F

or many, a holiday offers the chance to relax and unwind. Their precious time away from the daily routine is spent doing as little as humanly possible and indulging in as many luxuries as their budget will allow. But what if you’re bored with the beach? What if two weeks by the pool with a good book and some relaxing music is your definition of tedium? Maybe a break from work is an opportunity to challenge yourself, to try something a bit more memorable than sipping a mojito with sand between your toes. Forget

African safari

The great-grandfather of the adventure holiday, the big-game safari remains one of life’s great adventures. While modern safari-goers enjoy the safety of purposebuilt vehicles, and the comfort of luxury accommodation, a close encounter with African megafauna is guaranteed to thrill. The ‘Big Five Safari’ in Kenya comes

with a shorter itinerary of six nights, making it ideal for first-timers who just want a taste of safari life. You’ll get to visit the wilderness of Tsavo West, followed by Amboseli, with its stunning views of Kilimanjaro and close encounters with some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. Day one will entail travelling from the UK to Nairobi, followed by a transfer to your hotel for a relaxing overnight stay. On day two, set off to Tsavo West National Park, located in the Coast Province in south-east Kenya, where you will experience open

grasslands, dense woodlands and the world’s lengthiest lava flow. Here, there is the chance to spot rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion, waterbuck, lesser kudu, giraffe and gerenuk. In the evening, you’ll return to your luxury tented accommodation and safari lodge. Spend the rest of the week travelling to more of Kenya’s beautiful National Parks and, if you’re hungry for more, you can extend your holiday when the safari is over. From £1,983 per person. kuoni.co.uk

Thanks to 136 kilometres of perfectly prepared pistes to suit all difficulty levels, everyone from beginners to pros will have fun here. therworldly, enchanting and majestic, the Sagano bamboo grove is a photographers delight, but pictures alone cannot convey it’s full beauty. In 1996, Japan’s Ministry of the Environment included the gentle rustling of the bamboo here in its “100 soundscapes of Japan”. As with many of the world’s iconic beauty spots, the bamboo grove can get very crowded, so avoid weekends, and visit early in the morning for a serene and calming experience. Arashiyama is easily accessible from Kyoto by train, and offers a wealth of sights to see in addition to the towering bamboo forest. The Tenryu-Ji Temple, the Okochi-Sanso Villa, and the Togetsukyo Bridge (Moon Crossing Bridge) are among Arashiyama’s other attractions. CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

In the UK, a 100th birthday is famously marked by receiving a telegram from the Queen. But what happens when a country hits its century mark? 2018 offers Latvia and Estonia the chance to show the world how it’s done. Meanwhile, further south, Chile can top that by celebrating 200 years of independence from Spain. We take a look at what these destinations have planned LATVIA

Latvia’s tourist board previously described the country as “the land that sings”, and Latvians have something to sing about in 2018 as the country celebrates the centenary of its declaration of independence from Russia. There are numerous events planned, including film screenings and a song and dance event to celebrate the best of Latvian Culture. This year’s Staro Light Festival in Latvia’s capital, Riga, is sure to be particularly spectacular. 2018 looks set to be a great year to explore Latvia as the Gothic spires and cobbled streets of Riga offer a stunning backdrop to the celebrations. A third of Latvia’s population is concentrated in Riga; a vibrant and cosmopolitan city sure to delight visitors. If you’re looking for something a little more peaceful and scenic, however, Latvia has that covered too. Latvia’s coastline stretches for hundreds of miles along the 16 i ns pired- travel.co .u k

Baltic and is largely undeveloped with pine forests meeting whitesand beaches. Over half of the country is covered by forests and conservation is important here. As part of the centenary, the country is organizing a “Big clean up” in April with the aim of making Latvia the cleanest

ESTONIA

Also celebrating 100 years since declaring independence is Latvia’s northerly neighbour, Estonia. As well as promising “a party in every village”, Estonia is hosting the Winter Swimming World Championships, a BMX and skateboarding competition, and almost 100 high-level art events aimed at celebrating the centenary. Estonia’s capital, Tallinn, not only contains a beautifully preserved medieval old town but also ranks as one of the best-value destinations in Europe. Well served by budget airlines, getting here, staying here and eating here will not cause undue strain on your wallet. Compact, fashionable, beautiful, with a thriving culinary scene, Tallinn is among the continent’s most captivating cities, and the centenary celebrations will only add to its appeal in 2018. visitestonia.com/en

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

Santiago, Chile

CHILE

Hotly tipped as one of 2018’s “must visit” destinations, Chile will be holding bicentennial celebrations in 2018. The country has already celebrated its bicentennial in 2010 because the process of independence from Spain began in 1810. However, the country was not completely free of Spanish rule until 1818. This offers Chileans the perfect excuse to re-start the party in 2018 and you can be sure they won’t pass up on the opportunity. Independence celebrations are focused between the 18-19 September each year, but the festivities commonly last up to a week. Over 2,600 miles long, but

(on average) little more than 100 miles wide, Chile spans a wide climatic and geographical range. From the impossibly arid Atacama in the north to glacial fields in the south, Chile plays host to many pristine natural environments. As well as the volcanoes, ancient forests, fertile valleys, fjords and dunes, you’ll also find some vibrant and sophisticated cities. Santiago alone is home to 40 per cent of the country’s population and offers visitors the chance to experience some energetic nightlife. Wine from Chile has found admirers all around the world, so aficionados may be drawn to the Colchagua valley to see the noble grapes ripening in the sun. chile.travel/en

omplaining about the state of our weather is a national passtime for the British. Many Brits cite seeking sunshine as the number one reason to take a trip abroad. UK holidaymakers do tend to stick with their perennial favourites; visits to Spain alone account for almost a quarter of holidays from the UK. Research has also shown that as many as 80 per cent of British holidaymakers have returned to the same resort multiple times. While familiarity can be a good thing, getting to know where the best restaurants are, forming friendships with local people, the security of knowing exactly what you will get from your trip. For us, travel is all about new

experiences. Here we’re taking a look at some more unusual holiday choices. If you’re interested in getting out of your comfort zone and having a tale to tell when you return, read on.

Polar cruising

A trip to the Arctic or Antarctic is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and differs a considerable amount from your typical holiday destination. Combining the comfort of cruising and the excitement of a safari, spot polar bears in the frozen north or walk among penguins in the south. As with other cruises, a polar voyage can take many forms, with a range of packages offering different routes and experiences. Perfect for first-timers,

Polar Routes’ Classic Arctic cruise, lasts around eight days. This journey around the icy Svalbard islands in Norway is ideal for those who are looking for an introduction to the polar regions. The cruise sets off from Longyearbyen, where you will be able to explore the town before striking out to sea in the afternoon. Over the next five unforgettable days, you’ll spend time exploring some of the most remote locations on the planet. There is no fixed programme for which sites the ship will visit, the captain will decide each day, steered by which areas offer the best opportunity to spot wildlife and most favourable conditions for exploration. TRAVEL past enormous glaciers, while keeping an eye out for walrus, polar bears, reindeer and even whales. Excursions onto land offer the chance to get closer to the wildlife and experience the magnificent scenery from a different perspective. Wreck diving in Scotland

With its rich culture and natural beauty, Scotland attracts visitors from across the globe. Well known for its traditional castles, historic cities and scenic lochs, Scotland does have other, less wellknown attractions. While the majority of Scotland’s history sits above sea level, the wrecks of the German High Seas Fleet rest at the bottom of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. Sheltered by the islands of Burray, Graemsay, Hoy, Mainland and South Ronaldsay, Scapa Flow has been used by ships for over a thousand years. After the defeat of Germany in the first World War, 74 ships from the Imperial German Navy’s Fleet were interned at Scapa Flow. In 1919, after being held captive for seven months, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter ordered his men to scuttle the fleet. Almost 100 years later, seven of the scuttled ships are accessible to scuba divers offering a chance to explore the aftermath of a significant historical event. The site is regularly rated among the top dive sites in Europe, if not the world; few other places can offer such an abundance of wrecks in relatively shallow, benign diving conditionsIn addition to the ships themselves, a fascinating variety of wildlife populates the area, including seals and basking sharks. Beyond diving, the Orkney Islands also offer Europe’s most complete Neolithic village at Skara Brae, and the majestic stone circle known as 2 2 i nsp ire d -tra v e l . co.uk

The Ring of Brodgar, as well as its gorgeous, unspoilt landscapes. Prices start at £85pp with the ‘Try a Dive’ half-day course. Visit scapascuba.co.uk for more information.

Cycling The Via Claudia Augusta

For the traveller who likes to soak up new places at a sedate pace, under their own steam, what could be better than a cycling tour? Take in the scenery, enjoy fresh air and get fit while you’re doing it, its an all-round winner for the active holidaymaker. If a tour through captivating Alpine scenery on clearly-marked, wellsurfaced cycleways sounds appealing,

the Via Claudia Augusta may well be for you. It’s an international cycling route taking its name from a 200-yearold Roman road, built by Roman Emperor Claudio Augustus. The route runs between southern Germany and northern Italy, passing through Austria (and briefly Switzerland) along the way. The full route spans over 320km, more than all but the most dedicated cyclist would wish to tackle in a single trip. Luckily, cycle tour experts Saddle Skedaddle offer an eight-day, self-guided trip that covers less than 200km, starting in southern Austria and finishing at Lake Garda. Setting off on the slopes of Zugspitze and followed by a relaxing night in Lermoos, the journey crosses the

border into Italy via the Reschen Pass, where incredible panoramic views open up as you glide down into the Vinschgau Valley. The route takes in vineyards, apple plantations and historic castles, and offers ample opportunity to sample the region’s famous food and wines. From there, explore the hustle and bustle of the city of Trento, with its 13th-century castle. Burn off the gelato and pizza during the final leg, through the Sarco Valley and on to Lake Garda for a well-earned day of rest and recuperation. Prices start from £1,520. olidaymakers aren’t as predictable as they used to be. The world offers a more diverse and accessible travel market with previous niches becoming the norm and those hard-to-reach places becoming reachable. One of the biggest changes is who we go on holiday with. It’s no longer restricted to family friendly resorts, romantic weekend breaks or a funpacked getaway with friends – as the world becomes more accessible, we are becoming braver and stepping out to explore the world on our own. All you need do is attend a dinner party or two and you will hear about travels

and adventures all over the world, from a stressed out mum needing some ‘me time’ to a workaholic spending her spa weekend solo. And it seems that even more of us are due to jump on the bandwagon this year. A recent survey revealed that 69 per cent of Brits say they’ll be flying solo when it comes to their next holiday and that’s not all – 29 per cent said they want to explore a new destination – we are feeling brave, aren’t we? Not content on simply going it alone, we also don’t want to communicate with anyone back in the office while we’re busy escaping, with 75 per cent

of us wanting to completely unplug from our jobs. We need to doff our berets to the French here they’ve just won the ‘right to disconnect’ outside of work hours. The whole point of a holiday is to relax, unwind and forget about the stresses and strains of work so you can go back to normal life refreshed and ready to go. There’s even been an increase in retreats that specialise in ‘no technology holidays’ where all phones, laptops, tablets and anything else with plugs and buttons are banned. The biggest statistic from this survey was a massive 230 per cent increase in traffic to the websites of women-only

