CONCORDIAN

Dear Impact Readers,

H

ere we are Concordians at the end of another successful academic year! While it is a joy seeing your children, our students, learn and grow, I would be remissed if I also didn’t admit to having a bit of a lump in my throat this time of year. We will miss the Concordian Class of 2017, but know they are going out into the world as confident Concordian Dragons who will be successful, accomplish bigger and better things, and carry our mission statement with them along the way. We will miss the pre-teens that have graced our middle school hallways, but know they will come back after summer ready for their next “grown-up” step, high school! We will miss our Pre-K kiddos who are literally growing up too fast before our very eyes, but are excited to see their future successes in the primary years. In this final 2016-2017 issue of IMPACT, you will read about so many end of the year milestones from our Dragons; from the last senior matches, games, meets, and competitions, to final projects and exhibitions, to cool end-of-the-year activities and trips, to finally, graduation! We are so fortunate to have such great and talented students at Concordian in a variety of different activities and academics. Enjoy reading about them and their seemingly never-ending accomplishments in this issue of IMPACT! Have a happy and safe summer everyone! Sincerely, Nicki

oncordian is again expanding. With the new building and sports facilities completing this coming year, I expect for our school to finally reach the maximum size. This will permit us to still give close personal care to every student while maintaining a medium size school with diverse social activities for all the students. We have formed a new inter-school athletics and activities organization, the AISAA (Asia International Schools Athletics Association) to compete with other like-minded schools both in Thailand and regionally. I am quite excited on the progress we have made in sports. Our students have been doing well in competitions. The range of activities offers our students a rich and diverse range of sports to choose from. Much care has been given to the formation of this organization and how it will benefit our students. Now, we have events that minimizethe impact on our instruction time and we have also added events on the weekends that involves the whole family. I give congratulations to our head of athletics, Coach Robert for putting so much effort in improving our program.

In addition, I am delighted to see a steady development of rich extra-curriculum activities such as the Thai MUN. Our school has been hosting this for several years with students joining locally and overseas to participate. This even is getting quite well known through the region and offer an exciting opportunity for our students to compete and network with other high caliber students. We are hoping to expand these events in the coming years. As always, the student academic learning along with safety and wellbeing are high on our priorities list. We are constantly aligning our policies and procedures to prepare our students for the challenges as well as educating and protecting from them risks. You will see additional drills, policies and procedures changes. I thank all members of the school community for putting the best interest of the students in mind, always! Thank you for the trust of your children.

tested to see how well I manage my time for my activities as well as those for my studies. To those who know me personally, you would know or at least guess that I am procrastinating while striving to write and finish this article! My belief in the purpose of the IB program in hopes of helping students become all-rounded students is supported by the fact that everyone is to choose six different subjects to undertake over the two year period. This is both good and great! It is good because it helps us develop ourselves into all rounded students as the different subjects encompasses different disciplines such as language, mathematics, natural sciences and the social sciences. It helps provide students who feel insecure about what they would like to pursue in their future, giving them a ‘taste’ of the difference of subjects that they can choose from. In addition, what makes this a great thing is for those who have clear goals and ideas of what degrees they would like to undertake in university. Thus, for students who have a clearer goal of what they would like to study in the future, the IB program does allow students to mold their choice of subjects into one particular direction that would benefit those most. In my case, my decision to study biochemistry in university has naturally led me to focus and select the natural sciences; namely biology and chemistry (both as higher level subjects).

Sinthu Kosasih

Class of 2011 Medical at Imperial College London

I

never truly understood what the International Baccalaureate (IB program) meant until I persistently received 2s and 3s in my mathematics class in the first few months, something which I have never experienced before. My grades were mediocre and my GPA plummeted downhill. Like the contrast of black and white, the excellent and good grades I used to obtain in my previous years did not mean much to me as I stared down at the reflection of my efforts that was my current grades. Was I cut out for this? Was I used to getting 2s and 3s? The answer was NO and NO. I was not cut out to receiving such low grades. I did what any IB student would do, I studied not only harder, but smarter. For those of you who are undertaking the IB or have finished with the program, you will hopefully understand and sympathize with me that studying harder and smarter is but a speck of the many things that the IB program has taught us.

Throughout my undergraduate studies I am constantly being faced with obstacles and challenges that were not all restricted to my academics; they included presenting research findings, extracurricular activities, and public relations. I often find myself reflecting back on how ready the IB program has prepared me to overcome such obstacles. And as a current third year medical student at Tongji University continuing studies, I look back at how much I have grown throughout the years. The skills and methods that I have been equipped with I still use to this very day to help me become responsible for my own learning that I know will last me for a lifetime.

7 CONCORDIAN

I was never the top student in my class. My parents, my peers and my teachers knew that. But they never necessarily understood why. Enrolling in the IB program is so much more than just academics. If you’re thinking only academics then you’re partially right. The program entails a lot of elements such as academics, sports, activities, community service and various projects, with the main purpose of developing students into all-rounded scholars who understand how to study effectively. The extracurricular aspects make the program more stimulating than any other program out there, and I think challenges students at both physical and intellectual levels. I believe that the IB program prepares a student to be ready for university and whatever comes after that. Hence, it is no surprise to those who have known me for a period of time to find that one of my biggest weaknesses today is time management, something that I still struggle through daily but nevertheless I am still improving. Over the course of the years, I am constantly

Majoring in biochemistry at an undergraduate level at the Imperial College of London, I was not use to discovering that some of my colleagues were either not trained to write proper lab reports or have never written such reports in their life. I felt that this skill, especially in a field such as research should have been taught to students by most academic programs. To this day, I am still fortunate for having the opportunity to attend one of the world’s leading universities in the life sciences, and I can mention with confidence that the extended essay project component has played a major role in my acceptance by the university. My extended essay research topic about cancer has allowed me to develop and demonstrate my passion for my field of study to the university.

