Stan Sias - National Manager Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie I was asked recently why Component Manufacturers (CMs) do not provide the bracing details and holdowns for gable end frames like they do for the common trusses. The question got me thinking because the details are readily available, as are any mechanical connectors that might be needed to complete the specification and/or installation. I wondered if the installers simply gave up reading once they saw how to restrain and brace the commons. It also got me thinking about how often we see post storm wind event news coverage where the gable end frames have been blown off, or sucked off, the supporting exterior wall below, often at recorded wind speeds well below design wind loads. Why is this happening and what can we do to prevent it?

Let’s take a look at what is involved in specifying Gable End Frame connections and bracing and the resources readily available to assist you with this task. After all, it is the scene depicted in the two images below that we want to avoid before, during and after a wind event.

In designing a bracing system for a gable end wall application we need to look at two separate
no reproduction in whole and distinct functions. First, we need to brace the top of the gable wall itself as without it the gable or in part without permission wall is free to move in and out at will. In the completed structure, the gable end wall and gable from the component advertiser end frame above it will be subjected to loads (wind and seismic) both parallel and perpendicular their direction (see Figure B8-6 below).

When wind or seismic forces act upon the structure, it attempts to resist the sliding and overturning forces via the sheathing, connections, bearing walls and diaphragms.

The industry standard, Building Component Safety Information (BCSI), Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining & Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses provides guidance for bracing the joint between the wall and gable end frame. It is typically accomplished with lateral restraints and diagonal bracing in a means similar to the detail in BCSI‐B3, Figure B3‐35, shown below.
2006 Alpine PF90 AutoMark System •Wall Panel Plate Cutting & Marking Saw •Touch Screen Interface •Automated Length Stop & Ink Jet Printer as directed by Design Software Output •Cuts & Marks Both Top & Bottom Plates Simultaneously •24’ Infeed and 16’ Outfeed Table •10 HP Motor with 20” Blade •240 Volt / 3 Phase $29,500 FOB FL Wasserman & Associates 800-382-0329 www.wasserman-associates.com
1999 MiTek Cyber Saw Frame #094, fully automated five-blade component saw. Cutting performed by (2) 16” X 6 HP, (2) 20” X 6 HP and (1) 32” X 12.5 HP blades, with Dell PC upgrade featuring Windows XP and touch screen controls for fully automated part input, all powered movements, cuts 2x4 through 2x12” and 4x2”. Lengths cut from 15 inches (90/90) to 20 feet. Includes scrap conveyor (no incline). Recently inspected by OEM, currently not under power. 220 volt, 3 phase electrical. $26,890 FOB NY. Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com
The restraint and bracing detail above works to eliminate the failure mode depicted in Figure B3‐33 right. Be aware that the forces depicted in Fig. 32 & 33 could be acting in either direction, positive as shown or negative as a sucking force pulling the connection outward.

Secondly, and certainly no less important at least from an aesthetic perspective, we often need to brace the gable end frame studs themselves. It is very common for gable end frames delivered with roof trusses to have their studs oriented flatwise in the plane of the gable. The flatwise studs (vertical webs) are designed to transfer vertical loads only to (or from) the bearing structure below. Loads acting perpendicular to these studs must be resisted by vertical and/or horizontal reinforcement along with diagonal bracing to the roof or ceiling structural diaphragms. BCSI details individual web member reinforcement options in Section B3, Permanent Restraint/Bracing (in addition to the BCSI‐B3 Summary Sheet). Gable end frame stud reinforcement specification is the responsibility of the Truss Designer. This may be done on the Gable End Frame Truss Design Drawing (TDD) or on a supplemental detail. These details will always have the Design Assumptions specified, including: wind speed, duration factor, Building Exposure, Category and Maximum Mean roof Height, all as specified by the Building Designer. Truss Designers provide these standard details to the Building Designers to assist them in determining the bracing required to transfer the lateral loads into the targeted diaphragm(s).

