chain, infrastructure, and leadership positions to include five commands and over thirteen years as a general officer. During his last active duty assignment (2009-2013), he served as the Chief of the Marine Corps Staff in Washington, DC. Williams retired from active Marine Corps service in 2013 and now he and his wife of 42 years make their home in a suburb of Huntsville, AL, where he serves as a consultant for a number of for-profit and nonprofit organizations, including that of our BCMC Build partner, Operation FINALLY HOME. For many of us, BCMC is a delightful reunion and business opportunity as the industry education conference and tradeshow brings the industries finest to one location for the better part of a week. Old friendships are renewed and new relationships are born. Suppliers from across the industry spectrum gather to exhibit their finest offerings and forge new opportunities. Speaking with those suppliers, all were happy to see the numbers increasing, though a common thread was that BCMC needs to find a better way to keep attendees on the show floor. To steal a line from one of the well attended education sessions, there is always room for continued improvement! If you were not in Milwaukee, you’ve missed out for this year, but fear not. 2016 promises a bigger and better BCMC, this time in the Volunteer State and The Marble City, Knoxville, TN. We hope to see you there! Thanks for reading, SS. SAWS

Product Manuals Enhance Plant Safety and Output By Scott Adinolfi, Marketing Specialist, Alpine

P

roduct manuals are an essential aid in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting production equipment safely. Besides being trained in properly using the equipment, operators should also review the accompanying manual before working on any machine. This will help ensure safe and productive operation of the equipment. Another benefit of any product manual is that it gives maintenance personnel a wealth of information they can use to minimize downtime and maximize production efficiency. Each manual provides a maintenance schedule and instructions for servicing the machine. Alpine’s manuals also incorporate visual aids to highlight not only how, but when and where, to perform preventive maintenance on the equipment.

Manual Contents All Alpine product manuals include: • Safety reminders • Parts list • Equipment specifications • System overview • Detailed operating instructions

• Maintenance procedures • Troubleshooting tips Every manual begins with a safety page describing the machine’s potential hazards. Safety cautions are also highlighted throughout the manuals to promote awareness and help facilitate safe equipment operation. Maintenance personnel will feel more at ease when servicing Alpine equipment, as our safety instructions are detailed in tandem with the maintenance steps. Each manual also contains a section describing how to diagnose and resolve issues to get equipment back up and operating as quickly as possible. While machines can break down, fixing them quickly is essential in maintaining production output. Alpine’s manuals include a list of common wear parts to simplify the parts ordering process and ensure that replacement parts are delivered in a timely manner. A list of recommended items that customers should keep onsite is also included. These typically are either common replacement parts or long-lead-time assemblies. Maintaining a sufficient stock of these components will help keep your equipment operating and reduce the risk of prolonged downtime.

Redesigned Manuals In recent months, the Alpine Equipment team has spent considerable time and effort enhancing both the content and layout of Alpine’s Equipment product manuals. The newest manuals cover the ALS 4.0 linear saw, AutoMill HP component saw and AutoSet C4 automated table system. We are confident that customers will find our manuals to be a valuable resource for training new equipment operators, as well as enhancing the knowledge of current operators. Alpine‘s manuals are now available in English, Spanish (Mexican) and French (Canadian). To obtain copies of these manuals, call Alpine Customer Service at (800) 521- 9790. Reducing the learning curve for operators and increasing the maintenance staff’s skills will continue to help provide a safer and more productive working environment in the plant. n Scott Adinolfi joined Alpine in 2014 and is responsible for managing a variety of equipment marketing and engineering projects. He is based in the Vernon Hills, Illinois, office.

SAFETY TIP The Lockout/Tagout process prevents the unexpected startup of a machine and the potential for serious injury. The process is mandatory before starting work on any piece of equipment. Remember to isolate all types of energy, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and gravity. After completing the Lockout/Tagout process, be sure to verify the dissipation of all energy. Free copies of Alpine’s Equipment Safety Precautions guide are available by calling Alpine Customer Service at (800) 521-9790.

Testimonials of Consultation Services at http://todd-drummond.com/todds-profile/

To: Whom it May Concern From: Dan West Re: Todd Drummond Consulting I have been intimately involved in every facet of the truss business. This gives me a unique ability to understand how different areas of the business should intertwine to get things done. I have been involved in creating and running top performing businesses for decades. My aphorism: No matter how good you are, there is someone else doing it better! You need to constantly be on the lookout for the better option and adapt to make it your own. One of my goals has been to learn more about “lean manufacturing” and how I could adapt it to my operation. Of course, like all business owners, I have never had the time to do this. Enter Todd Drummond, I have known Todd for years and have watched as he slowly grew his consulting business into a major player in our industry. Todd has a luxury that very few people have. He has not only been in dozens of truss plants, he has had the opportunity to watch, listen and learn in every one of them. This is invaluable in itself and something a business owner would never have the time to do. The other side of the coin is, Todd has extensively studied Lean Manufacturing and been very progressive about understanding how best to implement lean principles in a component operation. I hired Todd’s services in 2013. His process was all encompassing and included almost every aspect of the business. He did a great job covering every aspect of the process, while using lean principles as the foundation. I was pleased with everything. Todd went over best practices and lean principles related to our location. He gave us some great advice and input. One of the most powerful things was the power point presentation Todd left with us. This is invaluable when trying to work with and train your people. When we are ready to upgrade a part of our business, we refer to the TDC presentation to help keep us on track and make sure we are always thinking lean! Todd has watched and done time studies on almost every piece of equipment in our industry. To have that as a resource is worth the price of admission, in and of itself. When it comes to investing in new equipment, Todd’s suggestions have been very astute. His recommendations and suggestions have definitely made a positive impact on our company and our bottom line. Whether you’re a successful business looking for more, a struggling business that needs some guidance, or a business somewhere in between, I highly recommend Todd Drummond Consulting LLC to help you along the way. Sincerely,

