ENGINEERED FOR MEN WHO KNOW THAT THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE COMPLICATED.

Portuguese Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5023: You don’t need to walk on the surface of the moon to succumb to its fascination; after all, its effects are omnipresent here on earth. Its gravitational pull causes the rise and fall of the tides. Its appearance and disappearance mark the end and the beginning of each day. And wonders of all kinds have been ascribed to the full moon for as long as anyone can remember. These qualities were the inspiration for the master watch

makers at IWC who developed the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar. The 18carat red gold case houses an impressive automatic movement with a perpetual calendar and perpetual moon phase display, countdown to the next full moon and a Pellaton automatic winding system, to mention only the most sophisticated of its complications. Needless to say, it runs with the same unerring precision as the moon in its orbit around our planet. IWC . E N G I N E E R E D FO R M E N .

Abu Dhabi has come a long way in a very short space of time and life here now bears very little resemblance to the simple existence carved out by Bedouin tribes in the desert. Nevertheless, the emirate retains strong ties to the customs and practises established by previous generations and women’s handicrafts (pictured) is one of many local traditions being preserved as part of a push to promote Emirati heritage. At the Abu Dhabi International Hunting & Equestrian Exhibit, which took place last month, local women displayed traditional skills as part of the event’s heritage programme.

Set for success With Hollywood’s finest descending and local production developing apace, Abu Dhabi’s film industry is starting to pack a considerable punch Words by

Melissa sleiMan

When it comes to thrills, spills and cinematic bombast, it doesn’t get much bigger or louder than a Jerry Bruckheimer production. So naturally, when the Hollywood action mogul’s team hit Abu Dhabi’s Liwa desert earlier this month to shoot major sequences for Beware the Night – an Eric Bana and Olivia Munn-fronted paranormal crime film directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcisim of Emily Rose) – the buzz was suitably electric. Bruckheimer’s blockbuster, co-produced by Sony Screen Gems with support from Abu Dhabi-based production partner twofour54 intaj, has qualified for Abu Dhabi’s film industry catalysing incentive. Up for grabs is a 30 percent rebate on filming expenditure in the emirate including location, production and post-production services. Launched in 2012 by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC), which is part of the Abu Dhabi Media Zone Authority’s commercial arm, twofour54, the new incentive is unique to the Middle East and North Africa region. Already it has benefited several regional TV and commercial productions, including Hammam Shami, a 30-episode Syrian Ramadan drama and the largest of its kind to be filmed outside Syria. In addition to providing the rebate and location options, ADFC has supported Beware The Night with visas, filming permits and customs support, while twofour54 intaj weighed in with full production services including crew, equipment, studios and other services. Glenn Gainor, executive producer of the film, was unequivocally effusive about the package on offer. “Abu Dhabi seemed like the natural choice for this feature because of the production rebate, the competitively priced production services and facilities and, of course, the unique desert landscape here.” Viewers will be able to appreciate this in several scenes starring Abu Dhabi’s Liwa desert, including the opening sequence and a key flashback scene.

33

dis c o v er /FILM

“ADFC assisted with location scouting and we’ve been able to limit the size of our travelling team due to the quality of crew available locally through our UAE producer twofour54 intaj,” she added. As well as utilising Abu Dhabi as a backdrop, Beware the Night is also expected to leave a lasting legacy by, among other things, employing a team of Emiratis to work on the production team. “One particularly exciting aspect about Hollywood movies such as Beware the Night being filmed in Abu Dhabi, is the opportunities they afford young Emiratis seeking filmmaking experience,” explains Noura Al Kaabi, chief executive at twofour54. “The inspiration gained on set and on location will drive a new generation of Emirati talent and ultimately help to build Abu Dhabi’s film and entertainment industries.” Beware The Night isn’t the only star-studded film to be shot in the UAE capital this year. Event and production company, Sky Events Management is gearing up for a particularly busy period with the Chuck Russell-directed Arabian Nights starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Zac Efron and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson set to start filming in October. “This will be a major milestone for the UAE capital. Some 75 percent of the shooting

will happen in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. We have lovely locations to work with –the desert landscape lends itself to the film beautifully,” says Akram Sabry, general manager of Sky Events Management. Then, in December, Sky Events Management will help facilitate scenes for a musical version of Romeo and Juliet which will feature One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles’s cinematic debut alongside more seasoned screen pros such as Jack Black, Imelda Staunton and John Travolta. Yet while the Hollywood bonanzas inevitably grab the headlines, they are just the latest tip of the emirate’s filmic iceberg. Image Nation, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Media, epitomises a multi-layered strategy by the government to drive Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning ambitions both behind and in front of the camera. Presiding over a US$1 billion investment fund, Image Nation’s international investment arm has backed box office hits such as Contagion, The Help, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Bollywood smash, My Name is Khan. Profits are strategically funnelled back into Image Nation’s Abu Dhabi-focused division, which subsidises local productions and training programmes aimed at fostering Emirati talent.

2

Earlier this year, Image Nation upped its educative ante by enlisting Hollywood producer Walter Parkes to mentor and teach young Emiratis hoping to break into the local film industry. Parkes, whose repertoire includes Gladiator, the Men in Black series and Flight, has also been commissioned to acquire, develop and produce projects here. “It was Peter Jackson who created a critical mass of talent in New Zealand and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do so that we can have a viable industry here,” Garin explained at the time. New Zealand’s film and television sector now contributes a staggering US$2.78 billion – or 1.4 percent – to the country’s total GDP and it is hoped that Parkes’ expertise may help place the UAE film industry on the road to similar success. Image Nation’s breakthrough UAE film was Sea Shadow by Nawaf Al-Janahi, a trailblazing figure within the local film industry who helped found the Emirates Film Competition in 2002. Premiering at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 2011, the film follows teenage Emiratis, Mansoor and Kaltham as they struggle with the complexity of traditions and conventions on an emotive rite of passage. The film hit the number two spot in the UAE cinema charts during its first week of release before going on a critically acclaimed tour through more than 20 countries.

