The component manufacturing industry in North America has worked hard over the last fifty plus years to not let truss manufacturing slip into a commodity marketplace. Many component manufacturers (CMs) take great pride in their ability to manage their raw materials and their individual truss designs to take the greatest advantage of available strength (and costs) on which to base their design efficiency and optimization.

material is money and anything that they don’t have to buy and install, particularly up inside roof framing, is greatly appreciated. On the other hand, when a building designer says, “Here, bid this just as I have it designed with no revisions!,” the CM is relegated to simply a manufacturer for lowest price. There is no value to add and there is little profit with which to try and survive. Innovation is lost and sooner or later they lose interest and/or go broke.
The talents of the truss technicians and designers, especially when taking into account the desires of the building designer and the installation contractor, can turn a project into either a nightmare or a pleasant experience that assures continued business. Skilled truss technicians know their inventory and their manufacturing shops’ strengths and limitations, and work to maximize the efficiency of each. They know their industry design standards and the building code inside and out and put both to work in their efforts.
M o s t o f t o d a y ’s c o m p o n e n t manufacturers have worked hard to get to where they are today and are darned proud of it. Many have just come off the worst economic times of their careers and have no interest in working hard for no profit. The latest and greatest equipment and design software will simply sit idle without skilled truss technicians to provide the most economic solutions for the building designers and builders.
They also know that the job of the installer is made exponentially easier if they don’t have to buy and install extra lateral restraints and diagonal bracing. They communicate with the contractors and provide them with the least expensive solution to install, while meeting all the stated design criteria for the given project. The never-ending demand of increasing output while reducing cost affects every component manufacturer. Most of the time when we have to increase the output of a department, we think we have to hire more staff. What if you did not have to increase the staff for designers and salespeople while getting much more from them? What would this require and has it been done before? What would be the results? First, let us look at the results and ROI if you could do this. We have to define the results as something we can all agree would make a difference. Let us use a conservative time unit and say each designer and salesperson will be given an extra half hour per day, every day, to perform their task within the same 8-hour day they already work. This simply means every designer will have an extra ½ hour to create more designs and every salesperson will have an extra ½ hour to make more sales calls and not work more hours per day. What does this do for your company? 1.
Use existing staff – no extra salary, no new hire training and fewer mistakes using same personnel. For every people, ½ hour gain is equal to an extra 15 hours per week.

Gross margin returns calculations (0.5 hours ÷ 8 hours = 6.25% increase) Each Designer = $1 million/year sales at 30% gross margin at 6.25% increase = $18,750 in additional gross margin. E a c h S a l e s p e r s o n = $ 3 m i l l i o n / y e a r s a l e s a t 3 0 % g r o s s m a rg i n at 6.25% increase = $56,250 in additional gross margin. This means if your design department is the bottleneck of company, your company will gain $18,750 of gross margin for each designer. If the salespeople are the bottleneck, your company stands to gain $56,250 of gross margin per salesperson. (TOC – theory of constraints)

You get a labor cost savings by not having to hire more staff and you get more margin dollars produced.
Take a quick survey within your company and ask the following… Question 1: How often each day are you interrupted by phone calls from someone trying to find common need-to-know information for each project? How long does this phone call last? Question 2: How often each day are you interrupted by phone calls from someone wanting to know your schedule and time to complete or start their requested task? How long does this phone call last? Question 3: How often each day are the sale people calling someone in the company to find out the production and delivery schedule? How long does this phone call last? Question 4: How much time each day are you spending searching for needed information in the project folder, e-mails or notes because it is not at your fingertips? Question 5: How much time does the design and/or sales team spend each week reviewing current and upcoming projects to make sure everything is processed properly? In other words, making sure each step or task is being completed on time? Question 6: How much time do they spend doing something other than designing or selling? After you completed this quick survey of your groups, you are going to find they waste at least 2 hours every day. Are you thinking I am inflating my estimation of 2 hours per day? Ask yourself, how long does the average interrupting phone call, information search, or scheduler search take from each person’s time? The answer is 10 to 15 minutes. This means they only have to be interrupted 8 to 12 times per day with phone calls, searching for missing information, and searching schedules. Here is how to resolve this problem. Implement an all-in-one Internet-based communication, capacity scheduling, file storage, and project task management system. Link everything so that Continued on page 24

For most of April the winter bleahs continued as North American lumber and panel traders worked through ongoing severe transportation problems. Infrastructure delays and supply chain issues kept the business of buying and selling solid wood products muted. Frustration mounted, especially at the producer level, that the normal seasonal spring lumber buy has yet to materialize this year.

all projects have all the prints, notes, e-mails, change requests, assigned task records and scheduling for every department for quick access. Make sure this system has automated reminders and alerts of any pending or past due tasks so people do not have to waste their time looking for them. Make sure that each of the schedules is linked with user-defined dependencies to other schedules. Holding up a work order in the design phase affects production and delivery, and the schedules should reflect this. Make sure every schedule shows the capacity and loading of any group, person, and separate workstations. Have all the e-mails coming and going from your MS OutlookÂŽ automatically linked to the projects. And you do not want to forget that your customers should be able to communicate easily by letting them view and update their own W.O. information. Also, the user rights settings because you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want any unauthorized person looking at anything they should not. And because it is Internet-based, everyone can access everything about any project from any Internet browser-capable tablet, cell phone, or computer. There are other things to make sure you include in this all-inone Internet-based communication system. Make sure you are able to create your own user interface screens so it is drop-dead easy to use. An example would be the sales team having their own user input with default information, drop-down menus, and simple point-and-click options. Any required information on any of the screens should not allow the user to access the next menu. I have heard that some salespeople do not always take the time to fill in all the required information for every project. ;-) Where do you find an Internet-based communication system like this?
