”What do I use for a ‘match point’ when trying to align the finished fascia/ trim when framing unequal pitched roof planes?”

Editor/Publisher Thomas McAnally tmcanally@componentadvertiser.com

Advertising Thomas McAnally Position available

This is an interesting – and very misunderstood – question, as it really pertains to information (and points in space) beyond the truss or rafter framing that you as a component manufacturer may be dealing with. Knowing the correct match point will make for a very happy finish/trim carpenter, as they will know that you had them in mind when you designed, cut and built the roof components.

Coming up with the correct match point involves picking the Stan Sias - National Manager point where the architect and/or finish carpenter really wants Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie his planes to match. Too often, a truss designer picks the end of the truss, whether that is the end of the overhang or the end of the cantilever, as the match point for unequal pitched roof planes. But is that the place where the architect and/or finish carpenter really wants his planes to match? No. On a shingled roof, the edge of the roof shingles is the place where the planes should meet so that the roof edge is at the same elevation across both affected planes. Therefore, the best match point is typically the edge of the drip edge installed under the shingles. To get this point, one needs to know the exact plans for the framing and trim detailing beyond the truss/rafter framing.

A couple of observations can be made from the graphics below. First, the further the “match point” gets from the end of the truss overhang/cantilever, the more of a height variance there can be (see Fig.1). Obviously, pitches that are nearly the same will cause for less variance, and larger pitch differences will cause for greater variance. [Editors note: This example assumes that the total overhang width is intended to be the same for both pitched planes.] Second, the height of the framing, whether with a sub-fascia or without, is only going to be the same if the plane pitches are the same. If the plane pitches are different and all else is supposed to remain the same [i.e., the overhang width, roof edge elevation, etc.], then the framing height cannot possibly be the same (see Fig. 2). Unfortunately, if the finished eave trim detail gets very detailed or intricate, it can be somewhat cumbersome to get the correct framing elevations (heel heights). Sometimes, the Building Designer will actually specify the roof edge elevation along with the topof-plate (bearing) elevation. When we are blessed with this information, then we only need to figure out what the actual framing overhang and/or cantilever distances should be. Knowing where the match point is located both horizontally and vertically with reference to the top of the bearing, we can then determine the required heel height for each of our different pitches. Let’s put some numbers to our graphic and run a quick example. Assume we have a standard 2x4 heel with ¼" butt cut on the 4/12 pitched roof. continued on page #5

two (or more) specified pitches will have the lowest heel height and the higher pitched planes will go up from there.

Assuming 1/2" thick roof sheathing, the overall height above the top-of-wall (TOW) would be 4.466" (including the sheathing). If we calculate the drop from there to the end of the roof plane some 20" away, we would find that our ‘match point’ is located at 2.201" below the TOW [20"/12x4=6.667"-4.466”].When applying that location to the 12/12 plane, we see that this plane will rise 20", therefore making the top of the sheathing 17.799" above the TOW [20" -2.201"]. Given that the ½" roof sheathing at the 12/12 pitch is 0.707" in plumb thickness, the heel height at the outside face-of-stud (FOS) is 17.092" [17.799-0.707"].

Looking at where the truss overhangs stop (behind the 2x sub-fascia), one can clearly see that the end of the truss overhangs should not be the match point, as that would cause for the 12/12 plane to be too low, and the fascia/trim would not align (see Fig. 3). Without re-framing the entire steeper roof, the only way to resolve the difference in elevation is to reduce the horizontal projection of the steeper pitched roof until the fascia/trim once again matches (see Fig. 4).

