CONCACAF President’s Message
1
Foreword by CONCACAF President Jack Warner As I sat in the stands of a packed, electric Soldier Field for the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final™ I couldn’t help but feel a great sense of optimism for the future of football in our region. The quality of play and the spirit of competition - not just in the final won by a terrific strike from Benny Feilhaber – but at all 25 games makes me believe that my dream of seeing a CONCACAF nation contest a FIFA World Cup Final is closer than ever before. Sixteen of the 25 games were decided by only one goal. And over a quarter of the 64 total goals were scored in the last fifteen minutes of the game and many of these strikes were of the highest technical precision. Indeed 18 goals were scored from outside the area. For the USA it is a fourth Gold Cup title as they repeat their success of 2005. They now draw level with Mexico in the all time standings with Canada’s sole triumph coming in 2000. But the story of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is surely Guadeloupe’s fairy tale ride to the last four. Appearing in their first ever Gold Cup, Roger Salnot’s men defeated Canada and Honduras before running into a Pavel Pardo inspired Mexico in the semifinal. Keeper Franck Grandel was Goalkeeper of the tournament and Jocelyn Angloma gave a string of ageless displays to inspire his side. A shade fewer than half a million fans attended the 25 games - held in 6 cities across 19 days - making the competition the most successful Gold Cup in US history. We had sell outs in three of our venues, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago, and an average attendance of 37,613 (a number that is actually higher than the average for the Euro 2004 tournament.) Within the pages of this technical report you will find detailed profiles on the tactics and techniques employed by each of the 12 teams. For the teams that made it to the tournament they are a useful recap of what happened but for those members striving for qualification I hope that the information contained within this report can provide a barometer for future success. So with nine editions of the Gold Cup now in the books, planning has already begun for our tenth edition in 2009. Following the success of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup the bar is set very high but I am confident the nations of CONCACAF will rise to the occasion when the time comes. Regards,
Jack Warner President, CONCACAF
About CONCACAF and the Gold Cup
About CONCACAF CONCACAF "The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football" is one of six continental confederations of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) and serves as governing body of football in this part of the world. CONCACAF is composed of 40 national associations. As the administrative body for the region, CONCACAF organizes competitions, offers training courses in technical and administrative aspects of the game, and helps to build football throughout the region. The primary function of the Confederation is the organization of competitions for national teams and clubs. It also conducts qualifying tournaments for FIFA events including the FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Women's World Cup, FIFA world championships at youth levels and in beach football and futsal.
About the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ The CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is CONCACAF’s showpiece event for men’s teams as it crowns the regional champion. The USA won the inaugural eight-team competition in 1991, defeating Honduras before 40,000 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The teams battled to a scoreless draw and the first Gold Cup was decided on penalties with the stars & stripes emerging as 4:3 victors. Mexico dominated the remainder of the decade, winning three consecutive Gold Cups. The 1998 Gold Cup™ Final, also at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, drew a sell-out crowd of 91,255, as the tricolor once again claimed the CONCACAF crown thanks to a 1:0 win over the USA. After the tournament field was increased to twelve teams for the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup™, Canada made history winning their first major international honour in more than 100 years of football by defeating Colombia in the final 2:0 at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. After the USA claimed its first CONCACAF Gold Cup™ crown in over 10 years by topping Costa Rica in the 2002 finals at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Mexico returned to the top of the Confederation with their fourth crown in 2003 with 1:0 win over Brazil in the final at the Estadio Azteca. The USA won 2005 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ on penalties over Panama. The Final played at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

CONCACAF Campeonato de Naciones’ Era When the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) was formed in 1961, the first official national team competition was held lmore than two years later in El Salvador. Nine teams took part in the first competition, Costa Rica defeating the host country in the final. The CONCACAF Campeonato de Naciones, as it was called, was then held every two years from 19631971. The second edition (1965) held in Guatemala, saw Mexico defeat the host in the final of a six-team tournament. The 1967 competition was held in Honduras and saw a third different champion crowned, Guatemala. Costa Rica won their second title as hosts in 1969, knocking off Guatemala, while two years later, Mexico won their second championship as the tournament moved to the Caribbean for the first time, held in Trinidad & Tobago. In 1973, the tournament kept the same format of six teams in one site playing a single round-robin, but now there were bigger stakes attaches: the Confederation’s berth in the FIFA World Cup finals. In Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the host country pulled off a shocking upset by winning the tournament and claiming a spot in West Germany 1974. With the Campeonato de Naciones doubling as the final World Cup qualifying tournament, the next two editions were held in México City and Tegucigalpa, Honduras in 1977 and 1981, respectively, the host country came away as champion and grabbed the spots on offers each time. In 1985 and 1989, the winner of the World Cup qualifying tournament was again crowned Confederation champion. Canada and Costa Rica were named champions in ’85 and ’89, respectively, but without ever lifting a trophy. The Early Years Prior to the formation of CONCACAF, football in the region was divided into smaller, regional groups. Two main bodies existed: the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (CCCF) founded in 1938 and the North American Football Confederation (NAFC) founded in 1946. The CCCF held 10 championships from 1941-1961, Costa Rica winning seven (1941, ’46, ’48, ’53, ’55, ’60, ’61), and one each by El Salvador (1943), Panama (1951) and Haiti (1957). The NAFC held two championships, in 1947 and 1949, won each time by Mexico.

OVERALL ANALYSIS The USA repeated as Gold Cup Champions against their arch rivals from Mexico. It was a case of third time lucky, since they had lost to the tricolores on the two previous occasions in 1993 and 1998. It was the fourth championship for the US team. It was also the first time that twelve teams from the CONCACAF Confederation had contested the tournament and it resulted in some exciting and surprising contests. How else to describe the performances of the team from Guadeloupe who, en route to a narrow defeat to Mexico in the semifinals, defeated both Canada and Honduras. 2005 finalists, Panama, also gave a good account of themselves before coming up against their opponents in the final two years ago and a 2:1 defeat to the USA. 2000 Gold Cup Champions, Canada and USA, also had a good tournament, erasing memories of disappointing performances in the last two events. Overall, there were some close contests. Sixteen of the 25 games were decided by a single goal. Four games were tied and only one match in the knockout round, Mexico and Costa Rica, had to go to extra time.

were some encouraging performances. Haiti, in Group A, tied Guadeloupe in their opening game and gained a similar result in their next game against Costa Rica, only to lose a must-win game against Canada and a spot in the quarter-finals. A disappointing end for the top team in the Caribbean, but encouraging performances from a country that has shown significant progress in recent years. Cuba started off well and were unlucky to lose to Mexico in their opening game; tied their next game against Panama, but then came up against Carlos Pav贸n and his Honduran teammates and a 5:0 defeat in their final game. Hope for the future comes with the performances of some of the younger members of the
Allez Guadeloupe! Guadeloupe made a sensational start in their first ever Gold Cup. The Caribbean nation is an overseas department of France, unable to enter FIFA competitions. They are, however, able to enter the Gold Cup as an associate member of CONCACAF. The island has a great legacy in supplying great players for the French National team. FC Barcelona striker Thierry Henry and six of his teammates were members of Les Bleus in Germany last summer. All were born in Guadeloupe, as was Jocelyn Angloma who came out of retirement in 2006 to play for his native country. Angloma was a key member of the team, as was AllTournament team goalkeeper, Franck Grandel. An opening tie against Caribbean rival Haiti was followed by a surprise win over Canada, which qualified the team for the knockout stages and a date with a strong Honduras team in Houston. Two early goals shocked their Central American opponents, who were unable to recover in front of the more than 70,000 fans in the Reliant Stadium. The miracle did not continue in the semifinal game against Mexico, but they gave an excellent account of themselves, only to succumb to a superb goal by Pavel Pardo as it was a great debut for the island nation. The other three Caribbean Football Union teams did not progress beyond the group stages, but there

