Bermuda’s National Drink is a Little Like Her National Dance. Unique, exciting and passed down for generations.
It’s true for our exotic Gombey dancers, who duck and twirl in practiced moves handed down since the 1700s. And it’s true for our notorious Dark ’n Stormy® cocktail. Made with two oz. of Gosling’s Bermuda Black Seal Rum, twirled with Gosling’s Ginger Beer over ice, this exciting drink’s been helping Bermudians keep cool for generations. Happily, you’ll now see it at more and more fine establishments here in the States. And Gosling’s Black Seal at more and more spirits retailers. But to see a Gombey in person, you’ll need to board a plane and come to Bermuda. And would that be so bad?
Gosling’s. For Seven Stubborn Generations. www.goslingsrum.com We make it slowly, stubbornly. Please enjoy it slowly, responsibly. 40% ABV. Product of Bermuda. Castle Brands, NY, NY.

Just outside the residential premises await limitless opportunities to commune with nature. Whether you prefer watching whales, swimming with dolphins, sailing, diving, or snorkeling, you will not be let down by all that Punta Mita has to offer. And those who prefer to stay dry can enjoy scenic hiking or horseback riding. For a dose of Mexico’s vibrant charm, the quaint laidback town of Puerto Vallarta is just an hour’s drive away. Amidst old-world cobblestone streets and traditional Mexican architecture, you’ll discover a thriving arts community, gourmet dining, and vivacious nightlife. While you will be impressed by the impressive array of amenities and residential properties, what firmly puts the Punta Mita Resort in a class of its own is its pair of signature golf courses. Pacifico Golf Course
Nuna Pool Four Seasons, Punta Mita
Pacifico is the stunning championship course that inspired Conde Nast Traveler readers to name Four Seasons Punta Mita as the world’s number one golf resort in both 2006 and 2008. Pacifico uniquely features an optional par 3 “19th hole” called the “Tail of the Whale.” Unlike the 19th holes you’ll find at most courses, where you’re toughest decision is between “straight” or “on the rocks,” here, club choice will be your toughest call. The hole has you targeting the world’s largest natural island green some 200 yards away. Bahia, the latest addition to Punta Mita’s golfing empire, opened in late 2008 and features six ocean holes. Playing between 5,180 and 7,030 yards, Bahia is every bit as amazing as its sister course ad provides golfers with a challenging counterpart to Pacifico. Punta Mita Resort is located on Bahia de Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. For more information on the resort - www.puntamita.com.

With the release of the Callaway Razr line of clubs every level of golfer has the ability to improve their game and showoff new found accuracy with friends. Callaway repositioned the weight to the lower portion of the club to create a large sweet spot. The all-stainless steel irons produced high ball speeds this combined with a stronger lofts will definitely give you more yards on your shots. The Razr Tour are designed for the better players who need more workability but still give you a little forgiveness. NIKE DRIVER The Nike SQ Machspeed Black Driver pushes the boundaries of technology to produce explosive distance and amazing control off of the tee. The Driver’s aerodynamics and light weight allow the player to generate greater club head speed with less effort, resulting in longer drives. Club head design also provides for a lower ball flight with less spin, again resulting in greater club head speed and increased distance off of the tee. In addition to explosive distance, comes the Driver’s adjustability. An eight position hosel allows the club to be set for any type of swing or shot shape - helping to correct even the worst hooks and slices. The Nike SQ Machspeed Black Driver has a striking sleek black profile and comes in both a square and round model. The square head version offers more forgiveness and stability, while the round version is designed for the better player in mind and provides for more workability and shot shaping. Feedback and feel are exceptional in both models and allows the player to feel precisely where on the club face the ball was struck. www.nike.com

Rule Golf is the innovative new line of products made by Joe Borgenicht, a writer that used to putt to relieve tension and clear his head. He realized that he needed tools that would put both feel into his game and be effective. Joe wanted a portable towel that would allow him to clean his ball while looking at his line, all while maintaining feel. Since Joe could not find a product that met his expectations, he decided to create his own. He called this ergonomic towel ruletwentyone. He says, “The one-handed cleaning motion