U9 Boys Football 2017 The U9 boys of 2017 Were a truly talented football team. One of the best in TISAC this year There was a lot for parents to cheer With a strong defense protecting the back We shut down almost all attacks Our captain controlled the goal with ease Then booted the ball into the breeze We had more shots on goal than everyone Sadly, most drifted up towards the sun The boys played tough in every game They were seldom heard to complain Other teams did whine a bit it’s true We played rougher than they wanted us too. We won our division with not one defeat But in our friendly, sadly we got beat We played tough and strong at 101 With burning feet in the scorching sun Our team was clearly one of the best Better than or equal to all the rest That ball just wouldn’t go in the goal Even when we were on a roll. Grade 3 Good luck next year in U11 Try your best to be one of the starting seven

U-11 Boys Football The U-11 Boys were supported this year by the very talented Grade 4 students with only one Grade 5 student making the final cut! The Grade 4 boys proved to already have good control of the ball, strong kicking skills and a great will to run and do their best! Once in grade 5 these boys will continue to grow, gaining more speed, developing strength and having a new level of concentration as they once again join the U-11 Football team. A big thank you to the parent community and Coach K for the constant support in encouraging these young athletes. I hope that in time the U-11 boys will learn what it truly means to be part of a team and how crucial cooperation and supporting one another is; not only in sports, but in everyday life. I look forward to watching them grow in the coming years! Coach Joao Delgado

At the first day of practice, one brave soul in full football uniform and a lovely smile on her face patiently waited for the others to arrive. We waited. And waited. Just us two for first day of practice! But, not giving up, and insisting that we would have a team, Nattida encouraged her classmates and friends and little by little a team formed. It was a team of “Grade 4 Risk Takers. Many had no intention of falling in love with the sport and were there just to give it a shot. Several were afraid of the ball or going too near the goal post, but they stuck with it. About a week later, we were able to play games against four teams in one day. We improved from the first whistle of the first game. Parents from other teams were cheering for us when they learned that our team was finalized the day before the football festival. We practiced (had a lot of fun), quickly learned the game, and half the team got hooked on the sport. A few weeks later the second football festival was held and this time, the team showed a lot of improvement and their Dragon Force! Goals were scored and we had some super cool defensive moments that frustrated our opponents. The girls have decided to keep on practicing, even though our first season is over. As Coach K says, these Risk Takers really are the most improved team on campus, and enjoy the Beautiful Game. We look forward to next year.

U-13 Boys Football By: Coach Neil

● 11 games: 9 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses. Undefeated. ● TISAC League Champions and Earth Day Tournament Champions. ● Only 2 goals conceded all year. These statistics give a very clear picture of how amazing this team is. The U-13 boys football team had an incredibly successful and fun season. This age level has many boys who enjoy playing soccer but very few who wanted to commit to the school team. However, after a lot of convincing, the team began to take shape. In the end, we had 16 boys for our team! Even though we could not bring everyone to the games (TISAC rule of 12 max), each player still had a role in helping make the team better. The team was made up of Tonkla in goal who made some incredible and timely saves. Tonnam and Pun The first task was for the entire team to learn a new Pun were our wingbacks who scored some crucial defensive system, and they learned it very well. They goals from the back. Victor, Zander, A-Bond, Peak practiced often, sometimes three times a week since and Shoeng Shoeng were strong in defence and August. As a result of their hard work, they won their almost impossible to beat. Seiki led the midfield with league against bigger, more traditionally successful his creative play and was flanked by M (who ran schools. everywhere), Bu-bup and Luktao. Poony and Stephen led the attack scoring some vital goals and were joined by Ton. Last but not least was our captain, Sun, who was a rock as our center back and led the team with his selfless play. In the final six team Earth Day Tournament, the boys went undefeated and scored late against EIS to secure the first football tournament trophy for Concordian in quite some time.

Congratulations to all of the boys who made us very proud!

Senior Dragons Football boys This year the senior boys managed to show their audience what football is all about; fantastic comebacks, excellent sportsmanship and selfless team play combined with a good amount of individual performances. This allowed the team to win one silver medal and one bronze medal in the 3rd Annual SEAIS Football Tournament in Khao Yai and plenty of games during the season. The Dragons truly displayed their strength on every part of the field. With his outstanding saves and positioning, Puthip quickly earned the trust of his older teammates. His job was made easier by the rock – solid defense consisting of Eiffel, Leng, First, Pooh and Peem. With Shin directing the play on the midfield and feeding our strikers Tan, Aon, Jeff and Mac, defending against the Dragons must have been a living nightmare for all teams! We say goodbye to three big players this year: Aon, whose technique and speed are hard to match; Jeff, a powerful striker who is unstoppable on his good days and First, who puts doubts in the minds of every opponent through his speed and fearless tackles. But with the work ethic, commitment and love for the beautiful game that all the players have exhibited, there is no doubt the team will remain strong. With the excitement of the new league and the talent that is coming from the U-15 team the future of senior Dragons football is bright. According to the whispers, it might even be as bright as gold… By: Coach Markus Aon + Tan = Goal

Girls Volleyball 2016-2017 Varsity Girls Volleyball had an outstanding season. They were champions of the Bangkok School’s League, Bangkok Schools Tournament and Wells International Invitational tournament. The team also represented Concordian in Hong Kong at the CDNIS International tournament, placing a creditable 5th of 12, and winning the Plate division. This was the fourth year playing for departing seniors Pakkard, Mild, Sunny, Chada and Mei. These girls, along with May and their grade 10 team mates have taken volleyball at Concordian to a new level and should be extremely proud of the results of their passion and dedication. 12 CONCORDIAN

By: The Swimming Coaches This year we have 4 groups of swimmers: Little Dragons (K2-K3), Blue Dragons (G1-G5), PY Dragons (G1-G5) and MY Dragons (G6 & above). All groups have trained very hard for a whole year. Dragons had participated in many swim meets - every swimmer always consecutively in succession in a row. Most swimmers achieved their targets and showed great performance in every race. In each competition, swimmers did not learn only how to swim but they also learned the value of sportsmanship in fairness, honesty, integrity and winning and losing. We as swim coaches will try our best to improve our swimmers to be great swimmers in Thailand. Thank you all administrators for giving us a chance to be a part of Concordian and for your all support.

