CONCORDIAN
Dear Concordians,
I
was at Changi Singapore airport last weekend with my Concordian Dragons Athletics Polo on in full display coming back to Bangkok when one lovely lady came up to me and asked, "Do your children go to Concordian? I have heard such great things about that school!" We proceeded to have a fantastic coversation. And, yes, I assured her Concordian is a great school just not only in academics, but we thrive in arts, athletics, and instilling those life skills that are so very important. Why is this? How do we do this? Well, I could speak (or write) all day, but these pages of IMPACT answers those two questions...so I don't have to! As you can see, more than half of our magazine is written by our very own students who reflect on all the opportunities, activities, and life skills they have learned along the way! You can really feel the emotion and experiences through their writings weather it be a WWW's trip, student build, a chess tournament, or even an exhibition, However, what I thoroughly enjoy is asking these students about their experiences in person; Not just listening to their words, but watching their faces light up with all sorts of expressions! These expressions go from heart warming, serious concern, thoughtfulness, and my personal favorite - enjoyment and hilarity! So, Concordians, while we can't include facial expressions in IMPACT, try to use your imagination of what they might be expressing if you were speaking to these young leaders in person; Ask your own children how they felt about one of our featured events! I am positive you will get as much if not more enjoyment from it than I! Enjoy this issue of IMPACT! Sincerely, Nicki IMPACT Editor

Shin in action vs Berkeley. Tonnam looks on.
- FOOTBALL Boys G10 and Under: League Co-Champions!
T
his was the first year for this age group in the new AISAA League. The team played well considering that most of the roster was made from Grade 8 boys playing against mostly Grade 10 boys from other schools. The team went unbeaten in the league with 4 wins and 1 draw. The draw happened only because EIS scored in the last minute to tie the game at 2 goals each. This result meant that Concordian and EIS would share the honors as co-champions as each school came away with the identical records of 4 wins and 1 draw. The Cup tournament was a very exciting day. All the schools came prepared to play and as a result all of the game were close and any team could have won it. Unfortunately, Concordian reached the semi-final only to lose to EIS by one goal when M hit the crossbar with a powerful shot with a minute to play. That goal would have sent the game to extra time. However, it was not to be and the boys had to be satisfied with just the League title.
So overall, the boys just lost one game all season and they did so with a very young lineup so it was an impressive and hard working effort by the boys. Tonkla was a wall in goal as he was last year in U-13. Sun captained the defense once again. Shin was our star all over the pitch. Mammoth led the attack with incredible scoring from his left foot. Nippon was solid and strong in defense and midfield. M shut down the opposition from his defensive midfield role. Tonnam played incredible from his wingback position. Pun Pun played on the wing. Zander, Poom, A Bond and Yang all played well on defense. Best and Kris played multiple positions. Poony was creative at forward as usual and he and Title had some nice goals up front. Pol improved immensely and is ready to be a regular goalkeeper. I am very proud of the lads once again and I can’t wait until next year though it will be sad to lose our fine grade Grade 10 boys.

Winners of the league with trophy and medals after Cup final loss in penalties.
In the penultimate League game, the girls went into undefeated Berkeley and got a shock 2-0 win from 2 goals by Jaifah. That set up the final match vs Wells where they only needed a draw to win. After falling behind 1-0, the girls came back from a Wandy corner kick to pull out a hard-fought 1-1 draw and ownership of the League trophy! In the Cup tournament, they won their semi-final vs Wells on penalty kicks. So they went off to the final to play KIS and after falling behind 1-0 again, they came back to score late on another strike by Jaifah. The game went through extra time and into penalties and it was not decided until the 8th penalty kick before the girls finally fell to a KIS penalty strike that went off the post and in. It was a heartbreaking way to lose the Cup final but the girls could hold their heads high for their fantastic season!
Girls G10 and Under: League Champions! By: Coach Neil
I
am extremely proud of this team for a few reasons. First of all, most of them had not played soccer before except for perhaps PHE class. Secondly, most of the girls were in Grade 8, which put them at quite a disadvantage. Third, they had to push to get permission from their parents to play after school and under the hot sun. Finally, they played tough and without any excuses or complaints. However, this team came together and fought for each other in an incredible way. They listened to what I taught them and they learned the system and what to do very quickly. Besides that, just by themselves, they showed determination, athleticism, aggression, skill, teamwork, communication and spirit that was reflected in the results.
Bei Bei was our incredible goalkeeper and despite never playing before, she was brave and showed off great reflexes. Shana and Sanjana were our anchors in defense and nothing really ever got past those two girls. Finn and Kib were our defensive midfielders and markers and they shut down the opposition with great physicality. Lisa showed incredible fitness by running up and down the field all game as our wingback. Amm and Freya were solid in defense. Momae and Wandy spearheaded our attack with a lot of running and strong midfield play. Pennt helped up front. However, it was Jaifah who led this team all season with 5 goals through her skillful and tireless efforts all while playing through injuries. I could not be more proud of this team for how well they played and how they played for each other.
The goal of this team was defense, toughness and hard work and much to the frustration of the opposing teams, they executed this plan perfectly. The team never lost a League or Cup game in regulation play. Not one. They just refused to lose. Not only that, but they only gave up two goals all season. Just two goals against. That is amazing for a bunch of girls, most of whom were playing for the first time.