team. The final representative from the Caribbean, Trinidad & Tobago, was unable to obtain the services of the players who had done so well in their World Cup debut in Germany. A relatively inexperienced squad still gave a creditable account of themselves. Silvio Spann scored one of the goals of the tournament and Michael Williams continued the long tradition of fine goalkeepers from the home of the Soca Warriors. Overall, teams from the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) had two wins and five ties in 14 games, with 14 goals scored and 23 conceded.
UNCAF Disappointment It was not a Gold Cup to remember for the five representatives from UNCAF (Central American Zone). Four were eliminated in the quarterfinals, with El Salvador eliminated at the group stage. Panama were hopeful of reaching the final stages again after their magnificent performances in the 2005 tournament. An exciting 3:2 win over UNCAF rivals Honduras in the opening game gave hope. A 2:2 tie against Cuba, in a game in which Panama missed a last-minute penalty and a narrow loss to Mexico meant a quarter-final game against the host

country. The USA prevailed by the odd goal, but Panama made it close with a second half comeback. An experienced Honduras squad bounced back from the opening loss to Panama with a great win over Mexico and a 5:0 triumph over Cuba. Guadeloupe spoiled the celebrations with their surprising 2:1 win in the quarter-finals. Costa Rica, another UNCAF country with a good tradition, also suffered a defeat in their opening game, but recovered well to tie Haiti and defeat Guadeloupe, finishing second to Canada in the group. The ticos proved to be difficult opponents for Mexico in the quarterfinals, but were eliminated by a Carlos Salcido goal after extra time, despite a fine performance by goal-

Mexico, also under a new head coach, Hugo Sanchez, started off slowly with narrow wins over Cuba and Panama on either side of a 2:1 defeat at the hands of Honduras. Costa Rica took the tricolores to extra time in the quarterfinals in Houston and the surprising newcomers from Guadeloupe were also eliminated by the only goal of the game in the semifinals. The appearance of the talented Rafael Marquez in the final would not change the result of a competitive final game. Canada impressed many observers with their play, especially in the fine quarter-final win over Guatemala. A spirited second half comeback against USA in the semifinals was not enough to defeat the eventual winners, but the performances give hope for the future in the land of the Maple Leafs. Overall, teams from the Northern Zone combined for 13-4-0 (W-L-T Record) while scoring 29 goals and conceding 13 goals.
TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL OBSERVATIONS

keeper Jose Porras. Guatemala were also eliminated in the quarterfinals by a talented Canadian team. This, after the team had finished second to the USA in Group B, courtesy of a narrow win over neighbours El Salvador and a tie against Trinidad & Tobago. The team performed well in the opening game; a 1:0 loss to the host country. Overall, UNCAF teams had a 610-3 record, with 23 goals scored and 28 conceded.
USA #1 – AGAIN The USA team won their fourth Gold Cup with a close win over their rivals in the Northern Zone, Mexico. This after a similar 2:1 result over northern neighbours, Canada, in a competitive semifinal game. The USA maintained their magnificent record in group play with three wins, seven goals scored and no goals conceded. Overall, in nine tournament appearances, the USA holds an unbeaten 21-0-1 record in group play, recording 15 shutouts in 22 matches. Bob Bradley’s squad won all their games in the knockout stages by a 2:1 scoreline, defending 2:0 leads against Panama and Canada and coming from behind to defeat Mexico in a competitive final game in front of a pro-Mexico crowd at Soldier Field, Chicago.
Most of the teams in the tournament utilized a flexible 4-4-2 system of play with only Costa Rica playing with a 3-5-2 formation. The well-organized USA team rarely varied from a system that utilized a flat back four, with two defensively-minded central midfielders who formed a solid defensive block in front of the two central defenders. Pablo Mastroeni was a key figure in the first four games, assisted usually by Benny Feilhaber or Michael Bradley. The flank players were more attackminded, but always tracked back well in defense, provided good support and the lines were always compact. Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley excelled in this area with Clint Dempsey also effective in this role. Interesting to note the tactical switch in the semifinal game against Canada when Dempsey switched with Donovan in the right midfield position. This, to counter the attacking play and mobility of Julian De Guzman and Dwayne De Rosario. There was a similar situation in the final when the US team had to cope with the attacking threats of Carlos Salcido, down the left side of the field. Mexico utilized the technical skills of Salcido well, especially in the later stages of the tournament. A very effective attacker, he was also an extra defender when the opposition was in possession of the ball. Mexico were also able to utilize the overall skills of the experienced Pavel Pardo in the overall team unit. Pardo was always the anchor man for the
6
mobile Mexican midfield and was one of the main reasons why his team again reached the final. Pardo occupied a defensive midfield role in front of the defense, a role that was also performed well by players from other teams in the tournament. The Canadian, Martin Nash, impressed with his vision, ball-winning ability and passing in that role and Guatemala missed the contribution of Leonel Noriega in that position in the quarterfinal against Canada. The presence of an attacking midfielder in a playmaker role was also important to several teams. In this regard Costa Rica were fortunate to have the talented Walter Centeno who had an excellent tournament. Tournament MVP Julian De Guzman of Canada also caused problems with his mobility and individual skills and the experienced Jocelyn Angloma was one of the reasons why Guadeloupe did so well in their first-ever Gold Cup Tournament. Up front, most teams used two strikers to good effect; often a target player supported by a mobile teammate able to make good supporting runs off the ball. Both the finalists used a variety of combinations in the tournament, based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. Canada and Guatemala were two teams that mainly used a lone striker in