hey always say, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Okay, but do they really look at it from the dog’s point of view? Think about it. Hopefully, the dog is in a nice, comfortable routine. Then, here comes a person wanting him to do something new, which takes a lot of effort. What is the reward? It’s probably some little treat. You can’t tell the dog some long explanation of the benefits of changing his routine. He won’t understand logical rationalizations. He can see the treat, but that alone might not be enough of an incentive.
Incentives, Logic, and Change Fortunately, people are smarter than dogs. We can perform complicated reasoning before making decisions. We can consider new ideas, new products, new methods, and new routines. It’s not our age that keeps us from making changes at work or at home—it’s the way we calculate the costs and benefits.
Big Ideas and Big Rewards Like it or not, we live in a world that is changing constantly. A good example of something new that has “taken off” in the past few years is cross-laminated timber (CLT). An article on the recent fire testing is included in this issue, and I expect to see more CLT news in the future. An excellent counterpoint to the CLT example, however, is The Last Word on Southern Pine. Having been an essential building material for many years, this resource is very far from being new, but new developments in how it may be processed could reap great rewards.

Sometimes it’s new approaches or products that appear on the stage, other times it’s old ideas that have found new advocates and new uses. Just as age is not what holds us back, novelty is not necessarily what propels us forward. So whether or not we decide to make a change, or learn a new trick, it’s important that we continue to honestly calculate the costs and benefits of both action and inaction.

Wall Panel Designer Primer Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com
I
n the 1960s, Ed Ryan set basic standards for panelizing walls, and for decades his homebuilding company (now NVR Inc.) followed his lead. His standards also made it easy for us to provide his wall panel equipment. The name we gave it, “Panel-Rite,” would have pleased Ed, since he believed that framing exclusively 8 foot tall walls with 16” on center studs was the right way to panelize. Taller walls, special blocking, and non-standard junctions needed to be added in the field. Jim Ryan even further “skinnyed down” his brother’s panels in his Ryland Homes product, removing every extra stud he encountered. As long as Ed and Jim kept their framing crews busy, all was well – even though these crews needed skilled carpenters to finish the framing. That was then . . . Now, 50 years later, framers effectively have shifted much of their field work into the panel shop, compelling suppliers like NVR, Toll, and BFS to build balloon and rake panels, include tub and cabinet blocking, and any assembly that will endear them to the framers. Panel shops have little automation with which to address the complexity (see “Panelization Automation” in July 2017’s Component Advertiser). As Gus Pearson at BFS says, “We’re building the entire house in our plant.” Today’s panel designers face a task arguably more complex than truss designers (see displayed panel elevations), as they must consider: 1. Architectural Details • Not just bearing wall locations, but all interior dimensions • Code required clearances in bathrooms, halls, stairs, landings, etc. • Opening sizes depend on door and window supplier, often an afterthought, requiring repairs o If rough opening too small, header will often need to be replaced o If rough opening too large, entire opening must be furred out o Egress windows require lower sills and minimum opening sizes • Code required wall bracing which may require portal frames and prefab shear panels • Elevations in conflict with floor plans o First and second floor windows not in exact vertical alignment o Windows not centered or symmetrically spaced o Options drawn exclusively in plan view, without accompanying elevations PHONE: 800-289-5627

2. Structural Requirements • Transferring girder and header loads to foundation – LVL vs. stacked stud capacities • “Simplified” APA wall bracing which may require portal frames and pre-fab shear panels • Stud size and spacing for tall walls and multi-story applications • Backing for wall connections to foundations and studding for steel rods (Zone 4 tie-downs)
3. Framer/Builder Preferences • Sheathing/energy code compliance • Junction types and sheet rock backing • Terminology Since wall panel designs are prescriptive (derived from the building code), the builder and his EOR/building designer should provide guidance on many of the above details. Written verification of exact opening sizes should be provided by the builder. Extensive checklists encompassing the above items should be reviewed with the buyer and entered into software defaults for repetitive jobs.

