Why do you celebrate Independence Day As I sit and ponder the annual event of another Stan Sias - National Manager ‘Fourth of July’, I will once again stop and think about Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie all the sacrifices that have been made by brave men, women and children throughout our history in search of the single fundamental ideal: freedom. We live in a country where these ideals are taken so much for granted that many can no longer recall why, or indeed what we are celebrating on Independence Day. Are we celebrating the idea of yet another planned day off from work, school other tedious task? Are we celebrating the invention of fireworks? Are we celebrating that there is a ‘Sale!’ at every store in the shopping mall? Independence Day in the United States is often a time when flags are flown high, the Declaration of Independence is publicly read and politicians and others will make speeches about our founding fathers and the plight of the earliest Americans. Let us not forget that the fight continues, as it has for every generation since those brave colonists in New England decided back in 1775 to fight British rule over the Colonies. On July 2nd the following year, Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was first published two days later on July 4th and the first public reading wasn’t until four days after that. Delegates began to sign the Declaration on August 2, 1776. It wasn’t until almost a century later, 1870, that Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees, and not until 1941, that it became a paid holiday for them. I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend and at some point before during or after, you recite Pledge to the Flag and reflect on the true meaning of the Declaration of independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. After all the fireworks, hot dogs, beer and whatever, we are indeed “..one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

Peak Building Season Has Just Passed It was 4 PM this past Monday afternoon. I just took a stroll through a national developer's subdivision in my little town of Belmont, NC a suburb of Charlotte. The thermometer says 99, heat index 108. On one block there are ten homes under construction at various stages from footing to landscaping. There are a total of six workers on the sites and four in the trucks, all packed up for the day...and they have been for the last half hour. The workers say they arrive at the shop at 7AM, on the job by 8AM, finished by 3-3:30 with very frequent breaks for water and shade. This week it will take them three days to accomplish the same amount of work they could do in two days just three weeks ago. This is why week #25, last week, is historically the end of peak construction season. It is a function of productivity. In this heat, the capacity to exert mental and physical energy is greatly diminished. So, what is the effect on new home construction? Short-term heat induced pent up demand. Jobsites do not stop, they just slow to a crawl. Dealers have orders sold, ready to ship and will continue to buy as deliveries are made. And what about supply? Have you ever worked in the woods during the summer? It's worse than a construction site, requiring more clothing and it is more physically demanding. Expect weakened "hourly" productivity

"How can it be?" you ask. How can the lumber market remain bullish with summer's reduced productivity? The lumber market rises and falls in anticipation of inventory movement between producers and consumers. As buyers begin to realize the slower flow of lumber from the yard, the inclination is to stop buying, assuming an oversupplied condition. However, over the next two weeks of transition to summer builders will adjust; working longer days to recover "daily" productivity. While hourly productivity is reduced, daily productivity rises with longer work days increasing jobsite demand. By mid July, buyers will find they are not over supplied, rather under supplied and that sawmill production has not fully recovered from summer curtailments.

Bullish Trifecta Not only does summer heat take a toll on people power, but on equipment. Yard crews work slower and less efficiently, forklifts overheat, trucks need more maintenance. In July, expect less lumber production, longer jobsite workdays to increase productivity in July and transportation delays. Looking Forward...ml

How well do your department managers perform their given area of responsibility as a manager? What is all too common is that there exist department managers that are managers in name only because, even though they have the word “Manager” in their job description, they fail to execute the four basic disciplines of what management is all about. The only area that may be an exception to all four rules is the accounting department. But for all others, let’s see if they perform these four basic duties in your company’s given departments. 1 – Every department should have actual estimated and posted schedules for every project that it is processing. That is right: managers actually assign time estimations to and display the schedule for each and every project. (Print, design, batch, or however you define the work being done) Knowing when any project is going to be completed is critical information for any company. For example, a salesperson needs an estimate or a technical project request. Do all of your salespeople actually have a common, publicly displayed schedule with realistic time estimations from the tech department of when their work will be completed, or is the answer mostly, “about a week or so”? The correct answer should be an actual date. The technical group is no different from the manufacturing or subcontractors on a job site. All departments need to have estimated and scheduled work that is properly reserved by the department managers. 2 – Actually monitor how much work is being processed by each person or team within each department. It is not enough to know how much the department as a whole is performing. The department manager should have real, historical records of how each person or team is actually meeting expectations. How else does one know how efficiently the work is being done by any one person or team? Too often it is judged in accordance with how busy each person or team is during the work shifts. Staying busy is not an accurate measurement of how efficiently work is being completed. 3 – Each department should have actual written – and displayed – common department standards that everyone can clearly understand and follow. Too often the so-called “common standards” are word of mouth and everyone seems to have a slightly different idea of what they actually are. How effective a manager can one be if the measurement (standards) being used by the people in each department are not clearly defined, displayed and understood by all? And no, we are not referring to the company manual that is hidden in someone’s office. You should be able ask anyone in a group what the standards are for any common condition and they should be able to show the written and displayed standard. If they cannot show you, then they are spending too much time verbally explaining what they think the standards are and not precisely what the company defines them as. Or, worst case, common standards were never clearly defined in the first place. 4 – Each department needs to have its project processes clearly defined and they should be adhered to for their work processes. Too often individual people or teams have their own system for work order processing. Their work order processing was never clearly defined and, if it was at one time, it was not consistently followed. Work order processing goes hand in hand with scheduling, monitoring and adhering to standards. These four basic principles of good management practices allow for proper monitoring of work processing, efficiency, quality controls and adherence to defined company best practices. Without them, too many individuals or teams within various departments are wasting valuable company resources and these managers are failing their basic duties, which define them as managers. ~Todd Drummond