games. Ali Gerba did well in this role for Canada; as did Carlos Ruiz for Guatemala, but there were often occasions when a lack of support, especially in the case of Ruiz, reduced their effectiveness. In closing, mention should also be made of the contributions of the goalkeepers in the tournament. The four semifinalists all benefited from the displays of the men between the posts. Pat Onstad was drafted into the Canadian line-up at the last moment when Greg Sutton sustained a head injury in training and did well in all the games that he played. Franck Grandel only conceded 5 goals in 5 games against some of the top teams in the tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament team, as well as being named as the top goalkeeper. The number one players for the two finalists also had excellent tournaments. The experienced Oswaldo Sanchez made key saves in games in the knockout stages and Tim Howard made a magnificent reaction save moments from the final whistle that preserved a victory for his team. The combination of Howard and the experienced Kasey Keller only conceded three goals in six games and finished top of the goalkeeper standings.
2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
THE GOALS 64 goals were scored in the 25 games for an average of 2.56 goals per game; figures that were below in 2005 tournament, when 73 goals were scored in the 25 games, for an average of 2.92 goals per game. Interesting to note that 17 of the goals (27%) were scored in the last 15 minutes of play in the first half. The 64 goals came from a total of 561 goal attempts compared to the 2005 tournament when the 73 goals came from 741 goal attempts.
The 2007 Gold Cup drew huge crowds at the venues and on TV
47 goals came from open play with 22 coming from combined play and actions in the central areas of the field; 23 were the result of flank play and only 2 were individual actions. Some of the combined play in and around the penalty area resulted in well-taken goals. No better example than one of the Canadian goals scored in a brilliant display of attacking soccer in the first half of their quarter-final game against Guatemala. Ali Gerba scored the goal, but tournament MVP Julian De Guzman was a key player in the action. Several goals were the result of excellent, well-placed volley shots. Ramon Sanchez was on the mark for El Salvador against Trinidad and Tobago and JosĂŠ Contreras scored with a well-taken shot for Guatemala against El Salvador that proved to be the only goal of the game. JosĂŠ Luis Garces and Reynier Alcantara traded goals in the exciting Panama-Cuba game and Jocelyn Angloma executed to perfection for Guadeloupe in their surprising win over Honduras in the quarter finals. It was, however, left to the right foot of U.S. midfielder Benny Feilhaber to score the most important goal. His magnificent volley was the game winner following a corner kick in the final game against Mexico. The quantity and quality of the flank play varied in the tournament, with several teams very limited
Overall Analysis
in their use of the flanks to open up well-organized defences. Despite this fact, more goals (23) came from the flanks than through central areas of the field (22). The U.S.A. were very effective in this department, with 38% (5/13) of the goals the result of well-executed cross balls to players making good runs into the penalty area. Guadeloupe also exploited the far post well, with 2 goals against Honduras. Overall, 11 goals came from headers following quality cross balls, but the majority of the teams did not possess players who were dangerous in this aspect of the game. Exceptions being top scorer Carlos Pavon of Honduras and Jared Borgetti, the outstanding attacker for Mexico. One feature of the 2007 tournament was the quality of some of the distance shooting; 28% (18/64) goals were scored from outside the penalty area and there were some remarkable strikes at goal. It all started in the opening game between Costa Rica and Canada, highlighted by the ‘golazo’, the winning goal by Canadian midfielder Julian De Guzman. The Cuban, Reynier Alcantara, impressed with his longdistance effort against Mexico and Guadeloupe scored both their goals in the surprising win over Canada from outside the penalty area. Blas Perez of Panama scored a memorable goal against the U.S.A. and the multi-talented Mexican, Pavel Pardo, scored one of the goals of the tournament with his stunning 35-yard strike to eliminate the brave squad from Guadeloupe in the semi-finals.
7
Several goals resulted from well-taken direct free kicks. The most spectacular was probably Silvio Spann’s 40-yard ‘Rocket’ that gave the Soca Warriors from Trinidad and Tobago an early goal against El Salvador. Walter Centeno was always a danger for free kicks around the penalty area and scored a superb goal against Guadeloupe. Other free kick goals to remember came courtesy of Amado Guevara of Honduras and the talented Jaime Colome of Cuba, also against Panama. The most remarkable goal-scoring story in the tournament involved the experienced Honduran striker, Carlos Pavon, who finished top of the goal-scoring charts courtesy of his 5 goals. Four of those goals came in the remarkable game against Cuba, when he scored a hat trick (Sombrero) in the first 45 minutes of play. Two, courtesy of well-timed runs into the penalty area and two when he used his head to good effect following a poor pass-back and a well-executed corner kick. A performance that resulted in a transfer from his Honduran Club, Real CD España to the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League
Set Plays There was no better example of a team that worked its set plays to the fullest extent than the Gold Cup champions from the U.S.A. Bob Bradley’s well-organised team scored 54% (7/13) in this manner, aided to a large extent by the ability of Landon Donovan, who scored 4 goals from penalty kicks (3 in K/O stages of the tournament). Two goals came from 19 corner kicks and a free kick resulted in the opening goal in the semi-final game against Canada. Overall, 17 goals came from Standard Situations (set plays) 8 from penalty kicks, 5 from free kicks, but only 4 goals from a total of 216 corner kicks, testimony to well-organised defences. Interesting to note that Mexico and U.S.A., two of the best-organised teams in corner kicks, both scored important goals in games in this manner. Pavel Pardo’s well-executed kick resulted in the only goal for Carlos Salcido in the game against Panama, and when Mexico failed to clear a left-wing corner kick, Benny Feilhaber scored the winner in the final.

