When someone asked you about your past, what comes to mind? A broken leg? A failed test? A lost love? A missed order? When recalling our “past� we tend to think of negative circumstances? The reality is, our past is populated with more pleasant and positive events than painful and negative ones. There was a time in our younger childhood when life was good. 2013 started off looking like it would be a banner year, with most Traders having record weeks or months. We also read reports of improved housing, and stock markets that continues to climb. All of this positive news prompted buyers to get bullish on lumber, meanwhile supply seemed to be tight as mills maintained 2-3 week order file for most of the 1st quarter. Many people felt this could be the beginnings of a market that won’t lose momentum for years. Some people are referring to this as the next “Super Cycle”.

Then something happened, in the first week in April lumber prices started to peak buyers pull in their horns a bit, and six weeks later people are wondering what happened. Lumber has always been one of the most volatile commodities, and market fluctuations are typical. The last 6 weeks, however has been a
surprise to almost everyone. Lumber prices have been on the rise since June of 2012, and housing has been slowly improving. Production however has also increased, and the supply chain has been built back up, as more companies start to put lumber in reloads, and some distributors [who have not been] are starting to stock commodity lumber again. Another big factor that has gone unnoticed is the amount of lumber that was exported overseas, that in now being left in North America. Now that the tax on the Softwood Lumber Agreement is at 0%, there is more lumber coming from Canada into the US. The buildup of inventory in the first quarter has put Supply and Demand out of balance. The additional shipment to the US will take a bit to clean up, and as prices retreat, we will test the 5% tax rate, encouraging more overseas sales. Meanwhile the price of logs and stumpage has also been increasing and by-products like chips have gone down, affecting producer’s profitability. These factors may lead to some sawmills considering some curtailment of production. With housing starts hovering around 850,000 (SAAR), it doesn’t take much additional inventory in the market place to oversupply the market. The economy is still fragile and producers are eager to stay profitable, if we don’t see a reduction in supply or supply shifted to other markets, prices will remain under pressure. Softwood Lumber Producers in North America have a difficult job, maximizing profits while maintaining the balance of supply. My guess is we will see this type volatile market again, before we see the “Super Cycle”.

May Lumber Market Analysis By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison's Lumber Reporter April 24, 2013 May 27, 2013 As the month of May plunged headlong into June, the great run-up of lumber prices through 1Q 2013 reversed in magnificent fashion. Not that prices returned to the lows both customers and producers became accustomed to in the past few years, far from it. However, the price drops of the past four weeks have effectively erased gains made at the beginning of this year. A spurt of oversupply is credited for falling prices, although capacity at most North American operations is still running below 90 per cent and production levels aren’t exactly breaking any records either. The mysterious rumblings out of customers in China is causing a lot of confusion: traders from that country quietly bought Canadian studs in April, from British Columbian producers, in enough volumes to drive the price right out of reach of traditional North American customers. That spike was, of course, not sustained. However benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr studs last week settled at US$335 mfbm, almost exactly where they were at the start of January. While these prices are currently lower than they were at this time last year, readers would do well to remember that the Sinclar Group’s Lakeland stud mill in Prince George, BC, exploded on April 23, 2012. That catastrophic event sent stud prices higher through the US building season last summer. Since that sudden large buy of studs in April, buyers in China have been largely absent in solid
wood commodity trading. Sawmills in BC especially are concerned about the disappearance of this important new-found customer, because the buying seasons in the US and in China are almost diametrically opposed. What will Canadian mills do this winter without sizable buying from China come November, when the US traditionally stops buying almost entirely? Producers and wholesalers reported to Madison’s that there were calls and inquiries from China last week but no sales were booked. The suspicion is that the recent price increases on a wide range of lumber and panel products was enough to send overseas customers looking for less expensive wood from other jurisdictions, specifically Europe. Meanwhile, DIY and remodelling season in the US routinely kicks off with the Memorial Day Holiday, and this year is expected to be no exception. Lumber retailers and box stores will likely be flooded with American homeowners looking for building materials to use on their properties. As well, the large US home builders have been carrying lean inventories indeed. In fact, after waffling up and down by $10 or $20 in the past couple of weeks, benchmark panel commodity OSB 7/16” Ontario actually gained $10 last week, to close at C$360 msf. Back in British Columbia, labour negotiations are currently underway between the United Steelworkers and employers for the next three-year contract. After preliminary discussions, the USW this week has chosen to work with Canfor to commence bargaining for the Interior Forest Industry. The union will work with Canfor to set a pattern bargaining agreement for all operations in the interior of the province. The next meeting between the employer and the union is set for June 12.