10 EXOTIC GOLF ESCAPES By Jennilyn Q. Salvador From its humble beginning as a way for Scottish shepherds to kill some time, golf has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry and a game that’s played just about everywhere on Earth. For the adventurous golfer, that means that there’s no reason to leave the clubs at home when heading off on a business trip or vacation. Whether you want to play eighteen holes against a backdrop of jungle, desert, ocean, or snow-capped mountain, there are tee times available. And once you get out on the course, there’s no reason to worry about language barriers; the international language of golf is spoken everywhere. Here are ten of the best travel destinations to consider when you decide to make your passport the 15th club in your bag.
HAWAII Anyone who’s ever spent a January in a cold, snowy climate watching the PGA Tour kick off its season in Hawaii knows how beautiful golf can be on this island state. Because the state is composed of eight main islands, the golf can be different depending on which island you decide to tee it up on. First timers to this tropical paradise should probably opt for an island-hopping tour to get a feel for the perks of the individual areas. Each will have something that makes it stand out. For instance, Oahu, the most populated of the islands, is home to the greatest number of courses. On the Big Island, the golf offers some of the most spectacular ocean views of any courses in the world.
SCOTLAND
MEXICO
Playing a few rounds in the birthplace of golf is still probably tops on the Bucket List of most golfers. Aside from the Old Course at St. Andrews, which is considered sacred ground to fans of the sport, the list of hallowed courses in Scotland is beyond impressive. Just the thought of being able to tee it up at Royal Troon, Carnoustie, or Muirfield should bring a tear to the eye. In 2014, The Ryder Cup will come full circle when it returns to Gleneagles, the site of an informal match between Americans and Europeans in 1921. The 2014 event will be played on the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course. If you’re planning a golf pilgrimage to Scotland, Michael Murphy’s “Golf in the Kingdom” is required reading.
The home of Lorena Ochoa offers American golfers the unique ability to hop on a plane in the morning and tee off in a foreign land by lunch time. Just south of Cancun, in the Riviera Maya, is the El Camaleon Golf Club. The club is the host of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the only PGA Tour event played in Mexico. The event, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, is played on the club’s Greg Norman-designed course. If you get tired of coastal golf, don’t worry; Mexico is home to over 150 golf courses. Head inland and see how much more yardage you get from your driver when you play elevations of up to 5,000 feet.

SPAIN
CANADIAN ROCKIES
“Golf” may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of Spain, but that doesn’t mean you should leave your clubs behind when traveling to this beautiful and diverse European country. There are over 300 hundred courses in Spain, but Valderrama is by far the most famous. The site of the 1997 Ryder Cup, this Robert Trent Jones course is one of the world’s finest locations for a round of golf. Also high up on the list is the Stadium Course at PGA CatalunyaGolf Resort. The course has been host to the final round of the European Tour’s Qualifying School for the past three years.
If you’ve never had your round of golf held up by moose walking across the fairway, then it may be time to experience what the sport is like north of the border. The Canadian Rockies offer some of the most interesting and unique settings for golf in the world. No trip to the Rockies would be complete without a trip to see the Banff Springs Resort Hotel. Now a Fairmont property, the hotel is one of the most spectacular in the world. The area is also the home of the equally memorable Banff Springs Golf Course. The course, which cost over a million dollars when it was built in 1928, is where you’ll get a chance to play one of the sport’s most famous -- and challenging -- holes: The Devil’s Cauldron. It’s a par 3 that has you aiming at a pin that’s 170 yards away and 70 feet below you. Oh, and if you leave it short, it’s in a pond. That hole, alone, will make your golf trip to The Rockies one that you’ll remember forever.
PALM SPRINGS The legendary playground of “The Rat Pack” is also home to some legendary golf courses. The most famous of these are located at PGA West, the site of the Bob Hope Classic. The resort’s six courses -- designed by the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Greg Norman, and Pete Dye -- make this the premier golfing destination on the west coast. But don’t worry if you can’t grab a convenient tee time at PGA West; there are more than 100 other courses to play in the area. And this is some of the most visually dynamic golf you may ever play. Lush greens set against desert brush set against the distant mountains make for some spectacular scenery.
PACIFIC NORTHWEST The Pacific Northwest is more than just the home of Starbucks and Microsoft. It’s also home to some top-shelf golf courses. To get a taste of everything has the region has to offer, head over to Desert Canyon Golf Resort in Orondo, Washington. With the mountains, the desert, and the Columbia River as your backdrop, the resort’s course -which is a regular on just about everyone’s list of “Top 100” courses in the country -- is a treat for the senses. And a treat for your golf game will be the course’s signature 6th hole -- a 679-yard, par 5 monster that features a 150-foot drop in elevation.
LAS VEGAS While Las Vegas is known for its casinos that never close, its ‘round-the-clock nightlife, and its outlandishly over-thetop theme hotels and resorts, it’s rapidly making a name for itself as a golfing destination. And since Vegas is Vegas, even the golf has a celebrity connection. If you want to tackle the same eighteen holes as the pros do, check out TPC Summerlin. The course is the home of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open, which is part of the PGA Tour’s fall series. But just because you’re escaping from The Strip to enjoy some of the country’s finest golf, it doesn’t mean you have to leave the spirit of Las Vegas behind; a friendly wager -- or two -- on the course can make things even more exciting.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC For true island golf that’s literally in this country’s backyard, grab your clubs and some sunscreen and head down to the Dominican Republic. This small island nation has more and more golfers flocking to the Caribbean than ever before. And that’s due to the country’s perfect blend of sun, sand, and the incredible golf that can be played at places like the Roco Ki Golf Club. The club’s Faldo Legacy Course -- the first of three courses that are planned for the property -- offers both breath-taking views and breath-taking golf. The course’s signature 18th hole -- “Los Dos Rezos” or “The Two Prayers” -- has you crossing not one, but two ocean inlets.