“MOOCH” Remembered Glenn “Mooch” Myernick passed away on 9 October 2006. An assistant coach for the USA in World Cup and Gold Cup tournaments, he was an ambassador to all levels of the game as a player and coach. The Mooch Myernick Memorial Fund was established in his honour by the U.S. Soccer Foundation. US Coach Bob Bradley and his team, as well as soccer dignitaries, were in attendance at the Home Depot Centre prior to the start of the tournament. The purpose: to unveil a plaque naming one of the practice fields in Mooch’s honour. Later popular comedian Drew Carey, a fan of the game, also helped raise more than $100,000.00 for the fund in a video game contest against US National men’s and women’s team players.

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Canada
Canada were making their eighth Gold Cup appearance in 2007, the first under the direction of Stephen Hart, who was assistant coach to Frank Yallop in 2005. Hart was interim coach of the team, following the appointment of Dale Mitchell prior to the tournament. Mitchell was unavailable due to his responsibility as head coach of the Under-20 team in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada. Nine members of the squad had played on the 2005 Gold Cup team and the team had a mix of European based players (12) and players with clubs in Major League Soccer (eight) or the United Soccer Leagues (three). As a result, preparation was limited prior to the tournament. The experienced Pat Onstad was drafted into the squad following an injury in training to Greg Sutton and he proved to be a valuable member of the team with his confident and composed play. The back line of four was anchored by All-Star Richard Hastings, alongside 21-year-old Andrew Hainault in the centre of the defense. The experienced Paul Stalteri impressed with his technical play and movement on the right side of the defense, which resulted in a well-deserved honourable mention in the All-Star Team. Los Angeles Galaxy defender, Ante Jazic, was also effective in a similar role on the left side of the defense. Martin Nash played as a front sweeper in front of the defensive line and was excellent in his recovery of the ball and passing ability. The remaining four midfield players worked well in recovering the ball and in their combined play in attack. Patrice Bernier comple-
mented his teammates on the right side, whilst on the opposite flank, Dwayne De Rosario was a constant threat with his ability and good handling of the ball. The strength of the team was in the central midfield. Atiba Hutchinson impressed with his workrate, ball recovery and creativity, but it was the outstanding play of Julian De Guzman that impressed all observers and resulted in his well-deserved selection as tournament MVP, as well as a member of the All-Tournament Team. Up front, Rob Friend proved to be a capable target player, with his overall strength and movement. Ali Gerba was a more than capable replacement in a similar role and scored three well-taken goals. Canada proved to be a well-organized and disciplined team with several outstanding players. The opening win over Costa Rica was well-deserved, but the team under-estimated the newcomers from Guadeloupe in the second game and had to rely on a narrow win over the talented Haitian team to reach the quarter-finals. A magnificent display of attacking in the first half against Guatemala resulted in a semifinal match-up against their rivals from south of the Border. It proved to be a typical competitive contest, with a spirited comeback from a 2-goal deficit denied by a controversial call in the closing seconds of the game. Overall, a good tournament for the Maple Leafs as they prepare for World Cup qualifying next year. PLAYING SYSTEM:
4-1-4-1 with a zonal defense, a defensive sweeper (Nash), midfield four and target player STRENGTHS: Compact team, well organized from back to front with good work among their lines and tactical flexibility. Excellent team spirit and good determination. WEAKNESSES: Underestimated their rival (Guadeloupe) in second match. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS:
(6) Julian De Guzman (MF) Tournament MVP. AllTournament team. Excellent ability and skill to get the ball, passing and control and finishing. (14) Dwayne De Rosario (MF) Fast, skilful, defines plays and knows how to get free from marking. Plays for the team. Average Age Of Team - 27 years, 1 month. 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Costa Rica
Costa Rica were making their eighth appearance in the Gold Cup after winning the UNCAF (Central American) Cup earlier in the year. The ticos are the Central American Nation with the most appearances in the semi-finals (4) and were hoping that the influence of former National team player Hernan Medford as head coach would have the desired effect. Medford selected only six returnees from the 2005 squad, with the bulk of the players (20) playing with clubs in Costa Rica, notably Club Deportivo Saprissa who were represented by seven players. The experienced José Francisco Porras was one of those players. The oldest player on the squad, Porras impressed with his handling, positional play, and agility that culminated with a magnificent display of goalkeeping against Mexico in the closely contested quarter-final match and an honorable mention in the All-Tournament Team. The strong and fast Victor Cordero anchored the 3-man backline. He was ably assisted by Jervis Drummond who recovered the ball well on the right side of the defense and Gabriel Badilla, who always gave good service with his passing ability. The mobile and skillful Harold Wallace was effective on the right side of the midfield and Leonardo Gonzalez fulfilled a similar role on the left side of the 5-man midfield. Gonzalez recovered the ball well and gave good service as did Rodolfo Rodriguez, on the right side of central midfield. His partner, Michael Barrantes, also worked hard in both attack and defense. The talented and experienced Walter Centeno was the dominant offensive midfielder with his precise passing and goal-scoring ability. One of
his three goals was a well-taken free kick against Guadeloupe. Centeno, selected as a member of the All-Tournament Team, was very effective playing behind the mobile twin strikers, Alvaro Saborio and Rolando Fonseca. Saborio proved to be a fast, skillful and hard-working striker and he was complemented well by Fonseca with his service, combined play and recovery of the ball. The ticos proved to be a talented unit in their games; mainly the result of the skill and movement of their midfield players and forwards. They maintained a lot of possession in games because of their dribbling ability, overused at times, as well as their passing. It was in the final third that the team had some problems. The preference was to move the ball as close as possible to the opponents’ goal to try to shoot. In the end, the team had to rely on the distance-shooting ability of Walter Centeno, who scored all the team’s three goals in the games. The ticos started off the tournament with a narrow loss to Canada; recovered well to gain a respectable draw against Haiti after out-shooting their opponents in the game. Centeno’s superb free kick was the difference in the final group game against Guadeloupe. The inspired play of goalkeeper Porras was not enough to beat Mexico in the quarter-finals. Overall, some positive aspects as the team begins preparations for World Cup qualifying and hopes of another appearance on the World’s stage in 2010. PLAYING SYSTEM: 3-4-1-2 in most games with (10) Centeno as offensive midfielder playing behind the two strikers. STRENGTHS: Excellent individual skill. Skillful in their combinations. Precise passing in the back. Ability to fight for the ball. Organized and disciplined defense. WEAKNESSES: In first two games, dropped back into defense after scoring the opening goal in the game. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (7) Rolando Fonseca - Excellent panorama of the game. (10) Walter Centeno - Member All-Tournament Team. Mobile and talented attacking midfielder who can score goals. Average Age Of The Team - 28 years, 4 months. Oldest Player - José Francisco Porras, 36 years, 7 months. Youngest Player - Windell Gabriel 22 years, 4 months.

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Cuba
Cuba were making their fourth consecutive trip to the Gold Cup. A record for teams from the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) who were providing four teams to the 2005 tournament. Coach Raul Gonzalez was an assistant in the 2005 team and he brought a squad of 20 players who were playing with club teams in Cuba. Five players were representing the Villa Clara Club and 11 had played in the 2005 Gold Cup. The familiar face of Odelin Molina was between the posts. The oldest player in the tournament, he would again impress with his agility, distribution and ability to read the game. The back four relied a lot on the experience and leadership qualities of Yenier Marquez in the centre of the defense. Reysander Fernandez was his usual partner, an effective defender, sometimes indecisive at crucial times in games. The steady Gisbel Morales played on the right side of the defense while, in contrast, on the opposite side Silvio Pedro Miñoso provided good attacking flair as well as good support to the central defenders. Jaime Colome, with his hard work and ball-winning ability, was a key figure in a defensive role in the centre of the midfield. The clever Pedro Faife provided good attacking options at the right side of the midfield. On the opposite flank, the other returning member of ‘Los Tres Amigos’ from the 2005 squad, Alain Cervantes, again impressed with his skill, speed and attacking flair. Osvaldo Alsonso in central areas of the midfield, had a huge workrate and was the main supply line to the front players. Overall, the midfield was organized and disciplined, but at times lacked creativity.
The main attacking threats came from Reynier Alcantara and Leonel Duarte who caused problems for opposing defenders with their quick interchanging and tactical wing play. Both players worked well together and were not afraid to take shots on goal. Overall, the Cubanos were a fit, tactically organized team, always ready for hard work. The team, despite having a nucleus of good technical players, were unable to change the pace of the game, regardless of the score. This, despite a good performance in their opening game when Mexico prevailed with a scrappy second-half goal after Alcantara had given Cuba the lead. The team did well in the second group game against Panama, only to show some defensive deficiencies in losing 5:0 to a Honduras team in which Carlos Pavon scored 4 goals. Overall, a disappointing tournament for Cuba, but encouraging performances from some of the younger players on the team: notably, Alonso, Cervantes, Faife and Duarte give hope for the future. PLAYING SYSTEM: Flexible 4-4-2 with adjustments from match to match or even during the game. Mainly flat back 4 with (14) Colome playing a defensive role in central midfield. STRENGTHS: Great determination – never gave up. Good planners. WEAKNESSES: Insufficient skilled players. Inconsistent play. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (2) Silvio Pedro Minoso (D), Solid defender, likes to get forward. (3) Yenier Marquez (D), Good leader, makes good tactical decisions. (18) Reynier Alcantara (F), Good, mobile attacker. Average Age Of Team - 25 years, 6 months. Oldest Player - Odelin Molina, 42 years, 10 months. Youngest Player - Leonel Duarte, 19 years, 10 months.

