Actual entries from Coach K’s Diary

“Athletics 2022-2023”

AISAA begins again! Bummer, each school has different rules in regards to players, spectators, and when they can start competition with other schools. Some are unable to join the league and only play in the tournament, a couple not able to play anything yet. Poor JV girls football, need games. An AISAA rule change – A player can play in her/ his own level and play up.

Basketball teams – each player has the dragons style of play now, should be ok. Good vibes at practices. G5U obviously didn’t play much during the past couple years. Basic skills and game environment needed. JV and Varsity have the foundation and are at the level to perform well this year. FUN to watch!

Volleyball – building year. Logos Cambodia back with our Varsity Girls Volleyball Tournament.

More interest than ever among both boys and girls. It will take this year and part of next to master the communication needed on the court and when that happens, it will be “Dragons Volleyball, Bump Set and Spike, because you know what we like.”

Table Tennis and Badminton – getting more practice time this year. Good job by coaches sharing training, occasionally missing players, and figuring out who is with whom in Badminton doubles. Should be fine in AISAA.

Varsity boys football look very strong and we finally have depth. JV boys and girls teams come with the right attitude, coachable, and wanting to improve. Younger levels football players are out of shape, basic skills needed for most boys and girls. A couple of players on each team will need to carry the load. Coaches have their work to do with this batch.

Swimming Dragons - Taiwan and Myanmar teams joining our meet. My, oh my are we solid! Would love to take the top in each age group to compete at Hawaii state meet. Parent communication is necessary in regards to not signing their child up for too many activities “in season”. Especially athletes who play in a team sport and swim or golf or are on a racket sport team.

Varsity boys football – AMAZING. Champions of AISAA League, AISAA Tournament, and 7th Annual SEAIS Football Tournament. Next year to Mandalay!

JV girls football – most exciting victories to earn AISAA Tournament Champions. And, the Coach did make a difference. JV boys won the League and next year we will try and host the boys at home to be sure of fair officiating.

Track and Field – Speed and endurance are there, strength is coming. Next year, top athletes in each event must train regularly. Super foundation for many kids though in our younger ages.

Dragons Golf – this year was practice and return to play. 2023-24 will be only the top golfers on the Dragons Golf Team that enter the ISGT Tournaments, abiding by their rule. Already more tournaments are scheduled for next year.

Squash – Rapidly improving. The team is preparing for the many legs of the 2023-24 Thailand Squash Tournament.

JV girls and JV boys Basketball – Rockin’ the basketball planet with quickness, swarming defense, and finally the much needed element – DESIRE. Dragons - Power Up!

Strength and Endurance - Proud of a few DP students who are making it happen!

Coaches are meeting with next year teams already, providing players with options for fitness through July, because DRAGONS ARE GOING TO SOAR EVEN HIGHER IN 2023-2024!

Tournament

On March 18th to 19th of 2023, the Concordian Squash Team took part in a TSRA Squash Youth Circuit hosted at the Rama Gardens Hotel Sports Complex. Ten Students from four different grades competed in the tournament across 5 age groups, of which Minnie (G6) took 1st place in the U13 Girls, Teak (G7) took 2nd place in the U13 boys, and Kenjung (G7) took 3rd place in the U15 boys.

Each participant showed great commitment and perseverance in each of their games as they often competed with players with far more experience than them. It was inspiring to witness every player treating this tournament as a valuable learning experience. Despite some players facing defeat, they eagerly sought additional games with their opponents to continue reflecting and improving their skills, and used time between games to practice with the more experienced players from different teams. We look forward to seeing more players play in the Squash Team as we compete in future tournaments.

Dragons

It’s been a great year for Dragon’s golf. Congratulations to Pei Pei for winning the Dragon’s Cup and a special shout out to Kan for being the only player to compete in all the events this year. I would also like to offer a fond farewell to Matthew. He has been on the team since 6th grade and has throughout the years been a great member of the team, always trying to improve, never giving up, always a positive influence on all of us. He will be missed. Good luck going forward Matthew!

I was very happy to see so many new players. And a big shout out to all the parents for the wonderful support you have given to our young but growing program.

So now everyone be sure to play a lot of golf over the summer. Hit it straight and hit it long!

