A toothpaste factory had a problem. They sometimes shipped empty boxes without the tube inside. This challenged their Thomas McAnally - Editor perceived quality with the buyers and distributors. Understanding how important the relationship with them was, the CEO of the company assembled his top people. They decided to hire an external engineering company to solve their empty boxes problem. The project followed the usual process: budget and project sponsor allocated, RFP, and third-parties selected. Six months (and $8 million) later they had a fantastic solution - on time, on budget, and high quality. Everyone in the project was pleased.

They solved the problem by using a high- tech precision scale that would sound a bell and flash lights whenever a toothpaste box weighed less than it should. The line would stop, someone would walk over, remove the defective box, and then press another button to re-start the line. As a result of the new package monitoring process, no empty boxes were being shipped out of the factory.

With no more customer complaints, the CEO felt the $8 million was well spent. He then reviewed the line statistics report and discovered the number of empty boxes picked up by the scale in the first week was consistent with projections, however, the next three weeks were zero! The estimated rate should have been at least a dozen boxes a day. He had the engineers check the equipment, they verified the report as accurate.

Puzzled, the CEO traveled down to the factory, viewed the part of the line where the precision scale was installed, and observed just ahead of the new $8 million dollar solution sat a $20 desk fan blowing the empty boxes off the belt and into a bin. He asked the line supervisor what that was about. “Oh, that,” the supervisor replied, “ Bert , the kid from maintenance, put it there because he was tired of walking over, removing the box and re-starting the line every time the bell rang. The lumber market is not static. It is fluid, constantly moving. The repeating cycles I speak of are seasonal, primarily influenced by winter weather. A "normal" winter, ending in early March, creates a lumber market that closely tracks the Forecasted Decision Point trend as seen on the top graph. A very mild winter will create an early cyclical peak as we "borrow" lumber demand from spring with early housing starts and home improvements. Conversely, a prolonged winter will create a delayed spring peak as consumer and mill inventories are "stretched", waiting for jobsites to become more navigable. This creates "pent up demand" as backlogs of sales are piled on top of increasing spring demand, thus setting up a very strong final spring/ early summer rally. The latter is the 2013 situation. Regardless of the winter influence, the cycles are still our trading guide. As you can see by the charts today, we are approaching the 10-year and FDP seasonal highs, however the market has over extended its spring correction cycle. (Blue Composite line) This set up is not a surprise, rather a cycle option and opportunity to cover late spring / early summer needs at better prices. The trading strategy for this late April correction is to buy through the top‌cover needs through the anticipated peak at Memorial Day. Happy Trading...ml

Adverti$er Tight Supply Pushes Studs to a New Price Level YOU SAW IT IN THE
After a rollercoaster of a First Quarter, no one would argue that the lumber markets have improved from a year ago. But in some cases some may wonder; have prices increased too much too quick. The last few weeks may be showing signs this is true, and that prices may be in for a bit of a correction. However, in the case of Studs this may not be entirely true. According to a recent survey by Wood Markets, in 2012 Canfor, West Fraser, Tolko and Sierra Pacific were among the largest producers in North America. Combined, those four companies have over 60 mills, and only a handful of them are dedicated to producing Studs. This limited capacity has been keeping Stud supply relatively by David Jara tight. Another factor to consider is export, and more specifically what items are being exported. To make it through the most recent economic recession many lumber producers looked to overseas markets to keep their production moving. The majority of the lumber exported was Random Length Dimension. Meanwhile, limited volumes of PET Studs were sold into these overseas markets. Now that the US housing markets are coming back, so is the price of studs. Overall production will increase, but it will probably not increase as much in the area of Stud Production, for now the capacity in North America is limited in the area of Stud Production. A benchmark most buyers can relate to is the correlation between Random Length Lumber Futures (traded on the CME) and the cash price of 2x4 #2 Random Length Dimension. A year ago the July 2012 contact was trading around $300, cash 2x4 was around $280/mbf, pointing to an increase in price. And today a similar relationship, Futures is around $350/mbf Cash is around $355/mbf, pointing to some downward pressure. In general prices are up about $100/mbf from a year ago, and will likely correct a bit, until demand improves or more supply is diverted overseas. Studs on the other hand are a bit more difficult to relate. April 2012 2x4-8’ were $250/mbf today they are closer to $410 up $160/mbf. 2x4-9’s are up $130. This might suggest a correction in price? Unless one takes into consideration the underlying factors that have contributed to these price increases, and the possibility that Studs have found a new level relative to Dimension. Prices for Studs will probably correct a bit, but it is likely they will hold their value better than dimension. As the US housing markets improve so will the demand for lumber. However some items, like Studs, supply will be the key factor on how high prices will go.