A short article from Sunny I am a graduating senior this year and my passion for swimming has never seemed to change since kindergarten. When I was younger, I trained with national swimmers, who made everything so intense and exhausting, but in the end everything turned out fine. This year, the school brought in a national swimming coach, who is very skilled at training. Kru Earth is amazing at coordinating, improving, and most importantly, motivating swimmers. He has patience for everyone. I had the opportunity to train in ABAC’s 50 meter pool because of him. During the swimming season, I had to come to school at 5:50 am everyday and some weekends to swim and occasionally at 4:00pm after school for dry land workout sessions. The swimming session is only one hour long so I am able to go to class not feeling too exhausted. On the other hand, the dry land workout session is after school for a reason. It is painful, sweaty, and tiring! I am glad I am on the team this year because this year’s training plan does not only create discipline, but also makes me a stronger and a more responsible person. A year of training is to prepare for ISB Swim Fest, Marlin Mayhem, and specifically for the TISAC annual swimming competition. My sister (Palmy) and I intend to win as many medals as possible by the end of the year, so we work hard towards it. As a result, my sister and I were able to win a lot of medals as planned and that makes us feel very accomplished.

Besides my stories and accomplishments, another thing I’d like to mention is the overall swimming team. It is incredible to train with senior and secondary swimmers because I got to see various aspects of this united little team. Young swimmers are very engaged and committed because just like me, they have to wake up very early to train before and after school. The integration of different age swimming teams creates an opportunity for swimmers of different grade levels to make friends. Funnily enough, I became very close with a few sixth grade students, who are very interesting to hangout with. Moreover, coaches like Kru Golf, Mr. Johan, Kru Meena, and Kru Aim, really helped enhance the team performance as a whole because they work extremely hard with the intention to make the team successful this year. Furthermore, it is great to see new members joining the senior team because due to lack of swimmers, it is hardly possible to have relay teams. This year Shin, Pep, and Robin joined and it is wonderful to see them improve over the past few months. I strongly encourage students, whether you can or cannot swim, to join the swimming team because it will definitely make your high school years even more memorable!

13

I am glad to be a competitive swimmer in my last school year because it definitely is one of the best high school moments for me. I’d like to thank everyone, especially Kru Earth and my swimming fellows, for supporting me all the way through! THANK YOU!

n February 25, 2017, 18 students from Grades 6-8 represented Concordian International School at Pan Asia International School for the Math Challenge VI competition. Our students looked nervous at the beginning of the day when they saw their competition from 35 schools representing 11 nations. There were approximately 268 students competing in the competition. It was a tough competition but Concordian students did not disappoint. The competition consisted of two rounds. The first round was an individual test (40 questions). The second round is a team competition. Students only competed in the second round if the sum of their individual scores placed their team in the top 4 teams. Concordian International School sent two teams from each grade level (6th-8th). The math department is proud to announce that one team from each grade level qualified for the second round of the competition. Both our 6th and 7th grade teams placed third. Congratulations to Brim, Khao Jao and Keith from grade 6 and Esther, Nicky and LK from the grade 7 for winning the bronze medal during the team competition. Our 8th grade team placed first making them the champion team for the 2017 competition. Congratulations to Andra, Best and Robin! Concordian was the only school that had all grade levels qualify for the second round. In addition, there were many individual achievements as listed below. We are very proud of the students for giving up their Saturday starting at 6 am to represent Concordian and for their great achievements. Go Dragons!

cademics are certainly at the center of Concordian’s rigorous High School program. But to achieve our school’s mission, the High School embraces a whole child philosophy. To achieve this, we have a vibrant sports program, growing service clubs, a thriving Model United Nations program and much, much more. These experiences help complete a High School education at Concordian and develop students and people who are able to make a real difference in the world. Another important component of our High School program that helps enhance the quality of student life is our House System. In this system, each grade level or “house” competes against each other for medals and points. For the second straight year, the Class of 2018 ultimately became the winners. The High School Student Government is purchasing a plaque that will go alongside our Hall of Fame for Academics to permanently enshrine the Class of 2018’s spirit and success in a myriad of competitions throughout the year.

By: Mr. Rich

As you read this, we will have a newly elected High School Student Government in place to continue advocating for High School students and improving and enhancing Student Life and learning in the High School. I am fully confident that our newly elected High School Student Government will continue to build upon our House System and further enhance student life in our high school. I would be remiss if I did not thank our three graduating officers. Sunny (President), Kevin (Vice-President) and Mild N (Treasurer) will be missed and difficult to replace as they dedicated a great amount of time and energy to improving our high school.

hroughout the second semester of Middle School, students have not only gained knowledge from the nine different subjects Concordian has to offer, but also achieved success in other aspects of school life, such as sports and extracurricular activities. The middle school students have participated in a vast array of sports; from soccer to swimming to table tennis to badminton. Concordian athletes are diligent and always try their best despite any challenges. The hard work paid off for the U13 Boys, who earned themselves the title of TISAC Soccer Champions and won the inaugural Earth Day Football Tournament; they finished the season undefeated in all events. We have not only excelled in athletic activities, but are academically adept as well. An excellent example is the Pan Asia Math Challenge, where chosen students from Grade 6 to Grade 8 participated to represent Concordian. Pan Asia Math Challenge is an annual math competition with extremely difficult questions that force students to use prior knowledge learned in their math classes and logical reasoning to overcome unfamiliar challenges. With the strong math foundation that Concordian provides, our students earned numerous individual awards for the first round and was the only school to have all grade levels represented in the second round. Individual Gold Medals: Grade 6 - Khao Jao (Overall Individual 2nd place) Grade 7 - Esther and Nicky Grade 8 - Sybert and Best

Team achievements: Grade 6 - 3rd Place (Brim, Khao Jao, and Keith) Grade 7 - 3rd Place (Esther, Nicky and LK) Grade 8 - 1st Place (Robin, Best and Andra) As Grade 8 students, we would like to pass on some of our hard earned lessons and advice to next year’s Middle School students. Time management is vital, especially learning to prioritise wisely and avoiding procrastination. In class, stay focused as distraction leads to unfinished work that then becomes homework. Ensure your electronic devices needed for school are fully charged and bring your chargers every day. Another important aspect of Middle School is teamwork because collaborating well with others is essential in completing group tasks successfully. A lack of teamwork causes emotional and mental stress that can lead to arguments and broken friendships. Establishing strong friendships is probably one of the most important aspects of Middle School because it’s your friends that will help you improve, grow, and develop as a student and a person.

