Question of the Day

April 1st, 2016 #09201 Page #4

FLBOA 2016 Education Conference Stan Sias

Question: Do Building Officials really want education on the trusses we produce? On Monday, March 14, I had the honor and privilege of presenting to a group of Building Officials (BOs) and Building Designers (BDs) [over 350 individuals live and in-person!] at the Finger Lakes Building Officials Association (FLBOA) 2016 Education Conference at the RIT Inn & Conference Center in Henrietta, NY just outside Rochester. To make this experience even better, I was able to team with the esteemed Professor (Ret.) Frank Woeste of VA Tech to address this tremendous group with a presentation on Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Design Responsibilities and Permanent Bracing.

Over 350 attendees listen to a presenter from the NY Department of State, Division of Building Standards and Codes at the FLBOA 2016 Education Conference in Henrietta, NY. The invitation to speak, which arrived late last year, asked for a presentation on truss permanent bracing. My initial reaction was two-fold: first, why the sudden interest in Permanent Bracing, and second, what version of the building code were they using. Asking these questions, it came to light that they were currently working under the NY State version of the 2006 I-Codes and secondly, with recent winters of near record snow falls, the need for accurate placement of permanent lateral restraint and diagonal bracing had been exposed. Discussions with Dr. Woeste and the conference organizers quickly confirmed my long-held assumption that no discussion on wood truss restraint and bracing should proceed without first laying the groundwork of the division of design responsibilities assumed in the application of metal-plate connected wood trusses in the construction environment. For most BOs and a vast majority of BDs, they are surprised the first time they read the second chapter of the document they specify when utilizing wood trusses. By simply specifying compliance to some version of the IBC/IRC, they are by reference also specifying some version of ANSI/TPI 1, the industry design standard which we have discussed at length in this column previously. In the case of my friends up in NY, they are in the process of moving from references to TPI 1 – 2002 to the most recent edition, ANSI/TPI 1 – 2014, which is referenced in the 2015 I-Codes currently under consideration. Chapter Two of TPI 1 deals with Design Responsibilities. This was the perfect tie for the creation of our two-hour presentation for FLBOA. We started the presentation with a brief history of trusses (no, they are not new construction) and went on to discuss codes and references (not only TPI 1 but also NDS, ASCE and others) and, like the building codes themselves, the fact that the TPI 1 truss design standard had been under periodic review and updating since its inaugural publication in 1960. Moving on to Design Responsibilities, we briefly reviewed the division of tasks assigned to each party involved in the process and highlighted the importance noted within both the codes and the Standard (see below) of the need for lateral restraint and diagonal bracing to be installed (and the special conditions applying to trusses 60’ long and greater) to satisfy the design assumptions being made by the Truss Design Engineer in sealing the Truss Design Drawing submittals.

IBC References TPI 1 References

TPI 1 references to Perm. Member Restraint/Bracing of the Truss System and BCSI for standard details. After making the link to the industry standard details contained within the BCSI, Building Component Safety Information, Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining & Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, we started a step-by-step process of reviewing the BCSI Book handouts which were graciously sponsored by Simpson Strong-Tie and the SBCA– NY Chapter (a NY Chapter Membership list was provided to all attendees too). Concentrating on Chapter Three, Permanent Bracing, we reviewed the three separate and distinct planes needing attention (top chord, web and bottom chord planes) and typical materials and installation. We touched on top chord and bottom chord fillers and piggyback trusses assuring that the ‘real’ compression members were being addressed. We ended with posting website addresses for both SBCA and TPI for more information and provided links to the non-printing versions of BCSI and TPI 1– 2014. The presentation was a huge success based on comments made immediately after and by questions raised later that day and the next. Attendees were extremely grateful for receiving the printed copies of the BCSI Books. Leftover books were donated to the FLBOA for an upcoming contractor event they have scheduled, which was also most appreciated. To answer today’s question – “Do Building Officials really want education on the trusses we produce?” – I can tell you that they sure did appreciate this one and would love to have a plant tour and learn even more. 200 Issues and Counting Last month, The Advertiser hit a milestone – its 200th issue! To recognize that achievement, let’s take a quick look back at how this magazine has evolved from its humble beginnings. Anna L. Stamm

8 Years Ago and 8 Pages

Director of Communications and Marketing Component Manufacturing Advertiser.