TRAVEL ADVICE

travel companies. As the owner of a women-only retreat in Bali, this resonated with my whole reason for starting this business. There is a real need for us to take more time out. I speak to women every day who have felt the need to escape everything and everyone and to reconnect with themselves. It’s like a reset button: stop, and take stock, refocus and then you’re ready to go again. Most women I meet are frantically juggling families, careers, homes, friends and other commitments leaving precious little time for themselves. This fast-paced and demanding lifestyle can only be maintained for so long before we reach burn-out which is exactly what happened to me and why I started Bliss Sanctuary for Women. However, it can be difficult sometimes to take the solo travel plunge, and equally hard to know how to make the most of your travel time. Here are some top tips for those of you heading out into the world on your own:

The flight • Always pack a comfortable pillow even if it’s one of those ‘U’ shaped neck pillows you can buy in airports. If you’re comfortable, you’ll hopefully sleep and that’s always important when travelling as it can be hard work. • Always have a pair of leggings, warm socks and a cardigan or wrap of some sort – night flights can get really cold. • I have a large light handbag that I can put under the seat in front with everything I need at arm’s length. • To stay fresh carry a spritzer for your face to keep your skin hydrated and a cream for face, hands, arms and legs. • Some carriers have in-flight entertainment designed for your tablet or phone, so it’s worthwhile investing in some headphones before you leave and ensure you download your favourite music and movies.

Luggage

Combat loneliness

• It’s worthwhile having hand luggage on wheels so if you’re stuck in lines you don’t have heavy bags weighing you down. • Backpacking? That’s a whole different scenario. Make sure everything is lightweight and your backpack is the right size and weight for you.

One of the hardest things about travelling on your own can be loneliness. Although you do meet many other people when on your own, there are also times – usually mealtimes – when you can feel a bit exposed. Couples seem to stare at you rather than speaking to each other, and not all of us can go up to every person we see. So arm yourself with a good book or an electronic device. Mealtimes are a good time to catch up on Facebook, download photos, send emails or even Skype. In many countries, restaurants have free Wi-Fi! Music is a great way to elevate your mood.

The language Always try to learn at least a few phrases in another language… hello, goodbye, thank you, excuse me, and learn the word for toilet! I learnt that lesson after travelling to China and needing the toilet urgently in a department store. After playing charades with lots of squatting, the girls still had no idea what I meant and there was no signage to point to. Luckily I saw a McDonalds sign just in time and ran for it!

INSPIRED BY:

ARCHIE HEWLETT ENTREPRENEUR Selling luxury, British-made shoes around the world, Archie Hewlett, founder of premium footwear brand Duke & Dexter is one of the UK’s rising young entrepreneurs. The brand’s celebrity fan base includes Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg and Eddie Redmayne. We caught up with Archie to discover the secret of his success

At what age did you start your business? I started Duke & Dexter at 18 from my family home in Oxfordshire. I never had any real interest in going to university, I was offered a place at Durham however it was more of a tick box exercise to make sure that I had the same opportunities as my friends. It was only when on the verge of going that I realised it was not something I wanted. Can you explain your inspiration for Duke & Dexter? After I deferred my place at Durham University I went into the recruitment industry. During this time I attended a number of black tie events and found myself uninspired by the formal footwear on offer in the market. I became convinced that there was a gap in a market for a velvet slipper or loafer with a contemporary design rather than traditional. So I had a bespoke pair made which drew a lot of attention from friends and colleagues! Now Duke & Dexter shoes are sold in more than 32 inspired- travel.co.u k

100 countries worldwide - with the US being by far our biggest market. We’re also stocked in major department stores across the world, including Harrods and Liberty in the UK, as well as international stores such as Level in Dubai and KaDeWe in Germany. How did you grow your company during the early years? Instagram has been a huge part of our success and we’ve built a following of over 300,000 people across the world. We’ve got a unique and eye-catching product, so it’s understandable that social media has been a major part of our growth so far. I see social media today as a level playing field that allows you to rely on the quality of your products rather than huge marketing teams and budgets. We’ve also been fortunate to have numerous celebrity clients, with Ryan Reynolds, Tinie Tempah and even Snoop Dogg all recently sporting a pair. However, Eddie Redmayne wearing a pair of ‘Bowler

Black’ Duke & Dexter loafers when he won an Oscar in 2015 was a real turning point for Duke & Dexter. Celebrity clients have been an incredible springboard for the brand and gave us a huge amount of credibility, especially in the early days. For a small brand to have exposure like that was huge - especially as I have no background in fashion or design. What makes Duke & Dexter stand out from other manufacturers? We have always been a very ‘British’ brand and we wanted to tap into the quality so-often associated with British fashion, so in 2016 I decided to move production from Italy to a family owned workshop based in Sheffield. This has allowed us to be a truly British enterprise with every D&D shoe being designed in London and Handmade in England. Aside from the British craftsmanship behind each pair, our real point of difference amongst our competitors is our unique designs.

What are your best sellers? Interestingly our best sellers are typically the more unique designs which we’re known for, such as camouflage styles ‘Storm Trooper’ and ‘Stealth Camo’, as well as our ‘Pyramid Black’ pair which has an embossed rubber print. Saying that, some of our conventional styles are also popular, especially ‘Bowler Black’ which our clients often wear at more formal events. With your bespoke hand painted options, is the customer able to choose any image they like? Exactly that, in addition to our customisable bespoke pairs where clients can choose personalised embroidery and trims, we’ve recently started working with Morgan Seaford, an artist based in London who hand paints intricate designs onto Duke & Dexter shoes. Are you still involved in the day-to-day running of Duke + Dexter? Very much so, over the last 4 years I’ve built a dynamic and hardworking team, however, I’m still involved in the dayto-day running of the business. Duke & Dexter is my passion and I intend to

continue driving the brand forward for the foreseeable future. What does the future hold in store for the company? Although Duke & Dexter is now over 4 years old, I honestly believe we’ve only just scratched the surface of what we can achieve. We’re set to launch new stores in the U.S and the Middle East this year, adding to our flagship Covent Garden (London) store. We’ve also started to develop products outside of the loafer category which began with the launch of the Duke & Dexter Chelsea Boot in October last year. Our Chelsea Boots were just the start of what we have in the pipeline - our ambition is to become a truly global footwear brand in the coming years so watch this space! As an exclusive for readers of Inspired Travel Magazine, we have secured a 15% online discount for your first pair of Duke & Dexter shoes at www.dukeanddexter.com. CAPITALS OF

CULTURE

Being crowned as a European Capital of Culture is a prestigious and fruitful award for any city. In 2008, Liverpool joined the likes of Amsterdam, Lisbon, Prague, Madrid and Paris among the winners. A decade on, Inspired Travel Magazine takes a look at what the award meant and how its legacy affected the Liverpool and the UK

E

ach year, the EU awards the title of European Capital of Culture to two cities, and the recipients are then expected to organise a programme of cultural events to span this tenure. It’s an excellent opportunity for the cities to generate significant social and economic benefits and is often the catalyst for urban regeneration. Launched in 1985, and formerly known as the European City of Culture, the process is the brainchild of Melina Mercouri and Jack Lang, who were ministers for culture in Greece and France respectively. Mercouri believed culture didn’t have the same stature in society as politics and economics and decided that a project promoting European culture was needed. Culture is defined as being “the

manifestations of human intellectual achievement” and encompasses visual and performing arts as well as architecture and literature. With such a diverse and culturally vibrant capital as London, it’s easy for visitors to the UK to overlook other destinations. This would, of course, be a huge mistake and the 2008 European Capital of Culture award allowed Liverpool to step into the limelight. Liverpool is famous worldwide for its musical output, and The Guinness Book of World Records named it as the World Capital City of Pop in 2003. Artists from Liverpool have produced more number-one singles than residents of any other city in the world, with many of them being the work of the city’s four most famous sons. Ask anyone what springs to mind when you

mention Liverpool and they’re likely to say “The Beatles”. You can visit a museum dedicated to the fab four, as well as the famous Cavern Club, and the childhood homes of Lennon & McCartney. There’s more to Liverpuddlian culture than pop music; the city has more galleries and museums than any other UK city besides London. The Walker Art Gallery is known as the national gallery of the North and displays an impressive collection of European art. Liverpool has 2,500 listed buildings and 250 public monuments including its cathedral; the largest in Britain and the fifth largest in the world. The city has a long history of performing arts, reflected in numerous annual

theatre festivals, such as the Liverpool Shakespeare Festival, taking place inside Liverpool Cathedral each year. Liverpool is home to some iconic buildings too, including the Titanic Hotel. Set in Liverpool’s Stanley dock, it carries a rich history and culture. The hotel is located in what was the North Warehouse, built in 1846, which lay derelict for many years. Part of the North Warehouse was damaged in an air raid during the Second World War, but years later stands as one of Liverpool’s most interesting buildings. Set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the stylish and spacious 153-bedroom hotel, along with unique event space West Bay and adjoining