CONCORDIAN

Although Middle School might seem overwhelming to those who are just entering Grade 6 due to more subjects are being taught and projects/tasks given out, but it is also an opportunity to display your talents and creativity in events like mathematics competition, Chinese Speech contests, Art/Talent shows, and sports competitions. Three years of middle school may at first seem like a long time, however, in the blink of an eye it will be over and you’ll be 19 starting the next chapter of your life; High School.

2016 STUCO Christmas Gift Drive F

ourteen enthusiastic PYP Student Council students (from Grade 1-5) were asked to represent our school to deliver 30 gifts from our Christmas Gift drive to the Concordia House Welfare Centre in Bangna, which is one of the community centres that Concordian supports. Having these opportunities to build connections with our local community really helps us to develop understanding and tolerance. Please read below some student reflections:

CONCORDIAN

● I learned that money isn’t the most important thing. They also have courage, but they don’t have everything that we do. I would like to go and teach them new things. (Aarpita, G1M) ● Even though we did something really small (giving our time), they didn’t waste it. Every action should not be wasted. Newton’s Third Law is true, every kind action has an equal and opposite appreciation. With this organisation, I want to set up different donations that support Concordia House, such as school supplies so that they can have all the tools they need to learn. (Prinn, G5K) ● Today reminds me when in ICT class, we watched a video, ‘A good deed no matter how small is never wasted’. (Kyla, G5K) ● Some children don’t have parents to look after them. We are very lucky. (Dear, G5K) ● I learned that outside the city is a lot different to inside the city. We have more sunlight. (Libang, G2C) ● I wanted to spend more time with them, to learn from them, and have fun. (Angie, G5J) ● I think giving them an education will give them a job when they are bigger, and then they will be able to look after themselves. I learned that some people have parents that are really young and have to still go to school, so they can’t take care of their children during the day. It made me feel good when I heard that because the centre Concordia is there to help them and their families. I hope that we can go back and see them again. (Stephen, G5K) ● I felt sad when I learned that some of the kids have no parents. I wish that one day the Student Council could help more!! I feel sad that some of the kids are sick and have uncomfortable or unhappy lives. I really hope my 20 wish will come true! (Doudou, G4CT) ● I am happy that they had fun today. Places like Concordia House can help stop bad things from happening to these children. I learned the real power is not to be rich or awesome, but to care for others. (Im, G4R)

● I felt very sad once I knew the stories behind the children who were at Concordia House, such as a child whose parents are both in jail. There was also a very small child, and he had heart surgery. There were many sad stories. I think that we should all support their community, so all of the children get a better education and more opportunities. (Charlie, G5Y) ● I saw another perspective of Bangkok. We should support them in education so they can look after themselves when they grow up and have a better future. It makes me sad to know that the welfare center is less comfortable for learning. Their materials are limited. We could raise money for them by a bake sale. (Poj, G4R) ● When I went to this place, I realized that we are so lucky to be able to have nice food, good clothes, and a safe place to live. That’s why I want to spend more time there so they will be happy, because I know they have very hard lives and they don’t have visitors very often. (Kyla, G5K) We are so proud that these compassionate students have demonstrated the integrity and commitment to be part of this learning experience. EPIC ACTION

2016 whole of school FROM PYP STUCO STUCO Christmas Drive thank you!

This year we have a total of 57 PYP Student Council members, students with conviction, who stand firm and proud, and want to make a difference in our school community.

We started by surveying students to find out what action they wanted us to take. We then created 5 Action teams (Green Team, Playground, Technology, Food waste and Events). We worked hard on our action plans this semester and achieved the following: • Green Team - presented the movie ‘Never Too Late’, raised money for solar panels for our MYP library. • Playground - sent detailed emails to Mr. Laurent about ordering new equipment • Technology - encouraged teachers to use technology more and gave them a list of great websites to use • Food waste - developed list of rules that we could follow to stop wasting food • Events - organized the massive 2016 STUCO Christmas Gift Drive and ran a competition about the King. We have more ideas such as organizing a sports and speech competition, and selling tickets to raise money. In the future we look forward to making many more improvements to our school. So far, we have done a stupendous job, but our future can be so much more exceptional. 2016 PYP STUCO

D

id you know that last year we did a Christmas gift drive? Last year our school community donated more than 370 presents that we gave to children that live in our communities that do not have as much as we do, such as the Small Slum organization and Concordia Welfare Centre. We did it again this year. It was such a very positive and appropriate way to focus on a holiday activity, which follows in the spirit of how His Majesty the King devoted so much of his time, energy and ingenuity to acting kind to those who need it most. All Student Council Members, from PYP, MYP and DP worked hard to support this activity to get everyone involved.

1

6 days was all that it took for our Concordian community to donate more than 500 gifts. We exceeded our target this year! This picture does not do justice, to what together as a community we have achieved, or the difference it will make to the children receiving them. We should be very proud of the commitment we have shown. It is very clear that we all demonstrate and believe in our Mission statement! Thank you to our EY, PY, MYP and DP community for your generosity in supporting this year’s Concordian STUCO Gift Drive. Over the Christmas period, these gifts were delivered to many of the welfare centres that our school supports, such as Concordia House, the Blind School in Pattaya, the Small Slum and Camillian Home (both are in Bangna). The rest of the gifts were distributed to other local welfare centres.

