant production ever since its original launch way back in 1997 and being one of the prettiest independent designs we’ve come across, just 21 of these beauties have been sold over its 13 year lifespan. By any means of
measurement, it’s not what you’d call a sales bonanza! But there are genuine reasons for optimism that this fabulous looking coupé may at last get the recognition it deserves. Main man at Vortex, Chris Greville-Smith has recently retired from his regular day job and can now concentrate 100 per cent on the project, and the latter has a number of new developments (not least a powerful 3-litre V6 behind the driver) that should lift its appeal even further with potential customers. But first a little history. Originally shown in 1997 and initially marketed as a Phantom GTR, the coupé was designed by Chris in his spare time, while working as a designer for Land Rover/Jaguar. He’s pretty accomplished at what he does, too, having been team leader for exterior design on both the Freelander 1 and 2 projects and most recently being the designer of, amongst many things, the Jaguar XK’s rear lights and wheels. His life of design has

also extended to race cars, which he designed from the ground up through most of his adult life, producing over 20 different cars, all of which used the Phantom name. And they were successful too, winning nine championships and holding lap records at most UK circuits. And it’s this aspect of his career that’s been vital in the Vortex’s development. Chris isn’t just clever with a pencil and felt tips, he understands what’s needed underneath the bodywork in order to make a car work. When the company was originally set up in 1997, Chris had three other partners in the business. Two were effectively silent partners who worked within the motor industry and who manufactured the industry standard body moulds from which each Vortex body is made. The other was Norman Morris, who was the first port of call for customers during the years Chris had to concentrate on the day job. Norman remains involved with the project. Regular readers will be familiar with the Haynes Roadster that Ashley Gardiner has built from scratch in his shed. Adam Wilkins takes a look at the finished car.

The home built trailer is quite awkward to load up but, since it’s borrowed from a friend, its thriftiness is compensation for the extra effort it necessitates. Before the car can be winched up, Ashley carries out a swift but necessary modification to the short, heavy ramps. The last time he borrowed it, he fitted a new jockey wheel. Whatever’s required to get the job done is met with a nonchalant will to just get on and do it. It’s this same have-a-go attitude – driven in part by a strict budget – that’s seen a collection of chassis tubes on the lean-to floor transform into a completed, IVA approved car in just 18 months. Regular readers will need no introduction to Ashley. He has covered the build of his car in regular instalments since the July 2009 issue. He has wanted to build a car since his student days, when he saw a Westfield being built on the telly. But with no garage at the time, he settled for a series of hatchbacks with increasingly powerful engines. For instance, he built a Fiat Bravo with a hybrid turbo engine and retro fitted ABS to it. It’s clear that he’s of a naturally emperical persuasion. Beside cars, he also dabbles with model aeroplanes and DIY electronic projects. However, when Ashley
got an IT job with the council, the 20mpg hatch had to go in favour of a more economical commuter car. Project cars were firmly on the back-burner while his focus turned to saving for his first house. It turned out that a surprising number of his new workmates were kit car builders and owners. This opened Ashley’s eyes to just how big the kit car industry is. Previously only being aware of Caterham and Westfield, he discovered a world that offered some tantalisingly affordable kits. Even so, there was still nothing about that would come in under his budget. It was when he accompanied his colleague Chris to collect his Sylva Riot kit that the conversation turned to what Ashley’s minimal budget would stretch to. Chris suggested buying a copy of Ron Champion’s How To Build A Sports Car book. The next day, he went to buy the book but actually came away with Chris Gibbs’ sequel. Ashley’s imagination was fired. By being careful and doing as much of the work himself as possible, he could have a Haynes Roadster on the road for the price of a conventional starter kit. In true Locost spirit, cost was a major factor with Ashley’s build. He budgeted for his car in the reverse way to how most people do, taking his £4000 total and dividing it amongst the items he’d need. It looked like he might even be able to complete it under budget. Naturally, he had a lot of questions before took the plunge. Joining the forum on the Haynes website provided the answers to all his queries (and some he hadn’t thought of). The next job was to learn to weld, so he enrolled for an evening course at his local college. It’s something he’d highly recommend to anyone tackling a similar project, and he also came away from it with a City and Guilds qualification. More importantly, it means that all the welds on his car are strong and up to the job. They look as good as you’d find on a professionally built chassis.

Stan Dent built his first special 54 years ago, has never stopped building and restoring interesting cars, and has recently completed a one-off three-wheeler at the age of 78. Ian Stent met him. MEETING PEOPLE LIKE Stan Dent is one of the reasons I enjoy this scene so much. He has lived a life of motoring that makes the rest of us look like rank amateurs. If there are ‘talkers’ and ‘doers’ in life, then Stan has both feet firmly planted in the latter corner. And even for those of us who hope to manage at least a bit of ‘doing’ when we look back on our achievements, Stan’s efforts are bewildering. His pursuit of his hobby has never waned, and from building his first three-
