Updates on the solid wood market in Canada and the US provided by Keta Kosman, publisher and editor of Madison’s Lumber Reporter. February Lumber Market Analysis By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison’s Lumber Reporter
March 1st, 2013 #06164 Page #15
Madison’s at the end of February that production is shifting north into British Columbia because the US mills just cannot get enough logs to run through their mills. A huge spike in demand from California, a very loyal market for green Douglas fir along with home builders in the US northeast, is credited for the additional pressure on lumber supply. Its like the entire state of California woke up all at once and started looking for Douglas fir at the same time, some sources said.
As January melted into February and truly bad weather hit the North The real star of the month, though, was Oriented Strand Board 7/16” American continent, especially the eastern half, makers, buyers, and sellers of Ontario. As warned in last month’s submission to your Component Manufacturing solid wood products continued working tirelessly. There was no slowdown in Advertiser, OSB prices were bound to go up. The basic rules of supply and lumber and panel trading as US customers continued their relentless, although demand apply here, more starkly than in other solid wood commodities because still small volume, purchasing. there are fewer producers of panel products than there are of dimension lumber. In early February everyone was waiting to see what China would do Madison’s warning has come true: OSB prices skyrocketed by $70 in the month in advance of the big Chinese New Year two-week break. They were not of February alone, to C$445 msf. That is an unbelievable $240 improvement, or disappointed. After a brief lull at the end of January, buyers from China bought 54 per cent, over one year ago. at surprisingly large volumes just before stepping away from offices for what When one considers that customers in the US have not yet begun to order seemed like barely a few days. Producers and exporters whirled like dervishes in earnest for spring building needs, and China is just coming out of a muted to fill all the orders they could. No one knew, after all, if this extended winter year-and-a-half in terms of lumber buying, one can’t help but be extremely demand would continue until spring. bullish on lumber prices. At least in the short term. Madison’s would venture Prices on most commodities rested on a even keel for the first half of that lumber and panel prices in North America are not going to fall before midFebruary before picking up strength for the final two weeks. The exceptions were: summer, if they do even then. Douglas fir, studs, and OSB in the central zone. There simply was not enough A major reason this assertion can be made so confidently is because the availability of these particular items, even as customers tried to hold off buying. producers are consistently reporting sawmill order files of several weeks. Even WSPF KD 2x4 PET studs gained $26 in the month, to finish February at at the increased production compared to a year ago, producers simply cannot US$366 mfbm. keep inventory in their yards and are regularly running wood which they have Douglas fir green 2x4 #2&Btr, remarkably scarce due to log supply issues on pre-sold for weeks in advance. One source actually said to Madison’s, toward the US northwest coast, jumped $25 from the end of January, to US$380 mfbm. the end of February, that the order file was out so far they “didn’t even bother Douglas fir log prices inland of Washington State are becoming difficult to peg counting the weeks.” as local producers scramble for fibre. They must bid against offshore buyers at In some regions the shortage of logs is a temporary issue, due to weather. log auctions; often the results are not pretty. Douglas fir producers reported to In the US south, where a significant proportion of pine logs are sourced from the bayou, there has been a lot of rain lately. Reduced logging activity there is the reason southern yellow pine prices have jumped approximately $20 in the past two weeks. This situation is expected to correct as spring approaches. In other areas though, the problem of getting logs to the sawmills is only just beginning to be felt. The loss of operators, both in timber harvesting and in log and lumber transport, during the downturn is by now well known. Last week the Conference Board of Canada released a report saying that Canadas trucking industry may face a shortage of 25,000 truckers or more by 2020 due to an aging workforce and a lack of young people and immigrants taking the job. There is every reason to believe the reality in the US is the same. As this year’s spring building season gets underway, and US home building marches toward recovery next year, the important question of who is going to be moving all that wood will be impossible to ignore.

Adverti$er Labor Will be a Critical Issue to Our Recovery You Saw it in the
March 1st, 2013 #06164 Page #16
WALL PANEL EQUIPMENT
I have written extensively and spoken at several seminars over the past six months about our expected labor shortage, and yet there are times I am not sure that some component manufacturers really think this is going to be an issue. Over the past five years, our industry (construction) has lost nearly 33% of our workforce and we are trying to recover some of those lost jobs now. But, don’t expect to get the two million plus employees back into our industry. Multiple studies now show that many of those employees found opportunities in other industries or have retired. And with about 1/5 of our current workforce retiring each year (construction industry), we are not able to replace those employees rapidly enough. Specifically to our industry, we could see a high demand/shortage of truss technicians and higher skilled assemblers. Lennar Homes recently reported field delays of nearly 25 days in some areas due to field labor shortages. According to a McGraw-Hill survey of Architects and Engineers done in June of 2012, A/E firms are predicting a shortage of nearly 80% of those entering the workforce to replace those who will be leaving/retiring from their professions. And add to the mix that in many cases we will be competing against contractors and framers who anticipate a similar shortage of about 50%. I have talked with several component manufacturers in the past two months, and they indicate that we are already seeing demand for designers similar to what occurred in 2004/2005. Many of you who are general managers and or owners in a company know that we must control costs because though our business may be increasing we are not seeing margins return as hoped. And going to outside design firms or outsourcing overseas is not going to solve the real problem; we must find a way to attract new “blood” to our industry.

Because most schools (912, Vocational, Technical, and University) do not promote the virtues of our industry, we need to be proactive and get more involved at the educational level and promote what we do. This is similar to what our industry did with Fire Officials and Building Inspectors. But the battle ground is at the educational system level. Becoming more involved in our schools, providing project opportunities, participating in career days or service projects will start the process of educating both students and teachers on the opportunities we offer. Get involved with local truss and other manufacturing associations and participate in efforts to promote construction as a career path. Hire interns and create programs to help pay their educational costs while providing them valuable experience. I did this often and it worked well, sometimes it even taught some of my designers new software techniques. Or, you can simply not address this issue and watch your costs increase and you find that you are no longer competitive. Though there may be concern for labor shortages, I also think this is going to be a great opportunity for component manufacturers to expand. With field labor experiencing the same shortages, it should be a good growth opportunity for component manufacturers. The writer Ben Hershey is President of 4Ward Consulting and a Past-President of SBCA. 4Ward Consulting provides management, manufacturing and new product development consulting services (www.4WardConsult.com).