School Update

It’s Never Too late

The “Never Too Late” movie was first released at our own Amphitheater on 6 and 9 of December, 2016. Grade 5 students had a mission to open a Solar Power Station here at Concordian. We worked tirelessly for longer than six months, driven by a very passionate sense of responsibility to protect our Earth, and to influence others to do the same. And, we succeeded! With everyone working together we raised B11,190 ( and that’s not including the funds from last year) for the CIS solar power station and B5000 for PYP Student Council! The ‘Never Too Late’ movie was not only created by Grade 5 students, but it has an original soundtrack that is composed and performed by Khao Jao (Grade 6). Very much like the recent documentary ‘Before the Flood’, the 40 minute movie presents a very compelling, action packed adventure that reminds us how precious our environment is, and how instrumental each of our actions are, in protecting it. Mr Yuri was heard saying after watching the movie, ‘That was the best movie I have ever seen.’ And Khun Varnnee was so impressed that she recommended that the solar panels could even be installed in the MYP library.

Ms. Kim (5K) It’s our most anticipated movie of the year… If we work together, we can change the world. I was lucky enough to be one of the privileged to get a sneak preview of this fascinating movie. After watching it, I was completely inspired to take action. To stand up and scream ‘Never Too Late’ (and I think I actually did!). Prinn (Grade 5 student) has brought together a collection of stars aged from 10 to 12 years, who have worked tirelessly together to create this masterpiece. As you have probably heard, Prinn not only produced, wrote, directed, managed the props and edited this movie, but also had one of the leading roles. The other talented main actors; Lina, Kanoon, Book and Kyla (all from Grade 5), alongside the Movie Manager Angie (Grade 5) present a very compelling, action packed adventure that reminds us how precious our environment is, and how instrumental each of our actions are, in protecting it. To top it off, the original soundtrack by our exceptionally talented musician Khao Jao (Grade 6) supported this dynamic team.

This project is sustainable – it will continue into our future. Check out this website for more This movie is well deserving of all the Academy information.(http://nevertoolatemovie.weebly. Awards it could win, and the visual effects are extraordinary. Don’t miss out on this one of a com). lifetime event! Check out the website to watch The N2L team it! . ave you ever wanted to do something fun while also helping your school? If you care about students in Concordian, you must watch Prinn’s movie. It’s about saving the world with the power of teamwork, and it would definitely help Concordian students a lot. Action movies are also really popular and kids would really love this movie! Solar panels are also amazing, because it can help our school generate improved kinds of electricity. Finally, this movie teaches all the kids the amazing moral of teamwork and never giving up. You should definitely watch the movie! You should watch the movie, because if you buy tickets it will go to the fund for solar panels to give our school clean and pure energy straight from the sun. Most normal electricity sources are from fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. Using solar panels will help prevent global warming. The sun was the energy for all life forms, so it is very helpful to all of us. So you have to watch the movie! This movie was made by the motto “If we all work together, we can change the world!” I think the students of Concordian should watch this movie, because they will learn this good motto and will continue to make differences around the world. They will value the motto a lot. Kids will understand the true power of teamwork, and the fact that anyone can make a change, whether it’s big or small. If they watch this movie, the kids will be inspired to do things that can change a little part of this school. So don’t forget, “If we all work together, we can change the world!” By Kyla Jayapurna (5K)

id you know that when you use plastic cups, you create pollution? At our school we’re using plastic cups everyday for drinking. Everyone in school must stop using plastic cups. If we continue to use plastic cups, our health will be really bad and we could even get cancer from the chemicals and pollution that they cause. We will also save a massive amount of money for our school. Did you know that plastic cups have a long life cycle? When it is in the landfill, it takes longer than 50-80 years to decompose. Plastic cups are polluting our earth. Animals die, and our ecosystem is being damaged. Every time we use plastic cups, we create more pollution, which makes our world full with chemicals and toxic air. Khun Varnnee is also paying a lot of money to buy these horrible plastic cups that are polluting earth. Instead of buying these plastic cups, we could pay for another ASA activity, so students could have more fun. Why don’t we install water fountains, so we can use water fountains to drink water instead of plastic cups? We can save our nature and save money for our school. Do it now. Do it today! 23 CONCORDIAN

i! I’m Lina, just an ordinary G5 student. Today I will update you on what’s been happening in our Primary Years (PY) at Concordian International School. The PY has many events going on every single month. Some are big and some are small, some are boring and some are really exciting. This year the PY started off the year with a mysterious event called the ‘Student ‘Council Elections’ I say it was mysterious because no one knew who will represent this year’s student council and the anticipation was killing us! Guess what? I was in it too! I participated in the elections and I was chosen by the PY students to be their president! The student council group and I worked really hard on organising various events such as, the ‘Gift Drive’, where we celebrated Christmas by bringing in presents to school and then donated them to a foundation. We also organized ‘Spirit Week’, where we raised the school spirit and donated money for welfare.

teachers who helped us throughout all the 9 weeks ofexhibition. It was a great experience for me, because I had a chance to arrange my own field trip and mentor meetings. It was also really exciting to get a chance to change classes and explore different kinds of teaching styles from different teachers. This exhibition was really meaningful and we are all really lucky to be able to work on it, because it taught us about real life lessons, techniques on researching, and most importantly on being a good leader. The most valuable knowledge that I learned from this exhibition was to be an EQ or emotionally intelligent student, not a perfectionist, but rather a student who is excellent at academics, thinking, and life skills.