DUBAI Dubai’s emergence as a high-end and world-class vacation destination has been well-documented. Its monolithic Burj Al Arab Hotel -- looming like an enormous steel-and-glass sailboat over the Persian Gulf -- has become as much of an international icon as the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building. And where well-heeled travelers flock, golf is sure to follow. Bringing golf to the desert isn’t an easy thing, but the people at Emirates Golf Club seem to have figured out the secret. The Club’s Majlis Course is home to the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic and was recently named as one of the top 100 courses in the world. The club’s sister course, The Faldo, is also considered one of the finest courses in the region.

DREAM
By Bradley Fink Everyone dreams. When I was young I wanted to play in the PGA. I wanted to be like Payne Stewart, a first-class sportsman. But my chip shot was awful, I lacked Payne’s finesse, and my game was over par. Instead I dreamt to be a writer. I would travel, see the world, work for magazines, and make my fortune along the way. Nowadays I dream a bit more lavishly. I want to return to Italy this summer, to swim in the Mediterranean. I want to order swordfish in Montorosso, at a trattoria on the Via Roma. And I want have a nap by the calm, blue water, as I’ll need some time to contemplate my greatest dream of all: To charter a luxury yacht in the Caribbean, and play amazing golf. I have this all planned out. I’ll cruise island to island, course to course, while exploring the allures of the Caribbean. I’ll hit Barbados, St. Vincent, the Virgin Islands, and make a detour in Antigua. I want it to be one of my best vacations yet. I’ll bring the family, my friends, my best set of clubs, and we’ll all hit the sticks in Paradise.
The first thing would be to find the perfect ship. I’ll want something spacious, with several staterooms. I’ll also want jet skis, a Jacuzzi, dive gear, fishing equipment, and plenty of refreshments on board. I’ve already done some research.
The Andreika is a 98-foot motor yacht that charters for around $60,000 per week. It sleeps ten guests in four spacious cabins, with a master cabin and a double bath. This ship is perfect for an intimate cruise. For something with a bit more room to spread out in, I may opt for the 120-foot Sovereign. This yacht sleeps 12 in six staterooms, and offers al-fresco dining, a barbecue, and an updated salon. The Sovereign charters for $70,000 per week and sets off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Once I’ve chosen my yacht I’ll need to sign a charter agreement, which generally requires a 50-percent down payment. The remaining payment will need to be made 30 days before departure. I will also need to pay an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA), which will cover things like food, fuel, marina fees, and anything not included in the charter agreement. Once these expenses have been covered we’ll be on our nautical way. The first stop on our tour will be the shores of the Northern Coastal Valley in Puerto Rico. The scenery in Rio Grande, only 30 minutes from San Juan, is pristine. It’s the reason why Donald Trump chose this location for his 36-hole championship course. At The Trump International Gold Club, there are a thousand acres of Atlantic Ocean waterfront, designed with lakes, waterways, and exotic views of the Caribbean National Forest at El Yunque. After playing, we’ll dine at Trump’s 46,000 square foot clubhouse. The Paradise Bay Grill has ocean-view terraces, where guests can have local lobster tail, red snapper, or fresh catches of the day.
Golf & Country Club. This par-72 course winds through a lush, tropical valley, with uphill and cross-water shots. Built by Laurence Rockefeller in 1966, its design by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. is a true test of skills for any contemporary golfer. For something a little more upscale, we’ll cruise to the Four Seasons on Nevis. This island was once known by the locals as Oualie, which means Land of Beautiful Waters. And with a population of only 11,000, it’s as peaceful as can be. The par-71 course is definitely one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Boasting a course rating of 73.6, and a slope of 132, The Four Seasons’ course will be a welcome challenge. With dramatic views of turquoise-blue water and the neighboring island of St. Kitts, I may want to stay a few extra days and put some work in on my chip shot. In Antigua, only another 50 miles or so away, we’ll stop at the Cedar Valley Golf Club. Opened to the public in 1977, this is Antigua’s only 18-hole championship course. It is a par-70, with more than 6,000 yards of inspiring tropical scenery. The first hole, which sits 400 yards from the back tees, is a high drive to the right, and may be one of the most challenging openers of the trip.