Next on Image Nation’s UAE radar is Djinn, a hotly anticipated horror – the first ever to be made in the UAE – with legendary Texas Chainsaw Massacre maestro Tobe Hooper at the helm and due for release later this year. Beyond content creation, Image Nation’s other initiatives to boost the local industry include the Arab Film Studio training programme, which is held in partnership with twofour54. Mustafa Abbas is one of many up-and-coming Emirati filmmakers to benefit from Abu Dhabi’s creative nurturing. Chosen by the ADFC to represent and promote the UAE film industry alongside fellow directors such as Al Janahi at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, he is gearing up to release Sunset State, a big budget short film produced by twofour54’s Creative Lab division. The film revolves around an American novelist and an Emirati college student with troubled pasts and a diminishing will to live. Abbas is aiming to create an immersive,

thought-provoking experience that taps into the protagonists’ innermost feelings in both English and Arabic. “ We had some g reat suppor t f rom twofour54, which helped me pick my crew and gave me all the resources to bring the film to life,” says Abbas, who also wrote and edited the film. “It was also kind enough to have faith in me to do what I felt best. This creative freedom is not common and does not go unappreciated.” This month, Abu Dhabi’s cinematic vibrancy is under the spotlight as the city prepares to host its seventh Abu Dhabi Film Festival. Expectations are high that the event will draw large crowds when it takes place from October 24 to November 2. Large sums have been invested in the event. Recently, the emirate donated another round of its Sanad (Arabic for ‘support’) of grants worth US$500,000 to 16 projects across the Arabic world. It would also appear that audiences in the region are becoming more discerning and engaged, with Aflamnah, the Middle East’s crowdfunding portal for creative ideas, shaking up debate. “We have already helped around 40 projects crowdfund and get the necessary backing to make things happen,” says Vida Rizq, Aflamnah’s principal founder. In June, Al Jahani was named as Aflamnah’s first-ever ambassador, underlining his reputation as a regional cinematic innovator. Elsewhere, venerable institutions such as the New York Film Academy are investing in Abu Dhabi and reporting strong interest in their courses.

5

“Abu Dhabi brings together old-world calm and cosmopolitan sophistication in a clean and safe environment and has made a massive commitment to developing the film and TV industry in the region as well as promoting international culture and art,” says Imad Deir Atany, managing director of the New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi. “However, cinema doesn’t just need studios and equipment. It also requires educated talent and audiences and that is where we aim to make a difference.” The New York Film Academy’s mission in Abu Dhabi, adds Atany, is to provide world-class education in film through intensive hands-on programmes in filmmaking and acting. “In the near future, with all the potential talent we have and the support from the government, we will transform a promising film scene into a blossoming industry,” adds Atany.

Enjoy a new point of view with an aerial perspective on the UAE’s most spectacular sights

Some of the world’s most photographed attractions can be found in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. As innovative and modern cities, each boasts an impressive roster of exceptional sights and iconic locations. The world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa towers over Downtown Dubai and commands the attention of every passing photographer while a host of attractions at its base such as The Dubai Fountain and The Dubai Mall complete the picture-perfect panorama. Luxurious hotels and resorts Burj Al Arab and Atlantis The Palm, Dubai are also among the headline attractions that spring to mind when thinking of Dubai. In Abu Dhabi, the gleaming domes and beautifully ornate architecture of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the UAE’s most stunning sights, while the incredible splendour of Emirates Palace is another of the capital’s must-visit locations. Aerial photography offers a wonderfully fresh perspective on iconic vistas. Requiring a little skill and a keen eye for detail, a view from the air not only allows for sensational panoramas to unfold, but transforms familiar frames to challenge the way in which we consider each scene. 1 Palm Jumeirah, Dubai 2 Dubai coastline

From above, elements in each image are enhanced and at the same time simplified to highlight geometric shapes, architectural design details or geological formations. The UAE is awash with extraordinary scenes ranging from the futuristic, in examples of contemporary architecture, to the natural wonders of the UAE’s coastline and the waterways of Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi Corniche. A host of companies provide the opportunity to take to the skies, camera at the ready to capture the changing vistas below. Seawings is one of the country’s most established aerial operators and offers a variety of packages for up to nine passengers to take in the major sights of Dubai and Abu Dhabi fby seaplane. One particularly worthwhile experience sees the Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane set off from a pontoon at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on a 40-minute flight along the coastline to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island.

s h oot i n t ro/ DIS COVE R

Within a few minutes of its impressive take off from the watery runway of Dubai Creek, the plane reaches 2,000 feet (609 metres). A spectacular view of some of Dubai’s most historical areas is offered as the plane passes over Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Bur Dubai and the creek. As old Dubai passes from view, the city’s most notable landmarks are presented as never before. The horizon is soon filled with modern marvels and an aerial view is undoubtedly one of the best ways to appreciate a clutch of world-leading structures. Standing 828 metres (2,716 feet) tall with more than 160 storeys, soaring over the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa is a thrilling experience. The magnitude of The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping mall, is also awe-inspiring from the air and the aquamarine waters of Burj Lake add a vibrant dash of colour to the scene. From there, the seaplane heads south down the coast and circles another wellknown Dubai landmark, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab. Built on a manmade island 280 metres off shore, one of the world’s most exclusive hotels boasts stunning architectural features including a helipad stretching out from the side of the structure for the convenience of its exclusive clientele. A little further on, the world-famous Palm Jumeirah dominates the view with its

fronds reaching out into the Arabian Gulf and Atlantis The Palm, Dubai standing tall at its tip. Much like The World islands, a view from the air truly showcases the ingenious design. Heading slightly inland, the architectural wonders of Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers come into view as ultramodern towers are arranged around the world’s largest manmade marina and a series of lakes.

U p a n d away The Yas Classique Experience departs from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and lands at Yas Marina. It takes 40 minutes and costs AED1,450 per person or AED1, 550 with Ferrari World entry included. Seawings offers a range of experiences such as tours of architecture in Dubai, the UAE coastline and an aerial exploration of Abu Dhabi. For reservations visit seawings.ae or call 04 8070708

The journey continues along the coastline offering up beautiful views over the Arabian Gulf before reaching the capital. Upon arriving in Abu Dhabi, an unusual disc-shaped building stands out. Aldar HQ, home of Yas Island developer Aldar, is one of Abu Dhabi’s more unique structures. Capital Gate then comes into view, one of the city’s most distinctive skyscrapers, boasting the world’s steepest incline. In a wonderful marriage of old and new, the journey takes in the gleaming towers and decorative domes of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. See one of the country’s most luxurious hotels from the air as a sweeping vista of the stunning Emirates Palace appears. Looping around, Yas Marina Circuit is the next attraction to appear below. This is where the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is staged each November. The 5.55-kilometre track winds around the picturesque Yas Marina and through the futuristic Yas Viceroy hotel. From here, the true scale of the blazing red Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is evident. Among its many accolades, it holds the record for the world’s largest roof at 200,000 square metres and the world’s largest Ferrari logo, which is 65 metres long and covers 3,000 square metres. As the plane makes its descent for a thrilling water landing, it’s one last chance to see Abu Dhabi’s pristine coastline before docking at Yas Island with a collection of extraordinary aerial photographs to treasure.