When The Advertiser was launched in the fall of 2008, it was 8 pages long, and it was designed to be sent in the actual mail too. Sure, we had PDFs back then, but the predominance of e-mails, e-magazines, and e-delivery of everything did not have the hold on us that it does today. The Advertiser featured what made it a success – advertising! Designed primarily like the classified section of a newspaper, the magazine offered a convenient place to run equipment ads, among other things. As a weekly magazine, the turn-around time was fast – materials received by noon on Tuesday would be included in that week’s issue released on Friday.

1997 ASI B500 Component Saw 1997 ASI B500, 5-blade component saw, features semi-automatic user interface with backup mechanical indicators, grouped functions such as automatic blade alignment for chords or webs, automatic centerline adjustment of nominal board size, safety fencing, shaker pan scrap system, digital read outs and push-button adjustment controls. 480 volt, 3 phase. $19,890 FOB ON Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com

Bigger and Better By 50, 100, and 150 Just over 1 year later and passing issue #50 in early 2010, The Advertiser was still a weekly publication, but it had grown substantially. Instead of 8 pages, the magazine was 28 pages, and it was chock full of ads in all shapes and sizes. Adding another year to that, issue #100 appeared in spring 2011 and still had the classic newsletter look, focusing on those classified and full color ads. By issue #150, the look of the current magazine had arrived. A full-page cover photo welcomed readers to the issue, and news updates or an article were appearing on page 3. The Safety First series had begun – continuing today, this series was designed so that managers can conduct their monthly safety review with the convenient article written in both English and Spanish. The page count had increased a little too, with issue #150 reaching 31 pages.

Going Monthly and Growing The last weekly issue of The Advertiser was released in September 2012. Thanks to our loyal readership asking for more, however, the magazine relaunched in January 2013 in its current monthly format. Still committed to featuring its valued advertisers, the magazine continued to average 30 pages per issue. In the coming months, however, more articles trickled in, and more information was highlighted in addition to those ads.

1997 Timbermill 620 Pro SSD Timbermill 620 Pro single-sided digital, model 6-20 Pro SSD. Six heads cuts lumber from 2x3 through 2x12, 4x2 lengths from 13” to 20’ including four-angle floor truss webs from 19". "Pro" model features faster angulation movements and faster carriage speeds with soft-start technology and powered movements with single-side setup and digital readouts. Includes set of spare blades, drag-chain waste conveyor with incline, and all available spare parts. 480V 3ph. $25,990 FOB IA Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com

Now 3 years later, the March 2016 issue was 56 pages long including all of those ads that our readers want, an industry calendar, and 12 articles. What a great way to reach our milestone 200th issue!

Moving Forward with The Advertiser A lot has changed since this magazine began 8 years ago, both in these pages and in our industry. But we’re looking forward to bringing you even more great ads, articles, and updates in the months to come. Please let us know what else YOU would like to see in our pages. Got an idea for an article? Want to ask a question or discuss an issue? Have a product or service that you’d like to advertise? Simply tell us what you’d like to see or like to provide. The Component Manufacturing Advertiser is an open forum for news and updates – thank YOU for reading and contributing! PHONE: 800-289-5627