Perhaps the place I’ve dreamed about the most is St. Lucia. The landscape here is known as one of the most romantic in the world. More mountainous than any other Caribbean island, the views in any part of St. Lucia are divine. We’ll find a wealth of nature’s charms at the St. Lucia Golf and Country Club. Surrounded by lush terrain thick with orchids and bromeliads, the course is designed with scenic fairways, and tricky, contoured greens. This par-71 will likely be the highlight of our cruise. But the adventure won’t end there. In Barbados we’ll play at the Sandy Lane Golf Club. This five-star resort and spa is also a self-proclaimed “golfer’s utopia”. With 45 holes on three unique courses, we’ll play on fertile fairways, over rolling hills, across lakes, on white sand, and finish with dinner at Bajan Blue. This beachfront restaurant offers delectable, globally-influenced dishes that range from Wagyu beef to barracuda filet to pumpkin soup. I’m saving the best for our last stop on this dreamy Caribbean tour: Canouan, St. Vincent. This tiny island is the Eden-esque home to the Trump International Golf Club. With sloping hills that fall to the sea, this course is the crème-de-lacrème. Holes 11 through 17 surround Mount Royal (877 ft.), and offer views of the neighboring Grenadines. In 2005, the Robb Report voted this the best golf course in the world. And now, unfortunately, as all things do, this dream must come to an end. But soon I’ll be back in Montorosso for that swim in the Mediterranean. And while I’m there I may take a day trip over to the boats in Monaco. The yacht club there is one of the world’s best, and I might just find the perfect ship for the golf trip of my dreams.

When a pair of favorite sunglasses had somehow gotten misplaced, anarchy was avoided when our morning shuttle driver knocked on our door at 6 pm to return the missing shades. That’s when I knew we had chosen the right place to stay. The Sanctuary also offers plenty for those who want to do more than just golf. You can borrow one of the resort’s bicycles and explore miles of well-marked trails, go for a swim in one of the outdoor pools, play tennis under the lights, or hit the state-ofthe-art gym for a workout. Then, of course, you’ll want to hit The Sanctuary’s spa to soothe those aching muscles. Go for the spa’s “Carolina Cloud Nine.” It’s a 90-minute treatment that features a Mandarin orange, pineapple, and papaya scrub. In addition to massages and body treatments, the spa offers saunas, steam rooms, and a vitality pool.

THREE GIANTS OF THE GAME AND THE VINE The Big Easy With more than 60 professional wins, an active family life, and a full-time commitment to philanthropy, it’s difficult to imagine Ernie Els has time for anything else. But The Big Easy has operated his own portfolio of world-class wines since 2000, lovingly crafted in his home country of South Africa. The Ernie Els Winery has the dual advantages of a location in one of the world’s premiere wine growing regions and the dedication of a talented wine maker. With a handful of awards for outstanding vintages, it’s clear Els’ winning nature transfers from his game to his grapes. Ernie Els wines are produced in the Stellenbosch region, an area known for its temperate Mediterranean climate, and its ability to produce outstanding Bordeaux varietals. Working with Jean Engelbrecht, famed proprietor of the venerable Rust en Vrede Estate, Els produces a classic Bordeaux blend that is consistently ranked among the best in the world.
The love of terroir is evident in each of Els’ wines, and the winery serves to further Els’ mission as unofficial ambassador for South Africa. Hard granite base, clay, and oak leaf soil help these wines showcase the best that the more than four-hundred-year-old Stellenbosch tradition has to offer. The new post-Apartheid generation of South African wines has already made a name for itself on the global stage, but as Ernie Els wines demonstrate very clearly, the world has only begun to experience the richness and depth offered by this unique region www.ernieels.com
The location of the vineyards is ideal for allowing the cool Atlantic air to keep the temperatures down during the summer, giving the grapes a longer ripening period than nearly anywhere in South Africa. This contributes to the deep flavor of the fruit. At just over 15% alcohol, these wines are bold, but the signature ripe cherry and blackberry flavors are as smooth as the man’s swing, making them ideal for enjoying at release, or laying down for twelve to fifteen years.

