Dear Impact Readers,

I

t is that time of year again! School supplies have been bought, new classes have been formed, school uniforms purchased, and the students are back, refreshed and ready to learn! Summer is officially over! One of my favorite parts about this time of year is seeing our students enthusiastic for another year. So many come back to school and are not only happy to see their friends again, but are excited to start their year of learning! As Nelson Mandela has stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It’s exciting to know that our students are excited to obtain this weapon and will someday use it to change the world in the most positive of ways! In this issue, we will review the last semester of 2016-2017 by reading about the efforts of our students in those last few months of the year including our graduates of 2017 just as they are all now headed off to their respective Universities! You will also read very well-written and illustrated works from our Grade 7 and 8 students. Finally, you will be reading about scheduled events and things to expect in the year ahead ~ Like our new Athletic Conference that our very own Coach K. was instrumental in forming and getting off the ground this year! We have a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to! I hope you enjoy reading a bit about it in our first 2017-2018 issue of IMPACT! I wish all of our Concordian Dragons and IMPACT readers a very safe, happy, and productive school year! Sincerely, Nicki IMPACT Editor

Dr. James Dear Concordian Community, Welcome back to the start of the academic year 2017/18! We welcome parents and students new to the Concordian community. I do hope that the holiday break allowed for family bonding to take place with immediate and extended family members and that the students were exposed to new experiences such as, travelling within and beyond Thailand, going to new places, internships, trying new sports, college visits and getting involved in service activities. The new academic year brings new challenges and the students must be confident to overcome these challenges with a growth mindset, believing in themselves that anything is possible with the right resources, skill sets and approaches to learning and teaching. It is important that each one seizes every opportunity to be successful whether it relates to academic or in extracurricular activities. We look forward with anticipation to interacting with you all this academic year and wish everyone a successful year ahead. Thank you Parent Community for your continued support and trust in Concordian. Sincerely, 6 CONCORDIAN

Counseling Corner

Greetings from

Dr. Tresa A

new school year is now upon us and it is with excitement that we welcome back all of our students! The first day of school saw a flurry of smiles and laughter and a robust amount of energy as students reconnected with their classmates after a long summer break. Teachers and staff were caught up in the enjoyment of the day too! We welcomed several new students to our campus, and I was happy to see Concordian students upholding our values through their thoughtfulness by helping them settle in. As our student population grows, two new counselors joined the counseling team at Concordian: One in the Early Years and one in the College Counseling Department. This brings a total of seven counselors at Concordian! I think this shows Concordian’s commitment to student’s happiness and wellbeing. Beyond the fact that students have caring teachers and staff around them, they also have counselors who are there for those times when they struggle with situations and need someone to be an advocate on their behalf and to provide a safe place where they can express their worries and concerns in a confidential environment. With our senior and junior classes being the biggest so far, it is welcoming to have a second person to help as we prepare students for the transition to college. Every year, I feel a mixture of anxiousness, excitement, and hopefulness with the senior class! As seniors juggle academics, extracurricular activities, college apps and a host of other demanding needs with dreams flying all around for their perspective college, there is never a dull moment. How to keep seniors focused, grounded and on target is something everyone in DP tries to do. Yet finally as we bid them farewell we know that it was worth it all.

We cooperate closely with Parents, Teachers, and Administrators to support the students’ learning and their overall development. We teach Guidance and Counseling lessons/ Values lessons throughout the year. Lessons in Early Years focus on building positive self-concept, social skills, emotional quotient (EQ), and selfprotection skills. Lessons in Primary Years focus on life skills and social skills, especially to help students identify and cope with friendship problems, building positive self-esteem and learning appropriate ways to deal with bullying. The values integrated include appreciation, kindness, caring, respecting differences, integrity, compassion and growth mindset to everyone in the community. MYP Counselors

Welcome back everyone! We hope you’ve had a fun and restful summer break. We are very excited to be returning as the MYP counselors for grades 6-10 at Concordian. This first term we would like to welcome our incoming 6th grade students and begin to build relationships with each of them, as well as continuing to build on the ones formed last year with our returning MYP students. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive developmental counseling program that assists students in cultivating greater emotional well-being, perseverance, self-regulation, and resilience to ensure that each student achieves their highest possible education in areas of academics, career, and personal/social development. We aim to help create an environment that supports authentic mindful and caring communities that leads to positive meaningful action through a partnership with students, family, school and community. Through the health and wellbeing program we will work together with each homeroom group of students in monthly one block sessions while navigating teen health and wellness topics. Please come by our offices located next to the new MYP library, write us a message at the email below, or call the school to connect with us verbally for further inquiries or to make an appointment. We welcome and encourage communication with all students and parents and are looking forward to another great year here at CIS.

