Our Generous Donors and Volunteer Leaders

Momentum It livens your step as you cross the CA campus on a crisp fall afternoon, as students dash to class, or meet on the Moriarty Athletic Campus, or run to an audition at the Performing Arts Center. Itβs the feeling that comes from an unexpected discovery in CA Labs, the chorus of friendly faces in the new house common rooms, or instructors from two disciplines working together to develop and teach a new course. It is the spark of encouragement that illuminates a new path, or a lifelong pursuit β a spark that, fanned by tremendous support over these past few years, is growing into a blaze. At Concord Academy we feel that momentum every day, in the power of students, teachers, and graduates to have a positive impact on their peers and to shape their world. Itβs an irresistible energy that stems from the values we embrace as an institution, driven forward by the generosity of our benefactors.

We often say that Concord Academy is a remarkable community. As you look through this report, we hope that you will see what we see: a community remarkable in its generosity. Time and again, we have been amazed by that generosity. In the pages of this report, you will see that the fiscal year of 2017β18 was no exception. Thanks to you, we are seeing strong momentum heading into our centennial, and we are excited about all that is still to come for this incredible school. Our greatest commitment at CA is to our people β the educators and students who define this school. We deliver a world-class education, and we strive to engage every student as a whole person. This combination makes for a truly transformative experience. We hope alumnae/i will remain engaged β with the CA community, and with the global community β for a lifetime. So often we hear from our graduates about how ideas that first took root here have become passions that blossomed into careers, and then became lifelong commitments β ideas that began in a classroom, or over brunch, or on a walk to Walden Pond. Delivering on this human commitment requires a great many resources, and we believe that our model of individual attention and close personal care is worth it. In fact, in speaking with donors and volunteers, we hear the same thing time and time again: βWe canβt imagine a better cause.β We share the responsibility for CAβs future. We know that we are in this together, and we thank you for all that you have done. We are confident that CA will remain healthy and strong with our partnership as its foundation. In these pages, youβll find a community that has come together around a mission and a spirit that connect generations of CA families. Each endorsement carries with it a story, each story a remarkable one. We are grateful to know so many of you, and we look forward to staying in touch through our centennial in 2022 and beyond. Thank you, once again, for all that you do for CA. Know that we speak on behalf of the entire CA community when we say that we are profoundly grateful. Sincerely,

The CA Annual Fund The CA Annual Fund is a pillar of the schoolβs revenue. This collective, community-driven fund fills the gap not covered by tuition and endowment income. This resource is powerful in its immediacy, and it must be replenished every year in order to sustain core programs and fulfill the schoolβs mission. In 2017β18, we asked the CA community to deliver $2,800,000 in contributions to the Annual Fund β 11 percent of the schoolβs operating budget. Your belief and confidence in the school, demonstrated through your contributions, are the true gifts that propel us forward.

The Centennial Campaign for Concord Academy Over the past five years, CA alumnae/i, parents, and friends have supported the Centennial Campaign at an unprecedented level. Such generosity at this moment in our schoolΓ’€™s history creates fresh impetus to enhance our environment for teaching and learning, strengthen our endowment, inspire our faculty, and extend opportunities for our students across and beyond the campus. Together, we are generating momentum that will further Concord AcademyΓ’€™s admirable mission well into its next century.

CAMPAIGN MILESTONES The Centennial Campaign for Concord Academy began in 2013 with an initial set of five fundraising imperatives and a total goal of $32 million. We are humbled to share that 661 CA leaders from all over the world have stepped forward with contributions exceeding our preliminary goal. Today is a moment to celebrate. This report is a testament to the power of philanthropy and the many ways your investments are influencing positive change. This success is also an exhortation for the CA community to continue carrying this torch forward. With the wind at our back, we must all be looking ahead to imagine just how far we can go.
β We are all responsible for ensuring that the CA experience remains available to future generations. Driven by CAβs mission, important milestones have been reached in the last decade. Investing in a strong, endowed foundation has benefits that will endure through a powerful curriculum, the ability to imagine flexible learning environments, and an energized student and adult community, for decades to come.β Lynn Dayton Pβ20, Trustee