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
El Salvador
El Salvador were making their fifth appearance in the Gold Cup and were hoping to achieve the success of the 2002 and 2003 teams that reached the quarterfinals. Carlos De Los Cobos was in charge and he selected a squad of home-based players that included Ronald Cerritos after his stint in Major League Soccer. Juan Gomez was the starting goalkeeper in the opening two games and had shown his ability as a shot stopper. An injury, however, in the 44th minute of the key game against Guatemala, ended his tournament, and both the other goalkeepers, Dagoberto Gamero and Miguel Montès, were used in the remaining games. The zonal back four utilised Alexander Escobar as a sweeper, supporting 20-year-old José Henriquez in the centre of the defense. Both full backs, Leonel Guevera and Alfredo Pacheco proved to be good and mobile with good technical skill, with Pacheco the more effective. In the central midfield area Ramon Sanchez and Dennis Alas provided good balance between attack and defense and both scored in the opening game against Trinidad and Tobago. The flank players used the width well, especially José Martinez when he came on as a substitute in the opening game. Victor Hugo and Ramiro Carballo alternated on the left side of midfield. The team lacked a playmaker, but Sanchez and Alas both provided good support. Up front, the experienced Ronald Cerritos impressed with his technical skills, especially in one versus one situations. He was usually partnered with Juan Campos or Eliseo Quantanilla, with the industrious Quantanilla the more effective, especially in one versus one situa-
tions. Attacking play usually featured a controlled build-up with some very good inter-passing and possession, with occasional fast transition from defense to attack. Flank play was very limited (averaged 10 cross balls a game) as was the finishing, especially in the last two games when only 1/15 goal attempts was on target. Overall, El Salvador was a well-organised team of players, with good technical skills, especially in passing and control, which resulted in a lot of possession, even in the game against USA (50/50 possession) Overall, there some positives in the tournament for El Salvador. The Cuscatlecos showed good character in coming from behind to defeat Trinidad and Tobago and lost two key players to injury in the key game against Guatemala. The final game against the eventual champions, USA, showed the benefits of having players who can be effective in their attacking third play. Lessons that can be learned as the team prepares for the allimportant World Cup 2010 qualifying games next year. PLAYING SYSTEM: 4-4-2 but played with a 4-3-3 system in the first half of the opening game against Trinidad and Tobago. STRENGTHS: Technical skills of players. Support play. Short passing. Team mobility. WEAKNESSES: Flank play. Finishing. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (11) Ronald Cerritos, (M/F) Technical skills. (17) Dennis Alas (M) Hard-working. Distributes ball well. (19) Alfredo Pacheco (D) Mobile defender with good technical skills. Average Age Of The Team - 25 years, 1 month. Oldest Player - Ronald Cerritos, 32 years, 5 months. 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Guadeloupe
Guadeloupe qualified for their first-ever Gold Cup after finishing fourth in the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) qualifying tournament in Trinidad & Tobago. Roger Salnot has been in charge of the national team since 2001 and he selected an experienced squad. Twelve players were based with European clubs (eight in France) with the remaining players in local leagues, including the veteran, Former French National team player, Jocelyn Angloma. Goalkeeper Franck Grandel played in all five games, only conceded five goals against difficult opponents and impressed with his overall play. As a result, he was named to the All-Tournament Team. The back line of four players was anchored by two experienced central defenders, Alain Vertot and David Sommeil, who impressed with their anticipation, marking ability and positional play. Miguel Comminges was steady at left back and on the opposite side of the field, Michael Tacalfred proved to be a good technical player with his vision and passing ability. The defensive organization also relied on support from the two central midfielders, Stephane Auvray and David Fleurival. Both players were hard-working, recovered the ball well and in the case of Auvray, were able to man-mark opposing players, such as Centeno of Costa Rica. The flank players were more attack-minded. Loic Loval, on the right side, proved to be very effective with his ball control and individual technical skills. Aurelien Capoue operated on the opposite flank and in other areas of the field. An outstanding playmaker, he was one of the best players on the team, by virtue of his control and
speed in the counter-attack. Up front, Richard Socrier was a mobile target player, especially effective in counter-attacks. He was mainly partnered by the experienced Jocelyn Angloma, who showed his class by his opportunist goal against Canada, as well as by his overall play that resulted in an honorable mention for the All-Tournament Team. Cedrick Fiston was also used as an attacking player, interchanged with Socrier and impressed with his skills and shooting ability. Guadeloupe proved to be a sound technical team that was able to adapt well to the flexible 4-4-2 system. The team created a lot of opportunities with their combined play and passing ability in all areas of the field. The one versus one skills of several players and their effective counter-attacks also made them a difficult opponent. Defensively, their ability to mark closely and pressure was a key factor. It proved to be an excellent tournament for the debutantes. The opening tie against a strong Haitian squad was followed by a surprise win over Canada, and even though they finished with a narrow defeat to Costa Rica, they qualified for the quarter-finals. A magnificent team effort resulted in another excellent win over Honduras and even though they lost a close semi-final to Mexico, the team gained many admirers by their strong performance. PLAYING SYSTEM: A flexible 4-4-2 often using 2 defensive central midfielders in front of the back four players. STRENGTHS: Versatile players. Lines work well together. Fast transition between attack and defence. Marking ability when they lose the ball. Goalkeeping. WEAKNESSES: Defensive line sometimes gets disconnected. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (15) Jocelyn Angloma (F). Experienced, talented team leader (10) Aurelien Capoue (M). Creative two-way player (8) Stephane Auvray (M). Hard working defensive midfielder. (1) Franck Grandel (GK). Outstanding. All Tournament Team. 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Guatemala
Guatemala qualified for their eighth Gold Cup by finishing third at the UNCAF (Central America) Nations Cup. The experienced former Colombian National team coach, Hernan Dario Gomez was hoping that the team would emulate their best-ever performance, a fourth place finish in 1996. There were 11 returnees from the 2005 squad, with Carlos Ruiz and Pablo Melgar the only two foreign-based players. CSD Communicaçiones (seven) and CSD Municipal (six) were well represented in the final squad. Goalkeeper Ricardo Trigueño played in all four games and proved to be a more than capable shot stopper. In front of him, Gomez opted for a zonal back four with the experienced Pablo Melgar and Henry Medina combining well together in the centre of the defense. Both the full-backs, Claudio Albizuris and Gustavo Cabrera, were steady, hard-tackling defenders who liked to get forward in attack. Cabrera was also effective with his long throw-ins in the attacking third of the field. The midfield utilised a variety of combinations in games, but a key figure was tall, dominant defensive central midfielder, Leonel Noriega. Noriega impressed with his ball-winning ability, but an accumulation of yellow cards meant that he missed the allimportant quarterfinal game against Canada. The tall, defensively-minded Carlos Quinones and the steady Rigoberto Gomez were utilised in central midfield to complement Noriega. The speed of Marvin Avila made him an effective option at the right side of the midfield, while the positional play of José Contreras, as well as his goal-scoring ability, he scored the
all-important goal against El Salvador, made him a useful player on the left wing. Overall, however, the flank play was limited. Most attacks relied on a slow, controlled build-up towards Carlos Ruiz, who was often the lone attacker. The technical skills and mobility of the MLS All-Star made him a key figure on the team, but he often lacked support in the attacking third. Guatemala only scored two goals in four games from 14 shots on target. The Chapines proved to be a competitive, wellcoached and tactically aware team that used a variety of formations, especially in midfield, based on available players and opposition. The nucleus of the team were technically skilled players, although at times the team gave the ball away too easily. The narrow loss to the eventual champions, USA, in the opening game was an encouraging start. It was followed by another one-goal game in which they edged their UNCAF rivals, El Salvador, in an important ‘must win’ situation. The tie against a competitive Trinidad and Tobago squad meant a second place finish in Group B. It was unfortunate that they came up against a talented Canadian team in the quarterfinals. The team missed the leadership of Noriega in the centre of the defense and conceded three goals in a brilliant first half display by the Maple Leafs. PLAYING SYSTEM: Usually a 4-1-4-1 with a defensive midfielder (2) Noriega and striker (20) Ruiz, but used 4-2-2-2 against El Salvador and 4-5-1 versus Canada when Noriega was absent. STRENGTHS: Competitive in all areas of the field. Defensive organization. WEAKNESSES: Quality of flank play. Lacked width in attack. Insufficient support for Ruiz in attacking third of field. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (2) Leonel Noriega (M). Tall, dominant central midfielder. (20) Carlos Ruiz (F). Excellent technical skills Average Age Of The Team - 26 years, 7 months Oldest Player - Leonel Noriega, 32 years, 1 month Youngest Player - José Contreras, 21 years, 5 months