Chinese is not required to

enter Concordian from G6 - G11

Do the secondary students need to learn Chinese everyday?

Chinese-English immersion is required in PYP (NR-G4). Forty percent of the PYP curriculum is delivered in Chinese. Chinese is required one period everyday for students in Grade 5 to Grade 10.

Can the DP students (Grade 11- 12) choose optional subjects other than Chinese? Yes, they can. Chinese is optional for DP students.

- Entering Concordian from Grade 6, new students with no Chinese knowledge will be enrolled in beginner Chinese class, whereas our current students will be enrolled in the Chinese class according to their Chinese level. - There is no better time than NOW to invite your good friends and families into the Concordian Community! - New Grade 6 -11 enrollment starts now!

Our First Day

School Update

By: Ms. Rachael B., Ms. Tina, Ms. Alice, and Ms. Christine

I

t’s always busy in Nursery. There are so many exciting things to do and see, as well as getting to know the teachers, the other adults who help in nursery and making friends with the other children. The day begins with saying ‘goodbye’ to mummy and daddy and remembering where to put our belongings and water bottles. (Grown ups call this being independent.) Then it’s straight into deciding which activities to play with, but first we need to make sure we visit the bathroom and wash our hands. Although we love to share things, nasty germs are not one of them! In Nursery, we have routines and classroom rules to learn. This helps our Nursery run smoothly and helps prepare us for the school journey to come.

Although it sometimes looks like we are just playing, we are actually learning so much! We are learning about spatial awareness, fine motor skills, being sociable (talking, playing and sharing together) and how to make good choices. We love to explore, find out about the world around us and make connections about how things work. We go to P.E. every day and do lots of running, jumping, riding bikes, throwing and catching balls and balloons. You might also hear us singing. We sing whenever we can, not just in our music lessons. That’s another way we learn about new things. After all that, it’s lunch time and we’re usually starving. We try really hard to use a fork and spoon to eat our lunch, it’s a bit tricky but we’re getting there. Our teachers like us to try lots of different food and not just eat the things we know we like, sometimes we even like it! When we finish lunch, it’s time to brush our teeth and get ready for nap time. After such a busy day, we really need our sleep time. Our brains are making so many connections, in fact around 1000 trillion brain cell connections by the time I’m 3, as well as learning new vocabulary. Although we have a great time in Nursery, it’s always good to see mummy and daddy at the end of the day. When you ask us ‘What have you done today?’, don’t be surprised if we can’t remember, we’ve done so much!

High School Student Life

From the High School Student Government Officers President: Mac Vice-President: Tan Secretary: Ken Treasurer: Jaokha

n behalf of the High school Student Government, we would like to welcome all students back to what promises to be an exciting and interesting year. We are in a great position to continue enhancing student life in the High School. A lot of the credit for this is on account of the previous High School Student Governments who helped harness the high school students’ voice and improve student life in our amazing high school.

O

It is now the duty of the current High School Student Government to continue to improve student life in the High School. In relation to our mission, our new government is focused on making our high school a fully united community. A united high school is what will make our high school community strong, happy and a great place to learn and call home. While we will continue to have competitions between grade levels/classes, we will also have many activities that require teamwork amongst different grade levels. In fact, this already started on the first day of school with our Straw Challenge.

18 CONCORDIAN

With Concordian International school joining a new sports league “AISAA” (Asia International school Sports and Activities Association), we can assure you of the great inter-school athletic competitions we can look forward too. To help make our high school a great learning environment and a place to enjoy, we need your cooperation. If you have any questions, recommendations or requests, the High School Student Government is always happy and willing to help you. Just come talk to one of us or send us an email to studentgov@concordian. org. We assure you that we will work as hard as we can to make your request or recommendation become a reality. We are also fortunate to have Mr. Robert (Coach K.) as our new advisor. We are confident that he will help us achieve our goals and continue to make our High School a great place to learn and grow.

