Freedom of expression ——

Whether in the form of striking sculptures or colourful murals, the varied and vast public spaces across the UAE provide the perfect canvas for artists to showcase their creativity

Mural in Karama

For centuries, it seemed the only way an artist could gain recognition for their work was to have their creations displayed in galleries, curated by collectors or housed in museums. But this all began to change during the 1970s when a prevalent graffiti community began adorning streets around the world, often without permission, with stencil art. While initially looked upon in a negative fashion, this form of expression has not only become acceptable, but is now revered. British graffiti artist Banksy has become a global phenomenon, with reproductions of his iconic images being sold by leading auction houses around the world. Most recently, one of his paintings sold for US$1.4 million at Sotheby’s, yet instead of the price tag making headlines, it was the fact that the piece was set to self-destruct, shredding in front of shocked onlookers. The stunt, orchestrated by the artist himself, turned the auction into a work of live art, with the anonymous artist later quoting Picasso in an Instagram post: “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge”. This further highlighted the popularity of his work, with the shredded image now said to be even more valuable. While Banksy may be the most prominent name attached to this art form, he is just one of the hundreds of artists using public spaces to showcase their work. Thankfully, the UAE has fully embraced this creative practice and now street art in all its various guises can be found throughout the country.

Local developer Meraas was one of the first companies to seek out artists in an effort to transform high-profile destinations within Dubai. As part of the Dubai Walls initiative, 15 of the best street artists from all over the world were invited to create an enticing element to the City Walk expansion. Here you’ll find small stencil works from Blek Le Rat, evocative portraits by Australian artist RONE and colourful murals by New Yorker Beau Stanton. Bright murals can also be found throughout Jumeirah Beach Residence, with many created by Dubai-based street artist Fathima Mohiuddin, also known as Fats. Mohiuddinʼs work features her signature style of bold, angular and abstract elements that combine to create striking pieces, often with a subtle nod to the emirate she calls home.

In recent years ‘old Dubai’ has also undergone a major transformation. Once known for its budget shopping and authentic Indian and Pakistani restaurants, the buildings in Karama became a blank canvas for a host of international artists. Much of the work took place in 2016 when eight prominent street artists were invited to paint 24 murals on the side of 12 apartment buildings and shops. Many of the creations reflect the history of the UAE, with incredibly detailed paintings of falcons and even a nod to the emirate’s rich pearling history. Abu Dhabi has been equally captivated when it comes to street art, with the most notable piece situated between Al Raha Mall and Al Bandar. This 600-metre stretch features a range of murals from a team of multinational artists who spent five weeks working on the impressive project. Tasked with capturing the spirit of Emirati culture, you’ll find symbols such as Arabic lanterns and coffee pots, as well as a painting of a young boy walking a camel.

Stirring sculptures

While graffiti tends to feature bold colours and eye-catching designs, another form of art that can be found throughout the UAE is often more understated. As you navigate the bustling attractions of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, numerous sculptures can be found dotted throughout the emirates, many of which can be found in prime locations, much like The Dubai Mall’s Human Waterfall. Perhaps the most striking of all is Together by Syrian artist Lutfi Romhein. Found in the shadow of Burj Khalifa, these two stylised sculptures feature a male figure carved from marble and a female made of black granite. Far from the only artwork in Downtown Dubai, the area is also home to a 1.5-tonne bronze sculpture of a horse created by Colombian figurative artist Fernando Botero. On the outskirts of the district, there is another striking monument which was created by Korean sculptor Jaehyo Lee. The Chorus sculpture uses 3.4 tonnes of steel and 7.6 tonnes of wood and was inspired by the flow and movement of a gathering in Gwanghwamun Square in South Korea. Abu Dhabi has also embraced this form of art, with Umm Al Emarat Park home to five life-size bronze sculptures of iconic UAE wildlife. Collectively known as Jewels of Abu Dhabi, they include the dugong, Arabian oryx, greater flamingo, Hawksbill turtle and Saker falcon, and are permanently on show to help raise public awareness as all of these animals are threatened or endangered species.