CA HOUSES Gathering in Gratitude The new Sylvia M. Mendenhall Common Room in Bradford House was dedicated in honor of an extraordinary former English teacher whose devotion to Concord Academy spanned close to five decades. In 2016, Miss Mendenhall passed away, and in a final act of love for and faith in CA, she left her estate to the school. The bequest of her private home in Chelmsford, Mass., provided funds that made the construction of the common room possible. In Phelps House, the Stone Soup Common Room was named, at the request of the donors who enabled its renovation, by the students on the Boarding Council. The name refers to the βStone Soupβ folktale β a pot with only water and a stone becomes a rich soup, thanks to the contributions of many β to emphasize the values of inclusivity, community, and resourcefulness that infuse CA. As Director of Residential Life Annie Bailey said at the dedication ceremony, βWeβve always gathered students in the common rooms, but with these wonderful new spaces, theyβre not just checking in; theyβre coming and theyβre staying, together.β
Living and Learning Residential life plays a vital role in Concord Academyβs mission, and your investments in CA Houses are already making a difference. Common spaces are now available throughout the day, seven days a week, encouraging meaningful interactions between students and faculty. These spaces foster the kind of organic and inclusive communitybuilding that happens in small gatherings. Creating common areas that are both welcoming and flexible increases opportunities for boarders, day students, and faculty to meet and share their views and perspectives in a setting that is open to everyone. Along with other critical updates to CAβs Colonial houses that frame our Main Street campus, the goal of these investments is to ensure CAβs ongoing identity as a warm, supportive community.

GENEROSITY AT WORK
The campaign has enabled the renewal of all residential buildings. An expansion of Bradford House added living space for students and faculty alike. An accessible entrance leads to an airy, multi-use space where students gather to study and socialize. Common rooms in Wheeler, Admadjaja, and Phelps Houses now accommodate the entire house populations. Additionally, construction is underway for a new building connecting Haines and Hobson Houses, which will open in the fall of 2019! 21

FINANCIAL AID Concord Academy would not be the vibrant and selective institution it is today without a robust investment in financial aid. Core to our mission is a commitment to attracting and enrolling promising students of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, regardless of means. While 25 percent of students at CA receive meaningful financial aid, every year highly qualified students cannot enroll because we lack the funds to support them. The credibility of our school mission depends on our ability to offer aid to deserving students. We simply cannot be Concord Academy without this program.
With limited resources, CA chooses to subsidize an intentionally select number of students more fully, to ensure experiential equity and full access to all CA has to offer. Tuition, room, and board are only part of the package. Our financial aid program is designed to open all doors for every student. This approach distinguishes CA, and considerable support is needed to maintain this promise.
GENEROSITY AT WORK
β The fact that I lived in Geneva and work in global health is a result of thinking bigger, imagining that I can do something bigger, being exposed to different ideas.β Adil Bahalim β02
Adil Bahalim β02 was living with his family in the suburbs of Houston. His grades put him comfortably in the top 1 or 2 percent of his class. Hoping for a shot at better colleges, Adil applied to CA, without ever having set foot on campus. Though his family income was below the poverty line, CAβs aid package gave him the opportunity to attend, and it even covered expenses such as basketball shoes for the CA team and piano lessons on the schoolβs Steinway. Adil went on to study physics at Davidson College and mechanical engineering at Cornell, eventually applying his quantitative background at the front lines of global public health. He has supported community health in response to the Ebola crisis in Liberia; developed a strategy for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and consulted for the World Health Organization. Now he is finishing a doctoral program in public health at Harvard while directing business development for a startup focused on HIV testing and prevention. Adil credits CA with his service-oriented ambitions, which inspired him βto find ways I could improve the world,β he says. The impact of Adilβs work is being felt around the globe, and he says CA is among the factors that expanded his realm of possibility.