Good Humans This is the continuing recollection of the good people I have crossed paths with over the years, but may remain unknown to most folks in the industry. Keep in mind, I may have a bit of a romanticized perspective….. could be due to adult beverages at the time of our last meeting. Don Hershey – Mr. Hershey was one of those guys who was on board in this industry very early on. He built a business in Chicago that was the envy of many suppliers in the area. He dominated his market and made himself the indispensable commodity in every transaction. He created a place in which his sons, Ben and Keith, cut their teeth on the industry. Mr. Hershey was a leader when the industry needed strong leadership. He succeeded no matter what issue was thrown his way. After adding operations in Arizona, Mr. Hershey began building another terrific business and legacy. He was one of the pioneers in very specific areas of component design, testing and manufacturing. Mr. Hershey was instrumental in the development and testing of the purlin truss. His ideas still live on in the Southwest. He became such a force in some commercial markets that his nearest competitor was nearly a thousand miles away. His unique specification gave him almost unbridled control over certain types of construction. He was a larger than life proponent of everything truss related. Mr. Hershey noticed that there was an abundance of under utilized Ponderosa Pine and opened a Glu-Lam plant in NE Arizona to take advantage of the material availability. One of the more little known experiences was his involvement in the development of the Merlin software with Frank and Paul Little. For those too young to know, Merlin was one of the great forerunners to all of the truss design software we enjoy today. His work with Dr. Stan Suddarth on PPA42 analysis is still acknowledged as ground-breaking. Mr. Hershey would help when help was needed and you never had to guess where you stood with Mr. Hershey, because he would tell you. He had no time for those who did not share his passion and he did not suffer fools. He would do his best to educate the uneducated, better the industry with every breath and make components unparalleled in his market. I remember calling on him in his later years and he was still the passionate, quick-witted man I had always known. He never lost a step and his sense of humor was always just at the edge of every conversation, ready to be unleashed. He was a great man and is often recalled for his thoughts on many issues we still face today. Rip Rogers – What a man! Rip is one of those guys who attracts attention without trying. People just wanted to be close enough to hear his words and feel the impact of his statements and proclamations. Rip was another one of those guys who dutifully worked to take our industry to another level. He donated time and resources to bring continuity to our industry in the early days. His thought was always, “How do we make the industry better?” I worked for the same company as Mr. Rogers many years ago. Each time he visited our location, he would stop and visit each person. He always believed that something could be learned and shared with each interaction. I can remember the first standard details he provided to a then fledgling WTCA. It was work developed by our company. He felt compelled to offer it to the association in an effort to bring consistency to truss design and placement plans. It seemed he was never looking for personal gain. He desperately wanted to see the industry grow and gain the respect of others in the construction supply chain. Even after his so-called retirement Mr. Rogers would show up to meetings. I can recall him joining us one year in Washington, D.C. to visit legislators on behalf of our industry. His energy was a sight to behold. He would race up and down Capitol Hill like a man half his age. He commanded such respect in those meetings. It was fun to watch him hold sway over our elected officials. And, he never wished to take credit. During the debriefing following our legislative visits, he would always remark about how the other members of our group had impressed him and the legislators. He is quite the gentleman, always letting others have credit for his efforts. Mr. Rogers’s thoughts on raising a family always stuck with me. He helped me when I needed help the most and gave me good counsel that I still use today. He and his wife Sally have always been an inspiration. They are an example of what a loving, supportive couple can accomplish. He was one of those passionate leaders at the beginning of our industry association. He set a standard for others to follow. The association at that time was like one of his children and he was the nurturing, guiding figure we needed. I will always hold Mr. Rogers as the right man at the right time. He gave of himself so that we could all succeed. This exercise in remembering our past leadership has been a great deal of fun for me. I promise I will get back to providing information on different topics ranging from TPI project committees to getting the most out of your supplier relationships. But, I will from time to time remind readers of the people that helped form our industry and association. CARL SCHOENING V P

Effective Incentive Programs for Every Group www.todd-drummond.com Phone: 603-763-8857 todd@todd-drummond.com Copyright © 2016