his years basketball team was composed of some players from last years team, some G4 revelations but the majority were students who practice football with regularity and only have basketball as a second choice. In the end, the team was made up of 50% Grade 4 and 50% Grade 5 students! Many had never even played in an official game! We started our season with a lot of will and courage but we couldn’t get that victory that we were looking for. The team put an incredible amount of hard work into developing and mastering skills and strategies of basketball. After some close calls, we got our first win and from then on we didn’t lose any games until the semi finals of our tournament. We defeated almost all of the teams that had defeated us during the regular season losing only in the semi finals by only one basket in overtime to the team that was hosting the event! Overall we achieved 3rd place (Bronze medalist). I hope that these players don’t forget how far they went, how much they improved and how ready they are to go for the gold in next years Basketball season!!!!! ow what a great season! The G7-U Girls Basketball team this year was nearly unstoppable. Our Dragons started off hot with a close game against Wells, dropped our only game of the season against Berkeley, and then pulled off the victory against KIS in our final regular season game. Along the way the girls also had some friendly victories against ASB and TCIS. At this year’s tournament the girls started off a little slow in the first game but ramped it up in the second half for the win against KIS! In the championship game the Dragons got behind early but showed their determination and spirit to outscore Berkeley in the second half. Although it wasn’t enough to overcome the other team, our Dragons earned an impressive second place finish. By far the most impressive part of this season, however, were the improvements that the girls made to their game. From dribbling to lay-ups the girls became basketball superstars after practicing hard during all of our practices. From Coach Kim and Coach Jared THANK YOU GIRLS FOR A GREAT SEASON! GO DRAGONS!

December 7, 2017. Concordian Dragons were a massive team of twenty-two enthusiastic students from Grades 3, 4 and 5. We had a successful event, as this was the first time many students had ever competed in any sport for Concordian! Every student athlete won a medal, either Gold, Silver, or Bronze. As a school, we missed out on winning the most points by six points for the G3-U and eight points for the G5-U. We were so close. But, what mattered most was that everyone who wanted to run, jump, or throw got the opportunity. Congratulations to all students that participated and those who were risk takers that took a chance being out of their comfort zone. We look forward to using our new facilities next year, which will include a running and triple jump pit, as well as a 100m lane!! Way to go DRAGONS!!!

ooking back, Harvard Model Congress Asia 2018 was not only a once in a lifetime experience, but also one to remember. Prior to HMCA 2018, I was also a part of HMCA 2017, where I went as a inexperienced delegate. Heading into this year's HMCA, I came in more experienced, and prepared as I was last year. For this year, I joined the FIFA committee as the delegate of Italy, although this was my 4th choice, it was still a brilliant experience, FIFA was a new committee, dealing with the question of corruption and migrant workers in the 2022 World Cup. Surprisingly enough, it was nothing related to the actual game of football. During my short period of time at the conference, I not only learned to tackle issues of global importance, but also learn to collaborate and work effectively with delegates of other nations. People often view Model UN as a nerd event, similar to what I perceived it was at first, however through personal experience I can now confidently say that it is not like that. ModelUN isn’t a conference where the smartest people achieve the most, it is a conference where people who learn to work well with others and understand others that achieve the most. Out of the numerous delegates in my committee, I am honored to be chosen by the Harvard chairs as a recipient of the Best Delegate award, although I won’t be returning next year, this is an experience I will surely remember.

he second Chinese Speech Competition was held in the Amphitheatre on Friday, November 10th. Nine risk-takers from Chinese LA Phase 4-6 and LL classes showcased their learning outcomes from the first quarter to the secondary school community. In the one-hour competition, all of the nine participants delivered their speeches with confidence and finesse on the stage presenting authentic, well-researched topics or problems that they were passionate about. The depth of topics presented impressed the audience. We hope more students can join the speech competition next year!
Kyla (G6K): I really liked the Chinese speech competition because it helped me to improve my speaking and Chinese skills, and mostly my skills of memorization. Even though I didn’t win, I accomplished something, and I don’t regret joining. During the speech, I was scared to speak with a big audience so I spoke nervously and that was something I need to work on in the future. I also wasn’t really prepared because it was a busy week and I only had 3 days to memorize the speech. Overall, it’s a good experience and I hope to join the Chinese speech competition again next year!
24 24
AngAng (G8): Joining the Chinese speech contest has been an amazing experience for me. Even though there were many sleepless nights, it was worth it. I learnt more not only from other contestant’s speech but from my own. I felt that I improved my Chinese speaking skills, but I gained new knowledge from my fellow contestants. This was a part that I would not be able to forget. Overall, joining the Chinese speech contest was really worth it. his trip was an unforgettable trip. Messy rooms, food, ants and conflicts in our room. Every one of them could lead to tears and sadness, but we still love our mates. Something breaks. We all felt guilty, but together we are a team and like ants we worked together, and stuck together like bricks and stone. Economy. Economy. Everytime you say that word cash flies over your head, but on this trip we learned about many different types. Each of the Muang Ka students have their own goal to be good and help others and to reach their dreams. They showed us that they might not be rich, but their kindness and friendship to each other is unmeasurable.
Business there and business here, so many different everywhere! Our guides are volunteers which show their kindness from what they are doing. They love their job and they are always happy to do their work because it is their dream to help students overcome challenges. Reaching a high point on our Adventure Park zipline, we struggle and still go on. Everytime a friend is down, we do not frown. Every step we encourage our friends. We flew over the high rope course, bouncing off trees. Such an unforgettable scene. We learned that no fear, no fun, no pain, no gain. 27 CONCORDIAN

earned about Thai history and the architecture of Sukhothai people. I also learned that the Wat Mahathat temple is the biggest temple in Sukhothai and is known as UNESCO world heritage site. On this trip, I developed communication skills because I need to communicate and cooperate with my group members. By having I&S and Thai written in 1 brochure, it helped me to understand things better. One benefit of learning through an IDU is that we get to experience real things. For example, real life situations and real life experiences. I think that being able to go in and actually touch and experience things by myself is a really good way to understand better. By actually going to a temple and getting to see a temple really helped me see the art of Sukhothai.