Boy’s Junior Varsity Volleyball Tournament @ Berkley - 23rd April 2023

Wow, what a weekend! Some team members had a gruelling one: Football on Saturday and a mammoth 9 hours of Volleyball on Sunday! The recently concluded AISAA volleyball tournament brought together some of the most talented teams from across the city, captivating fans with its high-intensity matches and nail-biting moments. The tournament showcased the epitome of athleticism, teamwork, and sheer determination as teams battled it out on the court, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. The Boys got off to a shaky start losing to Well’s, but the game could not have been closer. After the first game, the team rested and regrouped and came out with grit and determination throughout the rest of the pool and managed to secure a semifinal place.

The team displayed exceptional skill and teamwork from the initial matches to the intense semifinal showdown. Their dominant displays against formidable opponents left spectators in awe. The players exhibited powerful serves, well-executed blocks, and precise attacks, displaying their commitment to the game and desire to succeed. Unfortunately, the team ran out of steam and lost in the semifinal. Several players stood out with their exceptional performances throughout the tournament. Ty and Ta emerged as forces to be reckoned with, consistently delivering powerful spikes that left opponents scrambling to defend. Outstanding serving from Thun throughout the tournament, and his precision and agility at the net were unparalleled. Finally, Captain Zen displayed his leadership and all-around skills from setting, spiking and serving, keeping the team motivated throughout.

The volleyball tournament marked the end of the season, delivering an enthralling experience for players and spectators alike. It served as a platform to showcase the developing talent, skill, and passion for the sport and had the highest number of teams (9) ever in our league. From the heartstopping matches to the exceptional performances of individual players, this tournament will be remembered as a defining moment in the AISAA calendar. Congratulations to the boys after finishing in second place overall in the league. See you in the Varsity Squad!!

This season was a very interesting one. We are growing as a program and have expanded to reach new heights (haha) with our athletes. We are excited that the JV boys team came together this year and even integrated some players new to the sport. It was incredible to see how much you have grown this year.

Nothing brings a coach more joy than seeing athletes adapt and develop new skills. From Ty’s outrageous blocks to Kurtis’ ever-growing vertical jump, we saw a lot of progress. Chino took on a tough role as setter this season and really came into his own. All of our players were impressive, but none more reliable than Deen’s serving.

I am looking forward to what next season brings and how varsity will grow and change!

Volleyball Girls

When I look back on the 2023 JV girls' volleyball season, I would like to take a moment to reflect on our team's performance. Overall, I am proud to say that we worked hard, played hard, had fun, and improved throughout the season.

From the very beginning, our team set a high standard for ourselves. We showed up to practices and games with a positive attitude, ready to push ourselves to be the best we could be. Our dedication and hard work paid off, as we steadily improved our skills and strategies with each passing week.

But it wasn't just about the hard work for us. We also made sure to have fun and enjoy every moment of the season. We cheered each other on, celebrated our successes, and lifted each other up during the tough moments. The bond we formed as a team was truly special, and it made every game and practice that much more enjoyable.

As we look back on the season, we can all agree that we improved in countless ways. Our serves got stronger, our passes got more accurate, and our teamwork became more seamless. We learned from each other and from our opponents, and we never stopped striving to be better.

I want to thank each and every member of the team for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. I am proud to have been a part of such a fine group of athletes, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish in the future.

Coach Luke

It was so great to see you all grow as players and as teammates. What a great season. I look forward to working with you next season as we develop. My highlight of the season was watching how you came together and grew as communicators. As Coach Luke said, this season was very positive and really made us come together. See you next season!

G3U mixed Basketball

T he Concordian Dragons G3U mixed basketball team played very well in the G3U Basketball Tournament. The players were excited to play a tournament in this age group, got to make some new friends, and showed good sportsmanship the whole day. We would also like to thank the many parents who came to cheer. Next year, we will train hard for the AISAA G3U Basketball Tournaments for boys and girls.

Thanks, Raymond

T his year’s team surpassed expectations for the season considering that the previous two seasons of varsity boys' teams did not win a game in league play and had a point differential over negative 300. The boys finished second in league play and won five of their games in the AISAA tournament against national and international competition before falling short in the final.

The players improved their basketball skills and IQ over the season and displayed better teamwork the more they played together. Who knows what the boys can accomplish as they build more team chemistry next year?

D ragons JV Boys are the AISAA Basketball League and Tournament Champion this year!

These boys know that winning isn’t everything. Having fun, developing and improving skills, and good camaraderie stimulate them on and off the court. But they want to win every game! Team effort, focusing on their strength, and supporting each other have brought these boys the Championships.

