Arundel Town Council
Arundel and the wider community is full of energy and talent. The fruits of this are seen and enjoyed by all at our annual Arundel Festival, now in its 31st year. This year we are working with a new concert promoter who will be presenting three exciting and varied picnic concerts, each with a firework finale. The British Shakespeare Company will also be joining us to present two magical evenings in the new Collector Earl's Garden with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. We look forward to welcoming you again to this year's Festival. Edward Norfolk
W
elcome to what is in effect the very first brochure of the newly formed Arundel Town Festival. In essence nothing much has changed from the previous 30 years but with recent demise of the Festival Society and the retirement from the Fringe of Don Ayling after many long years of selfless hard work, it was felt a bit of reorganising was necessary to pull all the elements of the Festival together. So, under the Chairmanship of Bill Beere, we’ve become the Arundel Town Festival. Although we’re still in a period of transition, we’ve managed to put together a really exciting series of events including some new departures and the return of some old favourites. As well as the ever-popular Gallery Trail, Theatre Trail, concerts and other theatre and music events, there’s the Arundel Town Fair on Bank Holiday Monday, music in the Jubilee Gardens, the return of Shakespeare to the Castle and thanks to the very generous sponsorship of Terry Bedford, a last night fireworks extravaganza. We hope to use this year’s Festival as a stepping-stone to something much bigger and better in 2009. This year the main issue that we’ve had to wrestle with is a lack of money. As soon as this years festival is over work will start to raise funds for next year and we’ll be looking for sponsors both large and small. We would welcome any inquiries from potential sponsors for all the events next year but we are also hoping to start a Friends scheme offering priority booking, discounted tickets, a regular newsletter with updates on developments. Please get in touch via the box office if you can help in any way. Meanwhile, browse through the brochure to see what’s on offer and go out and buy some tickets. It promises to be a great week so don’t stay at home watching television – you might make new discoveries that could potentially change your life! Arundel Town Festival Committee

Lesley Garrett Interview
Page 8
by Justin Williams
When I was asked to interview Lesley Garrett I couldn’t immediately say I was the biggest fan. I didn’t really know her. After speaking with her, I now am. What an inspiration she is! Caring Mother, NSPCC ambassador, dancer, TV judge, TV celebrity, oh, and her day job...great singer! JW: So Lesley you are booked to play at Arundel Castle on Sunday 24th August. How do you feel? LG: Very excited about that. I’ve never played there before, it will be my first time, I’m so excited I love a new venue. JW: You play in stately homes and castles all the time, don’t you?. LG: I will sing anywhere love, I always find the lovely historical settings which I am sure Arundel will be, always go well as the atmosphere is set up for you and people feel they are already getting value for money as they have the castle to look at. JW: It’s a truly great atmosphere at Arundel Castle and I really hope you enjoy it. LG: There’s nothing better than seeing a great wave of coloured picnics rugs, hampers and wine and union jacks and everyone having a fab time in the evening, there’s no better way to spend a great summers eve in Britain I think. JW: Is that typically British then? LG: Oh very much so. We are completely insane in this country. I have only ever done these concerts in Britain but I think we probably invented it. I was recently taken to have Sunday lunch with some colleagues from the Royal Opera House who were from California, they arrived at these mutual friends of ours and to their horror we ate outside. They thought we were completely mad and sat outside wrapped in rugs but to us it was a lovely summers evening. JW: You have a great website? LG: Well I think you need to keep up with the times and have a decent website, it’s a wonderful way to keep up with the fans and keep my fans updated. Wish I had time to do a blog. JW: Tell me about your current projects? LG: Amazing Grace is mostly classical and a fantastic mixture of different types of beautiful music and comes out at the same time as my new production of Carousel in mid November. The story of Carousel is very spiritual and the album is as well so the two work together well. JW: How did the part come about? LG: Well I did the Sound of Music last year, the one that Connie Fisher did, I was the Mother Abbess. JW: Yes, you got rave reviews! LG: Yes I did (laughing). That was my first ever production of a musical really and loved it so much I couldn’t wait to do another one. It takes enormous stamina and it’s a different technique.