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Haiti
Haiti were making their third appearance at the Gold Cup and expectations were high. This, following some fine results in the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) qualifying in which they captured the top spot. Coach Luis Armelio Garcia was able to secure the services of five foreign-based players (three playing with Miami FC in the United Soccer league Division 1) to supplement the mainly home-based squad. Goalkeeper Gabart Fenelon impressed with his agile play and gave good security to his defense. The team played with a well-organized back line of four players in which the two central defenders, Pierre Richard Bruny and JeanJacques Pierre worked well together. Bruny also impressed with his speed and aerial ability. The fullbacks, Stephane Guillaume and Frantz Gilles, were equally effective with their technical skills and speed, making them useful attackers. The five-man midfield utilised either one or two players in a central defensive role. In this regard, Mones Chery and Peter Germain proved to be effective in recovering the ball and initiating attacks. The remaining players were used in a more offensive role, with Michel Boucicaut the playmaker who caused problems with his overall technical skill and speed, as well as his combined play. Brunel Fucien also impressed with his movement and technical skill and he was well supported by Turlien Romulus who adopted a more defensive role whilst moving around the midfield. The overall combined play and movement of Boucicaut, Fucien and Romulus was an important factor in attack in support of the lone striker, Cadet Eliphene. Eliphene
used his speed to good advantage throughout the whole attacking line. Attacking third play was limited because of a tendency to move the ball as close to the opponent’s goal before shooting. The team began all games well, but there was a tendency to lose the team shape and individual players lacked positional sense. It should not detract from the fact that Haiti had some excellent technical players, especially in midfield. Their dribbling and passing ability was impressive at times, although there were occasions when this was not successful due to indecision from individual players. Haiti started the tournament with a competitive game against Caribbean rivals, Guadeloupe in which midfielder Boucicaut gained man of the match honours. He was also to score the equalizer in the comefrom-behind tie against Costa Rica. Canada was too strong in the final group game that eliminated the CFU Champions. Overall, a satisfactory tournament with the performances of some of the younger players a good sign for the future. PLAYING SYSTEM: Flexible 4-5-1 with a back four and, depending on the movement of the players, adding one or two defensive midfielders to the central area, with up to five players supporting one attacker. STRENGTHS: Fast and skillful midfield players WEAKNESSES: Lack of concentration in passing in matches OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (10) J. Michel Boucicaut (M). Excellent individual technique. (4) Peter Germain (M). Recovers ball well. Good projections. (1) Gabart Fenelon (GK). Fine performances. Great personality. 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Honduras
Honduras were making their seventh appearance at the Gold Cup Tournament, but had only qualified from Central American Zone, (UNCAF) following a playoff game against Nicaragua. Coach Reinaldo Rueda was no stranger to Gold Cup competition since he was in charge of Colombia at the last tournament in 2005. There were only five returnees from that event, but there was no shortage of experience in a squad that contained 7 foreign-based players, including two who were playing in China. Orlin Vallecillo proved to be a competent goalkeeper; aggressive at crossed balls, although he was sometimes indecisive at leaving the goal to intercept through balls. The familiar figure of Jorge Samuel Caballeros provided experience and leadership from his sweeper back position. He was again nominated for the All-Tournament Team, this time as an honourable mention. He was partnered by the talented and versatile Maynor Figueroa. A key figure on the team, he moved up into attack well and had excellent recovery ability. The full backs were Oscar Garcia and Emilio Izaguirre; both steady performers with good defensive qualities. The midfield always kept good shape, reduced the passing lanes for opponents and slowed attacks down. Jorge Claros and Amado Guevara were both key players in central areas of midfield. Claros, an aggressive ball winner, impressed with his workrate and passing ability, whilst Guevara also had a good work attitude and moved up into attack well. The flank players, Edgar Alvarez and Emil Martinez, were effective, with Alvarez a good server of crossed balls and Martinez an
aggressive ball winner with good passing habits. Carlos Pavon and Carlos Costly scored 8 of the 10 goals scored in the tournament, with Pavon the top scorer, with five goals, four in the game against Cuba. Pavon proved to be a striker par excellence, good skill, good shot and an excellent header of the ball. A well-deserved selection for the All-Tournament Team. His striking partner, Carlos Costly, also exhibited fine skills, shot well, but was sometimes a little too selfish. The Catrachos were one of the best performing teams in the group stages of the tournament. Wellorganised, with sound tactical principles, their game was always intense, regardless of the state of the game. At times, however, they failed to retain composure when under pressure and lost their focus. This was evident in their overall results. A disappointing opening loss to Panama was followed by a surprising win over Mexico, courtesy of a Costly header in the last minute of play. The Carlos Pavon show was the feature of the convincing win over Cuba, but the team again showed its inconsistency with the surprise defeat in the quarterfinals at the hands of the debutantes from Guadeloupe. If they learn their lessons, they will be hard to beat in the future. PLAYING SYSTEM: 4-4-2 with each player strongly committed to his role. Defenders kept shape at all times, whilst midfielders concentrated on winning the ball and serving the forwards. STRENGTHS: Commanding presence in defensive play. Physically capable in 50-50 balls. Good striker in Pavon WEAKNESSES: Complacency. Some players too individualistic. Committed too many needless fouls. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (9) Carlos Pavon (F). Skill, goal-scoring ability. Top scorer. All-Tournament Team. (3) Maynor Fugueroa (D). Left-sided defender with good attacking traits. Average Age Of Team - 27 years, 2 months Oldest Player - Carlos Pavon, 33 years, 8 months Youngest Player - Emilio Izaguirre, 21 years, 2 months

