ANALYSIS Oracle
Sales first An aggressive sales-first mantra has made billions for Oracle. This approach may be backfiring, though, as competitors and former partners line up to take Oracle down and customers start to call the company’s tactics hostile. Will this hurt the firm’s future?

Steve Ballmer, CEO at Microsoft
The jewel in the crown With Windows 8 on the horizon and the PC-veteran announcing its intention to enter the lucrative tablet market with the Surface, 2012 was already a big year for Microsoft. To top that off, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gathered the international media in San Francisco last month to unveil Office 13 - completing the set that Microsoft hopes will allow it to lead the impending redefinition of personal computing.

CASE STUDY Ankabut
Connecting the world Everybody’s heard of Internet2, the network consortium that connects universities and research communities across the USA. Less have heard of Ankabut, the UAE equivalent of Internet2, which is not only connecting university campuses nationally and internationally, but believes the collaboration will lead to a stark increase in research excellence from the Middle East. Ben Rossi writes.

The American University in Dubai’s (AUD) main objective in its Ankabut implementation was to connect its telepresence facility on a dedicated network with the telepresence facility at the University of Southern California (USC), says Frank Seifaee, IT services manager at AUD. “To accomplish this we needed a direct network connection to the National Lambda Research (NLR)/Internet 2, which Ankabut could provide,” he says. Overall the entire Ankabut implementation project was fairly quick and smooth. “We worked very closely with the Ankabut organisation to complete the preliminary assessments to be able to define the project requirements and scope. During this phase we had to get our product vendor Cisco involved to make sure its requirements was met by the network operator. The success of the project was mainly due to having a clear understanding of the project requirements, collaboration between the key decision makers and the professional assistance of the Ankabut and Cisco teams,” he adds. The network allows AUD to establish a global classroom environment that can connect to any telepresence-enabled institution that is on the global exchange network. This gives students and faculty members the opportunity to participate in online collaborations and research projects regardless of their physical locations. “The network obviously offers more than just connecting two sites. Ankabut allows us to access other resources available on Internet 2, such as advanced grid computing, digital libraries, cloud backup, cloud storage, DNS hosting and so on,” says Seifaee.

KHALIFA UNIVERSITY Khalifa University was part of the origional memorandum of understanding signed during the formation of Ankabut and was one of the first universities to connect to the network, says Jacob Kuriyan, director of IT at Khalifa University. “Joining the network was hassle-free with the team supporting us in configuration, set up and testing, he says. The benefits of connecting to the network are compelling. Apart from the high speed connectivity and inter-campus VPN, the current 10G backbone connects us to all major universities in the country, he adds. The opportunity to connect to peer institutions all over the world using Ankabut’s link to the Internet2 attracted Khalifa University. The University faculty comes from all over the world and have research interests which will need collaboration with other researchers on the other side of the globe. This is easily facilitated using the Ankabut network. Ankabut has made it possible to seamlessly connect the campuses in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah at high speeds. The intercampus VPN comes bundled with the membership services at no extra cost. “We conduct HD video conferencing regularly between the campuses, which has not only increased the speed of our decision making and collaboration between the academic and administrative workforce, but also resulted in considerable reduction in travel. Collaboration with many of our international partners has also improved tremendously, says Kuriyan. Its virtual classrooms, which are connected over Ankabut’s high speed VPN, have also helped the university to conduct remote lectures thus reducing travel of the faculty between campuses.

Playing catch-up As infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service models gain popularity in the U.S. and Western Europe, adoption amongst Middle East enterprises remains low. Ben Rossi asks why, and analyses the challenges that organisations face with IaaS and PaaS in order to predict the movement of the market.
A
few years ago the debate was similar, only with software-‐as-‐a-‐ ȋ Ȍ Ǧ ϐ apparent, but the adoption was low. Now, with SaaS far more common place across organisations, it is infrastructure-‐as-‐a-‐ service (IaaS) and platform-‐as-‐a-‐service (PaaS) that are getting the same treatment. VIDEO CONFERENCING TO ENABLE HEALTHCARE COLLABORATION: OVUM The most lucrative and effective way for healthcare providers to provide improved services is by enhancing the level of collaboration between different stakeholders using the video conferencing platform, according to Ovum. In its latest report, Video conferencing and healthcare; A new chapter in collaboration, the independent technology analyst firm found video conferencing will have a substantial impact on care outcomes and patient and practitioner satisfaction when properly integrated into healthcare systems and working practices. The technology is expected to deliver results in a number of key areas including the development of specialised treatment networks, more equitable healthcare and effective communication. E-health will be one key area. “Video conferencing solutions must be tailored to various usage scenarios, ranging from diseasespecific diagnosis and treatment between a care provider and patient to consultation between

professionals,” Ovum telco strategy principal analyst and co-author of the report, Charlie Davies, said. He claimed the equipment and networks required will also vary significantly, ranging from high-end tele-presence reliant on a high-speed broadband connection to desktop and laptop services. The study also showed promising long-term prospects for video conferencing, with the rise in fixed and mobile broadband connectivity, improvements in equipment interoperability and innovation in application and machine to machine advancement underpinning its development. “The increasingly central role of ICT will improve outcomes, allow remote consultations and save costs,” Ovum senior analyst and coauthor of the report, Cornelia Wels-Maug, said. “Interaction between healthcare professionals, care providers and patients, as well as training and education, can be facilitated easily with video conferencing.”

The primary business case for investing in NGFWs is cost-savings since most next generation firewall vendors are combining the functions of a traditional firewall with that of an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). End users are no longer required to maintain separate firewall and IPS deployments. A single instance of nextgen firewall is now sufficient to maintain the necessary security posture.” Ǥdz ǡ Dz ǡ ǡ ϐ ϐ Ǥ Ǧ ǡ Ǥdz Dz ϐ Ǥ ϐ Ǥ ǡ Ǥ

espite all the hype and hoopla, IPTV services are yet to see mass adoption in the Middle East though some of the service providers such as Etisalat, du and STC have been offering the services for a while now. Market researchers SNL Kagan forecast IPTV subscriptions to grow from 40 million in 2010 to more than 70 million by 2014, and the Middle East subscribers are expected to reach 315,547 by 2013. ǡ ǯ Ǧ Ǣ ǡ Ǥ ϐ ǫ ǡ ǯ Ǥ ǡ Ǧ Ǥ
