Question of the Day... What can be done to help eliminate hanger gaps when attaching end jacks, or common trusses, at 90 degrees to the girder truss?

Stan Sias

This month’s installment is a good question with a really easy solution. I was on another job site recently when I noticed a series of small (about 8’ long) end jacks attached to a two-ply hip girder, with rather serious gaps between the end of the jacks and the face of the girder in the hanger seats. I asked the framer about the condition and he proclaimed that the end jacks were not all the same length. I explained how difficult that would be to do in a modern truss manufacturing plant and asked if he had a string line. He wanted to know how a string line was going to reduce the gaps in the hanger connections, or make all the jacks ‘the same length’. Pulling a string line spaced on the back face of the girder truss showed the girder to be bowed away from the end jacks by about 5/8” at the center of the girder. The framer said that must have been the way it came from the shop because they didn’t do anything to cause it to bow. I asked if they did anything to prevent it from bowing during installation and he looked at me perplexed. He had never done anything like that before. The easiest possible way to eliminate the potential for hanger gaps when attaching trusses at 90 degrees to the girder is to place a short length of metal strap into the hanger seat prior to setting the carried truss. This piece is normally only 16–18” long and wraps up the back side of the carrying members. Placing these straps at 6–8’ on-center will generally eliminate the main cause of hanger gaps at girder trusses. I suggested to him that while setting the trusses, perhaps he could do something as simple as placing a tie-strap on the few jack trusses that they used to align and plumb the girder (normally placed in line with where the common truss Top Chord Temporary Lateral Restraints would be placed or about 6–8’ on-center) would eliminate the tendency of the girder to want to bow during the installation of all the jack truss hangers. In his case, the jack trusses were supported by 2x4 face-mount hangers, each requiring four nails into the girder. When we calculated the probable number of hammer blows the girder had been subjected to just while the hangers were being installed (4 nails x 4 hammer blows x 13 installed hangers), the otherwise unrestrained girder was hit over 200 times, not including the nails installed to fasten the plies together. Yes, possibly the framer did in fact do something to cause the girder to bow. Perhaps a specification for a few of these straps on the Truss Placement Diagram would prevent this kind of hanger mis-installation in the future. Otherwise, a specification requiring lateral restraints and diagonal bracing of the girder bottom chord is in order to help keep it in its Correction: assumed location and perfectly straight to receive the same length end jacks or common trusses framing into the opposite face. Thanks for reading.

Now Entering the Work Zone: Building A Library Anna L. Stamm Director of Communications and Marketing Component Manufacturing Advertiser.

The astute observer on our website may have noticed some new links appearing. We should also have a little construction sign up though – the new section is very much a work in progress!

Where is that article? From time to time, we’re asked to forward individual PDF copies of articles by our authors. While I’m always pleased to send you what you need, delivered straight to your inbox, I understand that sometimes finding it yourself is quicker than asking for it. Especially with the terrific response we’ve received for Frank Woeste’s July article, “Rethinking Ways to Encourage Permanent Truss Bracing,” we’ve decided that it’s time to post articles separately. Regular readers of The Advertiser will be able to snag copies of pieces they would like to have and share – and casual visitors to the site will find complete issues as well as single articles.

2000 Alpine AutoMill RS Component Saw Alpine AutoMill RS model 344, five-blade, computerized component saw. From the OEM literature: sets up in 2 to 19 seconds, using a touch screen for ease of operation. Five-head automated component saw works in semi-automated control via touchscreen input. It has 19 axes of automated movement, diagnostics, auto management reporting. What about those supporting documents? But why stop there? As many people know, Frank has been working on issues affecting our industry for decades, and he has many articles to his credit. Especially in the case of his work on bracing, there’s a lot of valuable information to be shared with a larger community. And it is in everyone’s interest to share information, grow the knowledge base, increase understanding across professions, and support the industry and its members. From hyperlinks to PDFs, there’s a whole lot of good stuff that should be available online, so we’re starting to see how we can help with that effort. When will it be ready? There are two answers to that question. First, starting with the July issue, we’ve already posted the individual articles. August articles will be posted mid-month, and we’ll also look into posting articles from earlier issues of The Advertiser. The second answer to that question is: soon. Because the item of most interest (so far) has been that bracing article, we’re starting with additional resources which connect to that topic. The “resources” section of the library is something that will be even more developed by the time you are reading this column (compared to when I am writing this). You’re welcome to stop by the website and check it out, but please don’t be alarmed if it still looks like a work in progress. It is! When will it D-O-N-E?

Now that is definitely my favorite question – and I am happy to say that it will never be done! No good resource is ever completed. There are always more things to add, more avenues to travel, and more bridges to build. What’s more, we welcome your feedback and input on what else you would like to see in our online resources. The open forum concept in this magazine will extend to the website, and we will endeavor to be responsive to your requests. Of course, there will be hiccups along the way – from technological constraints to unintended consequences (and controversies) – but we’re giving it a go anyway.

Libraries are like life that way – there’s always something more to learn. PHONE: 800-289-5627

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE.

THE HUNDEGGER TURBO DRIVE SAW IS A FAST, ACCURATE AND VERSATILE, FULLY AUTOMATED LINEAR SAW SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO CUT STRUCTURAL COMPONENT PARTS.

Hundegger continues to stretch the cutting capabilities of our industry by providing a single saw with options that can perform basic drilling, milling and printing operations in addition to 4 -axis cutting.

Hardly another “pretty face”, the TURBO Drive is a solid evolution of the popular SC Series saws. This workhorse, like all of Hundegger’s production saws, benefits from their experience learned from a wide variety of wood cutting and milling applications from over 4,700 saws to date. Specific to our wood component industry, the TURBO Drive has been thoroughly developed for world-wide customers prior to its introduction to the US. Regardless of your cutting application, be it I-Joist, dimensional 2x lumber, or any variety of EWP, we have the experience and equipment to efficiently bring your job to market.

