T

he UK has basked in record-breaking temperatures this summer, so if you’re keen to keep chasing the sun, this issue is packed with ideas to inspire. We visit Kerala (p19), India’s serene southern state to explore its laid-back charms, and if you’re after a break closer to home, why not consider Tenerife and Marrackech (p38)? The mercury regularly nudges 23°C in both destinations over the winter months – and bonus! – both are just a short-haul flight away. For those who positively embrace the chill factor, ski expert Rob Freeman shares his knowledge about the best resorts around the world for every ability (p68). Then we’re in hot pursuit of the Aurora Borealis (that’s the Northern Lights to me and you), in our Earth’s Greatest Light Show feature on p64. And if you’re relocating for work, insurance company Tapoly.com offers some essential advice on p94, plus in partnership with luxury property experts Cluttons, we’ve found some of the most desirable homes if you’re considering a long-term move. We’ve also got an added dash of celebrity, as much-loved TV presenter Graham Norton drops by for a chat (p46). He spills the secrets on his A-list guests and talks about his side hustle as a bestselling fiction writer. His second novel, A Keeper, another mystery thriller, hits shelves in November and you can read our review on p58. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy reading this issue. Safe travels! BRITISH AIRWAYS JOINS FORCES WITH FIJI AIRWAYS

U

K travellers looking to fly to Fiji will find it a much easier journey, thanks to a new partnership between British Airways and Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline. Set in the South Pacific, Fiji’s 333 tropical islands, with their paradise beaches, worldfamous dive sites and lush flora have long lured holidaymakers. With new direct routes between Singapore, Los Angeles and San Francisco to the Fijian gateway of Nadi, UK travellers will have more options than ever before to jet to the heavenly archipelago. The collaboration marks Fiji Airways’ signing up to Oneword Connect, a new platform for airlines to link up to the global airline alliance – British Airways is a founding member. It also comes hot on the heels of the news that British Airways has started to roll out a £4.5billion, five-year customer investment plan. The focus will be on excellence in the premium cabins, alongside quality 8 i nspired- travel.co.uk

and more choice for all BA customers. Customers will now enjoy a ‘one-stop-shop’ booking experience and be able to earn or use Avios loyalty points with both carriers. Rishi Kapoor, Head of Alliances at British Airways, believes that the move will only boost tourism to the area, saying, ‘This codeshare will make Fiji even more popular with European travellers by offering them a more attractive route network and a comfortable and seamless travel experience. Fijians are known around the globe for giving visitors the warmest of welcomes, so we look forward to giving them an equally warm onboard our flights very soon.’ Fiji Airways operates international and domestic services to 12 countries and 31 cities, including Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, the US, Hong Kong and Singapore. British Airways Holidays offers seven nights at the 5* Sheraton Fiji Resort, from £1659 per person. Includes World Traveller return flights from Heathrow and accommodation with breakfast. t seems as if the world just keeps getting faster and faster, and now you can travel around it even quicker. A whirlwind globetrotting trip has been made possible through Star Alliance, with selected carriers offering the opportunity to fly around the world, stopping at only two destinations for at least 24 hours. Up until now, a minimum of three stopovers was required for all Round-The-World (RTW) tickets. ‘By enabling round the world travel with only two stopovers, we are increasing the attractiveness of the Star Alliance Round The World fare product,’ says Janice Antonson, Vice President of Commercial and Communications at Star Alliance. The global airline alliance has 28 member airlines, operates more than 18,400 daily flights and connects 1,300 destinations in 191 countries. Visit staralliance.com/ book-fly

KLM: SERVING A MIGHTY FINE CUP OF COFFEE IN THE CLOUDS

T

wo famous companies are taking ‘going Dutch’ to a whole new level. From 1 October, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will be serving sustainable coffee from Douwe Egberts (also a Dutch brand) on all of their flights, both to European and to inter-continental destinations. Our taste buds work differently at high altitude, so after careful research, KLM have chosen a special coffee blend to make sure a passenger’s caffiene fix tastes as good up in the clouds as it does on the ground.

AIR CANADA’S NEWLY DESIGNED UNIFORMS WIN IN THE STYLE STAKES

Air Canada

longside comfortable seats, great in-flight entertainment and goodquality food, passengers have come to expect stylish cabin crew as part of their flying experience. And Air Canada’s collaboration with designer Christopher Bates and Unisync, revealed earlier this year, has not only been a hit in the air but on the ground, too. The smart charcoal-grey uniform with pops of ‘Canadian’ red provided by bags, belts, ties and gloves, bagged the award for ‘Best Corporate Design’ from the UK’s Professional Clothing Awards. Both the uniforms and the livery of Air Canada’s fleet have had a revamp as part of the airline’s 80th anniversary year. Bates was selected as the designer for the airline’s new uniforms – made after rigorous trials with cabin and on-ground staff, following a competition among many of Canada’s leading designers. ‘I take classic style and modernise it by focusing on the fabric, colour, and texture, but also more specific features like kissing

buttons on jacket sleeves, unique stitching and seaming,’ he commented. ‘As brand ambassadors who travel around the world, it is important that Air Canada employees feel stylish, confident and comfortable in their uniforms as they take care of millions of customers every year.’ The award marks the third accolade for the uniforms – after winning two ‘Image of the Year Awards’ in March from the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors. ‘This is a very welcome accolade for Air Canada’s new uniform collection, now proudly being worn by our employees. We are delighted their design, which projects Air Canada’s and Canadian values, is clearly making a fashion statement around the world,’ commented Andrew Yiu, Vice President of Product at Air Canada. ‘Winning a European award is gratifying as it further advances our ambition to be a Top 10 global carrier in everything we do.’

S

ingapore Airlines has been named ‘Best Airline in the World’ in the 2018 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. The Airline has also been recognised in seven other categories of the awards by the international travel planning and booking site. These include both Best International First Class and Economy Class in the World category. Reviews from global travellers that focus on outstanding service, quality and value, are used to detemine the winners, alongside TripAdvisor’s algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of airline reviews and ratings over a 12-month period. Accepting the award, Singapore Airlines’ CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong, said: ‘We are honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Best Airline in the World title in the prestigious TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for Airlines 2018. ‘The award is a validation of the hard work and dedication of our thousands of staff all around the world, who focus their attention every day on ensuring that Singapore Airlines remains competitive on a global level.’ i n spi r ed- tr avel. co . uk 9

AMERICAN AIRLINES SAY ‘NO!’ TO THE STRAW

C’EST TRES CHIC!

A BRAND NEW BUSINESS LOUNGE FOR AIR FRANCE

Air France

A

ir France have pulled out all the style stops with their recently reopened business class lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. Located in Hall L of Terminal 2E, French designer du jour, Mathieu Lehanneur has created Le Balcon, a theatrical new space where passengers can dine and sip on ‘destination’ cocktails – spotlighting Air France’s network – between flights. These include the champagne and lychee liquorbased ‘Shanghai’. Features include the marble bar, surrounded by opera box-like circular wooden booths, upholstered in plush teal velvet. Lehanneur’s clever use of burnished golden mirrors on the ceiling adds a stylish Art Deco vibe while creating a welcome shot of indoor sunshine. An embedded LED screen in the parquet floor shows the sky in real-time, creating an illusion of being suspended between the heavens and earth. Open to passengers flying Air France, KLM or SkyTeam international business class, other facilities in the ultra-chic 3200m2 lounge include Le Club, a dedicated area for private meetings, two Clarins spa treatment rooms, private saunas, and a kids zone. With space for 540 guests, the biggest problem of course is that they may never want to leave…

merican Airlines are the latest global giant to replace plastic straws in a move that will see them eliminating the use of over 71,000 pounds of harmful plastic annually. The world’s largest airline has a long history of making sustainable choices – both on the ground and in the air – and drinks in their lounges have been served with a biodegradable eco-friendly straw and wood stir sticks (made from sustainable and environmentally friendly bamboo) since July 2018. The winds of change will continue to blow in November, when the company, a founding member of Oneworld, the third-largest airline alliance in the world, replaces plastic straws/stirrers with the eco-friendly options on all onboard services across the 6700 flights made daily by the company.

SKYTEAM MAKES AIRPORT EXPERIENCE AN ‘APP’Y ONE

A

irport stress has been consigned to history, thanks to a clever new app from SkyTeam. The global airline alliance has created an app, available for iOS and Android, which features maps for all of the alliance’s 39 main hubs, including Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London Heathrow, Sydney and Vancouver. From check-in and departures right through to baggage collection, the interactive maps give passengers a clear and detailed view of their surroundings via their phones. It’s hoped the app, which marks the continued investment in technology to enhance the airport experience by the alliance, will improve customers’ time management and significantly reduce stress, making the whole thing a complete breeze. i n spi r ed- tr avel. co . uk 11

BRITISH AIRWAYS SEEKS PILOTS

ANOTHER STELLAR SAFETY FILM

alling all pilots! The expansion of British Airways’ London City schedule, plus increased regional flying from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Stansted and Edinburgh airports this year, has seen the airline company launch a regional recruitment drive. BA CityFlyer seeks pilots to fly its fleet of 22 modern Embraer 170 and 190 jets, as Paul Nichols, A CityFlyer Head of Flight Crew Resourcing Strategy, explains: ‘We are in the middle of tremendous growth at BA CityFlyer. 2018 has been our busiest year so far, with a 26 per cent increase in the number of customer seats available to many new destinations compared to last year and the introduction of two new Embraer 190s to the fleet. ‘It’s a fantastic time to join this growing business and we are looking for experienced pilots who enjoy the challenge of flying from a steep approach airport like London City to some of the most beautiful airports in the UK and Europe.’ If you’re interested in applying, you need to know that current entry requirements

for captains has also been expanded. Only applicants who have completed 3000 flying hours on an aircraft greater than 10 tonnes including 1000 hours as the pilot in command will be considered. As part of the recruitment drive, BA has assembled a crack team of ambassadors from all levels of seniority, who will attend roadshows and events around the UK to showcase their roles and answer any questions. These include First Officer Florence Nottage, who has completed 3.5 years as a direct entry pilot at London City. Florence, who hails from France, took her first flying lesson at the tender age of 14. She says: ‘Apart from the flying, what I really enjoy about my job is the people I work with. London City is such a friendly base; we all know each other and when we turn up for work we know we will be working with people we really like and respect. ‘London City is a challenging airfield, I love flying in and out of there, but my favourite destination has to be Nice, it’s such a beautiful city to fly into.’ Visit careers.ba.com for further details.

