Question of the Day By: Stan Sias

Internal and External Training; How do we pay for it? As the economy improves and we slowly get back to being busy and beyond in our design offices and manufacturing facilities, we will inevitably need to hire more staff. The same is true for those in the role of specifying our components as well as those in the city or county code enforcement. In almost every instance, these new people need to be trained and educated on industry standards, local code variations and the like. Who is going to do this training and how on earth are we going to pay for it?

Stan Sias - National Manager Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie

by the recipients and the relationships you will start developing are simply priceless. In offering to help train the students, specifiers and code officials you come to be viewed as a valuable resource to them. Who else knows more about the products you design and manufacture everyday? Scared to do it because someone may ask a question you can’t answer? I hope that doesn’t also prevent you from picking-up the phone when it rings in your office. What better way to reinforce for them the resource you really are when you get back to the group in the next day-or-so with an accurate answer. That’s also a great way to help them lock in your name and face in their resource library. The pay-off comes when they start sending clients your way because your company ‘knows how to do it the way they want it done’.

?

Internal training, be it for designers or plant personnel may well be handled completely in-house with the use of some easily accessible documentation and a little time shadowing the company lead in each department. The Structural Building Components Association (SBCA) makes Truss Technician Training pretty simple with online training modules available 24/7. Learning specific company nuances is a bit longer in the making as they often get learned as the situation arises. In the plant, the Quality Control Manual is a great place to start, as well as some hands on time with the saw and table leads. Obviously, the other option is to go out and steal someone from the competition. That is normally expensive, and what holds them back the next time more money is thrown their way? The truth is, both of these options are somewhat short-sighted. As was so eloquently stated recently during a SBCA webinar featuring Roger Axel, CBO from Minnesota and Rick Parrino, General Manager of Plum Building Systems in Iowa, Industry training and education really has to be a long-term, relationship building exercise. Whether you are trying to build a future labor pool or educate your local specifiers and code enforcement staff, the process must begin with you! Many of the local architects and engineers also cut staff during the last economic downturn. How many of the new interns have ever even heard of ANSI/TPI 1 or the BCSI? What about the local high schools, technical colleges and universities? It is up to us to offer to get out to their classrooms, offices or industry association meetings and introduce these staples of our industry to them. No one else is going to do this for you. Perhaps, if you’re lucky, you will have the assistance of another kind-hearted sole in your local SBCA Chapter, but if not, you’ll just have to do it on your own. Believe me; I have done plenty of these trainings over the years. I can honestly say that I have always gotten more out of these events than I ever put into them. The appreciation shown

For those of you that have adversarial relationships with your code officials and/or specifiers, it may be time to look in the mirror. Is your way really the only way or can there be some common ground reached with a little dialogue? In the long run it is better to lose a single battle and win the proverbial war. It will always be more beneficial to have a specifier reference ANSI/TPI 1, Chapter 2, than for you to spend days explaining Design Responsibilities to everyone involved in the project. Having the Engineer of Record and the Building Inspector pre-trained on the concepts and contents of the BCSI gives you extra eyes on the job to assure that your products are being properly erected, restrained and braced; items critical to long-term building performance and happy customers. It doesn’t say so in either BCSI or TPI 1, but the responsibility to pay it forward when it comes to industry training lies with each and every one of us. If we can’t take the time to mentor those that work with us and that will follow us, we have no right to complain when things don’t go our way. It could be that the designer, specifier or code official simply didn’t know what you expected them to know because you never took the time to explain it to them. If you want help with that training, give me a call. I, or one of my associates would be delighted to assist.

Competitive Advantage with Proper Labor Estimations The cost of manufacturing is always something every component manufacturer (CM) has to keep a close eye on to remain competitive in the market. The cost of material is set by the market conditions which the CM does not have a lot of control over; while the cost of labor can be influenced heavily by various factors such as best practices, rate of labor pay, and investment in automated equipment. A common practice by many CMs is to review labor cost estimation with an end-of-month or end-of-quarter financial comparison and adjusting the dollar per unit rate up or down to match the average. Speaking with many people within the truss industry, one can often hear the claim that their labor estimation is “good enough.” But is method of review and adjusting the average cost hurting your company? Might it actually be putting your company at a competitive disadvantage? First, let us think about what you are finding in your particular market. When bidding on various projects, how often are your estimated quotes close to your competition’s but you lost because a few point difference? Yes, there are the ones you lose because of a huge difference, but let us focus on the far more numerous losses for which there was minimal difference.

