The President’s Thoughts Dear Friends, Advent is upon us, it is the season of anticipation of the coming of our Savior, Jesus. We celebrate this long prophesized and most important event in human history; the baby Jesus sent on a mission from God to be born of a virgin, to live and die sinless to save mankind. Merry Christmas. Our Concordia Lutheran Ministries exists to serve people, especially people in great need, while proclaiming the hope of the gift described above. As our ministry grows, we have the opportunity and responsibility to keep proclaiming that Gospel message. 2017 was another year of growth and blessing for Concordia. We now serve nearly 40,000 people each year. We have been honored to have the opportunity to serve over 350 people in our facilities who do not have the funds to pay for their care, a $6 million plus blessing. We have also had the opportunity to provide mission grants of over $2.5 million to over 55 local and foreign missions. 2018 promises to be the largest year ever for mission growth. We expect to be able to announce several new acquisitions by the end of 2017. We are thankful for your prayers and support ~ Merry Christmas from all of us at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.

In His Service,

Keith E. Frndak President and Chief Executive Officer

Concordia Dietary Aide Learns New Skills as Human Resources Intern While the first part in this series said. “I was looking for a job at the focused on a Concordia intern who time and realized that Concordia was hired after her internship, many wasn’t too far away and would work employees find opportunities to with my schedule.” move up in the organization after Kaleigh continued working at they are hired – sometimes even in Concordia after starting college at a different field. Whether it’s a nurse IUP, where she decided to study aide who becomes the director of human resources. When looking for a dementia program, a dietary aide who becomes the administrator of a facility or one of many other examples throughout the organization, Concordia encourages employees to grow and pursue their passions. One such employee is Kaleigh Lowers, who started as a dietary aide in the Lund Care Center on the Concordia at Cabot campus and now interns Kaleigh Lowers with resident Marie Williams. in the human resources department there. somewhere to intern, Kaleigh again Kaleigh, an Indiana University of chose Concordia, and started in May Pennsylvania (IUP) student from 2017 in her new position. Kaleigh said. “Of course schooling is “My grandma was actually a paimportant, but everything that you tient here because she had hurt her learn in the classroom doesn’t set in leg, and I came to visit her,” Kaleigh until you’re actually doing it in the 4 - Faith in Caring

field. I could sit and read a book about HR and not understand as much as I do now.” During the summer, Kaleigh worked in dietary on the weekends and in human resources during the week. She says that the best parts of both her roles at Concordia are the people she gets to work with every day. “I love the resident interaction in dietary,” Kaleigh said. “I have a resident named Marie who’s just so bright and bubbly; she always asks how I’m doing and chats with me. Her daughter came in one day and told me: ‘My mother loves you and raves about you all the time!’ It’s always nice to get to talk to everyone and their families and know they appreciate you.” In her internship, Kaleigh also gets to interact with employees and prospective employees. “I really like interviewing people,” Kaleigh said. “They’re usually very nervous as first, so I try to get them to laugh and come out of their shells. I like to see their potential

She’s also very busy at IUP as the alumni chair for Phi Gamma Nu, a business fraternity, and as a member of the National Society for Human Resource Management. She will graduate in May 2018 and is grateful for all she’s learned at Concordia. “I never fully realized the depth

of human resources until I started here,” Kaleigh said. “I’ve learned a lot about recruitment and the specifics of the hiring process, regulations and so much more. I’ve gotten so much experience from being here, and I love it.” Ultimately, Kaleigh says that what sets Concordia apart is the environment. “The family atmosphere is the best part of Concordia,” Kaleigh

said. “It’s a large place with a lot of different buildings and facilities, but I like how it always feels so homey everywhere. It doesn’t feel like a big office building; it’s like home.” Interested in joining the Concordia family as an employee? Celebrating Chris Many Activities Fill Concordia's Schedule at Christmas Time Christmas is a sacred time to spread joy for the entire Concordia Lutheran Ministries family: residents, patients, families, employees, member congregations and the community. As Concordia has grown over the years, the ways in which every facility and office rejoice in the season have as well. Resident Christmas Celebrations Each December, many locations in the Concordia family participate in a program called “Adopt-A-Resident.” Skilled nursing and personal care residents provide the activities staff with a wish list. Then, employees, community members, churches, businesses and even retirement living residents “adopt” a resident (or in some cases, many residents) to make sure he or she has a gift to open around Christmas. Close to Christmas Day, each facility has a gift giving party, during which all of the presents are handed out to the residents – usually with a visit from Santa himself. In addition to the Adopt-AResident programs, residents and patients at Concordia facilities celebrate Christmas in many other ways throughout December. Personal care and skilled nursing residents enjoy numerous programs, such as cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus visit residents Santa, visiting at the Lund Care Center parties. carolers from 6 - Faith in Caring

local churches, Christmas open houses, handbell concerts, baking for the troops and making cards for local Meals on Wheels programs. Residents at our four retirement living communities – the Concordia Haven Apartments in Cabot, Concordia of the South Hills, Concordia at Sumner and Highpointe at Rebecca – also have many different opportunities to celebrate: holiday meals, a

