Question of the Day By: Stan Sias

Structural Fascia ? Question of the day…The only way I can make my roof corner framing work is by specifying a ‘structural fascia’. How does this work anyway? What is this ‘structural fascia’ and how is it supported? What are the typical connections at each end? How are they executed?

Stan Sias - National Manager Whoa there! I think this qualifies as more Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie that one question, but being that they are all related, let’s take a stab at answering them. As seen in the second graphics, the connection at Structural fascia comes into play when: a) the first ‘stable end jack’ is typically a straight 90 there is only one bearing for truss, typically on a degree hanger. Many of these can have the outer corner jack of a hip set with a long overhang or flange turned-in to help get the hanger closer to cantilever; b) where the existing bearings are so the overhang edge. Hangers that connect with close together they can’t resist the overturning 10d common nails would have an end distance (unstable truss); or c) where the designer is (closest nail to the end of the member) of 1 1/2” trying to limit overhang deflection issues (see if we follow the NDS recommendation of those nails not being closer than 10 diameters from the graphic below). the end. This works out nicely to inset the beam by 1 ½” and then fill the gap with 2x blocking once the beam is installed.

The structural fascia is actually just another beam supporting a triangular load. The only tricky part is making the beam fit into the allotted space, and making sure that adequate connections can be made on either end. Often times, the beam needs to be moved in off the actual overhang edge to allow for hanger flanges and fastener end distance requirements. READ/SUBSCRIBE ONLINE AT WWW.COMPONENTADVERTISER.COM

T h e h a n g e r connection on the skewed hip member needs all the same considerations. If the hips are symmetrical (main roof and hip-end roof are the same pitch) the hanger would be a standard 45 degree. If the hips are different then we would be looking for a specific skew or fieldadjustable solution. Once again watch those hanger flange widths and be sure that the hanger will fit with adequate nail end distances. ~SS FAX: 800-524-4982

Continuous Improvement is a Cultural Thing If you are attending the BCMC show in Charlotte, NC, what is it you are hoping to find? Are you looking for new methods of improvement for manufacturing or design? Perhaps your goal is to make a decision on purchasing new equipment or establishing a new relationship with a vendor. If your goal is some type of improvement, then your intent may be considered continuous improvement and is the major tenant of lean manufacturing principles. The Japanese reference this idea of “good change” as kaizen. Most companies who embrace lean manufacturing practices simply refer to this as being continuous improvement. When I am performing my services as a consultant I explain and demonstrate all the lean principles, but continuous improvement comes from within a company’s culture. Continuous improvement can be summed up by viewing everything with 3 things in mind: Can you improve it by fine-tuning it, modifying it, or completely replacing it with something better? Nothing is off limits and it is a never-ending endeavor to seek improvement. Understanding and implementing this are two very different things. One must embrace change as something that is beneficial and worth the effort. Here are examples that I have witnessed in my consulting services, as well as the results. Failure example: Sometimes people within a company want to improve their company but they have no real power to do so. In other words, they do not have the management’s authority to actually implement what is discussed and demonstrated during the consultation. Thus all too often what ends up happening is a game of “protection of perceived power” within each group and also “failed leadership” from upper management. Change often requires responsibility shifts and a change of current practices. Because change requires effort and everyone is already tasked with a very busy workload, few want to give up their current practices, believing it is only the other departments that need to make any type of change. You can do your best to show how much the overall organization will benefit from the changes, but without buy-in from everyone and the backing of better management practices, it is a total waste of time. More often than not, these types of companies view a major equipment purchase as the one thing that will make all the difference. Typically the equipment purchase is biased toward their current vendor’s recommendation without knowing the true pros and cons of what might be a better fit for their needs. Once the new equipment is actually purchased and installed, all the other practices that need to be refined for the proper use of it are not properly thought through and therefor the new investment is only marginally helpful for their situation. I cannot tell you how many times I have witnessed expensive equipment being severally underutilized. An example of this is easy to see in a company’s production by generating a report on any of the automated saws and seeing what percentage of the shift it is actually making sawdust. Without a doubt, these types of organizations are the most difficult and disheartening to deal with. They typically have high employee turnover with positions constantly vacant, so their overall output suffers. Their cost of manufacturing is marginal at best. Also, they are always the ones with the poor net profit results. I often wonder how they remain in business. Successful example: Real positive change comes from the top down of the organization. Continuous improvement is part of the culture of the company and it starts with the CEO. The best companies I have witnessed implementing better practices do so by empowering and encouraging their employees to look for better methods on a daily basis. When I do my consultation it is so refreshing to present the material to a group who is eager to listen and challenge me. (Where do you think some of my best ideas come from?) Many ask me, “What is the single most important thing that will make a real positive difference to our organization?” I tell them first they must embrace the ideal of cultural continuous improvement and second comes New Website Offers Mobile Friendly Interface! everything else. Yes, refining the labor standards, pricing methods, The website includes a product explorer which will allow you to search and maybe purchasing new equipment might make big difference for them, but all the other things need to be done too. It is never just for specific equipment from the over 150 new & used products available. one thing, but many things that add up to making a real positive The listings will be comprehensive with great detail, many photos and an change. Typically, it takes most companies 6 to 12 months on their occasional video. Our goal is to provide the best resource in the industry for own without further assistance from me to implement all the things making profitable equipment selections for your company. we discuss in a consultation. That means it is a sustained effort on their behalf to constantly review and methodically implement all the desired changes they are going to implement. This is what is referred to as continuous improvement. Every company I have witnessed implement this type of cultural environment all have three common results: (1) low employee turnover, both in the shop and in the office, (2) lowest cost of manufacturing, lowest errors, and best quality, and then finally, (3) best net profits. If you are going the BCMC show, I do hope you find something that will help you become more successful. Maybe it is the small change you pick up from a seminar, or maybe it is a much bigger change such as a major equipment purchase or vendor change. Whatever it is that you are going to the show for, look for the potential change as an opportunity to make your life a little bit better. I hope to see you at the BCMC show this year! By Keta Kosman Publisher, Madison's Lumber Reporter September 22, 2014