ÜÜÜ°7 `/ÀÕÃÃ-ÞÃÌi ðV ÊUÊÇÈx Çx£ ä

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.

FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU

So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. Where We Came From Because I’ve been receiving great feedback from readers (thanks for that), in my July article I also welcomed suggestions of topics. One reader stepped forward with an idea which, as I thought more about it, became the start of this month’s piece on how far we’ve come as an industry.

other companies scrambled to match what the Little brothers had produced. They single-handedly put several plate suppliers on the map with the software Some of us have been around this industry longer than others, so solutions they invented. The software we can remember some of the history that has made our industry what it grew this industry to heights most didn’t think possible. is today. Now, before you begin thinking I am going to expose Ancient Another genius-laden company was OnLine Data. The Horowitz Aliens as the ones who kick-started the truss industry, have no fear – I family (Dan and Camilla) created a piece of software that led the industry am only going back to the middle of the last century. (We can save the for more than a decade. It started as software running on a UNIX main other for another time.) frame. At first, it was simply a cutting program, but soon it evolved into When I look back, I am struck by some of the grand geniuses who an industry-leading component design package. Back in the day, you put all of us on our current path – a path we now take for granted. I had to dial in and place your telephone handset in a cradle modem to remember the days before the awesome software we have today. I know, use the software. It was awesome, but it could be slow depending upon I know, many of you have heard me rant about the dumbing down of the how many users were logged in at any given time. So, some of us would industry. Ironically, the terrific software available to the industry today call in at odd times (early in the morning….like 3 am) to get the fastest has a negative side effect too. Users don’t have to work as hard to get processing time. answers, and many do not know as much about the engineering behind the output. Through my years in the industry, we have advanced from hand-drawn profiles and placement plans, to magnetic strip calculators for cutting, to software run on UNIX systems, to the first DOS software, and eventually to the industry where we are today. But someone had to write all that code that became the stepping stones to now…..stepping stones shaped like 5 ¼” floppy discs. Key in this development were Frank and Paul Little. These guys developed code that ended up being widely used by several industry software providers. Truswal, Tee-LOK, Cleary, and CompuTrus were a few that used source code developed by the Little brothers. They all used a similar line input to describe the truss. It was fast, and, once it was learned, the user never wanted to switch to anything else. Those guys were awesome! They gave many of us our first experience in the daily use of computers to design trusses. The programs did so many things. If you could describe it with the character library, then it would analyze the truss. It didn’t always pass the design and it didn’t always plate the joints, but it would perform analysis as fast as anything on the market. Because of some of the shortcomings though, we all still had to learn more math. These days, how to plate by hand and how to evaluate shear and bending through calculation are things most designers don’t know and don’t need to know, but that wasn’t the case then. That software was the gateway to all we have now. As a testament to their genius, the Little brothers are still a much sought after commodity. In fact, a lot of really smart programmers have worked hard trying to unravel what these guys did in such a seemingly effortless way. They have remained as relevant as always. These two men had a special way of approaching a problem and finding a solution. I spoke with a friend who has a copy of code that the Little brothers wrote for his company for a very specific product line. That bit of software helped his company become the leader in a market segment that needed someone to provide solid engineered solutions. There is no telling what the value of the software meant to his business, and to the industry, as CARL SCHOENING V P B U S I N E S S D E V E L O P M E N T E A G L E M E TA L P R O D U C T S 12300 F O R D R OA D, S U I T E 110 | DA L L A S, T X 75234 carl @ eagle m e tal . co m | 9 7 2 . 3 5 0 . 9 8 0 7 PHONE: 800-289-5627

At the time, computer hardware started making advances too. Soon we had Crememco UNIX systems sitting in our offices with terminals at every desk. This was leaps and bounds better. We were back to normal work schedules. The Horowitz family had great insight. They hired awesome people to support the product. Kathy, Norm, Cecilia, and Murleen come readily to mind. They taught me more than I ever wanted to know about computers (and thankfully I have forgotten most of it). But, OnLine saw the trend in desktop computing before many and created a way for their UNIX software to run in the new DOS environment. GENIUS! Now we had color monitors and local and networked desktops. It was Awesome. The speed of that first IBM 386 desktop seemed incredible! Then the 486 came out and we were once again amazed. Sure, my current smart phone has more computing power than those old computers, but for that time we were blazing a new path. OnLine had the first 3D modeling layout software that I ever used. Now we could see interferences. We could solve plane issues. And, we could design all kinds of trusses that had never been attempted previously. Sometimes it was tedious because you had to place the analog nodes, pitch break joints, and members where you wanted them on a complicated truss, but we could do it and perform structural analysis. For trusses you designed a lot, you could create your own floor or roof truss patterns. By entering a simple code, it would auto-input the rest of the instructions for that truss, which was a big time saver. OnLine soon expanded by offering the first management software designed for truss manufacturers. Dan was a component manufacturer and basically wrote the spec for what he wanted and thought others would want as well. It was powerful and many of the functions in today’s management software offerings come from ideas spawned in the first piece of software. These two groups developed software in decidedly different ways. They both solved problems and helped move the truss industry forward, and I hope everyone will acknowledge the work these companies did to bring us to where we are today. (And hopefully we’ll see more ground breaking work appear in our industry that takes us to the next level.) So, next time you’re cleaning out an old box, see something unfamiliar, and then realize it’s a floppy disc – remember these software pioneers and give thanks to them, and be glad that cradle modems don’t exist anymore.

