As early Islam developed, so too did a keen interest in astronomy. The ability to read the patterns of the moon and stars was particularly valued as it aided in the calculation of prayer times. Early Islamic metal workers produced specialised objects such as the astrolabe. An elaborate inclinmetre tool, it was used to measure angles for navigation and astronomy. Calligraphic engravings on the bronze are an enduring symbol of faith. It is one of many fascinating pieces at Miraj Islamic Art Centre. A defining moment of extravagance and splendour, the 1920s brought not only a renewed prosperity but the iconic Art Deco movement. Popular during the post-First World War economic boom, Art Deco embodied the very essence of an era marked by an insatiable appetite for luxury and a raft of technological innovations. It was a time when towering skyscrapers dominated cityscapes and lavish lifestyles were enjoyed. Leading ladies of stage and screen attended exclusive parties at chic cocktail bars where the new jazz music was played. Art Deco’s influence was felt in restaurants, theatres and lounges in this ‘decorative art’ style while elaborately designed cinemas were temples to the glamour of Hollywood. Ostentatious cruise liners that set sail for foreign climes became symbolic of the Art Deco movement’s luxury appeal. Its grand designs were to influence a host of creative arts for years to come. Great icons of the mechanical modern age were also incorporated into the motifs of Art Deco. Advances in aviation, rail, ocean transport, electric lighting and architecture were all represented, characterised by stepped patterns, sunburst shapes, geometric angles and sweeping curves. Art Deco references were soon seen everywhere from film to architecture, fine art, furniture, photography and interiors. Absolute luxury was the movement’s guiding principle accompanied by the application of the finest design techniques. Nowhere was this embodied more than in the glittering jewels adorning the beautiful women of the day. Haute horology in particular took the style to its heart and the result was a stunning selection of timepieces in sleek shapes incorporating shimmering diamonds. The advent of the Second World War marked a decline in the Art Deco movement which was increasingly seen as overly lavish in a time of austerity. However the 1960s saw something of a revival in the genre and now in 2013 the world’s finest watch houses are presenting beautiful examples of Art Deco-style timepieces as the movement enjoys a renaissance. The Tank watch is undoubtedly one of the most famed creations from luxury Parisian watchmaker Cartier. Chaumet Joséphine Watch From its beginnings in 1780, French jewellery house Chaumet has been at the forefront of master craftsmanship creating stunning pieces for society’s elite. Its founder Marie-Étienne Nitot became the official jeweller to Napoleon Bonaparte and his new wife Joséphine. This collection is a tribute to Joséphine and the elaborately designed tiaras Napoleon bestowed upon her, but it also draws on influences from the haute jeweller’s Art Deco past. In 1928 Marcel Chaumet took over his father’s work as the Art Deco movement reached its zenith in France. The House of Chaumet submitted a selection of pieces to the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, a show regarded as the pinnacle of the Art Deco movement. Bringing these influences into current collections, the Chaumet Joséphine Watch boasts geometric shapes and angular Art Deco lines. A teardrop face is surrounded by pavé diamonds stretching in gold lace detailing from the classic mother-of-pearl dial which is encased in sapphire crystal glass. Peter Carl Fabergé, born in 1846, was apprenticed as a boy to his goldsmith father. He continued his goldsmith studies in Paris, Germany and England before returning to Russia where he joined the family business, eventually taking over when his father stepped down. Extraordinary detail and an enchanting colour palette became hallmarks of Peter Carl Fabergé’s craft and he soon caught the attention of the Russian Imperial Court. “Fabergé was a jeweller that, not only created these extraordinary objects, but became at the time of the imperial courts and the turn of the century a jeweller known for social gifting. Fabergé was the gift ‘du jour’. If you were given a piece of Fabergé, whether that was a cigarette case or an egg pendant you knew you were part of a set who appreciated it. It was very much a status symbol. Nicholas II gifted Fabergé pieces to the prima ballerinas of the imperial ballet. We have to understand that it was a time where all of Russia’s culture – literature, ballet, music, art – came together and rang in the new century,” says Flohr. “Today, pieces come up at auction and you find you might be holding a cigarette case that belonged to a member of the imperial family. We’ve also come across things like albums; one was compiled by the sister of Nicholas II. She had it hand-painted to commemorate the Fabergé eggs she had been given over several years. There, we found out the eggs weren’t just given at Easter but at birthdays, celebrations or just as treats,” adds Flohr.