More to appreciate Art Emaar is set to unveil a host of new installations in the coming year as it bids to attract world-renowned talent Installation by Art Emaar

Not content with the current offering in Dubai, a partnership between Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, and the Roads and Transport Authority, has announced the Metro Murals Project. Part of an initiative to turn the city into an open-air museum that celebrates art and creativity, metro pillars between DIFC and Emirates Towers stations will be adorned with stunning murals. Daniel Cortez from Peru and Miami-based artist Elio Mercado, also known as Evocal, have already started working on their designs, one of which will feature large floating jellyfish and another a huge blue whale. This is also set to be just the start of the transformation process, with bridges, tunnels, walking tracks, and bus stops all set for an artistic makeover. Fathima Mohiuddin will also be adding to her collection of work in Dubai after teaming up with property developers Emaar. The prolific street artist will transform a number of properties in Downtown Dubai to celebrate UAE National Day and is currently finishing up numerous pieces in Souk Al Bahar, including a huge falcon boasting her signature bold angles and chrome colours. The work is being completed in conjunction with Art Emaar, which acts as a platform for ambitious art initiatives in various forms across the UAE. Providing artists with an urban canvas, it includes a 142-metre long art installation of the UAE Flag in The Dubai Mall which was installed last month. Art Emaar is set to unveil a host of new installations in the coming year as it bids to attract world-renowned talent while also championing artists from within the UAE.

A LEGACY 47 YEARS IN THE MAKING Today, the UAE is a force to be reckoned with and a global hub for travel and trade. The nation’s rapid transformation from a humble fishing village to a modern metropolis has been extraordinary. And it can all be traced back to that moment in history when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was appointed the first president of the UAE in 1971, in recognition of his role in establishing the federation.

Painting by Ans Soza

U N I T I N G A C O U N T RY It was a little over 50 years ago, on February 18, 1968, that the leaders representing the seven emirates we know today met to shake hands on a simple decision that would forever change the course of history. It was on this day that a formal agreement was reached between the rulers, binding their sheikhdoms to one another. Three years later, the British treaty with the Trucial States of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah ended. And the very next day, on December 2, 1971, the United Arab Emirates was formed.

UAE National Day celebrations

IN HIS HONOUR In August 2017, the year 2018 was declared as Year of Zayed, marking 100 years since the former president’s birth. Speaking at the announcement, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, said: “The Year of Zayed is a great national occasion when we proudly share memories of the life of the founding father and his gift to us of deeply-rooted values, principles and traditions that have become part of our Emirati identity.”

T I M E T O C E L E B R AT E Every year, on UAE National Day, the country’s leaders come together to pay homage to the legacy of the founding fathers. This December, the celebrations are set to be extra special in honour of the Year of Zayed. A time for festivity, the nation will light up in red, black, white and green, representing the colours of the flag, and the emirates will come together with a host of family-friendly events – think parades, cultural performances, art displays and more.

UAE National Day celebrations

As part of the official 47th UAE National Day celebrations, December 2 this year will see over 22,000 guests gathering together at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi to witness “This is Zayed. This is the UAE” – a spectacle that will take the audiences on an immersive journey through live performances, digital art and inspirational readings. While another edition of Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival invites visitors to the capital to embark on a cultural voyage through the UAE with a series of performances and events.

The Founder’s Memorial

REMEMBERING A LEADER Throughout 2018 a series of events and initiatives have taken place across the emirates for the Year of Zayed. From poetry readings, calligraphy competitions and photography exhibitions to student street parades and memorial art, the nation has gone all out. And there are still plenty more commemorative experiences to enjoy. The Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel sheds light on Sheikh Zayed’s lasting impact on the nation with an exhibition at the property’s art gallery. Open to the public until December 30, ‘Tribute to Zayed, the Nation’s Pride’ will showcase creative works by 20 talented artists from around the globe. Also documenting key moments from his life, One&Only Royal Mirage Dubai tells Sheikh Zayed’s story, offering rare glimpses into his visionary leadership with an exhibition of archived photographs on display at The Grand Gallery within the hotel. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an iconic landmark, commissioned by the late president and a proud emblem of Abu Dhabi’s cultural diversity. Unlike most mosques,
which are strictly for Muslims only, it welcomes visitors of all faiths. The Founder’s Memorial, a permanent national tribute, can now also be found along Abu Dhabi Corniche. At the centrepiece is The Constellation, a stunning artwork crafted in Sheikh Zayed’s image from a total of 1,327 geometric shapes suspended from 1,110 cables. Illuminated by more than 2,000 lights, this celestial display is a symbol of the founding father’s guiding presence over the nation.