Many would agree that it is wise to implement an effective incentive program (IP) that actually increases productivity and lowers costs. However, very few companies actually have implemented such an effective IP, especially one that affects every group within an organization (including production, design, sales, and support). This article highlights the key aspects for implementing an IP for all groups. I must reemphasize the word “effective.” An IP is not effective if it does not actually increase productivity and lower costs on a consistent basis. According to industrial engineering consultants Mitch Fein and Fred Myers (both of whom hold PhDs), most companies experience a more than 42% gain in productivity by properly measuring productivity, setting realistic goals, taking corrective action in response to unacceptable practices, and rewarding individuals. Fein and Myers emphasize that, if normal level output consistently equals an average value, anything beyond that value should split the cost of labor evenly between the employee and the company. For every dollar saved, 50 cents should be distributed to the employees, and 50 cents should be saved for the company. Three things are happening at once: The company’s cost is lowered, its total volume is increased, and the employees are rewarded for exceeding the average productivity level. Every company administrator should desire this mutually beneficial situation because it reduces the cost of labor and helps increase sales due to the higher productivity. To motivate individuals to exceed the average output, one must keep in mind the individuals’ perspectives. Common sense indicates that an individual has a greater influence over one worker’s output than over that of a large group. Why would anyone believe that having a large group in the same IP pool would have much influence on an individual? (1 of 30 vs 1 of 3)? You’re only fooling yourself if you think this does not have a big influence on the end results. Smaller groups have greater impacts on the individual group members’ motivation and effort. The actual payout needs to occur on a timely basis so that the employees link the reward to the immediacy of their efforts. A once-a-year profit sharing program does not have any influence on daily output and should not be considered an IP. TDC suggests that IP has a meaningful effect when hourly employees are paid once per month and salaried employees are paid quarterly. Proper measurements are the hardest aspect of IP for most companies to tackle. Without proper, reliable measurements, your IP will fall apart before it begins. Always reward the behavior that you wish to influence. For each group, here are the measurements that TDC recommends:  Production – Use man-minutes, R.E. or S.U.—nothing else! For further explanation, please see http://todd-drummond.com/time-standards/  Sales – Use gross margin dollars (sales – direct costs = gross margin). Why reward salespeople if the company does not gain from a sale? By the way, a sales commission and an IP are actually the same thing, but TDC recommends that it is based on gross margin, not total sales.  Design – Most people have the most difficulty agreeing with what TDC recommends in this category, but if a company wants its designers to be properly motivated and to actually lower the direct cost of manufacturing, shop labor, and materials, designing prior to manufacturing is critical. Reducing costly errors should also be PHONE: 800-289-5627

Partial Testimonial of AppWright Software

United Truss Ed DeBiasio – Pres./Owner Innisfil, ON Canada The sales teams were fighting over the limited resources of our component manufacturing (CM). Every CM has limited capacity, even after investing tens of thousands of dollars in new equipment, people, and new buildings. The phone calls for scheduling became an ever increasing game of who and what was the daily priority, causing untold headaches with our CM people and also the actual manufacturing. Customer service was starting to be negatively affected and we were spending far too much time chasing critical information. Working with both truss applications and AppWright has been a non-issue for our designers and everyone else. We use the truss management application for costing only. Everything else is being done through the AppWright app. None of the common truss engineering management applications have anything to supplant AppWright as the communications platform of choice. This biggest advantage is helping our sales team spend more time making more sales and maintaining great customer service. Most of the time-consuming phone calls, email game of tag and other time wasters have all but been eliminated. We have salespeople who are working weekends, nights or go on vacation in Europe and yet are still able to monitor the progress of their sales via the AppWright web browser. If you want something that can actually enhance the productivity of all your staff, including the sales team, I highly recommend AppWright. Compared to the cost of new equipment, this has been a true bargain.

taken into account. TDC recommends a commission based on the total gross margin dollars the designer has created. More accumulated gross margin dollars indicates greater output and reduced direct costs. (It’s simple.) A designer can save a company tens of thousands of dollars simply by properly optimizing each truss design, but optimization is always the first thing a designer forgoes when pressed for time.  Support – Regardless of who support personnel are helping, this team shares in the actual incentive payout of the supported group. A simple flat percentage of that group’s payout works fine in most cases. Again, do not lump every support group together. These are the basics of an effective IP that has already been used successfully in many component companies. If you think that IP is too difficult to maintain, if you have tried it unsuccessfully in the past, or if you need to implement other practices before you can implement an IP, allow TDC to remove all these superficial barriers. An effective IP should be part of every company’s ethos, as it can lower costs, increase capacity, and build better employee relations. PHONE: 800-289-5627

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE.