THE REAL DEAL
Don t be fooled by copycats. There is only one lumber retrieval system on the market with a well-known record of reliability—and it s always been built be Acer. Ask around—the Ranger Retrieval System has no equal.
Rigid overhead truss forms a strong backbone for long-term reliability. We designed and built our own vacuum pick-up system specifically for handling lumber. Self-cleaning function activates after every cycle, preventing dust problems common to other vacuum lumber pickup systems. Reduce labor costs and eliminate picking errors by feeding your linear saw automatically. ACER invented and holds the patents on this style of lumber retrieval system.
www.acerinc.com RANGER RS is a trademark of ACER INC. The RANGER RS system is protected under U.S. Patent #8,960,244 and other patents pending.

Pride Can Blind Us All from Seeing and Learning Things For Better Bottom Line Results I
t has taken our industry quite a few years, but once again it is common for wood component companies for a 15%+ EBITDA in normal markets, in which the sales exceed a two-week lead time. Many are exceeding 20% EBITDA. Do you know how well your company did in comparison to the average? Perhaps you are not privy to such information, but maybe you know that things need further improvement. If improvement is a real goal instead of just talking about it, maybe you should consider doing something different instead of repeating the same processes and expecting different results. Everyone should ask, “What are some of the things that prevent serious improvement from happening within my group?” Time and money are excuses many offer as the main reasons for not trying something different. Others say, “I need to find the right individual(s) to move us in the right direction.” If you feel these are your main obstacles, your company is more than likely going to continue repeating the same patterns and garner the same results it has always achieved. So what is preventing any company, department, or individual from making real, positive changes to garner better results? There are two main obstacles that must be overcome: pride and not admitting that you don’t have all the answers. According to psychology studies, “Modern cognitive theory states that people tend to perceive reality in light of pre-existing expectations and will ignore large amounts of contrary data before finally changing their minds.” In other words, we perceive the world the way we want regardless of the evidence showing it differently. Why is this so often the case? The answer is simple but hard to overcome. In one word it is pride. We cannot see that change is needed, or if we do indeed recognize the changes needed, our pride blinds us and prevents us from admitting it. We allow our pride to perceive everything as being right or wrong, as if by admitting that change is wanted or needed, we are saying, “We were wrong, and they were right.” What worked in the past was a good thing, but evolving to meet the challenges of today does, in fact, require us to make changes and see things from a new perspective. To embrace better ideas, one needs to set aside pride and listen to others with a different perspective and experience. I can tell you from experience that I have seen the results, time after time, and that making positive changes garners significant net-profit gains that many are simply blind to what is so plain to see by others. What are some good resources to start educating yourself with new ideas? Reading or listening to audio books is always a good starting point. Examples: The Goal by Goldratt covers the theory of constraints, any of the Dale Carnegie publications cover better management practices, and any books covering lean manufacturing will assist process improvement. Also, seminars at your local colleges and online training for the same type of information as described for book reading can help. In other words, start by looking outside our industry for better practices! PHONE: 800-289-5627

An all too common, repeated mistake everyone seems to make is to only listen to the equipment and plate vendors. Yes, many of you feel that you have developed a close and trusting relationship with them and they have witnessed many different operations. But the vendor’s goal is to make a sale, just as you do with your customers. The last thing they want to do is possibly threaten a future sale by directly challenging your practices and possibly upsetting you. They also tend to go with the latest popular practice that many consider industry leaders are embracing without truly understanding the pros and cons.
A great idea that may seem odd, but what about learning from someone who makes a living by giving advice and challenging your current practices: someone who’s actual, full-time occupation is to constantly read, review, and test the best practices within our industry and can teach your people better methods? A person, who, when offering advice, must back up the advice with proven methods that follow all the lean-manufacturing and time-study practices. Of course, I am speaking of myself. I am a lean-manufacturing consultant who has spent many weeks in each client’s operations, sometimes months, for over 100+ different companies. Just imagine the knowledge anyone could garner if they spent that kind of time in 100+ different companies, challenging their practices and offering solutions. One tends to learn from each consult and take that new information to the next. The most common statement I have heard from clients is, “You sure are not the typical B.S. consultant we have tried before. It is obvious to everyone you are a truss guy and know what you are talking about.” Long story short, pride can blind us all from seeing and learning things for better bottom line results. Do not expect different results from doing the same thing, which is foolish. The truly smart thing to do is be smart enough to know that we do not know everything and that we should look to others to find that missing knowledge