School Update

Welcome Note from the High School Vice Principal Mr. Rich

With such wonderful students and faculty members, I consider it a real privilege to be Concordian’s High School Vice Principal. My focus involves supporting high school students and teachers both inside and outside the classroom. I would like to give a warm welcome the newest members to our high school—both students and teachers—as they will certainly help further enhance the quality of our school’s community of learners. I would also like to remind all high school students that they are role models for the entire school and should be proud to be in this important position that requires a lot of personal responsibility. One of the proudest aspects of our High School is our vibrant club system, where students can learn leadership skills and focus on developing themselves and improving the community and world they live in. While we already have successful clubs varying from Model United Nations to Operation Smile, we also encourage high school students to form new interest and service clubs. Participation in extra-curricular activities, including sports and clubs, is a great way to develop the whole child and apply what you learn in the classroom. I would like to see all students getting involved in different activities to get the most out of their high school experience!

Middle School Update By: Mr. Bill

W

elcome back to what I hope will be an exciting and successful new school year. As our school gets larger we’ve had to make some changes to accommodate all the new students. First and probably the most exciting is the addition of our two new buildings that give us more classrooms, parking, athletic facilities, and a new 50 meter swimming pool. When the construction is complete, the Middle School will have it’s own dedicated section of the school. We will still continue to be in the Middle School hallway, but we will also be expanding into the Rotunda area. In addition to more classrooms and facilities, we have also increased the number of teachers to help ensure student success. We would like to introduce and welcome the following teachers to the Middle School: Mr. Aaron (I&S), Mr. Nathan (I&S), Mr. Jay (Math), Ms. Charne (Design), Ms. Rachel (Math/Science), Ms. Melissa (Math), Ms. Limin (Chinese), Ms. Hyesun (Music), Kru May (Thai), Ms. Raiwin (Learning Support), and Ms. Sarah (ELS). I do hope that you had a chance to meet them during Back to School Night. If not, please feel free to contact them; we always look forward to talking with parents.

And speaking of talking with parents, I would like to find ways to keep Middle School parents as active in the school as they were in the PYP. I will try and organize activities to explain and showcase the talents and successes of our students. The first two of these events were the Morning Parent Meetings and Back to School Night. Any time we have functions at the school like Art displays, Music performances, and play/musicals, I will notify parents in advance so they have the opportunity to attend. Once again, I welcome you all to a new school year full of promise and I look forward to working with you all to make this a very successful school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Bill Berry Middle School Vice Principal

he following verse is an index of the great achievements of the present Grade 9 Language & Literature students from their summative creative project work late last school year. There was insufficient room to express the broad extent of the talent of this class, but those students whose work could not be included here due to lack of space will be glad to know that this year, the English Language & Literature Department will be inaugurating its first peer-edited literary journal. A strong child born, An old hag dies – Another mathematical cruelty, A sick Ouroboros! Burnt are all senses of hope, None mesmerized by fables For they do not serve the cause. Blind morally are the leaders, Discipline handed out But none returned. Crushing even tenacious rebellious spirit, Where an angel waits for all who stray from the Path But, Tonight, An Exception. Quickly, go, child, With sense and survival, Into land of logic, light, and sound. Guilt and Despair burdens only those who remain, Those who question? Die. Poseidon’s Lament The weeping tide flows smashing onto the crestfallen bay, Briny deep and cerulean, as the moon shines lambent. A young lady strolls to the edge of the cliff way. Sombre and bereft, droplets of tragic drift down her pout – Travestying the shore beneath her, As if grimness has taken her suspense and doubt. Not every fairytale ensures everlasting love, Not every dream diverges into a shimmering dove. The affair of heart ends in numerous ways, but this? The young lady takes off her footwear – Tears still flowing, her silhouette stern in hypnosis. The dead night wind breezes through her hair. “Farewell,” she breaks the silence, As the body of the innocent plunges through despair. “Swoosh, swoosh.” The sound of Adam’s ale captivates with violence, Her last consciousness circulates into spumes. Foams of torment gratuitous, Just as though Poseidon’s Lament leads her to recommence. By Prince Grade 9S