incredible Rum Warehouse, has been the catalyst for change in the north of the city. The 153 rooms at the Titanic Hotel are all about the space – wonderful light-filled space, used to perfect effect. The furnishings are rich and earthy, and the bed linen is for sinking into. Each bedroom has the original windows of this incredible building, affording impressive views over the historic Port of Liverpool. Sip coffee or a cocktail at the lounge Rum Bar, overlooking the waters of Stanley Dock or, when the sun is shining, enjoy alfresco dining on the colonnade terrace. Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture saw visitor numbers increase by 34 per cent and over £750m generated for the city’s economy. Media coverage of cultural events in Liverpool doubled, and for the first time in decades, positive stories about the city outweighed negative ones. Research was undertaken after 2008 which indicates that 85 per cent of Liverpool residents feel that the city has become a better place to live since its term holding the title. Recognition of these benefits inspired the establishment of the UK City of Culture

in 2009. This title is awarded once every four years, and the most recent recipient was Kingston upon Hull. Hull is a maritime city with the unenviable distinction of being the second most severely damaged British city during the Second World War and has endured some tough times in recent years. It’s status as UK City of Culture, however, has seen record numbers of visitors drawn to the city. Hull began its City of Culture tenure with a week-long event, “Made in Hull” which attracted over 300,000 people. Hull boasts an abundance of free museums, including the Hull and East Riding Museum for archaeology and local history, the Streetlife Museum and the Ferens Art Gallery. Hull’s long seafaring history is celebrated in both the Maritime Museum and the Arctic Corsair; a deepsea trawler converted into a museum. Another of Hull’s most visited attractions is The Deep, one of the world’s most spectacular aquariums where visitors can see thousands of aquatic creatures.

DRY MARTINI

BY JAVIER DE LAS MUELAS, LONDON

L

ed by the legendary Javier de las Muelas, Dry Martini Barcelona is considered an institution of international cocktail culture. In 2015, the first Dry Martini outpost in Britain opened at the Meliá White House hotel, close to Regent’s Park. Stylish and eclectic, a range of Spanish artwork curated by Javier adorns the walls. Pictures vary from hand-drawn sketches on napkins from Dry Martini Barcelona, through to oil paintings by Keith Hearing and portraits by Matias Krhahn. The common thread throughout is Dry Martini’s celebration of artistry and its centrepiece is a striking picture by Eugenio Recuenco behind the bar. Dark wood panelling and a chequerboard floor are offset with pops of bright colour from the selection of mismatched 50 i ns pired- travel.co.u k

classic style chairs and sofas. The copper-topped bar runs the length of the room, leading to a glass antechamber where shelves are lined with homemade syrups, tinctures, and interesting glassware. This space is the centre of innovation within the bar and guests can catch glimpses of the staff creating some of the elaborate drinks through the glass. It is at the bar that the art of the perfectly made Martini is celebrated, with a three-metre section dedicated to creating this one iconic cocktail. Taking the lead from Barcelona, the team have brought the famous ‘Martini counter’ to London, tallying the number of drinks made at the elegant Martini station. With a choice of 101 gins, guests can request their Martini of choice, or enjoy

the recommendations of the talented and experienced mixologists. Every time a Martini is ordered a stamped certificate is issued to the guest, continuing one of the bar’s traditions. The menu features a range of classic and signature cocktails, which include Javier de las Muelas’ style updates on traditional serves. Dry Martini offers a unique experience for guests; a place where history and invention are simultaneously present throughout the serves and décor, the sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere provides the perfect setting for enjoying a classic favourite cocktail, or discovering something new and exciting. drymartiniorg.com

EATING OUT

THE ANNALENA

EXPERIENCE Follow Inspired Travel Magazine’s Jess Saunders on a taste odyssey, at Vancouver’s outstanding AnnaLena restaurant...

T

ucked away in a quiet residential street just southwest of Vancouver’s city centre lies a true gem of a restaurant: AnnaLena. If you are looking to indulge in some delicious food, inspired by French cuisine, but with an authentic Canadian twist, this is the place for you. My partner and I were seated at the back of the restaurant, close to the kitchens. It was fascinating to glance over at some of the goings on behind the scenes, sometimes catching glimpses of our order being lovingly prepared on the plate by a very focussed sous chef, or the Executive Chef himself, Michael Robbins. After we had taken our seats, we were immediately introduced to the concept of the restaurant, defined by Robbins as ‘modern Canadian’ cooking and centred on the tapas-style idea of sharing. Following the ethos that food is better shared, all items on the menu at AnnaLena are created for two or more people, creating a wonderful atmosphere of togetherness. Looking down at the menu, the choice was ample; small but with plenty of variety, including fish dishes, meat dishes, vegetables, fruits and some surprises. Our waiter explained that the servings increased in size as you made your way down the menu (very small at

the top; very large at the bottom), but there was also the option of a tasting platter, allowing a recommended four or more guests to try a bit of everything. Wanting to get the best and most authentic dining experience possible, we dove straight into the menu, ordering two oysters (4 CAD), the mussel dish (19 CAD), the prawn dish (25 CAD) and the largest dish on the menu, the beef (38 CAD). I have done my fair share of restaurant reviews, but the mussel dish was a serving of food I doubt I will ever forget. Coming out of their shell, prepared to be eaten, in a garlic white wine broth with torn, fresh double-baked bread fried in garlic and thyme oil, the taste sensation was simply divine. My partner and I took one taste and instantly fell in love: this

EATING OUT was a dish I could eat forever. After almost inhaling the mussels, we were served the prawn dish which, was delightful. The prawns came in their shell with picked ponzu daikon (a first for me), clams, miso beurre blanc and burnt Brussels sprouts, which tasted like they were glazed in honey. Now, if anything could have trumped the mussels, it was the beef dish. We were presented with beautiful cuts of rib eye beef with charred broccoli, onion jam, delicate pieces of potato and jus, with a

smoked tallow reduction (a fancy term for beef dripping). 38 Canadian Dollars may seem expensive for a plate of beef, but actually for such a fantastically prepared dish, it represents pretty great value. Plus, it really was incredibly tasty.

The beef melted in the mouth, with a wonderful kick of smokiness added in amongst the sweetness of the onion jam and savoury potatoes that soaked up the jus. It was reminiscent of a roast dinner elevated to loftier heights. I was thoroughly impressed with the bold flavours and striking presentation of the dishes. There was never too much of anything either, but just enough to satisfy your palate, making for a perfectly sized plate each time. There was still room for dessert of course! We ordered the Rosemary Semifreddo and the white Chocolate Mousse (each 9 CAD) to share. I fell head over heels for the rosemary semifreddo and stole it for myself. No sharing this time. Both were incredibly indulgent, just sweet enough but not sickly and completely delicious. The flavour of a savoury herb added a refreshing note. It came alongside fresh strawberries, toasted milk powder crumble and a strawberry sorbet, again all presented very pleasingly. The white chocolate mousse came with sesame toasted mango and passion fruit sorbet, which was simultaneously delicate, zesty and sweet.

The ambiance was romantic and sophisticated, the décor stylish, the service was first-class. With great food, good company and a tasty selection of unique cocktails, you can’t really go wrong here. 1809 W. First Ave., 778–379–4052 5–10:30pm (closed Mondays); weekend brunch 10am-1:45pm

amed by mountain guides who discovered it in the 19th century, Emerald Lake owes its distinctive green hue to glacial sediment suspended in its waters. Situated in Canada’s Yoho Natural Park, close to the Trans-Canadian Highway, the lake’s stunning scenery has made it an irresistable magnet for sightseers. The lake is over 4,000ft above sea level which results in it remaining frozen from November until June. The peaks that surround it, along with local prevailing winds, ensure a very moist climate with heavy rain during summer and large amounts of snowfall in winter. Eagles, wolves, bears and moose are known to frequent the area, making it a truly magnificent location to connect with nature. w w w . i n spi r edtr av el m ag. co . uk 3 7

UK MUM INVENTS A DEVICE THAT HELPS PREVENT BABIES CRYING ON PLANES A crying baby on board can be the pits for passengers and parents alike. This clever mum reckons she’s got the solution...

T

here are few things more frustrating in an aircraft cabin than the sound of a crying baby. Parents of babies on planes have tried any number of things to desperately quell a crying spell, often to no avail. Emma Lovell knows this problem too well. Her mum being diagnosed with a life ending illness saw her endure the flight from her home in Australia to the UK with her newborn in tow and became accustomed to feeling the weight of a cabin-load of deathly stares. “I think the worst thing is the fear of what other people are going to think — that takes over from the concern of why your baby’s crying in the first place,” Ms Lovell said. “You’re trying to comfort the baby but you’re mostly worried about the huffing and puffing from people who A, have no children, B, have left their kids at home, or C, have grown-up children and have completely forgotten how hard it is

to travel with a baby. The trouble comes from the airline bassinets being relegated to high-traffic areas, such as near the bathrooms or service areas, where there was a relentless stream of distraction to bubs trying to sleep. “My daughter was a really good traveller but she just could not sleep with the cabin lights going on and

“ ” I think the worst thing is the fear of what other people are going to think — that takes over from the concern of why your baby’s crying in the first place

off, the person in the next seat turning on their reading light, the food service interruptions, the entertainment screens and every now and then someone smiling and waving at her,” she said. Her baby’s lack of sleep resulted in over-tiredness

and massive meltdowns. So with necessity being the mother of invention, Emma Lovell invented CoziGo – Sleep on the Go. This epic patented invention is a lightweight and compact pop-up canopy that fits on airline-issued bassinettes and eliminates distractions to help babies sleep on a flight. This fully breathable canopy blocks 97 per cent of light and is cleverly designed to fit all prams and strollers as a sleep and sun cover so it’s useful for keeping you baby in their all-important sleep routine whilst in airports, hotels, or by the pool. The product has won multiple awards & accolades including Gold in Mother & Baby Magazine for Best Baby Product and Emma’s appearance on Shark Tank (similar to Dragon’s Den) saw her gain investment from owner of Boost Juice, Janine Allis. She now sells and distributes CoziGo worldwide. cozigo.com

