Many times during the 2019–20 school year, we asked ourselves an essential question: What do we stand for? From September to February, we could see our meaning all around us, in all the wonderful, typical ways — senior chapels, the joyful buzz of the Stu-Fac, and the comfort of our campus routines and traditions in fall and winter. Then the world changed, and we wondered, what do we stand for now, as faces and voices on a screen, unable to be here together? This Report of Generosity & Volunteerism provides a welcome opportunity to reflect and make our answers visible to all. Teachers and advisors seeing and knowing their students as individual learners; Volunteers invested in creating a culture and the conditions to deliver the CA experience; A community engaged in vigorous activism to bring about positive change;

The following pages are a tangible demonstration of what happens when a school community joins together with conviction and purpose. The people who live CA’s mission show us how tomorrow can be better and different than today. Schools that make a lasting difference are led by people who put others first — people who believe that in sharing and in service, the fullness of life is realized. CA has always been a place where the support and gifts of many create singular, and rare, opportunities for each student. We are now on the cusp of ushering in a new century of learning and growth at CA. Thanks to your dedication and generosity, CA’s remarkable journey continues. hat motivates our work, our actions, our choices, our approach to education? We are here to challenge students to define themselves and pursue their truest potential. This is our purpose.

Every year, we build a community of very different individuals who come together with a shared understanding of what it means to be part of CA. We count on the creativity and compassion of our educators, and on the curiosity and conviction of our students.

During the 2019–20 school year, with our mission as our guide, students and teachers met the challenges of a sudden shift to distance learning amid a pandemic with flexibility and care. They reached out in new ways, developed solutions to bring our community closer, and turned the isolation of individual screens into opportunities for connection. We return again and again to this purpose, our north star. For it is in nurturing our students’ promise that we live up to CA’s highest values.

OUR MISSION

We are a community animated by love of learning, diverse and striving for equity, with common trust as our foundation. Honoring each individual, we challenge and expand our understanding of ourselves and the world through purposeful collaboration and creative engagement. We cultivate empathy, integrity, and responsibility to build a more just and sustainable future.

This was a year unlike any other. This year began with the hope of change, as students rallied in Boston to bring about a more sustainable future, and concluded in the devastating reality of a pandemic that changed the course for all schools in the spring. As we met the demands of the moment, closed our campus, and transitioned to emergency remote learning, we helped each other through unfamiliar territory. Staying true to the CA way, we focused not only on academics but also on the physical, social, and emotional well-being of every member of our community.

During the 2019–20 school year, CA benefited from countless acts of caring. Every day, we tapped into the positive energy generated by acts of kindness and connection. With each offering of an outstretched arm, we were reminded that the greatest reward comes from helping each other.

A VENUE FOR LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP CA’s Model United Nations conference is always a labor of love. This spring, a remarkable pivot to a virtual conference engaged over 100 delegates from 18 schools.

VOLUNTEER LEADERS Hundreds of volunteers from across the globe serve CA in a wide variety of important roles. During the 2019–20 school year, an extraordinary group of leaders guided meaningful work with wisdom, heart, and skill. THE 2019–20 ANNUAL FUND

CA’S ANNUAL FUND KEEPS OUR SCHOOL WHOLE AND STRONG

e are a community that strives to see, serve, and encourage each student for who they are and who they can become. We approach each day, class, rehearsal,

lab, and practice with the belief that, given the resources to learn, everyone who is part of CA has the ability to lead. In supporting this promise, we take a leap of faith every year, knowing that tuition revenue and the draw from our endowment will not cover all of CA’s fundamental expenses. We count on the Annual Fund to fill the gap. During the 2019–20 school year, 1,553 donors contributed generously to create the conditions necessary for CA students to thrive. he Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel is a place we all know, understand, and believe in. Moved from Barnstead, N.H., and reconstructed, piece by piece, at the center of our campus, the Chapel is the heart of our school. Honoring the incredible work involved in this rebuilding, these giving circles recognize our loyal annual donors, as well as the Annual Fund’s importance as a cornerstone for our community.

Steeple Raisers $10 , 0 0 0 –$24 , 999 In October 1961, the steeple was added to honor all whose memory lives on at Concord Academy.

Movers $1–$1 ,92 1 The first step in bringing the Chapel to CA was moving it, board by board and beam by beam, from Barnstead, N.H., to Concord.

It was work characterized by many small steps that made up a whole. Members of this circle make important gifts that, together, move CA forward.

Once at CA, the Chapel had to be rebuilt.

Young alumnae/i in our Senior Steps Circle demonstrate their belief in the value of a CA education and inspire a new generation of support for CA.

A site was chosen between the river’s edge and the Academy lawn, and reconstruction began. Much like the original builders, today’s Framers strengthen the work of the Movers, constructing an important framework for success.