Santa delivers gifts at the Concordia at the Orchard resident parties parade of homes, Santa socials, trips to local Christmas light displays (both amateur and professional), a holiday bazaar fundraiser, Christmas-themed theater shows, food drives and much more. Haven residents even write, direct and carry out a Cantata each Christmas season, performing at each building on the Cabot campus. Employee Christmas Parties The Christmas season is busy for everyone, but Concordia makes sure to take time to appreciate all of the amazing employees who give their time and talents to our mission year-round. In addition to

stmas with Concordia holiday gift cards, bonuses and free hams (depending on how many hours an employee has worked that year), the best way that Concordia does this is through annual Christmas parties. This year, Concordia will host five Christmas parties for employees of all our facilities and service lines. In addition to great food, company and dancing, the parties also include cash prizes that are handed out to everyone who attends. The amounts vary, but over $50,000 in total will be distributed to those who attend the parties. In addition, employees who have worked at Concordia for 20 years are recognized at their Christmas party and receive their choice of appreciation gift: a high-definition television or travel accommodations for a trip of their choice, both of which are accompanied by an additional cash gift. In 2014, a new tradition was also started. All 25-year employees are recognized and receive a trip to a special event in Pittsburgh together in a limo, followed by dinner overlooking Mount Washington.

HIGHPOINTE AT REBECCA A Concordia Community

Look for Highpointe on the Small Screen While all of the residents at Highpointe at Rebecca are settling in to their new home and getting ready for the Christmas season, a few are taking time out of their busy schedules to prepare for television interviews. Concordia will soon air commercials for Highpointe at Rebecca as well as the Concordia Haven Apartments in Cabot and Concordia of the South Hills – on KDKA-TV, WPXI and WTAE-TV, among other channels. The commercials will feature unscripted resident testimonials about the quality, security and value that Concordia Retirement Living offers and the worry-free lifestyle that they enjoy every day. These current Highpointe residents have already taken advantage of our considerable early bird discounts, which could easily save them thousands of dollars each in their first few years – as well as in the future. The time is quickly running out to take advantage of all three early bird discounts: 1) A 6 percent discount on your entrance fee, monthly fee and second person fee. Effective February 1, 2018 the discount will decrease to 5 percent. 2) A 3 percent veteran's discount on your entrance fee for veterans/spouses who meet eligibility requirements. 3) A 10 percent discount on future health care services at Concordia at Rebecca Residence, located on the same campus. The best way to learn more about Highpointe is to see it in person and talk to our residents. An Open 8 - Faith in Caring

House with Happy Hour will be held on Friday, January 26, from 3-5 p.m. with entertainment. RSVPs are recommended but not required. For more information about Highpointe or to RSVP to the Open House, call 724-444-1521 or visit us online at www.HighpointeRebecca.org

Getting to Know the Neighbors Written by: Isuri Rajapaksa While it’s true that Highpointe at Rebecca offers a wide variety of services, activities and amenities, we believe that one of the best features is the sense of community created by the residents and staff members there. Of course, you don’t have to take our word for it: John and Mary Repasky John and Mary Repasky, two of Highpointe’s founding residents, first heard about their new home from a postcard they received promoting an information session about Concordia’s newest retirement living community. They decided to attend, and by the end of the session, they were ready to make an even bigger decision. “John looked at me and said, ‘Let’s sign up!’” Mary said. The couple, who both worked at the US Postal Service before retiring in 2003, committed to a one bedroom apartment that very same day. At the time, Highpointe was still under construction, but they agreed that it was exactly what they were looking for.