“Todd, You have a high opinion of the value of your services, and you are not bashful about charging. We have been building trusses since 1962. We believe our people are better than average; our equipment is as good as the best, our yard layout is adequate for our business and over all we questioned whether or not, considering what you charge, it would be worth it. Not wanting to be too myopic we decided to spend some money and listen to you. I will make this note short. It was the best investment I ever made for our truss shop. I no longer think you are
expensive. You covered so much that we will be forever appreciative.” Harold LaValley - Founder and Owner. - Newport, NH Corporate Office

Can Technology Alone Cure Quality Issues? T
here are many methods that are employed to help insure proper plate placement. Perhaps no technology has had a greater impact than ink jetting truss components with plate size and location. Ink jetting plate data can help you reduce necessary plate sizes resulting in plate cost reductions. With this being said, ink jetting plate data doesn’t get the job done if the truss builders do not understand and follow the prompts from the info. In the following situations, two issues are illustrated. In photo 1, plate angulation - location was ignored. Post analysis required this plate removed (along with the stack of matching trusses) and re-plating.
Photo #1
In photo 2, the improper plate size was used. This is unfortunate, because post analysis indicated insufficient tooth count. These trusses also required rework. Technologies will not eliminate errors. Rather, it is important to keep in mind that training and inspection are the best approach to quality trusses.

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.
FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU
So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. Improve Your Production Processes and Say “NO” to Waste Part 7 in our TIMWOODS series Ben Hershey, President, Coach, & Mentor 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC
Reducing Over-Processing is a critical part of creating an efficient lean production/distribution company. As our friend Tim
Woods has been guiding us through our lumber yards, manufacturing operations, and offices, we’ve seen a lot of wastes. Now it’s time to address the second Big O – a very big source of waste which can be a significant drain on our businesses.
Over-Processing Overproduction is making products in too great a quantity or before actually needed, leading to excessive inventory (WIP/Work In Process). Likewise, over-processing is doing too much and taking too many steps. Although they are separate ideas, both can be thought of as two halves of the problem of “too much.” They are contrary to basic principles in Lean manufacturing which require that you make what the customer wants when they want it, pulling only what is ordered through your work flow. In addition, these wastes can obscure other problems within your processes.
Costs of the Waste of Over-Processing What are some of the costs? If you avoid addressing over-processing, it can: • Cause you to tie up your capital in stock, raw materials, WIP, and finished goods. • Require additional space on the production floor or in the lumber yard. • Necessitate people and equipment to move it around as well as containers for storage.
Causes of the Waste of Over-Processing When you walk in the yard or plant, why do you see so much overprocessing? Many times what I hear is, “this is how we have always done it!” Over the years, I have been to numerous companies that run huge batches of material, creating enormous amounts of WIP when they instead should reduce the batches, improve their flow, reduce lead time, and improve customer service. In general, over-processing is caused by: • Large batch sizes • Unstable schedules • Unreliable work processes • Unbalanced or mis-scheduled cells or departments • Working to a forecast/inaccurate information that is not actual demand. Like overproduction, there are logistical and psychological causes. Often we produce large batches because of long setups on some of our machines, so we try to maximize our throughput of these machines and use “economical batch quantities” to dictate how much material is processed rather than what the customer wants. Other times we do not have reliable suppliers and so we “stock-up” on the supply we need. And finally, we have unreliable processes and schedules which cause us to plan for delays, plan for disruptions, etc. PHONE: 800-289-5627