TRAVEL ADVICE

A HOME FROM HOME FOR YOUR

FOUR-LEGGED

FRIEND

DogBuddy, Europe’s leading online dog sitting community, connects you with vetted and reliable dog sitters in your area to provide dog boarding, day care and walking. We caught up with Kiri, a freelance graphic designer, regular traveller, and dog owner, who was excited to tell us about the difference DogBuddy has made to both of their lives

W

e got Yogi (a Karelian Bear Dog) when we were working in New York, he was only a couple of months old and the cutest thing we’d ever seen. Then about two

years ago we made the move to London, where the opportunities for city breaks have been amazing. I think we’ve seen more of Europe than our own country! Yogi loves going on road trips, and particularly enjoyed his week-long trip to the Cotswolds, where we went on loads of hikes. But of course, there are trips we can’t take him on, and being in a new city makes it even more stressful to find someone we can trust our pup with. We found DogBuddy shortly after arriving in London. We’d spent a lot of time researching the best dog care solution for Yogi, so it was great to find a service that’s easy to use as well as trustworthy. All you do is enter your postcode and the dates you need help, and you’ll be shown the available dog sitters nearby. It’s great to read the reviews from other dog owners, and meeting the sitters beforehand is also very reassuring. But of course it’s Yogi’s reaction that matters most, and he loves Anna, one of his regular DogBuddy sitters. He makes his feelings quite obvious every

time we drop him off, wagging his tail and giving her lots of kisses. Booking online through DogBuddy also gives us added peace of mind, as each booking is covered by their vet and public liability insurance. We also like that DogBuddy sitters have access to a vet line 24/7, so they can get expert advice straight away if Yogi is feeling unwell. Also Anna sends us photos and tracked walks through the app which is great because Yogi is very high energy, so we know he’s getting enough exercise. We find there’s always reliable sitters available. The one time we needed someone last minute and our regular sitters weren’t able to take care of Yogi, DogBuddy stepped in and helped us find another sitter, so we’ve never been stuck without dog care. We’re making the most of being here and exploring. We’ve got trips to Belgium, New York and Mexico planned in the next few months. Leaving Yogi behind is the only downside of our trips, but DogBuddy makes it so much easier as we know he’s safe and having a fun holiday too!

TRAVELS WITH YOUR

CAMERA Want to turn your mediocre holiday snaps into excellent travel photography? Here are a few ways to help you to use your camera better when you’re on the move

Y

ou’ve booked your hotel, sorted the insurance and scribbled a list of places to see on the inside cover of the guidebook. The only thing left to organise is your camera. Most of us don’t really plan our holiday snaps in advance, but choosing the right kind of camera gear to take with you can make a huge difference to your photography. The perfect travel camera needs to be good enough to capture amazing images of the things you’ll see on your trip, but also light enough that you can carry it with you all the time. Look for mirrorless cameras like the FUJIFILM X-E3 that can be combined with lightweight zoom lenses. Cameras like this are as featurerich as a DSLR, but are much more lightweight and portable. 8 0 inspired- travel.co.u k

Compose yourself!

Traditionally, photographers use something called ‘the rule of thirds’ to give their compositions some balance. It works like this: imagine splitting up the frame into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. These lines intersect at compositional hot spots – try framing your photos, so the subject lies over one (or lies on a line), instead of in the middle of the frame. The effect will be much more powerful. The rule of thirds is a great starting point, but don’t be afraid to break away from it and find your own style. Consider different angles too: getting down low can give an interesting perspective to architecture, while looking down from high up above a crowd provides a feeling of excitement and drama. Keep an eye out for natural frames within your scenery too; such as fencing or a hole in a wall, which can add a sense of location. Capture well-known tourist landmarks in this way, and you’ll already be on your way towards a set of great holiday photos.

The right light

The saying ‘the early bird catches the worm’ is never truer than in photography. Set your alarm earlier than your travelling companions and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful warm morning light, as well as

fewer fellow tourists wandering into your frame. (Oh, and less guilt from making your mates wait for you while you perfect your shot!) When shooting in the day, be aware of how high the sun is in the sky. Midday sun isn’t the best light for landscape or portraits, so if you find yourself shooting at this time, try to position your subject in the shade of a building or tree. They will look better and won’t be squinting painfully into the sun. Better still, wait until evening and return to a location in the ‘golden hour’– the time just before sunset, when the light is warm, and shadows are long. Perfect for everything from architectural details to candid street photography, and beautiful portraits.

Perfect portraits

Talking of portraits, if you’re travelling with friends or loved ones, make sure you capture some great group shots of everyone together. Not everyone is a natural in front of the lens, so try

taking the (sneaky) candid approach while everyone is relaxing over a drink or cooking together. Getting your friends talking or telling jokes is a great way to relieve photographic tension. And if you pass over your camera to someone else for a couple of shots, switch it to auto mode when they take the reins. Cameras like the X-E3 feature Smartphone-like touchscreen controls for photography at its simplest – compose and tap to take a shot.

The devil’s in the detail

It’s all well and good shooting scenic pictures and filling your frame with the wider view, but don’t forget the small details – they’re a good way of breaking up the more traditional compositions and are a vital component for telling the story behind your trip. Look for door furniture in medieval streets, local delicacies in shop windows, or patterned flooring. The secret is to capture the atmosphere. When it comes to sharing your

photography, don’t wait until you get home. The FUJIFILM X-E3 uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect to your Smartphone and stay connected so that images transfer automatically as you shoot. You’ll be able to post to your social media accounts and send an email postcard home. Plus, if you’re travelling solo, you’ll be able to use your phone as a remote control to shoot super selfies. Balance your camera on a sturdy wall if you don’t have a tripod. Every camera in the FUJIFILM X Series offers excellent portability and is easy to use; making them ideal travel companions. There are 25 lenses in the range too. A good all-rounder is the XF18-135mmF3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR, which is great for wide, open landscapes, close-up details and everything in between. And when you’re travelling really light, a high-quality prime lens like the XF23mmF2R WR is an excellent choice too. Fujifilm-x.com i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 81

PRAGUE CASTLE, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

R

ecognised by The Guinness Book of Records as the largest ancient castle in the world, it attracts around two million visitors per year. Getting to the castle can be as enjoyable and fascinating as the visit itself. Approaching over the bustling Charles Bridge, admiring the baroque statues and taking in views of the castle in the distance. Once across the river, you can wend your way along cobbled streets past ornate buildings as you steadily ascend to the castle itself. The effort that goes into the climb is more than rewarded by the panoramic views of Prague. Alternatively, take the funicular railway to the top of Petrin Hill and stroll down towards the castle past the delightful Strahov Monastery, perhaps stopping at the Monastery’s Brewery for refreshments on the way. Prague Castle is not a single structure but a ‘castle complex’ consisting of several notable buildings, the most imposing being St Vitus’ Cathedral which has looked down upon the Vltava since 1344. Older still is St George’s Basilica, the oldest surviving church building within the castle, founded in 920, expanded in 973, and rebuilt after a fire in 1142. Also worth a look is Golden Lane, a row of 16th-century houses which offer a revealing glimpse into the lives of past citizens of Prague. w w w . i n spi r edtr av el m ag. co . uk 3 3

CRUISE CONTROL

Globally, cruising is very much a growing market with an army of devotees. A significant number of travellers remain immune to cruising’s charms however and will be quick to offer reasons why cruising is not for them. We take a look at this buoyant market sector and attempt to challenge some of those assumptions

8 6 i ns pired- travel.co.u k

CRUISING

B

etween 2009 and 2017, the number of cruise passengers increased by almost 45 per cent from 17.8 million to 25.8 million. “But why? What does a cruise have to offer?” I hear you ask. Imagine visiting a new restaurant and sampling a wide range of dishes on a taster menu. You’ll quickly be able to work out what you like and want to return to, and what you don’t and know to avoid. Cruising can offer a similar experience for your holiday - the chance to see and experience many different locations during one holiday. You may fall in love with some and vow to return for an extended stay, while others may have less appeal and can be ruled out as future holiday destinations. Some people assume that sleeping and relaxing on a boat for a significant amount of your holiday restricts the number of activities you can indulge in and sights you can see. When you consider that a single cruise could offer the chance to visit several Greek islands, a handful of Caribbean nations, or a selection of Mediterranean cities in one holiday, this argument doesn’t seem to hold a lot of water. Possibly the most widespread misconception about cruise holidays is that they’re only suitable for older travellers. It is true that the average cruise passenger is over 50, but research shows that 1.6 million under 18s set sail with their families during 2016. With ships offering a wealth of activities for children, and kids clubs to keep them occupied while the adults relax, a cruise can be the perfect family holiday. River cruises, in particular, have been increasingly popular with younger travellers in recent years. The opportunity to explore secluded i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 87

BUCKET LIST:

WONDERS OF

NATURE

Is one bucket list ever enough to cover our amazing planet? In the first of a series, we pick destinations that showcase the world’s wonders of nature... The Galapagos Islands Thanks to their association with Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands are probably the most famous wildlifewatching destination in the world. This remote, volcanic archipelago is part of the Republic of Ecuador and sits right on the Equator, some 620 miles from the country’s mainland. Inhabiting such a remote location leads to the animals here having almost no fear of humans. They will allow visitors to get very close to them making for excellent photo opportunities. The list of wildlife on show here includes tropical penguins, blue-footed boobies, seafaring iguanas, playful sea-lions and venerable giant tortoises. Strict legislation governs wildlife tourism here, to minimise any detrimental impact on the unique ecosystem. Only tiny pockets of the national park are accessible, you must keep to the clearly marked trails in strictly disciplined small groups, lead by local, certified guides. Nevertheless, a visit to the Galapagos is guaranteed to be unforgettable. Perhaps the best way to see the islands is to take a cruise on one of the 80 or so licensed vessels operating there. You can find out more about travel to the islands at: galapagos.org