The actual payment to employees for increased performance is truly one aspect that many managers may not understand, especially regarding how to get the most bang for their buck. For example, why give equal dollars to personnel with varying degrees of skills and responsibilities? This payout article does not pertain to bonus programs. For many, knowing the difference between a bonus plan and an incentive program is still an issue, and there is a big difference between the two. To understand what entails an effective incentive, please refer to “Effective Incentive Programs for Every Group” on my newsletter Web page: http://todd-drummond.com/newsletter/ Any task should be viewed within the concept of keeping it simple. However, with the development of labor-tracking programs such as MiTek MVP™ and others, why not create reports that are complex in calculations but simple to understand? You could easily weigh the employee payouts that would benefit each person the most for their given responsibilities and skills. Then, with a simple push of a button, you have an automated incentive calculated payment report that you can use to get the most bang for each buck!

There are basically three different key options that must be decided. Here is a simplified breakdown you should consider when creating your group’s incentive report. Should I include the negative results of projects as a negative for the total? What this means is that any group or individual that fails to meet the minimum for a given project has the negative results reduce the total payout by that negative amount (not recommended!). People cannot always meet the minimal, sometimes through no fault of their making.

More than one CM has mentioned how frustrated they are with MVP ™ labor configurations. Some use it only for scheduling, others gave up on using the program because of their frustrations, and some have delayed implementation. When you do not have the proper labor configurations, labor efficiencies will remain unknown. Allow TDC to help you!

for details.

This will cause endless conflicts. If your company were to use this option, you would be creating a disincentive and a lot of negative emotions. Basing the incentive payout on the cost of labor savings or efficiency ratings. Trying to explain the cost-of-labor savings to employees on a job-by-job basis can be convoluted at best. Also, a discussion of labor cost savings opens the door for arguing about pay rates versus estimated bidding labor costs. However, showing a consistently expected efficiency rating, such as time standards, has proven time and again to be the easier concept for understanding and acceptance. Think of time standards as you would a speed odometer showing expected minutes versus actual. The faster, the better, and it’s very easy to understand. (refer to the incentive article mentioned above). Weighted towards employee pay rates. Let’s assume you have $100 to divide between three personnel who completed numerous batch runs on the assembly table as a single build team. Do you divide it up equally between all three, or would you rather offer more to the leader? All groups of people have higher skilled personnel with more responsibilities; they are normally paid more per hour, so why not offer them a higher percentage of the pie? How would this be done in a generated report? Simply weigh it based on employee pay rates, and those who are paid more per hour would retain a higher percentage of the payout. The math is complicated but easily doable via a computer-generated report. TDC’s recommended incentive report payout is based on efficiency ratings that are derived from time standards and weighted to higher employee pay rates. In addition, TDC absolutely does not recommend using negative results counted against their totals. By far, your employees will find this to be the most rewarding program you could offer for higher performance. The most Comprehensive and Refined consulting service in the component industry. Don’t Forget! You Saw it in the

What kind of message are you sending your customers? It happens. And it will happen again. Time after time, truss fabricators are faced with the awkwardness of addressing a customer’s complaint call. Fabricating a custom product to meet specifications has its challenges. There are codes to follow. Loads to verify, configuration to consider, special instructions for deliveries on lots that are so small the trusses should have been airlifted. Communications between the specifiers/purchaser and the truss plant has its entire unique set of challenges. Maybe due to the complexity of the product, many issues, items, and details have to be considered. Checks and balances have to be made on an ongoing basis to insure a successful product is produced and delivered. If you were the supplier of the trusses in the photo, would your explanation be “it’s because of the method we use to stack the trusses that we didn’t see the missing plate”? If your company does not visually or mechanically verify that every connector plate is installed correctly, then you are missing an important part of the truss manufacturer’s responsibilities per code. At the very least, the stacker, the most important person in the truss operations, the last one to see the trusses before the customer does, should be methodically inspecting ALL connectors. It’s their job to verify the work is done. It’s your responsibility. This truss was photographed on a jobsite just prior to the workers lifting it with a crane. With a missing plate, the truss could have collapsed while lifting, possibly injuring or killing a worker. A connector was never applied to the face. Analyzing the other trusses in the pack, it was determined that this truss was the third truss build in the run. This side was down on the table and was supposed to be back plated at the gantry. No plate teeth marks were evident, however. Fortunately, someone noticed the error at the jobsite. But, in addition to being an unsuitable and unsafe component, how much did it damage the company’s reputation too? Forward Thinking. Respecting the Past. Ask most people about the lumber industry and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: ● technologically advanced, ● sustainable logging, ● small log harvesting, ● green lumber products, ● commitment to healthy communities, and ● ecologically-minded forest management When people talk about Vaagen Brothers, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Working in the forests of Washington for more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. August Recess: An Opportune Time to Meet with Your Members of Congress Every August, federal lawmakers take a recess from their work in Washington, D.C. and use the month to visit constituents at home. For our industry, the recess (which goes through Sept. 6) provides an opportunity to schedule a meeting with members of Congress and their staff to discuss issues that affect us, or even better, invite them to come visit your facilities. Due to the November elections, this summer’s recess will be one of the longest summer recess periods ever, so there is lots of time to make those connections. AWC’s Recommended “Recess Game Plan” Call your federal legislators’ local offices now to set up a meeting for when they are near your town. Or, as suggested, invite them (and key policy staff) to one of your facilities for a tour so that they can see (first-hand) what your company does, meet with some of your employees, and better understand the value your company brings to the community. Regardless of whether you plan a meeting with your legislators or arrange a site visit, here are some important issues affecting wood product manufacturers that need to be addressed in Congress that you might want to raise: •

Timber Innovation Act. The U.S. Senate, led by Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Mike Crapo (R-ID), introduced the Timber Innovation Act (S. 2892). A House companion bill (H.R. 5628) has also been introduced by Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-WA) and Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA). Both bills would: o Establish performance-driven research and development program for advancing tall wood building construction in the United States; o Authorize the Tall Wood Building Prize Competition through the U.S. Department of Agriculture annually for the next five years; o Codify the Forest Service’s Wood Innovation Grant program and expand it to facilitate Centers of Excellence and provide grants to states to fund education, outreach, research and development, including education and assistance for architects and builders, which will accelerate the use of wood in tall buildings. o The House bill also includes language allowing the Wood Innovation Grant program to support proposals to use and/or retrofit existing sawmill facilities in areas with high unemployment to produce mass timber materials.