How to Eliminate or Reduce Over-Processing For starters, literally go see for yourself what you can uncover. Walk the yard and plant, see where your team is building in this over-processing (and overproduction), and begin to eliminate it. A few ideas to help you start reducing these wastes in your operation are: • Realize you are doing it! We all need to understand that we often plan our own delays and large batches just because we always have done so. • Tackle set-up times on equipment to enable the production of smaller batches. • Implement the principles of lean manufacturing and identify the value stream using tools such value stream mapping, process mapping, spaghetti diagrams, and other analytical tools which we can help you with.
The TIMWOODS Journey Identifying waste and eliminating it from our operations is a critical part of every Lean journey. We have enjoyed working through the various wastes that occur in lumber yards, millwork plants, and our component yards, and we have now addressed 7 of the 8: T-Transportation, I-Inventory, M-Motion, W-Waiting, O-Over-Production, O-OverProcessing, and D-Defects. Next up, we will tackle S-Skills. In the meantime, I invite you to go back and reread the series, and if you need additional help, it would be our pleasure to assist you.
Best Practice Tip – Attend the Show This year’s BCMC Show is just around the corner, and if you have not signed up, it’s not too late. This year is going to be one of the biggest and best shows we have had to date. With more exhibitors and awesome educational sessions, you are certain to see a positive return on your investment. This year, we have 10 different educational sessions which cover many aspects of your operation. In addition, there is a pre-show seminar on risk management, a plant tour, golf outing, 5K, bike ride, and much more. Register today and join me and so many more who find this the most valuable show you will attend. You can find 4Ward Consulting Group in booth #1312 along with many other great exhibitors. Wood Runner AirPick
A

Component Manufacturing dverti$er
Serving the Structural Building Components Industry
The next generation Wood Runner® AirPick™ is a giant step forward in automated lumber retrieval systems and is up to 30% faster than the old screw-driven system. The old style lumber retrieval system used screws to pick up lumber, but the AirPick has found a new faster, better way with suction. As a totally automated system, the AirPick eliminates the costs and limitations associated with manually fed saws. The AirPick is incredibly safe, with active monitoring of the work area, the gantry can slow or completely stop itself to avoid people wandering into the work area. This proven technology brings a new level of versatility, efficiency and accuracy to picking and feeding lumber to saws like Omni Miser, Alpine's ALS, Hundegger TURBO, Monet DeRobo, and other linear saws. Feel free to watch our videos and click on any photo to see additional shots in our gallery. For more information regarding this new innovative machine, get back to us by phone or e-mail! From $124,900 FOB MN.

Acer is proud to announce added features and all-new software for the Ranger RS!
In the past 6 years, we have built dozens of reliable and productive lumber retrieval systems. With millions of boards delivered to saws around the world, we have used that experience to develop these new features:
Crown detection on the fly—each board is scanned and flipped if necessary for consistent crowning. Queuing of up to 12--2x4s on the deck to keep the saw working while restocking the lumber carts. Automatic laser scanning determines and displays actual board quantity in each station —sawyer can see available inventory at a glance. Board-width verification measures each board and ensures proper width to reduce errors. All-new software package with enhanced diagnostics and operator display to improve productivity. The advanced Ranger RS will set the pace of production in your plant.
RANGER RS is a trademark of ACER INC. The RANGER RS system is protected under U.S. Patent #8,960,244 and other patents pending.