ump on-board a British Airways flight and you may just see Sir Michael Caine, Olivia Colman or even Joanna Lumley. The trio are three of several celebrities who are appearing in the current in-flight safety video. The film sees seven well-known faces ‘auditioning’ in comical sketches, while delivering all-important safety messages. It’s the second time the airline has used this approach – the first film starred Sir Ian McKellen and Thandie Newton and was watched an incredible 25 million times. It’s also hoped that star power will encourage customers to dig deep for charity. The safety video promotes Flying Start, British Airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief. The first safety video saw a 20 per cent increase in donations, and Carolina Martinoli, BA’s Director of Brand and Customer Experience is excited about building on that, saying: Thanks to our generous customers and colleagues we’ve raised over £19 million for Comic Relief over the past eight years and we hope this video will help us to grow our to total even further, as we support great causes at home and around the world.” i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 13

rom the bucolic beauty of Istria’s rolling hills to a jagged coastline lapped by the Adriatic Sea, this heart-shaped peninsula in Croatia’s northwest has many charms to steal a visitor’s heart. Coastal towns such as the ridiculously-picturesque Rovinj (pictured) offer a helping of history and give neighbouring Italy’s Amalfi coast a run for its money, thanks to their own characterful beauty. The bountiful region will already be on any self-respecting foodies’ radar: there’s a thriving culinary scene here, and the area is known for its decadent white truffles, the freshest seafood and Malvazija, the local blossomy white wine.

o, you’ve reached the ‘hump-day’ in your long-awaited holiday. It seems like a nano-second since the plane touched down on foreign Tarmac, but after a whirl of fun, relaxation and new experiences, the halfway point has arrived. A great way to banish those impending end-of-holiday blues is to hit the shops and seek out a cute keepsake. It’s a lovely way to revisit your vacation long after the tan has faded, and a little token something to take home for friends. There’s an art to souvenir shopping; it’s best done during a leisurely browse, rather than a panicked ‘smash and grab’ at the airport. With the luxury of time, you can find some real treasures. Here’s what’s on Inspired Travel Magazine’s wish list, if you’re asking!

Turkey Shisha pipes have popped up in UK bars over recent years, so why not buy an authentic version while visiting Turkey? Choose one with four pipes, so you can turn it into a social session with friends. With tobacco-free shisha widely available, it can be guilt-free, too.

Venice The Carnival of Venice started in the 12th century as a ‘leveller’ between the classes. Revellers would don a mask and be free to act as they pleased. Today, around three million visitors descend on the fabled canal city annually to celebrate the carnival. A Bauta (a heavily gilded full-face version) or a Columbina (a half-mask, often bejewelled and decorated with feathers) will make a good conversation piece back home, and take care of future fancy dress party emergencies.

Traditional stoneware German beer mugs leave the boring British tankard in the shade. Usually decorated in a pastoral style, they’re available in flight-home-lighter-weight options like silver or porcelain. Lovers of kitsch may not be able to resist the musical versions that strike up a lively polka on the opening of the lid via a thumb hinge. Though you may get some funny looks at security.

Souks are crammed with pottery glazed in a rainbow of colours. Heavily influenced by Islamic or Berber art, the intricate Arabesque patterns elevate a humble vase, pot or tagine (the conical-shaped cooking pot, synonymous with the African country) to a collector’s item. Good-natured haggling between the vendor and shopper to agree the best price creates a memory in itself.

Cohiba cigars are regarded as some of the finest in the world, thanks to the use of best-quality tobacco and unique maturation techniques. Cool fact: Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara helped produce Cohiba’s first cigar, a Behike 56, in the 1960s. It’s available to buy today at around £95 a pop. Too pricey? Try a Medio Siglo Cigar, at a much more affordable £20.

A TASTE OF

INDIA Experience the chilled-out side of this land of intense contrasts in the serene state of Kerala

i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 19

A

s introductions to the vast and diverse country of India go, the tranquil region of Kerala is a very good place to start. Lying on the southern reaches of the nation, it’s a place where traditional houseboats float languidly through the famed backwaters, endless beaches aren’t so much palm fringed as palm thatched, and the breeze carries the harmonious scents of sweet marigold and fragrant Keralan cooking, along with the sounds of life lived for the moment. While pluckier travellers may meet India head-on by experiencing the intensity of cities like Mumbai, or at the other end of the spectrum, the majesty of Rhajastan’s fort towns, Kerala is the perfect midway point. Though a little daunting, the 13-hour flight from the UK to the region’s capital of Thiruvananthapuram (at around 13 hours) is perfect preparation. To truly get the best out of a visit to India, you have to arrive with an open mind. Read: press the pause button on your life back in the UK. Wherever you venture across the nation – with 29 states covering 3.287 million km², it could be a lifetime’s project – you’ll never forget the quality of the light. It’s a light that seems to illuminate the world from the inside out. Everything, from the lush foliage to the soft beaches – and even the cows that roam freely across them (around 80% of India’s 3.4 billion population are Hindu, a religion that deifies the humble creature) – is suffused with this magical light. Similarly, the unique smell will linger long in the memory, created by the arid heat which distills life here into a kind of Eau D’India. It almost defies description, but once experienced, this earthy-yet-delicate aroma is never forgotten. Open a purse full of forgotten rupee notes months after you return, and you’ll be whisked back to the country in a heartbeat. South Kerala is a beach lover’s paradise, with a 600km stretch of the tropical Malabar Coast to select your favourite spot from. The Arabian Sea is swim-ready all year round; its deep blue waters heated by the sun, which only disappears during Kerala’s two rainy seasons. Edavappathy, or the Southwest Monsoon, arrives in June. In mid-october, it’s the turn of Thulavarsham, the Northeast Monsoon. However, these are not the incessant 2 0 inspired- travel.co.u k

monsoons of other regions of India. The heavens generally open for a few hours, before the sun returns to her rightful place in the sky. If you’re unlucky, of course, you might experience a run of rainy days, but these are rare. Even if you do get drenched, the feel of a balmy downpour is wonderfully refreshing. For Ayurvedic practitioners and therapists, it’s a golden time of year. Ayurveda combines the Sanskrit words ‘ayur’ (life) and ‘veda’ (science or knowledge). The ancient practise is believed to have originated in India over 3000 years ago and is still turned to today as one of the country’s traditional healthcare systems. South Kerala’s reputation for anything Ayurvedic is well-known. It’s possible to enjoy treatments in virtually every corner of the state, but forget the Western world’s inflated prices: divine full-body massages are available for around 900 rupees (£10). Many Ayurvedic training schools and academies are based here, so you’re in the best hands. For an almost transcendental experience, we recommend Shirodhara. This therapy involves lying down while a continuous stream of warm oil is poured over the midpoint between your eyebrows. With a concentration of nerve endings here, it’s one of the most blissful 30 minutes you may ever spend. Perhaps it’s no surprise then that Keralans have India’s highest life expectancy at birth, living on average to the fairly ripe old age of 74.9 years. Turn to p59 for our Ayurveda massage review. The country’s interior is home to the famed waterways, natural canals where an overnight stay on a rustic houseboat is a must-do experience. Go further and you’ll see the majestic Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee and spice plantations. National Parks like Eravikulam and Periyar are home to wild elephants, langur monkeys and tigers. Kerala is a popular destination for yogis, who flock here to practise with gurus in jaw-dropping nature. Varkala, a small town strung along the top of a striking rust-red cliff face, boasts some of the best views. There’s a flourishing yoga scene here, and if you’re lucky, you may even witness a hindi ritual on Papanasam beach including the ‘Puja’, where a loved one’s ashes are put out to sea. It’s an extraodinary and humbling sight to behold and will be forever etched in the memory. i n spi r ed- tr avel. co . uk 21

The essentials WHEN TO GO: Sun worshippers are guaranteed average temperatures of around 28°C between October – February. Christmas is a magical season; Christianity has been increasingly embraced by Keralans and you’ll find beautiful Portuguese-style churches (explorer Vasco De Gama arrived here in 1498 and colonised the state for a century and a half). Wildlife lovers will have the best chance of seeing elephants in March and April, when the magnificent creatures spend most of their time cooling off in the water. September is perfect for walkers exploring the Western Ghats; the landscape is all emerald lushness after the monsoon.

NEED TO KNOW: You need a visa. The process is a lot quicker now there’s an e-Visa option. The fee of approximately £100 will allow entry into the country for a maximum 90-day stay. Visit 2 2 inspired- travel.co .u k

indianvisaonline.gov.in. Also make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. Recommended ones, including Diphtheria and Hepatitis A are available on the NHS, but you may need to visit and independent travel clinic for further immunisations; including Malaria tablets. Visit fitfortravel.nhs.uk.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK: When you’ve settled in your location, ask around about ‘pop up’ restaurants. Often run out of locals’ kitchens, you’ll enjoy a homecooked feast, including signature dishes like fragrant Keralan prawn curry and parotta, a delicious layered flat bread made from flour and lashings of ghee, all served on a huge banana leaf. Wash it down with a refreshing mango lassi, made from yoghurt and the soft fruit. Kerala is a dry state; alcohol is served in certain hotels and tourist resorts, but not available to buy legally.