In the spotlight As Abu Dhabi prepares to host a line-up of global superstars on stage over the coming weeks, Concierge looks at the city’s budding reputation as a major stop on the international concert circuit

The atmosphere at du Arena on a concert day is electric. As the 25,000-strong crowd piles through the gates, eager to welcome another international star to the city, it’s impossible not to get swept up in the excitement. For each event, huge funds are channelled into securing a big-name performer with enough star quality to appeal to the city’s diverse audience base and attract fans from across the region to fly in and witness the show. Usually, it will be an artist’s debut appearance in the UAE and more often than not their first performance in the Middle East as a whole. As more and more high-profile artists pick the UAE capital to launch themselves in the region, it’s clear that Abu Dhabi’s musical star is rising and the city is well on its way to becoming a major destination for top-tier musicians on tour. It’s not just about selling tickets, however. Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning concert scene feeds a larger aim to develop the emirate’s music industry, which in turn, is all part of the overriding plan to transform the UAE capital in a regional hub for arts and culture and drive more visitors to the city in doing so. “Music is a hugely important part of the arts and culture scene and so needs to be developed and allowed to mature,” says Mohammed Al Daheri, director of strategy and policy at Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). “Having well-known names helps to raise Abu Dhabi’s profile regionally and internationally and attract more people to the emirate where they then realise there is much to see and do.” ‘Big ticket’ concerts have been a major driver behind this emerging music tourism market, agrees Mike Fairburn, vice president of marketing and communications at Flash Entertainment, one of the capital’s largest event organisers. “We see a lot of people now flying in for shows. Metallica, in particular, attracted rockers from around the region to Abu Dhabi. It’s a really important aspect of what we do because it supports TCA Abu Dhabi’s initiatives with regards to other types of tourism,” he explains.

capital on October 19. Following her are classical superstars, José Carreras and Katherine Jenkins, who will take the stage at du Arena on October 25. The month will close with the first of the much-anticipated Yasalam after-race concerts, which run each year alongside the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This is one of the highlights of Abu Dhabi’s musical calendar. Four days of concerts – featuring a line-up of local and international superstars – held in conjunction with the biggest social and sporting event of the year. It’s one

of several factors that makes tickets to the high-profile event so widely soughtafter. “Abu Dhabi is unique in that it is the only Formula 1 race location where concert entry is reserved exclusively for F1 ticket-holders,” says Fairburn. “The concerts are part of what makes this event so outstanding. The F1 industry now views Abu Dhabi as the big meeting outside the traditional bastion of Monaco and I don’t see anywhere else that runs a singly co-ordinated programme as diverse as the one we have here. All the different agencies, Flash, Etihad, YMC, TCA Abu Dhabi and many others, come together to stage the event and we are extremely proud of the results,” he continues, adding that the customer satisfaction surveys always top 90 percent. This year, the weekend’s musical festivities will kick off with Arabian artists on the Thursday followed by American rapper, Jay Z, who will be making his UAE debut on Friday November 1. Saturday night will bring English rock band, Muse to the du Arena stage and performing in the coveted Sunday spot – after the grand prix – is ’80s synth-pop pioneer, Depeche Mode. The British band, which released its 13th album, Delta Machine in March this year, is currently in the middle of a global tour and will kick off the winter leg with the headline performance in the UAE capital. “It’s great timing for us and a good opportunity to have a few days off before we start the European dates. The whole

Few people in the UAE capital have not heard of Flash. The company, which has just celebrated its five-year anniversary, is a guiding force behind the emirate’s burgeoning music industry and organises the majority of major concerts held in the capital. Over the years, it has brought over a steady stream of musical heavyweights, including Madonna, Metallica, Snoop Dogg, Eric Clapton, Prince, Sting, Eminem, Thirty Seconds to Mars (pictured on previous page) and Elton John, to name a few and is currently busy preparing for a wave of winter performances beginning this month. First on stage is Barbadian songstress, Rihanna, who will perform in the UAE

weekend is going to be fantastic. I’ve heard that the hotels are brilliant in Abu Dhabi so we’re really looking forward to getting there, relaxing and taking advantage of the five-star facilities,” keyboardist and founding band member Andy Fletcher told Concierge in an exclusive interview. This will be the band’s first gig in the emirate and they are anticipating something special. “We play big festivals all year round but rarely get the opportunity to perform at major events. I think this is a bit of a oneoff,” he says, adding that high-profile events don’t often go hand in hand with large-scale concerts. “There is going to be this tremendous buzz. We’re really, really excited.” Another part of Abu Dhabi’s appeal to seasoned international performers such as Depeche Mode is the novelty value of

playing in an up-and-coming destination. In recent years, the UAE capital has cropped up on a number of touring schedules and is rapidly becoming a regular stop for bigname artists passing between Europe and Asia. According to Fairburn: “Our track record shows that Abu Dhabi is an increasingly important destination for musicians on tour. Something like 80 percent of the big-arena shows Flash has hosted have been artists on tours. “There is certainly no lack of enthusiasm from artists looking to come and perform here,” he continues, adding that it is not just the global superstars looking to notch up a

date in the capital. “We’ve organised an awful lot of concerts with local and regional artists as well. Abu Dhabi has an extremely broad audience base so we get to put these great, multi-cultural line-ups on.” The Beats on the Beach festival is a classic example. The free concerts take place on the Corniche Public Beach and attract a rich cross-section of UAE society from local families and women in niqabs to expat teenagers and labourers enjoying a night off. The programme is a reflection of the crowd. Well-known Lebanese divas and Filipino pop bands are a regular feature, as are Indian sitar players and western rap artists.

However, it’s not all about big names here. An important aspect of this event and of Flash’s work as a whole, Fairburn says, is to provide a platform for local and regional talent. “As an entertainment company, we’re extremely committed to providing a platform for young talent and there’s a lot here – that’s what I’ve noticed in the past few years since we really started to push the mandate harder.” Other major initiatives and organisations, notably the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, organiser of the Abu Dhabi Festival – the annual classical arts extravaganza – are equally committed to nurturing young talent, which is gradually beginning to make its

56

presence felt. As Al Daheri points out: “There has been a growing maturity over the last few years in Abu Dhabi’s music scene with major stars from all parts of the industry, from Metallica and Coldplay to Andrea Bocelli and Gilberto Gil, flying in to play to varied audiences. Yet we are also seeing more local and regional stars emerging, such as Emirati singing sensation and X-Factor Arabia judge, Hussaim Al Jassmi, Saudi Arabian singer Rabeh Saqer, Egyptian singer Tamer Hosny and Lebanese starlet, Yara, who recently wowed at Summerfest Abu Dhabi. Now we would like to see more grass roots promoters and talent break through to diversify the scene even further.”