Forward Thinking. Respecting the Past. Ask most people about the lumber industry and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: ● technologically advanced, ● sustainable logging, ● small log harvesting, ● green lumber products, ● commitment to healthy communities, and ● ecologically-minded forest management When people talk about Vaagen Brothers, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Working in the forests of Washington for more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. Ozone NAAQS Already Sufficiently Protective of Public Health
September 2017 #10218 Page #65
Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).
T
he House of Representatives has passed the Ozone Standards Implementation Act of 2017 (HR 806), which balances air quality with sound regulatory processes. The legislation would prevent a rushed implementation of the 2015 ozone Nation Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). AWC urges the Senate to move quickly to pass a common-sense approach that will also support global competitiveness for the wood products industry. Currently under the Clean Air Act, at least every five years the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must update its assessment of the latest science and consider whether any changes are needed to NAAQS for criteria pollutants. EPA missed its review deadline of the 2008 rule for ozone in 2013, highlighting that this timeframe is insufficient. The bill’s proposed switch to a 10-year NAAQS review cycle is an important improvement adding certainty. EPA had announced a one-year delay in implementing the ozone NAAQS earlier this year, as it considered whether states needed more time to make non-attainment designations. Last month, EPA reversed position on the delay and is now letting the 2015 NAAQS rule move forward before the 2008 rule has been fully implemented. According to EPA’s own analysis, the cost impact of a new rule will be more than $15 billion annually, making it one of the most expensive air rules ever. Although under current law EPA cannot consider cost when setting NAAQS (only during implementation), health effect evidence has not changed significantly since 2008 to justify the tighter requirements. Air quality has gotten significantly better over the last several years and will continue to improve due to other EPA rules even if the ozone NAAQS is not changed. Deferring compliance with the 2015 ozone NAAQS until 2025, as the legislation proposes, allows accounting for these air quality gains and avoids unnecessary controls in or near areas that will meet the standard anyway, but not quickly enough. Constantly changing air quality requirements creates a repeating need for capital investment to meet changing requirements, as well as significant uncertainty for new mill investments that are critical to global competitiveness. As ozone limits are driven toward what is essentially equivalent to background levels in some parts of the country, especially considering the significant role of international sources of emissions, it will also be driving companies to cancel job-creating projects. And with other NAAQS reviews pending, such as for fine particulate matter, the situation only gets worse.

Fire Testing Completed on Full-Scale Mass Timber Building
Five full-scale mass timber fire tests in a multi-story apartment building have been completed with promising results.
The International Code Council Ad-hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings provided the five fire scenarios that were tested in each of the two onebedroom apartments constructed using mass timber. The test scenarios included various arrangements of exposed and unexposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) with open doors between living and sleeping areas. Additionally, automatic sprinkler systems effectiveness was evaluated.
Test 1: A mass timber structure fully protected with gypsum wall board was subjected to a large furnishings and contents fire. The test was terminated after 3 hours without significant charring on the protected wood surfaces of the structure.
Test 2: Approximately 30% of the CLT ceiling area in the living room and bedroom were left exposed. The test was terminated after 4 hours, providing additional time to determine if there would be any significant fire contribution from the exposed CLT. Notably, once the furnishings and contents had been consumed by the fire, the exposed CLT essentially self-extinguished due to the formation of char that protected the underlying wood.
Test 3: Parallel CLT walls were left exposed, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. Similar to Test 2, once the apartment furnishings and contents had been consumed by the fire, during which a protective surface of char formed on the CLT, the mass timber surfaces essentially self-extinguished.

Tests 4 and 5: To examine the effects of sprinkler protection, for both tests all mass timber surfaces in the living room and bedroom were left exposed. Test 4 demonstrated that, under normal operating conditions, a single sprinkler easily contained the fire. For Test 5, the fire was allowed to grow in the compartment for 23 minutes before water was supplied to the sprinklers which quickly controlled the fire.

