Looking at all of the articles, one thing is common. Prices are going to be an issue. Watch your bid language and protect yourself as much as possible. Don’t get caught with a project that takes away your profit margin.

Keep an eye on inventory. Balancing buying against the price curve is going to be difficult, but worse than that could be shortages that lead to substituting higher grades. Any way you look at it, unless you can qualify your bids, bid margins will be going up.

Friday, Week #13, March 29, 2013
“Closing In On the April Squeeze” Slippery, tricky, iffy-weather-ed March has almost passed. For most of the country, Easter is the turning date for weather. From here through Labor Day we will be blessed with ideal job sites. That leaves us with the simple elements of supply, demand, and the arm wrestling between producers and consumers. Let's start with supply. Over the last year we have seen a 10% increase in lumber production and a 20% increase in housing starts. That's why lumber prices are firm. Over the last three weeks we have heard more conversations about increased production, which is overture #1. Those conversations also explain why its not going to happen in April, or even May. Unmothballing a production facility takes months. Investing $400 million to ramp up output, (Georgia Pacific) will take a year +. Adding a third shift for mills having only run two requires a new kiln ( significant capital investments.) Meanwhile, MILL maintenance down times are accelerating. Bottom line, there is no immediate supply relief. March has been a net liquidation month for consumers, meaning field inventories have declined. Simultaneously, jobsite framing is gaining momentum. Capped supply, declining dealer inventory, and increasing demand? That's not a question, is it? It’s reality. April / May 2013 is not a time to be thinking long term. The focus is IMMEDIATE. The moderate, spotty lumber and OSB softness we feel today is not going to create a significant price break, but it will create an "availability" buying opportunity. If you need lumber for the next two months, now is the time to build some inventory. Remember; "buy through the peak to avoid buying at the top." Happy Trading...ml P.S. Those pin-pointed projected peaks and valleys, Forecasted Decision Points, for the next 12 months can be seen in Layman’s Lumber Guide’s Monthly or Weekly lumber & OSB market analyses.

Will lumber prices stay above $400? It wasn’t long ago you could call up your local mill or distributor and purchase a truck of lumber for about $10,000. Today however is a different story. The price of lumber has almost doubled in the last three years, meanwhile credit has gotten tighter and banks are not willing to increase lines. So many retailers and manufactures are now wondering what has changed and how long will lumber stay at these levels. Canadian SPF supplies around one third of North Americas Lumber needs, and during the recession the US Markets could not support the Canadian by David Jara Sawmills. They were forced to find other markets for the products. Asia was one of these new markets that opened up. While the US struggled to maintain 500,000 housing starts, China’s economy was booming. Today the US is slowly coming back and there is still steady demand from Asia, this coupled with limited production is causing lumber to skyrocket. Many buyers have found themselves trying cover [or bid] jobs based off of the activity they see in their local markets. There may not be much activity in the Upper Midwest in February, and one would think that lumber prices should stay relatively flat, so when a job quote is put in at the current market; meanwhile lumber prices jump another $20/MBF, taking any profit out of the quote. In the past some buyers could source lumber from overseas. However, importing countries like Europe and South America are not coming back at the same pace. In appears lumber imports are struggling to gain market share in the US, further depleting alternative supply. This could be a result of those countries have also established a customer base in Asia, and they are not prepared to abandon those markets till the US economy shows signs of sustained growth. Lumber is sometimes overlooked as commodity; it is however a key building block to North American living. As the economy improves and construction becomes more active, lumber will become a vital commodity. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange trades Random Length Lumber Futures, a MAY contract for 110mbf of Random Length SPF was up to $408, today is trading at $381. The open interest on all open contracts ranges from 8,000 to 12,000. Today open interest is at 8,700. With lumber being one of the best performing commodities in 2012, it’s only a matter of time before speculators start participating in lumber and get the open interest back into the 11,000’s. Could this drive the futures price up over $500? Chart courtesy of FC Stone