While they waited for Highpointe to be finished, they continued to live in their home in Gibsonia in an ‘in-law suite.’ The Repaskys have two sons: Michael, who they lived with in Gibsonia, and Joseph, who resides in Cranberry. They also have four grandchildren. “It was perfect because we could take care of our grandchildren, and it was nice to have them all right upstairs,” Mary said. “As they grew up, John and I realized that it was time to take the next step.” That next step was fully realized this fall when the couple could finally move into their new apartment, which they love for many reasons. “I feel like I’m living in a 5-star hotel,” Mary added. “The food is top-notch; I don’t think I have eaten like this ever before!” She also praised all the employees at Highpointe, from maintenance to management. “We are amazed by their commitment; they go above and beyond to make sure every resident’s needs are met,” she said. “They are willing to drop whatever they are doing and assist whenever needed.” In their free time, John and Mary go for walks around the building and workout at the gym. John loves making 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles and playing pool with his grandchildren in the billiards room. Mary volunteers at Aquinas Academy in Gibsonia and at a local church. Her advice to other seniors is simple: “Come and take a look at Highpointe for yourself, and you will be surprised at all the amenities and services offered at such a reasonable rate.” John and Mary are grateful for everything they have in their new home – especially all of the new friends they have found in their neighbors. “We are already a family here and it has only been a month!” Paul and Marjorie Sober Paul and Marjorie Sober were one of the first couples to move in to Highpointe at Rebecca. After nearly 60 years in their home in Leechburg, they decided it

was time for a change. Initially, the couple thought a patio home would be ideal for them, but they weren’t sure how safe it would be. After searching for the perfect retirement community, their daughter mentioned Concordia. After that, they started attending all of Highpointe’s open houses. “We were amazed by the amenities and services they offered,” Marjorie said. Married for 64 years, the Sobers have two children: James, who lives in Dana Point, California, and Jennifer, who resides in Allison Park. They also have five grandsons. Paul worked for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation and retired in 1991. During her free time, Marjorie does a lot of sewing. She has been making blankets for babies at children's hospitals for more than 10 years. Meanwhile, Paul enjoys being outside spending time with their dog, Rosie. The couple loves that the apartment is not only perfect for them but for Rosie too. Marjorie can’t say enough about the employees at Highpointe. “All of the staff members are just wonderful,” Marjorie said. “They make us feel like we are part of their family, and it feels special.” The Sobers also highly recommend the food. “The food is so good we haven’t missed a meal in the dining room,” they agreed. All in all, the couple is very happy to call Highpointe their new home. “We came in with an open mind,” Marjorie said. “And this is the best decision we’ve ever made.” If you are thinking about joining the Repaskys and Sobers at Highpointe at Rebecca, we hope that you will consider joining us for a complimentary lunch and tour of the community. Those interested are encouraged to complete an application soon, before our current discounts expire. To schedule your visit, please call Admissions Counselor and Resident Care Coordinator Julie Spirnock at 724-444-1521. Visit our website at www.HighpointeRebecca.org.

During this season, as we await and celebrate Jesus’ birth, we are all in search of hope - for healing, happiness and comfort. At Concordia Lutheran Ministries, we are entering into a very special time of year - our Season of Hope. As we begin this Holy season, we ask that you consider giving a gift to the fund that resonates most in your heart. The greatest gift someone could give is the HOPE for continued support of our important mission. To find out more or to participate in Concordia’s Season of Hope campaign, please visit www.CLMSeasonofHope.com. You can also contact the CLM Foundation Office at Giving@ConcordiaLM.org or 724-352-1571, ext. 8363. We thank you in advance for making a gift to Concordia during this Christmas season.

THE HORST & ELEANOR SCHWALM FAITH IN CARING AWARD Since Concordia Lutheran Ministries’ founding in 1881, volunteers have been a fundamental part of our mission’s solid foundation, and we give glory to God for the ways in which our volunteers continue to bless our ministry with their time and talent. Concordia hosts a Volunteer Awards Luncheon each year to honor all of its volunteers across the organization. Beginning in 2018, we will annually present The Horst & Eleanor Schwalm Faith In Caring Award to a single volunteer (or group of volunteers) who truly goes above and beyond in service to others. The award is named in honor of longtime administrator Horst Schwalm and his widow Eleanor, who turned 95 years old in March 2017 and in 2018 will have resided at Concordia for half of her years. Eleanor remains active at Concordia as a faithful volunteer and provided the keynote address during the 2017 Legacy Society Appreciation Luncheon. The Faith In Caring Award will be regarded as Concordia’s highest volunteer honor. The award will carry a $1,000 stipend – $500 to benefit the volunteer’s program and $500 to benefit the Concordia Angel Tear Ministries Fund in honor of the volunteer(s). We invite all to join together in honoring Eleanor Schwalm – a true blessing to Concordia – as well as her late husband Horst. We are looking for 100 friends and donors to make gifts to both honor the Schwalm legacy and to support our activity and volunteer programs. To help us permanently endow this high honor with a gift of your own, please use the enclosed envelope (write “Schwalm Award” in the “other” field) or mail your gift to the CLM Foundation Office at 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023. If you have questions or want to pay by credit card over the phone, please call the Foundation office at 724-352-1571, ext. 8355. On behalf of those who benefit from the thousands of volunteer hours carried out each year at Concordia, we thank you in advance for your support.

IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts An Easy Way to Give at the End of the Year Legislation enacted in December 2015 authorized charitable gifts from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) permanently for future years. The IRA Charitable Rollover Program allows taxpayers to share their blessings by giving of their savings directly to Concordia Lutheran Ministries - and bypassing income tax. It also helps any donor satisfy required minimum distribution from their individual retirement accounts. If you are 70 1/2 years old or older, you may be eligible to make a tax-free distribution of assets from your IRA to Concordia in support of our mission of caring. And like any other charitable gift to Concordia, you can choose the fund or location you hold close to your heart. The requirements are as follows: • The distribution must be made from an IRA (other retirement accounts are not eligible). • The recipient must be an eligible charitable

organization. • The IRA’s owner must be at least age 70 1/2. • The distribution must be made directly to the charity by December 31. • The distribution must otherwise be fully deductible as a charitable contribution. • The distribution must otherwise be included in gross income. Along with income tax-free giving, qualified IRA gifts are not subject to state income taxes, and amounts withdrawn are removed from the donor’s taxable estate. Talk to your tax advisor to see which benefits apply to your specific situation. If you have questions or would like to discuss your IRA assets in furtherance of your charitable goals, please contact the Concordia Lutheran Ministries Foundation soon to begin the process in time to meet the Dec. 31 tax year deadline. Contact us at 724-3521571, ext. 8363 or giving@concordialm.org.

The Concordia Mailbag Dear Hope Rouda and Anne Denny, I felt inspired to pass on to you some positive comments about your staff here at the Cabot campus Lund building. As you know my office is located near room #2050. Since I've been in this location, there has been a special resident (HT) who lived there. When I moved to my office, HT prided herself on how independent she was for a woman in her upper nineties. She had a great sense of humor and was loved by many. In late 2016, HT had a fall which necessitated a hospital and skilled nursing stay. She returned to personal care a different woman who not only needed additional help with her daily activities, but was insecure and frightened to be left alone. She often called 16 - Faith in Caring

out for help to staff or anyone walking by her room. HT recently passed away. I am so proud of all of the staff that cared for her. Their patience was tested often. But they maintained their professionalism and compassion while caring for HT. It was a team effort involving several different departments. I especially want to commend the following employees who I observed on a more regular basis: Christine Doerr, Janet Burtner, Taylor Patterson, Mandy Jones and Diane Tritch. Each one helped HT in their own special way. Each one helped her feel cared for, loved and safe at Concordia. Each person served God and served well. -Concordia at Cabot staff member

"Come Soon, Lord Jesus. Amen" Submitted by Deaconess Heather Wathall

"Come Soon, Lord Jesus. Amen" The campus pastor at Concordia University Chicago ended every homily with these words. It always struck me as a prayer for perspective, though I imagine during finals week the prayer took on special meaning for many an unprepared student — a plea for rescue from hard work ahead. But these words truly are a prayer for God’s people every day. We are called to do what is placed before us each day as if it is the last one before the Second Coming of Christ. This time of year, as we end one church year and begin another, the return of Christ is a prominent theme in readings and sermons. Jesus made a promise to return, and we trust that He will keep His word. And so the days in December tend to take on this theme, remembering Jesus’ triumphal return as King of all, even as we ponder His birth among us. In the days of Advent, the prayer for Jesus to come is set to music and becomes our song. The verses of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” are based upon the “O Antiphons” — verses in use for prayer for more than 1,500 years by some accounts. Traditionally prayed December 17—23, each antiphon teaches us something about who Jesus is as prophesied by Isaiah the prophet to the people

of Israel. Jesus is Wisdom, Lord, Root of Jesse, Key of David, Dayspring, Desire of Nations and Emmanuel. We find ourselves in a variety of needs as we sojourn here on earth. We can call upon the same Jesus in every need. We may name Him as Wisdom when seeking medical treatment or contemplating a change in career. He is Lord to those who feel helpless watching a loved one struggling. Jesus stands as the Root of Jesse and Desire of Nations when we worry about the magnitude of the troubles in our world. He is Dayspring and Key of David as we keep vigil with one who will soon draw a final breath and then see Him face to face. But the final antiphon draws all of these titles together and brings them to the present situation, to the “here, in it with me.” Jesus is Emmanuel, He is “God with us.” There is no part of our lives that escapes His care and attention. Our God knows what it is to be a human being in this world. As John wrote, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14) This dwelling among us continues. We have His promise never to leave or forsake us. So take a moment this Advent and look up the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” or the “O Antiphons.” Join in the prayer of so many Christians past, present, and future. Join in the hope and joy of the refrain: “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel!”