Testimonial of Consultation Services Over the years United Truss (a subsidiary of United Lumber) has done an outstanding job of providing our customers with quality trusses for their building needs. We reached a point, though, where our manual practices were restricting our capacity to not only serve existing clients, but also limited our ability to serve or target new customers. So in the midst of automating our plant and updating our production/design practices we chose to contact Todd. Innisfil, ON Canada Were we ever glad we made the leap to request Todd’s consultation services. Todd’s consultation encompassed time and motion studies, best practices, the theory and practical components of lean manufacturing, which then enabled us to go back to the drawing board in terms of our pricing model. For years we had been pricing our products without actually and properly tracking our actual costs. Todd’s teachings showed that we could and should incorporate proper costing fundamentals into our model, and the icing was he showed us how to do this. Without a doubt we made the right decision to hire Todd Drummond, and once fully implemented, we have no doubt that United Truss will reach heights we had never thought possible under our old regime. Our entire staff, encompassing our production and design staff as well, were both impressed and thankful for the ideas and instructions that Todd brought to the table. Thanks Todd

L

G L A Y M A N ' S LUMBER GUIDE

The Softwood Framing Lumber Market Forecast & Trading Strategy Since 1985 Matt Layman, Publisher Week #04 Monday January 20, 2014

What Is the Lumber Market Going to Do? Overview & Trading Strategies How to Anticipate the Top...Uni1ied Momentum North American softwood lumber producers are selling production, however they are not building substantive order :iles. The four pauses in the rally since last summer show us periods of consumer inventory liquidation, rather than accumulation. Sustained demand is enough to absorb these buying breaks and still move prices higher. This type of buying does NOT create an over bought market, which is the ONLY reason bull markets end. Increasingly sustained buying, by all sectors, all products is a precursor to the end of a bull market. That sustained all-‐around participation is not currently being experienced. Therefore, we should anticipate additional upside potential, regardless of price premiums. Typically that sustained, uni:ied buying evolves with anticipation of weather breaking in the north, which is a few weeks prior to the start of our highest demand period beginning at week #10. Consequently, we could anticipate this concerted buying to begin near week #7....or mid-‐February. Would you like to receive Layman's Lumber Guide FREE for the month of March? Theory of Constraints and Linear Saws Website: www.todd‐drummond.com; Phone: 603‐763‐8857 Email: todd@todd‐drummond.com January 8, 2014 – Copyright © 2014

Facts and understanding about linear saws performance concerning the Theory of Constraints and Linear Saws. Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a concept that is widely known as simply the bottleneck of a process or organization. However, what is not often known about TOC practices is how they can apply to equipment, such as linear saws. So here is a quick lesson on TOC…  Offshoot of lean manufacturing principles.  Every organization has at least one constraint (bottleneck) that prevents the whole system from achieving higher performance. All workstations or machines must follow this TOC rule for maximum output:  Total output cannot exceed the slowest step in the line process (line balance). Mechanical Reliability + Operator(s) Skills + Input Speed + Machine Operation Speed + Output Speed = Total Productivity

A Can do 4 but only 3 Units

Slowest process will dictate total unit output! Here is what – based upon my observations – all linear saws must perform in order to cut a piece of lumber: 1st. Feed the lumber piece into the blade area 2nd. Pause… 3rd. Set up blade angle 4th. Pause… 5th. Perform the cut 6th. Pause… 7th. Move the piece of lumber (if the next cut is not at the same location) 8th. Pause… 9th. Change the angle 10th. Pause… 11th. Perform the cut 12th. Pause… 13th. Move the lumber piece to the new cut location or remove it from the blade area 14th. Pause… I recently completed a comparison time study, displayed on a spreadsheet, of different types (brands) of linear saws. The results are startling. Here are some common takeaway issues for all linear saws: - Most, if not all, are spending too much of their time in operation idle, not cutting lumber, because there is no lumber in the saw to cut. - All should have automated lumber in and out feed systems to increase their overall productivity. - The speed at which they move lumber and change angles is not consistent among the different brands. - All have a pause time between performing a process, but the pause time length varies among brands. The amount total productivity (with a given number of cuts, pieces, and efficiencies) is an astounding difference in time to complete for the different brands. Take, for example, a job that requires 2,000 pieces, 3 cuts per piece, with an average of 3.5 pieces per stock length at 80% efficiency. Results for the saw hours… Single-piece systems - 6.2 Saw Hours (Fastest) - 13.03 Saw Hours (Slowest) Double-piece systems that double-feed 25% of the stock into the saw - 8.3 Saw Hours (Fastest) - 13.2 Saw Hours (Slowest) One thing to keep in mind is that, no matter how fast a linear saw may cut the pieces, it does not matter if the accuracy of length and the angle cuts are poor. When you have pieces with inaccurate lengths or angles at the build table, your overall productivity is severely hampered, not to mention your quality. My time studies spreadsheet also includes the typical results of an automated 5-blade component saw, so it also gives an understanding of linear saw versus component saw time results for varying conditions. If you want a copy of my time studies spreadsheet for 11 different linear saws; well, you have to pay for that. Providing information is how I make my living. ;-)