Sole DXB 2018

It’s got Sole ——

An intriguing clash of fashion, art, music and street culture, Sole DXB is one festival that packs a unique punch

Everyone’s favourite fusion festival is back! Sole DXB is once again set to get cultural pulses racing with its eclectic mix of all things urban – from fashion and music to art and sport. In a city touted for embracing a melting pot of cultures, it’s apt that this hybrid festival was brought to life right here in Dubai. Now attracting around 22,000 visitors, Sole DXB has definitely come a long way since its humble start in 2010. Returning to its home at Dubai Design District (d3), the three-night, two-day event takes place from December 6 to 8. Each year, the festival draws on themes from a range of captivating destinations – think Tokyo, New York and London – and this season is no different. For 2018, a new generation of creatives take centre stage as Sole DXB celebrates artists and cultural movements from South Africa along with India, Turkey and Nigeria. Raj Malhotra, co-founder of Sole DXB, says: “We made multiple trips to Cape Town and Johannesburg, connecting with designers, artists, musicians and creators in each city, learning their stories and digging into their culture. We feel that South Africa is a good representation of what street culture looks like when it’s still organic, in cities with rich and complicated histories. South Africa’s recent past has given voice to a new generation of creators that are forming ideas shaped by race, culture and identity.”

He adds: “With every community we’ve explored, Sole DXB has looked to build a direct bridge between our city and theirs. This exchange of ideas will be showcased through our talks, live music programme and screenings at this year’s event.” Although the festival has grown to encompass a variety of artistic elements, street culture and style is still very much at its heart, and considering the hold athleisure continues to have over the fashion world, we’re sure the planned launch of several new collections will draw in the crowds. Expect hotly anticipated activations from adidas, including collaborations with Yung Series, Never Made, Yeezy and Dragonball Z. On the luxury side, Dior and FarFetch will be on hand with a series of exclusives while Puma is set to launch its Selena Gomez X Puma Strong Girl collection.

There will also be several emerging brands supported, including Leaf Apparel and Unknown Union from South Africa, Almost Gods and Nor Black Nor White from India and homegrown UAE talents including Precious Trust and Amongst Few. And while it’s a noticeable factor, there’s more than just seriously good street style on offer. Music wise, visitors can expect a host of hip-hop heavyweights, including rapper Nas and Orange Blood as headline acts, as well as performances by American R&B duo Lion Babe, rapper Giggs and singer DaniLeigh. Last year, Sole DXB teamed up with The Andy Warhol Museum to present its final exhibition of Letters to Andy Warhol, while a partnership with community cinema platform Cinema Akil offered an intriguing film screening on women in hip-hop on the opening night. This year, visitors can also expect several captivating cultural events taking place throughout the event while sports fans can also look forward to Sole DXB’s basketball tournament Sole Ball Above All Classic. A scenic stroll through a park on a beautiful winter’s day is one of life’s simplest, yet most enjoyable pleasures. Fortunately for those in the UAE, a winter’s day is filled with plenty of sunshine and a cooling breeze. Despite the region’s iconic desert landscape, there’s lots of greenery across the city. Dubai Miracle Garden is a whimsical world of bright blooms boasting more than 100 million individual flowers of over 70 different variations. Wander through the grounds mesmerised by the many floral displays. Elsewhere, Al Barsha Pond Park caters perfectly to families and nearby communities. Encircling a large man-made lake, the picturesque park is dotted with quaint benches shaded under pretty floral canopies and lovely green banks that are ideal for hosting get-togethers. The park also features a basketball court, tennis courts, mini football pitch and outdoor gym equipment – not to mention three kids play areas to keep the little ones entertained. Winter wonderland ——