“The results of these fire tests will continue to be studied and will help inform code change recommendations from the Ad-hoc Committee later this year,” said Stephen J. DiGiovanni, P.E., Ad-hoc Committee Chair and Fire Protection Engineer for the Clark County (NV) Department of Building and Fire Protection. “These tests are an important part of the extensive research data the Committee has reviewed to validate the performance of tall wood buildings.”
The tests were funded in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s State and Private Forestry Wood Innovations division and Forest Products Laboratory and the American Wood Council, and were conducted at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Fire Research Laboratory. A General Technical Report FPL-GTR-247 on the fire tests will be available from the Forest Products Laboratory in the near future.
The American Wood Council (AWC) is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing, representing over 75 percent of an industry that provides approximately 400,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC members make products that are essential to everyday life from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon. Staff experts develop stateof-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to assure their safe and efficient design, as well as provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations. AWC also advocates for balanced government policies that affect wood products. www.awc.org | @woodcouncil The mission of the U.S. Forest Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 30 percent of the nation’s surface drinking water to cities and rural communities and approximately 66 million Americans rely on drinking water that originated from the National Forest System. The agency also has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 900 million forested acres within the U.S., of which over 130 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live. https://www.fs.fed.us The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) opened in 2003. FRL engineers utilize its unique capabilities and sophisticated instrumentation to assist ATF Special Agent Certified Fire Investigators (SA/CFI) with fire investigations. In addition, FRL engineers work closely with other federal agencies to provide testing services to assist with their research programs or investigations. This one-of-a-kind facility includes state-of-the-art scientific instruments that allow researchers to measure data significant to fire behavior, including heat release rate, burning rate, and smoke production. The facility offers a range of capabilities, from bench-scale fire measurement instruments to a 16,900-square-foot burn room that can accommodate a three-story structure. The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) is capable of collecting over 2,300 channels of data every second. A 16-channel video collection system allows for video to be captured in both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD). Additional video capabilities include high speed and FLIR thermal imaging cameras. The facility also features an on-site air and water pollution treatment facilities. https://www.atf.gov/arson/atf-fire-research-laboratory PHONE: 800-289-5627

To protect workers against the hazards of electricity, teach them El agua y la electricidad pueden ser una combinación fatal. Las áreas the basic facts about the causes of shock and death. One of the big problems in understanding the dangers of electrical shock is the mistaken belief that only húmedas y los objetos metálicos le ofrecen un paso fácil a la electricidad para high voltages kill. JobLine Compensation Calculators
Thomas McAnally The
JobLine
Back in 2006, we created a compensation calculator using data gained since we started recruiting back in 1992. Multiple factors go into determining total compensation and we have calculators for Truss Designers, Sales Reps, and General Managers in the Truss Manufacturing Industry. Every year, we update current numbers and factors based on the previous year and current job opportunities. A recent calculation produced the results shown in the image on the right. The total was $74,658 based on an average 45 hour week. The number is based on national data and does not take into consideration regional cost of living or tax structure. Because most of the jobs we have are Eastern and Central US, it is more accurate in Texas, Virginia, or Florida, than in California. Also since 2006, we’ve been asking each user how accurate the calculator is. The column on the left represents the responses since inception. On the right, a shorter period is examined. What it tells us is that the results are very close given the High and Low responses are fairly even.
2006-2017
2014-2017
56% OK
56% OK
11% High

The percent of users who felt the rate was OK remaining at 56% is not bad, but there is always room for improvement!

The Never-Ending Search for Truss Repair Information By Kelly Sias, PE
Truss repair is one of the most frequently asked about truss topics. Not surprisingly, when we asked for suggested truss topics in a truss blog, truss repair made the list. Because the summer months bring about a peak in new construction – and plenty of truss repairs to go along with it – the beginning of June [was] the perfect time to visit this topic.
From trusses that get dropped or cut/drilled/notched at the jobsite, to homeowners who want to modify their existing trusses to add a skylight or create attic space to fire-damaged trusses, a multitude of scenarios fall under the broad topic of truss repair. This article focuses on various references and resources that can provide some assistance. But first it helps to break down the broad “truss repair” topic into more manageable-sized categories.
New Construction vs. Recent Construction vs. Old Construction By far, the easiest type of truss repair is new construction, when the trusses either haven’t been installed yet or are still in the process of being installed. Whether the repair is relatively simple (e.g. a broken web) or a little more complicated (e.g. the trusses need to be stubbed), the beauty of new truss construction is that the truss manufacturer – and truss Designer – can be contacted and help with the repair. The truss Designer can easily open up the truss designs in the truss design software, quickly evaluate the trusses for the appropriate field conditions and issue a repair.
A good reference related to truss repairs for new truss construction is the Building Component Safety Information (BCSI) booklet jointly produced by SBCA and TPI. Section B5 of the BCSI booklet, which is also available as a stand-alone summary sheet, covers Truss Damage, Jobsite Modifications & Installation Errors. This field-guide document describes the steps to take when a truss at the jobsite is damaged, altered or improperly installed, common repair techniques, and the information to provide to the truss manufacturer when a truss is damaged, which will assist in the repair process.