The Standard Gable Bracing Details will have a table that shows the requirements for reinforcement or diagonal bracing based on the maximum stud length. These can vary from no requirements for relatively short studs to up to two sets of horizontal ‘L’ reinforcements with their associated diagonal braces per Section A‐A above.
The Building Designer may, in addition to the lateral restraint and diagonal bracing details, specify a structural connector between the gable end frame and the supporting wall/structure below. These could include a variety of connectors based on the desired intent and anticipated flow of loads. Some options include: LPT4 LPT5 RBC RBCP HGA10
Other details may include structural screws and/or metal straps. In lieu of project specific details for attaching and bracing gable end frames being provided by the Building Designer, Component Manufacturers would be well served to consistently provide the standard industry details referenced above as part of their jobsite submittal packages. I would be happy to review and discuss the content of your jobsite packages at your convenience. Thanks for reading, SKS The SAWS

Excellent Customer Service and Productive Equipment Provide a Decisive Advantage Outstanding customer service and the productivity and durability of Alpine Equipment have enabled Warman Truss to grow consistently since its founding 17 years ago. Managing Partner Roy Bedient focuses on optimizing plant efficiency through equipment innovations and effective preventive maintenance programs. Since its establishment in 1998, Warman Truss has relied on the productivity and reliability of Alpine equipment to help build a highly successful business. Located in Warman, Saskatchewan, Warman Truss serves all of Saskatchewan and Alberta. The company has also completed work in Manitoba and British Columbia. Warman Truss produces standard and custom-made truss systems and I-joists for residential, commercial and agricultural buildings, as well as a select group of retail dealers. The firm’s portfolio also includes several allied building and construction industry businesses. Managing Partner Roy Bedient oversees all aspects of the production process. He has watched Warman Truss grow steadily to its current size of about 90 employees. The plant typically operates two shifts, and production has increased every year, even during the downturn. “Our business model is straightforward – we focus on what we know and do well,” said Bedient. “Service is at the forefront, and we have maintained many of our core customers from the first day they started with us. I’m a firm believer that if you serve customers well, they won’t go anywhere else.” Bedient installed Alpine equipment when the plant opened and is one of Alpine’s most loyal customers. Warman Truss now has 10 pieces of Alpine equipment, and Bedient credits Alpine’s equipment and strong technical support for helping the business grow. “We are one of the province’s leading truss suppliers and take pride in our state-of-the-art cutting and assembly equipment and software,” pointed out Bedient. “Alpine has always been a great fit for us, and we like the fact the equipment is well made, user-friendly, easy to maintain and has reliable software. The company is very responsive whenever we need support.” In late 2014, Warman Truss installed the ALS 276 Motion Control Upgrade on its eight-year-old saw, and employees are pleased with the results. “The saw is now 10 to 15 percent quicker and has been running smoothly since the upgrade,” said Bedient. “The new drives helped as well. The saw usually runs at least 12 hours a day, and we anticipate the upgrade will extend its life by at least five years.” According to Bedient, the upgrade process itself took only about a day and a half. “We like the truss-by-truss cutting and optimize-by-cost features. We don’t do a lot of beveling, but it’s nice to know it’s there if we need it.” To keep its equipment running smoothly, Warman Truss follows a rigorous preventive maintenance program, which is reviewed and updated regularly. “Our philosophy is to address issues and fix them right away before they become bigger problems,” he emphasized. “We have a simple maintenance program stressing cleanliness throughout the plant and make sure our equipment is as clean as possible. We also follow the maintenance recommendations in Alpine’s equipment manuals.” To further enhance plant productivity, Warman Truss installed Alpine’s eShop software about a year ago. “The program has increased our assembly and cutting productivity by about 30 percent,” noted Bedient. “The software has greatly enhanced our overall efficiency and enabled us to optimize our staffing levels.” PHONE: 800-289-5627