The opulence of the Russian royalty came crashing down in 1917 when the Russian Revolution brought about the end of the Romanov dynasty and with it, the House of Fabergé. The Bolsheviks seized the Fabergé workshops and their treasures, all production was closed down and Peter Carl Fabergé and his family fled Russia on the last diplomatic train bound for Riga, Latvia, living out his days in Switzerland. In a legal settlement in 1951, the Fabergé family lost the right to produce and market designs under the Fabergé name. It wasn’t until 2007 that the family was reconnected with the iconic title. Tatiana Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé, both great-granddaughters of Peter Carl Fabergé, became founding members of the Fabergé Heritage Council which offers advice to the new company. Fabergé was then relaunched in September

2009 with three Les Fabuleuses de Fabergé High Jewellery Collections – Les Fleurs, Les Fables and Les Fauves de Fabergé. Two years later, two egg pendants and a dozen high-jewellery eggs became the first eggs to have been made by Fabergé since 1917. Flohr explains: “When we started with Fabergé, it came attached with 13 licences for everything from ties to sunglasses. The most important thing was to clean the Fabergé name and terminate those licences because we wanted to bring Fabergé back as a jeweller known for extraordinary items. “Fabergé was the greatest jewellery house of all time. How do you take this icon and move it into the next millennium? We wanted to imagine what Peter Carl would be doing if he was alive today. Rather than going back and just copying design elements literally, we wanted to translate

them. I have a wonderful young Russian head of design that has an art and jewellery background. He was educated in Russia and at London’s Central St Martin’s College, so he has the mix of both worlds. He understands both traditional Russian lifestyles and what makes Fabergé cool today,” says Flohr, who is also a former Russian Vogue editor. One challenge facing Flohr and her team has been that much of the original Fabergé pieces were lost in the decades following the Russian Revolution. “What is left are the gifts. Very little of the jewellery is still around as the gems were taken out, disassembled and sold off. We were able to create one hero piece, the

Celebrating the roses treasured by Catherine the Great, it is crafted in white gold, silver and platinum. The egg was engraved and then enamelled with

Owning an antique brings a special sense of joy. Items from another era are cherished possessions which often evoke an emotional response not just because of an aesthetic appeal but as a result of a connection to people and moments from the past. Full of character and a singular craftsmanship that cannot be replicated, the pleasure in collecting antiques comes from tracking down the truly exclusive. An antique is generally considered to be an item which is at least 100 years old. Often the starting period is prior to 1830 as this marked the beginning of mass production in most parts of the world. Many genres fall into the antiques category from fine art and sculpture to furniture, jewellery and books. Among classifications in which antiques are sold, exhibited and collected the most common is by country of origin. European antiques are still among the most sought after while Chinese pieces such as ceramics from the Ming Dynasty fetch many thousands. Antiques are also collected according to type. “We have many rare items within the collection. One such example is a bronze sculpture entitled Gloria Victis by Antonin Mercié. The piece is a historical reference of the Franco-Prussian war and depicts an allegorical female representing fame (or hope), carrying a dying French solider to glory. His broken sword is a symbol of defeat. Versions of Mercié’s Gloria Victis can be seen in The National Gallery in Washington D.C. and in Bordeaux. “We also have a painting by FrançoisAntoine Bossuet which depicts an architectural view in the orientalist style. Bossuet was a product of the Belgian School and travelled throughout the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, and North Africa where he recorded scenes of town life, castles and ancient architectural ruins. The piece in our collection is an exceptional example of the artist’s skilled use of perspective and light,” says Javaheri. He continues: “19th Century Antiques is more than merely a new shopping destination, rather it is a place to develop a good eye and personal taste, enriching existing collections as well as cultivating new collectors. “A visitor to our store will be treated to a viewing of a selection of antiques which are well displayed amongst our collection of art and prints. We stock mainly antique chests which were once used as storage as well as tribal doors bearing beautiful patterns and textures, silver jewellery and khanjars which are ornate daggers from Oman. We also have a small selection of antique maps of the region. The antique chests range in price from AED4,000 to AED30,000 depending on the size, type and age. One of the rarest pieces I have ever stocked was an antique door from Oman with detailed Islamic carvings and the family name engraved in the timber,” explains Harvey. “I can tell an antique by the type of wood, the way the panels are joined and the type of hardware used. For example, silver is assessed by the quality and amount of wear visible on the piece. I explain clearly to a potential buyer how to differentiate between one of my originals and the fakes. I also talk them through the process of purchase to shipping which we will handle for them. We have quite a few very high-profile clients, mainly from the US and Europe. “I am hoping the local population will begin to collect also whilst there are still pieces available to buy. The fact is that many pieces have been shipped abroad and I would like to see some remain here for future generations, museums and private collections,” adds Harvey.

