In the Rear View Mirror

I went to BCMC 2012 in New Orleans as an attendee. The goal: talk to advertisers and catch up with friends. I came away from that show thinking it may be time to attend in San Antonio Thomas McAnally - Editor if the economy picked up. Fast forward to 2013 and you couldn’t believe the difference. Lots of equipment on display and the layout was open and inviting. Activity was brisk at every booth, including ours. The Riverwalk venue was great, the convention hall was great, and it felt like good times were here again. Man, I’m glad we had a booth this year! Interest in the Advertiser was high. We handed out over 200 magazines and talked to several advertisers about their 2014 plans. While most manufacturers had seen our magazine on line, they were surprised to see the BCMC issue in print, (only for the show). If you are wondering who the other guy was in our booth, his name is Don Coleman. A past division manager at Digital Equipment Corp and Hewlett Packard, Don is easy to talk to and brought a lot to the effort. Ask Stan Sias or Leonard Wasserman, Don is a fun guy who has those special people skills only possessed by seasoned marketing and sales professionals. He made the show even better than I had thought possible. Look for Don in our booth next year!

Gable End Wall Bracing

Adverti$er

November 1st, 2013 #06172 Page #7

By: Stan Sias, Simpson Strong-Tie National Manager, Plated Truss Industry

Does the gable end wall really get ‘braced’ by the ceiling diaphragm? We have all seen the details on construction contract documents, industry standard details, BCSI and other locations. The ceiling drywall is supposed to act as the diaphragm providing permanent bracing to the bottom chord of our trusses. Does that diaphragm extend to the exterior wall if there is no perimeter nailing? The question is…does that ceiling drywall REALLY act to support, restrain or brace the top of the exterior wall if there are no fasteners installed? What detail is common in your market? The Gypsum Association publishes many helpful literature pieces, from design manuals to marketing documents. Perhaps the one most widely used is GA-216-13, Application and Finishing of Gypsum Panel Products (affectionately known as the drywall hanger’s bible). This guide is often referenced in contract documents for the application of drywall finishes. One of the details that I see misused most often is the fastening of the drywall at the gable end wall.

Stan Sias - National Manager

Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie

This GA detail is the same whether the framing above the wall is parallel or perpendicular to the wall framing. Do you notice where first fastener is in regards to the inside face of the wall? Seven inches recommended distance (actually, not more than 7” if you read the associated text). The only way that a fastener can be placed at 7” is if has been the “Blocking as required” placed between the gable end and the first parallel truss adjacent to it. How often is the “Blocking as required” being replaced with a drywall backer (2x4 or 2x6) attached top of the gable end wall and run parallel to it? How often is that being in your market? How often is the first fastener actually out at the first What is supporting the top of the wall/bottom of the gable end frame “Blocking as required” isn’t there, the taped drywall joint? What then happens when there is wind pressure (either positive or negative) acting on the entire end wall? Is the drywall joint failure the fault of the manufacturer? Of course not, but will you need to fight to prove it? You

t h e is the there frame to the done truss? if the truss bet!

BCSI, the industry’s Building Component Safety Information, in Section B-3 Permanent Restraint/Bracing, addresses this very subject in Figure B3-33.

I don’t proclaim to know anything unique, however it is kind of spineMatt tinglingLayman, to hear the likesPubli of CNBC analysts and Alan Greenspan devote segments and books to the concept of human behaviors being responsible for market actions and reactions. I suspectWeek it is only a#22 matter of Monday short time beforeMa these same market analysts and observers put two and two together and come to the same inevitable conclusion that I did over twenty years ago. That is, the markets trade in predictable, repeating patterns because they are expressions of predictable, repeating human behaviors. Bull markets are an expression of euphoria, and bear markets are an expression of fear. This phenomenon is so because it has to be. Humans can only do what they imagine or have experienced. What we imagine is some variation of a past experience. Those small variations are what we refer to as “margins of error.” •In October we witness fear of winter, over-supply, and lower price in the form of consumer inventory liquidation. Meanwhile, jobsites continue operating at 110%. Weather remains favorable and dealers over-liquidate, insisting on a need-based price correction to buy. Additionally, Asia continues to contract, while still providing enough lumber volume to be a significant factor. •November is rally month. Buyers have holes to fill and become optimistic, even euphoric that the repeating seasonal up trend is at hand. •December is quiet, flat, as those same buyers begin to reduce inventory and year-end inventory taxes. Once deliveries can be secured for “after-the-first” the rally resumes. Production is the next consideration. Mills will assess 2013 sales against future housing demand to project 2014 output. This year’s price action confirms that current supply is sufficient to supply 1mm housing starts, however no more. 2014 Housing demand is expected to rise 3-5%. Production responds. That implies a stronger spring than last year and a more nervous lumber dealer sector when over-liquidated or under inventoried, like now.

Employees Retention & Productivity

A

by: Todd Drummond Todd Drummond Consulting

Lean manufacturing and productivity are all about the practice of team efforts. You cannot achieve high efficiency rates without excellent employee and management practices. A lot of companies claim to have very good employee practices, but too many deceive themselves. A common statement by employers is often, “We just cannot find the right employees to be dependable and work hard anymore.” But employees often have the following complaint: “We are treated like mushrooms in that we are kept in the dark and fed horse manure.” This is a very touchy subject for most companies and employees. In this article, I am going to be blunt and straight forward with my thoughts regarding this subject matter. I will impart to you what human-resources gurus take years of training to understand and disseminate to the masses. Let us start by understanding some basic truths of productivity.