Updates on the solid wood market in Canada and the US provided by Keta Kosman, publisher and editor of Madison’s Lumber Reporter. Madison’s is a North American lumber and panel commodity price guide and market analysis newsletter, which has been published every Friday out of Vancouver, BC since 1952. For more information please visit http://www.madisonsreport.com
April Lumber Market Analysis By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison's Lumber Reporter April 24, 2013
April was the month that the North American forest products industry took a collective deep breath, as wood ordered in February and March made its way to customers and was booked onward to end-users. Transportation problems loomed large, extremely large in Canada, as sawmills phoned the two Canadian railways repeatedly asking for the whereabouts of their much-belated rail cars. In the east of Canada, particularly in Quebec, producers could not even resort to trucks and were forced to stop selling at intervals as lumber traders were put to sourcing reliable transporters. Dimension lumber and panel prices, having risen steadily through 2012 and spiked somewhat in 1Q 2013, corrected downward. But still remained much higher than one year ago. Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4s valiantly held steady for several weeks until losing ground at the end of April. Stubborn buyers were able to push through counter-offers as mills watched order files shrink from four weeks down to one or two. No one was complaining, since expectations are that Western 2x4 prices will stabilize well above US$350 mfbm. Both producers and customers agree that continued bad weather in the east and heavy rain in the west in mid-April -- all of which dampened construction activity -- would soon give way to warmer temperatures and drier ground. The consensus is that this price correction is not unexpected, and also that large volumes of wood will be ordered in May. Inventory levels across North America are still extremely weak, and wood put into transit in March is still arriving at its final destination. On the month, WSPF 2x4s lost $25, or 6.5 per cent, from US$390 mfbm at the end of March to US$365 at the end of April. This is still a $85, or 23 per cent, improvement over the same time one year ago, when 2x4s were selling for US$280 mfbm. Veteran players know, however, that US building and renovation activity has not yet gotten truly underway for this year. It is not unexpected that after such remarkable price jumps this year, there will follow a slight downward correction. In fact, in the third week of April some specialty items prices did in fact rise. And at the end of April, thicker OSB panels gained a bit of ground even as the more widely-traded thinner panels continued to drop somewhat. Producers realize that large-volume ordering by customers in China helped support solid wood prices through March. In April those customers stepped back, deterred by high list
prices and unable to get the kind of deals they wanted on the spot market. Sawmills, particularly in studs, adjusted production downward to account for this shift in demand. Several large producers reported being thankful for the downtime as their equipment was in dire need of regular maintenance. Bearish industry watchers are pointing to increased capacity announcements at various North American lumber and panel mills through 1Q 2013 in trying to say that softening prices are driven by increased production. This is not the case; the latest data out of the Western Wood Products Association shows that in February 2013 Canadian sawmills were running at about 85 per cent capacity while those in the US were closer to 82 per cent. With that much idled capacity still waiting to come online, there is no question that demand will once again eclipse supply as spring turns into summer. In a very interesting determination, Mark Kennedy of CIBC World Markets presented to the North American Wholesale Lumbermen's Association (NAWLA) regional meeting in Vancouver, BC, in April that "1.4 million annualized US housing starts is the new 2 million". Kennedy asserted that this is due to the amount of production PERMANENTLY lost due to sawmill sales and dismantling. Kennedy maintains that “the North American lumber industry does not have the same production supply capability for the US housing market that it had in 2004-06.” Madison's agrees wholeheartedly with this assertion, a rare event indeed in this new, untested, world of a recovering North American lumber industry. Western studs experienced the highest high, and biggest subsequent correction, of all prices this year. Canadian studs mills were able to push prices higher even than those in the US due to an unexpected surge of very high volume buying out of China. Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 PET studs ended April at US$405 mfbm, a healthy $70, or 27 per cent, improvement over one year ago. As 2013 marches on, nobody is going to care that this current price is a $45 drop over one month ago. Producers would be reluctant to admit it, but no reasonable lumber trader could have possibly have expected that remarkably high stud price to remain in effect unchallenged. Panicked customers spent all of April throwing out sizable counter-offers which mills were able to resist for a couple of weeks. But as sawmill order files began to shrink sellers were forced to reduce price lists in increments. Continued transportation problems gave sellers some bargaining points, however, as extended delivery delays continued to hamper lumber shipments. As April closed most northern producers said long overdue -- as well as completely absent -- rail cars finally started arriving at manufacturing facilities. As May waxes, with its warmer and drier, weather, building sites across the US will begin ordering wood in earnest. Having become accustomed, in the past six years, of being immediately served for their just-in-time needs, some of those builders and contractors are in for a shock. Expectations are that these latent customers will spend a lot of time phoning different suppliers only to receive the same response from all: prices are up and patience for counteroffers is absent indeed. Safe Lifting Techniques
The back is a network of fragile ligaments, discs, and muscles which can easily be thrown out of order. The back’s complex design breaks down when it’s forced to perform activities it was not designed to do. Lifting with the back twisted or bent just begs for a pulled muscle or ruptured disc. One sure way to risk injuring the back is to lift heavy or bulky loads improperly or unassisted. Never be afraid to ask for help with loads that you know you cannot lift safely. Lift with good sense and a little extra help from a co-worker or mechanical aid when necessary. If you decide you are capable of lifting a light load, make sure you lift correctly. •
Move in so that your feet are close to the base of the object to be lifted.
•
Face the object squarely. Bend your knees and squat over the item to be lifted. In this position, the back gets added lifting strength and power from the legs and arms.
•
•
•
Move up close to the item, because the backbone must act as a supporting column, and it takes the least strain close in. Tilt the item on edge with its long axis straight up so that the center of the weight is as high as possible above the ground. Still squatting, the feet should be set with legs pointed right at the load, with the back straightened, the worker may then grasp the load with both arms and slowly stand up with it, pushing up with the leg muscles. If you can’t lift slowly, you can’t lift safely.
A good way to learn the right from the wrong way to lift is to practice lifting correctly a few times. You will notice that the correct way to lift is the easiest way to lift the load, with the least strain and awkwardness. To lift the wrong way will, over time, cause injury and pain. The back can be damaged quickly but can take a long time to heal.