Designer/Design Manager Truss/Panel/I-Joist/Stairs/EWP Relocation: Ohio 18 years Design experience with 3 as a Senior Designer. Primary duties: design, layout, and optimization. Plant/Production Manager Truss My experience in the industry is extensive and includes engineering, sales, administration and production. I think it would be easier to list two job descriptions I can't claim credit for performing, with a caveat, although I never operated a component saw or worked extensively in the maintenance department I had a tremendous success improving aspects of both these areas. I was a hands on owner, even to the extent of developing a 28 hour training course in truss fabrication which potential employees had to pass. I lowered our workers comp x-mod to .58 and kept it there. I lead over 200 individuals and knew each one of them but I did have trouble with the names of their wives and children. I coordinated efforts of every department as if from one customer to another. I read extensively and studied trends in order to develop industry best practices. Customer satisfaction, quality and safety can and must work hand in hand. It is often said, "You can only offer two of the three things customers always want";and you must choose between Price, Quality or Service. I don't believe that is a true statement and the entity which can satisfy all three? ....has everyone else wondering how they do what they do! I put together a production team which quadrupled production. I created a saw system which could handle 5,000 boards / shift with 7-800 set-ups.(one 1 component saw) I helped develop a fully automated functioning quality control devise for roof trusses which is now patented. I overcame huge obstacles and I met with success. But failures followed those successes I am being honest. I think my best ideas will reflect additional lessons learned following such failure. They be the ones which are suited to improve an envirionment where opportunities currently exist for significant bolstered by an awareness we should always strive for improvement. Whatever we are doing now can in whatever aspect of an operation you turn your attention to can be made better.. Don’t Forget! You Saw it IN in THE the YOU S AW IT

Safety First! Safety Meeting Topics From State Fund CA.

Safety and Substance Abuse Dont Mix Drug use and alcohol consumption are normally considered personal issues. They only become an employers concern when they affect safety and worker performance. Drug and alcohol abuse cost employers through high absenteeism and sick pay. Abusers hurt themselves and their families if they lose their job as a result of their actions. If they are fired or cannot function on the job, the company loses the services of an experienced worker. Those under the influence of drugs or alcohol cause friction in the work group, lower morale and work efficiency, use poor judgment that results in bad decisions, and give the company a poor public image. Certain times of the year individuals should be especially aware of their alcohol and drug consumption. In the winter months when the days are dark and dreary, some people experience a sense of depression or seasonal affected disorder (SAD). They may turn to drugs or alcohol in the mistaken belief it will relieve the symptoms of the disorder. The holiday season, with increased social gatherings or added financial stress, leads some people to misuse drugs or alcohol, especially during this year of millennium celebration. Those who over-consumed alcohol or drugs yesterday and are hung over today may feel out of sorts, still trying to recover, and may not give all their attention to the safety aspects of their job. Their judgment and safety performance becomes impaired and the likelihood of an accident or injury to themselves or coworkers increases. Sometimes a personal or health problem persists. In most cases, the problem gets resolved. But if it is not resolved some people turn to alcohol or drugs. Even some prescription drugs can interfere with job performance. The individual cannot think clearly or becomes distracted. This can lead to accidents. Irresponsible consumption of drugs or alcohol not only jeopardizes the safety and health of the worker and coworkers but it can impact the employers business and affect the future of all families involved.