JW: Does Leslie Garrett always wear posh frocks? Every picture I have of you for the festival magazine has you in an amazing outfit! LG: Thank you. There are a small handful of designers that I work with regularly that are truly wonderful and they are Caroline Castigliano who I’m working with at the moment, also a lot with Jenny Packham and Maria Grachvogel is a great favourite and Vivian Westwood, of course. JW: How long will you sing for at Arundel? LG: I should think about two and a half hours and we are doing all the Land of Hope and Glory stuff. Even if it’s dry everyone will still be getting their umbrellas out! JW: Will you focus just on your new album or will it be a mixture? LG: It will be a mixture. The first half of the programme will be classical and the second half everything but classical. I also have a Tenor with me, Paul Austin Kelly, performing some duets – I like to have a nice man when I can! JW: What would you like to ask the audience to do? LG: Yes, get them to tune for Land of Hope and Glory. I want lots of audience participation. There will be everything. Of course, I will sing You will never walk alone, that’s brill. We will get all the Arundel scousers out with their scarves! (chuckles) JW: Who is the best artist you have worked with? LG: Oh, that’s a tough one! Well there’s two actually. Bryn Terfel who is staggering and Michael Ball whose just lovely and extraordinary exponent of the art.

JW: What and who are your inspirations? LG: All over the place from my children, husband, family. People close to home mean so much to me. I engineered my entire career to be available for my family giving up international work as soon as my children came along and thought I would try and be a national treasure like Thora Hird! Brits are an extraordinary nation and our values are what are so important. We hold some things so dear and we live by the truth. Humility is another one of our great attributes, the fact we never stop striving and You will never walk alone is a LOVELY song from that point of view. JW: What was it like to be awarded a CBE and was it expected? LG: No, not at all I was gob smacked (laughs). Very humbled by that and probably the greatest achievement of my life, it takes your breath away when the Queen gives you a medal for doing something you love doing and I am completely devoted to. JW: You are a leading celebrity for the NSPCC. What got you involved? LG: They have just made me an Ambassador, there are only 7 and I am one of them along with Kylie Minogue, Peter Andre and Johnny Wilkinson and Amir Khan, the boxer. What interested me in the NSPCC was having my own children and wanting other children to be loved as much as mine are. I went to one of their therapeutic centres in the south of London. I was only due to stay for one hour but stayed the whole day watching the incredible work that the NSPCC therapists do there with the badly damaged and cruelly treated children. To my mind it’s very wrong that our society doesn’t take responsibility for our children that have been damaged by our society. JW: You have lead the way for opera artists to cross over into mainstream. Was this planned? LG: God no, nothing I have ever done is planned, sweetheart, I just follow my nose!! But the FA Cup was the first event I did for the NSPCC and we raised £150,000. It was the last thing that ever happened on that pitch. Elton John was my warm up. No, nothing planned. It’s my complete inability to say ‘no’ to anything. I met Bruce Forsyth and my husband Peter the same week as I did the Bruce Forsyth Christmas Special – my first TV. I never looked back really, I did a TV series, made an album, had a baby, did a concert tour, another baby, another concert tour. JW: What’s next for Lesley Garrett? LG: I would love to do a film score. I have always wanted to sing at the Oscars. I would love to do the next Diamonds are Forever. So a Hollywood musical, film, yes the next James Bond would do, I’m not fussed!!

Music Around Town
www.arundelmusic.co.uk or this years music programme there are some fantastic concerts taking place in venues around the town featuring some top class performers. This year we’ve been fortunate in receiving a grant through the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ scheme and coupled with generous and gratefully received sponsorship from Neil Holland Architects, Venture New Generation Portraits and some other donors who wish to remain anonymous, we’ve been able to keep the standards high and the ticket prices low. We would also like to thank Michael Nott for kindly providing the lighting for the concerts at St Nicholas' Church. Among our performers are Piers Adams, regularly described as the world’s greatest recorder player, Guy Bovet, one of the world’s most renowned organists, the musicians of Sounds Underground, who count among Britain’s best young string players and Talkestra, recently nominated for Best Classical Act at the Brighton Festival. Since many of the performers are involved in two, three or more events they’ll be around town for a few days so there’ll be plenty of chances to meet them. One new departure for this year and something we hope to develop in coming years is to bring concerts into new and unexpected venues. This year as well as concerts in private houses we’re very grateful to Absolutely Organics for hosting a mouth-watering series of three concerts by the fabulous young cellist Oliver Coates. We’re also very grateful to the owners of the private houses for their use – there’s something magical about the house concerts that would be very hard to find anywhere else. But beware – there’s not much room so get your tickets early.