he room was dark. The curtains were drawn to filter the faint yellow glow illuminating the street outside. Anthea glanced at the digital clock on her nightstand, the numbers 02:36 were glowing in bright green. She held her hand up warily, examining her left wrist. Her eyes hadn’t fully adjusted to the darkness yet, but she could still make out the small prints etched on her wrist. 2155-04-23. She concentrated on the mark for 26 a few more seconds then abruptly tore her gaze away. Anthea knew it was wrong and she squeezed her eyes shut, letting the darkness slowly seep in.

Anthea glanced around the neighborhood nervously before stepping into the cold evening. The paved sidewalk was isolated, and the streets were empty. Several vehicles were parked in the parking lot near the entrance of the town hall. Her hands were shaky as she held the cold brass object and she smoothly traced the outline of the key. The topmost part was an unusual shape - a flat crown-shaped plate. It was conjoined to a smaller, much thinner rod, with small incisions and ridges along one side. It was also slightly rusted. Her fingers fiddled with the object and she brought it up closer to examine the small details engraved on the top. There were the initials ‘E.G.’ carved in fancy letters on the wider circular area. She wrapped it with a piece of cloth and stuffed it in her backpack. As she walked farther down Dover Street, she could smell the fresh air, soft and pleasant like the fresh-cut grass. She made her way down the street, the familiar street signs and the laughter of the children reminding her of her childhood. An uneasy feeling twisted her stomach as the memories flooded back, and she quickened her pace. After a few minutes of walking, she came to a halt in front of an old cabin, in the middle of Bitteroot Forest. The sunlight shone through the small gaps of trees, sprinkling the damp ground. Anthea took a deep breath. She knocked twice and waited for her grandmother to mumble in reply before slowly twisting the rusted doorknob and pushing in the door. She ducked the small pot plants dangling from the ceiling. The cottage was in an untidy state, stacks of books cluttered on the ground, outdated magazines scattered across the grimy carpet. Anthea noticed the thin layer of dust gathering up on the wooden floorboards. Her grandmother was seated on her green couch, casually sipping her chamomile tea, eyes glued to the display screen of her antiquated electronic reading gadget. The ones restricted to only the Elders. “Good morning, Grandma,” Anthea grinned anxiously. She hadn’t visited her grandmother in two weeks, which, according to the Scador Child Preparation guide, was ‘violating community regulations.’ “I came to visit, and here’s the book you lent me last time.” She reached into her backpack and took out a tattered booklet: Guides to Scador Government, Culture, Customs, and Etiquette, a more in-depth version of her textbook. Idonia turned to the last page with the exercise, and went over Anthea’s answers, nodding approvingly. “Well, you’re one bright child. Good job.”

She set her small gadget away, and offered Anthea some tea. She politely declined. Idonia raised her eyebrows but said nothing. A sly, knowing smile played on her lips. She went back to reading from her gadget while Anthea fidgeted in her seat. Idonia could sense her restlessness. Anthea had brought her own books, but she wasn’t reading. She was awkwardly tapping her fingers against the wooden apron of the chair. She was silently contemplating asking her grandmother about the small prints on her wrist. No one was willing to talk to her about the markings on her wrist, her parents, educators, healers, even her classmates. They all did their best to avoid her after Maeve’s sudden disappearance two years earlier. “Is there anything you’d like to talk about? You seem a bit odd today.” Idonia gave her a small, encouraging smile. Anthea’s eyes widened in surprise and nodded gingerly. Her grandmother could easily see through her. She tentatively reached for the key in her backpack and handed it to her grandmother. “And about my wrist,” her eyes scanned the date etched on her wrist. “It’s today’s date.” Idonia nodded understandingly. She tried to mask the emotions. “Okay. I guess it’s time for me to tell you the truth. Follow me.” Her voice was clipped and she stood up abruptly, clutching the key tight in her fist. Turning her back to Anthea, she smiled to herself triumphantly. Part one, finished.