Carbon Neutrality of Biomass. Wood products manufacturers use biomass from manufacturing and sustainable forestry operations to produce energy, providing significant carbon-reducing benefits to the environment. In fact, on average, 78% of the energy from AWC-member facilities is generated from carbon-neutral biomass. EPA’s current and proposed greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations fail to recognize the carbon neutrality of the use of biomass for energy or distinguish biogenic fuel carbon emissions from fossil fuel emissions. Tell members of Congress that policies should recognize that the use of these residuals for energy is carbon neutral because if left unused would have ultimately released CO2 and methane to the atmosphere anyway.

Energy Bill. Both the House and Senate have passed energy bills (H.R. 8 and S. 2012), but the two are very different and need to be reconciled. There are a number of provisions in both bills that the wood products industry supports. In the House bill, AWC supports the building energy code product neutrality provisions, which would return the Department of Energy to its congressionallyauthorized role as a ‘technical advisor’ and not using its position to advocate for particular products or technologies in building energy codes. AWC supports the Senate bill provisions that recognize the carbon benefits of biomass energy and require consistent policies across all departments and agencies, as well as recognition of multiple green building rating systems.

Congress will get back to work in Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 6. In the meantime, and while they’re home, it’s important that they hear from you and your opinions on key wood products manufacturing issues so they’re at the forefront of their minds when they pivot back to legislative responsibilities in D.C. There will be few remaining working days left for Congress when they return – NOW is the perfect time to communicate our priority issues to them. So, make your next step a call to your Senators’ and Representatives’ local legislative offices to schedule an appointment or invite your Senators and House members for a facility visit. You can also visit legislators’ websites to find public events to attend today and use AWC’s Grow the Vote website to help find federal legislator contact information. AWC staff can also assist you in preparing for your meeting or visit. Go to: bit.ly/AWCVote. Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC). PHONE: 800-289-5627

I Beg to Differ...This Is STILL the Lumber Business. And, the MOST Important Buying Decision..."Buy Now or Delay?" I read this week that this is no longer the lumber business, rather it is the construction business. Absolutely, the traditional contractor yard wears many hats, however for sawmills, lumber brokers, wholesale lumber distributors, wood preservers, component manufacturers, importers, exporters, and lumber market analysts...the 250 year old, 50+billion board foot, North American lumber business with its hundreds of thousands of employees is alive, well and thriving. Lumber is unquestionably a contractor yard's single largest category. Buyers have hundreds of lumber SKU's to manage. When considering each purchase, multiple decisions are contemplated to determine need and solution. How many orders do I have for this item? How many more do I expect to get and when? How long before I run out? Which suppliers make the items I need? Which suppliers can mix the items I need? How long will it take to replenish? Is transportation an issue? When will I have to pay? Do I have the money to pay? How much credit line do I have with each supplier? Before that first question has been answered, a more important question should be considered. The one that makes and saves the money. The one that makes a lumber buyer a force to be reckoned with. That question is, "What is the lumber market doing?" If rising, quick action is required before the next price increase. If falling, a few days delay to take advantage of price declines is the decision. The lumber buyer must know what the market is doing every day of the year, being prepared to buy that day, or delay. "When to buy?" is the most important buying decision. There are two ways to approach the lumber market. One is speculatively...looking for the big moves... accumulating and liquidating inventory at precise seasonal times. For many, that is too risky or too expensive. For others, that thrill is what drives them. Whether participating or not, monitoring speculators is the lumber buyer's responsibility.

Another strategy, suitable for all, is to eliminate speculation and risk. Maintain inventory turns and cash flow. The objective is to take advantage of price volatility. Most lumber buyers do not take into account the dollar value of purchasing immediately or delaying. I'm not talking about a significant delay. Not at all. I'm talking about 3-4 days, a week at most. In declining markets, once realizing a need to buy...wait to purchase until Friday. In a rising market, always buy the day the need is realized. It's quite a simple strategy. Take the "4-week 2x4 & OSB Challenge". For the next four weeks, just these two items, follow the suggested buying strategy found on the specie page you buy. The forecasts with buying and selling strategies will make and save your company money every week...an average of $5 per thousand board/square feet...each week, each truckload. Remember, these strategies require no market speculation; no extra inventory build up; no additional cash outlay; no risk; no increased inventory turns. Literally the only thing necessary is buy before Tuesday noon in rising markets or delay until Friday during falling markets. When sudden needs arise in between, buy them immediately in rising markets and delay the purchase until Friday in falling markets. I will do the forecasting and market analysis. You execute the orders and make the money. We will review in four weeks. Would you like to participate? Email to: matt@laymansguide.org Company... Name... Email...

Lumber Market HOTWASH Summary & Evaluation

It's ALL About the Buyers

Over-Heated Emotion

I don't mean to slight the importance of lumber producers. Without them there would be no lumber business. However, without buyers, there would be no need to produce. Hence, my primary focus is on the buy side. That is what drives every industry. In addition to the seasonal trend analyses, long and short term forecasts, it is imperative that we be aware of and in sync with, the emotional state of the collective lumber buying community. Our lumber market moves, up or down, on the day-to-day impulses of just-pasttime, just-in-time and speculative buying co-operative. The collective emotional state of these buyers determines market momentum. Market momentum determines direction. Together, direction and momentum determine price movement. My job is to present a lumber market forecast then overlay the current emotional influences to determine price direction. Are the buyers in a state of feverish lethargy & rampant apathy? Are they experiencing irrational exuberance? Are they confused? Are they focused? Are they distracted? Are they subconsciously or consciously accumulating or liquidating inventory? Each day, you help create that collective buyer emotion that makes the lumber market move. Let's take a look.