In recent years, there has been a move towards incorporating anti-magnetism into designs to maximise performance. The Breguet Classique Chronométrie 7727 is the result of that vision. The watch, in rose or white gold, is fitted with the new hand-wound Calibre 574DR, the latest development from the Breguet workshops that delivers impressive results. Its major innovation is the magnetic pivots which counter the negative effects of

magnetism. The watch is fitted with a double balance spring in specially prepared silicon to protect against magnetic fields for optimum precision. Breguet’s watchmakers have also used two micro-magnets to ensure the balance staff, which supports the watch mechanism’s balance wheel, remains stable. The result is a balance that is insensitive to gravity, more stable and resistant to shocks. In the classic Breguet style, the water-resistant case is presented in 18-carat rose gold, while the dial is defined by decorative ‘Geneva waves’ in the centre. The principles which underpin Islamic art are sewn into the very fabric of societies in this region and far beyond. As Islam expanded, from around the seventh century, the art form which accompanied it crossed a host of borders from Spain to China. Covering a time frame of around 1,300 years, countries most often represented are the central Asian republics, the Middle East, Turkey, Syria, Iran, the Indian sub-continent, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt and Africa. The incredibly varied art produced during this time was created for a Muslim population, although it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily defined by religious themes. While calligraphy was used to illustrate the Qurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;an and decorative glasswork adorned mosque lamps, a great deal of examples of the style can be found in everyday objects such as pottery, carpets, textiles and tiling.

Bold hues, strong shapes and intricate designs are some of the distinctive characteristics of Islamic art. Recurring motifs focus on vegetal and geometric themes which, when repeated, are characteristic of the Arabesque style. The vegetal motifs often showed trees and flowering plants as lush gardens represented different notions of paradise. This celebration of nature and, by extension, the work of God is also demonstrated in scalloped designs and curling vines seen in woven carpets and ceramic tiles. Geometric shapes also feature greatly in examples of the art form. As Islamic cultures developed, so too did the study of mathematics and geometry to gain a greater appreciation of God’s creations in nature. The proportion and symmetry of calligraphy shows the influence of geometry on Islamic art

which purports principles of balance and order. There is also a focus throughout on abstract and natural motifs rather than human figures to ensure a celebration of God rather than man. “Islamic art generally comprises stylised lines and designs in highly disciplined forms. It is often woven or inlaid on precious materials that are both decorative as well as useful, yet it always celebrates God’s creation. Islamic art is a broad term used to define art from countries where Islam has flourished over the centuries. The UAE has become a focal point for visitors and it is important that they understand the rich and varied facets of Islamic culture,” says Manzoor Kachroo sales director at Miraj Islamic Art Centre, Dubai, which houses an impressive collection of Islamic art pieces both exhibited and for sale.