far more intelligent. Anthea would not fail her. Not this time. Anthea absorbed the news and nodded. “When will I die?” “6:38 P.M. That’s ten more minutes. Is there anything you else you would like to know?” “Where did Maeve go?” She had anticipated this. The old woman gave her a sad smile. “I helped her escape. She told me she wasn’t ready to die. No one knows about this, even your parents. They all assumed she reached her expiration date and...” she paused, searching for the right words...“was willing to die. Her sudden disappearance caused major turmoil in the Elder’s Committee, but no one ever suspected. Maeve is now safe. I could help you escape if you want.” Her sister wasn’t dead and she was now ‘safe’. Her grandmother had told her it caused ‘major turmoil’ in the Elder’s Committee, yet still offered to help her escape. It felt like her brain cells had been randomized.

“It would result in further complications for the government - after Maeve’s disappearance. Our parents - they were investigated too.” She paused to think for a few moments and thought aloud, “I think I’d rather die.” Idonia led Anthea to her small garden in the Idonia smiled to herself. Her plan was coming into backyard. It was a simple garden, with low white effect. All the lecture, books, money, and time she spent fencing surrounding the rose bushes she had kept in on Anthea. They had all paid off. Anthea would be a delicate condition throughout the years. great tool for the Committee. Smart and quick-witted, but not too smart. Idonia watched as Anthea stared at the different flowers. Only Elders are restricted to the gardens. It “Close your eyes,” she said softly and lead Anthea had always been that way, until now. She took out a small computerized contraption attached to 27 her hairpin; a muffled voice came from within. Idonia responded, “The training went well. I’ll send her as soon as a possible. She had gone through this dialogue a couple of hundreds of times and each child’s reaction was quite the same. The only one different was Maeve’s. She had a different perspective on everything, and always wondered a little too much. Just thinking about the girl brought a scowl to her face as she was reminded with her one and only failure. enjoyed so many things about my extraordinary year in G5, but I think one of the things that really stands out to me was our graduation. The students got to plan out most of the things we did in the graduation show. For our performance we wanted it to be interactive, so we added a Kahoot Quiz that included all six of our Grade 5 Units of Inquiry. We had more than 100 people playing Kahoot at the same time. Thomas, a now former Concordian student and I made a video using photos of everyone in our class. We added music that we voted on as a class for the background. The most important thing about this learning experience was that we needed to learn how to organize ourselves. We had to co-operate together as G5J class in order to create our performance. It was an amazing graduation achievement, if I do say so myself!

My Grand and Glorious Grade 5 Graduation By: Tin

Graduation reminds me of our exhibition, because the exhibition was really fun, and we had to be responsible and independent enough to make all of the decisions ourselves. It was about what we were passionate about, and celebrating our strengths - just like the graduation. The whole of G5 is about being more responsible, so that when we go to MYP, we can be awesome! I plan to use this learning experience in the future because I can utilize the skills that I have gained for future performances and presentations. Again, I really enjoyed G5, and am still enjoying life as a G6 student. I just wanted to thank my teachers for helping us to organize this. Thanks!

K3 Graduation

J

une 7th was a very special day for all K3 classes, one that will forever be engraved in their memories, because it was the day of the much-anticipated commencement ceremony. The idea of commencement, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is “the beginning of something”. Rather than marking the end of kindergarten, it celebrates the children’s transition to first grade, the first of many rites of passage they will complete on their educational journey. We, K3 teachers, believe that the beginning of our graduating class’ “something” is as unique as each one of the children wearing a blue gown at the graduation ceremony. Graduation is a significant occasion in the lives of all the children; a moment of recognition for the outstanding work of students and teachers alike, and, needless to say, a pretty emotional day for everyone involved. All the smiling faces up on the stage that day spoke volumes about the outstanding environment felt at Concordian. The result of this great environment was visible to everyone in the audience. It was made clear that the right things are happening for our children. They have learned to love learning and that enthusiasm and initiative will help them immensely as they progress with their education. More than what they learned in math, reading or writing, our children have proved to be exceptional human beings. They have overcome many challenges and grown into confident, independent boys and girls. Within these children were planted tiny seeds; seeds that we trust have helped them grow into strong individuals. In order for them to grow into strong adults they need roots that are sunk deep in the soil of self-confidence and strong values and beliefs. They were watered with hope, kindness, and love and fed with the nutrients of knowledge, character, and dedication. Our hopes as teachers is that we have contributed to strengthening their belief that each one of them is unique, bright and special, and that nothing can keep them from success. It is with great confidence that we can say that the 2016-2017 K3 graduating class has bloomed with creativity, curiosity, intelligence, citizenship, and leadership. We were very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to contribute to their achievements and are infinitely proud of everything they have become.

