COSTA RICA & USA OPEN GROUP A WITH VICTORIES 12.04.2005: The USA and the host Costa Rica opened the 2005 CONCACAF Under-17 Group A Final Round with victories over El Salvador and Cuba, respectively, in Heredia. Kyle Nakazawa, Ryan Soroka and Preston Zimmerman all scored for the USA (1-0-0, 3 Points) in the 3:0 win over El Salvador (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the first match of Group A played at Heredia’s Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero. The victory extended the stars & stripes unbeaten streak to 14 games in CONCACAF U-17 Qualification. In a later encounter at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero, two goals by Jean Carlos Solorzano and another from Guillermo Guardia led Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 3:0 victory over Cuba (0-1-0, 0 Points). COSTA RICA ELIMINATES EL SALVADOR; CUBA TIES USA 14.04.2005: Costa Rica eliminated El Salvador by a 2:1 score, while Cuba held the USA to a 1:1 tie at the 2005 CONCACAF Under-17 Group A Final Round at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero in Heredia, Costa Rica. Kyle Nakazawa gave the USA (1-0-1, 4 Points) the lead in the opening 60 seconds of the match, but Adrian Hernandez scored the equalizer for Cuba (0-1-1, 1 Point) in the 64th minute of the second half for the 1:1 final score. In the other encounter at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero, Costa Rica (2-0-0, 6 Points) opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a goal by Julio Cesar García, but Kevin Escobar leveled the match for El Salvador (0-2-0, 0 Points) in the 47th minute of the second half. Carlos Sandoval scored the game-winner with seven minutes remaining as the ticos eliminated the salvadoreños from a possible berth to the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship. Match #4

USA QUALIFIES; COSTA RICA ADVANCES TO PLAYOFF

16.04.2005: The USA qualified to the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championship after capturing the CONCACAF Final Round Group A Crown with a 2:1 victory over the host Costa Rica at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero in Heredia. Nikolas Besagno and Omar Gonzalez scored in the 10th and 60th minutes, respectively for the USA (2-0-1, 7 Points), while Cesar Elizondo Quesada had the only tally for Costa Rica (2-1-0, 6 Points) in the 66th minute in the 2:1 loss. The stars & stripes’ victory extends their unbeaten streak to 16 games in CONCACAF U-17 Qualification and they are also the only team to have qualified to all the FIFA World Championships (1985-2005). The ticos, who finished second in CONCACAF Final Round Group A, will meet the runner-up from Group B, in a home-and-away playoff series for the third CONCACAF berth to the FIFA event. In an earlier Group A encounter, El Salvador (0-2-1, 1 Point) played Cuba (0-1-2, 2 Points) to a 2:2 draw. The cubanos took a 2:0 lead with goals by Adrián Hernández and Luis Villegas in the 19th and 26th minutes, respectively, but Joel Ely Serrano cut the deficit to 2:1 for the salvadoreños just before halftime. MEXICO PROGRESS; HONDURAS TO COMPETE IN PLAYOFF 21.05.2005: Mexico progressed to the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championship after claiming the CONCACAF Final Round Group B title with a 2:0 victory over Canada at the Estadio Carlos González y González in Culiacán, Sinaloa. Cesar Villaluz and Ever Guzman Zavala scored in the 11th and 86th minutes, respectively, for Mexico (3-0-0, 9 Points) in the win over Canada (1-2-0, 3 Points). The tricolor qualified to their eighth FIFA U-17 World Championship (second most in CONCACAF) and also have not conceded a goal in their last 664 minutes of CONCACAF Qualification. Mexico holds the CONCACAF U-17 Qualification Record for consecutive minutes without a goal against at 1,018 from 1983-1985. In an earlier encounter, Honduras (1-1-1, 4 Points) finished second in CONCACAF Final Round Group B after playing to a 1:1 tie against Haiti (0-2-1, 1 Point). Vinsly Philistin opened the scoring for the Haitians in the 32nd minute, but Luis Fernando Sosa notched the equaliser for the catrachos in the 58th minute of the second half.