“Besides being a museum and gallery, Miraj is also a learning centre. Here you will find children from various Dubai schools learning about art. The centre was set up primarily to showcase art from Islamicinfluenced cultures and countries. It also supports present-day artists and craftsmen who need patronage to sustain their artistic endeavours. In ancient times, this patronage came from the rulers and the royal courts. This explains why the media used is quite often precious materials such as gold, silver, gems, silk, marble and semi-precious stones. “The centre is proud of its role in educating people from all over the world about Islamic heritage and its culture. From painting and ceramics to metalwork and glass decoration, each genre within Islamic art boasts its own defining characteristics for visitors to Dubai to explore,” says Kachroo.

Painting

Within Islamic art, paintings were defined mostly by miniature hand-painted scenes to illustrate the Qurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;an. These intricate works used bold colours such as gold and red to lend a rich and vibrant feel to the important pages. Some of the first miniature paintings date back to 13th century Persia which, in turn, influenced Turkish miniature artworks and later versions in India. As these paintings were often created specifically for use in the private spaces of the Islamic court, scenes depicted were less restricted and showed human figures in the realist style with animals and in gardens. These incredibly detailed paintings were finely drawn, for a beautifully intricate effect.

Woven rugs and carpets The pile carpet or rug is perhaps one of the most iconic examples of Islamic art and is still very prolific today. The earliest examples often feature geometric designs as the straight edges were easily produced by weavers. It is rare to find carpets from before the 16th century, although some Egyptian rugs have survived. Depictions of animals and geometric lines were the most common at first followed by flowing loops and curves of Arabesque vegetal styles. Production of the

Persian carpet reached its peak in the 16 th and 17th centuries while outside the Middle East, rugs were also made in central India, Spain and the Balkans. Multiple uses were adopted across the decades as carpets served as f loor coverings and art adorning walls. Within Middle Eastern societies, carpet weaving is a rich tradition. Rural communities and Bedouin camps keep a culture of weaving alive.

Calligraphy

Arabic Script Calligraphy, more commonly known as Islamic Calligraphy, encompasses all works by Muslim practitioners from Morocco to China. Beautiful examples of this special script can be seen throughout t he UA E , par ticularly on mosque ceilings and in interior design. Traditionally, Islamic Calligraphy is drawn using a carved reed pen and there are around 20 different types, though not all are still in regular use. The three main styles are Kufic, Naskh and Thuluth. Kufic is a geometric style characterised by horizontal, sharp lines. It was originally developed for writing on stone and in early religious texts, but has now all but disappeared. Naskh is a more cursive calligraphy that appeared in the 10th century and replaced geometric variants as it was easier to read and write. The third style is Thuluth where one-third of each letter slopes. Large and elegant, Thuluth was used in medieval times in mosque decorations and is still in use today.

Ceramics Islamic potters brought a new expertise to ceramic design with a special type of glazing that was applied to surfaces. Tinglazed pottery dates back to 750CE in Iraq and spread to Egypt, Syria and Spain. The tin glaze lent an opaque effect to ceramics and was applied to pottery, wall tiles and plates. Often a glaze was applied to pieces painted with bold colours, most commonly blue. Another influence on Islamic ceramics came from Chinese design believed to originate from invasions of Mongols and a general appreciation for Chinese accomplishments. distinctive in their geometric patterns and vibrant colours. Tiles, each in a different single colour, were cut to shape and then inlaid to create abstract patterns while in later examples, three-dimensional relief elements such as lettering, were added.

Glass Mosque lamps, which were hand-blown with intricate decorations, are some of the finest examples of Islamic glasswork. Egypt, Persia and Syria were important centres of Islamic glass production while, in eighth century Egypt, luster-painted glass techniques emerged. This saw glass painted with pigments containing silver or copper before being fired in a kiln at a low temperature. This ensured the pigment was absorbed beneath the surface, creating a permanent colour or stain. Pieces were also decorated with different coloured glass threads that were worked into the surface. Gilded, painted and enamelled glass followed and examples of elaborate designs can still be seen today in mosques and architecture throughout the UAE.