What if one or more of your competitors has a more accurate method of estimating their total cost? Would that not help explain some of the discrepancies for the individual pricing of projects? Part of the total cost is labor and if they have a more refined and accurate labor cost estimation, this can help explain this discrepancy. If your competitor has invested more time and effort in their labor cost estimation than your company, they may actually have a more consistent and accurate method of estimating their true cost on an individual project basis, rather than a grouping of multiple projects. They know it is a numbers game. It is a simple matter of having a higher percentage of individual project estimations with a higher rate of accuracy that should result in a higher rate of winning bids. By paying attention to a more accurate individual project’s cost they have a better understanding of what is and is not worthwhile for the winning bid. A method of labor estimation that has a higher rate of consistency for accurate labor estimation on an individual project naturally requires the investment of time and money. They probably viewed this investment like they would any investment for other types of assets, such as equipment, meaning it was worth it to them to get a slightly better competitive advantage.

New Website Offers Mobile Friendly Interface!

The website includes a product explorer which will allow you to search for specific equipment from the over 150 new & used products available. The listings will be comprehensive with great detail, many photos and an occasional video. Our goal is to provide the best resource in the industry for making profitable equipment selections for your company.

So what can your company do to obtain an estimation of labor that might be better than your current method? Well you have to start with the units on which you base your labor time. The most common methods are board footage (BF) and material cost. Both of these units are easily derived from the truss engineering programs. If you are one of the ones who uses BF for your labor estimation, how is it that a large agriculture project (high BF, low setup time) versus a custom home (low BF, high setup time) does not have a consistent ratio correlation of BF per hour rate? The same can be said about material cost versus labor cost. As material costs vary, it has nothing to do with the amount of labor needed in the projects. The exact same problems occur when trying to use linear footage or sales dollars. As the complexity of the project changes the factors that add labor are not properly reflected by these well-known units. None of them have any direct correlation to man hours so you end up using fudge factors to account for the discrepancies. (The article continues...) Testimonial of Consultation Services Over the years United Truss (a subsidiary of United Lumber) has done an outstanding job of providing our customers with quality trusses for their building needs. We reached a point, though, where our manual practices were restricting our capacity to not only serve existing clients, but also limited our ability to serve or target new customers. So, in the midst of automating our plant and updating our production/design practices, we chose to contact Todd. Innisfil, ON Canada Were we ever glad we had made the leap to request Todd’s consultation services. Todd’s consultation encompassed time and motion studies, best practices, the theory and practical components of lean manufacturing, which then enabled us to go back to the drawing board in terms of our pricing model. For years we had been pricing our products without actually and properly tracking our actual costs. Todd’s teachings showed that we could and should incorporate proper costing fundamentals into our model, and the icing was he showed us how to do this. Without a doubt we made the right decision to hire Todd Drummond, and once fully implemented, we have no doubt that United Truss will reach heights we had never thought possible under our old regime. Our entire staff, encompassing our production and design staff as well, were both impressed and thankful for the ideas and instructions that Todd brought to the table. Thanks Todd

LUMBER MARKET INTELLIGENCE L Softwood Framing Lumber Market Forecast & Trade Sreategies Since 1985 S

Matt Layman, Publisher TWITTER.com/Laymansguide | www.laymansguide.org | LinkedIn Group Layman’s Lumber Guide

Lumber Feeling Toppy OSB Feeling Bottomish • FDP Trends...

Feeling the Momentum Swings Trading the lumber market is much like flying an airplane or driving a car. Once the fundamentals are learned and practiced, the actual application requires a feel or gentle touch. Over steering, over correction or over reaction can be painful...or worse.

Lumber is losing upward momentum in conjunction with the FDP. OSB is feeling somewhat bottomish also mirroring its forecast.

• 6x10 Historicals...

The current lumber market feels like it is losing its upside summer rally momentum; getting toppy. OSB feels like it is preparing to exit its sideways trough; getting bottomish.

Lumber is a mixed bag over the next six weeks. OSB is historically very strong for the next four weeks.

Keep your position out of the ditch by making small corrections. Lumber trends are sideways to softer in August. No need to begin aggressive liquidation, rather maintain adequate supply. OSB trends higher in August then softens in September. Add a little anticipating a late summer pop.

• Sales/Production Ratios... Lumber mills have been leaning on order files for the last two weeks. One might assume that has thinned their footing. OSB mills are still falling short of selling production, however last week was much closer than the previous two weeks.

• Buying Strategy...Lumber: Trade it back to back; look for mills to start showing excesses. OSB: Expect mills to firm on anything better than break even sales/production ratios. Buy early this week to beat the August rally. • Selling Strategy...Lumber: Give a little on price to keep orders flowing. OSB: The next four weeks are historically bullish. Wait for buyers. Hold prices steady.