Testimonials of Consultation Services at http://todd-drummond.com/todds-profile/
To: Whom it May Concern From: Dan West Re: Todd Drummond Consulting I have been intimately involved in every facet of the truss business. This gives me a unique ability to understand how different areas of the business should intertwine to get things done. I have been involved in creating and running top performing businesses for decades. My aphorism: No matter how good you are, there is someone else doing it better! You need to constantly be on the lookout for the better option and adapt to make it your own. One of my goals has been to learn more about “lean manufacturing” and how I could adapt it to my operation. Of course, like all business owners, I have never had the time to do this. Enter Todd Drummond, I have known Todd for years and have watched as he slowly grew his consulting business into a major player in our industry. Todd has a luxury that very few people have. He has not only been in dozens of truss plants, he has had the opportunity to watch, listen and learn in every one of them. This is invaluable in itself and something a business owner would never have the time to do. The other side of the coin is, Todd has extensively studied Lean Manufacturing and been very progressive about understanding how best to implement lean principles in a component operation. I hired Todd’s services in 2013. His process was all encompassing and included almost every aspect of the business. He did a great job covering every aspect of the process, while using lean principles as the foundation. I was pleased with everything. Todd went over best practices and lean principles related to our location. He gave us some great advice and input. One of the most powerful things was the power point presentation Todd left with us. This is invaluable when trying to work with and train your people. When we are ready to upgrade a part of our business, we refer to the TDC presentation to help keep us on track and make sure we are always thinking lean! Todd has watched and done time studies on almost every piece of equipment in our industry. To have that as a resource is worth the price of admission, in and of itself. When it comes to investing in new equipment, Todd’s suggestions have been very astute. His recommendations and suggestions have definitely made a positive impact on our company and our bottom line. Whether you’re a successful business looking for more, a struggling business that needs some guidance, or a business somewhere in between, I highly recommend Todd Drummond Consulting LLC to help you along the way. Sincerely,
Dan West - Owner & Managing Member - Snake River Truss & Components LLC

People say “I don’t have enough time” all too often. This seems to be Todd Drummond especially true of the home building industry where there never seems to Todd Drummond Consulting www.todd-drummond.com be enough skilled workers to satisfy the demand. If your group is always talking about needing more people, equipment, and time, then it would certainly benefit by improving time management. Improving time management allows everyone to accomplish more with the existing resources, which certainly will have a positive effect on net profits. Stephen Covey, the guru of effective time management, once created a simple matrix that has stood the test of time. By dividing a common task that is urgent and important into four groups (see matrix), one can begin to understand some common-sense truths about time management. Too often, we are spending too much time in the quadrant of necessity (1) because we neglect the quadrant of quality and improvement (2). Quadrants deception and waste (3 and 4) should be self-explanatory. Neither group is important, and they both are characteristics of self-discipline that define an individual’s work ethics and drive.

The Quadrant of necessity (1) is what too many of us are focused on. The more our time is consumed by crises, pressing problems, firefighting, reworks, and all the “MUST BE DONE NOW” issues, the more things get out of hand. How does one reduce this stress and find more time? The old axiom of “work smarter not harder” is a term that is often stated but seldom implemented. But that old axiom is the key for many of us to become more productive and effective with our time. Essentially, we will have more time by reducing mistakes, producing more with greater skill and speed, and creating system processes that do not need our constant supervision. Take a quick survey within your group about the following issues. Regardless of any formal education, how many have or are actively pursuing greater knowledge for anything related to better management practices, system processes, and skill development? Does your company actually support training and development, or are such issues not addressed? What kind of returns could a company expect with an active training program? Calculating training time versus return: •
Assume 10 hours training per employee;
•
10 employees = 100 hours of training;
•
Assume only 1% gain in productivity;
• ~2,000 Hours/employee/year * 1% gain * 10 employees = 200 hours gained versus the 100 of training
•
Every 1% gain is an extra 200 hours for the same 100 hours spent (2% = 400, 3% = 600…); and
•
Depending on the department and task, most case studies state that there is an average gain of 5% to 25% in productivity directly related to training programs. Improve Profit With Better Time Management Practices continues page #40

The Bluff Has Been Called, Momentum on the Wane
For the last several decades we have abused the phrase "multi-tasking". Equally as long, perhaps even longer, multi-talenting has been around. Multi-talenting, likely a term you have never heard because I just made it up, can be evidenced primarily on a drive through the country. This is where living off of the land or living off of people who live off the land is how folks generate income. Farms are common, country churches frequent the landscape, the random country store can be found every few miles, a farm supply is a must, and an old fashioned genuine full service, service station is a staple. Also equally as necessary to these nonmetro communities are multi-talented entrepreneurs. These enterprises start out with something like a small engine repair that generates a trickle of year round business. During hunting season, the talent of taxidermy provides a little extra holiday money. Having to make things last, there is always a neighbor in need of upholstery. And every March and April tax season can be quite lucrative. So on the next drive through the country note how very common it is to see a sign in the front yard that reads, "Small Engine Repair, Taxidermy, Upholstery, Tax Returns." That is America. ...ML
Two weeks ago our lumber market began to feel the effects of production curtailments. Strength in pricing and increased order flow to the mills was almost instantaneous. That first round of revived energy was only the warm up. It was a sampling of what a bull market would look and feel like if/when over all lumber production were to be reduced by some 20%. An over reaction by the futures markets with a one-week $25 rally, spooked buyers and lifted cash prices before mills could secure the coveted solid two-week order file. With no additional production curtailments being added since that first flurry, the futures market has given back its gains over the last ten days. Mills' sales have stalled, buyers have resumed inventory liquidation and prices are once again negotiable. In last Sunday's Lumber Market BRIEFING the strategy was to "call the bluff". Give this market some space and time to encourage more production curtailments. The FDP projected low is at week #42 with upside momentum anticipated to accelerate beginning week #43. That is the target for the beginning of the next bull market. Transition to bull market buying and selling strategies will be our focus over the next couple of weeks. Looking Forward...ML!