Seaside sanctuary A day in the sun is no ordinary experience at Abu Dhabi’s five-star beach clubs where guests are invited to enjoy the best that life can offer

The sun is high is the sky as a soft breeze whistles in from the sea offering a welcome rush of cool air in the midday heat. Above, palm leaves rustle gently, allowing the sunlight to stream through for a few seconds before the wind drops and the green canopy is restored. In the background, waiters bustle by bearing trays of coconut smoothie shots and icecold face towels while others escort guests to sun loungers or pause to take a lunch order. For those who appreciate the finer things in life, there can be few more relaxing places to spend an afternoon than poolside at Emirates Palace. This is a beach club in the traditional sense – an exclusive arena, in which to unwind and enjoy an environment far removed from the stresses of everyday life. Here, all sense of pressure and responsibility evaporates into the balmy air on entry to be replaced by the blissful ease that comes from marrying five-star service to a beautiful setting. Elsewhere in Abu Dhabi, variations on this luxurious experience are offered by other exclusive beach clubs, many of which are attached to the city’s five-star hotels. A few are standalone venues, such as The Club, which has been going strong since 1962 and has the distinction of being one of the city’s longest-running leisure destinations. A more recent addition is the Monte-Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat – the famous hospitality brand’s first facility outside Monaco. Here, the young and trendy pose on yellowand-white-striped sun beds, sipping cocktails and taking the occasional dip in an enormous swimming pool that stretches down to the beach. Take a look at these exclusive worlds and discover the highlights of each in our pick of the city’s most luxurious beach clubs.

Fashion emporium Adding serious clout to Abu Dhabi’s increasingly well-stocked shopping scene, The Galleria mall brings style, luxury and exclusivity to Al Maryah Island Words by

Celine, Moschino, Tory Burch, Berluti, Jimmy Choo, Mulberry, Mark Jacobs. These are just some of the international brands that have chosen The Galleria as their launch pad onto the Abu Dhabi retail market. Bolstered by the presence of the world’s leading fashion houses, not to mention an outstanding selection of gourmet dining venues, the new mall, which is situated at the heart of the up-and-coming business district on Al Maryah Island, confirms the capital’s status as a major shopping destination in the region. In addition to the numerous high-end designers that have made debut appearances at The Galleria are many other already-established luxury brands that have bagged a spot in this prestigious new mall. The city’s first freestanding Jimmy Choo store, the brand’s third in the UAE, can be found here alongside Bulgari’s second boutique in the capital and the largest Cartier store in Abu Dhabi. The enormous boutique, says Laurent Gaborit, regional director of Cartier is “a new expression of the quintessential Cartier brand image and heritage”. “It is much more than just a boutique, more than interior, more than retail. The new Cartier boutique is exactly how French architect Bruno Moinard describes it: ‘a spirit, a state of mind, a decoration, a style and environment’.” A number of boutiques have been designed specifically with the VIP shopper in mind. The anchor Louis Vuitton store has an entire level dedicated to private shopping while Bulgari boasts a 1,861-square-foot VIP room for private appointments along with a whole area dedicated to watches, plus displays of one-of-a-kind precious jewels. This feeling of exclusivity and luxury is continued throughout the mall, right through to the dedicated private valet parking entrance.

Perhaps the most exciting element for UAE luxury hunters is the sheer number of exclusive items on display throughout the mall. Almost every boutique stocks one-off creations or designs that can only be found in The Galleria, such as a classic Moschino bag in a shade exclusive to the mall or the new Alexander McQueen bat-shaped clutch in teal. Some brands have even released items directly tailored towards the local market such as Thomas Pink’s monogrammed polo shirts in navy and pink that feature the name of the city emblazoned across the chest. Meanwhile, Montblanc created a range of limited edition watches and pens including the dazzling ruby and diamond-studded Montblanc Ruby Fountain Pen, a one-of-a-kind piece valued at about AED4.2 million. Emphasising the key positioning of the brand’s boutique at The Galleria, Maxime Harrar, regional director of Montblanc Middle East, says: “The boutique will showcase the Limited Edition Montblanc Flag pen, which has been created to celebrate the UAE as well as the latest additions to the exquisite fine-jewellery Princesse Grace

de Monaco Collection and the Montblanc Starwalker World Time GMT Automatic timepiece. The Galleria boutique will also be one of the first to showcase the Montblanc Heritage Collection 1912.” With over 130 competing retail outlets set across two levels, brands have paid special attention to heightening their visual appeal. In order to complement the highly stylised mall with its striking sculptural atrium roof, many stores have produced stunning visual interiors that create a dramatic impact. Montblanc, for example, has taken advantage of its location next to the pool with a floor-to-ceiling window in place of the back wall, bathing the store in natural light. Emilio Pucci looks to its Italian roots with a concept inspired by the palazzos of Italy. Architect Joesph Dirand contrasts purple-veined Breccia dei Medici marble and antique rose draperies with gold art deco mirrors and abstract prints to create classic glamour with a contemporary punch. Alexander McQueen displays a modern concept designed by creative director Sarah Burton. Bespoke panelling covered in feathers, shells, cactus flowers and

seahorses are complemented by blush-pink lighting and velvet soft furnishings to create a feminine feel, while aged brass finishings add a touch of charm. In addition, several top-tier brands have brought their new international store designs to the UAE for the first time, adding to the pioneering nature of The Galleria. Italian fashion house Moschino presents a novel concept created by renowned architect Michele de Lucchi in collaboration with creative director Rossella Jardini while Juicy Couture also renews its store concept for UAE customers with a more upmarket feel. For many stores, the emphasis is being placed on appealing to fashion-forward customers by creating dazzling interiors and stocking shelves with the latest collections from overseas.

