WASH Capability Statement United Purpose (UP) – Our role in the Nigerian WASH sector First in Nigeria to succeed in achieving Local Government Area (LGA)-wide Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
We successfully work with the corporate world, realizing shared goals around improved water, sanitation and hygiene.
Learning and sharing our innovations is at the centre of everything we do. United Purpose’s WASH programmes identify best practices, pilot innovations, and scale up successful methodologies.
We take a holistic approach, integrating WASH with other initiatives. We promote inclusive service provision and interventions, ensuring participation of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.
Government partner, supporting all three tiers of Government to bring Nigeria on track to end to open defecation by 2025 and achieving full Water, Sanitation and Hygiene coverage by 2030.
We recognize success can only be achieved together. We build capacity and develop and support platforms for closer coordination – including the Inter-Ministerial Meetings on Sanitation.
Sanitation comes first. At United Purpose, we believe that Behaviour Change is key to improved health. We support communities to prioritize and improve their sanitation and hygiene status, using the Community-led Total Sanitation approach. Our way of implementing CLTS is: ‘Community Problem, Community Solution’ – supporting communities to find their own solutions that work.

Promoting Healthy Hygiene Behaviours. We are champions of Creative Behaviour Change Communication. We work with Nigeria’s top entertainers to facilitate one of the world’s largest Global Handwashing Day campaigns, and leverage on the power of music and dance during our Sanitation Carnivals.
Sustainable Water Interventions. We maximize health gains for communities that have successfully ended open defecation and improved their hygiene behaviours, by providing safe water. Even more importantly, we build capacity to ensure communities will continue to enjoy the benefits of safe water in the long term
Our WASH Programmes Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Nigeria (RUSHPIN). This ground-breaking WSSCC-funded and government-owned initiative transforms the health of 1.2 million people in in Cross River and Benue states. The programme, using the demand-driven Community-Led Total Sanitation approach, operationalizes a sector-wide approach for replication. Community-Led Health Improvement through Hygiene and Sanitation in Nigeria (CHISHPIN). Impressed with RUSHPIN’s innovative design, UKAid is funding a three-year ‘sister’ programme. CHISHPIN scales up RUSHPIN – a remarkable example of synergistic opportunities and model replicability. The programme increases sanitation coverage for 774,000 people. Safe Water and Improved Sanitation & Hygiene (SWISH). The SWISH initiative provides communities with potable water, which have achieved sustainably improved sanitation behaviour and hygiene practices. Future interventions will provide safe water to rural communities, and in public and urban spaces, while underscoring gender and the considerations of disabled people. Global Handwashing Day campaigns. In partnership with PZ Cussons, United Purpose facilitates Nigeria’s largest Global Handwashing Day campaign. During the campaign, thousands of school children are empowered as ‘Hygiene Heroes’, and millions of people are reached with life-saving hygiene messages through strategic and interactive (social) media campaigns.