Drama Around Town At The Basement @ The Crossbush Beefeater Monday 25th to Saturday 30th August at 7.45pm
One Minute A child goes missing. The witnesses’ statements are inconclusive and the police struggle without a clear case or understanding of a criminal motive. Like ripples from a stone in calm water, five characters, each with a different degree of separation from this tragic event, go about their lives trying to make sense of the unfathomable. Two men and three women are in thrall to the brutality and generosity of London; each has a broken dream; each contributes to the heartbreak of others.
St.Nicholas’ Church
Presented by by Simon Stephens
This is a beautiful, slowburning, lyrical play about loss and devotion - a disquieting portrait of the many lives that are united in the single moment it takes for a child to disappear. Simon Stephens won the Pearson Award for Best New Play for Port and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Herons. Theatre Akimbo are a bold, new company aiming to deliver theatre that is relevant, inventive, original and leading edge in its genre. Theatre everyone should see.

Arundel Gallery Trail elebrating 20 years of creativity, this years Arundel Gallery Trail is set to be the best yet, with over a 100 artists and makers taking part in 54 venues. Sculptors, painters, printers, ceramicists and jewellers are amongst the many exhibitors showing this year, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk to many of the artists, whilst discovering Arundel's beautiful period homes. It’s a great day out for art collectors and enthusiasts alike.
C
Venue opening times Sat & Sun 12.00 – 5.30 Mon to Wed 2.00 – 5.30
The Trail has become an essential part of the South’s art calendar drawing together a wide range of established artists as well as showcasing much unknown local talent. Look out for ‘Raindrops’ an installation by students of Oak Grove College which provides a very special education for children age 7 -14 with learning difficulties. Discover Northbrook College students Sally Colledge, Kay Johns and Charlie Stanley and not to be missed, up and coming sculptor Stuart Slade’s ‘Curious Scuttle-heads’. An installation of five freestanding sculptures on the A27 East roundabout which mark the start of the Arundel Gallery Trail. The Scuttle-heads are a race of mutants from the future. Part insect…part human…part machine. WHAT DO THEY WANT FROM US…
Joss Davis
Oak Grove rain drops installation
We are also delighted to welcome Philip Jackson D.L., M.A., F.R.B.S., F.R.S.A., whose four headlining sculptures can be found in the gardens of Arundel Castle. These 4 sculptures represent a selection of Philip's personal work and are quite different from the monumental public figures for which he is often commissioned, such as his magnificent equestrian sculpture of the Queen which stands in Windsor Great Park. The Castle pieces are reminiscent of 18th century Venetian procurators and are beautifully sculpted, creating an overwhelming sense of drama and intrigue. Derek Davis

We could not have started the ‘ART FOR LIFE’ project if it hadn’t been for the kindness and enthusiasm of visitors to the Gallery Trail and Arundel's residents. In the last 5 years, the town has raised over £17,000, providing 25 new starter homes for disaster victims, electricity for a school, and a few months ago a plot of land where the community of El Sunzal, in the municipality of La Libertad, El Salvador, will soon start the construction of a much needed school. This year we would like to help Sunzal by providing them with a health clinic so we invited the whole of Arundel to capture images of life in their town. These wonderful photographs have been transferred onto canvas and are exhibited for sale in the ''OUR ARUNDEL'' venue at St. Nicholas church.

Each year the Trail is organised by a small group of volunteers however many of its elements would not be possible without the generous support of our 2008 sponsors; Neil Holland Architects, Andrew Borley Architects, Thorpe Wheatley Limited, Alchemy PR, Venture and Artfair 365. If you are interest in becoming a sponsor please email: info@arundelgallerytrail.co.uk You can pick up your Trail map at any venue, it shows examples of exhibitors work. THE BHUNDU BOYS and special guests presented by Arundel Fairtrade group The Bhundu boys rose to fame in the late 1980's, when their uplifting mix of Zimbabwean Chimurenga music combined with Western rock and roll influences earned them fans as diverse as Andy Kershaw, John Peel and even Madonna, with whom they played three sell-out shows at Wembley Stadium. Their rousing, original sound - often copied, but never bettered - is guaranteed to get you on your feet, but get there early, as there are no tickets in advance for this rare live date - strictly first come, first served. A variety of hot and cold food will be available courtesy of Pallant of Arundel, Absolutely Organics and others, plus a licensed bar debuting the soon-to-be classic Arundel Fairtrade mojito. Families welcome. Cost on the gate - pay what you like!