For me, this was the best PYP year ever!! We are all very lucky to be a part of Concordian International School; a school that not only promotes academic excellence but also nurtures young people to become moral and intellectual leaders, people of dignity, integrity and compassion who want to make a difference in All this being said however, one of the most the world. excited events for me was the G5 exhibition! Grade 5 students worked really hard on it. We all did weeks and weeks of research on the topic of our choice and one that we were passionate about. We had mentors and

i! My name is Jinnie, and I’m from G5J. I’ve been at Concordian for 9 years. Every year is an amazing year because I learn a lot of information and every teacher has different teaching styles. This year however is the best year ever because it is the last year that I’m going to stay in PYP. This year has been a crazy year because there were a lot of events happening. For example, ‘Spirit Week’, and a visit This year we also had an amazing authorfrom author ‘Korky Paul’. visitor named Korky Paul. He is also an ‘Spirit Week’ was a great event for our school illustrator! Korky Paul came to our school and and also the community, because every student we learned a lot from him about writing books, donated at least 50 baht and once summed up, we how to illustrate them, as well as how to keep were able to raise over 10,000 baht! Spirit week a positive attitude towards various challenges was also a week where students could dress that we come across in our lives. His personup in different themes for the day. Monday was ality and how he illustrated books was very ‘Book Character’ day; Tuesday was ‘Twin’ day; interesting and fun. Korky Paul also taught us Wednesday, ‘Crazy Hair’ day, Thursday, ‘Career an important lesson which was that drawing Day’ and Friday, ‘Pajama’ day. My favorite day didn’t have to be perfect. I learned simply by of the week was ‘Pajama’ day and ‘Twin’ day, seeing how he drew. He was such a creative because when I wore my PJ’s, I felt more relaxed and man and always thought “outside of the box.” not that stressed. I also liked ‘Twin’ day because I dressed up the same as 2 of my other friends, which This was truly a wonderful year! I know I will made us look like triplets. This event impacted our miss the PYP and will always remember all the community in a positive way because we donated amazing teachers that helped me get this far. money to a charity and improved our school spirit. I

am Praew from G5Y. I am in a process of doing the grade 5 exhibition. I consider myself a risktaker, because I like to try new things and challenge myself, such as giving a speech. In my opinion, every year our school has changed so much that I couldn’t believe how amazing it has become. The yearly changes to the facilities alone are truly impressive! Teachers at our school have different teaching styles. All of our students can feel their passion when they teach us. The most important thing however is that our teachers truly care for all of the students. 2017 Centerstage The PYP Centerstage was where students showed their incredible talent such as singing, dancing, and playing instruments. We had around 5 judges that awarded prizes to the performers for their mind blowing performances. Even though some of us didn’t make the final cut, I believe everyone was very brave and showed that they too are risk takers. I am sure that their parents are very proud of them no matter what the results were. In my opinion, everyone was a winner on that day. However, I’m sure it was an extremely tough decision for the judges to choose, because all of the talents were exceptionally amazing.

G5 Exhibition Grade five exhibition is a really big project that includes all of the learner profiles and attitudes. We literally need to come up with our own Unit of Inquiry, which includes many tasks such as lines of inquiry, central idea, concepts, and so much more. By completing the exhibition, which is an essential part of the Primary Years Program we were able to demonstrate what have we learned so far. However, we got to choose the topic we were interested and passionate about and investigate more about it. Researching about our favorite topic was astonishing, as it allowed us to find the most interesting information and create graphs by using the newly found knowledge. My exhibition topic was “Healthy vs Unhealthy Food”, and my group members were Tonnam, Jinnie and Putter. This was a really challenging project as we only had 8 weeks to complete it. At first, 8 weeks seemed like a lot, but time flew by so quickly! To me, this meant that we were really enjoying it. After I finished my research, 3 weeks passed by! Nevertheless, the most important part of this project was ACTION, because it allowed us to improve our community based on the topic that we inquired into. My action was to improve our school’s snacks. Thus, to make the exhibition booth interesting, we needed to interact with the audience instead of letting the audience read the information themselves. We needed to let the audience experience a real life situation to attract people, because if we simply showed them the information on paper, the audience would not find it so interesting. To attract people, we needed to make a “hook” that was different from others. For those who didn’t have this experience yet, you will learn a lot from this, I am sure.

This term, our school built a new library. This library is very neat, very beautiful, and very big. It has two floors. The first floor has many orderly bookshelves. They separate in three parts: English book zone, Thai book zone and Chinese book zone. The bookshelves are full of countless books. There are Kung fu novels, lyric prose, fairy tales, verses, ditties, odes and songs... There are also many sofas, and the soft, colorful bolsters make readers comfortable. The second floor has many cabinets for providing students a quiet environment to study individually or work in a team. This library keeps quiet all the time, students are light in their steps here, no one makes a racket. As we come in, we can see two conscientious and responsible librarians——Ms. Kathy and Mr. Roxy. They are good teachers at CIS. Moreover, they are good friends of students. If we have any problems, they can help solve everything. Come in this library, choose a nice book, sit near the window, hold a bolster, read steadily. What an enjoyable thing! ● Ploy, Grade 8, a Poem There’s poodle in the library, And many more things. In the books both sweet & scary full of fantasy, star & wings. There are tyrants in the library, And soldiers and wars. In history books that carry, Facts of empires and forgotten shores. There are tables in the library, with lights and chairs too. Working space is necessary, For learning something new. But what makes this place the best of all places? Is the ever-constant stream of friendly faces. And along with every other amazing part, The library is truly a miracle that warms the heart.

● Otto The library is filled with books that you could enjoy. The new library is excellent, compared with the old one that we had. The atmosphere in the library is great too. I like the new library because the library is huge .... so [everyone] can work peacefully. But I hope that the library can open a little longer after school!

● Ken Lemony Snicket once said, “A good library will never be too neat, or too dusty because somebody will always be in it, taking books off the shelves and staying up late reading them.” Though the high school library is quite neat, thanks to maids cleaning it every day, maybe it is just me, but I love to touch the smooth bindings of ancient and new books. Hearing nothing but the quiet peaceful sounds of paper and minds wondering with their curiosity. I urge everyone to spend more time in the library, especially if you are a book-worm or a potter head, and you will soon find the beauty of our new high-school library. It’s quite magical how we may sit in our library and yet be in all quarters of the Earth.

● Li Think the library is just a place where old textbooks and dusty novels are stored? You thought wrong! A place full of wonders and moments of exhilarating exploration. The new secondary library is a haven for creative thinking, research and inspiration. Not only are the students able to complete their homework and assignments in the library, but the well-accredited resources such as credible internet databases and encyclopedias, come together to complete the boundless research journey of a student.