Our God knows what it is to be a human being in this world.

NEWS / NOTES December 2017

Sumner Fashion Show Benefits Garden Concordia at Sumner hosted its Second Annual Fashion Show fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 17 at St. George’s Fellowship Hall in Fairlawn, Ohio, and the event was a combination of fashions, fun and fellowship – all for a new Garden of Prayer around the Louise Sumner Pavilion. Fashions by “Cynthia’s Boutique” were modeled by Concordia staff, residents, members of the Louise Sumner Board and the Boutique employees. Along with the fashions, a basket auction, silent auction and a variety of vendors made for a great event for all attendees and contributed more than $14,000 in donations. The new Garden will be a multi-sensory experience for all who choose to explore it.

Chaplaincy Services Jack Hartman conducted a blessing on the building and those who will live there, and Concordia Chief Operating Officer Brian Hortert closed the ceremony with a champagne toast and the ceremonial ribbon cutting, featuring all of the founding residents in attendance. At that point someone looked into the sky and all witnessed a most unique coincidence – the form of a cross had been created in the sky above the building. The event included tours of the building/model apartments, entertainment by River City Brass and hors d’oeuvres.

The “Founders,” or first people who reserved apartments, cut the ceremonial ribbon at the Highpointe grand opening.

Highpointe at Rebecca Celebrates LongAwaited Grand Opening Concordia celebrated another milestone on Sept. 23, 2017 when 300 people gathered to open the 109unit retirement community on the Rebecca Residence campus. After a brief introduction from Concordia at Rebecca Residence Executive Director Mike Kaufman, Concordia President and CEO Keith Frndak spoke about the history of Rebecca Residence and Concordia and how they intersected. He thanked the Concordia Board and Planning Committee, architects, builders, staff and, most importantly, the residents who put their faith in Concordia before seeing the building. Concordia Board Chairman Steve Johnson quoted Psalm 118:24 and recognized the foresight of past Board Members to have a vision for a retirement community in this area - and the patience required to work on it for a decade. September came to a perfect close at Saxony Farm in Saxonburg at the Second Annual Good Samaritan Hospice Walk when those in attendance walked a little more than a mile around the quiet farm in memory of their lost loved ones. The event featured a dove release, games and activities for kids, employee recognition and door prizes for everyone. Proceeds made from the event make a difference to the hospice patients and families we are fortunate to serve.

2017-18 EVENTS 2017 2017 Concordia Oktoberfest Hosts More than 1,600 Oct. 10 marked another great Concordia Oktoberfest for more reasons than high numbers. There were nearly 500 kids enjoying free food, free activities like a bouncy house, pumpkin decorating, face painting, pony rides, hay rides and the most spectacular Zambelli fireworks. The thermometer nearly reached 90 degrees, but that didn’t stop the energy of The Mikey Dee Polka Band. Member church bake sales and the Haven residents’ Rummage sale sold out just two hours into the event. Special thanks to the 80+ volunteers from Concordia who made the event run smoothly.

NEWS / NOTES Concordia Purchases Property in Penn Twp. In an effort to once again expand its mission of serving others, Concordia purchased a 134 acre parcel of property in Penn Twp. known as The Mansion. Specific plans for the property have not been finalized, but Concordia intends to incorporate The Mansion in its future plans to serve people. Concordia purchased the property from the Raymond Lassinger Family Trust and their company, Associated Ceramics and Technology, Inc. The family made a generous charitable donation as part of the transaction to help further the care Concordia provides. “Our gift is an expression of gratitude for the excellent comfort and care given to my wife, my father and my mother during their stays at Concordia,” Raymond Lassinger said. The location and frontage on the Route 8 corridor was a chief component in Concordia’s decision to purchase the property. In February, Concordia acquired the former Middlesex Elementary School, approximately 4 miles away, for administrative offices for its home health and hospice companies – in addition to donating some of the space to a local nonprofit.

Charlene Kish, CEO, recognized and thanked the family of employees on Nov. 16 at three meetings where a slide show presentation took them through the years and announced the new garden apartment expansion scheduled to begin in 2018. The subsidiary of Concordia Lutheran Ministries acquired the Continuing Care Retirement Community on Nov. 13, 2012. According to Charlene, “We are at record numbers in each of the three service areas with near capacity. And the groundbreaking of our 2018 new apartment expansion is a result of our success.” In the past five years, CaS has seen many successful highlights: Cleveland Clinic Akron General uses CaS as part of its residency program and for medical student rotations in geriatrics, an Alzheimer’s Sup22 - Faith in Caring