irst of all, when we got to Sukhothai we went to the hotel which was beautiful, it had the aesthetics of an ancient ruins with a sand toned stone wall. On the first day, we got to the function room and had team-building activities, mindfulness activities, swimming, dancing, and playing board games. On the second day in Sukhothai we went bike riding to a few temples which included Wat Mahathat, Wat Tra Phang Ngoen, Wat Sa Si Sawai, and Wat Sri Chum. Each temple was created by different cultural architectures like the Burmese, Cambodians and Thai. The third day, we went to make ceramic cups and we made mobile fish. First we made fish out of two banana leaves, then we painted our ceramic cups and they heated it and shipped it to our school. Afterwards, we went to a museum which simply recorded and kept all the ancient artifacts. On the fourth day, we went to somewhere near the airport which is the farm! At first we went to where the farmers planted their orchids. The orchids were HUGE! Then we went to where the farmers eliminated the rotten rice. We got a scenic tour through the farm! We had also collected the duck eggs. There were so much, the guide gave us baskets to take the eggs. In pairs we took pictures on the buffalos. Personally I have never rode a buffalo before so the experience is amazing! Finally, the messiest part was we were planting rice into the mud for them to grow! It was really messy but lunch was amazing! It was super delicious. Finally, we went back to Bangkok and that summarises the trip to Sukhothai!

n Khao Yai week without walls, I had a lot of fun and educational experiences. The trip was worthwhile and beneficial. It was good that I got to hang out with my friends and had a good time during the trip. I think this week without walls trip would be a good experience for all students.
In Khao Yai, I got to do many fun activities. For example: an obstacle course, games, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, create energy bars, etc. The activities we got to do were all fun and things got competitive when we tried to see who was the fastest in kayaking and who could climb the most in rock climbing. We even got to sleep in the same room as our friends! Not only was the week without walls trip fun but it was also educational. We got to make energy bars and build shelters so in the future, we could apply the knowledge that we learned when it is necessary. The things that we learned from week without walls will be beneficial for ourselves. While we learned new things, it was not boring which made us feel like we were not being forced, so we were able to enjoy ourselves. In the end, we got to celebrate with a barbecue for week without walls. My experience in Khao Yai was worthwhile. I recommend that everyone get to go to this week without walls. It will let you make new friends and learn new skills. You will have a great time!

By: Hui Hui, Temmy, Poon, Elia, and Mimi We enjoyed ourselves in Khao yai for WWW this year because it was such a fun trip. We arrived at school in the morning and greeted each other as it was a really typical thing to do. But what isn’t typical! We were going to WWW for 5 days; staying with each other for 5 days! We sat on the bus and chatted, ate snacks, played games, and slept. The bus took around 3 hours and everyone was pretty happy when we finally arrived. The school there is just surrounded by nature; full of greenery. After a hearty lunch, we did some shelter building and long ropes.

We went straight to Khao Yai National Park. We hiked for about 3 km from Dong Tiew to Nong Pak Chi. Throughout the hike we saw very amazing views. The weather was very nice and we enjoyed the breeze. When we hiked through the forest and learned many things about the different trees and their properties. After we finished the hike, we ate lunch and went to the Khao Yai elephant center. We got a warm welcome by a dog named Singto; he was so cute and smart. We did many things in the elephant center. After learning about the importance of protecting elephants, we fed some elephants with corn and bananas.
Day 3 was basically the most adventurous day of the trip. We started off by climbing a real rock. There were different paths you can try to climb. When we climbed to the top and looked down, we felt really proud at ourselves each and every time. We then had lunch and went kayaking. The river has really slow currents, so we enjoyed the view. When we kayaked, we could feel the nice breeze. We just loved kayaking. After we went back to school, we had a Campfire BBQ Dinner. Many people enjoyed going to Burg Barn Buri Farm. When we arrived there, the wind blew gently, and we smelled the rice from the patties. We had a tour around the farm and the designs were just amazing. The farm only used natural materials. I was surprised to see that even the sink was made out of bamboo. We then went to the ceramic workshop. We got creative and created many things including cups, bowls, or even plates with our initials on it. We learned about making advertisement and started our brand for banana sweets. We picked our own veggies, herbs, and other ingredient to cook for dinner.
Day 5
We woke up in the morning and had breakfast like usual. We enjoyed drawing our IDU poster, talking, laughing, and sharing our ideas. After that, we went to the chocolate factory and learned about chocolate history. We then tasted many kinds of chocolate until we got a sugar rush. What was fun about the chocolate factory was that we could draw on our chocolate bar using dyed chocolate paint. We were painting and eating at the same time. We had an awesome lunch with chocolate milk after that. Then, we headed back to school. Throughout the bus ride, we had lots and lots of fun. When we arrived, we were all felt exhausted. Deeply inside, we felt like it was our happiest moments. We can’t wait for next year’s WWW.

his year, Grade 8 went on a Week Without Wall trip to Khao Yai. We gained new knowledge, built unbreakable bonds and most importantly, had fun. This trip was a particularly unique trip since our teachers collaborated with the Environmental Education Center staff to plan our trip. The staff from EEC was a particularly valuable part of our learning since they specialize in environmental education in multiple ways from species of life underwater to the species above ground. Excursions that EEC provides starts from learning how to dive, veterinary studies, analysing fossils and learning all about the species that share the environment with us, and in addition, provide us with all the resources that we use daily.