Mathew Donnelly, brand director of locally based retail company Majid Al Futtaim Fashion says: “The brand-savvy young adult is a huge part of the thriving consumer market in the region and one which Majid Al Futtaim Fashion always has at the forefront of its mind. The range of brands, coupled with the enticing surroundings of the mall itself, lend themselves to this sector perfectly with high-end fashion houses such as Juicy Couture offering upmarket pieces to fashion-conscious young females.” For others brands, the aim is to target business people. Al Maryah Island is set to be the capital’s Central Business District and so fashion houses such as Thomas Pink and Coach have jumped at this opportunity. “The Galleria at Sowwah Square has meticulously orchestrated a group of brands and restaurants that will change the dynamic of Abu Dhabi’s shopping and culinary experience. Coach wanted to be at the heart of this new experience for both locals and tourists,” says Ian Bickley, president, international group, Coach. Jonathan Heilbron, Thomas Pink CEO and president, says: “We see a lot of potential for our brand, with frequent business travellers to the capital and those working in the Stock Exchange and businesses in and around Al Maryah Island. We expect our informal range of shirts and polos to

be popular with the local residents and the Traveller range is perfect for people that move from city to city a lot on business.” It’s not just fashion either. The Galleria is a complete lifestyle destination with numerous gourmet restaurants and two luxury hotels connected to the complex. Shoppers can dine at eateries such as Emporio Armani Caffé, Robertos and Zuma – all of which have made their Abu Dhabi debut here, while visitors who come from further afield and want easy access to the destination can book into the on-site Rosewood hotel, which will soon be joined by a new Four Seasons nearby on Al Maryah Island. opened its doors earlier this year, offers direct access to the mall via a covered and air-conditioned walkway and is very much in tune with its fashionable address. Staff are attired in sleek uniforms created by Italian designer Domenico Vacca and the venue’s numerous sophisticated bar and dining venues are set to host a series of major fashion events from The Galleria launch parties to catwalk shows and VIP soirées. With tourism in Abu Dhabi expected to grow to 4.9 million visitors annually by 2020, businesses and brands are viewing the emirate as an important place to make their presence felt in the Middle East. Over the coming years, the retail landscape will expand further as more and more malls open up across the city, including Yas Mall, Deerfields Town Square and The Collection at Saadiyat. At the moment, however, the spotlight is on The Galleria and the many new designer faces it brings to the capital.

Timeless design Baume & Mercier has maintained its niche in the market for 183 years by embracing the future and producing models that endure across the ages

In 1869, Louis Victor Baume gave his daughter Mélina an unusual gift to mark her first communion. The delicate gold pocket watch, intricately engraved with a swirling f loral motif, was a surprising choice for a young girl, particularly coming from a watchmaker who would have been more aware than most that women’s watches were out of the ordinary. At the time, it was still commonly held that middle and upper class women had no need to concern themselves with the hour and as a result feminine designs from this era are extremely rare. This makes Mélina’s heirloom piece, now kept in the Baume & Mercier headquarters in Switzerland, all the more exotic and precious. Baume’s enlightened approach set an early precedent for the young watch company, then known as Frères Baume and co-managed by Louis and his brother Joseph-Célestin. The family had initially set up shop in 1830 in Jura – the horological heart of Switzerland – but quickly expanded overseas, taking the company’s designs across the British Empire, through India, Singapore, Africa and beyond, carrying with it the company motto “Accept only perfection. Only manufacture watches of the highest quality”. By the time Baume watches took its next major step in the direction of timekeeping for females, it was an international brand with branches in countries around the world and a solid reputation as a purveyor of quality watches.

That was in 1920, when World War I had swept away the old order and given rise to a new social structure that saw women embrace new freedoms and enjoy a more independent way of life. The modern 1920s female bore a stark contrast to her pre-war counterpart in everything from fashion to occupation and the more forward-thinking luxury brands of the era were quick to accommodate this shift. Leading the way was Baume watches, which became Baume & Mercier Maison D’Horlogerie in 1918, with its elegant Baignoire jewellery timepiece created specifically for women. The elegant model was ahead of its time in another sense too. Up to this point, pocket watches had been the timekeeping instrument of choice but the miniaturisation of movements for military wristwatches in the war had opened an entirely new chapter in horological design. Baume & Mercier was one of the first to take up the mantle and produce wristwatch designs for men and women. Not surprisingly, the brand considers this one of the major turning points in its 183-year history. “Very early on, Baume & Mercier established its vision for females with elegant collections dedicated to women,” says Alexandre Peraldi, design director at the brand.

After the Baignoire came another landmark model, the Marquise, which Peraldi describes as being at the forefront of women’s watches at the time. Launched in 1946, it was another post-war watch that responded to the demands of a new era with its clean design and simple elegance. It remained a bestseller until the early 1960s and consolidated Baume & Mercier’s reputation as a leader in ladies’ jewellery watches. Of course, the brand, which had begun life as a manufacturer of timepieces for men, continued to place a heavy focus on masculine designs throughout this period. The 1950s witnessed the boom of the chronograph and of larger models to accommodate it. Baume & Mercier used this as an opportunity to incorporate adorned technical dials into its designs – a factor that remains present in its modern-day collections. The brand’s 2013 release for men, the elegant Clifton watch is the most obvious example. Inspired by the clean lines and elegance of the company’s ’50s designs, it is a modern interpretation of a classic concept. The cornerstone of the collection is the Clifton 1830 model, which references the brand’s founding year. Describing it as “the most accurate interpretation of the historical model” and an “archetypical urban timepiece”, Baume & Mercier has positioned this as a watch for purists.

Other models include the Clifton Automatic designs, which have a more contemporary feel and incorporate two moon-phase watches with silver or blue dials. This line, Peraldi believes, will become the landmark collection in the UAE, following on from the Classima GMT, which offers a dual time function and is among the most popular pieces in the region. Clifton watches have the combination of form and function that local shoppers are looking for, he continues. “The UAE clientele is made up of connoisseurs looking for details. Shoppers here appreciate classic design characteristics with a level of technical innovation as well. These days, they are becoming more and more concerned with the mechanical workings of timepieces.” For UAE women, the Linea collection, first launched in 1987, has been especially popular. Peraldi explains: “This one is easy to wear and has been a best seller thanks to its timeless elegance, style and femininity. The hallmark interchangeable strap concept allows wearers to change the strap to suit their moods or outfits. Based on its success, we have decided to launch the ceramic Linea, a design exclusive to the Middle East.” This is the first-ever ceramic piece to be crafted by the maison and is limited to 150 pieces.