THE HUNDEGGER TURBO DRIVE SAW IS A FAST, ACCURATE AND VERSATILE, FULLY AUTOMATED LINEAR SAW SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO CUT STRUCTURAL COMPONENT PARTS.

Hundegger continues to stretch the cutting capabilities of our industry by providing a single saw with options that can perform basic drilling, milling and printing operations in addition to 4 -axis cutting.

Hardly another “pretty face”, the TURBO Drive is a solid evolution of the popular SC Series saws. This workhorse, like all of Hundegger’s production saws, benefits from their experience learned from a wide variety of wood cutting and milling applications from over 4,700 saws to date. Specific to our wood component industry, the TURBO Drive has been thoroughly developed for world-wide customers prior to its introduction to the US. Regardless of your cutting application, be it I-Joist, dimensional 2x lumber, or any variety of EWP, we have the experience and equipment to efficiently bring your job to market.

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.

FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU

So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. How Important is Embedment?

Connectors are essential to the integrity of the truss. It is imperative the plate is properly pressed in order to insure effective lateral load transfer from truss member to truss member.

Since on occasion modern and older equipment does not press the plate completely into the member, the question might be: how much embedment gap is acceptable? The answer can be somewhat complicated; however, as a general rule, the plate cannot have an embedment gap over 1/32”. If you can slip a credit card between the plate and lumber and it’s not tight, then the plate is not pressed enough. There are several exceptions however. The accompanying chart illustrates several areas (yellow) that gap is allowed as long as the other areas are less than or equal to 1/32”. They are measured 1” from the member edge as shown.

In cooperation with FireforceOne, the American Wood Council (AWC) has developed three manuals and a website designed to inform developers, local building departments and fire departments on how to prevent and mitigate fire losses in buildings under construction. The manuals are developed with each of the three audiences in mind: •

Basic Fire Precautions during Construction of Large Buildings – applies to the design and planning stages, as well as the actual construction of buildings.

Hot Work during Construction of Large Buildings – describes best management practices of hot work, which is likely to mitigate the occurrence of large loss fires more than any other specific topic with buildings under construction.

Fire Department’s Role in Prevention and Suppression of Fires during Construction of Large Buildings – outlines pre-fire planning for large building projects, and prepares tactics and strategy for a fire if it occurs.

The website (www.ConstructionFireSafetyPractices.com) identifies many best management practices that were developed following an extensive literature search, placing emphasis on personal accountability of all stakeholders in the process. The intent of this website is to provide generic guidelines on best practices for maintaining fire safety and the applicability of the regulatory system, including building codes and standards, to mitigate fire loss. We invite you to visit www.ConstructionFireSafetyPractices.com. Please download the manuals, read the articles and share the information with your local developers, building departments and fire departments. We look forward to your receiving your comments on this website and its contents at fire@awc.org.

Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).

the Evolution of Steel truss technology Light gauge steel trusses have been around a long, long time. Steel trusses offer the same advantages that make light gauge steel framing generally appealing for a significant segment of the light frame construction industry. Light gauge steel does not burn. It does not serve as a food source for mold. It won’t warp. Termites have no use for it. As a consequence, steel trusses have found their way into a significant portion of light commercial construction…a portion that is growing. tHE CEE For many years, the dominant method for building trusses was the use of the back to back cee. Cee section stud material was available through a nationwide system of production and distribution. Stock lengths of commodity studs could be purchased through distribution. Engineering was typically done by structural engineers and involved a lot of manual work. Likewise truss production involved a lot of manual work – fetching material, cutting members on a chop saw, setting up for assembly, etc. It was an arduous process, but it got the job done. Other challenges included awkward shipping as the trusses were not “in line”. Also, roof framing and sheathing were not symmetric. PROPRiEtARY tRuSS Over time, inventive entrepreneurs developed clever proprietary material with which steel trusses could be made. The steel had more bends to give it compressive strength and generally most such trusses could be built in a single plane, unlike the back-to-back cee. Many shapes made their way to market, but few are widely used today. Automation made the difference in determining survival.