After almost two months of maintaining a vigil on inventory, buyers are weary of chasing down lumber. This strategy has not been in expectation of lower prices or a radical decline in demand, rather the belief that summer demand would decline just enough to make supply at least adequate. The error in judgement has been waiting too long to cover mid summer needs. My recommendation before summer started was not to liquidate inventory, but to maintain adequate supply...for this very reason. Prices were forecasted to rise while just-in-time and just-past-time buyers absorbed mill production. Now what? This week we are seeing a wholesale rush to replenish. The last minute bunch is looking ahead. That emotion is causing the level headed buyers to take on a little "insurance" wood and leading brokers to feel comfortable expanding long positions...all when jobsite this hitting the wall. Jobs are being delayed. Your inventory and new purchases will expand with this pent up demand. I believe this is the mid-summer push that creates a temporary over bought condition. Note on the graph that this week begins the period of declining demand...weeks #30-52.

•Weather: Looking at the long range forecast, this sweltering heat does not subside until the third week of August and the next two weeks look to be the hottest of the summer. Builders have shifted gears this week, delaying framing packages and truss deliveries. The bottle neck is here until mid August. •Price Summary: SYP, SPF and OSB...staples in the lumber industry caught a hearty round of buying early this week. This is an exhaustion buy...tired of chasing...wanting to get a lap ahead. Poor timing...jobsites are slowing. • 6-Week Historical Evaluation: Note the reversal in up and down week changes over the coming six weeks. Less up weeks and more down weeks...suggesting the lumber market begins to leak going forward. •Sales / Production Ratio: Lumber: S/P Ratios lag by one week. The numbers we see now are from the three previous weeks. Next week's ratios will reflect better sales early this week in SPF, SYP and OSB...boosting the 3-week average. Still, not strong enough to suggest a two-week order file. OSB mills have a stronger order file than their lumber counter parts. This may allow them to sidestep price softness next week. •Housing: New home sales reached and eight year high in June, assuming there is not a 21k downward revision comparable to the May 21k upward revision. Existing home sales highest since February 2007. Housing is solid, but facing a one month summer heat hurdle...and price resistance. •Forecast: The most immediate impact on this summer lumber market is heat. Builders have trudged through it so far, but now it is dangerous. This week, just the last three days, contractor yards and truss plants are getting calls to hold delivery. This will expand inventories all through the pipeline; stifling new mill orders. This week's buys will lose urgent delivery status. Short term (over the next three weeks) we will be a buyers' market. •Strategy: Lumber: Look for steady prices into this Friday, then negotiable by next Friday. Look ahead to see what purchases can be delayed for a week. OSB: Producers have the ball. Prices may bump Friday on previous momentum. Look for brokers with discounted offerings as they feel the stall approaching. Delay purchases. Lumber Unlimited Jacksonville Florida

JobLine exclusive!

800-289-JOBS Getting Up Close and Personal at Lumber Unlimited in Jacksonville, Florida! On June 20, we visited Lumber Unlimited to learn more about their company and why YOU should want to work there! Gladys Watson, the Design Manager, showed us the plant, offices, and other employee areas including their “super kitchen” available for everyone to use. Sometimes they get together for staff lunches, too. Another employee showed us his office with a lot of models, mostly Star Wars vintage. Did I say a lot? You’ve got to see this video! One of the managers, who has been in the industry almost 30 years and there almost 15 years, explained how the company makes an effort to keep people happy. They are flexible, doing as much as possible when you need time to take care of things or if you’re sick. Even though it’s a full service Truss Plant and Builders Supply, I definitely got the feeling that the truss division is a very close family, with the Truss Plant and offices occupying half of their overall (impressive) facility.

Tired or working in a cramped office, hot, noisy? How about your own office? Clean, air conditioned / heated, full kitchen, comfy but supportive seating, large L shaped desk, Dell workstations with dual monitors. They encourage people to make it like home. One of the designers we visited had a Lego collection that was huge!

They have been in business over 50 years and need to hire in house truss designers from intermediate to advanced level. They use Alpine but will consider other software experience. Projects are mostly Single Family Custom from 3,000-7,000 SFT. If you have single family skills, currently use Alpine, or if you use another software and are willing to learn Alpine, consider this opportunity. Compensation: $24-30hr. plus overtime. ($55-80k+-) They offer extensive overtime. Relocation assistance available.

Business is good, the company is growing, and they have plenty of room to add designers! The offices for designers are on the first floor and administration is upstairs. Although each office is big enough for two designers, there is currently one person in each office with a few waiting for new arrivals. The desks are large, L shaped, with plenty of room to lay out plans if needed. Designer’s equipment includes dual monitor Dell Computers, a chair of your preference (within reason), or as we saw with one designer, a standing height desk and high chair. Unlike most of the truss plants I have visited, the designers’ office is in a modern professional building and not part of the production building. It is clean, air conditioned (and I assume heated but this is Florida), and parking is in an enclosed area.

Getting to Lumber Unlimited is easy. The main road from the interstate or loop takes you to within one block of the plant. We went mid morning and there was no traffic. I assume 5:00 pm will be harder, but you may be able to flex your hours to miss the rush. Most of the designers and office staff do not live near the plant, but within a 15-30 minute commute. In that time you can be at the beach, downtown, in the suburbs, or in the country. Housing costs in Jacksonville are very reasonable and there are plenty of leasing opportunities.