On the first day of our trip, the staff gave us a brief introduction of this trip. Mr. Alex taught us the basics to scuba diving and some hand signals. We were then separated into groups and each group’s instructor explained in more depth about scuba diving. After all questions were answered, we transported to the swimming pool where we were actually able to practice scuba diving. The instructors allowed us to assemble the scuba tank while they assisted us when we were trouble. On the next day, some of us went river diving to collect invertebrates while others worked on the river water investigation and also collected some invertebrates in shallow water using a net. The river diving team ended up collecting mostly molluscs while others ended up collecting a larger variety of invertebrates. We determined these invertebrates with a chart where we were able to differentiate between different species of sea creatures. This activity allows us to be able to analyze the water quality and how it affects the invertebrates living there.
The last few days, we spent a whole lot of time in the elephant sanctuary. One thing that we did was analyse the health of the elephants. We worked with elephant blood, analysing cells and the elephant dung for parasites. With the help of our class, we managed to raise a total of 2,764 baht for medicine, and we fed it to the elephants along with bananas and corn. We set up tents with our friends and had fun at a late night campfire with a small talent show later. We reflected on our whole trip which made our week extremely surreal. We were all amazed at how fast the time we spent in Khao Yai went. We truly had a chance to bond with classmates, get closer to teachers and get to know the people who work in such a large scale organization. We are all incredibly thankful that we had the chance to learn about the environment and the world around us.

felt very grateful to be a part of the WWW 2017 trip in Vietnam. At first, I never thought Vietnam would have any attractive sights for a tourist like me since its weather and places are similar to Thailand. Apparently, I was wrong. What I found in the trip was the historical places that have their own beauty and story, and the view in Hoi An was my favorite. The city was ancient and unique in its style. It gave me the feeling of pure Vietnamese. In addition, the seafood and Pho in Vietnam was very fresh and delicious. Further apart, throughout this trip, I had lots of chances to talk with a younger grade student. Even though the weather during the trip was rainy and we missed lots of places to go, we got to spend time in the hotel doing activities with friends and other grades. I felt that I was now closer and bonded more with them. Lastly, the Vietnam trip not only gave us the opportunities to view more of the world, but it also made us learn to see positive things from the bad days like how I learned to make new friendships with others, instead of being moody toward the weather.

verall, the school build trip was amazing,. It was one of the the best moments of my 2017 school year – a trip of a lifetime. As a group of teenagers who came from a wealthy background, we learned, felt, and experienced the lifestyle of a northern Thailand tribe, in which we saw the difficulty they have to face in their daily lives. A hot shower or a comfortable bed is merely an important aspect to happiness. I gained sympathy for the villagers since their life is so much more difficult than ours. Their food supply and earning are very limited. I believe the class of 2019 wanted to return something back to the community, and to do so, we passionately built up a school so that children of the tribe will gain access to education to use them By: Ploy P., Grade 11 in the future. efore the School build we had to fundraise money so that we could buy materials for the The school build gave us one of the most precious construction of the school. To raise money, we opportunity, which was an opportunity to bond and to get to know each classmate better. The class of made home made soap and bath bombs to sell 2019 is a big class and not everyone knows every in the lobby. In the process of making the soap classmate very well. The trip magnified our unity, I recognized the benefits of working as a group. and made some classmates that are not so close to By working as a group we were able to use each other closer. In total we made around I value very much. 200 bars of soap and 100 bath bombs. Besides from having bake sales, we also had a school lock-in and an Escape room. To prepare for the escape room we had to move lockers from the SAT building to the new building. This took the effort of 3 to 4 people to move one set of lockers. The construction of the escape room took a lot of commitment and time because it took around a week, but I felt that it was worth the time because all of the money that we made will be going to a build a school that will help the children there many years. After all the bake sales and activity we raised a total of 450,000 baht for the school build!

would not call it a memorable trip, but an experience of a lifetime. Not everyone has a chance to do such things. The school build trip is truly a trip that does not only bond us together but also allowed us to realize how fortunate we are. We, as a class, became even more united, and we were able to complete all the construction work within 3 days. Although it is not easy to work in the sun for 10 hours every day, sleep in a tent for 3 days, trek up to the village for 2 hours, and be 4G free, everyone did not complain because we understood that we are committing for a good cause. One challenge that I faced was that as the
wall was stacked higher, I could not drill it anymore because I was not that tall. At this point, I had to give all the drillers to the tall peeps to do. I then became the one who had to hold the wood up for others to drill. This taught me that one cannot do everything alone because everyone has different skills and abilities. When many talents are together we can establish teamwork--- when there is teamwork, there is a success. From this trip, I believe that education is the most important thing that will drive the country forward. Without education, we can never achieve the future; this is why the school encourages us to go to Mae Ai and bring a new life to the children up there. To end with, I would like to recall two famous quotes,
“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” -Ronald Reagan, and
“Never get tired of doing little things for others, sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts.” -unknown.