Updates on the solid wood market in Canada and the US provided by Keta Kosman, publisher and editor of Madison’s Lumber Reporter. Madison’s is a North American lumber and panel commodity price guide and market analysis newsletter, which has been published every Friday out of Vancouver, BC since 1952. For more information please visit http://www.madisonsreport.com
March Lumber Market Analysis By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison's Lumber Reporter
they are back, sheepishly requesting the unacceptable deal of the day before. If they are lucky that offer stands; a lot of times quotes have been raised in the interim. There is nowhere else to get wood after all, except from producers. And everyone knows that by now. Repeat this scenario week after week for a year and a half.
March 26, 2013
Even as almost all solid wood commodity prices continued to rise through March, big questions remained about the financial state of the North American forest products industry. While it is certain that the terrible downturn of the past six years is over, opinions wary greatly on the nature of this burgeoning recovery. The most bearish among us point to the tenuous economic state of tiny, far-away European countries. Industry veterans express outward caution while inwardly celebrating the relentless rise of lumber and panel prices over the last five quarters. And the bullish gleefully observe seemingly non-stop announcements of sawmill investments, openings, purchases, and restarts. Determined efforts by customers to push back against ever-rising lumber prices came to nought in March as sawmill order files remained at six weeks or longer. Solid wood producers figured out several months ago that customers -- be they reloads, wholesalers, big builders, or the box stores -- continue to keep inventories minimal. Whether due to extreme difficulties getting credit, or sheer lack of confidence in this spring US home building season, large volume lumber buyers remain in the just-in-time habit. For more than a year customers have been calling sawmills back every three days for smallish orders, all the while making great shows of balking at increasing lumber prices. Counter-offers are ruthlessly laughed off. Insults and foul language are exchanged until customers slam down the phone in disgust. Within one day
It was in November 2011 that Madison's Lumber Reporter declared the recent epic lumber industry downturn over, and -- sure enough -- since then cash prices on benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr have risen $168, or more than 41 per cent, to a hearty US$408 mfbm. Weakness in lumber futures around mid-March did nothing to dampen the strength of the cash market. Several rounds of bad weather in eastern Canada and the east and mid-west of the US are blamed for slowed building sites and particularly for transportation problems. Expectations are that these effects will be short-lived, as the days get longer, the weather improves, and job sites dry out. In Canada the CN Rail is causing absolute conniptions with sawmills. Rail cars simply do not arrive. When they do there are too few, far too late. Railway representatives claim bad weather in Alberta for these abominable delays, but industry veterans know there must be something else going on. Bad weather is normal for Canada in spring, but this year's rail car availability is much, much worse than usual. Sawmills are concerned about the coming two months; as fresh produce begins to move north from the US it is usual for rail cars to get diverted to move those delicate items. Fruit growers pay a premium to get their crops to stores quickly and lumber manufacturers are traditionally ignored during these crucial seasons. If sourcing rail cars is this bad now, how much worse is it going to be in May? Meanwhile studs prices have absolutely run away. The price jumps week after week are surprising everyone, and don't look like they will flatten any time soon. Studs producers laugh even as they can't possibly keep up with demand. Order files have gotten out so far producers don't even bother to say when customers can expect delivery. Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 PET studs have risen $190, or 45 per cent, from a deplorable US$235 mfbm in November 2011 to US$425 in mid-March 2013. And rising. Where will it stop? Nobody knows. Sustained demand from the US together with a surge of contract buying from China is keeping studs mills across North America running overtime. There are some serious problems developing on the west coast. In the US, producers can not afford to buy Douglas fir logs on the open market. Even with green and KD Douglas fir lumber prices very much improved over last year, the ravenous demand of customers from China for timbers of this specialty coastal species keeps the price of logs well out of reach to local producers. Canadian coastal sawmills reported to Madison's at the beginning of March that traditional US customers for Douglas fir lumber, in California and the US northeast, were buying larger volumes of coastal lumber north of the border as that product became increasingly difficult to source in Washington State and Oregon. As long as the draconian restriction on timber harvesting in Oregon continues, that state is only going to experience further fiscal difficulties. Federal government payments to replace state timber revenues expired this March, after being extended a couple of times. Almost all log sales on the US west coast come off private land. If the Oregon coastal lumber producers can not access fibre due to competition from overseas and logging moratoriums on state land, how exactly are the small, family-owned Douglas fir mills supposed to survive?