JobLine is taking our service to a higher level with our new Up Close & Personal pilot program. We have exclusive access to Employer’s facilities, and we interview management as well as employees to find out what it’s like to work there. Best of all, we make a video of the visit, so you can see what it’s like to be there. We ask tough questions. We don’t stop with management, but go behind the scenes and ask employees why they like working there. Our video is available to qualified JobLine candidates, along with the job description, benefits details, hiring policies, local data links, and video links that show the area, things to do, local history, events, and venues, to give a general feel of the big city, small town, or just plain country lifestyle. We can’t do this for all employers yet, but will be rolling out more Exclusive Job Opportunities over the next few months. I think it would be easier to list two job descriptions I can’t claim credit for performing, with a caveat, although I never operated a component saw or worked extensively in the maintenance department I had a tremendous success improving aspects of both these areas. I was a hands on owner, even to the extent of developing a 28 hour training course in truss fabrication which potential employees had to pass. I lowered our workers comp x-mod to .58 and kept it there. I lead over 200 individuals and knew each one of them but I did have trouble with the names of their wives and children. I coordinated efforts of every department as if from one customer to another. I read extensively and studied trends in order to develop industry best practices. Customer satisfaction, quality and safety can and must work hand in hand. It is often said, “You can only offer two of the three things customers always want”;and you must choose between Price, Quality or Service. I don’t believe that is a true statement and the entity which can satisfy all three? ....has everyone else wondering how they do what they do! I put together production fabrications team which quadrupled production. I created a sawsystem which could handle 5,000 boards /shift with 7-800 set-ups.(on 1 component saw) I helped develop a fully automated functioning quality control devise for roof trusses which is now patented. I could go on and on about the past so, I will say, I overcame huge obstacles and I met with success. But failures followed those successes I am being honest. I think my best ideas will reflect additional lessons learned following such failure. They be the ones which are suited to improve an envirionment where opportunities currently exist for significant bolstered by an awareness we should always strive for improvement. Whatever we are doing now can in whatever aspect of an operation you turn your attention to can be made better..

The Critical Link Between Lean Thinking and Production Problem-Solving for LBM and Component Manufacturers Use lean to expose issues, find the root of problems, and improve your business

By Ben Hershey, Coach & Mentor, 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC Sometimes people give me a variety of answers when I ask them to describe lean: tightening the belt; doing more with less; reducing inventory; cost-savings program; waste elimination; quality program; reducing head count; and turnaround tool. The word has meaning to many different people – it even has a different meaning in other industries, as I know from the work I do. Most people know lean as a manufacturing-focused set of tools sometimes based on the “Toyota Manufacturing” model. But it’s important to know that lean is about problem-solving. Everything about lean is solving problems. Tools were created to solve some sort of problem that someone had at some point along the way in a lean system. Lean. Problem is not a dirty word We all know those days when someone comes up to us and says, “I have a problem.” Typically the first thing we think is, “Now what?” On a lean journey, you need to ask yourself, “How does the word problem make you feel?” A problem is a chance, an opportunity, for you to improve your business. Problems are a way to get at the root of what is really going on. We do not have operations in a bubble, and thus we have opportunities for improvement which are sometimes called problems. Back to Lean Many people think of lean as 5S or “sweep, sweep, sweep, sweep, sweep.” Well, if you have time to lean (as in relax), then you have time to clean. While that’s using a completely different definition of lean, the adage is appropriate. Walk through your operation, your lumber yard, as if you are the customer. Would you to buy components or lumber from a place that is messy and with things all over the place? Look at your own operation and ask yourself, “Does this place look like it can be relied on to deliver a quality product?” When you look at it from the customer’s viewpoint, a nice, clean, organized, well-lit operation with people working all day long helps build trust. The customer is more confident that he will receive the quality and service he needs. At its base, this is really what 5S is all about, and this is how Lean Thinking and Production Problem-Solving can work together: 5S – Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, Sustain • Sort: when in doubt, sort it out. If you did not know this already, people get emotionally attached to the things we have in our businesses. Just try to take something away from them. I have done multiple lean projects over the years where we took garbage cans or bins full of stuff out of a facility. The next day an owner, a manager, an employee, a driver, someone… It is the same every time, it doesn’t matter that there was an enormous layer of dust on the item, they cry out, “I might use that sometime.” Items need to go, we need to sort it out and rid ourselves of the clutter. Our operations will be more efficient, and you really will be able to get along without that item you have not touched since, well, 1990. • Set: a place for everything and everything in its place. Look at the shelf. Are your employees putting tools and items on a shelf without regard for what should be there, so it just keeps getting stacked up higher and higher? Watch, when they need something, then they’ll have to hunt and move things around to find what they need. A better approach is to eliminate waste, waittime, search-time, and motion from the system. Put items so everybody knows where they are.

• Shine: cleanliness is what Mom taught you! A clean operation and lumber yard lets you know when things aren’t right. Did you read that correctly? That’s the biggest benefit of 5S—not that you get a clean shop. The biggest benefit is the ability to see problems, the ability to see waste, and the ability to know when something is out of place and not in the right spot. • Standardize: constant drum beat. Every operation has a rhythm. Whether you have a lumber yard or component operation or both, they all have a rhythm. I once had someone tell me, “A clean shop is a slow shop.” I stopped dead in my tracks. He said, “We’re only clean when we don’t have work.” I said, “We’ve got to get that mentality changed!” We’ve all heard people say, “We don’t have time to clean today because we’re too busy.”And yet we have plenty of time to go searching for tools and parts? Now think about what you can save by spending a few minutes every day cleaning up. • Sustain: rinse and repeat. Ever notice how habits are hard to break? They say it takes 21 days to start breaking a habit. That’s because the human body and human brain take 21 days of consecutively doing something before it starts to become a habit. The number which surprises people is that it takes on average 66 straight days of doing the same thing to become a habit. Habits are not easy to break or create. We have to continue to coach and mentor people.