CA LABS A Locus for Collaboration and Innovation How can a building stimulate the circulation of ideas? CAβs educators are known for developing methods of teaching that give students the tools to learn through inquiry and collaboration. To expand the full potential of interactive learning, we have created a state-of-the-art science center that reflects this spirit of discovery, a building that serves as a dynamic learning platform and a teaching tool itself. CA Labs has already fostered many opportunities for collaboration that have enlivened our campus. With its meteorological station, slate chalkboard, and temperature-regulating groundcover, the Anatta Green Roof, a gift of Siwalee and Thanawat Trivisvavet β97, offers an unobstructed view of the night sky and a fresh perspective on CAβs campus and the surrounding area. One classroom is home to English, trigonometry, Latin, and advanced physics. The buildingβs flexible design encourages creative thinking and sparks creativity across disciplines.

ADVANCING FACULTY LEADERSHIP One of CAβs strengths is the astonishing array of courses available to students. We owe this range to CAβs faculty, who bring the force of their intellectual curiosity to the curriculum. CAβs classroom lessons extend far beyond the textbook, as the teachers β also historians, poets, engineers, and accomplished artists in their own right β imbue daily discussions with insights from their fields of expertise. By providing the faculty with the tools they need to realize their potential, we optimize the CA experience, and we will continue to attract and develop teachers who have a unique ability to bring out the very best in our students. These endowed funds are already giving faculty opportunities and time to imagine, design, and deliver new courses. Your gifts are unleashing creativity and collaboration at a level never before possible.

GENEROSITY AT WORK
Just a mile from the CA campus, across from the Old North Bridge, stands an unassuming, wood-timbered farmhouse filled with little-known history. A mere 544 square feet, the Robbins House was home to three generations of free African Americans who lived in Concord while slavery was still legal in the United States. During the 2017β18 school year, CA students brought this invisible history to light β through fresh investigation into museum and town archives, as well as a multimedia experience.

Performance Partnerships
The Community & Equity Speaker Series exposes students to a broad range of life experiences, backgrounds, and ideas. Viral video hitmaker Daysha Edewi β10 returned to campus to discuss minority representation in popular culture. Harvard education professor and sociologist Natasha Kumar Warikoo spoke about how we think about race and meritocracy, and why it matters.
CAβs Performing Arts Department has partnered with the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston and acclaimed artistic directors for weeklong programs that have culminated in performances for as many as 400 visitors. Organized by Amy Spencer and Richard Colton of the Performing Arts Department, as well as others, these events expose students to artistic paths and creative opportunities.

The CA Endowment Income from CAβs endowment fuels all aspects of school life, from developing curricula to supporting faculty to maintaining CAβs campus. In 2017β18, the endowment draw funded 12 percent of the schoolβs core operating budget, including essential financial aid for deserving students. We are grateful for the philanthropic investments over time that have made this revenue possible. CAβs endowment growth is the key to long-term financial health for the school. Because of its permanence, the endowment is also an enduring tribute to faculty, staff, alumnae/i, parents, and friends β the people who define our identity and embody our aims.

CHAMELEON CIRCLE
50TH REUNION GIFT
The Chameleon Circle was created to recognize and thank alumnae/i, families, and friends who have made a bequest or planned gift to Concord Academy. Chameleon Circle members have endowed faculty chairs and scholarships, expanded the resources of the school, helped to sustain innovative programs, created fellowships, and made possible a variety of facilities initiatives.
During their 50th reunion, the following members of CAβs class of 1968 made gifts to honor their classmates who have passed, and support CAβs faculty. Their gifts will facilitate professional development and expanded classroom experiences, particularly education in solving real-world problems, all accomplished through an experiential learning collaboration with a peer school in the area.

FINANCIAL AID CHALLENGE GIFT A generous challenge gift, offered by anonymous donors, resulted in $237,000 financial aid dollars, which were applied immediately to the grants promised and deployed during the 2017β18 academic year. Inspired by the challenge, 15 alumnae/i and parents answered the call by raising an initial $100,000 β with contributions ranging from $1,922 to $25,000 β which the anonymous donors matched. We echo the words of our challenge donors, βWe are always stronger together, and are grateful to everyone who joined us!β

Below are the names of those individuals who guided these efforts. The gift of your time and energy is inspiring, and creates momentum for everything we achieve.
Class Secretaries We are grateful to the following CA graduates for maintaining strong connections with classmates around the world. Because of you we are able to share stories, pictures, and updates which are published for the entire community in CA Magazine. This is an invaluable service. Olivia Swaim LeFeaver β41, Pβ76