Specialised objects such as knives and armour, were adorned with detailed motifs. Silver dishes from the early eighth and ninth centuries were used at the Islamic courts while more practical items, such as candlesticks and bowls were made from metals such as bronze, steel and brass for everyday use. Silversmiths and goldsmiths designed royal crowns, necklaces, games. robes and jewelled wall hangings. Metal work designs were also created by piercing, engraving and hammering the metal from the inside. From around the 12th century, astronomical symbols appeared on Islamic metal work as the relationship between mapping the stars and Islam grew. Geography and astronomy motivated Islamic scientists to invent the Astrolabe, a highly decorative instrument to track the stars and planets.

Dubai Creek helped transform a small fishing village into the spectacular city we see today, while the Abu Dhabi Corniche has long been a hub of activity in the capital, both for business and leisure. Each stretch of water has, over the course of time, helped cities and indeed a nation, rise from the desert.

Over a century ago, as the Bedouin travelled through the desert, they found a place to settle in the modest fishing villages that have since become Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The warm and sheltered waters of the Arabian Gulf provided perfect conditions for pearls and this, in turn, saw coastal communities f lourish. Traditional boats known as dhows were built on the banks of the waterways to carry pearl divers out to reefs where they would courageously free dive to the seabed in search of precious oysters. By the early 19 th century, the pearl-diving trade had garnered great wealth for the nation. However this was shortlived and by the 1930s the development of the Japanese cultured pearl brought with it an end to the UAE’s lucrative pearling income. Despite this the waterways continued to play a major role in city

life, becoming ports for dhows ferrying goods from India and the Orient. Today, Dubai Creek and its bustling banks offer visitors a treasure trove of fascinating activities. Often referred to as the heart of Dubai, the salt-water creek originates in the Arabian Gulf and ends 14 kilometres away at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. Also known as Khor Dubai, it divides the city with Deira on one side and Bur Dubai on the other. Stroll along the water’s edge for a glimpse into Dubai’s trading past as all manner of goods are loaded onto dhows destined for neighbouring countries and beyond. For a further insight into Dubai’s rich heritage Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is a short walk away. This charming city quarter is renowned for its quaint cobbled streets and traditional wind towers. Once an enclave for fishermen who

found work on Dubai Creek, this area has been painstakingly restored with a clutch of art galleries and cafés featured alongside some of the city’s oldest buildings. Dubai Museum can also be found here and is well worth a visit as it includes innovatively designed exhibits, including displays charting Dubai’s transition from fishing village to pearl-diving hub and thriving metropolis. Perhaps one of the best ways to see Dubai Creek is from an abra, a traditional boat which ferries passengers across this enthralling waterway. Sit back, relax and gaze at both old and new Dubai to glean a true sense of the city’s soul. In Abu Dhabi, the Corniche features many of the capital’s top assets while boasting gleaming sands, lush parks and boutique shopping. On any given day of the week the Corniche is abuzz with activities. It’s the gateway to the city’s public beach and, at weekends especially, people pass along here to reach their favourite sunbathing, volleyball or swimming spots. bite to eat, while on the seaside path a regular stream of joggers, cyclists and roller-bladers make their way along the eight-kilometre stretch. In many ways, the Corniche is a microcosm of Abu Dhabi’s brief history. At one end, lies the old Port Zayed, where the city’s expansion really began, while at the other stands a symbol of the prosperity that overseas trade has brought to the country – Emirates Palace. In between and set back from the beach, high- and medium-rise buildings represent various stages of Abu Dhabi’s development from the original towers to the sleek new skyscrapers and high-rise hotels. A landscaped path snakes its way alongside the beach, breaking out into patches of park and a flower-covered bank every so often. Around the entrance to the public beach, the path broadens into a large paved area surrounded by cafés and ice-cream stalls. Situated further along the breakwater is the Heritage Village where reconstructed barasti huts and demonstrations of traditional Emirati crafts offer an insight into times gone by.