CONCORDIAN

As a tenth grade student here at Concordian, I personally regard the library as a place full of opportunities for students. Additionally, as the founder of the Tutoring Club, and a tutor myself, the library is the ideal place for tutoring students as the resources and the learning environment compliment the studying experience of students. Most importantly, since the tutoring club tutors students from grades 6 – 8, the library is the perfect location, accessible and student-friendly. I would like 33 to thank both Ms. Kathy and Mr. Roxy for allowing us to use the library as our tutoring location. Cheers on the opening of the new secondary library!

Operation Smile Student Mission and My First Impression “It was amazing getting to see an actual surgery being carried out just before our eyes, a site where usually can only be seen in videos or television. For students who are interested in the medical field, especially in becoming a surgeon, this is a great opportunity that definitely shouldn’t be missed out on. Not only does it give us an overall idea of how a surgery is like nor does getting to ask questions answered by professionals, but it also gave us a chance to feel the experience of being in an operating room, which helps in a way to get used to seeing blood and flesh.” Long Long (G 11W) The Four Pillars of Student Mission

Leadership

“Operation Smile for me has been a very valuable experience because I was able to experience much about caring for patients and being compassionate to those who are less fortunate than us. I voluntarily raised funds for the club during the Festival of Love and directly experienced cleft lip/palate patients and witnessed their operations during the club’s annual Mission to Mae Hong Son. Notably, I learned how in order for us to truly care for people and make a difference, we will need to learn leadership skills, because a good leader can lead others to do good, and thus successfully make a difference.” Thon (G 11W)

Education

36 CONCORDIAN

We had an opportunity to participate in the Smile mission 2017. Smile mission provides volunteers with once in a lifetime opportunity to visit children who are not only in need of surgical and medical services, but also education. Most of the patients are minor ethnic groups from outreach Northern areas of Thailand, who lack proper education, and schooling system. Most of them do not speak or understand Thai, making their living condition in Thailand more complicated and difficult when it comes to hospitalization. After this experience, I’ve become more appreciative in the importance and value of education. Hopefully in the future, I wish to initiate a charity project for education providing the next generation of minor ethnic groups to have more chances to access a better education. May (G11 K)

This year has proven to be another fruitful year to Concordian’s Operation Smile Club, as can see by our participation in the 2016 Smile Carnival hosted in the National Stadium in cooperation with multiple other international schools, and our trip to Mae Hong Son. On February 21st, a group of our club members ventured into their first experience with real surgical procedures. It was there that they developed leadership skills by providing support to the children pre and post op, learning about the real life of doctors, and developed lasting, genuine, bonds with the patients and their families. The final event of the year was the Carnival, where our team set up a game booth, which attracted a generous amount of customers. The diversity in the participants was great; children came with parents, friends came together, and some parents even came to play together. These experiences have led us to hoping for a continued spirit next year, striving to see more smiles. Sa-e (G11 K)

Awareness

CONCORDIAN

Operation Smile is a non-profit organization which raised awareness of cleft lips and palates as well as the funding for the less fortunate people’s surgery. The risk of these deformities could be reduced with proper preparation during pregnancy. While the organization organizes missions to perform surgeries free of charge, they would educate the volunteers and the villagers in the area, which they could spread the knowledge and the awareness of the deformities. At the same time, one of the purposes of the club is also to raise awareness of the organization. The donation received by the organization could be used to cover the cost of medical tools, not includ- 37 ing the payment for the doctors as they are also volunteers. Every single baht matters, as more missions could take place, similar to the Mae Hong Son mission. Pena (G11 K)

n March 3 to 5, the grade 10 students went to Khao Yai to visit four of Charoen Pokphand Foods Limited Company (CPF) factories – CP Meiji Factory, Bangkok Produce Company (Sausage Factory), Chicken Processing Factory, and Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group (Lin Sugar). At each factory, the staff narrated and displayed the factory’s background information and maintenance, food manufacturing processes, usage of technologies, company’s exports and profits, etc. During this trip, one of the most important lessons which I have learned is that in order to be successful in nowadays competitive

38

society, the company should be able to follow our developed world and serve the needs of international clients. I recognized that all CPF factories apply innovative technological innovations to produce various types of products with massive quantity and high quality. Meanwhile, the diversity of product is very beneficial. Since one product can suit the preference of a group of clients, having a lot of products means that more groups of clients from worldwide will be attracted. As more clients approach, more profits will surely be obtained. Therefore, I also realized that humanity and development grow together. As more people are born to see this world, people who cannot move on from their old methods will never be able to pass beyond people who have the capability to apply novel materials to enhance their performances.

s a class, we went to a total of four factories, including Meiji Company, Sausage Company, Chicken Processing Company and Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group (Lin Sugar). During the trip, we were divided into groups and each group was assigned a factory that they had to make a video about. My group was assigned the Sausage factory. We were able to tour around the factory and got to explore the 6 different processes in making the sausage; tumbling, stuffing, cooking, cooling, packaging and metal detecting.

39 CONCORDIAN

This trip was rewarding for me since I was able to experience and see the different production stages in the factory before the final product. These production stages are connected to each other so I realized that if the factories are not organized and one of the processes failed, it will have an effect on the others. Moreover, this trip allowed me to discover that the business field is also within my range of interest. I was able to understand the different factors that contributed to the success of these factories such as hiring a right amount of workers in the factory or else the production of the product might not flow smoothly. Running a business involves managing people, maintaining an appropriate amount of resources used, and ensuring that the machines do not malfunction. As the improvement of technological innovation increases, machineries become more important to industries since they are capable of mass productions; which has the benefit of saving time and human labor. Running a business is not simple; the investors must take risks and have a clear and rigorous understanding of the consumers’ needs.

his year Concordian held their Sports Day on the 24th of February 2017 at the new padded playground and mini soccer field. This was found to be the perfect venue given its location, space and on-site facilities. Sports Day allowed children to showcase some of the skills they have learnt in P.E with Ms. Usha, Mr. Tiew, Mr. Raymond and Ms. Ailene such as the javelin throw, sprinting, high jump, obstacle courses, four corner soccer, hula hoop, skipping, duck duck goose etc . Some events, especially for Nursery and K1, such as the sack race, bean bag throw and egg and spoon running obstacle course were considered favourites.