Heartwood Society Carvers $5,000– $9,999 CA’s use of the Chapel began in May 1957.

To do something about “that empty feeling up front,” 20 girls, under Molly Gregory’s tutelage, created the carvings we know so well. Through their generosity, our Carvers transform the Annual Fund with gifts that allow students to create their own unique CA journeys.

P L AN N E D G I V I N G In June 1957, the carving of verses 1 through 8 of Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians was installed in the Chapel.

Over the course of a year, students had chiseled each letter in pine heartwood, taken from the dense inner core of the tree. Strong and particularly resistant, this material ensured that these words would remain a fixture at CA. Our Heartwood Society members have named Concord Academy in their estate plans or made planned gifts or bequests to the school, preserving their belief in CA’s mission and extending their support into the school’s next century.

Reunion Reflection and Generosity As a member of her class’s 50th reunion committee, Susan Bastress ’70 spent much of the year talking to classmates and friends about their individual and collective experiences at Concord Academy. She found these conversations illuminating, and as she began to think about her own time at the school, it became clear to Susan that her education at CA had provided an early foundation for both professional and personal success. Reimagining Commencement in a Virtual World With a background in theater and theater technology, Greg Jutkiewicz, CA’s director of summer programs, is no stranger to putting on a show. As a member of Concord Academy’s Baccalaureate & Commencement 2020 Planning Committee, though, he knew that CA’s first virtual commencement ceremony would be different. “We wanted to preserve some of the special traditions of this ceremony, and also add some features that would be unique for these circumstances,” he says. They were committed to including the seniors in the process. “We found out what was most important to them and then knew we had to figure out a way to do it,” Greg says. For the graduating class, this meant being “shoulder to shoulder” in a virtual space, celebrating their accomplishments as a group.

On May 29, the production combined recorded and livestreamed addresses — including a commencement speech from Ambassador Samantha Power on the Chapel lawn — with still images, recorded musical tributes, and a separate Zoom room for seniors and their families. Each member of the class of 2020 was present via video feed, sharing their joy with their classmates and all who were watching.

THE VISION FOR CA’S SECOND CENTURY

n October 4, 2019, the Board of Trustees and the Centennial Campaign Steering Committee gathered in the Dance Studio to affirm the vision and aspirations that will carry CA into its second century.

Campaign investments in capital projects and programmatic initiatives over the past several years have placed CA on a path to live its mission to the fullest.

This year, CA’s leadership confirmed the culminating chapter of this monumental effort, committing to two capstone initiatives that are central to CA’s purpose: strengthening CA’s endowment and unifying CA’s campus with the creation of a new performing arts facility. Thank you to all who are part of this movement — you are making progress possible for CA’s students, who need every one of us behind them.

CA HOUSES

Bringing Everyone at CA to the Table Last year’s renovations to the common rooms in every residential house, made possible by campaign contributions, revitalized these shared spaces central to the CA experience.

In the fall and winter, it was rare to find these well-appointed rooms empty. House gatherings for fun and food were an evening staple, with board games and even a pingpong table that rotated among the houses. Later at night, the spacious seating areas allowed students to spread projects out on tables and collaborate, or study quietly with house faculty on duty to help. On weekends, the houses opened to the entire community for friendly baking competitions, sushimaking, homemade bagels, gardening demonstrations, and pumpkin-carving, among many organized activities. The kitchens were always open for students and house faculty to share family recipes or try something new.

The new common rooms also made excellent classrooms for courses such as Susan Flink’s Chemistry of Cooking. And they served as the perfect locations for several school events, including a campus visit by 2020 Centennial Hall Fellow Anita Lo ’84, who shared with the CA community her experiences as a chef and longtime owner of the Michelinstarred New York City restaurant Annisa — along with her delicious cauliflower chaat.

During one session, historian and former faculty member Lucille Stott and CA history teacher Ed Rafferty P’19 ’21 spoke in Bailey Commons about the impressive people and events connected with these familiar places where we now live and learn.

CA Houses Unlocked In October 2019, Concord Academy hosted “CA Houses Unlocked,” a day of events celebrating the completion of the two-year CA Houses initiative.

In the 19th century, Concord was home to abolitionists such as Mary Merrick Brooks and hosted supporters of the Underground Railroad — Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and William Lloyd Garrison. Many families living along Main Street at the time were active in antislavery efforts. Grounding us in the history of the town, and of the buildings that now make up CA, was a reminder that our community is itself an effort to create a just space — to live in the world as we want the world to be.

Inspired by a discussion during their 40th reunion celebration in 2015, members of CA’s class of 1975 set out to raise support for CA’s African American and Latinx students.