part of proprietary truss construction remains manual in nature – just as it was with back to back cees. Fetching inventory, measuring, cutting, marking of pieces, and setting up jigs are for the most part manual processes that require training, significant labor time and cost, and introduce the possibility of error. NEXt StEP The technology exists to develop a system that includes design automation, material that allows for in plane truss construction, and that also automates most of the manual processes that exist today in dominant truss systems. At Keymark, we have developed powerful steel truss software that automates the design of steel trusses out of cee – like material that can be built in plane. Production data for webs and chords is downloaded to proprietary roll formers. Pieces are not generated as stock lengths; they are cut to length, automatically marked to match up with each other, and pieces are notched and given pilot holes so they slide together and automatically jig. The result is a system that requires little training in the shop, a process that has quality control built in, and a substantial reduction in labor cost. There is no need to buy roll formers as job specific material is generated on our roll formers and sent to fabricators for assembly.

Forward Thinking. Respecting the Past. Ask most people about the lumber industry and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: ● technologically advanced, ● sustainable logging, ● small log harvesting, ● green lumber products, ● commitment to healthy communities, and ● ecologically-minded forest management When people talk about Vaagen Brothers, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Working in the forests of Washington for more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. LAYMAN'S LUMBER MARKET BRIEFING Weekly Head Start Softwood Framing Lumber Market Forecast & Trading Strategies Matt Layman, Publisher Week #13

Sunday

March 27, 2016

Market Summary

Order File, Forecast & Strategy

This is an FDP reversal week asso well as a 3-week interval. This three week interval is the third consecutive one making this rally now nine weeks old. Historically, "extended" trends last nine weeks. This one has certainly given buyers ample time and opportunity to build spring inventories. Producer order files are over stated. We recall that to begin last week, most were claiming three weeks...some even boasting a four week back log. You will also recall how Layman's Guide readers were warned of the improbability that mills had sold 200% of production for three consecutive weeks to create that order file. Those over exaggerations will be evident by the end of this week after seeing more suddenly prompt wood and order files down one week or less. Truckload and rail car deliveries are not an issue. Flatbeds and drivers are readily available and should remain fluid through April. All told, our lumber market is losing upside momentum and reversing to a spring bear market with no delivery disruptions.

• Producer Order Files... The proclaimed producer 3-week order file has a negative market impact, especially with only 1.2 million housing starts. If indeed it is true, our lumber market is grossly over bought. Regardless, downside momentum will accelerate while buyers liquidate recent purchases. • Forecast... Spring is here on the calendar yet spring weather has been here since February. That implies much of spring's housing starts have already been started. The question now is, are there enough qualified home buyers to jack this housing market up another notch? Static mortgage applications and rates say no. • Strategy... Prepare for price weakness and downside acceleration through April. The surprise to the economy will be no housing follow through in May.

Futures Summary & Forecast The upper long term weekly chart reached its resistance objective last week at the outside of the down sloping trend line. The lower May lumber daily chart found resistance at the same number, $312, at an old reversal high. Now what? Note the up sloping trend line on the lower chart. The total length of that long leg up, $232.50 to $312.20 is $79.70. The most likely and frequent retracement is 50%. That would be $40 or $272. Therefore, we should expect the corresponding Canadian SPF 2x4#2 to pull back to the $270-275 area between now and mid April. The Weekly Volatility Index next page shows SPF moving an average of $7.50 per week, the most volatile of each composite item.