Get your travels off to a flying start. Above: regularly check the announcement boards. Bottom right: make your carry-on count and pack it with ‘must-have’ items; top right: avoid peak times for a more relaxed journey through check-in

TRAVEL TIPS

Clever hacks FOR A HAPPY

AIRPORT EXPERIENCE IT’S IN THE PLANNING Part of the ritual of jetting out and temporarily leaving your life behind is the hustle and bustle of the airport. But it’s an idea to avoid peak times if you can. In general, airports are most crowded on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons, as these days bear the brunt of business travel. And expect Fridays to get even busier in the summer months as recreational travel hits peak flow. So think it through before booking your flights and for a stress-free airport experience.

CANCELLED FLIGHT? They’re the two words we dread reading on the announcement board. There’s nothing like it to burst your bubble of excitement when you arrive at the airport. But savvy travellers don’t get discouraged and head off to the nearest bar. While you wait in line at the ticket desk, be clever with your time. Call the airline – there’s a good chance you’ll reach a phone agent ahead of being first in the queue – and equally as important, you won’t have to negotiate with the same frazzled agent who’s already dealt with dozens of similarly disgruntled fliers.

TIME TO HIT THE LOUNGE... For those of us who only jet off once or twice a year, the annual fees for access to airline lounges might be hard to justify. But if you’re dealing with the previous problem of a cancelled or seriously delayed flight, it might be worth considering buying a daily

pass. One-day passes are available for Admirals Club, Sky Club, and United Club, all for £50 or less. You can relax, eat, drink, freshen up in the shower suites, watch TV and catch up on your emails/binge watch the latest hit Netflix series. Just don’t get so comfy that you miss your flight!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS If your flight is overbooked, don’t accept the first voucher that comes your way. Airlines typically increase their offer until there are enough volunteers willing to give up their seats, so it pays to hold your nerve. And if the airline bumps you involuntarily, you’re well within your rights to ask for cash compensation instead of a voucher.

BE WELL INFORMED Subscribing to flight-status updates on your Smartphone (sign up for these when you check in to your flight), is an extra way to keep your eye on time frames, but don’t use them as your only source of information. Airport monitors are still your best bet for the most up-to-date info.

MAKE YOUR CARRY-ON COUNT If your checked bags get lost or delayed, it’s important to have your essentials with you, so be clever about your carryon luggage. Start with the essentials – prescription medications/medical supplies – then add a phone charger, a change of clothes, plus the documents you need to get through security and into your hotel.

ON THE CASE G

ood prep is key to an easy life, and never more so than when it comes to travel. Take care of the basics – like choosing the right luggage to suit your needs – and you’ll cut out uneccessary stress. Packing will be a breeze, plus you’ll avoid embarrassing scenes at the airport when your whopper of a suitcase won’t make it past eagle-eyed gate staff and into the cabin. Awks.

FLYING HIGH WITH RHOD GILBERT 34 inspired- travel.co .u k

FLYING HIGH

“ ” I had to crack the whip to keep Rhod hard at work

Airways trainer Bobby Nazareth was tasked with getting the famously scruffy comedian looking the part in the airline’s trademark Julian Macdonald uniform; even trimming Rhod’s bushy beard to bring him up to standard.

‘HUMAN SWISS ARMY KNIFE’

Then it was time for Rhod to get to grips with the job he describes as being ‘a human Swiss Army knife’. It’s a role that involves having to become a safety expert, paramedic, chef, waiter, fireman, police officer and agony aunt all at once. But while Rhod shone in certain aspects of the role, other duties took a little more i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 3 5

omics are generally made of stern stuff. Along the tricksy winding road to hitting the big time, they have to learn to deal with rude hecklers, and the comic’s worst nightmare of ‘corpsing’ – forgetting their material and then facing the humiliation of being booed off stage. So, much-loved comedian Rhod Gilbert had learnt the art of thinking on his feet; a skill that came in handy when he signed up to train as cabin crew for an episode in the eighth series of Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience, now available on BBCi Player. In his role as TV presenter, Rhod was put through his paces at British Airways’ Global Learning Academy. Each year, more than two thousand cabin crew hopefuls train at the ‘school’ onthe edge of Heathrow Airport, before taking to the skies for the first time. Over the course of five tough training days, Rhod learnt how to put out fires, deliver a baby and evacuate an aircraft after an emergency landing. But before he could start, British

FLYING HIGH work, as his British Airways mentor, Katharine Nimmo, explains: ‘Rhod was a natural at the safety drills, but he couldn’t get his head around what he called the “first-class fiddle faff” needed for premium service,’ she smiles. ‘But after the session on learning fine wine and cheese pairings, he seemed to get more into the spirit of it, and even nailed how to make the perfect first-class bed.’

A ‘WHIM SLAYER’

After gaining his ‘wings’ at the graduation ceremony, Rhod’s true test was still to come when he was assigned a real flight, with real customers: the BA184 transatlantic route to New York’s Newark airport. With more than 250 customers to look after on the 787-9 Dreamliner flight, he demonstrated the safety routine, served food and drinks, and on the seven-hour flight became a self-proclaimed ‘whim slayer’ in the World Traveller Plus cabin as he manned the food and beverage trolley up and down the aisle. Fellow cabin crew Simon Scaparo was Rhod’s ‘shadow’ during the comic’s maiden flight and was impressed with his overall performance. ‘I had to crack the whip to keep him hard at work, but he charmed the socks off the customers and kept the crew laughing,’ he says, adding: ‘If the stand-up career ever dries up, Rhod, come and join us. I’d fly with you any time!’ As for Rhod, he has new-found respect for the role cabin crews play in the air. On landing back in Heathrow, he praised the British Airways’ crew, saying: ‘Hats off to you… fair play, it’s exhausting. Once you see it in this environment, you realise it is really hard work and there is a lot more to it than anyone would ever realise.’ Perhaps he won’t be taking up Simon’s job offer any time soon.

ummer temperatures in this Morrocan city nudge the mercury into scorching territory (average 40°C), so winter and spring are prime seasons to visit. A first pulse-quickening glimpse of the magical city explains why it’s considered to be the ‘heartbeat’ of the North African country. One thousand years in the making, red baked-mud medina palaces, mosques, ornate squares and a tangle of alleyways sit almost at the foot of the majestic snow-capped Atlantis Mountains. The UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts many historic gems, including the muchphotographed Djemaa el-Fna, the main square that heaves with every aspect of life, from snake charmers and hawkers to market stalls groaning under the weight of mounds of brightly coloured and richly scented spices. 38 i ns pired- travel.co.u k

The city’s faithful are called to prayer from the nearby Koutoubia Mosque’s minaret tower. To the uninitiated ear, the sound can be a little spooky (especially in the dead of night), but soon becomes oddly comforting as it marks the passing of the hours. The exquisite Jardin Marjorelle is a must-see. The gardens and museum were a 40-year labour of love for French artist Jacques Marjorelle and the eponymous crisp blue shade of paint he created is truly memorable. Outdoorsy types can join guided treks into the majestic Atlas Mountains and camp under a canopy of stars (tip: pack LOTS of layers). And the city is also a Mecca for music lovers this time of year, when the ‘Ochre City’ hosts popular events like The Oasis Fest and the Sun Festival.

R

omance is carried on the breeze in this Southern Spanish city, and it’s the awe-inducing beauty of Granada’s most famous attraction, the Alhambra, that puts most visitors in the mood for love. The sprawling complex has kept watch over the city for centuries, first as a military citadel, before Sultan Yusuf 1 moved in during the 14th century. The fierce-looking exterior hides elegant palaces filled with rooms carved with intricate ancient texts, domed ceilings and cool marble. The Court of Myrtles is a stand-out, and the perfect spot for a marriage proposal. Granada (named after the pomegranates that grow abundantly in the area) is also home to the Sacramonte quarter. This is where the original Roma lived, carving their cave abodes out of the hillside. Today, some have been turned into museums, and modern-day travelling folk take up temporary residence in others. Head here for rustic yet delicious tapas and some of the finest traditional Flamenco you’ll be treated to in the city. The surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains are a playground for fitness fans, offering challenging hiking trails and canyoning (abseiling down waterfalls and traversing rivers). However, like the marriage proposal, it’s not for the faint-hearted! In November, the syncopated sounds of jazz fill the air. Now in its 38th year, the International Jazz Festival of Granada has hosted legends including Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis.

One of seven in the cluster of Canary Islands, it’s the biggest and due to its close proximity to the West African coast, can bask in balmy temperatures throughout the winter months. Tenerife is a good choice for families, thanks to many good-quality beach resorts, Siam Park (a huge award-winning water park) and Loro Parque, which is home to a menagerie of animals including gorillas, jaguars. pandas, tigers and killer whales. You can also see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat as they journey through the Atlantic Ocean on their annual migration south.

ubbed the ‘City of 1000 Spires’, the Czech capital gives Paris a run for her money in the architectural beauty stakes. And Prague is never more enchanting breathtaking than during the winter, when the towers and turrets are capped with glistening snow. The famed Christmas markets (open between 1 December 2018 – 6 January 2019) add to the festive atmosphere; you’ll find the best ones in Old Town Square and the aptly named Wenceslas Square. Prague is a sightseer’s dream, with colourful Baroque buildings, the grand Charles Bridge (lined with statues of Catholic saints) straddling the gently flowing Vltava River, and the Gothic drama of St Vitus Cathedral. The medieval Astronomical Clock in the old town still puts on an animated hourly show. For refreshment, visitors are spoilt for choice with the tearooms, built in the elaborate old-European style. And of course, if you’re in the mood for something stronger, there’s the ubiquitous beer. Since brewing Pilsner Urquell in 1842, the Czechs have been famous for producing some of the world’s finest ales and Prague’s pubs offer a wide range of ales, including Kout na Šumavě (just try saying that after a pint or two!)