Whale watching in Iceland Iceland is arguably the whale-watching centre of Europe, despite the fact that it is one of the few nations still hunting whales commercially. The unique mix of cold and warm sea currents in Icelandic waters leads to an abundance of food which attracts whales to the shallow fjords. The most commonly sighted whale in Iceland is the Minke whale, which can be spotted all around the country throughout the year. Humpback Whales, renowned for their acrobatic behavior, are frequently seen throughout the summer, a much rarer visitor is the largest animal on Earth, the Blue Whale. The summer season, from April to September offers the best chance to see a wide range of species, with animals visiting the north and south sides of the island. Whale-watching tours take a variety of forms from the traditional Icelandic oak boats to modern RIB speedboats. Whatever your preference, the sight of a 30-ton whale breaching the ocean surface is surely one of nature’s greatest spectacles. It’s not just whales and dolphins that Iceland has to offer either, it’s also renowned as one of the best places in the world for birdwatching. For further information, visit: inspiredbyiceland.com

Hatching turtles in Mexico The first moments of a turtles life have become a wildlife documentary staple. It’s a hard heart that’s not melted by the sight of a baby turtle, and their awkward, desperate rush over the sand, dodging predators, makes compelling viewing. With almost every species of turtle classified as endangered, hatching sites are often protected and managed in order to minimise predation and give the species the very best chance to flourish. As a result, there are a number of turtle sanctuaries around the world where travellers can watch the magical spectacle of tiny hatchlings making their way to the waves. One such location which combines wildlife with luxury, is the Hilton Los Cabos on the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. From July to November, guests at the hotel have the chance to watch Olive Ridley turtles hatch on the beach. The staff at the hotel patrol the 10 mile beachfront daily to monitor and protect the nesting sites. The eggs are moved to a corral and once the turtles hatch, they are released in safety, allowing the maximum number possible to reach the sea. For more details, visit: www.hiltonloscabos.com

Giraffe Manor, Kenya Majestic, unusual and elegant, giraffes have fascinated and inspired humankind for centuries. Elephants and rhino are the only modern land animals larger and heavier than giraffes, and a close encounter with one is always a magical experience. Giraffe Manor on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, offers the chance to get up-close and personal with these intriguing creatures. Undoubtedly one of the world’s quirkiest boutique hotels, Giraffe Manor dates back to the 1930s and sits in a 140-acre sanctuary of indigenous forest, home to a wide variety of wildlife. The stars of the show, however, are the Rothschild giraffes, which can be viewed from the terrace as they stroll through the trees. The giraffes here are inquisitive and

at ease with humans, sometimes even putting their heads through the windows at mealtimes to find out what guests are doing! In addition to luxury overnight accommodation, the Manor also opens daily for tours and visits. The giraffes are always keen to be hand-fed, so you’re sure to leave with some wonderful and memories of a unique experience. thesafaricollection.com/properties/ giraffe-manor/ Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, North Island, New Zealand Animals don’t have to be large to be memorable or spectacular. The NewZealand glow-worm is less than an inch long, but the bioluminescent display these creatures create when gathered

in large numbers is truly wondrous. First discovered in gold mines during the 19th century, the New Zealand glow worm is the larva of a gnat. These creatures inhabit many locations throughout New Zealand, but one of the best places to view their spectacular and eerie glow are the Waitomo Caves on the North Island. Long established as a popular tourist attraction, the caves are a must-see for visitors and there are daily boat trips through the subterranean wonderland. Robot ambassador greets passengers at Munich Airport

Eco-Airline of the Year 2018

From mid-February, passengers arriving at Munich Airport will be greeted by Josie Pepper, a 120-centimetre tall robot that has “sparkling, round eyes and a pleasant voice”, according to its creators. Josie will be on duty in terminal 2 to help passengers, offering directions to a gate or a specific shop. Initially, Englishspeaking Josie will meet passengers as they head towards the shuttle connecting the main terminal to the satellite building. Robots are becoming an increasingly common sight at airports. In late 2016, Glasgow became the first UK airport to recruit a robotic ambassador which was named GLAdys. As well as greeting and assisting customers, robots can now be found cleaning airports, serving drinks, and even performing security duties.

Singapore Airlines Unveil Upgraded Cabins

This January, Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced that London and Hong Kong would be the next destinations to be

served by its newest Airbus A380 aircraft, featuring the airline’s recently unveiled new cabin products. Publicly unveiled early in November and debuted on 18 December 2017, the new cabins follow the delivery of the first of five new A380s acquired from Airbus. Initially fitted to the five new A380s, retrofit work will then commence on 14 aircraft already in service. The new cabin products seat up to 471 customers in four classes, with six in Suites, 78 in Business Class, 44 in Premium Economy Class and 343 in Economy Class. The highlight, however, is the new First-Class suites which aim to provide the comfort of a hotel at 35,000ft. Richly upholstered seats that swivel and recline or, if that’s not comfortable enough, make use of the generously proportioned bed. T

he London Taxi and the outstanding service provided by its drivers are synonymous with London. This premium service is available to all and allows Londoners and tourists alike to see all the famous landmarks in safety and comfort. For over 360 years, the iconic London Taxi has offered a secure and safe journey all over the famous city. The fleet of friendly, professional and knowledgeable drivers continue the same values that were established in 1662. The Knowledge, a 150-year-old in-depth test that all drivers must pass before they can become a licensed Taxi driver, means that every time you take a journey, your driver has intimate knowledge of all the London streets and famous landmarks, and knows the most efficient way to get to your destination.

Since the late 1600s, as London survived the great fire and two devastating world wars, the London Taxi has stood alongside the city and become as recognisable as any other icon. From Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill to David Beckham and JK Rowling, the London Taxi has served millions from all walks of life, offering reliable and affordable journeys around London. Although it is steeped in history and tradition, the London Taxi has evolved with the technological revolution that has taken place over the last 10 years. The growth in Smartphone technology has meant that ordering and paying for a Taxi is now easier than it has ever been, with all Taxis now fitted with card payment machines. As well as the traditional raising of an arm, or street hail, you

can now order a Taxi through apps like Taxiapp UK Despite the growth in competitive services in the Taxi market, London Taxis take pride in the fact that there is no safer way to travel around the capital. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, there is no more reliable form of transport in the country. London Taxis offer a private journey on a public scale and ensure that you and your loved ones will arrive safely. A ride in a London Taxi is not just a journey from A to B. It is the continuation of a London tradition dating back further than the building of Buckingham Palace itself. It is an opportunity to experience and see London how it should be seen. Up close, personal and safe. Enjoy the ride, in London’s Pride.

JOIN THE CLUB

The Private Jet Club UK aims to make flying by private jet accessible to a broader audience by facilitating the sharing of flights, and reducing the cost to passengers travelling to and from the UK, Ireland and Europe. For a low annual membership fee and a small facilitation fee for each seat booked, members can enjoy the convenience and luxury of a private aircraft

P

rivately chartered aircraft offer passengers many advantages that commercial carriers cannot. Smaller jets are able to use smaller airfields, meaning it’s more likely to find an option close to home. Some private planes are able to fly faster than commercial airliners; you’ll also save time on the ground as well. As well as added speed and convenience, chartered aircraft offer more privacy which can be very appealing to many passengers. For many years the cost of flying in a private jet has been prohibitive. The cost of purchasing an aircraft runs from

millions to tens of millions of pounds, and chartering a jet privately can cost many thousands of pounds. This is where the Private Jet Club UK can help. The Private Jet Club UK is a facilitator matching members to flights, organising payment and chartering jets on their behalf. It does not own or operate aircraft, nor is it a travel agent. The Private Jet Club UK uses a charter broker to source the best private jet charters and prices for members from some 2,000 private jets available across Europe. The club is then able to match members who want to fly to and from the

same location on the same date, enabling them to share the cost. This can lead to a much cheaper rate per seat than a sole charter. The club will also accept sole charters from members if required and, if members have chartered a private jet outside of the club, they can post spare seats available on their flight that they wish to fill. The club also plans to offer some scheduled flights to share. If you or your business would like to take advantage of the benefits of The Private Jet Club UK membership, visit privatejetclubuk.co.uk to find out more.

OPEN FOR

BUSINESS

With business travellers accounting for a significant number of hotel bookings in the UK, it’s a market the industry can’t afford to ignore. Corporate customers tend to have different priorities to those booking a hotel for leisure. Hotels need to make sure these needs are met to secure the steady stream of repeat bookings that satisfied business people can provide

A

convenient location is the top priority for business travellers, and to appeal to them, a hotel needs to have excellent transport links. Collaborative working spaces, conference facilities, and an Internet connection that’s reliable and fast are all going to be pre-requisites, but to keep them coming back, corporate guests expect a little more. Better amenities, more comfort; they expect their stay to be enjoyable as well as productive. Recent years have seen a growing number of workers look to combine their business trips with leisure activities, giving birth to the “bleisure” trend. When working away from home, why not try to take in some of the local sights and attractions? The digital culture of 24hour connectivity has driven a blurring of the line between work and leisure, so it’s no surprise that “bleisure” is particularly popular with millenials. Many hoteliers in the UK are upping their game to offer practical and comfortable accommodation to meet the needs of every guest. We take a look at a few examples here:

The Titanic Belfast

Built during the late 1880s, the hotel occupies the former headquarters of 10 8 in s pired- travel.c o.u k

world-famous shipbuilder Harland and Wolff. Located at the heart of Titanic Quarter, a waterfront area that has seen significant regeneration over the past decade and is now considered Northern Ireland’s premier leisure destination. Excellent transport links make the Titanic Hotel perfect for business travellers, Belfast City Airport is 10 minutes away by taxi, and the bustling city centre just five minutes by foot. The hotel has recently announced a partnership with neighbouring SSE Arena, allowing for corporate offers and hospitality at the venue. The hotel sits adjacent to the Clarendon Dock and City Quays area of Belfast Harbour, which is fast becoming the new hub of business in Belfast. The building is ‘listed’ due to its special architectural and historical importance. The restoration of the building was undertaken with sensitivity, and the decor of the hotel’s 119 bedrooms has been inspired by its maritime history. Seven heritage rooms of various sizes are available. Drawing Office One can accommodate up to 300 guests, and smaller meetings or events can be hosted in one of the smaller spaces. The hotel boasts a permanent collection of over 500 works of art, artefacts and photographs for guests to view. Special rates tailored for corporate