The model caused a sensation when it was released 26 years ago. “Linea reinvented watches for women. The unusual shape, wide dial and the way in which the strap integrated aesthetically with the case in a fluid line made it ultra-feminine,” says Peraldi. The tendency at the time in women’s watches was simply to create a smaller version of masculine designs and label them the feminine model, so the fact that Linea was designed exclusively for women was a large factor in the model’s success. Today, the collection is represented by Canadian actress, Emmanuelle Chriqui, who Peraldi describes as the “perfect match” for the feminine watch. She is one of various famous faces that have represented Baume & Mercier in the public eye, alongside former brand ambassadors, Gwyneth Paltrow and William Baldwin. The role of these celebrity associates is not simply to model the watches on the red carpet. “It is a natural relationship based on sharing certain 6

fundamental values such as authenticity, quality and tradition,” Peraldi explains. These traits are extremely important to Baume & Mercier, which prides itself on providing watches that are comfortable, affordable and most of all, timeless. “We aim to create watches that stand the test of time and to do this we must first and foremost pay careful attention to detail,” Peraldi says. The model that endures across the ages must be simple and without unnecessary embellishment, he continues. It should be discreet on the eye and feel seamless on the wrist with materials and finishing touches carefully selected to promote these aims and extravagant shapes or colours avoided at all costs. These are the themes that run across all Baume & Mercier models, from the early Marquise and Clifton collections through to the more recently launched Hampton and Diamont designs. It is important, stresses Peraldi, that every one of these designs conforms to the brand’s code of

providing elegant and classical watches equipped with the latest technical innovations and retailed at affordable prices. These, he says, are the characteristics that Baume & Mercier has long been known for. Another is longevity and commitment to tradition. An essence of the past can be discerned in the solidity and careful craftsmanship of all Baume & Mercier watches, which must maintain a strong link with the brand’s history and heritage while simultaneously remaining at the helm of horological innovation. This, says Peraldi, is the responsibility that falls on the shoulders of Baume & Mercier’s designers and technicians who, once more working from a factory in the brand’s Jura homeland, follow in the footsteps of its early craftsmen, who set new standards in watchmaking and paved the way for female and middle class timekeepers in the market for a luxury Swiss timepiece.

Star quality From on-screen glamour to off-screen inspiration, Concierge explores why the film and jewellery industries will forever be inextricably linked Words by

rachel Ingram

Designer jewels have long gone hand in hand with Hollywood. Earlier this year, Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher were among the The Great Gatsby stars to don a range of bespoke art deco-style creations made especially for the film by luxury jewellery house Tiffany & Co. The brand has a longstanding affiliation with Hollywood’s leading ladies and famously counts ’60s actress Audrey Hepburn among its early ambassadors. Other actresses of the day had similar ties with leading jewellery houses, most notably Elizabeth Taylor, whose large Bulgari collection was recently bought back by the brand for a vast sum. As the seventh annual Abu Dhabi Film Festival prepares to open on October 24, Concierge explores brand affiliations with movies and their glamorous protagonists both on and off our screens.

Whether featured in movies, inspired by stars or worn by celebrities, jewellery lights up the silver screen and dazzles in a way that only an association with fame and fortune can. Film appearances can have profound affects on brands and even help shape identities. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the representation of Tiffany & Co. in Hollywood classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Audrey Hepburn’s performance as eccentric Holly Golightly cemented the brand’s position in Hollywood and has continued to enhance the image ever since. The luxury jeweller recently celebrated the relationship between fashion and film through a display of its most famous pieces, some of which were brought to the UAE earlier this year. “Hollywood and film continue to play a significant role in setting trends for style and glamour and the heritage collection helps to convey Tiffany & Co.’s long-standing links with these industries,” said Linda Buckley, vice president of international public relations. Tiffany & Co. designers turned to old sketches and models housed in the

brand’s heritage collection to create the elaborate, diamond-studded pieces worn by actresses in The Great Gatsby and available as part of a jazz age-inspired range called The Great Gatsby Collection. “The jewellery symbolises the story’s themes of wealth and privilege and we approached its design with the utmost style and luxury in mind,” said Jon King, executive vice president of Tiffany & Co. Costume designer, Catherine Martin adds that having such exquisite jewellery pieces adds to the characters’

visual development and helps immerse the actors in the world of the person they are portraying. Tiffany & Co. is by no means alone in using highprofile films as a vehicle to display and publicise its designs. With the release of almost every hit movie, major brands vie for a slice of the star-studded action. In September this year, the long-awaited premiere of Diana was aired featuring the actress Naomi Watts as the late Princess Diana dripping in Chopard jewellery during key scenes. The Swiss-based luxury watch and jewellery company produced exact replicas of the highly coveted royal Windsor collection for the movie, including tiaras, diamond necklaces, ruby bracelets and the Princess of Wales’ sapphire engagement ring, the original of which is now worn by The Duchess of Cambridge. Another brand appreciating the allure of the silver screen is Van Cleef & Arpels. The luxury jeweller recently provided stunning pieces for the royal characters in two impressive film titles: Mirror Mirror and The King’s Speech. In Mirror Mirror, Lily Collins and Julia Roberts, who play Snow White and the Queen, respectively, wore a grand platinum tiara featuring 77.34 carats of round, pear-shaped and marquise-cut diamonds. Meanwhile, in The King’s Speech, the Duchess of Windsor is seen commissioning the renowned Van Cleef & Arpels Zip necklace, a piece that marked a major moment in the brand’s history.

It’s not only women’s luxury accessories that attract big name brands. Dunhill has been linked with the James Bond film series for many years, providing accessories such as cufflinks in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies and a lighter in the 1989 movie Licence to Kill. Luxury crystal brand Swarovski also collaborated with the series by creating a Skyfall collection of four pieces inspired by the movie, worn on screen by Bond girl Severine, played by Bérénice Marlohe. The same items were available to buy in store. This December will bring another Hollywood and haute jewellery house collaboration when Nicole Kidman takes to the screen in Cartier jewels to play Princess Grace of Monaco. Grace Kelly (her official name was Grace, Princess of Monaco) first entered the public arena as a style

icon, known for her passion for Parisian jewellery. Her favourite brand was Cartier and her husband, Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, gave her many custom-made pieces throughout their marriage, including her 10.47-carat emeraldcut diamond engagement ring. As such, Cartier was the natural partner for this film project and the brand created exact reproductions of Kelly’s favourite Cartier pieces worn by Kidman throughout the biopic. Rather than creating jewellery to be worn on screen, some brands take a different route and forge a link with Hollywood by paying tribute to stars through limited edition collections. To this day Grace Kelly continues to be a muse. Last year, Montblanc unveiled a tribute to the late princess with the Collection Princesse Grace de Monaco, a range of jewellery, watches and writing implements. Montblanc creative director, Carlo Giordanetti, revealed that this capsule collection was actually the idea of Kelly’s son, Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco and the pair worked together to design each piece.

Similarly, last year S.T. Dupont launched the Night Symphony collection inspired by Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart to mark the brand’s 140th anniversary. Explaining the brand’s choice to represent such an important occasion, Alain Crevet, President of S.T. Dupont, said: “I wanted something very special. At Mr Dupont’s house I found a big book of orders following all of the major clients from the 19th and 20th centuries. There were a lot of other celebrities but I think Audrey was the most amazing.” The collection, which features lighters, writing inplements, cufflinks and bags, coincided with the 60th anniversary of the release of Hepburn’s hit movie Roman Holiday and the 20th year since the actress’ passing. One silver screen heroine with a particularly famous love of high jewellery was Elizabeth Taylor. Her collection was vast, encompassing a wide range of Serpenti bracelets, dazzling chains of pearls and, of course, the magnificent green emerald necklace given to her by Richard Burton, her fifth and seventh husband. So great was the actress’ influence in her heyday that photographer Gianni Bozzacchi revealed on the set of Ash Wednesday in 1973: “Elizabeth needed something more and she asked for Bulgari pearls. Gianni Bulgari delivered them personally.” This led to the famous photo of the actress gazing out from behind a string of pearls held across her face and in return gave Bulgari huge exposure.

