Truss-to-Truss Hanger Selection.

Advertising Thomas McAnally 800-289-5627 x1

Just this week I received this call…“My Building Official has red-flagged and shut down one of the jobsites Stan Sias - National Manager Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie I’m supplying because he says that I have used the wrong hangers for my truss-to-truss connections. I checked the loads in the catalog but he still says I’m wrong! How can this be?”

Your Building Official (BO) may very well be correct! There is much more to proper hanger selection than just satisfying the demand load. First, there are all the geometry checks to see if the hanger actually fits on the supporting truss, and then fits the supported truss. There is the uplift load check if all nail holes are filled and there is the additional supported truss heel height checks to be sure all the fasteners go thru wood. Then there is the check to assure that the assumed fasteners are going into the assumed number of plies (and not 10d or 16d nails sticking out the back of a single ply girder). There is the additional check of the wood species for both the carrying and the carried members. Last and certainly not least is the required ANSI/TPI 1 cross-grain tension check (see ANSI/TPI 1-2007, Section 7.5.3). This tension perpendicular to grain check is often the controlling factor in the connection design. Let’s look at the Commentary to TPI 1 for what contributes to this specific design check. Remember, NDS provides no value for tension perpendicular to grain for lumber, it simply states that perp to grain applications should be avoided.

As you can see from the sidebar on the left, the first bullet limits the cross-sectional area for calculating the applied shear stress based on the “effective depth” of the member as opposed to the entire depth. The effective depth is the distance from the bottom of the carrying member to it’s centerline (shown as ‘c’ below) plus the distance from the centerline to the center of the uppermost fastener in the applied joist hanger (shown as ‘y’ below). The second bullet further limits the cross-sectional area for calculating the applied shear stresses to that area in two plies regardless of the number of plies in the girder. The third bullet gets even more restrictive when we get close to the end of the member. This additional restriction comes into play when we are installing hangers (or hurricane ties for that matter) within a distance equal to five times the depth of the member. Continued Page 4

As you can see, ANSI/TPI 1 places additional restrictions on these connections beyond what is required for other types of construction. Though as stated above, NDS says that cross-grain tension should be avoided, it is rarely if ever enforced out in the field. This is why the Simpson Strong-Tie catalog has the following note in its Important Information & General Notes, General Instructions to the Designer (CC-2015, p.18).

To remind the specifier of the importance of this design consideration, the following footnote appears under practically every load table within the Plated Truss Connector section of the catalog.

Let’s look at some examples of hangers subjected to the ANSI/TPI 1 Limits. We will utilize the Simpson Strong-Tie Connector Selector (CS) software to see hanger capacities with and without the limits being applied, and perhaps see exactly where the Building Official was coming from when he shut the job down. First, we’ll look at a connection geometry that has a two-ply girder truss carrying a common truss, a typical common to girder application. Let’s first view the results assuming no ANSI/TPI limits (aka the catalog results).

Parts House We can see that the CS software shows the LUS24 having a capacity of 830# download and 490# Uplift, which matches the catalog loads exactly. Now let’s assume that this connection is subjected to the ANSI/ TPI 1 provisions (after all, we are designing to the Standard, right?).

Assuming the Interior Zone, meaning we are beyond the five times the depth End Zone, what happens to the allowable hanger loads.

The same LUS24 hanger is now limited to the ANSI/TPI 1 prescribed 800# download instead of the 830# catalog load. In the End Zone it gets hit even harder!

Just for fun, look also at the LUS26 in the three screen shots above (using the blue underlines). Without the TPI 1 restrictions, the LUS26 would have 1075# download. The TPI 1 Interior Zone would limit it to 800# and the End Zone limits it to 400#. Maybe the Building Official was on to something. Do you utilize automatic hanger selection in your Truss Design software or the power of the Connector Selector software or are you still utilizing catalog loads when specifying truss-to-truss connections? The Simpson Strong-Tie Connector Selector software is a free download at http://goo.gl/ZPPf8m. Thanks for reading. SS