Property has been a reliable and safe investment option in the UK for decades, and this has lead to investors feeling comfortable enough to look overseas for new opportunities. It’s estimated that more than a million Britons now own property overseas and for many, the benefits are not merely financial

or some investors, it’s all about the money. They may choose to buy properties off-plan speculatively with the hope of making a quick return on their investment. They may invest in an unfavoured region on a hunch that it’s about to see a boom in tourism, pushing property values swiftly upwards. For others, however, the process is as much of a lifestyle choice as a financial one. Having a permanent base in one of your favourite holiday locations can provide years of enjoyment for the whole

family. Being on holiday, but still having the sense of being “home”, having some creature comforts around you, and putting down some roots in foreign lands. As with any property, your holiday home can provide a return on your investment in two ways, by increasing in value or through generating a rental income. Some investors may choose to keep their property strictly for family and friends to enjoy, but renting out your holiday home can be lucrative. Property ownership always involves ongoing

costs. Local taxes, utility bills, tending the garden, cleaning the pool, and general upkeep of the property itself all add up. Renting the property out while you’re not using it can cover all of these expenses and usually leave a little profit on top. Choosing the right property is vital and research is key to this, although it does offer you an excuse to do some travelling to make sure you’re looking in the right place. For British buyers, the perennial favourites are France, Spain and Portugal. Each offers easy access, an in spired-travel.co.uk 121

Recently however, the market has been disrupted by Brexit and changes to UK stamp duty, causing growth to slow with some areas even seeing prices drop. This downturn in the London market may represent a good time to buy, a city as important and prosperous as London will inevitably bounce back. Longer term, an investment in London is almost certain to reap a healthy return for those with funds available. It may not seem like an obvious place for a “holiday home” but London is popular with visitors for good reason. Offering world-class restaurants, entertainment and culture, what better place to have your own pied-à-terre? Particularly if your nest egg hatches into a golden goose a few years down the line.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Over time, the form, function and purpose of timepieces have all evolved. Their story is shaped not only by technological advancement but also by changes in fashion and social attitudes. We delve into the history of watches and take a look at the journey, from the traditional pocket watch to your modernday wristwatch

T

he history of personal timepieces is a long and interesting one. Their story begins in the early 15th century with the invention of the mainspring. This breakthrough allowed the miniaturisation of clocks to the point where they could be worn on pendants around the neck or fastened to clothing. Early examples were wildly inaccurate and were prized more for their novelty and decorative value than their functionality. Over time, (excuse the pun!) clockmakers advanced their craft and improved the accuracy of their creations. By the 17th century, pocket watches had become both fashionable and practical. Devices of this period were still susceptible to exposure to the elements, so keeping them safely in a pocket was ideal. By the mid 19th century, wristwatches were becoming common, but initially, their manufacturers marketed them as bracelets for women. A gentleman would be expected to use a pocket watch. This perception changed as the timepiece became a vital item of military equipment. The need to synchronise manoeuvres without the use of signalling lead to the issuing of watches to officers, but looking at a pocket watch in the heat of battle, or on horseback, soon proved impractical. Soldiers began to strap their pocket watches to their wrists using cupped leather straps, so their hands remained free. By the time the Second Boer War was underway, companies such as Mappin and Webb were offering “campaign watches”, specifically for

military personnel. The start of the 20th century also saw the first aeronautical watches. As well as keeping a precise track of time, they would also be able to calculate fuel consumption, air speed and lift. The use of wristwatches became crucial to the success of tactics used during the First World War, and soldiers continued to wear their timepieces upon returning from service. The association of wristwatches with the military and aviation soon dismissed the perception of wristwatches as a feminine accessory. The post-war period saw a boom in wristwatch sales to the point where, by the 1930s, they were outselling pocket watches by 50-1. Higher demand drove continuous innovation, from 1923’s introduction of the first self-winding mechanism, electric watches in the 1950s, quartz watches in the 1970s to the multifunctional, digital watches of the 1980s. Each wave of innovation drove further sales as consumers rushed out to buy the latest technology. Today, the ubiquitous Smartphone with its built-in clock performs the function of telling us the time, leaving the wristwatch to find a different role for itself. The modern personal timepiece finds itself performing a similar function to it’s very earliest ancestors. It makes a statement of style and prestige rather than merely serving to mark the hours and minutes. One company specialising in elegant dress watches for men is Söner by Sweden. Söner was founded by Freddie Palmgren on the Swedish west coast,

watch. Like many people, during trips abroad, Freddie would often be drawn to wristwatch stores, looking for a timepiece that was just right for him. Time and time again he found that he was never truly content with what was on offer; there was always a compromise, whether that was size, colour or price. From these experiences, the idea of Söner was born. If he couldn’t find the watch he wanted, why not design and make it himself? He started to sketch on an elegant, minimalist, rectangular watch for men, with the ultimate goal of producing a robust, high-precision watch with an exclusive design. Materials and technical solutions were chosen to secure a long and trouble-free use. A watch that could be passed on to coming generations, a concept which lead to the first model’s name: Legacy. Söner focuses solely on men’s watches as Freddie feels these are the customers he best understands. All Söner watches are rectangular because the brand seeks to challenge the 100-year dominance of round and oval-faced watches. Freddie believes that a wristwatch reflects your taste ‘For me, the message that a watch sends out has become more important, and today I have a different opinion about my watch’s appearance than I did 10 or 20 years ago.’ he says ‘I’ve matured as a man, and it affects what type of watch I want to wear.’ Emphasising the way in which watches have become a fashion and personality statement, Freddie says: ‘The idea is to wear your watch as much as possible. Therefore, the most important thing when choosing your watch is to really feel that enjoyment. Make sure you invest time in really thinking about what you want, and for what occasion. It’s also important to think about what you want the watch to say about you as a person.’

2018 GLOBAL FASHION TRENDS

L

ong Tall Sally has worked with trend consultants to reveal which is THE fashion piece, print or accessory that is currently the most popular across 20 of the most stylish cities around the world, from London and Paris to lesser-known fashion hubs like Seoul, Melbourne and Dubai. To pinpoint what real women across the globe are actually wearing, trend consultants monitored ‘outfit of the day’ posts on Instagram, Pinterest and streetstyle blogs from a mixture of cities across 20 countries. Alongside well-known fashion destinations like Paris, London, Milan and New York, the research delves into the style of the fashion capitals of the next generation, such as Lagos, Seoul, Berlin and Bogotá. The result is a unique snapshot of the fashion and style of real women, from 20 cities, across six continents. Surprisingly, in Paris it’s the humble white tee that is currently trending on the

streets of the fashion capital of the world. In contrast, Francophiles are taking over the streets of Tokyo, with colourful berets a firm favourite amongst fashionistas in Japan’s capital. The research shows that millennial pink is here to stay, with Melbourne embracing it with cropped trousers, Berlin loving the shade for their 70s panelled suits and Shanghai pairing oversized sleeves with the on-trend light pink hue. Long Tall Sally commissioned watercolour illustrations, by artist Rebecca Side, to bring the research to life. Each illustration has been hand drawn to sum up the key look of each city. The research was conducted by Long Tall Sally to coincide with the launch of their campaign #CURATDBY which focuses on supporting emerging global fashion talent. longtallsally.com/curatd/by

he Business of Fashion (BoF) is pleased to announce the third edition of The Global Fashion School Rankings, including 25 new participating schools and a newly established ranking of business graduate courses within fashion institutions. The Global Fashion School Rankings offers the world’s most comprehensive analysis of fashion education, based on a survey of more than 11,000 students and alumni, with data gathered from 73 schools in 20 countries. “BoF’s Global Fashion School Rankings have become an important tool for schools, students and the industry to evaluate and understand the fashion education landscape,” explains Imran Amed, Founder and CEO of BoF. “We have adapted and extended our methodology this year, putting an extra emphasis on landing a job, as this has

been an ongoing concern for the tens of thousands of students graduating from fashion schools each year. And, with more students interested in pursuing business-focused careers in fashion, we have introduced a new business-focused ranking to help them navigate their decision-making about which schools to attend and how to get the most out of their experience.” While Central Saint Martins in London maintains the No1 position for both the Undergraduate and Graduate Fashion programmes, a new focus on employability in the methodology sees major shifts further down the ranking, identifying the fashion schools from North America, Europe and Asia that are successfully training graduates who are deemed to be capable of securing positions in the fashion industry. audi’s masterpiece is a highlight of any visit to Barcelona, despite being just 70% complete 136 years after construction began. Current estimates suggest that it will be finished in 2026, 100 years after the death of its architect. If you’re unfamiliar with the works of Antoni Gaudi, the Sagrada Familia will be unlike any building you’ve ever seen before. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea however, George Orwell is said to have referred to it as “one of the most hideous buildings in the world”. Intricate and ornate to the point of looking more organic than architectural, it is anything but bland. The Nativity façade is perhaps the most awe inspiring part of the building. The sheer volume of sculptural work on show, personally overseen by Gaudi, has to be seen to be believed. The interior is no less impressive, the Basilica (pictured) is particularly awe-inspiring, with double twisted columns, an ornate ceiling and kaleidoscopic, stained glass windows. Gaudi was once asked why he lavished so much detail upon the tops of the spires, over 150m above the ground, when no one would see them. “The angels will see them” was Gaudi’s pious response. If the Sagrada whets your appetite for Gaudi’s work, Barcelona also boasts the magical Parc Guell and La Pedrera. w w w . i n spi r edtr av el m a g . co . uk 3 1