The next easiest truss type to repair is recent construction, where the trusses were constructed recently enough that: a) the truss plates are easy to identify, and b) the truss design drawings may even still be available. In these cases, design professionals other than the original truss Designer may be contacted to repair the trusses. For some types of repairs, the design professional can work off the truss design drawing to design the repair. Other times it might be necessary to model and analyze the truss using structural design software; alternatively, a truss manufacturer can be contacted to model the truss in their truss design software for a fee.
Often, the design professional wants to know the design values for the truss plates that were used to construct the truss. If there are truss design drawings available, they will indicate which truss plates were used in the design, and then the truss plate manufacturer can be contacted for more information. It is also easy to search for the truss plate code reports online (for instance, check icc-es.org). If no truss design drawing is available, there is still a way to identify the truss plates. Currently, there are only five major truss plate manufacturers in the United States, and they are listed on the Truss Plate Institute website. That makes identification of the truss plates used in recently constructed trusses easier because all of the current manufacturers’ plates will have markings that are described in their code reports. (Note that there are also a couple of truss manufacturers in the U.S. that manufacture their own truss plates.)

Finally, the most challenging type of trusses for truss repairs are those found in older buildings. Design professionals involved in these types of repair often aren’t sure where to start. Truss design drawings are often not available, and the act of trying to identify the truss plate manufacturer is challenging at best, unsuccessful at worst. As a point of reference, there were 14 truss plate manufacturers that were TPI members in 1987 (see image), and only one of those companies is still in the current list of five companies. Therefore, the truss plates found in a truss built around 1987 will be difficult to identify. One option is to contact TPI and see if they can point you in the right direction.

Simple vs. Complex Repairs Another way to break down truss repairs is to divide them into easy and challenging repairs. People often ask for “standard” truss repair details. Unfortunately, standard details only address the simplest types of repair; and those usually aren’t the types of repair that are asked about. Details simply cannot cover the wide range of truss configurations and every type of repair situation.
Sample repair detail for a simple repair
With the exception of simple repairs, most truss repairs rely heavily on the judgment and experience of the design professional doing the repair. And because there are not entire textbooks devoted to truss repair (that I am aware of, anyway), Designers must pull from a variety of resources, both to learn more about truss repair and to design the repair. For repairs using plywood or OSB gussets, the APA Panel Design Specification is a must-have reference. Some people prefer to use dimension lumber scabs for their repairs, whenever possible, simply because they are more familiar with dimension lumber (and the NDS) than they are with Plywood/OSB or the APA Panel Design Specification.
Next, the fasteners for the repair must be selected and the allowable loads determined. For nail design values, I am a big fan of the American Wood Council’s Connection Calculator, which provides allowable nail shear values for just about any combination of main and side members that you can think of, including OSB and plywood side members – particularly handy for truss repairs. For more complex repairs, and especially repairs involving higher forces, an excellent fastener choice is a structural wood screw such as our Strong-Drive® SDS or SDW screws. When I worked in the R&D department at Simpson Strong-Tie, a frequently asked question was whether we had double-shear values for our SDS screws. The questions always seemed to come from Designers who wanted them for truss repairs. Fortunately, we do have double-shear values for our SDS screws. You can find them in our Fastening catalog. Fire-Damaged Trusses and Truss Collapses These situations are in a category by themselves because they go beyond even the most complex repairs involving a major modification to the truss. The biggest difference is that the latter case involves mostly known facts and perhaps some conservative assumptions, whereas damage due to fire or collapse includes many unknowns. Most of the truss Designers I have spoken to about truss damage due to fire or truss collapse often recommend replacement of the trusses rather than repair because it is usually too difficult to quantify the damage to the lumber and/or joints. In fires, there can be “hidden” damage due to the sustained high temperatures, while the truss appears to have no visible damage. Likewise, in a truss collapse, not only may there be too many breaks in the trusses involved in the collapse, but there may also be trusses that suffered severe stresses during the collapse and have damage that is not visible. To attempt a repair in either of these cases often requires an inspection at the jobsite, and the result may still end up being replacement of some or all of the trusses. Therefore, the cost of a full-blown inspection should be weighed against the cost of replacing the trusses. The Structural Building Components Association website has a page with information pertaining to fire issues. It includes a couple of documents related to fire damage that are worth checking out.
Beyond the Blog: Where to Get More Truss Repair Information The best bet for getting practical design information related to truss repairs is to keep an eye out for short courses, workshops or seminars. ASCE has hosted a Truss Repair Seminar (Evaluating Damage and Repairing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses) in the past and may very well offer something like it again. Virginia Tech hosted a short course on Advanced Design Topics in Wood Construction Engineering, which included a section on Wood Truss Repair Design Techniques.