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Mexico
Four time winners of the CONCACAF Gold Cup™, Mexico were competing in their ninth tournament in 2007. Former National team player, Hugo Sanchez, was now in charge of the team and he was able to assemble a very experienced squad with eight returnees from the 2005 Gold Cup team and five quality imports based in Europe. Six of the home-based players were from CD Guadalajara. The experienced Oswaldo Sanchez took over in goal from Guillermo Ochoa after the opening game and proved his value with key saves in games. In front of him, the back line of four players was anchored by the reliable Jonny Magallon, equally comfortable as either full back or as a central defender. The tall Francisco Rodriguez was also a capable central defender who performed well in the absence of the multi-talented Rafael Marquez, who was only fit enough to play in the final game. The versatile and experienced Ricardo Osorio usually played on the right side of the defence and his high workrate made him equally valuable in attack and defence. Carlos Salcido, on the opposite side of the defence, proved to be very effective in an attacking role. He impressed with his workrate and technical skills, which earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The midfield was well balanced and organised in both attack and defence, with Pavel Pardo and Gerardo Torrado key figures in central midfield. The talented Pardo, an AllTournament Team selection, proved not only to be a great playmaker, but also the team leader. The competitive Torrado impressed with his ball-winning ability and workrate. The flank midfielders were both effec-
tive and used the width of the field well. Alberto Medina created numerous goal-scoring opportunities with his runs and crosses. On the left flank, José Guardado impressed with his speed and technical skills, especially in one versus one situations. Up front, Jared Borgetti had a variety of partners in games, depending on the opponents. Borgetti used his height to good advantage in games and scored two opportunistic goals. The youthful Nery Castillo impressed with his skills as an excellent dribbler, used his pace to good advantage and was an effective finisher. Omar Bravo and the experienced Cauhtemoc Blanco were also used as front players in games. Mexico were sound tactically and were very effective in the midfield although mistakes by individual players sometimes caused loopholes in the defensive play. The team enjoyed long periods of possession in games, due to the technical abilities of the players, especially in the passing and support play The tricolores improved as the tournament progressed and played their best quality of soccer in the final, when star players Rafael Marquez and Nery Castillo were starters. Castillo, along with the other younger members of the team, such as Guardado, Medina, and Ochoa and graduates from the Under-20 team, ensure a bright future for Mexican Football. PLAYING SYSTEM: Flexible 4-4-2 with a sweeper and zonal defence, wellbalanced midfield, often using (8) Pardo as a defensive central midfielder and two strikers. STRENGTHS: Good all-round ability. Excellent cohesion. Mobility. Consistent workrate. WEAKNESSES: Individual errors by inexperienced defenders. Insufficient support for forwards when attacks were built. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (8) Pavel Pardo (M). Great playmaker and leader. AllTournament Team (3) Carlos Salcido (D). Attack-minded defender with great technical skills. All-Tournament Team (18) Nery Castillo (F). Fast and crafty attacker. Average Age Of Team - 27 years, 5 months. 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Panama
Panama were returning for their third Gold Cup and were hoping for a repeat of the 2005 event when they lost to the host country, USA, on penalty kicks in the final. The experienced Alexandre Guimaraes was able to call on 13 returnees from the last tournament. Ten members of the squad were with foreign clubs and of the remaining home-based players, five were with Tauro FC. Jaime Penedo, an All-Tournament selection in 2005, was between the posts and again impressed with his all-round play and shot-stopping ability. In front of him the familiar figure of Felipe Baloy anchored the back four. He was again selected for the All-Tournament Team based on his strong defensive play and leadership abilities. He was usually partnered by Luis Moreno who also impressed with his aerial play. The strong-tackling Carlos Rivera on the left side of the defence gave good support to the central defenders and even scored a goal in the opening game. Roman Torres, on the opposite side of the defence, was also a solid defender, but was sent off in the game against Mexico. The hard-working Juan Perez was a key player in the centre of the midfield providing a valuable link between defence and attack. He was usually partnered by the competitive and aggressive Gabriel Gomez. The skilful Amilcar Henriquez played in a variety of positions down the right flank and proved to be a good passer of the ball. Victor Herrara on the opposite flank was also used in a variety of roles in the team. Up front, Blas Perez was by far the outstanding player on the team, scored three goals and was select-
ed to the All-Tournament Team. Strong on the ground and in the air, he was always a threat to opposing defenders. JosĂŠ Garces, who sometimes partnered Perez, scored one of the best goal of the tournament against Honduras, but was also used in the midfield. Ricardo Philips also played up front and impressed with his speed and workrate. The canaleros proved to be a tough, competitive team as evidenced by the fact that they received 15 yellow cards and three red cards in their four games. This was especially evident in the midfield where the players constantly pressed to win the ball. Individual players were important. Felipe Baloy was a key player in the centre of the defence and up front another AllTournament Team player, Blas Perez, proved to be one of the top strikers in the tournament. Panama again showed their competitive qualities with the opening win over Honduras and the narrow defeat to Mexico in the group stage. It was ironic that they faced the USA again in the knockout round. It proved to be another close game in which a 10-man team was unable to recover from a two-goal deficit despite the magnificent late goal by Perez. Football in Panama continues to progress. PLAYING SYSTEM: Conventional 4-4-2 with each player having specific responsibilities. STRENGTHS: Aerial play WEAKNESSES: Complacency. Poor communication in defence. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (23) Felipe Baloy. Good solid defender. All-Tournament Team (7) Blas Perez. Great shooting and heading ability. All-Tournament Team. Average Age Of Team - 25 years, 7 months Oldest Player - Ricardo Philips, 32 years, 5 months Youngest Player - Reinaldo Anderson, 21 years, 2 months

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago were making their seventh appearance in the Gold Cup, a record for a Caribbean country. This in the year following their first-ever appearance in the World Cup finals in Germany. Wilhemus Rijsbergen, an assistant at that Tournament, was in charge of the squad this time around. It was a relatively inexperienced squad, with only 4 returnees and only one foreign-based player: Daryl Roberts of Sparta Rotterdam, compared to 15 foreign-based players in 2005. Jan Michael Williams played in goal in all three games and had an outstanding tournament, especially in a one-sided game against the USA. In front of him, Keyeno Thomas, a tall, strong central defender, was a steady influence in all the games. He was usually partnered by the tall, dominant figure of Anthony Noreiga. Sean Power played in various positions in the back four, testimony to his technical skills, especially in moving up to support attacks. He was one of three players who started in the right back spot, which proved to be the problem position in defence. The midfield foursome utilised one central midfielder in a defensive role and one in a more advanced role. Ronald Aguilera and Trent Noel in the final game were more defensively-minded, whilst Densill Theobald took on more attacking responsibilities. The team lacked an overall playmaker, although Theobald was more effective in the final group game. Silvio Spann was a very effective rightsided player in either the defence or midfield. Technically skilled, he scored a stunning 40-yard goal from a free kick in the opening game against El
Salvador. Andrei Pacheco was equally effective in either the defence or midfield on the opposite side of the field and impressed with his one versus one skills. Gary Glasgow was the most effective attacker; opportunistic, he was always dangerous in one versus one situations. The tall, strong Errol McFarlane came off the bench to score with a well-taken header in the final group game against Guatemala. Overall, the attacking play of the Soca Warriors was limited, especially in the opening two games. There was some improvement in the final game in terms of possession and service to the strikers. Trinidad & Tobago proved to be a disciplined and well-coached team. Competitive in all three games, they impressed with their athleticism and team speed. Their fighting spirit was shown in their final game when they tied Guatemala after playing with 10 men for 60 minutes. The relatively inexperienced squad can look back on the tournament with some satisfaction. A late winning goal conceded against El Salvador, a competitive game against the eventual champions, USA and a positive result in the final game. PLAYING SYSTEM: 4-4-2 with one central midfielder in a defensive role and one in an offensive role. STRENGTHS: Competitive qualities. Overall team speed in attack/defence. Solid defensive play. Goalkeeping – an excellent last line of defence. WEAKNESSES: Finishing – poor quality of goal attempts. No midfield playmaker. Limited flank play. (quality and quantity) OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (21) Jan Michael Williams. Outstanding goalkeeping. (16) Silvio Spann. Technical skills. Spectacular 40-yard free kick goal Average Age Of Team - 25 years, 7 months. Oldest Player - Trent Noel, 31 years, 5 months Youngest Player - Keon Daniel, 20 years, 5 months