I coach my clients; the value of lean, the critical link between lean thinking and problem-solving, is not accomplished in the office, but on the production floor and out in the lumber yard. The individuals working in these areas know more about the job, the situation, and the facility than anybody else. We need to engage them, involve them, train them in 5S, and empower them to make a difference. • And let me add the 6S of Safety Safety – Every 5S program needs to include the sixth “S” of Safety. Safety must be a priority for all of our operations and for all of our associates. Start or end your shift huddle with a safety tip/conversation, and be sure to include your office team. Safety is for everyone. Have a problem or opportunity you want to discuss; give us a call. Want to talk to an expert about plant management software programs and variables, someone who has actually owned and operated multiple operations, give us a call.

How to Select a Connector – Hurricane Ties

by Keith Cullum, PE, SE, Simpson Strong-Tie When it comes to wood frame construction, hurricane ties are among the most commonly specified connectors. They play a critical role in a structure’s continuous load path and may be used in a variety of applications, like attaching roof framing members to the supporting wall top plate(s), or tying wall top or bottom plates to the studs. They are most commonly used to resist uplift forces, but depending on regional design and construction practices, hurricane ties may also resist lateral loads that act in- or out-of-plane in relation to the wall. Simpson Strong-Tie manufactures approximately 20 different models of hurricane ties, not counting twist straps, other clips, or the new fully-threaded SDWC screws often used in the same applications. This assortment of models raises the question, “How do you select the right one?” This article outlines some of the key elements to consider when selecting a hurricane tie for your project.

Demand Load Let’s start with the obvious one. If your building’s roof trusses have an uplift of 600 lb at each end, don’t select a hurricane tie with a published capacity of less than 600 lb. It’s also important to consider combined loading if you plan to use the tie to resist both uplift and lateral loads. When the connector is resisting lateral loads, its capacity to resist uplift is reduced. I won’t go into too much detail on this topic since it was covered in a recent blog post, but in lieu of the traditional unity equation shown in the table, certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors (hurricane ties included) are permitted to use the alternative approach outlined in the table. Traditional Linear Interaction Equation When a connector is loaded simultaneously in more than one direction, the allowable load must be evaluated as shown here. For all connectors use the following equation:

Alternative Approach for Simultaneous Loading As an alternate, certain roof-towall connectors (embedded truss anchors, pages 180 and 181, seismic and hurricane ties, pages 178–179, and twist straps, page 168) can be evaluated using the following:

Design Uplift/Allowable Uplift + Design Lateral Parallel to Plate / Allowable Lateral Parallel to Plate + Design Lateral Perpendicular to Plate / Allowable Lateral Perpendicular to Plate < 1.0.

The design load in each direction shall not exceed the published allowable load in that direction multiplied by 0.75.

The three terms in the unity equation are due to the possible directions that exist to generate force on a connector. The number of terms that must be considered for simultaneous loading is at the sole discretion of the Designer and is dependent on their method of calculating wind forces and the utilization of the connector within the structural system. What if the tabulated loads in the catalog for a single connector just aren’t enough? Use multiple connectors! An important note on using multiple connectors, though: Using four hurricane ties doesn’t always mean you’ll get 4x the load. Check out the recently updated F-C-HWRCAG16 High Wind-Resistant Construction Application Guide for allowable loads using multiple connectors and for guidance on the proper placement of connectors so as to avoid potential overlap or fastener interference.

Dimensional Requirements While the majority of the hurricane ties that Simpson Strong-Tie offers are one-sided (such as the H2.5A), some are designed so the truss or rafter fits inside a “U” shape design to allow for fastening from both sides (such as the H1). If using the latter, make sure the width of the truss or rafter is suitable for the width of the opening in the hurricane tie – don’t select an H1 for a 2-ply roof truss.

Figure 2. Proper Placement of (4) H2.5A’s to Avoid Fastener Interference Additionally, the height of the hurricane tie and the wood members being attached should be compatible. For example, an H2.5A would not be compatible with a roof truss configured Figure 3. H2.5A and H1 Hurricane Ties with only a nominal 2×4 bottom chord over the plate since the two upper nail holes in the H2.5A will miss the 2×4 bottom chord (see Figure 2). This is actually such a common mis-installation that we specifically tested this scenario and have developed an engineering letter on it (note the greatly reduced capacity). In this case the ideal choice would be the H2.5T, which has been specifically designed for a 2×4 truss bottom chord.

Fasteners

Figure 4. H2.5A Installed on 2×4 Truss Bottom Chord

Figure 5. H2.5T Installed on 2×4 Truss Bottom Chord

It’s also essential to pay close attention to the diameter and length of the fasteners specified in the Simpson Strong-Tie literature. While many hurricane ties have been evaluated with 8d x 1½” nails for compatibility with nominal 2x roof framing, some require the use of a longer, 8d common (2½” long) nail and others require a larger-diameter 10d nail. When specifying products for a continuous load path, it’s a good idea to select connectors that all use the same size nail to avoid improper installations on the job. It’s much easier if the installer doesn’t need to worry about which size nail he currently has loaded in his pneumatic nailer.

Wall Framing Do your roof and wall framing members line up? If so, creating a continuous load path can be made simpler by using a single hurricane tie to fasten the roof framing to studs. The H2A, H7Z, and H10S are some of the connectors designed to do just that. If your framing doesn’t align, though, you can use two connectors to complete the load path. For simplification and to reduce potential mix-ups in the field, consider selecting the same hurricane tie for your roof framing-to-top-plate and top plate-to-stud connections, like the H2.5A. Figure 6. Roof-Framing-to-Stud Connection with Single Hurricane Tie Besides the added benefit of fewer connectors to install, using a single hurricane tie from your roof framing to your wall studs can eliminate top-plate roll, a topic discussed at length in one of our technical bulletins.