News & Announcements New Hanger for Two-Hour Fire-Rated Walls Easily Installs Before Drywall
Pleasanton, Calif. – The new DG fire wall hanger series from Simpson Strong-Tie, an industry leader in engineered structural connectors and fasteners, is ideal for Type III multi-family, multi-level building construction and easily installs on a twohour wood stud fire wall during framing – before the drywall is in place. The new series includes three models of top-flange hangers that connect floor joists to the wood wall and feature enough space for two layers of 5/8” drywall to be installed later. The completed fire wall assembly remains continuous from floor to floor. All three fire wall hangers have been tested according to ASTM E814 standards to verify that the hangers do not reduce the two-hour assembly rating, and therefore each of the DG hangers received F (flame) and T (temperature) ratings for use on either or both sides of a wall. “With the increasing popularity of Type III multi-story wood construction, it’s more important than ever to ensure that these large, multi-family buildings are constructed with the safest, strongest, most rigorously tested products,” said Sam Hensen, vice president and general manager of Connectors at Simpson Strong-Tie. “Specifying and installing this product will help our customers streamline their workflows on the construction site while adhering to the strict code requirements for load and fire safety.” Key features of the DG fire wall hangers include: • A gap wide enough to install two layers of 5/8” drywall • The ability to frame the entire structure before starting drywall installation o Published listing by Intertek for the DG series in a 2-hour wood fire wall • Including F (flame) and T (temperature) ratings per ASTM E814 testing • No need for additional restraint against rotation of the wall top plates • Can be used on 2x4 and 2x6 walls • May be used on both sides of a 2x6 wall

The Last Word... Straightening Crooked Southern Pine
Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com
F
inally we are learning what the Canadians figured out: how to maximize the use of Southern Pine (SP) lumber. We are advancing truss equipment while they are transforming sawmills to enhance the quality of this once too-crooked product. The Canadians are replaying the strategy that enabled them to begin capturing a lion’s share of the truss chord market in the 1970s. Back then, they used machines to select a competitive product, 1650f MSR SPF, from the mixed bag of weak and strong Canadian timber species. Today, they are using ultra sound and vision technology to produce a consistent MSR product from the SP mills they’ve acquired. And just in time to replace the higher grade lodgepole pine product that was depleted by the pine beetle. We are developing truss machinery to improve truss quality on several fronts. For the first time, at BCMC, we will demonstrate automated lumber crowning prior to cutting, minimizing truss-to-truss variability. And when lumber reaches the saw, our Blade linear saw further improves the accuracy of cuts three ways: Grabbing boards tightly and holding them directly adjacent to the saw blade, instead of 8 to 10 inches away, as is the case with pinch roller feed systems. This further reduces bowing of boards between infeed roller and the saw blade. Using a sonar-operated Crooked Lumber Sensor to insure centerline cuts even with warped members. Cutting boards edgewise, in the same orientation as they are installed in roof trusses, not flatwise. Additional quality improvements are realized with automated jigging, laser imaging, and trackless gantry roller systems. For long spans, widely spaced agricultural applications, and attic spaces, Southern Pine will continue to be the prevalent structural solution. With modern grading and fabrication machinery and good in-plant quality control, this strong domestic resource will well serve the component industry.