They offer volunteer projects, ranging from one week to 12 weeks, for people passionate about animal conservation. Fancy helping to look after orangutans in Borneo or being part of the special team in Uganda helping bring back rhinos in the country back from extinction? Turtle conservation in Costa Rica is also an exciting option. Whichever one you pick, you’ll certainly have incredible stories to tell on your return home (if you don’t stay forever)...

Elephant sanctuary volunteering in Thailand THE BASICS: 1 week: £779; each additional week costs £195 per week, excluding flights. You can volunteer here throughout the year for 1 – 12 weeks.

Volunteer with turtles in Costa Rica THE BASICS: 1 week costs £899 (1349 USD); each additional week costs £270 (405 USD) per week, excluding flights. You can volunteer here between 1 July – 15 December each year for 1 – 12 weeks. Arrival day is a Monday, departure day is generally a Wednesday.

The project: This inspiring sanctuary in Thailand is a peaceful home to elephants rescued from ‘begging’ on the streets of Bangkok. Other residents include sun bears, monkeys, gibbons, macaques and much more. There’s an option to help care for these rescued creatures, too. What will I be doing? As an elephant volunteer in Thailand, you will have lots of time with these gentle giants, although be prepared to roll up your sleeves for the elephant-care tasks. With so many hungry mouths to feed, there is a lot of emphasis on harvesting grasses and feeding. Did you know that these beautiful creatures need to eat about five per cent of their body weight in food each day? And as this is the first time that the sanctuary’s elephants have enjoyed foods that are wholly natural to them,

The project: This is a unique opportunity to live in a remote village community on the edge of the Costa Rican coastline, helping to protect nesting and baby turtles. You can’t get any closer to the heart of conservation than this. There are two projects to choose from. The Paradise Beach Project boasts a buzzing community of Costa Ricans and American expats, plus an Instagram-worthy white beach and a cool surfing scene. And the Tropical Beach Project offers a close-knit community of around 100 residents and its own beautiful palm-fringed beach and small fishing port. What will I be doing? A key task for volunteers is keeping a watchful eye on the hatchery for hatching turtles and keeping records. The research is linked to a worldwide study, and helps with global campaigns to end industrial fishing close to land, which sadly impacts on the turtles’ habitats. For many, the night patrols are the

their health has blossomed – along with their appetites. So be prepared for getting many of their meals ready! Other ‘tasks’ include helping at bath time. The elephants love getting a good scrub and hose down from the volunteers. While they might come out squeaky clean, the opposite is true for the volunteers. You are going to get mucky, but happy knowing that you’re making an active contribution to the elephants’ lives and welfare. Due to the grazing nature of elephants, it is important that they are able to roam and explore further afield from the sanctuary. So the volunteers also help with walking the elephants, keeping a close eye on them to stop them eating anything that they shouldn’t! This is a real highlight as you are working closely with the elephant ‘mahouts’; the keepers who work very closely with the creatures. So you’ll enjoy a masterclass in the rituals and ways of the elephants. Apart from the animals… If you can tear yourself away from the sanctuary’s residents, other important maintenance tasks include painting, building and making general improvements.

best. This is when the nesting mummy turtles come out of the ocean undercover of the night to lay their eggs. It’s an incredible sight and one which many volunteers will never forget. Research and measurements on the turtles are recorded, and the eggs transported to a hatchery, where they can hatch in safety. This all happens under the Milky Way, seen in incredible clarity due to the lack of light pollution in this part of the world. Best of all, when the babies finally hatch, you’ll help to release them into the sea!

Apart from the animals… Get involved in the local community, from teaching children to helping with beach conservation. There are plenty of daily chores to do around the project house to keep it in order, but there’s lots of time left to enjoy beachlife, enjoying delicious Costa Rican food and swaying in a hammock between palm trees. It’s a great opportunity to polish up your Spanish, too.

Orangutan conservation in Malaysia THE BASICS: This project lasts 4 weeks. 4 weeks costs £1999. Whilst late-availability is possible, we would advise booking as soon as possible to guarantee your ideal dates.

The project: You’ll get to know and care for some of the world’s most loved primates while volunteering on this orangutan conservation project. The month-long experience, in the wilds of Malaysian Borneo, is broken up into two parts. Part 1: Be introduced to the orangutans in their primate centre The first fortnight is all about getting to know the orangutans and their care routines at a lovely leafy zoo, 90 minutes south of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Working alongside the staff in the primate wing, you will make an important contribution towards improving the general standards of animal welfare in Asia. There have been dramatic improvements across the continent, but more is needed to catch up with the rest of the world. You’ll help with feeding, cleaning enclosures, enrichment activities, construction and education to ensure a better quality of life. While the main focus is on the orangutans and other primates, there’s also an incredible chance to work with other animals, such as the Malayan sun bears, elephants and tigers. Part 2: Wildlife and orangutan conservation in Borneo Then it’s time to head to the island of Borneo and the Corridor of Life, a vast swathe of protected rainforest covering 26,000 hectares. Here, volunteers play a vital role in tree planting and restoration to increase the population of orangutans and other wildlife in the area. Alongside habitat regeneration, you will be able to witness the wildlife-rich region by boat, following the meandering Kinabatangan River and her tributaries. Orangutans, singing gibbons, sun bears, pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys are just some of the creatures you’ll spy. The project is ideal for those searching for an amazing gap-year experience (whatever your age); those looking for a start in animal conservation or those who simply want to make a genuine contribution to global conservation work. Apart from the animals… Community engagement is a key part of the project, so you will also be given the opportunity to bet involved in community development and education programmes.

CREATURE COMFORTS

Rhino conservation volunteering and safari in Uganda THE BASICS: This project lasts 2 weeks. £1695 based on 2 people sharing. Single supplement of £300. Set arrival dates for this project. 2018 dates are: 29 October – 12 November

The project: Wild rhinos in Uganda were poached into extinction in the 1980s, and you will be working with a dedicated charity committed to reintroducing the animals back to Uganda. Since the sanctuary, deep in the African bush, opened in 2005, it has tripled in size. The creatures have roamed the planet for several million years and today, approximately 20 rhinos call this place home. What will I be doing? Volunteers can get involved in a wide variety of tasks that are vital for the protection of the rhinos and the running of the sanctuary. Examples include: • Rhino monitoring and data collection • Sanctuary conservation work • Animal tracking and identification • Bird and wildlife surveys • Bush skills rangers will fully train volunteers for the project and will also teach them how to survive in the wild • Community education • School outreach and activities. So do arrive ready to work hard, there’s a lot to do! But the rewards will make it worth it. You will be living in a beautiful part of Uganda; a country only a few people are lucky enough to visit in their lifetime, and will be joining a friendly and engaging team of staff and volunteers. Seeing rhinos every day as you ‘work’, knowing that you’re contributing to an incredible effort to bring this ancient species back to the wild, is a true privilege.

Apart from the animals… After 10 amazing days at the rhino sanctuary, you’ll head off on an exhilirating three-day safari in Murchison Falls National Park to search for leopards, lions and elephants, before taking a Nile cruise. raham Norton has been a staple on our TV screens for more than two decades. The Irish raconteur has evolved from hosting an innuendo-laden Channel 4 chat show in the 1990s to BBC1’s elder statesmen of chat, to whose red sofa the great and good of Hollywood flock to tell amusing anecdotes and promote their movies/TV shows/albums. Graham’s witty comebacks, honed during his years as a stand-up comedian, oil the wheels of conversation and encourage a sense a fun among his guests. As The Graham Norton Show returns to BBC1 for a new series, we sat down with Graham for a chat to find him a slightly toned down version of his TV alter ego; more thoughtful, but still funny. At 55, he looks trim in shorts and t-shirt, and well-rested after a summer break of two and a half months, spent mostly at his holiday home in west Cork, Ireland. ‘Because I get such a long break, I do genuinely look forward to returning to the show in the autumn,’ explains Norton, stroking the salt-and-pepper beard that divided opinion when he debuted it three years ago. ‘I don’t think I’d be so gung-ho in my 21st year if I only got a week off here and there, but after more than two months I’m excited to get back and see all my London friends and people at work [Norton’s company, So Television, produces the show]. So the excitement is all tied up together.’ Over the years, The Graham Norton Show has come to attract big showbiz names, from Tom Cruise to Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep to Helen Mirren, and Paul McCartney to Madonna. Norton no longer gets starstruck but admits that some stars do still have the power to dazzle him. ‘Once most people are in the room and sat down talking, they’re just another person,’ he explains. ‘Most of the aura goes away, but with some stars, like Tom Cruise or Madonna, it doesn’t. It sounds daft, but there is a sort of otherworldly magic around them you can’t explain, and the audience feels it, too.’ Cruise is very popular with crew and office

CELEB INTERVIEW table behind him, a nerve-calming habit he adopted 30 years ago. ‘I used to get so nervous before gigs,’ he recalls. ‘Once, I was performing at a drinks party for the New Zealand tourist board. At drama school they were very strict about not drinking before performances, but this was a drinks party, so I thought, “Why not?”’ ‘I took a couple of sips and because you’re in a kind of heightened state, you can really feel the alcohol in your system and it took the edge off. Since then I’ve always had one.’ Just the one, though, because Norton drives his dogs home after the show. His canine companions, who accompany him to every show, are Bailey, a labradoodle, and Madge, a rescue terrier. It’s not just the chat show occupying Norton’s time. Latterly he has forged a successful second career as a novelist – his first book, Holding (published in 2016), was a murder mystery set in Ireland. The novel was wellreceived and won him an Irish book prize.