From festive markets to tree lighting ceremonies, here’s your go-to guide to the UAE’s festive celebrations

It’s truly a magical time of the year. You’ll find firs outlining many a window, the malls buzzing with renewed fervour, hotels decking the halls with tinsel and holly and the entire city lighting up with festive cheer. The landscape changes every December with winter markets popping up across Dubai and restaurants serving everything from mince pies and mulled wine to turkey with all the trimmings. And if you’re anything like us, you’ll enjoy soaking it all up throughout December. Here we present a round up of the best things to see and do in the UAE this festive season. Are you ready to get into the spirit of things?

Souk Festive Market at Madinat Jumeirah This winter festival at Madinat Jumeirah recreates the magic of the season with a setting reminiscent of a Christmas village in the European countryside – think Santa’s grotto, a faux snow park for the kids and stalls selling all kinds of tasty treats. Dhow cruises along the winding waterways of Madinat Jumeirah with Santa Claus and his elves add a local spin to the event while the North Pole train running through the market keeps things traditional. Ideal to get the whole family together, the Souk Festive Market runs from December 20 to 28 this year from 3pm onwards on weekdays and 1pm onwards on weekends until midnight.  04 3647555

One of the best ways to explore the huge expanse is with a desert safari in a vintage 1950’s Land Rover. Written in the stars ——

Combining state-of-the-art creations with forward-thinking designs, French maison Van Cleef & Arpels journeys into the past with its latest line of luxury watches, to a time when mankind looked to the cosmos for answers

For luxury watch and jewellery brand Van Cleef & Arpels, the measurement of time is not limited to the seconds, minutes and hours a timepiece represents. It goes beyond the imaginable, embracing the change in seasons, the movement of the stars, the dance of the planets and the evolution of art and science through the centuries. The poetic interpretation of time has, for decades, remained the maison’s true signature and the guiding philosophy behind each of its splendid creations. Once again the brand looks to the stars for inspiration, unveiling an impressive new line of horological masterpieces. And as global president and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels, Nicolas Bos, rightly puts it, “The Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux brings the night sky to life on your wrist.” No ordinary collection, the Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux line is part of the larger Poetic Complications collection and has been introduced exclusively for its female patrons. It follows, and perfectly complements, its masculine version – the Midnight Zodiac Lumineux – which was introduced earlier this year at SIHH. Just like its male counterpart, the Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux line features a set of 12 models, one representing each of the 12 symbols of the western zodiac. While for most watchmakers, the traditional approach to watchmaking starts from function, Van Cleef & Arpels narrates a different tale, tossing aside all conventional notions of timekeeping. Bos explains: “It’s always the story that comes first and it then drives the design. Once you have your concept in place, it allows you to interpret it the way you want. That’s how the technical development follows.” This philosophy is clearly reflected in the Poetic Astronomy collections. Sharing the story behind the exquisite new line, he says: “Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and it expresses mankind’s eternal fascination with the skies. For years, we’ve sought answers to the origins of the cosmos. This is no new information but a simple reminder that timekeeping and watchmaking have as much to do with astronomy as the movement of the stars and planets because, when it comes to the art of horology, all we do is seek to reproduce the passage of time. “If you study 17th or 18th-century artistic interpretations of the skies, you’ll find a connection between two disciplines, that in the view of scientists, can never be associated with one another – astronomy and astrology. But interestingly, when you take a closer look, astronomy is about understanding the skies whereas astrology seeks to understand how the skies influence our lives, choices and destinies. The western zodiac beautifully explores this connection and with our new collection, we seek to narrate it in the most poetic of forms.”