40

This year nursery and K1 got more time to play than last year. The end of the sports day medals made it a perfect day. The kids kept smiling the whole day. This day was made extra special by the fantastic turn out from the parents and the effort and enthusiasm shown by the whole Concordian community.

hat an incredible year in terms of Sports‌ and on that note what an amazing Sports

As the school keeps growing so do our Sports Facilities and what an impact these new Sports areas have had on the teaching and learning in PE this year. Grades 1 and 2 had the privilege of using the New Soccer Field and the New Playground as well as the PY Gym for their stations including gymnastics, muay thai, rugby, javelin throw, dodgeball, races with jumpy balls and hockey. Although Grades 3, 4 and 5 used sports facilities already known to them like the Blue Court and the big Soccer Field, they had some new and exciting activities this year including basketball, badminton, football, hockey, high jump, hurdles race, javelin throw (heavy ones), tug of war and T-ball (baseball). Students demonstrated perseverance and motivation throughout Sports Day! It was great to see so many parents and teachers participating in the activities and supporting and encouraging our Concordian dragons! FUN was definitely the word of the day! Sports Day is always a great way to celebrate all the skills the students have been developing over the year and a chance for our community to come together! I am proud to see how many of the Learner Profile Attributes and Attitudes our students displayed Confidence, throughout the day! Indrpendence

nybody who has seen the Centerstage show, will understand when I say that the level of talent is outstanding! I have had the honour of sitting on the judges’ panel for the past two years and the students never fail to amaze me with their dedication, confidence and pure talent. This year was an especially difficult year to judge as every act deserved to win! To those who did not make it through this year’s auditions: Please try again next year! You were all so fantastic, and some of you were so close to getting through! As with any show of this scale, we must give thanks to the wonderful staff behind the scenes; without whom Centerstage could not happen! There are too many to name personally but our special thanks should go to Mr. Sebert and Mrs. Maricor for their hardwork and dedication for turning this program into a reality.

From the Director’s armchair

here are many theories related to the art of directing and I have tended to use fairly traditional approaches with high school musicals – until this year – with Ever After. All teachers at Concordian International School must set professional development goals for the year. I decided to focus on the stage rather than classroom, with the objective of using a more contemporary approach to directing – one which places much greater emphasis on building the ensemble over several weeks – and to withhold the scripts for a lot longer than is normal practice. The technique places responsibility for developing character with the actor – with very little if any explicit direction on how to bring the role to life from the director. I have to say my lasting impressions of this production center on the strong characterization realized on stage by our student actors. Not one role was weak (in my objective opinion!) and not one actor dropped out-of-role during the two performances. It is one of the strongest ensembles I have worked with – and full credit must go to them, our wonderfully talented musicians and maestro Mr. George, the technical team and Mr. Eulalio for his encouragement, expertise and choreography. s Ever After really as happy as everyone expected? In a hilarious parody of daytime TV, host Monterey Jack Chesterfield Williamson wonders if time truly heals all wounds. He invites Cinderella and her middle-aged ’beauty-impaired’ stepsisters to reconcile with each other after being estranged for 20 years. What about Snow White and the Evil Queen? This hysterical fractured fairy tale has it all: a trash-talking clairvoyant mirror, an unfortunate prince who is turning slowly back into a frog and even Jiminy Cricket — now an occupational therapist and author of the book “My Life as Your Conscience.” The musical is punctuated by questions from obnoxious studio audience members and ridiculously funny infomercials for fairy tale related products, such as the Practical Princess Crown which doubles as a purse and makeup case. Get ready for some kneeslapping and hand-clapping with great foot-tapping songs like ’Beauty Impaired’ and ’Dainty Do-Gooder’!

ttending this fighting animal extinction camp was an amazing and fun experience. It’s a new experience for me, where I not only had fun but I learned how to be a researcher and how to manage my time. This project really requires a lot of time, and I have to manage my time between school work and fighting animal extinction. You can also learn something new that normal students wouldn’t be able to do like a sample plot. I will try my best to continue fighting animal extinction, as I wish for other animals to get included in this project.

he K2 boys and girls of 2017 came together for a very worthy cause in 2017. At our 4th annual K2 walkathon the K2 students walked from 20 to 30 laps around the PYP gymnasium to help raise money for struggling retirement homes in Thailand. The students, with a good deal of assistance from their parents, managed to raise an amazing amount. They raised 395,444 Thai Baht to try to create change in the lives of some of the financially disadvantaged elderly people in Thailand. The Bangkhae Home Foundation 1st branch is the home of 232 Thai elders. The Bangkhae Home Foundation 2nd branch is the home of 138 Thai elders. The Mitrparp Foundation is the home of 110 Thai elders. Each of these institutions received a total of 131,814 Thai Baht to help assist in the funding of their day to day activities and to also help improve their facilities. It is truly amazing how our K2 parents and students could work together to create such substantial positive change in the lives of others.

One of the best things about this event was that, not only did we help people, we had a lot of fun. Students walked, and some ran, between two and three kilometers that day in the gym. The children moved with purpose, and beamed gigantic K2 smiles. It was truly a pleasure to see the K2 students enjoy working hard to create change in the lives of some of the elderly in Thailand. Thank you students. Thank you for your dedication to the cause. You all enthusiastically worked hard to help others. You should all be proud of the great work you did. Thank you parents. This event would not have been possible without home support. The water bottles were a great idea and the marathon bibs were super cute. We also know how much you helped your children solicit donations. None of this would have been possible without our truly awesome K2 parents. Working together we can change lives. It was a pleasure working on this with all of you.

Songkran’s ceremony in Concordian International School was held on Friday, the 7th of April 2017. The Thai department has organized the ceremony for all Concordian students - “Rod Nam Dam Hua” or the pouring ceremony. The students had a great memorable time by pouring scented water on the hands of teachers to show their respect and in return, the teachers gives students advice and blesses them. Due to the passing of the King Rama 9, the extended mourning period for one year, the Thai Department has agreed that we should only have the Songkran ceremony and no fun outdoor activities.