After a very busy pre-Labour Day week of trading North American dimension lumber and panel products, sellers expected more business in September than actually happened. Disappointment reigned for producers as sales volumes were below expectations after an encouraging August end. Universal Trusses – Customer Study Universal Trusses Start of business: 1989 Time for investment: 2013 Country: Australia Reference: Arthur Potter, Owner Investment AutoEye Truss System a system for automatic production of roof trusses. Configuration: pucktable (17 m) with angle transfer and nailing bridge. What was the basis for the investment? “We made the investment for several reasons. We wanted to automate the production of trusses more, achieve higher quality and get the opportunity to build complex trusses. Also traditional equipment requires skilled and motivated workers and this is difficult to find. We had an issue with worker compensation insurance and this cost a lot of money so we wanted to avoid this in the future. The issue was caused by people walking up and down on a jig table 8 hours per day. The AutoEye is the future of building trusses, in the future all will build with this system no one will build with the old systems it is just a matter of time before they change.” In general what do you think about the system? “It works. We can build complex trusses easily. We now can control the production and control the labor. Before on the old systems we used when building complex trusses we did not know how long it would take. This could cause red projects or lock the production for an uncertain amount of time which could create late orders and angry customers. Now we know that a joint will be processed every 10-11 seconds, this gives control. We have significant lower production costs with this system combined with much lower education cost. Before it took approximately 6 months to get an operator skilled enough to produce trusses with the right quality and productivity level. Now they can do this from day 1, even I can build trusses. Also cost for labor control has reduced a lot. Today we run 2 shifts without problems the production manager does not need to be on site the quality level and productivity level is on the same top level anyway. Before it was impossible to work 2 shifts because it was very difficult to find skilled and motivated workers enough. Before many of the workers we hired were not motivated or skilled enough so we needed to sack them after a period of time which also created a lot of costs. Today the workers wants to work with this system, it is true!! We are not reliant to skilled workers.” What are the main benefits of the system? “High automation and output level combined with high consistent quality. Also the ability to control the labor cost through the project. Pucks + laser give a high quality level. C-presses can give good quality but you are reliant to the operators being skilled enough and you need to control the workers and constantly check that they actually run the c-press fast enough and are motivated to set-up the system in the correct way.”