Five years later, their dedicated efforts have led to the creation of the Concord Academy Opportunity Fund, a permanent endowment supported by 28 members of the class. During the 2019–20 academic year, income from this fund aided a current CA student who was drastically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to cover expenses ranging from access to high-speed internet to dress clothes for college interviews. Led by Nancy Gillespie ’75, Margaret Richey Hauge ’75, Karen McAlmon ’75, and Jacqueline van der Horst Sergent ’75, the class remains committed to increasing participation in this valuable resource for CA. “We know that reducing barriers to educational and economic opportunities can decisively improve both individual as well as community and national outcomes,” Nancy says, adding that today “the need… seems more urgent than ever.”

Tuition doesn’t cover the full cost of a CA education for any student. Each year, we fill the gap through our Annual Fund and investment income from our endowment.

At a school where boarding tuition nearly equals the median U.S. household income, we consider deeply how our commitment to equity translates into action. Our financial aid model insists on experiential equity for all of our students, offering 26 percent of CA families comprehensive grants based on their actual needs. We do this so that students receiving financial assistance don’t have to worry whether they can afford their team gear, join their friends at the movies, or take part in school-sponsored trips. In a year filled with unexpected challenges, as students suddenly had to connect to CA from homes around the world to continue learning in the spring, we were able to provide financial aid to remove critical barriers to access. We increased access to technology and helped defray related expenses, all in an effort to deliver an equitable experience to CA students. As a small independent school, we are not alone in having a long road to travel toward that goal. Now more than ever, we believe that CA’s mission calls on us to take every step possible to move in this clear direction.

Department X Supports Creative Teaching Approaches English teacher Kirsten Hoyte is used to having her students think outside the standard “read-analyze-write” method of studying literature. She wants them to love reading — the more ways they experience stories and storytelling, the better. When she received Department X endowed faculty support to redesign a course, Digital Stories: Oral Traditions and Interactive Fiction, she trained in the responsive, real-time audiovisual software Isadora. Using motion detection, her students are able to interact with images, sounds, and text in sophisticated ways, then write about and reflect on the process of inhabiting a text. Hoyte says, “I saw in some students a freedom and confidence that I had not previously seen in the classroom.”

The 1619 Project and CA Every student takes many history classes at CA, though no particular courses are required, “because one history is not more important than any other,” says history faculty member Stephanie Manzella P’14 ’17 ’18. There are boundless ways for students to learn about the enduring influence of the past, in depth and in action.

In November, students in a new evening seminar led by Manzella addressed the entire school as well as the extended CA community. The course, The 1619 Project: Confronting Slavery, drew on New York Times Magazine’s 1619 Project, a major initiative to reframe American history by focusing on the enduring consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans. In an all-school assembly, students presented about the undemocratic features of the U.S. government, African Americans’ exclusion from the fields of medicine and health care, and racialized fear and violence in the criminal justice system. An evening panel discussion with Evelynn Hammonds P’21, chair of Harvard University’s department of the History of Science and professor of African and African American studies, who was consulted for the series; Peter Boskey ’08, interim director of community and equity; and Manzella also gave students a chance to speak with some 50 attendees, who contributed to a probing discussion about CA’s approach to teaching history. As Mira LaRocca ’20 said, “This is education in action. It’s inspiring us to be thinkers.”

A SOURCE OF STABILITY AND A PATHWAY TO EQUITY

oncord Academy’s endowment is an enduring and reliable bedrock of our operating revenue. In 2019–20, investments that make up CA’s endowment provided more than $3 million to

fund the school’s core functions and programs, including financial aid grants; compensation and professional development for teachers, advisors, coaches, and staff; and maintenance of our buildings and grounds. Sixty-six years ago, forward-looking CA donors saw the strength of institutions with endowments built over time to match their missions. With conviction, they took action to establish a financial foundation for a school destined to accomplish great things. CA will be able to chart its own course and live up to its promise when our endowment grows, providing a greater proportion of our annual operating needs. Only then will we be able to reduce dependence on tuition revenue, expand our financial aid program, and optimize conditions for deep learning to benefit all in CA’s orbit. Thanks to generous alumnae/i, parents, and friends, what was once a distant vision is now a picture in clear view.

NAMED ENDOWED FUNDS A named endowed fund is a gift established in perpetuity, with a portion of annual investment earnings used to provide support for a particular purpose agreed upon by the donor and the school. These funds enable all areas of school life, from supporting faculty

Some schools may have an accumulated advantage of endowments built over hundreds of years. At CA, we lean on ingenuity and resourcefulness — and thanks to donors over the past 60+ years, we are charting our own course to enduring financial stability.

The first gift to CA’s endowment was made in 1954. That $50,000 contribution changed everything. At that moment, CA became an institution expected to thrive across generations. School leadership has invested carefully and thoughtfully. But the real growth has come from the bold and confident infusions made by alumnae/i, parents, and friends.
