t is time to visit Curaçao. The small Caribbean island is one of the hottest vacation destinations on the planet. This island is east of Aruba and north of Venezuela. It is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and was once part of the Netherland Antilles. Over 150,000 people live on the island which measures 171 square miles. The capital city, Willemstad, is home to the Hato International Airport so travelers from North and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean can easily access this oasis and its colorful culture.
VIBRANT ECONOMY INCLUDES MORE THAN TOURISM Even though Curaçao is a small island, it is filled with a vibrant culture and history. The island thrives on a variety of industries including tourism, trade, and the refining and storing of oil. The island offers a high standard of living, due in large part to the government’s dedication to bringing businesses and foreign investments into the country. There is even talk of a spaceport being built on the island so tourists can vacation on a suborbital flight. For those who prefer to stay on Earth, the island’s geography is perfect for off-shore scuba diving, snorkeling, and boating.
GET TO KNOW THE ABC ISLANDS As a member of a tiny group called the ABC Islands, Curaçao is in good company. Aruba is the best known of the three islands, with over one million annual visitors arriving from North America, Venezuela, and cruise ships. Aruba is known for luxurious resorts, top notch casinos, and glamorous beaches. The “B” island is Bonaire, which is known for scuba diving and its natural environment. When visitors aren’t diving they can hike, swim, and birdwatch. This island is known for the Washington-Slagbaai National Park rather than glitzy resorts and shopping. The “C” island, Curaçao, offers the best of both worlds. The capital city of Willemstad offers busy shopping and outstanding restaurants; but once visitors leave the capital, they immediately notice the natural beauty of the island. All three islands are top notch choices for a perfect Caribbean vacation.

SATURDAY After a full day of suite-hopping at the Hammock tradeshow I was ready to fall in love on a night-long date with fashion, starting with the girls at Gottex that were literally glowing as designer Karen Gasner sent stunningly beautiful prints down the runway in true Gottex style.
Defining opulence, Mara Hoffman’s highly anticipated presentation at Casa Casuarina followed with the most immaculate display of destinationwear from the week, for those lucky enough to be invited. Signature bold prints, flowing caftans, and alluring models in headscarves were shining in the backdrop of tiles of the former Versace mansion pool.
Next, making their swimwear debut, Maxim decided to expand outside of the magazine business and launch a swim collection that is pleasantly more girl-next-door than centerfold. And ending the night were barefoot babes walking the runway in the W South Beach Hotel pool at Frankie’s Bikinis lead by 20-year old designer Francesca Aiello. Designers of Acacia, Naomi Newirth and Lyndie Irons SUNDAY At the Cabana tradeshow it was all about the coconuts, and exciting new luxury designer swimwear collections from the likes of Bec & Bridge to Lisa Marie Fernandez. Swim Show was flawlessly executed again as buyers shopped labels old and new at the Convention Center. In the afternoon I popped into the ultra-chic Harper’s Bazaar pop-up shop at the Soho Beach House, featuring the most fashionable beachwear. And when the sun went down, Maaji put on a maj-or show with models that looked like they were all going glamping. Afterwards, the designers of Acacia walked their dog down the runway in a custom-pup Acacia piece at the end of their rap music-meets-traditional Hawaiian swimwear display.
Finally, Indah ended it all on a bad-ass note that any rockstar would appreciate. Sequins, fur coats, and leather boots may not prove to be very swim-able, but they made for a great final Swim Week fashion show. As for emerging trends next year, start working on the booty, you’re going to need it to fit into all of the Brazilian bikini bottoms. If modest is more your style, I am happy to say that one-pieces are here to stay. And, get to know the halter style, it topped everything. For the fashion industries’ sexiest event of the year, Swim Week proved yet again that Miami is the hottest place to be in July.