restaurants is growing here and currently there are over 400 Italian eateries in Dubai. For us, diversity and high standards are of prime importance. One of the greatest compliments we have is when Italian customers, with high expectations, say they have enjoyed better quality Italian food here in Dubai than in Italy. “We mostly work with ingredients based on seasonality, importing ingredients from different parts of the world such as Australia and Europe. The support we get from suppliers is invaluable and fortunately we have good suppliers in Dubai,” says Danese. “We meet on a regular basis to discuss ingredients with them. Our best sellers come from our fish trolley and we make sure we have fresh fish delivered through a special import from Italy and Southern Europe. Our signature dish at BiCE is rock-salt seabass which is available most days of the week, again due to our fresh delivery. We keep seasonality in our dishes within the prestige menu where guests can find something new every month, such as asparagus in spring and white truff les in autumn,” adds Danese who began his cooking career in London before moving on to run his own restaurant in Spain where he met the BiCE team who then lured him to the UAE. “Dubai is a remarkable market in terms of both offering and demand with good restaurants and knowledgeable customers. Looking ahead to the future, there is real opportunity related to Italian fine-dining cuisine here. Our main focus is, and will always be, maintaining the high quality food and service we are known for as the Italian dining scene in Dubai continues to grow,” he adds.

For example, in the northern part of Italy, we commonly use polenta, a simple ingredient that can be cooked in so many delicious ways whether boiled, baked or eaten on its own for breakfast. vegetables. One of my favourites is the cime di rapa which is grown in Puglia. hiStORy iN the mAkiNg the earliest known habitation in this part of the world dates back as far as 5500 BCe. however, it was in 1971, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu dhabi's ruler from 1966 to 2004, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al maktoum, the ruler of dubai from 1958 to 1990, set the wheels in motion with their neighbouring sheikhdoms, Sharjah, umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman (Ras Al khaimah joined in 1972) to form an alliance. Prior to this, the seven emirates had lived in relative harmony, united through a protectorate treaty with great Britain, which earned them the name the trucial States. it was a successful partnership, but in 1968 the united kingdom ended the treaty. in order to maintain security, Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid reached out to their neighbours and in 1971 they signed an agreement, which signified the creation of the united Arab emirates.

SHEIKH ZAYED ROAD As Dubai's main artery, this is one of the busiest roads along with Al Khail and Emirates Road.

DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

I am originally from Beijing in China but have spent the greater part of my life in Singapore and have been living in Dubai for four years. There is always something interesting happening here. I attend art exhibitions often as there is a real cultural evolution taking place. It’s amazing the number of art galleries opening up in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the quality and variety of work on display. Dubai is a beautiful place to be all year round, however it is simply irresistible from October to April. At weekends, I enjoy some quality time with my family and enjoy lazing around in our garden. If I ever feel homesick, I simply prepare a nice pot of Chinese tea as I always keep a stock of the very best green, red or fruit and herbal teas from China. I play my favourite Chinese music, slouch on my sofa and imagine I am at home in Qingdao. Dining is something my whole family enjoy and there is an incredible selection of restaurants to experience in Dubai. Kaleidoscope at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai offers a wonderful

international buffet and is great place for the family. I love the Brazilian brunch at Frevo, Fairmont The Palm which is held every Friday. Gaucho at Dubai International Financial Centre is an excellent choice for fine Argentinian food. When friends and family come to visit, I make a point of taking them to Burj Khalifa. Not only is it the tallest building in the world, but it is a breathtaking structure and an incredible feat of design. Atlantis The Palm, Dubai is a fantastic place to take friends and family with its stunning location on Palm Jumeirah and wealth of entertainment options. Living in Dubai, we are in the perfect location for shopping. My favourite place to shop is Mall of the Emirates. There is just so much choice under one roof. Dubai is a city that welcomes and embraces everyone. I feel so at home here. My fondest memories are all connected to time spent with my family. We have a beautiful life here and I treasure every moment of it.