Excellent Customer Service and Productive Equipment Provide a Decisive Advantage Outstanding customer service and the productivity and durability of Alpine Equipment have enabled Warman Truss to grow consistently since its founding 17 years ago. Managing Partner Roy Bedient focuses on optimizing plant efficiency through equipment innovations and effective preventive maintenance programs. Since its establishment in 1998, Warman Truss has relied on the productivity and reliability of Alpine equipment to help build a highly successful business. Located in Warman, Saskatchewan, Warman Truss serves all of Saskatchewan and Alberta. The company has also completed work in Manitoba and British Columbia. Warman Truss produces standard and custom-made truss systems and I-joists for residential, commercial and agricultural buildings, as well as a select group of retail dealers. The firm’s portfolio also includes several allied building and construction industry businesses. Managing Partner Roy Bedient oversees all aspects of the production process. He has watched Warman Truss grow steadily to its current size of about 90 employees. The plant typically operates two shifts, and production has increased every year, even during the downturn. “Our business model is straightforward – we focus on what we know and do well,” said Bedient. “Service is at the forefront, and we have maintained many of our core customers from the first day they started with us. I’m a firm believer that if you serve customers well, they won’t go anywhere else.” Bedient installed Alpine equipment when the plant opened and is one of Alpine’s most loyal customers. Warman Truss now has 10 pieces of Alpine equipment, and Bedient credits Alpine’s equipment and strong technical support for helping the business grow. “We are one of the province’s leading truss suppliers and take pride in our state-of-the-art cutting and assembly equipment and software,” pointed out Bedient. “Alpine has always been a great fit for us, and we like the fact the equipment is well made, user-friendly, easy to maintain and has reliable software. The company is very responsive whenever we need support.” In late 2014, Warman Truss installed the ALS 276 Motion Control Upgrade on its eight-year-old saw, and employees are pleased with the results. “The saw is now 10 to 15 percent quicker and has been running smoothly since the upgrade,” said Bedient. “The new drives helped as well. The saw usually runs at least 12 hours a day, and we anticipate the upgrade will extend its life by at least five years.” According to Bedient, the upgrade process itself took only about a day and a half. “We like the truss-by-truss cutting and optimize-by-cost features. We don’t do a lot of beveling, but it’s nice to know it’s there if we need it.” To keep its equipment running smoothly, Warman Truss follows a rigorous preventive maintenance program, which is reviewed and updated regularly. “Our philosophy is to address issues and fix them right away before they become bigger problems,” he emphasized. “We have a simple maintenance program stressing cleanliness throughout the plant and make sure our equipment is as clean as possible. We also follow the maintenance recommendations in Alpine’s equipment manuals.” To further enhance plant productivity, Warman Truss installed Alpine’s eShop software about a year ago. “The program has increased our assembly and cutting productivity by about 30 percent,” noted Bedient. “The software has greatly enhanced our overall efficiency and enabled us to optimize our staffing levels.” PHONE: 800-289-5627

Testimonials of Consultation Services at http://todd-drummond.com/todds-profile/ InteFrame Components LLC Tom Manning – General Manager Nampa, Idaho In 2009, InteFrame was created by the joining of two former truss companies. Together they combined the best parts of their processes and became what is now known as InteFrame. Coupled with many years of experience and the ambition to be more than just your average supplier, InteFrame has become the largest truss supplier in Idaho. We continue to expand and improve upon the strong foundations of our past while always staying focused on the future. Since our conception, year to year sales have grown tremendously. With this new growth, our need for capacity has also increased. Our first impulse was to purchase new equipment to fulfill this growing requirement, but after many discussions our company took the approach to focus attention on the current manufacturing process. InteFrame has always been attentive on lean manufacturing practices and continually works daily to put these practices into place. To validate, provide new ideas, and possibly increase the effectiveness of these practices, InteFrame looked to Todd Drummond and his formal experience. His methods for training led our group down a path that touched on every aspect of our business. The consultation not only looked at the manufacturing area, but focused attention on our sales, design, and accounting methods. The daily routine was divided with the mornings being utilized as Todd’s “fact finding” time of our company’s practices. The afternoons were constructed of training sessions that were serious and methodical, all being guided by Todd’s understanding of the fact finding session from earlier in the day/week. Todd’s insights and suggestions were based upon his assessments of our company’s practices and performance, as well as being guided by best practices he has observed through the numerous other consultations he has been a part of. The end result is our company has a much clearer understanding of areas we can improve. Todd’s consultation confirmed some of our own ideas and challenged us with new ones enriching our internal processes and creating better efficiencies. Where Todd challenged us he provided the why, how, and what to successfully complete and implement the change. Through better management practices, guided by Todd, our company was able to increase capacity in our manufacturing area. Our team has many decades of experience in the component industry, and we all still gained valuable new ideas and practices from Todd’s consultation. Our investment in his services has made a real difference in our processes and methods of doing business. Most weeks Todd’s information and comments still populate most of our meetings. His consultation has allowed an increase to profits and is highly worth the investment. PHONE: 800-289-5627