His second, A Keeper, another mystery set in his beloved homeland, is due out this autumn. Norton was surprised at how well he’s taken to fiction writing after working on two autobiographies. ‘The worry was, having said I always wanted to write a novel, it might have turned out to be that I would hate it, like the worst homework ever,’ he laughs. ‘But I’ve loved writing them. There have been challenging days, but never been a day where I’ve thought, “I’m sorry I said yes to this.”’ Although Norton remains at the top of the UK’s chat-show tree, having seen off rivals such as Alan Carr and Jonathan Ross – whose chat show appears sporadically on ITV – after two decades as a king of chat, Norton is beginning to think about the right time to make a graceful exit. ‘In your fifties you do start thinking about when you’ll stop, don’t you?’ he begins. ‘I did say I’d retire from the show by 60, but now I’m not sure, because you’ve still got an awful

lot of life left and work validates you – I know quite a few people who don’t work and they’re bonkers, and so I’d need to have something else to do. ‘At the same time, I’d want to quit the show when people are still liking it and not saying, “Oh, not him again!” And when I’ve still got enough energy to go off and do all of the travelling I haven’t done. I’ll be trying to get all those things right.’ However, it’s not just the day job preventing him from hitting the open road. Norton, who’s currently single, is devoted to his elderly dogs. ‘I’ll go off for a week here or there, but mostly I prefer being with the dogs,’ he admits. ‘People say dogs are such a tie, but they’re such a nice tie, aren’t they? ‘It would be lovely to go travelling a few months around South America, so I think when the dogs go I might take a couple of years off and see the world.’ Read our review of A Keeper on p114.

Workstations in the cabins make it a popular choice with those needing to work on the hoof, too. yotel.com

Why stay?: For the standalone bathtubs in the executive rooms in the Jewel Wing. Guests can luxuriate in Orla Kiely foam bath while watching planes arriving and taking off. Need-to-know: Pitched as a hybrid between a business and resort hotel, enamoured reviewers recommend a short staycation here. Many rooms come with a ‘Handy’ concierge service – a free smartphone which helps guests explore the local area and allows free international calls, too. crowneplaza.com

citizenM Paris Charles de Gaulle Style credentials: This boutique-style airport hotel has a tongue-in-cheek attitude, featuring quirky, modern furniture. These include family fun packages and kidsstay-and-eat-for-free offers. 3hilton.com

Jumbo Stay Hostel Arlanda Airport , Stockholm Style credentials: The Swedish always get it right in the ‘cool’ stakes. This time, they’ve cleverly repurposed a jumbo jet into an airport hotel; a great eco-friendly move, too. Why stay?: For Instagram images that will blow the competition out of the sky. Though the cockpit room is the most pricey suite space onboard, it’s worth it for the panoramic views. Those on a tighter budget can perhaps consider ‘dorm’ options. Inspired Travel Magazine tries out an Ayurvedic spa closer to home

i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 59

Words: Claire Henderson

A

yurveda is one of the world’s oldest healing practices, developed in India more than 5000 years ago. However, health-conscious Westerners are increasingly drawn to the holistic approach to wellness which focuses on the delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit. While it would be lovely to pack a bag and head to the birthplace of the ancient treatments, if you can’t get to the country itself any time soon, there are some fantastic places in the UK to experience authentic first-class Ayurvedic treatments. In London’s North Greenwich, you’ll find Ayurveda Pura – an award-winning luxurious day spa, where you can treat yourself to one-off Ayurvedic treatments or embark on a health-healing journey. My own morning there started with a mini consultation with Dr Deepa Apte (pictured right). The fully qualified Indian doctor is the founder of Ayurveda Pura, as well as a yoga teacher and world-renowned Ayurveda practitioner and lecturer. She explained that the most important principle in the holistic science of health and beauty is the three different body types or ‘doshas’. These are vata (air), pitta (fire) and kapha (water/earth). The aim of a consultation is to find out what an individual’s body type is – first the ‘basic body type’ they were born with, and then to find out about the ‘layer of dust’ they might have acquired through everyday living – using a questionnaire and a pulse and tongue diagnosis. If a ‘dosha’ becomes imbalanced – very common in our fast-paced world – it is believed that disease can be the result, so every treatment is tailor-made to help restore harmony and balance to patients. 6 0 in spired- travel.co.u k

For optimum living, Ayurveda touches on five different areas – foods, herbs, massages, yoga and lifestyle – all based on the different body types. I was diagnosed as a ‘Tridoshic’, a rare mix of all three doshas, before being ushered into a candle-lit room for a blissfully relaxing Abhyanga treatment, an Ayurvedic full body massage. Forget towel-biting pain; this consists of silky oils and organic herbs being massaged into the skin using long, soft strokes, homing deep into all of the energy or meridian points, to help balance my dosha blend. The spa offers more than 10 different types of massages, plus a weight-loss package and a nine-day detox plan. Afterwards, I enjoyed an award-winning Aurveda Pura herbal tea, choosing from an extensive menu that includes Pitta, Vata and Kapha infusions. The spa also offers an Holistic Essentials Signature Facial, using the spa’s own natural, organic skin care range, and there are different sets specifically created with special ingredients to suit each of the doshas. The skin-nourishing luxurious lotions all follow the ancient Ayurvedic principle that advises followers not to ‘put anything on your skin that you cannot put in your mouth or your tongue’. On my massage therapist’s recommendation, I left with a sample of Chyawan Pura – a natural herbal jam packed with more than 30 fruits and herbs. Dr Deepa recommends taking 1-2 teaspoons twice a day for a daily detox. It has an undeniably unusual taste, but it’s much more pleasant than swallowing a chalky vitamin tablet every day – I’m almost at the bottom of my jar and I want more. Though perhaps I’ll have to replace it in India…

EARTH’S GREATEST LIGHT SHOW

6 4 i ns pired- travel.co .u k

A

n inky black night sky, seemingly set alight by dancing lights in dazzling green, violet and gold… there’s surely fewer magical sights on our planet than the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, as they’re more commonly known. While the incredible vision looks otherworldly, as if created and beamed down by a God from another planet, the phenomenon is actually an entirely natural light show. It’s a chemical reaction in the heavens, when the sun’s highly charged particles – whizzing their way towards the magnetic North Pole – collide with the earth’s gases. Science lesson aside, as you read this, we’re already in prime Northern-light-spotting season. Between September – January, visitors have a higher chance of hitting the viewing jackpot. If you’ve decided to tick the experience off your travel bucket list (rather than gazing longingly at Instagram posts), we’ve got the answers to your questions. From the essentials to insider information and the best vantage points – Inspired Travel Magazine is here to give you a fighting chance to see those magical dancing lights. So it’ll soon be you posting those envy-inducing images. (Just promise to send them to us!)

Illuminated skies in Tromsø, Norway

THE ESSENTIALS Q: Where on the planet should I go to see them? A: Any country crossing the latitude line of 66° 33´ 39”, aka the Arctic Circle, is the best location for catching a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. So, we’re talking about Greenland, Canada, Iceland, Norway, and some areas of Sweden, Finland and Russia too. A little closer to home, you’ve got a chance of seeing them in some of Scotland’s most northerly – and scarcely populated areas – Wildaboutscotland.com recommends the Outer Hebridean isles of Lewis and Harris, or Rubha Hunish, the northernmost tip of Skye. Q: Once I’m there, what can I do to maximise my chances of witnessing the lights? A: We don’t want to be a party pooper, but it’s best to manage expectations. A common misconception is that the lights will show up every night. The truth? Like the weather, they can be unpredictable. However, one influential factor is just how low that mercury drops. The chillier it is, the better. When air is cold, it holds less water vapour, so there will be fewer pesky water molecules to ruin the view. Similarly, while it may seem magical if it starts to snow, the white fluffy stuff will also scupper your chances of a sighting. Clear, dark skies with zero light pollution are what you’re keeping everything crossed for.

Q: Are professional ‘light-chasing’ companies a good idea? A: Yes! Experts are equipped with all kinds of clever gizmos to detect where the evening’s light entertainment is most likely to be. ‘Sky cameras’, installed in key places, show realtime activity of the Northern Lights – but it takes a trained eye to know when a pale grey cloud is in fact the Aurora Borealis. Better still? Consider booking with a specialist company, such as The Aurora Zone (theaurorazone. com). They offer the option of an ‘overnight safari’ on their holidays to destinations like Finland and Alaska. Guests can stay in remote

cabins, under wide-open skies far from light pollution, so they have a very real chance of witnessing a display. Q: Will the lights look as dazzling in reality as they do in photos? A: No; unless the ‘show’ is spectacular, you might not capture more subtle light flares. And your Smartphone isn’t going to cut it, ditto your GoPro or digital camera. Invest in/borrow a DSLR camera with a long exposure and wide lens. Lastly, the Aurora Borealis can be fleeting, so have all of the settings and equipment good to go, or risk getting a dodgy shot.

Husky action in the Yukon

White Pass, the Yukon

Obviously, every Arctic Circle country will claim to have bigger, better and brighter NorthernLight action than their neighbours. Here’s our top three picks:

miss the Ishavskatedralen, or Arctic Cathedral. Heralded as an architectural masterpiece, its eastern side features a dramatic glass mosaic that mimics the appearance of a sheer façade of ice.The cool city of Bergen makes another great base for light chasing.

in the daylight hours, from forested valleys to 5000-metre high mountains and thundering rivers. Wildlife is King here, with around 160,000 caribou, 10,000 black bears and 70,000 moose – far outnumbering the 36,000 lucky humans who call the Yukon their home.

