Exhibitions July to December 2010
Volcano:
Turner to Warhol 24 July – 31 October This is the first exhibition to celebrate the extraordinary artistic outpourings that volcanic eruptions have triggered over the past five centuries. From early engravings, showing imagined cross-sections of the fiery centre of the earth, to an explosive series of paintings, including works by Joseph Wright, J M W Turner and Andy Warhol, the exhibition examines the power and influence of volcanoes through an exciting range of historic and contemporary works of art.
Kurt Tong: In Case it Rains in Heaven 13 November – 12 December The Chinese have believed for centuries that when a person dies they will need to take earthly possessions with them into the afterlife. This tradition continues today, with relatives creating and burning paper versions of personal objects including money, cars and even iPods. Kurt Tong’s rich, highly-coloured photographs document the creation of these fascinating paper objects before they are burnt.
Artists’ Christmas cards 20 November – 12 December A festive display of artist-designed Christmas cards including cards by Enid Marx, which are in our collection. A successful designer, Enid Marx was well known for her designs for stamps, posters and seating fabric for London Transport in the post-war period.

Folk Art is a wide-ranging term which often includes objects made by untrained artists. Terms such as ‘people’s art’ or ‘popular art’ are also widely used. Examples from our collection include: shop signs, portraits of animals, samplers, ships’ figureheads, corn dolls and domestic objects. More contemporary examples might include: procession banners and costumes, tattoos, graffiti and fairground art.
WE NEED YOU! Add images of your Folk Art to our Folk Art archive by 30 September 2010 Online: www.comptonverney.org.uk/folkart By post: What the Folk Say, Compton Verney, Warwickshire, CV35 9HZ.