The value of iconic shots like this is immeasurable for brands, who will send statement pieces to actresses ahead of premiers in the hopes of seeing them on the red carpet. In 2011, as a celebration of this relationship, Bulgari spent around US$20 million buying back pieces that it had sold to Taylor in the ’60s and ’70s in order to put together an exhibition that toured the world, including a stop in Abu Dhabi. At the Venice Film Festival in August, Bulgari launched the Diva collection – a range of over 200 gem-studded creations inspired by movie-star fans of the brand such as Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. The collection draws on the parallels between film and fashion with high-jewellery pieces inspired by some of the famous women that have patronised the brand over the years. Calling on leading ladies from the Hollywood golden age and referencing the films they starred in, the collection calls to mind this era of glamour and stardom, reminding us of the enduring bond between iconic actresses and the wolrd’s leading jewellery houses. As Carla Bruni, the face of the campaign, said: “An item of jewellery is not like any other object. It is more intimate than anything else. From the simplest of rings to the most sophisticated necklace, an item of jewellery always has a personal story to tell.”

The grand tour Embark on an epicurean journey across Europe in Abu Dhabi’s multi-cultural restaurants and enjoy five-star cuisine from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and beyond

In previous centuries it was the custom for young men of privilege to undertake a lengthy trip across Europe on completing their studies. Known as the ‘grand tour,’ the experience was considered an educational rite of passage for those with ample means and allowed aristocratic families to furnish their sons with the necessary skills, knowledge and graces to take their place in society. The tour exposed them to the mores and manners of other cultures, furnishing them with a sophistication and polish that could only be gained by overseas travel. In an age where journeying from one country to another took weeks, or even months, these lengthy trips were a rare opportunity to sample the cuisines of other countries and then return to the drawing rooms and dining tables of their home country with an impressive understanding of the gastronomic customs in Italy, France and beyond. These days, the opposite is true. Diners can choose from the cuisines of the world within a single city and enjoy Italian spaghetti, Spanish paella and French steaks on consecutive nights of the week without travelling more than a few miles to each. Nowhere is this more true than in Abu Dhabi, where the rich variety of restaurants and cuisines offers access to some of the highest quality cooking available with dishes of a standard to rival that found in their countries of origin. Undertake a grand tour of Abu Dhabi’s top restaurants with our pick of the city’s finest European dining establishments.

French Bord Eau Walking into Bord Eau is like instantly stepping into a Parisian drawing room from the 19th century. Portraits of ballerinas in the style of French painter Degas adorn the walls on one side and on the other heavy curtains are looped back to expose tall French doors revealing stunning views. This part, however, is all Abu Dhabi with an uninterrupted panorama of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the lights of the city glistening across the water.

A thick carpet muffles the clack of high heels as diners make their way through the restaurant to white-clad tables. Soft background music sets the tone of Paris after dark in the early 1900s. The waiter escorts diners to their tables where everything has been kept simple, clean and chic – in line with contemporary French dining – and offers a glass of champagne to start while they leaf through the menu, which features a selection of gastronomic delights. The setting, atmosphere and décor may stand out but it is the cuisine that really puts Bord Eau on the culinary map. Head chef Alexandre Pernetta takes a creative approach to food but remains true to the ethos of gourmet French cooking at all times. His milk-fed lamb ‘two ways’ is impossibly tender and one bite of the Dover sole à la Grenobloise makes it easy to see why there is a pile of awards on the shelves by Bord Eau’s front desk. The interior perfectly captures the tasteful, understated opulence that still characterises the décor of many stately homes in Italy today. Ornate chandeliers and Renaissance-style paintings sit comfortably alongside the rustic dining tables and wooden wall panels, together creating a real sense of old Italy

that becomes even more apparent once the food is served. Chef Stefano Viola takes a traditional approach to cooking and serves seasonal dishes that are true to Tuscan cuisine. This is certainly the case at The Pool Deck where diners are invited to recline on comfortable sun lounges and sip fozen cocktails while selecting from the Greek-inspired menu. All the classics are here, including the trusty Greek salad and pitas stuffed with delicious filling, in addition to some more unusual culinary creations, some of them served on a salt brick to provide extra flavour and an exotic touch. Middle East on a plate from mezze to mohallabia, dining out Arab style in the UAE is an intriguing blend of culinary influences and ingredients from around the region Words by

CLAIrE MALCoLM

There’s much more to Arabic food than the ubiquitous bowl of hummus. In the UAE especially, culinary influences from across the Middle East offer a mouthwatering introduction to the region’s cuisine with an ever-growing number of Emirati restaurants alongside countless Lebanese, Syrian and Iranian eateries. The Gulf’s strategic location on the ancient trading route between East Africa and India brought with it fragrant influences in the form of aromatic spices such as cardamom, saffron, chilli, cloves and cumin, to transform the most basic foodstuffs into memorable meals. While GCC families subsisted on a monotonous diet of dates, wheat, barley, basmati rice, yoghurt and the occasional morsel of meat or fish just 50 years ago, today’s table is replete with fresh green salads, hot and cold mezze nibbles, all manner of grilled delights and tooth-achingly sweet desserts.

No blazer required Dining Arab style is a friendly affair and food is a time to relax with family and friends over a table groaning with tasty morsels. The Middle East is known for its warm hospitality and while meals are traditionally large family occasions, the same ambience spills over into the UAE’s diverse selection of Arabic restaurants, from streetside cafés to five-star signature venues. To Arabs, the level of courtesy and generosity shown towards a guest is a direct reflection of a person’s character and the custom of sharing food is ingrained in the culture here. The ample portions and endless supply of dishes at Arabic resturants in the UAE speak for themselvs as do the enormous menus and courtesy sides, such as bread, pickled vegetables and salad that automatically come with each meal.

For Hassan Kaouk, restaurant manager at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s Al Nafoorah, this style of service is a reflection of homegrown customs. “A guest is always welcome in your house and the owner will share the food from his own plate, so that’s why a lot of dishes are served family-style as it fosters closeness, hospitality and the joy of sharing. For Arab people, dining is an experience and not merely a necessity to survive,” he says. Abdel Qader Zaitoun, head chef at Barouk, the signature Lebanese restaurant in the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi, Yas Island, agrees. “In Lebanon family comes first and there is nothing better than having all the family sitting around a table and sharing the same food; plus it gives the cook freedom to create more than one dish,” he remarks.