Tromsø, Norway This harbourside city, described as ‘the Gateway to the Arctic’, is located 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and is easily accessible from the UK over the winter period. Norwegian flies non-stop from Gatwick in just over 3.5 hours. Tromsø is surrounded by epic fjords and mountains, and within the city, you shouldn’t

The Yukon, Canada Savvy travellers will have Canada’s northwest corner on their radar. Fly into the evocatively named capital of Whitehorse and head to the Yukon River Valley, scattered with accommodation tailor-made for maximum viewing opportunities. Incredibly, 80 per cent of the region remains pristine wilderness, so there’s plenty to explore

Lapland, Finland The Finns make the bold claim that the lights can be seen every other clear night between September – March. Lapland makes a good choice for families because a certain Mr Claus lives here. Fly to Rovaneimi (just 2.5 hours from the UK), and take the little ones to meet Santa in his ‘office’. Reindeer and husky rides are also an option in this frozen winter wonderland.

hether you’re an absolute beginner or learnt to ski before you could walk, planning a ski trip is full of daunting decisions – there’s a mind-boggling choice of resorts to choose from. And those options get wider and more alluring each year, with mountain destinations investing huge amounts on evermore-exciting lift systems and resort facilities. Rob Freeman, Deputy Editor of The Skier, shares his considerable expertise to help narrow the search.

SNOW BUSINESS

Clockwise from above: a well-groomed piste in Ischgl, Austria; mini skiers in Rauris, Austria; navigating the nursery slopes in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Absolute beginners LA PLAGNE, FRANCE Learning to ski can be a tiring business – so having the slopes right outside your accommodation is a bonus. The multicomplex of La Plagne gives doorstep skiing in a collection of 11 mostly purpose-built villages over a vast and, usually, snow-sure ski area. There are fabulous beginner slopes, endless cruising and exceptionally good children’s facilities in all the centres. The older developments could never be described as pretty, but Belle Plagne and the lower rustic villages have an undeniable charm.

RAURIS, AUSTRIA This is the polar opposite of a French purposebuilt resort. Rauris is a picturesque former gold-mining village with a small ski area of gentle slopes – and a great option for firsttimers seeking Austrian charm and a peaceful atmosphere. The setting is splendid, among some of Austria’s highest mountains in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The resort offers free lift passes and equipment hire for children up to 12. And the Crystal holiday firm has some free child places (flights and accommodation) for those who book early for this winter.

KRANJSKA GORA, SLOVENIA With a pretty centre not unlike a Tirolean resort, this village near the Austrian and Italian borders is tailor-made for novices. The nursery slopes are a short stroll from the best hotels, and a children’s area has moving-carpet lifts. Scope for advanced skiing is limited (although there is a World Cup black run and an incredibly impressive ski-jump complex), but gentle tree-lined slopes provide good progression for beginners. Ski schools are English-speaking, well-organised and friendly.

ALPBACH, AUSTRIA Voted Europe’s most beautiful village, this Tirolean resort is a sweet confection of heavily timbered chalets crowded around a lovely slim-spired church. Brits have long been beguiled by its charm and the village is proud of its reputation for introducing beginners to the joys of the slopes. Newbies can use the dedicated novice area in the village centre before they move on to the scenic slopes of the Wiedersberghorn. Alpbach links to nearby Wildschonau, forming the Ski Juwel network. i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 6 9

ELLMAU, AUSTRIA Originally a farming village, Ellmau is wonderful for families, has super nursery slopes and is renowned for its teaching facilities for children. An attractive village in the Tirol, it links in with a vast ski area full of unintimidating intermediate slopes known as the Ski Welt. The surrounding area is perfect for families with a range of abilities to explore – and few resorts have a better choice of lovely mountain restaurants dotted all over the slopes.

LA TANIA, FRANCE For a purpose-built resort, car-free La Tania has more charm than most and is a great family friendly way to be part of the fabulous skiing of Les Trois Vallées, one of the biggest linked ski areas in the world, encompassing Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens. The skiing is right on the doorstep of the accommodation, which comprises a good selection of hotels, self-catering apartments and catered chalets. With trees lining the slopes, you can ski happily here in bad weather and the village has good-value bars and restaurants.

Above: heading out into Les Trois Vallées. Below: snowman fun in Cortina d’Ampezzo

OBERGURGL, AUSTRIA This is one of the highest and most snow-sure resorts, even without a skiable glacier. The little Tirolean village is a firm favourite with British families who return every year for the queueand crowd-free slopes. It’s quiet, traditional, and very welcoming. Obergurgl is the highest parish in Austria; there’s no through traffic and there are excellent facilities and ski teaching for children.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, ITALY Oozing chicness, old money and new fashion, Cortina’s traffic-free centre, based on the Corso Italia, is a study in timeless style – the streets are full of jewellers, boutiques and antique shops. The surrounding Dolomites are breathtaking and the skiing, though fragmented, is glorious. It also has some superb beginner slopes in the Socrapes area, with instructors who are especially good with youngsters. The vast array of slopes are ideal for family skiing, and with some of the world’s most superb mountain restaurants. i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 7 1

Les Grands Montets has a vast choice of north-facing descents on glacial terrain. Other classic challenges include the iconic 24-kilometre Vallée Blanche, which starts with a dizzying cable car to the magnificent Aiguille du Midi.

ST ANTON, AUSTRIA Centred around the awesome Arlberg region, St Anton has thrilling off-piste, both above and below the tree-line. From Albona, experts can often dive down through waist-high powder to the forested Verwall valley or climb the Maroikopf for fabulous runs down to Langen, leave the lifts behind at Hinter Rendl or brave challenges on the 2800m-high Valluga mountain. St Anton has recently been fully linked by gondola to nearby Zurs and via Lech to Warth-Schröcken, to form one of the world’s great ski networks.

On the west coast, Whistler is the biggest ski area in North America – and all-in-all about the best resort on the continent. It largely succeeds in being all things to all skiers (and boarders), but experts are exceptionally well catered for. The classic bowls of Whistler, West and Bagel, with myriad chutes and gullies, can satisfy thrill-seekers for weeks. Blackcomb features extremely steep chutes including the notorious Couloir Extreme and dizzying bowls reached by Spanky’s Ladder.

ISCHGL, AUSTRIA Tucked away in the Paznaun Valley at the western end of the Tirol, Ischgl boasts high slopes with reliable snow, served by one of the most modern and sophisticated lift systems. It offers a massive range of slopes for adventurous intermediates, but also serves experts fabulously. The black runs fully justify their rating and even the reds can be genuinely testing. Steep runs radiate from Palinkopf, Greitspitz and Pardatschgrat and the Piz Val Gronda cable car has opened up a large area dedicated to free-ride.

ancouverites have been crossing the Capilano Suspension Bridge since 1889. Today, they are joined by tourists keen to combine the thrill of being suspended 70m above the flowing Capilano River with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding forest. Adrenaline junkies can up the ante by heading to the nearby Cliffwalk. This semi-circular construction juts out from a granite cliff face and reinforced glass sections allow for incredible 360 degree views. IN PRAISE OF THE GREAT RAIL JOURNEY

Shake off your childhood memories of boredom or the frustrations of the daily commute, and the delights of a classic rail journey may well take you by surprise

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS

I have seldom heard a train go by and not wished I was on it

T

Paul Theroux, travel writer

rains don’t half come in for some flack in our everyday lives. When we’re already running late from A – B, the inconvenience of a delayed service, even if it’s only a couple of minutes, is enough to tip many of us over the edge. Perhaps it’s time to return to our memories of childhood rail journeys; when the ticking clock simply didn’t feature and we felt as if we had all of the time in the world. My own recollections? An annual pilgrimage made with my sister and mum every year, from the depths of the Scottish Highlands down to Yorkshire to visit our favourite cousins. It was a long nine-hour rail journey with many changes, sometimes more if the snow had laid down her thick carpet, but it always had an exciting air of adventure. It was the simple things that brought pleasure: a lukewarm cheese and tomato toasted sandwich from the buffet car; feeling safe and deliciously cosy when the rain lashed down on the windows; being lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking sensation. Of course, I was too young to fully appreciate the cinematic splendour we were passing through: that came later. I can trace my desire to become a travel journalist back to those nostalgia-tinged days. Increasingly, many of us are rediscovering the pleasures and romantic vibe of ‘slow’ travel on a train. Sure, certain journeys are only practical by air, but if you have the time and inclination, embarking on a classic rail journey could be a holiday to remember. It can also gain you access to some of the most remote places on the planet.

And when you consider how long the check-in process at the airport can be, compared to simply passing through a ticket barrier and onto the train waiting to spirit you away to new, exciting destinations, it’s so, well, straighforward and stress-free. Then there’s the – no small – issue of space and comfort. Budget airlines have made us perfect the art of concertinaring our bodies into teeny tiny spaces, but there’s generally plenty of room on trains to stretch your legs out and move around. This makes it a childfriendly option, too, and the little folk can move around in the carriages when they get fidgety. You can also rest easy knowing that you’ve made the soundest ‘green’ choice. According to The Guardian, worldwide, motorists account for 71% of transport CO2 emissions, air travel makes up 12.3%, with rail travel only claiming a measly 1.8%. On longer trips, an easy rhythm will develop – when your eyes temporarily tire of absorbing the epic scenery, you can nap or tap into the meditative, almost hypnotic qualities of a train rocking and rolling through the landscape. There’s nothing to do but gaze into the middle distance and just ‘be’. And last, but not least: a train is your own personal viewing platform, moving through ever-changing landscapes and giving you a mind gallery of impressions of the place you’re visiting. If you’re tempted to get your own ticket to ride, why not hop onboard the Inspired Travel Magazine Express and consider these classic rail journeys?