oncordian International School has successfully conducted the first exchange program with the No. 2 High School of East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China on October 14-28, 2017. The No. 2 High School is one of the top four most prestigious high schools in Shanghai which is famous for its science program, great facilities and most selective students nationwide. Thirteen grade 9 Concordian students studied together with Chinese students in normal subject classes, attended Chinese cultural activities everyday, showcased Thai traditional performances and explored Shanghai and cities nearby on weekends. Beibei: Provided with the vast, inevitable opportunity as an exchange student to Shanghai’s best middle school was a memorable experience. This opportunity encouraged me to come out of my comfort zone, meeting new people and developing new relationships; to experience various different cultures; to explore and learn more about the distinct people and environment I am living and surrounded within.
Jonas: The Student exchange program at Shanghai has been a very special and memorable experience for me. The first week was a bit frustrating while trying to fit into the schedule where they have a 2 self study blocks from 6-8pm. It was quite hard for us to understand the classes too while everything is in Chinese except for a few subjects. But, I am able understand more about the learning environment that the students they have and more about the Chinese culture. Hangzhou-food Museum

Paopao: Shanghai Exchange Program starts from October 14 to 28 (2 weeks). Everything starts at 7:50 in the morning and end at 21:30. Each block has 40 minutes with 10 minutes break between blocks, and a 6-8pm self-study. This is because they want to make sure students are not bored of the class so they can gain knowledge, or else they won't gain knowledge when bored. From this, we were able to experience how the students in China learn, directly reflecting on how the Chinese educational system works. In our school, we rely on technology in most of the subjects, but in China students still use pen and books to learn. They also have to finish all the homework during the self-study. Overall, this is a very nice Exchange Program. Hangzhou-Xixidi Park

High School Student Life Article By: High School Student Government
O
ur High School Student Government and High School Clubs have continued to help make student life for our high school students vibrant and exciting. The High School Student Government, led by Mac, Tan, Jaokha and Ken, have run two successful Spirit Weeks that were full of fun activities and excitement. They also organized and led two Sports Days during the first semester, which allowed students to compete in a friendly competition within our well-established House System. Indeed, there are activities running nearly every week that have provided an opportunity for high school students to have fun outside of the classroom.
In addition to this year’s highly active High School Student Government, we have many successful High School clubs where students have actively pursued their passions. For example, The Model United Nations club has already participated in several conferences, including a highly successful Harvard Model Congress Asia Conference, and is excited to play an instrumental role in helping to host the fifth annual THAIMUN Conference at the end of March. Operation Smile went on a highly successful mission to Mae Hong Son and Habitat For Humanity went on a mission to build homes during a weekend after Chinese New Year. Many other clubs also did amazing work and allowed students the opportunity to explore their interests outside the classroom. More of these specific activities will surely be covered with greater detail in a future Impact Magazine article!
57 CONCORDIAN
At the time of publication, activities of the Student Government and our clubs is still ongoing and more House activities such as a Talent Show are being planned in conjunction with our Middle School Student Council. Additionally, we can count on our many clubs continuing to design and implement fun and meaningful learning opportunities for our High School Students.

Ms. Zoe - Middle School Student Council Advisor This year, the MYP student council has played a big role in coordinating activities and speaking on behalf of the MYP student body. We have started the year by presenting the “News of the Week” during Monday morning assemblies to encourage students to be more knowledgeable to what’s happening in the world. MSSC have also submitted amendments to help improve the MYP student life. Aside from the activities that we have arranged during the first semester, we still have many more to come this second semester. I am very grateful to have Ms.Mari sa a n d 2 3 s t ud e n t co un ci l members running the MSSC this year, thank you all for all your dedications and hard work.

Ms. Marisa - Middle School Student Council Co-Advisor What a delightful time we have spent with this year’s group of enthusiastic students, such as having fun practising the festival of love “kindness boomerang” skit together. I also have had a particularly enriching experience assisting Ms. Zoe and learning from her vast prior experience of efficiently guiding a student government. I believe that being part of the student council team offers up an opportunity of growth for all involved, whether it is from the 8th grade government leaders to the 6th & 7th grade homeroom representatives, every opinion and perspective counts. Sometimes the votes come quite close and it’s exciting to see the outcome! I would like to encourage those that are passionate to participate to volunteer and pursue the process in joining the student council in the future.
Zander Hello to all students, faculty and staff. My name is Zander, I am currently in 8th grade and I am the president of the middle school student council. My role as president requires me to make important decisions, approve/disapprove of ideas and share ideas just like every other member. As president I want to contribute rational ideas and help improve student life. Student life in Concordian is academically challenging for many students. Which is why a lot of the student council events such as the dance or spirit week are put in place, they may relieve stress. We also created a news board for our hallway that would have information posted and it shows our teamwork and dedication since a lot of effort was put into creating it. Sport day events are also organized by us, and we plan each day in spirit week like “meme day”.If you have any suggestions or ideas to improve our MYP student life then please let any of the student council representatives know, we will be more than happy to help.

Momae Hello my dear students and teachers, I am Momae, and I am in grade 8. My role in the student council is a Vice President. As the Vice President, I help the MYP student council make decisions as a whole. I like to keep the student council organised and efficient. I also like to be a great role model for all students.
Khaojao My name is Khaojao, and I am a student representative of G7S. I volunteer to help with some of the events arranged by the student council, and I help ask my class about the different ideas that they would want us to do or improve.
During the first semester one of the coolest events that the student council had managed to bring to middle school was “Halloween day”. Of course it isn’t just some boring dress-up scary day. Those who do not enjoy dressing up could contribute to their house teams. The first activity we had was ‘Guess the candies’, in this activity the individual who have guessed the correct amount of candies got to bring home a large pack of more than 200 pieces of candies and yes we had 2 winners who guessed the exact correct number!!! Another activity was the “Candy Scavenger Hunt”, this activity helped each house build team-work because it included members from g.6-8. In this activity each house had to solve a riddle together to find the hidden candies around the school. The student council the counted then wrappers and added points to each successful house. We are very happy that MYP students enjoyed the activities arranged by the student council.
During this year of being a MSSC member, I learnt to communicate my ideas with others, and I had a lot of fun with everyone. I really liked how we stayed until evening for Back to School Night and how we got to organize the intramurals. Kyla My name is Kyla and I’m a student representative from G6K.I try my best to contribute during meetings, and I volunteer to speak for student council during the morning assemblies.