As the moon’s mystical powers have influenced people for centuries, Marigot Bay Resort & Marina have been inspired to create a variety of treatments to help restore and revitalize the body. The spa’s recently launched treatments are based around the cycles of the moon and have been designed with the Organic Pharmacy to reflect the varying energies of the lunar cycle. With these four lunar treatments, guests will be able to connect their mind and body to the varying energies of the lunar cycles. A time for renewal and introspection, the New Moon spa treatment allows guests to meditate on who they are and who they would like to become. The treatment begins at the very foundation of the body with a foot massage, by anointing them with oils of juniper, rosemary and fennel to awaken one’s spirits. The body and mind are then thoroughly revitalised with a seaweed and eucalyptus salt scrub followed by a deeply stimulating seaweed wrap. To finish the treatment, guests are treated to an invigorating full body rosemary and eucalyptus massage, leaving guests

feeling energised and awakened. The Waxing Moon spa treatment provides guests with a time to refocus on one’s energy, goals and maximum potential. The treatment begins with the feet, which are massaged with the soothing jasmine oil, using reflexology techniques to release any stress and tension. This is then followed by a restoring scalp massage, as well as a head and foot wrap using essential oils. Meanwhile, the therapist will stimulate and rejuvenate the skin’s texture with a luxurious petal salt scrub. To complete the treatment, a nurturing jasmine mask and enveloping full-body massage leaves the body feeling grounded and full of creative energy. A time for one to realise their full potential and choose to live life to its fullest, the Full Moon spa treatment is focused around the revered scent of a rose. As nothing encompasses balance more than a rose, its scent has been carefully selected to help stabilise the body. The treatment begins with an anointment and massage of the feet with rose oil, while the body is exfoliated with rose petals and rose-oil-infused salts. Then, a deep, cleansing rose wrap nourishes the body with essential

minerals, while the face receives a deep, relaxing massage and lymphatic facial. As a result of the treatment, guests will leave feeling harmonised and rebalanced. With an initial foot massage featuring detoxifying oils and pressure-point techniques, the body is set to feel restored with the Waning Moon spa treatment. The body’s systems are then cleansed of any pollutants with an exfoliation and lymphatic massage. To end the treatment, guests will enjoy a refreshing facial to ensure complete purification and will be left feeling fully revived and renewed. Marigot Bay is also renowned globally for maritime activities, from yachting and sailing to water sports. The newly renovated Marina has 42 berths and 20 mooring buoys, with berthing for yachts up to 280ft in length and up to 20ft drafts. This marina accommodates some of the biggest superyachts in the world, offering them safe harbour as well as a newly expanded Rum Cave dining patio and brand new over-water gazebo pavilion. THE RISE OF

MEDICAL

TOURISM

Each year, millions of people pack their bags, book flights, and head overseas, not with the intention of sightseeing, experiencing a new culture, or relaxation, but to undergo medical procedures. The concept of medical tourism is not a new one, the ancient Greeks journeyed far and wide to reach healing temples, and spas have drawn visitors for centuries. But what does medical tourism look like today?

H

istorically, people travelled to find better or more advanced treatments than they could get at home. Nowadays, different factors are at play. The cost is often a key factor, particularly for US citizens, while those from the UK are more likely to venture abroad to avoid waiting lists. It’s certainly not a choice to be taken lightly; there are risks involved in all medical procedures, domestic or foreign, and a little preparation can

minimise these. Research is imperativealways check the qualifications and reputation of any medical provider you consider. Ensure the medical centre is affiliated with and accredited by a recognised organisation. Patient reviews are another good barometer of the quality of healthcare on offer. It’s clear, however, that an increasing number of people have decided that the benefits outweigh the risks. In 2016, 14 million people crossed

international borders for treatment, and the industry was estimated to be worth almost ÂŁ45bn. Analysis suggests that this figure will grow by as much as 25% a year over the next decade. With such vast sums involved, investment in facilities and personnel has accelerated, and competition for a bigger slice of the market is fierce. So which destinations are profiting from this growing trend and what do they have to offer? i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 143

Istanbul, Turkey

Named “Health and Medical Tourism Destination of the year” for 2017 by the International Medical Travel Journal, Malaysia offers health tourists excellent value for money. Luxury and patient comfort are paramount, and the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council has a presence at both Kuala Lumpur and Penang airports to ensure patients are attended to from the moment they arrive. For those wishing to extend their stay for some recuperation, Malaysia boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, with white sands and crystal-clear waters. Turkey offers visitors low-cost options for a range of specialities including transplantation, genetic testing and nanosurgery. Among the most noticeable medical tourists here are the recipients of hair transplants, who are identified by the headbands they require for a few days after the procedure. Around 80,000 are said to have received hair transplants in Turkey during 2017, so the headbands are not an uncommon sight in Istanbul’s Taksim square. Thailand, famed as the “Land of

MEDICAL TOURISM Smiles”, also boasts the highest number of internationally accredited hospitals in southeast Asia. Health travellers are drawn here in their droves for services such as dental work, dermatology and cosmetic surgery. The Bumrungrad International hospital alone treats over half a million overseas patients from more than 190 different nations each year. In addition to excellent healthcare, Thailand also offers world-renowned relaxation therapies, stunning natural beauty and vibrant cities. South Korea is one of the world’s most technologically advanced nations, and here, patients can expect state-ofthe-art hospitals awash with cuttingedge medical equipment. Seoul’s Wooridul Hospital specialises in minimally invasive spinal surgeries and carries out over 20,000 each year.

MEDICAL TOURISM

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Savings of up to 85 per cent on the cost of western medical treatments can be found in India. Private hospitals often offer full packages for foreigners, including airport transfers and the chance to recover in luxury. A therapeutic visit here can be combined with a bucket-list visit to the Taj Mahal or another of India’s iconic landmarks. Mexico has welcomed medical tourists from the US for a number of years, and now visitors from across the world are discovering its ever-improving healthcare sector. Prices in Mexico can be up to 60% lower than in the

US and Europe, making it an attractive destination, particularly for dentistry and cosmetic surgery. Attractions that range from ancient wonders, to tranquil beaches, to vibrant cities, add to its appeal as a destination. Modern medical tourism extends beyond treatment of ailments and afflictions, and cosmetic procedures now account for a significant portion of medical tourism. Brazil’s growing cosmetic surgery market has seen it become almost as famous for the body beautiful as it is for the beautiful game. Brazil accounted for nearly 11 per cent

of all cosmetic surgery worldwide in 2016 with only the US (17 per cent) performing more procedures. Many travellers are drawn by the promise of cheaper plastic surgery, but more affluent tourists come for the services of celebrity surgeons. Much-coveted procedures like the Brazilian butt-lift, made famous by the Kardashians, are widely available in boutique clinics. After all, once you have the body you’ve always dreamed of, what better place to flaunt it than the fabulous Copacabana beach?

WHERE’S MOLLIE?:

TIPS FROM A

PROFESSIONAL THRILL–SEEKER Mollie has dedicated the last three years to travelling some of the globe’s most weird and wonderful destinations and sharing her experiences with the world through her blog, Where’s Mollie? Here, she shares some of her top travel and lifestyle tips Smart packing Having lived out of my suitcase containing the bare minimum for the last three years while pursuing a career in travel blogging, I guess you could say that I now have a trick or two up my sleeve when it comes to packing and prioritising the contents of my suitcase. My ability to pack light is mainly down to the fact my technology takes up my hand luggage and over half of my hold luggage. Seriously. Heels and hair dryers don’t usually make the cut. Efficient packing is essential for me and I definitely have a few tricks to share that minimise my hold weight without compromising my comforts. When you’re on the go and moving from destination A to B to C, of course one will want to maximise their wardrobe options and pack in as much as possible but it’s also important to bear in mind the weight. Keeping that low will not only avoid overweight baggage fees at checkin but also if you decide to get a lastminute domestic flight (where luggage is more restricted), you’ll avoid having to chuck half your suitcase out / upgrading to the next tier. It goes without saying that it also makes your life easier not lugging 14 8 i ns pired- travel.co.u k

your entire life around with you. One of the ways I religiously keep my suitcase organised on the go is with packing cubes. I ignored them and their assistance for so long, but I now couldn’t be without them. I totally underestimated their brilliance. Packing cubes usually come in packs of 6-8, all different sizes, and you’ll find yourself playing an easy, satisfying game of Tetris with your suitcase as you work out how you want them to lay. I usually divide my clothes with them into tops, bottoms, bikinis, gym wear, socks and undies. Not only do packing cubes save you the trouble of having to unpack and repack your entire life when searching for any individual item (we have all been there) but they also prompt you to remember all categories of clothing too. For example, if I have one packing cube empty when I thought I’d finished packing, I will realise exactly what I’m missing. Usually socks and pyjamas! Dealing with luggage allowances and restrictions If you’re like me and you travel right on the edge of the baggage weight

TRAVEL ADVICE allowance, a little gadget you may want to pick up for your next adventure is a handheld baggage scale. That way you can bound up to the check-in desk with confidence, knowing that you already completed the reshuffle at home, instead of crossing your fingers and counting on your charm! Mine measures the length of my wrist to fingertip (super small) and you can get them for around £15. Okay phew, you’re through. Next up; Security When it comes to passing through security all liquids must be in containers measuring 100ml or less and must fit into one of the airport-sized, transparent plastic bags. Usually, this means I cannot take my go-to skin care and facial products on board with me as they all sit at around 125ml. Well, not the full-sized bottles anyway. Keeping my skin fresh and hydrated though, particularly on longhaul flights and throughout layovers, is something at the core of my travel sanity and so without fail, I always decant my favourite products into travel-sized pots that will make it through security. You can get these from any high street drug store and then pop the full-size bottles in your hold luggage for the rest of the trip. The Essentials My favourite skin care products include: • Obagi Hydrate Moisturiser • Decleor face oil • Sun Sense lip balm SPF 30 Also essential for me in flight is a silk eye mask and earplugs. Blocking out any form of light is key for me overcoming time zones and encouraging sleep no matter the time on the clock. Planes are usually a hive of activity and I am so easily distracted from the task in hand (be it work or sleep), so blocking sound and vision ensures I capture as many ZZZs as possible to slide into the incoming time zone. Carrying an empty water bottle through security is another must for me and something a lot of people don’t realise you can do. Sure that water bottle cannot i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 149