There was a short period when I became interested in girls. Eventually, I got married and went back to railways Michael Palin, self-confessed trainspotter and presenter of travel shows including Great Railway Journeys

Alpine adventures THE JOURNEY: The Albula Railway on the Bernina Express WHERE: Chur in East Switzerland to Tirano, North Italy on the Bernina Express DISTANCE: 76km, around four hours With 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and top elevations of 7392 feet above sea level, this classic route would make an excellent rollercoaster ride at speed. But the smart red Bernina Express meanders through the Alpine 8 0 inspired- travel.co.u k

wonderland at a fairly leisurely pace, and has panoramic windows in every carriage, so you won’t be madly craning to catch a view. Regular trains also cover the route, but they’re not direct, and won’t look half as impressive on your insta-feed, of course. The route, on the narrow-gauge Albula railway, begins in the serene chocolatebox-perfection of Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city, before it traverses through a UNESCO World Heritage site of dramatic mountains, thundering waterfalls and depthless ravines. Goose-bump-inducing moments are a-plenty, including passing over the 213ft-high Landwasser Viaduct, affording you an eagle’seye view of the surrounding landscape. Our tip:

be sitting on the right-hand-side of the train for this part of the journey. The ascent up to the Bernina Pass is a bucket-list moment – although with the route’s highest point of 7392 feet, vision might be compromised by the blizzard conditions that are found here most of the year. Hardy hikers can jump off at the tiny station of Ospizio Bernina to bag another Alp. What goes up, must come down, and so the train wends its way past the magnificent Palü glacier and glittering Poschiavo lake. The extra bonus of the journey? Catch an early train (booking is strongly recommended) and you’ll cross the Italian border into the town of Tirano just in time for a cheeky Aperol. Salute!

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS

A smooth operator THE JOURNEY: Tokyo – Osaka on the Kodama Shinkansen WHERE: Japan DISTANCE: 515km, around four hours It’s not just about the journey with this choice: Japan is famous for its super-sleek bullet trains, nicknamed after their appearance and impressive speeds. Of course, it you’re hoping to savour the views of this astoundingly beautiful country, you might want to leave the Nozomi

Shinkansen to the stressed-out commuters who need to travel at 340km p/h to be at their desks on time. Instead, its sister train, the Kodama, travels at a more ‘leisurely’ 285km/h. It stops at every station along the route, which curves along the south-eastern coast of the country, the Pacific Ocean on one side, the ever-changing interior on the other. After the intensity of the modern metropolis of Tokyo, the train whisks passengers past the country’s highest peak, Mount Fuji. Japan’s most recognisable landmark is an active volcano, and her 12,389 ft summit is perpetually capped with a perfect ring of snow. Most passengers will leave the train at the penultimate stop of Kyoto. This city once served as the capital and the emperor’s

residence from 794 – 1868. Its exceptional historic value saved the city from being targeted by the atomic bomb during the Second World War. Today, visitors flock here in spring to witness the ethereal blossom season, when whole districts are transformed into blush-pink wonderlands. Temples abound here, too, including the Nanzenji Temple, a Zen temple featuring a calm-inducing stone garden. To really soak up the culture, why not try a Japanese tea ceremony? The traditional, centuries-old, ritual can take several hours to perform (and years to master), but there are shorter tourist-friendly versions. Equal parts art, hospitality and meditation, it’s one experience you’ll file under U for ‘unforgettable’.

i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 81

Now Steppe this way THE JOURNEY: The Trans-Siberian route on the Golden Eagle WHERE: Moscow – Vladivostok DISTANCE: 9288km, 14 days This epic journey has been likened to a steel ribbon that cuts across Russia’s vast hinterland, from east to west. Finding it hard to compute the vast distance? Perhaps adding that there are 10 time zones between beginning and end will help… or fry your brain even further. And let’s not even get started on

8 2 i ns pired- travel.co .u k

the different eco-climates you’ll travel through. Regular trains are a good option if you want to stop off and explore this diverse country at leisure. But do remember that we’re talking in terms of days between places, rather than a handful of hours, so leave plenty of time or risk having to cut out stops at the end. However, if you’re hankering after a bit of luxury and glamour, The Golden Eagle TransSiberian Express is the only way to go. The train offers three standards of sleeper cabins – from an Imperial Suite, complete with a lounge area, underfloor heating and a complimentary bottle of Dom Perignon – to gold and silver cabins. Whichever option you plump for, the epic journey offers a fascinating introduction to the country. There’s a plethora of things to do in Moscow, but top of the list should be a visit

to Red Square, and the instantly recognisable St Basil’s Cathedral with its brightly coloured onion domed spires. A great insider tip? Head underground to the city’s subway system, which has the feel of a subterranean museum. Many of the stations, built as symbols of communist pride in the 1930s, are lavish affairs, complete with crystal chandeliers, marble pillars and bronze statues. As Moscow fades from view, the route crosses the Ural mountains and through the endless steppe (grassland plains) and onto Lake Baikal. It’s the deepest lake in the world, holds 20% of the planet’s freshwater and takes five hours to circumnavigate. If you’re lucky enough to be aboard the Golden Eagle, the grandeur is off the scale when a Soviet Era locomotive steam train hauls you and your fellow passengers along this section of track.

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS

Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown. Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine, to them, alas! we return

Wild, untamed beauty THE JOURNEY: Canadian Rockies Circle on the Rocky Mountaineer WHERE: Return trip to Vancouver DISTANCE: Approx 2000km, 10 days Glacier-fed lakes, endless carpets of green forest and an abundance of wildlife are just some of the things to get excited about ahead of this thrilling train journey. For the best seats

in the house, book a ‘Gold Leaf’ ticket. This lets you ride and dine in the traditional Old American style ‘Dome Cars’. These feature an upper level with windows on all sides and overhead, for optimum sightseeing action. And if your train driver spots some ambling bears, he may even slow right down for a photo opp. The renowned route travels into the heart of British Columbia’s interior, through a dramatically changing landscape, from lush green fields, forests and winding river canyons to the desert-like environment near Kamloops. These are seriously painterly vistas. Another unforgettable highlight is found near

Banff. The Columbia Icefield is one of North America’s easiest to acess and you’re whisked via ice explorer vehicle to the middle of the Athabasca Glacier for a fascinating geology lesson. It’s the stuff of a true explorer’s dreams. In complete contrast is Yoho National Park, home to other natural wonders including a rock bridge hewn by the elements, spanning the marvellously monikered Kicking Horse River. An added bonus of a circle tour of course is that if you miss one incredible view on the way, you can make sure you capture it on the way back! Believe us, this is scenery you’ll be happy to see on the return leg of the journey. i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 83

true delight of travel is the unexpected; not knowing what might be around the next corner. Save for the classic balustraded walkway, this thundering waterfall looks like it has been plucked from the Amazonian rainforest or a Tahitian idyll, right? So you may be pleasantly surprised to find out it’s a little closer to home. In Nice, France, to be precise. Located on Castle Hill, the manmade artifice was actually built in the 19th century, where a medieval keep once stood. Although a lovely attraction in its own right, the view from the waterfall’s crest offers up an outstanding glimpse of the coastline of the French Riviera, lazily lapped by the inky-blue Mediterranean Sea.

Q&A

Air France

Paolo Basso

Italian-Swiss sommelier Paolo Basso was named the World’s Best Sommelier in 2013 and produces two of his own wines, Il Rosso di Chiara and Il Blanco de Chiara, in honour of his daughter. He has worked with Air France since 2014, using his expertise to choose the best wines to serve on-board. He shares his secrets with Inspired Travel Magazine Is it true that our sense of taste changes at altitude? Do you factor that in when you are considering the wines you will recommend to Air France? Yes; our sense of taste changes at altitude because the air is drier. Our mouths produce less saliva and are drier too. Despite that, we don’t do tastings in the air because it’s too complicated from a logistics perspective and security regulations. But it’s why we choose more full-bodied and supple wines, without high acidity and tannins (which are found in grape skins and can add too much dryness to the wine). How do you decide which wines are going to be chosen for the Air France on-board service?

There aren’t a set number of wines to choose from, but it does depend on which time of year we’re making the selection for. I often ‘blind test’ so don’t know anything about the wine apart from how good it tastes. We often choose wines that we’ll serve for around two years. Do you work closely with the chef who will create the on-board meals?

It’s the other way around: the choice of wine

is made well before the chef creates his menu, so I’ll select wines that I know will pair easily with different dishes. Do you have different criteria for the wines you select for business class?

No; it’s all about quality. When our customers board the plane, our aim is to make them feel as if they’re already in France from a gastronomic perspective. All of our wines are selected because they express the local characteristics of their region of origin. Were you involved with Air France’s new business class lounge at Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport? No, but all the wines and champagnes served in Charles De Gaulle 2 Air France Business CDG lounges are wines I selected; it’s the same as the selection available in business class on Air France flights.

Does your job involve flying to vineyards around the world?

My work involves a lot of travelling, of course. But as well as helping me find the best wines for our customers, the experience of flying helps me understand what our passengers want and expect. i n spi r ed- tr av el. co . uk 87

Q&A

Have any of the wines you’ve picked for Air France become regulars in your own fridge or cellar? It’s my passion and I’m constantly curious, so my wine cellar features a wide diversity of wines from several countries. Of course, France is well represented! Are there any new wine trends on the horizon that Inspired Travel Magazine readers should know about?

There’s an increasing trend towards organic or biodynamic-produced wines. We are carefully monitoring this part of the industry and if we can source wines of the highest quality and standard, they may be selected for our onboard wine list in the future.

When our customers board the plane, our aim is to make them feel as if they’re already in France from a gastronomic perspective Paolo Basso

Have you got your eye on any up-andcoming wine producers? Yes; we are always on the look-out for new producers, but because of the large quantities Air France look to buy, it’s not always easy for the smaller producers to respond to the airline’s demand. If you had to choose one wine as the last you’d ever drink, what would it be? That’s easy: champagne! airfrance.co.uk i n spi r ed- tr av e l. co . uk 89

TRAVEL ADVICE

WORKCATION?

HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.. . Working abroad is a great way to shake up the nine-to-five, and also offers a satisfying and authentic way to experience another culture. However, to guarantee a smooth transition – whether it’s for a fleeting fortnight-long project or for a semi-permanent postition – expert Janthana Kaenprakhamroy says there are six essentials to consider before you take off for your career adventure...

1

CHECK YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS

In the EU you won’t need a visa to work, but in some EU countries, like Denmark, you’ll need to register with the immigration authorities after a few months. Outside of the EU, you’ll need a visa which specifically gives you permission to work. Check gov.uk for requirements.

2

BE ADAPTABLE

Each country has its own, sometimes quirky, ways of doing business. For example, in China, it’s polite to present your business card with both hands, and in Scandinavia it’s not perceived as rude to interrupt your boss. Many governments publish in-depth advice for foreign workers: check the website of your host country’s embassy and the government department responsible for business.

3

SORT OUT INSURANCE

As well as insurance for your actual trip, you might need to cover potential professional liabilities. And you

may find that many insurers require you to sign up for a more comprehensive policy than you need for your workcation. One way to get exactly the right cover without paying for extras you don’t need, is via Tapoly (tapoly.com). The award-winning company offers on-demand flexible insurance policies to cover lots of different risks, so you can tailor it to your specific needs.

4

HOME SWEET HOME

Don’t sign a lease before you’ve had a chance to look around. Airbnb (airbnb.co.uk) offers short-term accommodation to suit most budgets, and many house-swap websites have sprung up in recent years, including lovehomeswap.com.

5

KEEP THE TAXMAN HAPPY

Wherever you’re moving, you’re likely to be exempt from paying tax for the first few months. After that, you may be covered by a tax treaty between your host country and the UK – a comprehensive list can be found at gov.uk. If you’re going to be away for more than a year, you’ll need to notify HMRC well ahead.

6

SAFETY FIRST

The foreign travel advice section at gov.uk is your go-to digital destination to get an accurate picture of the country you’re intending to temporarily relocate to. Disease, conflict and natural disasters are constantly monitored, so check the situation just before you go. And keep in mind that some insurance companies won’t cover countries declared a ‘no-go’ zone by the government. You could face double trouble if you don’t check your insurance provider’s policy.

ABOUT JANTHANA KAENPRAKHAMROY Janthana Kaenprakhamroy is an expert on freelancing and the sharing economy. She founded Tapoly to offer the flexibility and affordability that many traditional insurance companies don’t offer to the sharing economy. Tapoly was listed in the top 100 companies in the European Fintech Awards last year and Janthana was recently named one of Women In Finance’s Fintech Champions. THE CHECK-IN Inspired Travel Magazine checks out Meliã White House Hotel in London and finds that business is the order of the day in the executive Level Lounge

LOCATION: As central London locations go, the four-star hotel hits the tourist sweet spot. Attractions close by include Madame Tussauds – where you can get up close to lifelike waxworks of Royals of the moment, Prince Harry and Meghan – and London Zoo, where you can see all manner of other exotic creatures. The cool Marylebone neighbourhood, close to the hotel’s address on Albany Street, is worth a visit, too. Marylebone’s independent shops, pubs and restaurants offer an intimate village vibe in the heart of the capital. And nature lovers can head to Regent’s Park; one of London’s magnificent green spaces, offering a peaceful place to stroll and get lost in your thoughts. THE HOTEL: From the outside, the eightstorey X-shaped block is distinctly British Art Deco in style. Which makes stepping inside a little surprising. Here, its proud Spanish roots are revealed – the hotel is owned by Spanish global hotel brand Sol Meliã. Guests can choose from 581 bedrooms with décor ranging from glitzy to traditional. The corridors have more than a feeling of a stately old cruise ship – think low ceilings, dark wooden doors and gleaming brass fittings. LET’S TALK BUSINESS: Mixing business with pleasure? Then the Meliã White House has it covered, thanks to The Level, an exclusive area of the hotel dedicated to helping inspire those guests with work to do. Access to the chic, light and airy lounge comes with a stay in a level room or suite and offers an array of services to make the time simply fly by. These include a private check-in, complimentary breakfast, all-day snacks and when evening falls, a tapas and bar service. (Though perhaps it’s an idea to tackle the critical reports before ordering your first glass of wine…) There are also innovative meeting rooms if some face-to-face time is required (with space for up to four people), iMac useage, and if you’re a regular face in The Level, you can take advantage of the Travel Light Service. This means you can leave regularly-used items at the hotel until you next return. Oh, and speaking of which, you can also request private transfers to and from the airport (although the hotel is a stone’s throw from Great Portland Street underground station). Now, that’s the business. Visit melia.com in sp ir e d - tr a ve l.co.uk 9 7

fter a quarter of a century spent in partnership with Marriott International, Bill Keffer is a man with pretty good instincts when it comes to the expectations of the global business traveller. As the current general manager of the magnificent 5-star JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai, he proudly oversees the hotel’s conference and business space. And in a city renowned for its super-sized, neck-craning buildings, he believes that no other hotel comes close to offering what the Marquis does. ‘First and foremost, we are a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) hotel, and what makes us different as a business hotel is our capacity to host groups of up to 1000 to meet, eat and sleep in one location,’ he says. ‘We are the only hotel in Dubai that can host groups of this scale. Previously, conference and event organisers would have had no choice but to split their group between numerous different hotels within the same city.’ And what a business space that is. It covers over 8000m2 of indoor and outdoor event space, including an impressive 32 meeting 10 0 in spired- travel.co.u k

rooms for clients to choose from. The largest rooom comes in at 1392m2. ‘Executives choose us based on our business-oriented facilities and capacity to cater to their individual needs, and to do so intuitively,’ says Keffer, who has been at the hotel’s helm since 2012. Although primarily a business hotel, the Marquis also boasts a grand total of 1608 luxury suites and rooms. Located within two iconic towers in Business Bay on Sheikh Zayed Road, the hotel provides guests with everything they require for a truly special stay in the United Arab Emirates. Each of the suites feature plush bedding, modern technology and a marble bathroom; with many enjoying waterfront views, as well as the dramatic Dubai skyline. In lulls between high-powered business meetings, there’s plenty close by to offer a welcome distraction, inluding Dubai Mall (for those in the mood for a retail therapy fix), the Dubai Opera and the Burj Khalifa. This needlelike skyscraper has held onto its crown as the world’s tallest building since 2010. ON LOCATION MACHU PICCHU, PERU

I

f you’re lucky enough to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of new seven wonders of the world, you might have to shake off feelings of déjà vu. The stone city, once home to the Inca civilisation in the 15th century, is perched 8047m above sea level and has been photographed to infinity. The adventure begins with a picturesque train journey from the city of Cusco, 70 miles away; a suitable warm-up act for the sights that await. Forget what you think you know: in reality, this place is spellbinding. You’ll marvel at the intense lushness of the vegetation and the backdrop of mountains spiked against the sky. The world’s finest historians are still puzzling over the exact reason the citadel was built on Machu Picchu, which means Old Mountain. You may also find yourself asking another eternal question: but would Tesco do a home delivery?

SINGLE

Keep yourself (and the little ones) entertained in-flight

Mark Peckmezian

SUEDE The Blue Hour (out now)

Judging by the soaring, passionate vocals of first single The Invisibles, Suede’s hotly anticipated eighth album The Blue Hour will be an emotional rollercoaster of a ride. Brett Anderson’s distinctive voice still combines thrilling potency with an undercurrent of vulnerability. The British alt-rock band have described the album as ‘progressive’ and ‘troubling’, so expect some unusual elements alongside the more traditional songwriting.

ROBYN Missing U (out now)

It might not have the immediacy and power of Dancing On My Own but the Swedish dance singer is making a big impact, with the recently released Missing U. It has the same heart-tugging mix of breathy vocals and synth dance backing and is the teaser for Robyn’s forthcoming album.

MACY GRAY

ONES TO WATCH

Ruby (7 September)

PHOEBE BRIDGERS Graeme Anderson

Hot on the heels of single Sugar Daddy is a strong return to form from the sassy singer songwriter, whose raspy growling vocals continue to send a shiver down the spine. Gray has admitted her tenth album is ‘gritty and grimy and dirty’, compared to her critically acclaimed jazz covers release Stripped, and it certainly delivers.

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon (5 October)

The Bunnymen’s new album features 13 songs from the past, ‘reinterpreted’, plus two new compositions to add interest. If the sparse, slower – or in their words ‘transformed’ – version of Seven Seas is anything to go by, it may disappoint diehard fans missing the energy and immediacy which made the band such a powerful presence back in their heyday. Still, worth a listen due to the calibre of songs including Lips Like Sugar, The Killing Moon and the iconic The Cutter.

Phoebe wrote her first song aged 11, busked as a teenager and Ryan Adams recorded her three-song Killer EP in his studio. Album Stranger in the Alps was released earlier this year but she’s starting to be noticed in the UK after UK live dates over the summer. Bridgers’ ethereal folk vocals display assured songwriting skills and hint at longevity. Check out Scott Street and Motion Sickness on Spotify.

ELDER ISLAND Dominika Scheibinger

ALBUMS

Words: Catherine Eade

(Metropolis Recordings/ Four Thieves Records)

The Bristol-based trio have been together a while but never quite ‘made it’. That could change as they are out on tour this autumn, showcasing Katy Sargant’s mellifluous, soulful vocals that sit atop layered keyboard, guitar, bass and cello, filling the space between pop and dance. Listen to Bamboo on Spotify for a taste.