Although both collections nod to the spellbinding movement of the stars and planets, on the men’s side, the watches feature white gold cases and rich blue enamel dials with intricate white gold details forming the shape of the zodiac sign. While, the women’s line champions an ornate look and feel with white gold cases fully set with diamonds varying in size. The deep blue dial evokes the night sky as the elaborate multi-coloured enamel work on it corresponds to the specific zodiac sign with the constellation composed of delicate, translucent blue enamel beads. There’s something innately charming about each piece, you’ll instantly fall in love with the intricate creativity displayed in each of the unique elements like the lion’s head in yellow gold and yellow sapphires for Leo, the Taurus bull modelled out of emerald-hued enamel and the Sagittarius bow set in spessartite garnets with a pink gold arrow. Yet these imaginative pieces are more than just a visual delight. They are also a feat of watchmaking. A closer look at the dial reveals the principle of piezoelectricity at work, for which Van Cleef & Arpels holds a patent. If you press the pusher on the left-hand side of the watch case, you’ll feel a subtle vibration before the enamel beads on the dial, which represent the constellation, light up for a few seconds. And there you have the night sky! Crafted at Van Cleef & Arpels’s Meyrin workshops, these automatic wristwatches are powered by the movement of one’s hand. There is no battery or capacitor at work and the constellation is powered purely from the pressing of a button. As simple as this complication may seem on the surface, there’s clearly magnificence at play, underpinned by technical engineering that sets this collection apart from the brand’s previous efforts in trying to tap into the cosmos. Bos says: “The Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux was quite a long project. It involved a lot of research and technological development to enable the creation of light in the very limited space of a watch case with mechanical movements. It took a lot of fine tuning but the results have thrilled us all.” With all the work that goes on behind the scenes, being the man running the show is no easy feat, although Bos makes it seem effortless. “We are quite lucky to be in an environment where the cycles are longer compared to some other industries. It doesn’t mean that we work slowly. It’s just that it takes time to build a collection and develop technique. “We work on plans that will only come to fruition in the next three, five or six years and the best part about staying with a brand for years is that you get to create connections between different projects and therefore, bring a bit of you into the collection. It’s exciting.”

It’s always the story that comes first and it then drives the design The new pieces are all set to hit the region this month and Bos says: “We have big plans for Dubai and the region. We recently opened a new store at The Dubai Mall and are looking to further improve our network in the best possible locations. Today, the Middle Eastern market is as important to us as traditional markets in the United States, Europe and Japan. We look at it in the same way.” But the most significant aspect of it all is the impact the brand has made in the watchmaking industry. Traditionally, men have always been perceived as watch collectors, but Van Cleef & Arpels’ collections have always appealed more to women. Bos concludes: “When we first launched the Poetic Complications collection, everybody thought we were stupid because women were not interested in complicated watches and movements. But now I see pretty much all the other brands following suit as there seems to be a rebalance in what was previously perceived as a predominantly masculine world. I think we’ve played our part in helping shift this perspective and put the focus on female collectors.”

The Pointe

The right balance —— Using ingredients and techniques from the east and west, Chalet Berezka is out to prove that fusion fare can be done without the confusion In an international hub like Dubai, it is no surprise that there is a high demand for fusion cuisine, with restaurants touting menus that mix and match cultural influences. Yet the idea of a culinary melting pot can often strike fear into even the most liberal of palates. All too often the contrasting flavours simply do not complement each other and customers are left a combination of baffled and disappointed. However, when a chef is able to strike the right balance, the results can be truly memorable. Chalet Berezka is one such venue that claims to have the recipe for success with a menu that combines European, Central Asian and Far Eastern flavours. A brand new opening at The Pointe, Palm Jumeirah’s new waterfront destination, the fully-licensed restaurant is split across two floors and has plenty of space for al fresco dining. The terrace on the first floor is particularly impressive with spectacular views of Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai. It will also be a fantastic spot to watch The Pointe’s dancing fountains which are set to be unveiled next year. Inside the restaurant, there are two very different spaces. The downstairs is elegantly decorated and features a large open kitchen, while the space on the first floor has hand-painted furniture, vibrant colours and an array of seating that all faces towards the main stage. The venue’s stage will feature live entertainment, set to be a nightly occurrence from the new year. In the meantime, the focus is very much on the eclectic menu that is set to expand further in the coming weeks. The chefs are still in the process of finalising the dishes that will make up the completed menu, but even during this initial phase, there is already an impressive selection on offer. Take your pick from hot and cold starters, soups, steaks and fresh seafood, as well as a selection of meats that are prepared on a Japanese robata grill. And despite this still being the soft launch phase, there is plenty to satisfy those with a sweet tooth with 10 scrumptious desserts that range from classic Russian dishes such as honey cake to a modern interpretation of tiramisu flavoured with matcha rather than traditional cocoa.