Our Freaky Fun Festival was a huge success thanks to the help of our parent community who had helped with seeing that our hallways and doors were decorated in a fun and scary way!
Our parent community also worked together to help organize our “EY Fun House” that had many fun games, crafts and activities that the students all enjoyed.
In November, it was time to celebrate Loy Krathong. The students all made Krathong’s and enjoyed having their parents come and help in the making of their Krathong’s followed by a trip to our pool to float the Krathongs.

ll the grade 9 students along with the supervisors met in the library on the 29th of September for a super-charged day of learning, team building, planning and camaraderie. The morning was spent understanding the concept and requirements for the Independent Service Project (ISP). Students were introduced to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and asked to consider how those goals could be used in their ISP and how to create a change. A hilarious game of ‘Ships and Sailors’ helped to burn off some energy and focus everyone for the afternoon sessions. Students identified common areas of interest amongst themselves to form their ISP groups and supervisors were selected based on expertise. Then it was time to start the real work!
On the second Service Learning Day students really consolidated their ideas and made some concrete plans for action. I am so proud of the hard work that all groups have been doing and the amazing variety of actions being undertaken including using drama, art, technology, research and hands-on actions to advocate for change and target the SDGs identified. The next steps are coming to fruition now with some trips outside school planned for the coming Service Learning Day. The exhibition for grade 9 ISP will be held in March when all groups will showcase their projects and discuss their actions. I am looking forward to seeing how all these amazing projects culminate and hearing the stories behind the actions from this dynamic group of students. By: Ms. Kylie

Matmee Today, September 29th, we planned service learning at Concordian International School. This was challenging because we needed to work with new people because this service group is a mixture of all the G6 students. We might not get along that well. One example of this challenge was when we needed to communicate to flip the tarp around without standing on the ground. On top of each tarp there would be about 5-6 students so it really required a lot of teamwork to flip the tarp. I felt really happy and also excited because this is my first year ever doing the service day, and I feel like it is really fun to do. I learned that I need to improve at communicating due to not communicating in class a lot. I can improve at being braver in the future by being a risk-taker and being more confident about myself. As a result of all the experiences described above, one service learning outcome I met today is demonstrating how to initiate and plan a service learning experience. I satisfied this outcome when I was aware of roles and responsibilities when designing an individual or collective service learning experience. To sum up, I really had a good time in this service learning. I was really happy with this first time experiencing what service learning looks like and what do we need to do on this day.
Kyla Today, we planned our service learning kits, brainstormed, played tarp games, and did role plays at Concordian international school in the MYP function room. This was challenging because sometimes we didn't agree, and we were fighting over who presents. One example of this challenge was that no one wanted to present, so our teacher Ms. Celina said that the person who did the least work will present. With that, everyone was very productive and participated well. I felt really happy about today because it was so fun! At first I wasn't really pleased with my group members, but after actually doing the activities, it was really fun and I learned to love my group. I learned that I need to improve at being an actor. I wasn't a very good actor. I can improve at being confident in the future by trying new things and practicing with other people. As a result of all the experiences described above, one service learning outcome I met today is demonstrating how to initiate and plan a service learning experience. I was satisfied this outcome by working really hard. I participated a lot throughout the activity and improved my communication and group work skills. In Conclusion, today was really fun, I really enjoyed the role play and all the other activities, and I hope I get to do this again!

NC On September 29th, we did some service day activities at Concordian International School such as a role play. This was hard because it was connected to leaders and there were followers with different personalities. The leaders had to get all of them to agree on 1 thing. One example of this challenge was when I was the leader, I had to try and make everyone agree on going to France. The rest chose personalities. I know it’s hard to convince everyone as the leader but eventually I got everyone to agree with me. I felt excited because I liked the activities that we did (especially the leader thing). I learned that I need to improve at thinking before I speak due to the fact that sometimes I say stuff that I didn’t plan on saying. I can improve at cooperation in the future by working with my teammates. As a result of all the experiences described above. One service learning outcome I met today is demonstrating how to initiate and plan a service learning experience. I satisfied this outcome when I came up with the idea to make a mini beach for the school build challenge.
Lina Today, we worked on our service learning plan for the Grade 11 “building school project” at the function. I really liked the activities in the morning when we had a chance to roll play. We also played the tarp game. This game is to help building communication and group work skills. The best part of the day was when I got to start on the plan for the snake and ladder game. Kyla and I finished 30 math questions for the game! This was challenging because we have to agree on a subject to create the games for it. One example of this is Tin Tin and some other students wanted to create supplies for the subject PE, but Kyla, Tonnam and I wanted to create supplies for Math. I learned that I need to improve at encouraging others into conversations and be a better leader. I can improve at my participation skills in the future by contributing more in the conversations. As a result of all the experiences described above, one service learning outcome I met today is demonstrating how to initiate and plan a service learning experience. I satisfied this outcome because I worked really hard and communicated really well with my group members. In conclusion, I am very happy to be a part of the service day, because I had learned about how to be a good leader and have good leadership skills.