IB Retreat

D

uring the 3 days and 2 nights of the IB retreat trip, we the inexperienced members of diploma program, were given the chance to be introduced to the IB program. The first and foremost activities done along the trip up to Khaoyai was visiting the Rangsit Baby Home. At the Rangsit Baby Home, we gave them donations, helped prepare snacks and played with the children at the age of 1 to 2 years old. The children are incredibly shy but cute. When we danced with them, most would be too nervous to dance along. However, after the dance when I gave each of them a high-five, astonishing myself, one of them leaped toward me and gave me a heartfelt hug. Time spent with the children was certainly tiring and at the same time enjoyable. After we were done with the activities planned for the Rangsit Baby Home, we departed straight to the hotel. The hotel we stayed in was gorgeous. Each floor of the hotel has different themes, the first floor was decorated with sheep and the second floor where my room was had the rabbit theme. Rabbit statues, paintings, and storybooks were decorated along the walls throughout the entire floor. There was even a rabbit shaped pillow for us in our rooms. Then on the next day is the day where we spent most of our time in the function room, concentrating on the introductions toward CAS, EE, time management and TOK. Lastly, to demonstrate our learning and understanding of what we learned that day, we were separated into groups of 5-6 people, and our task was to perform a play concerning what one topic among CAS, EE, time management and TOK is about. This trip was very helpful trip for me as a G11 student, it really helped us to know more about our responsibilities for this year . By: First

uring the 19th of August, we Grade 11s got the privilege to meet one of the most beautiful groups of kids at the Rangsit Babies’ Home Orphanage. Seeing the big curves on their faces, their bright exciting eyes filled with hope and love, and their small delicate hands that curled onto our fingers so tightly yet so gently lifted our hearts. We got to tour the place, helped prepare meals for the kids and played with them. We helped the caretakers organize the food, a piece of donut for each of them with milk and water. Then we placed them on the tables of their canteen. When the kids came in, one by one in a straight line, they all gave us a big warm smile and talked to us like siblings would. After the kids ate the snacks, they had a dance session where we also joined in. We clapped, jumped, laughed, screamed and had the most fun we’ve ever had. Seeing the kids dance made us realize how bad we were at dancing, but we tried, and it was funny. Then, we got to play with the babies. Personally, I never had to carry a baby before, but now we all got to. They were all about 1 year old and were all very adorable but never said a single word. They just pointed at toys and places they wanted to go. We were chasing after them from place to place, watching their small chubby feet dance around grabbing those animal toys and bright colored balls. We only had some hours to play with them and then they had to be back to their caretakers. We carried them one by one back to the place in our arms. This touched all of our hearts, but eventually they left our arms, back to their home. That was a very special moment for all of us. We were honored to be a short part of their happiness and for them to be a short, yet meaningful, part of our happiness. By: Mint C.

he IB retreat this year was truly a great experience, when I first arrived at the hotel I had no idea what it was going to be like. As the introductory sessions of the IB were held I slowly began to understand the main cores of the IB and how important it was for us to complete these cores (CAS, EE, TOK). Other than that, we were able to use the hotel facilities and enjoy our time there at Khao Yai as well. I enjoyed staying 37 there over the weekend and look forward to having a great experience in the IB Diploma Program.