Most production problems are caused by…

(Manufacturing and other areas of productivity) Total Output Issues – Poor retention of employees, there is always an employee shortage to fill all the positions needed for full production. Also, because of low employee retention, a company’s staff is often poorly trained and not skilled enough. Quality Issues – Normally caused by low employee retention, a company’s staff is often poorly trained and not skilled enough.

Industrial engineers are taught that most skilled positions take an average of three years of experience to reach full potential. Typically, a three-year-experienced worker is usually twice as productive as a new hire. Experienced workers not only produce more units per hour but also higher quality with fewer mistakes. So how can any department within your company reach maximum output if you have a high percentage of new employees with very little experience? The answer is simple, you cannot. Client statement: “Oh, but Todd, how difficult is it to cut lumber or assemble trusses?” Honestly, I hear this too often from clients. Let me give you an example to illustrate the hand-eye skills needed in the truss-manufacturing process. If I am working on my house, adding a new room or fixing the roof shingles, my wife will know this simply by seeing me at the end of the day. I do not have to say a word to her. Now why is this? It is simple, because at some point in the day I will have injured my hands in some way. That’s right, I will have smacked my finger or cut myself. I do not use my hands like this every day, so my hand-eye coordination is poor compared to any shop employee assembling trusses all day. Now, I consider myself a semi-intelligent individual who knows how to perform the different tasks involved in the truss-manufacturing facility. (I teach how to do this faster and better for a living!) But do you honestly believe that I, or maybe even you, would be as fast and as competent as your experienced truss assemblers? The same thing applies to your design staff. How much faster and of higher quality standards would your designers, who have years of experience, be compared to someone who barely knows the design software? You should know that it takes a long time just to be competent in using design software. If I cannot convince you that you need to retain competent personnel for the highest quality and efficiency output possible, than I truly pity your employees. By far and away the worst companies I have witnessed with the most problems are always the ones that cannot find and keep the “right” employees or hire enough employees. The “right” employee is a common client term, which simply refers to the inability to attract and retain highly skilled and dependable employees because their company’s employee practices are less than optimal (and I’m being kind in using the term “less than optimal”).

If you are a manufacture and you desire high efficiency with highquality products and good services for your customers, you know you need good employees to deliver this. You claim that employees are the most important part of your business. So it should not come as a shock to you that poor productivity and quality issues are caused by too few employees and also too many new employees in your group. How can your company possibly be at its most productive when they are constantly the entire article here: hiring and training new employees? I know what some of you are thinking Read http://todd-drummond.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Employees_Retention-and-Productivity.pdf at this very moment: “Oh Todd, we treat our employee very well, and it’s not the company’s practices causing these issues.” Please bear with me and keep reading. I know this is difficult for some of you, but if you

Updates on the solid wood market in Canada and the US provided by Keta Kosman, publisher and editor of Madison’s Lumber Reporter. Madison’s is a North American lumber and panel commodity price guide and market analysis newsletter, which has been published every Friday out of Vancouver, BC since 1952. For more information please visit http://www.madisonsreport.com

October Lumber Market Analysis By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison's Lumber Reporter October 30, 2013

The big news for North American lumber products this month was the announcement of two major sawmill closures in British Columbia, slated for spring of 2014. This news surprised nobody but shocked everybody, it seems. At least one would think so, judging from the reaction on the lumber futures trading board at the Chicago Merchantile Exchange. Lumber futures went up-limit ($10) in after-hours trading immediately following the announcement. Canfor Corp and West Fraser Inc made public plans to each close one sawmill in mountain pine beetle (MPB) affected affected areas of BC. However it is the tenure swap part of the agreement which is of most interest. In an effort to consolidate remaining timber supply, West Fraser has exchanged a portion of its existing timber harvesting tenure in the Morice Timber Supply Area (TSA) for Canfor’s tenures located in the Quesnel and Lakes TSAs. A few days after the companies’ notice, the BC government announced that the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will look carefully at the tenure swap to make sure it doesn’t adversely affect smaller operators in the area. The Competition Bureau will also be examining that deal, as it is legally required to do. Canfor will permanently close its modern sawmill located in Quesnel, BC, likely in March, 2014. For its part, West Fraser will close its flagship

mill in Houston, BC, in 2Q 2014, and embark on significant investments in two major mill upgrades in Smithers and 100 Mile House, BC. Otherwise, trading of North American lumber and panel commodities continued brisk. For the time being, the usual seasonal slowdown in solid wood sales has not materialized this year. Prices, of course, are responding accordingly. Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr sold for US$364 mfbm (net FOB mill) at the end of October, a $52 (or 14.3 per cent) improvement over this time last year and a $138, or almost 40 per cent, improvement over the end of October 2011. Revenue Canada announced last week, as expected, that wood prices have been high enough to allow the elimination of all export tax on western Canadian wood (from BC and Alberta) shipments to the US on November 1. Expectations are that this will be the case for the remaining duration of the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement. Disappointing news arrived toward the end of October from the United Steelworkers and IFLRA, the employers group, currently negotiating a new labour contract for sawmill workers in the BC’s southern interior. Apparently the two days of talks on October 22 and 23 were not enough to reach agreement. The two sides will next sit down together on November 6. There was another ominous sign on the labour front in October when talks between the Teamsters Union and CN Rail stalled. The sticking point seems to be safety issues. Most Canadian forest products companies are wholly served by either the CN or CP Rail, so any interruption in service from one of these carriers would certainly provide upheaval.