JJ Today, we researched to prepare for the project that Ms. Henson briefed us for because we are going to make something for the kids in Chiang Mai in the MYP function room. This was challenging because some of us didn’t agree with our group leader because it was hard to do everything right. One example of this challenge was not everyone agreed with everyone’s ideas, so people were hard to persuade to agree with my idea. I learned to use leadership behaviors to persuade people to agree with my ideas. I can improve at speaking because sometimes I speak too loudly and no one could hear anything. As a result of all the experiences described above, one service learning outcome I met today is demonstrating how to initiate and plan a service learning experience. I satisfied this outcome because I researched about countries in the world and the famous places that make that country unique. To sum up, I learned a lot of useful leadership skills and behavior that made me smarter.
MY Service Day Reflection - My 2/11/17 (2nd Day of Service Learning) Learning 1. How did today’s projects help you better understand service? It helps me better understand service by “telling” me what others can and cannot afford, and how we can help them by developing and finishing the activity that my group and I decided on. 2. What skills did you develop or improve on? I developed the skill of cooperation because we had to work in teams, decide on ideas, and help each other do work! 3. What did you learn about yourself and working with others? I think I learned that I help others very well when in groups, and I think I am really productive. I use time very wisely so me my group and I finished our work faster and with quality. 4. Did you have any disagreements? If so, how did you r esolve it? We didn’t really have any disagreements because we all agreed on a certain one that is more reasonable and smarter, every time. 5. How would you describe today’s experience? I would describe today’s experience by saying that today was pretty AWESOME because we finished work fast and we also finished it with high quality. And I would also describe today as FANTASTIC because there were some funny moments like when one of my team members did something hilarious etc. 6. What do you think is the best part about service learning? Why? I think the best part of service learning is when you can work with other teammates and also listening to my team members’ jokes. Working with others can help us develop our open-mindedness and listening to team members’ jokes can help us feel less stress (it’s actually not stressful at all). It also helps us generate laughter. Jade
Jade Today, we did our service learning plan for at the MYP function room at Concordian International School. This was challenging because we needed to agree on one topic to do the learning kit. Also, one example that was challenging is we needed to do the tarp challenge. Everyone had to be on the tarp and use only your feet to flip it to the other side when our feet had to remain on the tarp at all times. I felt that today was a fun day because we had a lot of fun activities to keep us from getting bored such as the trap challenge and the acting. I learned that I need to improve at being a leader and volunteering more for leadership roles because when we were doing the leader activity it was challenging to get my peers to agree with me. I can improve by being a better leader in the future by volunteering to be a leader more often. Normally I don’t really like to be a leader in a big group, but if we are in a group of 2 or 3 I am mostly a leader. Today, I did “suggests creative ideas, proposals or solution” because today when we were discussing leadership. I gave a lot of interesting ideas, and when we were talking about how to deal with distracted people I gave a lot of ideas on how to deal with it. In conclusion, today was a very fun day because we had a lot of challenging activities and fun activities. Meg How did today’s projects help you better understand service? Today’s projects helped me better understand service by making me learn more about how much time and effort it takes to finish a project. What skills did you develop or improve on? I improved on my skill to have creativity by creating a learning game for small kids. The game that my group and I made is for little kids is to recognize different colors and we needed a lot of creativity to create a game that little kids will enjoy. What did you learn about yourself and working with others? I learn that I can work very well with others and myself. In process of making this game, I tried to do the most of the work I could do for my groups as much as possible. My group also assigned work that I needed to do and I did it individually. When my group needed me I was there. Did you have any disagreements? If so, how did you resolve it? In my group, we had some disagreements on what game should we make, but in the end we did a vote and vote on the game that we liked the most.
What do you think is the best part about service learning? Why? I think the best part about service learning is how we could make games for kids that have no opportunity to do this themselves.

How would you describe today’s experience? Today’s experience was amazing because it made me feel like it was Grade 5 exhibition again. In Grade 5’s exhibition, we did a lot of building and making props for our Grade 5 exhibition. How did you help with the project planning and action plans? I helped with the project planning and action plans by talking with my group and planning out what is our next plan was and how could we do it.

uring our preparation of the Northern Thai dance for the Loy Krathong ceremony, we worked hard and tried our best to make the dance turn out as beautiful as possible. We practiced for about 2 weeks with Kru May, our Thai teacher who taught us all the dance moves. The Thai dance that we performed was a traditional dance from Northern Thailand called "Fon Leb" which means "Nail Dance" in English. The most significant thing about this type of dance are the nails that the dancers have to wear. The nails are made out of metal and painted gold and were around 5-6 centimetres long. The dancers have to wear the nails on all fingers on both hands except for the thumbs during the performance. My friends who also danced and I found it quite a struggle to handle with the nails because they were hard to handle. They often fell off, got tangled together, and got stuck in our hair.
Our whole outfit and look that day was based on how the Northern people dressed when performing these traditional dances. We had to wake up early on the day of the performance to get dressed and do our makeup. Our make up and hair were done by professional artists and hair stylists, which made them turn out very beautiful. We wore long sleeves, button up, northern style shirts and traditional Thai silk skirts which are called "Pa Sin" in Thai. The skirts were quite tight and hard to walk in because of the length and how we wore them. While we were doing our performance, we weren't wearing our shoes because for the Thai traditional dance, we have to dance with bare feet. Lastly, I’ve gained a wonderful experience of learning Thai performance and appreciation of our Thai Culture for this special occasion. By: Nicha Grade7