his year we are all now in grade 11, this marks the first year of us being in the IB diploma program. In order to prepare us for the year that will follow, the teachers thought that it would be in our best interest to give us an entire day dedicated to educating us about “the ways of IB”, a day to digest all the information, and also provide us with some free CAS points, possibly as an encouragement. On the first day of the “IB retreat” we visited an orphanage called the “Rangsit baby home”. During our visit there we set up some snacks and milk for the children. We even danced with them, although they did put our lackluster dancing to shame with their fiery moves, they seemed like tiny backup dancers at a concert. I suppose the dancing was to tire out the children after their snack so that they would sleep well for their after snack naps, but it is quite a fun experience. After dancing with the children, we were invited to play with the small babies of around age 1 to 2. The babies are not quite as talkative as the older children, but they are very vocal. They never really said anything to me. They were 2 years old, but they were very satisfied with pointing and laughing at things that amused them. It was a very interesting experience trying to interpret what they mean by “ gurgle…, gurgle… * Drooling*, burp”, do you want the ball or the teddy bear child? After several hours of feeble attempts to entertain the infants, it was already time to go. It was a very precious and special experience to us all. When the soft and cuddly portion of the IB retreat was over, it was time to dive into the more complex portion of the retreat, explaining the components of the IB such as Grade boundaries, TOK, EE and CAS. Dr. James spent the first hour of the day explaining to us how the grade boundaries were being changed and how it was going to make it easier on the students and the teachers. Mr. Michael spent a good several hours explaining to us all what TOK was (“How do we know that we know” being the catch phrase), the “ Prime Directive” of CAS experience and how to complete CAS A, B and C. Ms. Baertschy explained to us what the Extended Essays are and how we were to complete them. After all the presentations were over it left me with quite the impression of IB being quite a rigorous course, and I am anxious but also eager to experience the full scope of the IB education. I wish good luck to you all reading this in your IB studies. By: Ploy P.

he IB Retreat was overall an interesting and captivating event for me. I was able to experience a new activity service which I never thought I would ever come across. The whole grade 11 and I first went to the Rangsit Babies Home Orphanage which was very thought-provoking and compelling because we, as privileged students, get to see how underprivileged children live. We got to understand how the Rangsit Babies Home Orphanage operated and as we saw from the video they‘ve been doing an admirable job. After seeing how the organization functioned, we students helped to donate supplies to the organization and then we were able to make a direct service to the children by working in pairs to play with the kids and consistently trying to make their day better. Afterwards, we went to U Khao Yai hotel which we stayed for the whole trip. The hotel was exquisite and had numerous features for us to enjoy. At the hotel, although it was an enjoyable time, we were also there to learn more about our future in the DP. Teachers and counselors were there to make sure that we knew what was coming up in the DP and made sure we fully understood the task at hand. Most of the trip we were learning about the DP and it was not a waste of time because how important it is for us to understand the concepts. Additionally, we were also able to spend more time with each other, bonding and relaxing on the weekend. Overall the trip was an interesting bit of my brand-new DP life. It taught us how our lives were going to change over the next year and how this experience will forever touch our lives. By: Jay

iving in one of the fastest growing countries and one of the most innovated city in Asia has taught me a great deal. From learning from the heads of each department of the “CP Group” and being involved with clients and tenants of the “Super Brand Mall” this internship has given me first hand experience of the real world.

hroughout the past 3 weeks that I have been here, I got the chance to experience and understand the work that each team working in Super Brand Mall has to do. The different fields of work I learnt about consisted of: the marketing team, tenant coordination team, technical team, customer service team, security/cleaning team, and the healthcare/first aid team. What I found about all the teams is that even though they are in different fields of work, they all have to work together to accomplish one successful outcome- if one team is lacking or missing, then the work cannot be done properly. So from my point of view, there is no one particular profession or team that is most significant or interesting because they all play a role in assembling the pieces to create Super Brand Mall. What the customers see is just an outcome from the countless hours in the office, the countless phone calls, meetings, ideas, and failures. For example, the banners, LED lights, stickers, posters, all the advertisements we see on every corner of every floor- it never crossed our minds (as customers) as to how much the advertising team has to do to maintain such an intriguing display. By analyzing the customer’s behaviors, the team is able to use the spaces in the mall to lease out advertisement spots for stores that are trying to promote themselves; like how the advertisements located in Zone A would undoubtedly pay more (120,000 yuan for three big poles in the front door) than those advertisements in Zones B, C, D. The events the customers see for a few days, comes from prior planning 10 months in advance. However, each events do not only consist of the marketing team. For instance, if there were no security team involved, there would be no assistance in evacuating the customers in times of fire, or thievery can occur at any given time when there are many people crowded in an area.