North American Softwood Lumber Market Evaluation

Lumber & Housing Market Expectations Cooling In Front of the Approaching Bull Market

Thought Provoking and Inspirational

Common Sense When a bully says he is going to beat you up, and he has a previous proven history of making good on his word, it seems prudent to avoid provoking him. Wouldn't you agree? It seems logical that one would try to avoid confrontations with bullies. Near the top of the list would be, "Do not say things that might embarrass or challenge the bully, and provoke him to wrath." He wants a fight and doesn't need much of a reason. For example, calling a him fat, or telling her she is stupid and ugly, or saying he is poor and smelly... or broadcasting annoying political and social propaganda over loud speakers 24 hours a day...might be unwise. Bullies seek power through abusive and violent language or behavior and are provoked by depriving them of power. Ignoring a bully only causes him to seek more attention. What bullies want is to believe that there is hope for relief from their pain and suffering and anger...not patronized or punished. Our civilization, if you can call it that, creates bullies. We can also stop it any time. It's a choice. Meanwhile, bullies cannot be allowed to run loose, killing people because they get their feelings hurt. That's why I have a conceal carry permit. ...ML

If you are confused and skeptical...join the club. Historical stock market volatility, housing statistics coming out of both sides of the mouth [home ownership down, rents higher, home inventories declining, sales prices rising], strong lumber demand, equally as strong production. Housing sucks because our kids are afraid to invest in one. This week's Layman's Guide "Temperature Check" survey was overwhelmingly consistent. Buyers are adequately covered and will use strong September sales to liquidate inventories. Fall and winter lumber demand expectations are weakening with the stock market. Business "has been" good, however the next six months are uncertain. Producers admit over production and are looking for the other guy to do something about it. Weakness in the global economy has tempered the outlook for the balance of 2015 and early 2016. The combination of lower lumber prices, renewed interest from China, and production curtailments will inspire speculative buying this fall. Prepare for a SIGNIFICANT reversal this fall after this aggressive inventory liquidation creates a premature under bought condition. Looking Forward...ML!

For many companies, properly staffing and retaining employees to meet their needs is a never-ending struggle. Let’s summarize what human resources gurus require years of training to understand and disseminate it to the masses for better results.

Let us start by understanding some basic truths about productivity. If there is an inadequate output and/or quality issue, then the two leading factors are usually not enough employees and/or poorly skilled employees. Some companies cannot attract enough new employees, or when they do they have poor retention of employees, which both lead to an employee shortage. As a result of low employee retention, a company’s Todd Drummond staff is often poorly trained or not skilled enough, which leads to many mistakes. Todd Drummond Consulting Industrial engineers are taught that most skilled positions take an average of three years www.todd-drummond.com of experience to reach full potential. Experienced workers not only produce more units per hour but also higher quality units with fewer mistakes. So, how can any company reach maximum output if it has a high percentage of new employees with very little experience? The answer is simple: It cannot. If most companies actually retained their new hires, most would be fully staffed with long-term employees within just three years. Some think money is the number-one way to retain good employees; however, this is a mistake. Many human resources surveys over the years have shown the same results; when asked about the most effective motivation for keeping employees satisfied, survey results rank contributing factors as follows: 1st. 2nd. 3rd. 4th. 5th. 6th. 7th. 8th. 9th. 10th.