Weekly Volatility Index...WVI Over Bought Condition Approaching This coming week will likely be a mixed bag of pricing. Mills have order files on many items, however, collectively they did not sell all of last weeks production. There will be prompt loads of various specified items, mostly in Canadian SPF and Green Doug Fir. Weakness will likely be predominantly in the narrows, 2x4 & 2x6 due to recent build ups in smaller logs. The purpose of the Weekly Volatility Index is to assist buyers and sellers with strategies for the coming week. Confidence in the forecast can be found in the past performance of the WVI. I made a few minor adjustments this week in the weekly totals to reflect the weekly price changes Monday though Friday. Previously it reflected Wednesday through Wednesday. Oversight on my part. This week I expect the 2x4's in the lumber composite to finish the week unchanged in SYP and western U.S. Dry Fir; lower in Canadian SPF and Green Doug Fir. OSB may nudge a little higher in some regions, however I expect the broader trend to be unchanged. Two weeks out the whole complex looks weaker. All of these movements are against a backdrop of a loss of upside momentum and transition to a spring bear market. Delayed purchasing and proactive selling is the suggested strategy.

Letter to the

The Last Word... Learning from the Best in the Business

One of our readers has submitted a bit of additional information on an article featured in our March issue, “The History of the ORIGINAL Rolsplicer.” The article correctly states how Truswal Systems Corp “Do it as if your job depended on it” was a directive that I will manufactured this revolutionary piece of the equipment in the early never forget, even 45 years later. Fateful words from an owner, 1980s, but our reader has added one more detail: The rolsplicer was to me, a new employee of Hydro-Air Engineering, long before it invented by a Canadian customer of Truswal, and Charles Gore of became MiTek. Other lasting words have come to me from SBCA Truswal purchased the rights to build it.

Hall of Fame (HOF) recipients:

Thank you to our author, Sean Hubbard of Square 1 Design & “Don’t introduce me as the owner, just say ‘Dave works with Manufacture, for bringing us this story, and to our reader for one more me’,” said Dave Chambers (1987 HOF) and owner of two highly detail in the rolsplicer’s evolution from Truswal to Klaisler to Square 1. Letters to the editor are welcome. Credited comments will be used with permission; contributors may choose to remain anonymous. All submissions may be edited for accuracy and relevance.

Tales of the Tried and True Classic or old? Broken in or broken down? Seasoned or rusty? It all depends on your perspective. Sometimes your favorite equipment is your oldest equipment – but how old is it? And how does it compare to others’ go-to machinery? Let’s find out! In the coming months, we hope you’ll share your thoughts and tales, anecdotes and antidotes, and maybe a picture or two. To tell us how your tried and true machinery still does the job right, simply send an email to: anna@componentadvertiser.org. Feel free to write your own story, or tell us a tale and we’ll capture the highlights. PHONE: 800-289-5627

successful truss plants. Though we all knew Dave was our boss, he was a servant to our customers, and inspired us to follow his lead. And Dave’s brother, Henry, thought a lot like Dave. “Customer Service” read the nameplate on his desk, and everyone else’s desk at his company, Chambers Truss. “Let me take Joe under my wing,” said Don Hershey (1995 HOF), to Dave Chambers when Dave didn’t select me for a job. Don was a mentor, and a manufacturing legend, who exuded extraordinary faith in people. “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not accomplishing anything,” said Mike Conforti (1994 HOF), who shepherded MiTek from a family business to a professional corporation. Mike was devoted to people, and understood their human capacity to make mistakes. His sincerity and honesty gained lifelong friends and customers. And these from outside of the truss business: “Bad news doesn’t improve with age,” said my army boss in Korea, who taught me to admit mistakes immediately. No manager appreciates surprises, and all expect prompt corrective action. “If you find a good person, follow him,” said my uncle, just before he died. This timeless gem defines mentorship to me: the passing of goodness from one individual to another. Job #1 is recognizing and nurturing the goodness that is often near and dear to us. Job #2 is to never stop seeking goodness inside and outside the workplace.