ADVERTISMENT

What do you think about the service level from Randek and Bliss and Reels?? “It is good. The only issue is the time difference between Australia and Sweden for issues that needs to be solved from Sweden. We have not had any service problem. You can tell that the machine has been built really well, it is impressive.” How would you compare this system with traditional systems? “Arm jig (c-press system) – this system is reliant how fast the person actually walks around the system with the c-press so you need to control them. It takes several months to educate the staff which is costly and you invest a lot in the personnel. Also the set-up time is very demanding and the quality output is an issue. The quality is dependent on how accurate you set-up the system.” “Box-jig – It improves the output compared to c-presses but it is very limited what type of trusses you can actually build.” “Table press – A big issue is that you need to walk up and down on the tables the workers do not want to do this and it can create a lot of costs through worker compensation insurances. The quality is an issue; you need to slide the nail plates under the wood members which is difficult to do with high accuracy. The system is also dependent on the workers to hammer the corners of the nail plates correctly so they do not slide when entering the roller press.” “The Randek automatic truss production system solves all this!” What do you think about the AutoEye software? “It is easy to set-up the trusses and the offline planning is a good feature. The software is easy to learn. It works. The only feature we miss, that is under development, is higher flexibility to park the nailing bridge in different locations during the production.” How would you change the system if you were to invest today? “I would invest in more table units making the table longer giving us opportunity to have a double table system for more trusses, today it is only possible if we do 2 short trusses as the pucktable is in total 17 m long. We would not invest in the nailing bridge. We get a higher output when not using the bridge when producing low trusses in height and we do that often. For our type of production it only makes sense to use the nailing bridge when running a 2 table set-up which we rarely can due to limitation in length of pucktable we chose to invest in.”

Auto Eye Truss system Anyhing more you would like to add? “We are very pleased with the overall quality with the system.” Arthur Potter, Owner, Universal Trusses 52 Sheppard Street Hume ACT 2620 Australia http://www.universaltrusses.com.au/

The Future of Housing

The Future of Lumber Prices

NEW, custom-built single-family, homes are rare these days. Large tract and multifamily builders are providing the punch to this housing recovery and their choice of location is metropolitan areas and the suburbs. Why is that? That's where the jobs are and where new home buyers are moving. Cities and suburbs are where opportunity, entertainment, and education are best. Businesses are expanding towards major metros, creating new jobs, attracting the qualified employees and home buyers. It is a self-perpetuating evolution. This is truly an example of, "If you build it they will come." This scenario is creating long term growth shift away from rural communities with multigenerational family-owned businesses, like lumber yards and farms. Even more remarkable is the possible elimination of forest products as a primary construction material in only 1-2 decades. How? 3D PRINTING! Imagine a planet with more trees, oxygen, no O-Zone, no global warming. Abundance through exponential technological growth can eliminate poverty, hunger, and insufficient housing. The world IS a better place and continues to get better. Progress = change. Prepare.

The single most important thing to know about the lumber market is "when prices will change." Look at the chart below. Note the approaching week #44 and week #12 of 2015. The Forecasted Decision Points trend and 10-year average clearly projects that prices should be expected to work higher during that period. Now look at the previous same cycle. The trend was similar, yet not identical. Why? People tend to repeat most recent behaviors with slight modifications toward improvement, like diet and exercise. The Forecasted Decision Points formula considers past behavior and expectation of desire to improve future performance, thus creating a reliable forecast. In the next cycle beginning in October, housing expectations are more uncertain. Lumber supply is expected to increase. This will reduce transportation issues. These three components diminish buyers' fear, i.e., willingness and desire to accumulate, or build a speculative inventory. This behavior creates a scenario in which prices decline and buyers become over-liquidated. To get that strong up trend lumber prices need to fall by $50-100/mbft over by week #44, which is entirely possible. We are headed in the right direction at the right time. Looking Forward...ml

The number one cause of on-the-job injuries is physical overload.