Girls Basketball

Girls Basketball

This year’s JV girls basketball team is filled with unforgettable memories such as being the champion of the tournament and being the runner-up for the league’s champion. It is sad that this will be my last year in the JV team be cause I am really proud of this team, especially our journey through the tournament. Our success on the court was a result of the countless hours of hard work, dedication, and teamwork that we put in together. I will cherish the memories of our practices, games, and team bonding activities for years to come. The support and encouragement that we gave each other on and off the court is something that is really memorable. I am grateful to be a part of this team and would like to thank the support from our coaches, Mr. Brandon and Mr. Craig for encouraging us.

Fall Semester 2022

The grade 3 and under football team faced an extra challenge this year as it was the first postCOVID pandemic season. Many of the players were new to football or they had not played football for a long time. We had to learn or relearn many basic football skills.

Despite the difficulties, the boys never gave up and tried their best in every game. The team's captain, Keaton, was an exceptional leader. He did his best to be a leader and to keep the spirits of his team mates up in some tough games.

The team gained valuable experience and learned important skills, such as teamwork and sportsmanship. The players also developed their individual skills and discovered their strengths and weaknesses, which they can work on improving in the future. Winning will come with this group.

We are looking forward to the next season. The first and second grade students already have game experience. With Dayone leading the way as their new captain, they are excited to continue growing and learning together. We are sure that next season, with Dayone as Captain and a more experienced squad of players we will be very successful in the 2023 – 2024 football season.

The team will miss the 3rd graders as they move on to the G5U team. Good luck next season and be sure to come and cheer on your old G3U teammates next year. Go Dragons!

The G3U girls football team started the season with seven returning players from Grades 2 and 3. Our team members were ecstatic to be back on the field after the pandemic. Our team began with eight Grade 2 and Grade 3 players: Lada, Korbua, Proud, Prim, Charlotte, Katelyn, Stephanie, and Kaemsai. We also have Earn Earn, who is a third-grade player, joined us. Chevel, Cheetah, Mahya, Vita, Meyhar, and Ching Ching joined the team from Grade 2. We also welcomed five new Grade 1 players: Alyn, Sirin, Nana, and Punpun. The girls team had a record 19 footballers show up every Tuesday to play together.

Coach Cez and Coach Han were the team's dedicated coaches. Our coaches worked hard to improve each player's skills and abilities. The team began to acquire skills in order to increase their understanding and enjoyment of the game. Many fun activities and drills were used during practices to improve speed, strength, agility, coordination, athleticism, and, most importantly, teamwork.

Throughout the season, the Dragons participated in a number of games and tournaments, competing against other schools in the region.

We played our first friendly game versus KIS and Berkley in January. It was many of our players' first opportunity to see how to play a real game, understand positions, cheer on one another, and observe skills. We finished second in a tournament held at KIS in February. The season ended in March with a pleasant friendly tournament against the parents. Everyone had a great time playing football with their parents.

Let’s not forget to give thanks to Coach Toni who often assists with football matches during tournaments.

The G3U Dragons had a solid season overall, doing well in their matches and competitions and having a positive influence on the community. The team members gained useful knowledge about determination, cooperation, and sportsmanship as well as vital skills and competencies that will help them in the future.

Go Dragons!

Varsity Boys

This season the hopes were high, as it’s very rare to have a squad with so much talent. Most of our substitute players would have been in the starting seven in any other school team. With this as the premise, the aim was clear – to win it all!

Dragons picked up a few easy wins early in the league but were faced with a real challenge when playing against Berkeley. The small pitch size and the uneven grass proved to be unsuitable for the Dragon’s playing style which emphasizes passing and keeping the ball on the ground whenever possible. With not much left on the clock, Berkeley was up 4 – 2 and heading for the league title. But with skill, effort, and a relentless fighting spirit the Dragons were able to tie the game 4-4 before the final whistle. A few weeks later a win against Ekamai secured the league title for the Concordian Dragons!

With the league title in the bag, our dragons were the clear favorites to win the varsity football AISAA tournament. Like an unstoppable train, dragons beat each and every opponent they faced and lived up to the high hopes. The final whistle came and Concordian varsity football history was written. Both the AISAA league and the AISAA tournament trophies found their place at our very own dragon’s lair.

Coach K, Coach X, and I are sad to say goodbye to our two seniors, Tonnam and Pun-Pun, who have brought speed, strength, and skill to our offense. You will be missed next year.

A big congratulation to everyone who participated in the games throughout this long season. Go Dragons!