Several meetings were held prior to the event day, which included both in-school and out-of-school meetings. For this year’s booth, we decided to do face painting and a ball throwing game. This project required a lot planning and collaboration, including finalising the activities that we were going to do, selecting face paint ideas that matched with our ability, and preparing the materials. Even though the event was only one day long, we spent several weeks preparing for it during our own free time. On the day of the event, we had to work together as a team to set up and decorate our booth in the morning, and then divide up the work on who's going to be in charge of which activity. We divided up into two teams,
the ball throwing game team and the face paint team. However, there were times that we were overloaded with customers, and the people from the other team came to help. So, in the end everyone was helping each other out and were busy all day long. Most of us had never done face painting before, and so we were all really nervous in the beginning, but it went pretty well and the kids were pleased when they saw how the designs turned out on their faces. This made us all glad. We felt encouraged. It was a wonderful experience, getting to take new challenges and develop not only our art skills, but also collaboration and organisation skills. Yet most importantly, we had fun working with each other and seeing those smiles on the little faces.

s part of our UOI 4 about How We Organize Ourselves, we had to create a social enterprise/business. As a whole class we formulated a business plan and presented it to our bank (our teachers) to get approval for funding. We had to practice working together to resolve conflicts and differences of opinion. We had to plan our expenses, calculate expected gross profit and net profit; and organise materials as needed. Last Friday was a challenging, but fantastic experience for us to develop a better understanding of how economic systems are established, and to support a great cause. This year, we worked hard to make our business sustainable.

- Making our world a better place through enterprise: UOI 4 Festival of Love Sustainable development and sustainable living are where you develop things and live without hurting the world so that our future generations can live in a clean, green world. Grade 5 learned that creating a business no longer just about making a profit. We all have a responsibility to make sure that every business is sustainable. This means that every business must help to make their community stronger and not hurt our earth. Our businesses were sustainable in that we tried to not use plastic or waste resources (goal #11, 12, 13, 14 and 15) and even met one of the goals # 8 - decent work and economic growth! We encouraged each other to do our best. We also raised money to help reduce inequalities (goal #10), and provide quality education (Goal #4) to the Muang Ka School in Chiang Mai, that we visited during our Chiang Mai field trip. Together our Grade 5 community raised more than 20000 baht. We are helping the local children to get a quality education, so that they too, can make our world better. Sharing g5 success

n January 29th, Concordian welcomed the 100th day of school by holding a Math Day celebration that spanned all of the IB departments (EY, PY, MY and DP). The focus of the day was to allow for collaboration between the departments and demonstrate Concordian’s commitment to a stellar math program. In the elementary school, the EY students traveled to the PY classrooms to participate in student designed, 100 Day themed activities. In the middle and high schools, the students in grade 6-8 participated in math games created and facilitated by by the students in grade 9-11. Quotes: Utt (K2): There were a million people at 100 day Pim (Grade 1): We can wear 100 things. I liked the egg hunt. I found 1 egg. My favorite thing was finding the number in the egg and sticking it to the chart. Tae (Grade 3): We like 100 days of school because we can teach the K2 kids and let tem be creative. We have fun together and make new friends. Peam (G5): I am 100 days more mature.
Almond (Grade 8): It’s the 100th day of school; and on this special day, the Math department is holding Concordian’s first Math day! All the PYP, MYP, and DP students gathered at the blue court in the morning for flag raising and the opening ceremony. After singing the national anthem, the ceremony began with the middle school president and vice-president were running with the math banner and then passing it onto the high school president and vice-president who ran up to the front. Mac and Tan (president and vicepresident) stood between Mr. Markus and Mr. Cal. “Math day 2018 begins!” Confetti shot into the air, sprinkles filled the sky. And thus, Math day begins! Ken (Grade 10): Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or minus hate but it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution. In India, the day December 22nd has been declared as the National Mathematics Day. Concordian International School has an early start to this with an event shining a spotlight purely on mathematics, alongside the celebration of the 100th day of school. With the full support from our wonderful Math department, the high school students have established many fun and challenging activities for the middle school students to enjoy. Ranging from quizzes to races and even throwing paper airplanes, all designed to encourage students to appreciate math for what it is and most importantly to have fun. I would like to thank the high-spirited middle school students who have brought enthusiasm and bravery onto the table, proving once again that although we, as students, are separated by years of experience, our hearts shall join as one in the presence of mathematics. Certainly we wouldn’t forget the math department for making such experience possible, for making math fun and exciting for students to discover more from. I shall now take my leave as we say goodbye to another yet memorable day of our life.

Until his death at age 89 on the 13th of October 2016, this holiday has marked as Father’s Day since His Majesty is recognized as the father of the Thai nation and remains an important public holiday in remembrance of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. At Concordian, on the 4th of December 2017, PY students had a chance to show their respect and had experienced the great show of our G5 students “Father of the land”. The performance displayed how much His Majesty devoted himself to his royal duties and carried himself gracefully from the beginning. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the father of the Thai nation who is revered and loved by the entire nation. His leadership continues to inspire and be followed and has kept
the country prosperous. He has initiated literally thousands of development projects that greatly benefited the country and its people. These projects include the Royal Rain Project, Royal Projects, New Theory on Managing Agricultural Land, and Distant Learning Television (DLTV), etc. As his Majesty was known as a gifted musician and composer, his musical talent not only fascinated the Thai people, but also made a name for the country. Internationally, his compositions have been featured by world-class orchestras at concerts on various important occasions. Therefore, the beautiful royal compositions of His Majesty; Near Dawn, Love in Spring, Love at Sundown, Falling Rain and Alexandra, were chosen and presented along with the presentation. The impressive show of PY that will be still on our mind.