The presentation was striking, thanks to the dishes being served on a large bed of ice These interesting combinations can be found throughout the menu, with highlights including everything from the popular Korean side dish kimchi to Chilean sea bass. You’ll even find a Spanish gazpacho, a classic Thai tom yum soup and traditional shashlik, which is popular across Eastern Europe. During our visit, we decided to sample as many different flavours as we possibly could, opting for a number of smaller plates that are ideal for sharing. The Arabic mezze was the first to arrive and featured a selection of four dips and homemade paratha. The hummus and mutabbal were particularly flavourful, while the presentation was striking, thanks to the dishes being served on a large bed of ice.

Lamb and chicken samsa

Next up was the grilled avocado which came with crab and a ginger dressing. Well balanced, the crab, which was light and fresh, was definitely the main attraction. Rounding off the starters then was the lamb and chicken samsa. These savoury pastries can be found throughout Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Xinjiang, and are filled with various meats that have been slow cooked along with onions. Traditionally a type of street food, the pastry is crispy while the meat inside remains incredibly tender. From the main courses, we selected two types of shashlik, a Central Asian dish that consists of skewered and grilled cubes of meat. Similar to a shish kebab, both the lamb and turkey were particularly juicy and retaining a great charcoal flavour. Finally, once it was on to desserts it immediately became clear that the pastry chef was particularly skilled. The Anna Pavlova had a meringue that was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, served with an indulgent cream and a selection of fresh berries that were complimented with a flavourful puree. The traditional French Napolean was equally impressive, thanks to the wonderfully light puff pastry and thick layers of pastry cream. The perfect ending to our meal, Chalet Berezka may have an ambitious menu, but fortunately, they also possess a team of chefs who can execute classic cooking techniques with big flavours from the east and west. Rami Eid

Juggling two roles as a music producer and marketing manager, Eid shares his perspective on life in the UAE A lot of people leave their home countries in the hope of making a better life in Dubai. What they don’t expect is to become part of a universal family that contributes to a multicultural environment, giving everyone the opportunity to learn, respect and celebrate each other’s traditions. I, for one, wouldn’t have been where I am now if it weren’t for the opportunities that came my way in this vibrant city. It helped me achieve my full potential on both personal and professional levels. Living in Dubai means there is no limit to innovation and professional experience. I was born in the UAE and have spent most of my life here. I took a break during my university years to study in Beirut and returned to Dubai after graduating with a business and marketing degree. I have worked in the media industry for around 10 years since and I am now a marketing manager for a global brand. But I also devote a lot of my time to my career as a music producer. I’ve loved music ever since I was young and learned to play the piano. Recently, I’ve found a passion for electronic music, and producing tunes. When I’m not busy juggling these two roles, I spend my time catching up with friends at some of my favourite venues in the city. The Belgian Beer Café, The Cheesecake Factory, Caramel Restaurant & Lounge Dubai, Miss Tess Dubai and Nola Eatery & Social House are some of the spots I frequent. And if I don’t have anything planned, I head to Kite Beach or La Mer for a swim or to jog along the shore. When I’m seeking a little more rest and relaxation, I like to head to Ajman. It’s a great break from the city’s bustle yet not too far from home and also has some fantastic hotels and restaurants. Winter by far is the best season in Dubai. As the weather cools down, outdoor venues open their doors, global acts and events take place, from food festivals and music concerts to fitness challenges as well as art and cultural fairs. For people who visit during this time, I recommend a trip to Global Village, Dubai Parks and Resorts and an adventure among the dunes on a thrilling desert safari.