Pheammy

The Marketing department was really interesting because it is related to the different ways of promoting and delivering the message to the target audience. Since it is related to myself directly as I am also a customer, I am able to understand the customers’ needs and wants….This course allows me to step out of my comfort zone and understand how to live by myself independently. At home, I am responsible for certain housework, however, when I came to Shanghai, the first thing I have to do is laundry and find my own food. I have to learn how to measure the actual amount of detergent, which requires few trials. This is a great opportunity for me to prepare myself and be ready for university.”

MYP Community Service

Community Service

D

uring the last week of school, our grade 6’s went to Klong Bangkasi School to paint a huge 100-metre wall. This was requested by the school which made a difference to the appearance and longevity of the wall! It was a very hot day, and we are proud of how our students collaborated together. The wall looked amazing. The grade 10’s went on an environmental service trip to learn about the importance of maintaining a mangrove ecosystem at Bangplakong. We are looking forward to service learning this year being further developed in many key areas. Our first aim is to develop service learning to a sustainable program so that it does not have a one-off visit or a program based on one helping the other. True and meaningful service comes from identifying a community need with both parties being actively involved in solving the community need. Service with all good intentions can have a negative impact on both the community and the organization that we are trying to help. At Concordian, we value our service program and understand the importance of developing a program based on knowledge and principled action. This year our grade six students will learn about authentic service, and how to identify a community need. Skills like research, interviewing, leadership and communication skills will be taught. During this year we will be encouraging our grade 6 students to reflect on their PYP exhibition to see how they could further develop these projects in the MYP. Last year, when we visited Klong Bangkasi School, we met with the Principal and discussed how as a community we could build a program with them. This year, I am proud to announce that our grade 7’s will regularly visit the school to engage in service projects identified by the school. Our students will gain the valuable skills of learning about another community, their values, and develop our student skills in communication, organization and further grow in confidence. This is our fourth year with delivering the Community Project. Due to the success and the extensive projects that students have undertaken, we have turned this from a 9-month project to 12 months. Students have already started their research into local, national and international community needs. We are reaching out to further our understanding of how service can align with the (United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals). Grade 9’s this year will further develop service through participation in the Independent Service Project (ISP). Students will independently investigate service projects they would like to develop this year and will have the opportunity to build on previous projects that have already been implemented at our school. It is an exciting time to be at Concordian as we are now starting to see service projects continue throughout the years and students are becoming moral, intellectual and compassionate leaders in our community.

Nepal Relief Updates

Special Feature

A

s you are all aware, on the 25th April, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Kathmandu, Mount Everest, and other surrounding small villages. It was reported over 9,000 Nepalese lost their lives while 70% of shelter in some areas had been completely destroyed. It is part of our desire and philosophy at Concordian to promote “compassion” and “to make a difference in the world.” In keeping with these philosophies, within that week, we sent out a donation letter along with an envelope to give the Concordian community the opportunity to donate funds for emergency relief and we had raised over THB 626,567.75 fund from our community. According to the post-earthquake report by Room to Read Organization, the disaster devastated Nepal and its education system – over 47,000 classrooms destroyed and leaving over one million students without a learning space. To continue supporting the earthquake victims, Concordian International School is a part to mobilize funding for 50 temporary shelters and 112 solar kits for power supply for the victims at Bhattedadha villages, and to provide funding to Room to Read Organization for their school reconstruction project. “Room to Read Nepal” has operated in Nepal since 1998 with the missions to enhance literacy and support girls’ education. Its core programs are focusing on School Libraries, Reading & Writing Instruction, School Construction, Book Publishing, and Girls’ Education. This fund will contribute toward the reconstruction of Shree Mahakali Lower Secondary School in Nuwakot, located approximately 54 km from Kathmandu. The reconstruction of eight new rooms in three buildings at this school will start toward the end of 2017 and will be completed by the end of 2018. Concordian International School is sincerely grateful for all donations from all Concordian parents, and for being part of our desire and philosophy to promote “Compassion” and “to make a difference in the world.”