¥Weather: Now this is some nice weather, isn't it? Partially over cast, 75 degrees with a light breeze...perfect for setting trusses, banging nails, and building decks. This is catch up and get ahead time. ¥Price Summary: (2x4#2 SPF-W basis.) This market is typical of lumber buyer mentality. When mill prices are $300, everyone is a strong buyer at $250. At $250 they are less willing because the market is weak. At $200 the number becomes too good to refuse. ¥6x10 Historical Evaluation: Current prices are more in line with 10-year historical values, yet still deeply discounted to last year's values. The next six weeks still lean towards the bearish side, though that the down trend has lost significant momentum over the last four weeks. ¥Curtailments: Follow through curtailments have stalled, weakening buyer resolve. Weaker prices will reignite mill willingness to cut back. ¥Sales / Production Ratio: Well there you go. Last week's 2-week wood is now ready. 3-week offerings have evaporated. Mill order files are thinning again. ¥Housing: Existing home sales softened in August as we expected while shoppers wrapped up vacations and prepared for back-to-school. Housing starts also slipped as expected with summer's heat reducing productivity. Permits improved as a leading indicator that weather would improve and summer back logs would catch up. Look for October housing stats to improve as a function of weather. ¥Forecast: As the next FDP reversal low draws closer, we see that week's #41/42 put in the bottom with upside acceleration beginning the third week of October, week #43. ¥Strategy: Begin scale-in buying over the next 2 weeks with late week purchases until we see additional production curtailments.

New Contract Lows We have seen $70 in volatility over the past three weeks...up $30 and down $40 (-$25 over the past week)...not a game for sissies. Since January my long term objective for this bear market once it broke below $300 was $210. That projection was based upon the previous lows seen on the chart and a parallel trend line off of the lower highs across the top. Now that we are in the "zone" there is another trend line, blue, that projects a slightly higher support at $215-ish. Today we traded $216.50. The parallel trend line now projects a move down to $200. The November contract has an 87%, five-year correlation (2008:85% 2007:87% 1985:88% 1982:86% 1981:86%) that suggests waiting out $210...with a shot at $200...or lower.

Improve Profit With Better Time Management Practices from page #29
A perfect example is training and the implementation of lean manufacturing practices. Implementation of lean manufacturing gives everyone more time! Common results across numerous case studies for effective lean manufacturing implementation are as follows: √
Increased overall productivity;
√
Quality improvement while having lower re-works;
√
Shorter lead time for scheduling;
√
Lower overall cost while improving net margins; and
√ Higher net profits for companies implementing an ongoing lean manufacturing practice compared to those who do not, according to every case study published on this topic. If your company wants to improve net profit by improving time management, then more time should be spent doing more of the task in quadrant of quality and improvement (2). Taking the time that always seems to be in too short of supply takes a concerted effort and active support by the entire management team. Failure is almost certain if it is delegated to a department head without an active participation of the entire management team. It has to be more than just talked about; everyone must be playing a role. Once this is done, more time will avail itself, and net profits will improve. A final word of caution about embracing and trying to implement lean manufacturing: Like any new idea, there is a normal surge of enthusiasm in the initial stage. However, once the hard task of actual implementation starts, it can easily falter. There are numerous reasons for this, but primarily knowing the lean terminology and actually applying it are two very different things. I have been refining my understanding, training, and implementation of lean manufacturing for the past 12+ years as a full-time lean consultant. Lean manufacturing is not one thing, such as the 5 “S” rules, but many things. It is like a big tool box with many different tools for different situations. I cannot state this enough: save your company a great deal of time and money by getting professional help with the training and effective implementation of lean manufacturing from someone like me who understands the home building industry. It is well worth it. ~ Todd...