be filled up when passing through, but once through to the other side you can fill it up. From my experience, there’s pretty much always drinking water fountains on the other side, usually in the corridors that lead to the restrooms. Treat yourself to a durable, reusable bottle for your travels. It will save you a serious amount of pennies at airports and reduce your plastic consumption at the same time. A sustainable travel investment. Should you feel fancy, I highly recommend getting a vacuum insulated bottle which, on average, keeps cold water cold for 24 hours and hot water hot for 12. Perfect on those long-haul flights to keep your water fresh or your tea toasty! It’s not uncommon at all for me to be travelling between hugely contrasting climates and of course travelling in such a way can leave your skin, hair, nails

and body in need of some serious TLC. Whilst it’s impossible to carry around all the products that I desire to combat the often harsh conditions I’m exposed to, but there are a few essentials I’m never without. 1. Coconut oil - I always bring a little pot of this for an added dose of hydration to my hair or skin. A thin layer across your skin (face/body) is a great source of moisture. The great thing about coconut oil is a little goes a long way. If your hair feels dry, drench your hair in an overnight mask and let the coconut oil do its thang. Coconut oil is honestly just the god of multifunctionality. Picture this...you’re out on the road, parked up by the ocean and ready to cook up some eggs to go with your coffee. You go to start cooking and realise you forgot to pick up the oil. But

there’s no stress: get the coconut oil out! 2. Obagi Sun Shield face SPF 50 - If there’s one thing I will prioritise spending the extra pennies on, it’s skin protection. I am forever exposed to different strengths of UV rays and one thing you cannot reverse is sun damage. I’m very conscious of not weathering my skin and never drop below SPF 50 on my face. Obagi products are all hypoallergenic and non-irritating-perfect for sensitive skin like mine. You can get this specific product with a tint if desired so it can double up as a tinted moisturiser. Just a little insight into the travels hacks I’ve picked up during life on the road... Happy adventuring! MOTORING

TEST DRIVE Inspired Travel Magazine’s motoring expert gets behind the wheel of the latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship vehicle

T

here are many high powered luxury vehicles on the market today, but how many of them have the presence, pedigree and practicality of a Range Rover? This marque has a unique appeal that draws buyers from a range of backgrounds: a Range Rover will look just as comfortable outside a country manor as it will on the drive of a footballer’s mansion. Both beautiful and beautifully equipped, the Vogue Autobiography model offers levels of sophistication and luxury guaranteed to impress even the most discerning motorist. Approaching the car, it’s hard not to be impressed. The lines are modern, but it’s unmistakably the same vehicle that’s been setting the benchmark for practical, luxury motoring for decades. There’s a sense of urgency about the profile of the latest Range Rover; it gives the impression of making swift progress even when parked. From the moment you unlock the car and slip inside, there’s a sense of pure indulgence, the scent of the finest grade leather, the sheen of the beautiful wooden veneer, and a palpable impression of quality from everything

you touch. The cabin is an oasis of calm, with multi-hued ambient lighting, independent four-zone climate control and sumptuous seating. In addition to fully-motorised adjustment with memory function, the seats can heat, cool or massage you. Although they are already so comfortable, you almost wonder if these features are necessary. Visibility is excellent; you gaze at the world through an expanse of glass, including an electric, panoramic roof which can be fully opened. The surround-sound system boasts 19 speakers, including a sub-woofer delivering superb audio throughout the

interior. If all of these luxuries aren’t quite enough, you can, of course, peruse the list of optional extras. With the Range Rover, opulence does come at the expense of practicality. The boot offers 900 litres of capacity, though it can be increased to almost 2,000 litres with the rear seats folded. Ample room for golf clubs, weekend luggage or indeed a large family pet. The Range Rover’s off-road credentials are not to sniffed at either. Elegant it may be, but it’s certainly not afraid to get its boots muddy if the need should arise. Driving the Range Rover is a joy, the model on test was powered by an eager, 3-litre V6 with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. A configuration capable of propelling this 2-ton car from 0 to 60 in under 7.5 seconds. There’s plenty of power should you be in a hurry, but I rarely was. At the wheel of such a comfortable and capable vehicle, I found myself looking for ways to make my journeys longer, not shorter.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE, BAVARIA

L

ooking like a CGI creation from a fantasy blockbuster, Neuschwanstien castle has overlooked the village of Hohenschwangau since 1869. The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and an homage to the composer Richard Wagner. Ludwig funded construction of the castle himself rather than from public funds, such was his passion for the project. The embodiment of the 19th-century fashion for “Bergenromantik” (Castle Romanticism) Neuschwanstein has gone on to feature in several movies and is said to have been the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. It was opened to the public shortly after the king’s death in 1886, and since then it has welcomed more than 60 million visitors. Well over a million tourists a year visit the castle, making it one of Europe’s most popular tourist attractions.

TIMEZONE TIREDNESS Any frequent traveller knows that one of the most challenging aspects of travelling the globe is fatigue. Inspired Travel Magazine examines how you can tackle jet lag and re-set your body clock as quickly as possible

T

raveling can be draining; especially when undertaking longer journeys. However, the good news is that there are ways to minimise the strain on your mind and body. Beating jet lag is much easier when you understand precisely what is happening to your body during this time – appreciating what it is your body is lacking will allow you to replenish it. Jet lag, or desynchronosis, occurs when a person travels across time zones or when their sleep is disrupted, for example, by irregular patterns that come with shift work. 158 i ns pired- travel.co .u k

It’s a physiological condition that arises from disruption to the body clock – a lack of synchronisation between two different groups of neurons in the brain. One of these neurons is related to deep sleep and the effects of physical fatigue, while the other controls the dream state of rapid eye movement (REM). These neurons find it difficult to cope with a new cycle, the two groups get out of sync. The body clock is very sensitive to external factors such as sunlight. So traveling across time zones and going through night and day cycles that your body is unaccustomed to causes the body clock to become out-of-sync, this causes jet lag. Ever heard the expression, “west is best, east is a beast”? Well in the case of travelling, it’s true. A seasoned traveller will confirm that a westward trip is much easier to recover from than travelling the same distance east. It’s thought that this is because travelling west adds hours to your day, giving your body more time to adjust. If you were to depart from London to L.A. at midday, for example, you might

arrive at 4pm local time, but your body will be telling you it’s late evening and suggesting it’s time for bed. If you do get your head down for 8 hours, you’ll then wake up long before dawn and the whole topsy-turvey cycle continues. So what are the best methods for tackling jet lag? Try and avoid arriving at your destination at night. One of the simplest ways to mitigate jet lag is to avoid arriving at your destination at night. Arriving during the day will lessen the confusion for your internal clock, thus making it easier to stay awake. You’ll also be much more tempted to get out and explore with a full day ahead of you. Search for sunlight. It’s a scientific fact that sunlight releases serotonin within the human body – a chemical that causes a happy, contented state of mind. Spending as much time as possible in daylight will, therefore, reduce your irritability after a long flight.

TRAVEL ADVICE

A seasoned traveller will confirm that a westward trip is much easier to recover from than travelling the same distance east.

Relax your daily routine. During the days, or even weeks, leading up to your departure, try and avoid sticking to a firm schedule. Having a strict timetable will make it much harder for you to adjust to new time zones.

Split up longer journeys. For longer journeys, incorporating a stop-over into your travels can often be a smart thing to do. Not only does this avoid the tedium of being on a plane for a long time, but also allows your body more time to adapt to new time zones. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. While many travellers like to enjoy the airport’s bars while waiting to board their flight, alcohol will increase levels of tiredness and dehydration. Meanwhile, caffeine has the opposite effect and will instead make it difficult for you to catch up on sleep and recover from flight fatigue. Catch up on sleep. Of course, the most important point here would be to make sure you catch up on your sleep. While exploring your holiday destination at night time is just as appealing as exploring during the day, sleep is incredibly important. However, going overboard can be just as confusing – sleep as much as you would in a normal 24-hour period. i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 159

A SOCIAL

INDUSTRY Since the turn of the century, the use of social media has rocketed. Around a quarter of the world’s population use Facebook, with many other platforms acquiring hundreds of millions of users. The platforms’ popularity, mean businesses are keen to get involved, and here, Inspired Travel Magazine takes a look at how the travel industry has been affected

T

he days of sending postcards from your holiday resort only for them to arrive three days after you get back home are long gone. Nowadays, people share photos and videos from the minute their holiday begins, letting friends and family know exactly what they’re up to. Also consigned to the history books are the days when holidaymakers would arrive at a resort having only seen a handful of professionally shot, brochure photographs of where they would be staying. Today, we can browse hundreds, if not thousands of honest reviews, dozens of “real world” photographs, even take a virtual, Google-earth tour along the local streets. All without leaving our sofa. Indeed, a quick glance at Instagram reveals that the hashtag #Travel has been used over 260 million times. People love to share their travel experiences. Today’s social-media savvy traveller has a tremendous amount of information available to them before they book their holiday. Equally important is the role social media plays when people are seeking inspiration for their next trip. When you’ve seen photos of your friends relaxing by the pool, on top of a mountain they’ve just hiked up, you’re more likely

SOCIAL MEDIA

to want to plan something equally worthy of sharing yourself. And an ‘Instaworthy’ beach can of course convert to travel sales in just a few clicks. With all of this in mind, the travel industry has had to up its game. A website featuring glossy photos and glib descriptions will fool no-one if there are dozens of disappointed customers sharing negative reviews online. Customers no longer have to wait till their holiday is over to complain if they feel they’ve been let down. They can instantly take to Facebook or Twitter to vent their frustration and share their disappointment with the world. Tech-

savvy businesses will use social media as a way of engaging with customers and resolving customer care issues quickly, efficiently, and publicly. As well as resolving the negatives, social media is also there to accentuate the positives for travel providers. Through encouraging the use of hashtags and sometimes offering incentives, businesses can use images and videos taken by their customers as promotional tools. This has become known as “user-generatedcontent”, and some firms are able to use this to great effect. Another industry tactic is the use of “influencer marketing”. Influencers are

bloggers or photographers with a global following on social media. Their opinions can affect the decisions of thousands of people, and they are often courted by compainies looking for a PR boost. A positive reveiw from the right person, or even a viral photograph can boost visitor numbers to the area in question.