2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup
USA
The defending Gold Cup Champions were, along with Mexico, competing in their ninth tournament. New coach, Bob Bradley, was hoping to continue a winning trend that had seen the USA go unbeaten in firstround group matches. There were only eight returnees from the championship squad and over 50% of the players were in the rosters of teams in Major League Soccer. One of the 11 foreign-based players, Tim Howard, (Everton, England) played in four games, only conceded 2 goals and impressed with his confident all-round play, that included a remarkable reaction save in the closing minutes in the final. The experienced Kasey Keller was a more than capable back-up. The zonal back four was anchored by the two tall, physical central defenders Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra, both dominant in the air, but prone to cards. Onyewu was sent off in the opening game and Bocanegra received three yellow cards in the tournament. Both the fullbacks, the experienced Frankie Hejduk and newcomer Jonathan Bornstein, liked to get forward and were good two-way players. Hejduk was a deserving member of the All-Tournament Team. Various combinations were utilised in the midfield with either one or two defensively-minded central midfielders, but the team was always well-balanced. All-Tournament Team member Pablo Mastroeni impressed with his overall workrate and movement off the ball and could adapt to either defensive or offensive roles. Benny Feilhaber was another hard-working member of the central midfielders and scored the winning goal in the final with a
magnificent volle. On the flanks, DaMarcus Beasley utilised his technical skills to good effect on the left side of the midfield, used the width of the field well and was always a danger in one versus one situations. Two goals and two assists, testimony to his value to the team, as was his selection as honourable mention in All-Tournament Team. 19-year-old Michael Bradley was used in a variety of roles in midfield, either in wide or central positions and showed potential with his technical skills. Landon Donovan was used either as a wide midfield player or as a forward in games and was always a danger, especially in one versus one situations. He scored all of his four goals on penalty kicks and was an honourable mention on the All-Tournament team. Clint Dempsey was one of a pool of talented strikers. A versatile attacker, he scored a well-taken goal in the opening game. Fellow strikers Taylor Twellman, Ed Johnson and Brian Ching all saw action in games. Testimony to the bench strength of the Stars and Stripes, saw every player, but third choice goalkeeper Brad Guzan, play some part in the tournament. The USA proved to be a well-organised, wellcoached team that had few weaknesses. Hard-working and focussed, it proved too dominant in the group stages and showed its character in the competitive semi-final game against Canada and in the final when it came from behind to defeat a strong Mexican team. An encouraging start for new head coach Bob Bradley. PLAYING SYSTEM: Flexible 4-4-2 with various midfield combinations. STRENGTHS: Team shape and organisation. Support play in attack and defence. Transition play. Attacking third play (width and mobility) WEAKNESSES: Problems in defence against fast, mobile opponents. OUTSTANDING PLAYERS: (1) Tim Howard (GK). Confident, all-round goalkeeper (2) Frankie Hejduk (D). Mobile fullback – All Tournament Team (4) Pablo Mastroeni (M). Hard-working midfielder – AllTournament Team (10) Landon Donovan (M/F). Attacking skills (7) Damarcus Beasley (M). Talented midfielder, 1 v. 1 skills Average Age Of Team - 26 years, 6 months Oldest Player - Kasey Keller, 37 years, 7 months Youngest Player - Michael Bradley, 19 years, 11 months

SOLDIER FIELD Campus at 1410 S. Museum Campus Drive. Chicago Year Opened: 1924 Capacity: 63.130 Website: http://www.soldierfield.net/
Reliant Stadium has been the host to some of the most exciting soccer matches in the United States since opening its doors just over two years ago. Matches have featured both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, the Mexican National Team, Mexican club teams and European powers. The biggest soccer match, held at Reliant Stadium, was an exhibition featuring the U.S. vs. Mexico in 2003. The crowd of 70,000 was the largest to watch a soccer game in Texas and was voted the best U.S. Soccer crowd of 2003. Reliant Stadium has hosted matches for the first two editions of InterLiga (2004 and 2005), staging the finals this month. With a capacity of 70,000 and a community that is both knowledgeable and passionate about soccer, Reliant Stadium will continue to be a favorite venue for both teams and fans to celebrate the sport. Since its inauguration, Reliant Stadium has been the home of the Houston Texans of the NFL and also hosted the Super Bowl XXXVIII in February 2004.
Soldier Field is where the Chicago Bears of the NFL play their home games. This stadium was re-opened on September 27, 2003. In 1987, the New Soldier Field was registered as a National Historic place. Some of the most famous events at the stadium include the Pan-American Games of 1959, FIFA World Cup 1994, and the FIFA Woman’s World Cup 1999. Soldier Field hosted both semi finals and the final of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The year 2007 marked a new dawn in professional football’s approach to preventative healthcare when CONCACAF specifically requested Chiropractic Doctors, to provide musculoskeletal care, be available for all referees, CONCACAF personnel/support staff and member athletes of participating national teams at all Gold Cup venues. Treating personnel consisted of a core group of sixteen Chiropractic Physicians, two certified Athletic Trainers, and one Physical Therapist. The support personnel were comprised of eight licensed massage therapists and twenty-one Chiropractic interns. This team collaborated care with established medical personnel to combine and provide full spectrum preventative and injury care to CONCACAF participants and attendees. To date, this is the largest organized Chiropractic effort in professional football history, to our knowledge, which was embraced, as reflected by the following treatment overview. CONCACAF Referees, associated CONCACAF personnel and delegates, and 17% of the national teams, to include Panama and Honduras, elected to receive continual care from this healthcare team. The 19 member group was selected to attend based on their extensive knowledge and specialties in natural sports medicine, orthopedics, and functional neurology, as well as past Olympic level service and/or participation as a commissioned provider of professional sports teams of various disciplines. With one exception, all providers were required to have advanced certification in Graston Technique™ and possess experience in sports related Kinesiotape methods. Final tally of services provided at the 2007 Gold Cup venues, including the preliminary fitness test for CONCACAF referees, were favorable. One hundred-one patients were treated, and 133 exams were performed, including re-exams and assessments as patients progressed through venue relocations. Two hundred and twenty-three treatment sessions were utilized, including follow up and progressive visits. Of the 101 patients, 59 received a collective 96 Graston™ treatments for Instrumentassisted soft tissue mobilization and increased range of motion. One-hundred and seventeen chiropractic manipulations were administered, accompanied by 78 sessions of PNF stretching and trigger point therapy, 65 visits for sports and general massage, 40 sessions of my facial release, 10 Kinesiotaping recipients, three precursors therapies, one athletic taping, and one electrical stimulation application. At conservative cost estimate in services that were voluntarily provided, the total fiduciary contribution donated summed at $20,660 for the seven treatment locations.
Final Statistics Isolated medical injury reports during the contest were noted in the case of an athlete related adductor tear, and a separate incidence of a grade 1 Sartorius strain. A non-athlete report consisted of a grade 2 thoracic paravertebral muscle strain. Most commonly treated conditions included, but are not limited to, thoracic and lumbar erector spine and quadratus lumborum muscle spasm, psoas, hamstring, and triceps surae hypertonicity, as well as lumbar spine and pelvic segmental dysfunction. These conditions are typically associated with reduced range of motion and flexibility, usually accompanied by sequela including mid to low back, hip, knee, and ankle pain, mild to moderate edema, soft tissue inflammation, and related joint restriction. Graston Technique™ was applied in two capacities, edema reduction and to decrease fascia restrictions. Of 223 total treatment applications, two incidences were reported with associated discomfort post treatment. One related to mild to moderate inflammation of the anterior deltiod insertion after Graston TM therapy was received, and one incidence of moderate irritation post manipulation of the lumbar spine which was reported resolved at the following visit, both patients were over 65 years of age. All other treatments administered reported positive prognosis, regression of symptoms, and increased function. At the contest conclusion, overall data suggests an injury-free tournament for CONCACAF referees and related member athletes for who elected care. Further statistical analysis is in progress, and although no comparative studies have been performed due to this being the first of its kind, we are hopeful that upon invitation to continue care at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup™, that we may employ a comparative study in the next technical report published on this matter of interest.