Many visitors to the region are familiar with menu staples such as hummus and falafel, however the nuances of individual ingredients and combinations that define the culinary offering of a specific Middle Eastern country are harder to identify. “When we refer to Arabic food, we mean a collection of dishes representing different Arab countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, but Lebanese is the most popular in the region,” says Zaitoun. The ingredients used in the preparation of many classic Arabic dishes are relatively simple, but as he explains, the secret to creating something special is all about having the right combination of flavours. “For cold mezze dishes the most common ingredients are olive oil, lemon juice, sumac, nuts and tahina sauce, whereas for hot mezze we use fresh Arabic spices including cumin, coriander, cinnamon and paprika cooked with ghee,” he says.

“Lebanese cuisine is mostly based on grains like chick peas and lentils, vegetables including eggplant, onions, zucchini and tomatoes, plus the use of fresh herbs,” adds Zaitoun. Unlike most Western cuisines, cinnamon is often used in meat and other savoury dishes and when it comes to desserts, sweet and sinful is the name of the game with honey and rosewater-infused baklava sweets, rice puddings and nut-stuffed dough-based treats. One of the most popular is Umm Ali, a kind of Middle Eastern variation on the Western breadand-butter pudding. Rich and creamy, this indulgent dessert comes in varying forms according to different family recipes but it’s safe to assume that ordering a portion will provide a sweet and satisfying end to a meal.

“Try our Hummus Istambuly, Batenjen El Barouk (eggplant puree with walnuts and grenadine molasses) or our mixed kebab platter served with three delicious dips. My personal favourite dish is tabbouleh. This is a simple, classic Lebanese salad that goes with almost anything but tastes especially good with meat. It’s made from a mixture of parsley, mint, tomato, bulghur wheat, olive oil and lemon juice.”

Food and custom Every chef has their own favourite dish but the sheer number of dishes on any Arabic restaurant’s menu often overwhelms first-time visitors to the UAE. Kaouk recommends sticking to the classics such as hummus, fattoush salad (mixed salad dressed with sumac and pomegranate molasses), tabbouleh salad, lentil soup and the ever-popular mixed grill. Zaitoun also lists the endless variations on the mixed grill theme as a must-try: “I recommend a selection of cold and hot mezze appetisers including sautéed chicken livers and mouajanet (mixed savoury pastries) followed by a platter of charcoal-grilled lamb, kofta and chicken called machawi – there’s nothing better.” Coming together over good food in the Arab style also brings with it a number of customs that add a little something extra to the experience. “Olives and olive oil are always presented at the table, as well as freshly baked Arabic bread. There is also a plate of raw vegetables including lettuce, mint, carrots, cucumbers and onions for people to munch on before they order,” comments Kaouk. He recommends wrapping up the meal with a potent cup of Arabic coffee and a fragrant shisha pipe. Zaitoun also highlights the unique service style as a custom in itself, as he explains: “Just the act of sharing and presenting as many items as the table can fit is part of Arabic generosity.”

History in the making The earliest known habitation in this part of the world dates back as far as 5500 BCE. However, it was in 1971, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1966 to 2004, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990, set the wheels in motion with their neighbouring sheikhdoms, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman (Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972) to form an alliance.

The falcon is not only a national symbol of the UAE but a majestic bird that has played a significant role in the country's development. The impressive predators were crucial to early Bedouin life as they strived to carve out an existence in the harsh desert conditions. Falcons were trained to hunt for food. Teaching the birds was a fascinating process that saw a close bond form between handler and bird. The same is true today although the birds are used purely for sport. Annual falcon championships are hugely popular and sees falcons purchased and trained for the duration of the hunting season before the birds are once again returned to the wild. Today the importance of the falcon to UAE culture and history is seen in many examples as the bird is represented on banknotes, official documents, paintings and architecture.

IN THE kNOW: APPROPRIATE ATTIRE The UAE has a warm climate with year-round sun and very little rainfall. For most of the year, lightweight summer clothing is suitable, but on cooler winter evenings it can be advisable to take out a light jumper or cardigan. you may also want to have something slightly warmer to hand in the heavily air-conditioned shopping malls. Visitors are advised to show their respect for the local culture by dressing conservatively around the UAE. Swimwear may be worn on the beach and at hotel swimming pools, but take care to cover up before going into any public areas. There are no hard and fast rules that state how much skin a person may or may not display, but generally speaking it’s best to cover shoulders and thighs in public areas, particularly family attractions like shopping malls and parks.

WINING AND DINING

As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.

Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

{ A typical day for me starts at 8am with my morning rounds at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. This is the largest healthcare facility for these magnificent birds in the world and also houses a small animal wing with a pet hotel, care centre and the Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter. I begin by checking the birds in the hospital wards and reassess their medications then proceed to the examination room to attend those falcons that require advanced or complicated medical procedures. I may then also host a special tour of the facility for media or visitors. For most, seeing the falcons and exploring this facility is an unforgettable experience and the Arabian lunch we host in a traditional tent is the icing on the cake. This is one of several sites that offer visitors an insight into the dynamic at work in Abu Dhabi between the city’s vision for the future and the old Arabian traditions that underpin everyday life. It can also be witnessed on the Corniche, a bustling blend of old and new and the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand

My life in Abu Dhabi Dr Margit Muller, director of Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, discusses life in the UAE capital and her work with the country’s national bird

Mosque, the third-largest structure of its kind in the world. Visitors can also stop by the Sheikh Zayed Museum in Bateen which offers a rare insight into the life of the man that led this country into the 21st century or the Heritage Village where they can dive back into the past and learn more of the lives led by Bedouin tribes in the desert. Another of this city’s characterising features is the incredible array of excellent restaurants. One of my favourites is Adel Wahab in Souk Qaryat Al Beri. It serves authentic Lebanese food with dishes such as chicken liver in pomegranate which is especially delicious. Nearby, Shang Palace at Shangri-la, Qaryat Al Beri is a great option for Asian cuisine and Le Vendôme at Emirates Palace has a terrific view and is perfect for a smart meal. Abu Dhabi is also great for sports enthusiasts and I particularly recommend horse riding in the desert at sunset or sundown. It’s an incredibly peaceful and rewarding way to enjoy the natural beauty of the UAE.

“For most, seeing the falcons and exploring this facility is an unforgettable experience and the Arabian lunch we host in a traditional tent is the icing on the cake”