Appreciation of work well done Being part of the discussions Help with personal matters Job security Good wages Interesting work Promotion and growth Management loyalty to employees Good working conditions Tactful discipline

Notice how good wages is positioned 5th place in this ranking? Similar surveys all find the same results: Wages are normally the 4th or 5th in a list regarding employee satisfaction. However, if a company has a high turnover rate and high employee vacancy, the number one reason is usually the company is not paying the correct market wages for the given positions. There are two very distinct aspects of employee pay rates. 1st. Market Wages • Employer’s responsibility to attract and retain the right employees • Potential employees will not apply for the position if not met. • Employee will eventually leave for better-paying positions with other companies if not met. • Employee performance will suffer if not met. 2nd. Employee Wage Needs • Employee’s responsibility to meet their own obligations, not the employer’s • Employees will eventually find other employment to meet monetary needs • Employers will find other employees to fill the position at market wages

To meet the first two most important things employees desire—appreciation of work well done and being part of the discussions—a manager needs to actually take the time to let employees know how they are doing and what is going on. To put it simply, managers need to praise the good work employees do, communicate what good work is, and Hain 20' Powered Measuring System communicate what the company is doing overall. As part of the communication process, many are surprised that, when •Adapts to Any Saw talking about future investments in equipment or other mundane things managers would normally never discuss with •Left or Right Hand Operation •Feet & Inches System (Stops at 12” employees, employees respond with a great deal of enthusiasm because the managers took the time and displayed an Centers) or Inches System (Stops at 10” appreciation of them being part of the discussion. The “being part of the discussion” aspect is normally the one thing most managers fail to do the most. Every company has its own unique culture and way of doing business. In the end, it is about making the best net profit possible in order to survive and thrive. Without profit, there would be no business. And no matter how many investments are made in automation, employees play a key role in making everything work. But take heart: Wage expenses can actually decrease as a percentage of sales if productivity increases. That is quite common for the best companies that display the best net profit: These well-performing companies display very low employee turnover, few vacancies, and performance at the highest productivity with very few mistakes.

Safety First! Safety Meeting Topics From State Fund CA.

Noise - Hear Today Gone Tomorrow Most workers take good hearing for granted. Hearing loss can happen so gradually that it can go unnoticed until it’s too late. Then, even a hearing aid may not help. Some assume hearing loss is the unavoidable result of getting older, yet most hearing loss is due to noise over a lifetime. While loss of hearing may result from a single exposure to a noise or explosion, such traumatic losses are rare. Most cases of hearing loss begin gradually in frequencies slightly above that of human speech and then subtly spread to lower and higher frequencies. Hearing loss can disrupt job performance, cause stressrelated problems, increased heart rate, fatigue, irritability, tension and lead to unnecessary accidents or injuries on the job. The workplace can be very noisy. Both the amount of noise and the duration of exposure determine the ability to damage hearing. Workers may be exposed to noise from many sources: equipment, vehicles, or tools, to name a few. Any of these things can damage hearing when exposure accumulates over extended periods of time. How can you tell if work is too loud and may be causing hearing damage? It’s too loud if: •

You have to raise your voice to be heard.

You can’t hear someone less than two feet away without shouting.

Speech around you sounds muffled or dull after you leave a noisy area.

You have ringing in your ears after exposure to noise.

What can employers do to prevent their workers from developing hearing problems? Good planning can prevent problems caused by excessive noise exposure. Noise reduced at its source should be the first consideration. Employers should invest in noise-controlled equipment. When purchasing, employers can ask vendors if there is a "quiet" model or a noise-reducing option, such as enclosed or acoustically lined vehicular cabs and equipment. Work schedules can be adjusted so that exposure to high noise levels does not occur for the entire work day. This allows a noise recovery period to be part of the work shift. Equally important is the use of personal protection devices, such as ear plugs and ear muffs. Employers should provide training on the protection devices available and the effects of noise on hearing if workers do not use the protection. Training should include the fit, use, and care of any hearing protection device. Employers can’t always prevent noise, but they can lessen the chance of workers experiencing hearing loss by having them follow established safety procedures and enforcing the use of proper hearing protection. Don’t risk losing a worker’s hearing on the job. Silence may be a great thing, but not when its permanent.