Dan West - Owner & Managing Member - Snake River Truss & Components LLC

If you attended the BCMC show in Milwaukee WI, what was it that you were hoping to find? If your goal was some type of improvement, Todd Drummond Todd Drummond Consulting then your intent may be considered continuous improvement and is the www.todd-drummond.com major tenant of lean manufacturing principles. The Japanese reference this idea of “good change” as kaizen. Most companies who embrace lean manufacturing practices simply refer to this as being continuous improvement. Continuous improvement must come from within a company’s culture; otherwise the lean manufacturing initiative will fail. Continuous improvement can be summed up by viewing everything with 3 things in mind: Can you improve it by fine-tuning it, modifying it, or completely replacing it with something better? Nothing is off limits and it is a never-ending endeavor to seek improvement. Understanding and implementing this are two very different things. One must embrace change as something that is beneficial and worth the effort. Failure example: Sometimes people within a company want to improve their given area of responsibility but they have no real power to do so. In other words, they do not have the management’s authority to actually implement the needed change. Thus all too often what ends up happening is a game of “protection of perceived power” within each group and also “failed leadership” from upper management. Change often requires responsibility shifts and a change of current practices. Because change requires effort and everyone is already tasked with a very busy workload, few want to give up their current practices, believing it is only the other departments that need to make any type of change. You can do your best to show how much the overall organization will benefit from the changes, but without buy-in from everyone and the backing of better management practices, it is a total waste of time. More often than not, these types of companies view a major equipment purchase as the one thing that will make all the difference. Typically the equipment purchase is biased toward their current vendor’s recommendation without knowing the true pros and cons of what might be a better fit for their needs. Too often, once the new equipment is actually purchased and installed, all the other practices that need to be refined for the proper use of it are not properly thought through and therefor the new investment is only marginally helpful for their situation. I cannot tell you how many times I have witnessed expensive equipment being severally under utilized. Without a doubt, these types of organizations are the most difficult and disheartening to deal with. They typically have high employee turnover with positions constantly vacant, so their overall output suffers. Their cost of manufacturing is marginal at best. Also, they are always the ones with the poor net profit results. I often wonder how they remain in business. Successful example: Real positive change comes from the top down of the organization. Continuous improvement has to be part of the culture of the company and it starts with the CEO. The best companies I have witnessed implementing better practices do so by empowering and encouraging their employees to look for better methods on a daily basis. Many ask me, “What is the single most important thing that will make a real positive difference to our organization?” I tell them first they must embrace the ideal of cultural continuous improvement and second comes everything else. Yes, refining the labor standards, pricing methods, and maybe purchasing new equipment might make big difference for them, but all the other things need to be done too. It is never just one thing, but many things that add up to making a real positive change. It must be a sustained effort on their behalf to constantly review and methodically implement all the desired changes they are going to implement. This is what is referred to as continuous improvement. Every company I have witnessed implement this type of cultural environment all have three common results: (1) low employee turnover, both in the shop and in the office, (2) lowest cost of manufacturing, lowest errors, and best quality, and then finally, (3) best net profits. ~Todd Read/Subscribe online at www.componentadvertiser.com

Market Strides

Thought Provoking and Inspirational

Sales Speak The art of successful selling is knowing how people listen and what they are listening for. Most commonly, folks listen for an opportunity to speak about themselves or express their thoughts and opinions. People want to be heard and believe that others care about them. Actively engaged listeners are searching to discover something that is in their own personal interest which they can benefit from. For example, why do people listen to gossip? Of course, they are on the hunt for something they can repeat which will gain them the favor of others... something to satisfy a physical or emotional need. A good sales person will constantly load a listener's ears and mind with information that is not only perceived, yet actually IS, in their personal best interest. Sales experts will suggest solutions that create better health, more fulfilling relationships, financial improvement... make another feel important. To be heard, one must deliver information with intention, clarity, and conviction. When listeners perceive no personal gain from the conversation they disengage. They don't respond. Sales speak is not about a product or service. It's about the listener. ML

Last week we suggested this week would bring continued upward direction with loss of momentum, resulting in modestly higher prices this week while buyers digested recent purchases. That was the next market stride. Imagine the lumber market out for a jog. It begins in a forward direction at a warm up pace then once loosened up, accelerates, gaining forward momentum. This forward, accelerated momentum easily carries it up the hill. Midway through the climb, its legs and lungs get tired. It slows to recover. Still moving forward and higher, though at a slower pace. That is this week's stride...slowly forward and higher. The upward climb is not yet complete, nor is the breath-catching recovery. Next week we will find a flat stretch which will aid in strengthening the market's legs and lungs for the next push higher. The FDP trend below forecasts our lumber market's strides; alternating sprinting and coasting. ***Days are getting shorter. This Saturday we lose an hour of daylight. Less jobsite and sawmill productivity are expected. Not one...both. It is a supply / demand wash. !Looking Forward...ML"