The King Since his first amateur win in 1953, Arnold Palmer’s name has stood for excellence, both on the green and in the world of business. And since the first grapes were planted at Luna Vineyards in 1995, they have been recognized as being some of the highest-quality estate-grown grapes. The partnership between the golfing legend and the grapes of the Luna Vineyards has resulted in the private label Arnold Palmer Wines. Consistent and bold, these wines embody the same confidence and boisterousness that has made Palmer a household name for more than six decades. Palmer is a long-time lover of wine, with a cellar boasting selections from around the world – including an understandably deep collection of Château Palmer, from the eponymous ancient Bordeaux winery. He first became involved in Napa wine country in the mid-1980s, befriending Mike Moone, then president of Beringer. When Moone started Luna in 1995, Palmer quickly came on board as an investor, and in 2002 the two began discussing a signature brand.
Since his first vintage in 2003, Palmer has created price-conscious wines built to be enjoyed with a meal or sipped alone. The Arnold Palmer Chardonnay is done in the classic Napa style, with toasted oak, citrus, pear, and marshmallow. Although more sophisticated than his signature iced-tea and lemonade, the well-balanced acid makes his chardonnay an ideal wine to enjoy on a hot day. The Cabernet Sauvignon is also in a classic style, with plum, cherry, and chocolate dominating the palate. The Reserve Cabernet has more intricate bramble fruit and a loaminess that adds to its complexity, and its firm tannic structure makes it well-suited for aging. . Although not as hands-on as some celebrity winery owners, Palmer’s love of the vine is evident in the quality of these wines, and his position as the People’s King is well served by the excellent price-to-quality ratio in each of his wines. The outlook of Palmer wines is sunny, with talk lately of a possible expansion into Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, and some of Luna’s other trademark varietals. www.arnoldpalmerwines.com

The Great White Shark Greg Norman may not have had quite as impressive a career on the golf course as Palmer, but The Shark has outdueled The King in the wine cellar. In the mid-1970s, while touring France and America, Norman was first immersed in the world of fine wine, and was instantly hooked. By the mid-1990s, that passion had turned into something of an obsession, and he paired up with Chris Hatcher of Beringer Blass to create his own wines. Just over a decade later Greg Norman has become a well-respected name in wine, with estates in both California and Australia that showcase a wide range of varietals. Throughout his career in wine Norman has aimed for exceptional quality that reflects the strengths of the region. Every vintage of his Shiraz Reserve, which debuted in 1998, has consistently scored a 91 or higher in the Wine Spectator, and his non-reserve wines are equally respected. Although not a winemaker, Norman is involved in each and every step of the process -- from dictating the style which will define the wines, to tasting the barrels, to the marketing campaigns that help them find homes. His philosophy of wine is egalitarian and sensible: wine should be accessible, delicious, and compatible with a variety of dishes. Norman insists he is no connoisseur. Having sampled countless of the best wines in the world over the years, however, he knows what he likes. And his wines embody a populist style: soft and full, with ripe fruit, unobtrusive tannins, and crisp acid. In California, his Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc come from the North Coast, his Zinfandel from Lake County, his Syrah from Camatta Hills, his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara, and his Petite Sirah from Paso Robles. In Australia, the Limestone Coast produces all the Shiraz, while the Chardonnay hails from Eden Valley and his Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra Reserve. This wide selection of source regions allows him to choose grapes that meet his exacting standards, leading to wines that continue to improve year after year. www.gregnormanestateswine.com