Coach Markus

G5U Boys

“Oh my, we have some work to do,” is what Coach Kij and I said in the beginning of the season. The boys from Grade 5 and Grade 4 were the most mixed up bunch we have seen since before covid. There were different skill levels, different sizes, different maturity levels, and different days of the week that they attended practice! The boys and Coaches talked it over and made a plan. We would train fundamentals first to improve technique and then focus on strategy and teamwork. We had to use games to test our idea, make adjustments, practice, and try again in the next game. This enabled us to prepare for the AISAA Tournament. Dragons played good skillful football and put it all together during the pool play. We made it to the finals, but by that time, we had ran out of gas, and still giving it their best, almost won the championship game, finishing 2nd place in the AISAA Tournament. Parents and Coaches from other teams made positive comments about our Concordian sportsmanship. Some of our players will advance to G7U football team next year and we would like to thank them and wish them “Good Luck”.

Coach Nui

G7U Boys

Through football this season, each player on the Dragons G7U team learned about life. There are ups and downs, wins and losses, and how we deal with them is what makes us a better student athlete and person. Like Coach K says, “the ball is round”. It bounced in our favor in the most exciting game of the year, a 3-2 come from behind win with ASB. And, there were some crazy bounces in our one loss to Ekamai, resulting in unfortunate goals against us. So, we finished 2nd in the AISAA League. One thing that we, G7U boys football, do know for sure, is that we have the greatest fans of any AISAA school. Thank you for your support.

It's difficult to find words to describe how proud Coach K, Coach X, and myself are of you, boys! What a fantastic feat, from start to finish. Not only were we dominating all of the games - but you faced the formidable challenge of keeping mental control in a couple of unnerving situations. This was a TEAM performance! Zen "the wall", making strikers look silly throughout the games by using his strength and positioning himself smartly. Jiho, playing solid football with consistently correct decision-making in tough spots. Our two last-minute reinforcements Pote and Kirk amazed the whole team with their contributions. "Coach Markus - they were really really good!" were Tonnam's words after the awards ceremony. A big thank you to both of you for stepping up last minute - you are already part of Concordian's team next year in the 8th annual SEAIS tournament! Let's not forget Troy in the backline - playing a full 24 minutes in the last two games, and being a relentless defender when needed. Kimi had to go and take care of academic duties after lunch but gave 100% in the first 4 games. Kimi style, he left everything on the field. ASB and KIS were lucky they didn't have to face Kimi "the killer bee" who just won't give space to the opponent strikers. Let us know the good news of your exam results when you get them, Kimi!

Our defense was solid, but our offense was the best this school has seen in my eight years at Concordian. Never before, has the team had such depth in the squad. The speed and technique of both Stephen and Patrick was unmatched in the tournament. No other players came close to what they showed in the 7 games. Patrick managing to score at least one goal in every single game (!). Tonnam, the captain of team, who played his first SEAIS tournament as a G7 and now his last as a G12, showed the team what it meant to give 100% when you feel 50%. Still managing to step up and score each time it was needed (two in the final). Jerry, flying past opponents, netting 4 goals against ASB. Pun Pun saying goodbye to the Dragons varsity team in a solid performance, scoring an important first goals against KIS in the 6th game. Last but not least, our last line of defence - our very own Burger. With his spider-like saves he could manage to save everything in life and death.

Impact went behind the scenes to interview Petch, G9, our world-class MotoSurf racer who competes around the globe.

Impact: Hi Petch, where did you go most recently and how did you feel?

Petch: In May, I competed in the Motosurf World Championship (Round 1) in Berlin, Germany. There were 100 racers across all categories from over 20 countries and I placed 3rd in the Stock R category.

Impact: Some of your classmates told us you had mechanical issues, what happened?

Petch: I was 2nd in qualifications, which was fair, based on how I was doing. The heats were also very strong, I came out of the heats in 2nd position fighting for 1st place in the Finals. Finale 1 was heartbreaking. I was P2 then the engine stalled mid-turn, I was dragged to shore. Finale 2 DNF, I dropped to 7th. AAargh. The team mechanics got to work and got the board ready for Finale 2. The start was perfect and I was P2 fighting for 1st, I finished Finale 2 with 2nd gaining just enough points to take home podium for Thailand. I knew I could get 2nd, but it's part of racing.

Impact: When is the next big event?

Petch: The next 3 big ones on the circuit are: August 11-13 in Sweden, October 6-8 in Croatia, and an interesting one on December 1-3 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Impact: Well, congratulations, Petch, and we do wish you the best for those upcoming competitions. Hopefully we can live stream you in PE classes in October. Go Motosurf Dragon!