Other Factors Some additional factors that may influence your selection of a hurricane tie are:

 Environmental factors and corrosion should be considered when selecting any product. Nearly every hurricane tie is available in ZMAX®, our heavier zinc galvanized coating, and several are available in Type 316 stainless steel. A full list of products available in ZMAX or stainless steel may be found on our website. On a related note, be sure to use a fastener with a finish similar to that of the hurricane tie in order to avoid galvanic corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals.

 When retrofitting an existing structure, local jurisdiction requirements will also influence your decision on which hurricane tie to use. As an example, the State of Florida has very specific requirements for roof retrofitting, which we outline in a technical bulletin, and they specifically mention the roofto-wall connection. Be sure to check with your local city, county, or state for specific requirements before you decide to retrofit.

 Availability of wind insurance discounts in your area could also affect your decision on which type of hurricane tie to use on your home. Your insurance company may provide a greater discount on your annual premium for ties that wrap over the top of your roof framing and are installed with a certain minimum quantity of nails. Check with your insurance provider for additional information and requirements. Although this is a lot to take in, hopefully it makes choosing the right hurricane tie easier for you on your next project.

Wood products, forestry applaud House introduction of “Timber Innovation Act”

WASHINGTON – The American Wood Council (AWC), American Forest Foundation (AFF), Binational Softwood Lumber Council (BSLC) and Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA) today announced their strong support for the “Timber Innovation Act,” introduced by Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Glenn “GT” Thompson (RPA), Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA). The bill (H.R. 5628) is a companion to the Senate bill (S. 2892) and would establish a performance-driven research and development program to advance tall wood building construction in the United States. The House bill also includes language allowing the Wood Innovation Grant program to support proposals to use and/or retrofit existing sawmill facilities in areas with high unemployment to produce mass timber materials. “The rise of green building practices means more attention is being paid than ever before to how our country’s buildings impact the environment, and Congress has taken note. Recognizing that wood provides the lowest life-cycle impact among major construction materials, legislators in both chambers of Congress have turned their attention to using mass timber to lessen the environmental burdens associated with the building sector. While tall wood building construction will benefit the sustainability in our urban areas, the effects will also promote rural prosperity. The manufacture of mass timber materials has the potential to support jobs in areas of rural America that have yet to recover from the recession. AWC thanks these legislators for their leadership in championing tall wood construction in the U.S. House of Representatives,” said AWC President and CEO Robert Glowinski.

The American Forest Foundation (AFF) works on the ground with families, teachers and elected officials to promote stewardship and protect our nation’s forest heritage. A commitment to the next generation unites our nationwide network of forest owners and teachers working to keep our forests healthy and our children well-prepared for the future they will inherit. The Binational Softwood Lumber Council (BSLC), a nonprofit organization, was established in 2006 by the Canadian and U.S. governments. The council is leading the effort to increase the use of wood products as part of the shift to green building. Sustainably harvested wood products from North America create jobs in rural communities, sequester significant amounts of carbon and help reduce the overall environmental footprint of a home or building. Council’s effort includes initiatives that bring together expertise from various disciplines to promote the use of North American wood products in green building. It is an excellent example of the council’s ability to bring together landowners, private businesses and government agencies from Canada and the U.S. to achieve a common goal.

“This companion legislation will not only help reduce our environmental footprint, it will also help the families and individuals who own and care for the largest portion of U.S. forests, and supply the majority of the timber we use. Encouraging wood markets ensures landowners have the needed income to keep their land in forests and are able to The Southeastern Lumber steward it so that all Americans get the resources they count on, such as clean water, wildlife habitat and sustainable wood supplies. Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com

Dear Anna: I’m a structural engineer in Southside VA and have been practicing since early 80’s. I graduated from Virginia Tech in 1980. I attended the VT course this past spring and it was excellent. I routinely provide truss bracing information on my roof framing plans. Even so, I strongly feel the responsibility of truss bracing designs, temporary and permanent, should be provided by the CM. This is how the metal truss industry operates and it works voodoo slick. A truss design engineer spoke up and reinforced this at the VT course. He stated that the light-gauge truss industry is relatively new compared to the wood truss industry, and that the new practice of providing permanent bracing design by the steel side was a natural evolution for light-frame trusses. Thank ya’ll for your work on this important matter. Jeff Robinson Consulting Engineer Emporia, VA

This month, Joe has been so busy, he's still working on the sixth and seventh words, so he hasn't made it to the last word yet! Joe promises to be back next month -- and we all know it will be worth the wait. A big thanks to everyone for reading this issue. We hope you are enjoying the summer of 2016!

I have been using the approach Frank is promoting since the days of the old TPI Green Sheet to HIB 91 to the BCSI series on truss erection with great success. The architects, engineers, and building officials I have sent these documents to have understood this information. I also explain the design responsibilities section of the ANSI/TPI 1 document. Most are not aware of this information and the reasons for those responsibilities. Lecil Alexander P. E. Universal Forest Products, Inc. I agree with Frank Woeste, Ph.D., P.E. Our industry should take the lead; however, due basically to the primary reaction many industry leaders have when the subject of permanent (or temporary for that matter) bracing comes up, their tendency is to avoid the subject like the plague. This is a reaction that they hope the issue will be resolved by someone else and don’t want to be drawn into the fray. I believe our industry is exactly the parties that should take on the challenge! We understand the issues, capacities of our software, and have the experience to create an efficient, effective system. The real catch is how do we get paid for the service and not step on the toes of other interests? Glenn Traylor Structural Building Components Industry Consultant