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR GOLF
66
G
FOR
THE
MODERN
GOLFER
GWMAGTV.COM
What also makes yoga so rewarding is the sense of satisfaction that comes as you progress. Initially, a basic pose like the Triangle may seem frustrating. With legs spread wide and with one foot facing forward and the other turned outward ninety-degrees, you have to slowly fold at the hips enough to reach down and touch your foot with one hand, while the other hand reaches for the ceiling. It’s a posture that will show you exactly where you may have issues -- shoulder-wise, rotation-wise, and hip-wise -that are negatively affecting your golf game. Through continued practice, though, soon you’ll find the posture getting easier and more comfortable. Even more exciting is how this additional strength and range of motion that you’re adding to your body will make your golf swing seem easier and more comfortable.
THE BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR GOLF
A lot of golfers are of the mind-set that the only way that they can work on their game is to put in their time on the course, the driving range, or the putting green. Sure, practice will improve your game, but only to a point. What most golfers fail to realize is that their most important piece of equipment isn’t that new $400 driver, it’s their own body. And, surprisingly, the best way to keep this piece of equipment optimally tuned for golf doesn’t involve a roomful of fancy and cutting-edge fitness machines; it involves the ancient art of yoga. The way you swing a club is limited by the way your body can move. If your shoulders and chest are tight from spending 40plus hours sitting at a desk, there’s no way you’ll be able to have the range of motion that’s required for a sufficient backswing and follow-through. If the muscles that operate around the spine aren’t strong enough or are too tight, your ability to rotate your upper body will be limited and you won’t be able to generate either speed or power at impact. If your hips are overly tight -which is the case with most people...even athletes -- your swing will end up being performed using just your arms. Ideally, the golf swing is a full-body movement. Using just the arms to perform it and expecting power and distance would be like expecting race car performance while driving your car in first gear.
Yoga may even help you on the course in ways that have nothing to do with flexibility, body awareness, and strength. The relaxation and breathing techniques that are taught in many yoga styles may be just the things that let you stay calm and composed enough to sink that winning twelve-foot putt on the eighteenth. Traditional Eastern yoga styles will have a little more emphasis on the meditative mind-body aspect of the practice, while most Western styles tend to focus a little more on the purely physical side of things. Regardless of the ratio of exercise to meditation that you’re looking for, though, if you look around, you should be able to find a style that’s a good fit for you. You don’t need a mystical third-eye to see the benefits that regular yoga practice can have on many facets of your golf game. Pigeon Poses and Crow Poses will lead to more birdies and an initially challenging Downward Dog will help you deal with even the most challenging of dogleg rights.
Unlike traditional strength training workouts that may actually sabotage your golf game by creating unnecessary tightness in muscles that need to be strong, yet loose, yoga develops flexibility as it develops strength. The movements in yoga -- as in golf -- are generally full-body movements. This develops neurological connections between body parts that lead to greater coordination and body awareness. The golf swing involves just about every major and minor muscle group in the body. And it requires split-second interactions between these muscles. Yoga ties the movements of the muscles together and improves your ability to control how the muscles of your body interact with each other

“Those who have tempered themselves are not afraid of encountering tigers”. - Lao Tse, Tao Te Ching The great Tom Watson once said “When I learned how to breathe, I learned how to win”, and many golfers struggle with this fundamental skill, which means they are prey to the emotional highs and lows of the game, simply because they don’t stay focused on their breathing and therefore let mental interference ruin their chances of success. In this article we’re going to take a look at the ancient art of Chi Kung – literally translated as breath or energy work – and how it can help improve your game. What’s this got to do with golf? Well, I’m sure many of you have read about the benefits of correct breathing and you may even have touched on it at some brain-training seminars, or when reading books about the “inner game”, but the simple truth is, unless you actually practise the discipline on a regular basis, you will never gain the many benefits it can bring to your golf and life. Yet, if you can incorporate into your weekly schedule, this basic Chi Kung exercise, which is thousands of years old, will help you develop a greater awareness of your mental state fear, anticipation, anger, excitement – (all of which are being experienced on golf courses around the world right now!) and you’ll have the tools to take yourself back to a more neutral and relaxed state, simple by focusing on your breathing.
Clients who’ve made a commitment to this simple practise have reported many benefits, including feeling more relaxed, recovering more quickly from poor shots, staying calm while on the way to winning a first club medal, better eye to the target, an absence of swing thoughts, better powers of visualisation and so on. How can you incorporate it into your game? Once you can comfortably stand for 20 minutes – and make no mistake, this may take you several weeks to master, as at first 5 minutes will seem like a lifetime! – you will start to gain greater awareness of your mind and body and can incorporate the learning into the following swing drill. Chi Kung Swing Stand at address and focus your mind on your T’an Tien – (your body’s natural centre of gravity, located approximately 2” below the navel). Take a few moments to relax and centre yourself as you breathe. Keep your shoulders down, keep your chest empty and relax your jaw. Breathe in while you move to the top of your back-swing, and then exhale all the way through to your finish position. Focus entirely on your breathing and trust your swing. Try this drill 6 times “empty-handed” (without holding a club) and then try it with your favourite club and/or driver, but without striking a ball. Note your feedback on a scale of 1 – 10. 1 = poor, 10 = excellent. Score in the following way for each drill:
Chi Kung – The Practise of Standing Meditation Stand in a natural posture, your feet shoulder-width wide, toes pointing outwards very slightly, your knees soft, your arms hanging loose at your sides and your head as if gently suspended from above. Allow your eyes to gaze gently, one mile into the distance and relax your chest, but without slouching or allowing your shoulders to roll forward.
#1 How focused were you on your breathing, did you manage to empty your mind of all other swing thoughts?
Now, place your attention in your lower abdomen, just below the navel, at a point called the T’an Tien. Allow yourself to focus quietly on your breathing, silently repeating “I am breathing in – I am breathing out” while you inhale and exhale. Gently soften and relax more as you stand with quiet awareness on your breathing and try to maintain a calm and steady focus on your centre-point.
Now step up to the ball and hit some great shots, while staying completely focused on your breathing. Relax and enjoy!
Sounds simple, right? Well, the challenge is to hold the posture and maintain awareness of your breathing for at least 20 minutes and then repeat the exercise 3 times per week.
#2 How relaxed did you feel during your swing? #3 Did you notice a greater feeling of stability throughout your swing?
Next issue we’ll look at the chi-power GOLF principle of ‘Stillness in Motion’ and how you can use it to enhance stability in your shot-making.

MORE POWER -WITH A TWIST JOEY DIOVISALVI & STEVE STEINBERG Two quick-and-easy ways to add distance to your game. THE PROBLEM: Not enough rotation in your swing. If you’re not able to rotate your upper body sufficiently in both directions, your game will suffer in more ways than one. If you’re a right-handed player, lack of rotation to the right side means that your backswing isn’t as deep as it could be. The less of a backswing you take, the less speed and momentum you’ll be able to create through your downswing and into impact. Less clubhead speed at impact means less power and less distance. A lack of rotation to the left side means that your follow-through isn’t as deep as it could be. This means you’ll be forced to decelerate -- or slow down -- your swing prematurely in order to maintain your balance after impact. Again, less speed at impact means less distance. When you put these two things together, if you have a lack of rotation to the right and to the left, it essentially means that you’ll be throwing the emergency brakes on an already weakened swing. Ouch.
THE SOLUTION: A two-pronged approach to increasing range of motion with your upper body. Lack of rotation could be the result of two things. The muscles that are needed to rotate the upper body at the spine -- deep-seated core and back muscles and muscles in the back of the shoulder -- may be weak. On the flip side, the muscles that need to be loose enough to allow this rotation -- chest muscles and muscles in the front of the shoulder -- may be too tight. What you get, as a result, is a situation where your body is basically playing tug-ofwar with itself. To get the most out of your swing, you need to strengthen what needs to be strong and loosen what needs to be loose in order to achieve optimal rotation. Exercise One: To loosen the muscles in the chest and across the shoulders, grab the end of a resistance band in each hand -- I like to use the GolfGym PowerSwing Trainer bands that I developed -- and loop it in back of you across your back and shoulders. You want it to be pretty tight across your back, so you might have to “choke up” on the band by grabbing it by the actual band -- and not the handle. Straighten your arms and come into your address position with proper posture and spine angle.

Without losing your posture, let the tension of the band pull your right arm back and up towards the ceiling. Try not to bend either arm during the movement. At the top of the movement, your two arms should almost be forming a straight line. You should also be feeling a pull across your chest and into your shoulders. That’s the feeling of those muscles beginning to loosen. Hold this position for a five-count.
Slowly return to the starting position and repeat the motion with the left arm. Again, hold for a five-count. Keep alternating arms until you’ve done five of these chest-opening stretches on each side. You may find that one side is tighter than the other. That’s perfectly natural. The goal, though, is to increase the range of motion as much as possible on both sides.
EXERCISE TWO: Exercise Two: To strengthen the muscle in the core, back, and shoulders that are responsible for creating rotation, anchor the ends of two resistance bands at floor level. (You can loop them around the leg of a heavy piece of furniture, for example.) Here, I like to use my doublebanded GolfGym PowerBandz. Grab the other ends -- one in each hand -- and assume your golf posture with a proper spine angle. There should already be some tension in the bands. Without losing your posture or spine angle and without buckling in at the knee, rotate your upper body by swinging your right arm out and in back of you. Avoid bending your arm during the motion. Ideally, at the top of the movement, your two arms will be forming a straight line. Hold for a two-count. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat with the left arm. Continue alternating arms until you’ve done five of these strengthening moves on each side. Again, one side may initially feel stronger than the other. That’s fine. The eventual goal is to create as much strength as possible and reduce any imbalances between your right and left sides.
One of the highlights of Joey Diovisalvi’s ten years on the PGA Tour as a biomechanics coach was helping Vijay Singh become the world’s number-one golfer in 2004. Coach Joey D now works with touring pros -- and those who are serious about their game -- at his D1 Athletic Facility in Jupiter, Florida. His biomechanical approach to golf fitness has worked with everyone from PGA Tour event winners Pat Perez, and Ryuji Imada to Champion’s Tour greats Tom Pernice, Jr. and Tommy Armour III. animated cities and sweeping natural landscapes, Australia has all the makings of a distinctly unique holiday destination. And this holds true whether or not you’re up for tee! By Bobby Harris Australia is the sixth largest nation in the world and the only country to govern an entire continent. Encompassing approximately the same size as that of the 48 mainland United States, it ironically has the lowest population density in the world: only two people per square kilometer. Don’t let the low population fool you into thinking there’s not a lot to do here, because Australia offers exquisite sightseeing and no shortage of activities to keep you busy. Oh, and it also offers world-class golf. Australia conjures up a kaleidoscope of images. And the Great Barrier Reef is definitely one of them. This spectacular site is the world’s largest reef system, stretching for over 344,400 square kilometers. The Great Barrier Reef is massive enough to be identified from outer space. If you prefer to stay dry while you see the sights, hop over to the island state of Tasmania, some 240 kilometers off the southern Australian coast. An archipelago of over 300 islands, it offers a treasure trove of national parks and nature preserves. For a more urban view of the country, Sydney -- on the east coast -- sports a lively arts and culture scene. It’s Opera House in internationally renowned. Further south, Melbourne also offers everything from quality dining to luxury shopping
Barnbougle Dunes Located on Tasmania’s northeast coast, Barnbougle Dunes showcases the island state’s extraordinary natural beauty. This course is set against a stunning backdrop of lush sweeping coastlines. Barnbougle Dunes mirrors the charms of coastal courses in Scotland and Ireland, but the landscape here has an Aussie charm all of its own. The Dunes has been voted top public golf course in the country and the seventh best in the world. on the planet. www.barnbougledunes.com.au
Joondalup Resort Luxurious accommodations, fine dining with panoramic views, and Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf is what you’ll find at Joondalup Resort. Just north of Perth -- on the country’s west coast -- The resort has established itself as a must-stay destination. Relax on the white sand beaches of the Sunset Coast situated just a stone’s throw away, challenge your golf game on an invigorating course where the landscape varies dramatically from luxuriant bushlands to daunting limestone quarries, and keep an eye out for the kangaroos freely roaming the wild floral setting. v www.joondalupresort.com.au
Just as Australia is a study in contrasts, so too are its golf courses. Australia is blessed with some of the most beautiful courses around, which makes it a prime destination for golfers from all over the world. Here are just four of the reasons why Australia figures so prominently on the golf map.

It was Australian Golf Digest Magazine’s choice for top course in 2008 and continues to remain in the top ten. The golf course is set against a backdrop of ocean-front dunes and stunning views of the coast and offers eighteen challenging holes of James Wilcher-design.
Hamilton Island Golf Club sits serenely at the very edge of the Great Barrier Reef and, as a result, offers unparalleled ocean views. Located on Dent Island -- off the northeast coast of the country -- the golf course at Hamilton Island is the only championship island golf course in Australia. Don’t let that intimidate you though. Hamilton Island was designed to cater to golfers of all levels -- from beginners to pros. HACIENDA CABO SAN LUCAS There are few cities in the world as vibrant as Cabo San Lucas. Located at the far southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, this is one of the premier locations in the world due to a combination of perfect white beaches, phenomenal scuba diving opportunities, and the distinctive sea arch known as El Arco de Cabo San Lucas. While these features alone render the area a blissfully perfect coastal region, there is also the Las Cabos Corridor to consider. It’s the only high-end holiday destination of its kind in the world. With dozens of resorts and golf courses lining the thirty kilometers of coastline that make up the Corridor, there isn’t a better place on the planet for just sitting on the beach, enjoying the world-class sport fishing, or -- more importantly -- golfing with the spray of the sea on your face and the sun on your back.
