We are thrilled to share our collection of great events, trips and experiences that have occurred in the past few months and we are grateful to all the teachers, parents and students who contribute to our magazine and help us give an insight to our whole community about the great learning that takes place at Concordian. As we commence the new year, we also take time to celebrate the great achievement of our graduating Class of 2023 with our report on the Grade 12 Farewell and Valedictory Ceremony which took place in June. And, in preparation for life beyond Concordian for our Class of 2024, Concordian hosted its Global University Evening in September, hosting more than 40 prestigious institutions from around the world! Wai Kru, Thai Teacher Day, and Moon Festival at Concordian coincided on September 28th this year, each event providing a wonderful opportunity for celebration and cultural appreciation throughout the school. Our Elementary school gives us a glimpse at the Kindergarten 3 and Grade 5 graduations which took place in June, 2023 and marked important milestones for our younger learners - the passage from the Early Years to Primary and from Primary to the Middle Years respectively. We also share the One World Festival and the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten 1 students’ Musical concert from the end of the previous school year - so much talent and glee! In Secondary school, things have been very busy too - the Middle and High School student governments are back in action and ready for an exciting new year, the clubs and service learning teams are also raring to go and get started on their projects for the year. Concordian has already hosted its second Model United Nations (Concordian MUN II) and our students have already been on their annual bonding trips! Head of School Dear Concordian Community, I am delighted to welcome you back for another exciting year at Concordian. We have a wide range of activities and academic opportunities lined up for all of you, and I am eager to see what we can accomplish together. Our students continually impress me with their ability to handle any situation, displaying not just their academic skills but also their adaptability and resilience. This is the essence of what an International Baccalaureate education provides. Life is full of unexpected challenges. Whether it is applying their skills on the field, in the gymnasium, or in the swimming pool and becoming league champions, or shining on the stage as musicians, actors, dancers, or singers, whether it is to apply to their dream universities or just doing their best at the next assignment or assessment, our students are prepared to handle whatever comes their way. The skills and mindset they acquire here will serve them well in the future, and that is a point of pride for our International Baccalaureate community. What makes Concordian special is the amazing sense of community that we have built over the past 23 years. We are not just a school; we are truly a family. Your ongoing support and active participation are invaluable to maintaining the spirit that defines us.
As we move forward into this new academic year, I am confident that with our combined efforts, we will achieve great things. Thank you for your dedication to Concordian. We are not just any school; we are the CONCORDIAN Dragons, and we have so much to be proud of! GO DRAGONS! Laurent Goetschmann Head of School

Message from the
College Counseling Department Greetings Concordians! A new school year is here! Let’s embrace
this school year with a new level of excitement and anticipation. We can make this year one of our best years just by the way we choose to view it. So let’s do just that. Let’s stay positive, focused and up for the challenge. Anything worth having is worth being challenged on. That is the way you come to appreciate your successes! Yet it is also important to find a balance in your life. Schedule time for your school work while saving some time for doing those fun activities you enjoy. There are only so many hours in a day so that is why managing your time well is so valuable. In the DP Counseling Department we have started the year off running. We hosted a G12 parent afternoon meeting, took our seniors on a weekend retreat, organized a day trip for our G11 and G12 students to the Greater Bangkok Fair where they had contact with 200 plus universities from around the world. Then, turned around and hosted a Global Evening Event at Concordian with more than 40 universities. During the evening event we had two panel discussions with six university representatives sharing valuable information on Financial Aid and Scholarships while also talking about how to make a college application ‘stand out’ by including the right information and focus. We will continue to schedule university visits to the school because we recognize the value of having universities on campus to meet our students. One of the best comments we received recently from a college representative was that Concordian students ask great questions and the right kinds of questions! This shows our students are more knowledgeable than ever about planning for university. As we head into the year, we hope to host another Career Day, an online Alumni Fair, and other special events relevant to support students. In conclusion, on behalf of the department, we wish each student a successful school year and look forward to connecting with you. Have a great year ahead!
ment, already several students have submitted their first applications of the year, covering three different countries, and we’re only in Mid-October! It is always a privilege to read completed university applications as they capture the very best of Concordian students both in and outside of the classroom. Universities cannot help but be impressed!! I also personally value the trust and honesty students place in our department when students often have to be very open when working on their college essays, especially for the USA. I had the pleasure of attending the International ACAC Annual Conference in July where school counselors and university admissions staff from all over the world meet to network, share best practice and update each other on important news. The key takeaway from the conference this year, with the implications of AI and ChatGPT, is the need for students to be authentic in their applications. As you see on the pages of this edition of Impact, our students are in a wonderful position as they all have real authentic stories to tell; stories that could never be generated by AI. Farewell'23 "Thank you for inspiring us to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners. You challenged us to go above and beyond, even if it meant sacrificing our precious beauty sleep." Dear administrators, teachers, juniors, and fellow friends, It's hard to believe that for many of us, Concordian has been our home for over 16 years. We've created countless memories as a grade, and saying goodbye will be a difficult task. From the days of accidentally ingesting sand in kindergarten, to giving our teachers the shock of their lives during our senior prank, it's been quite the journey.
10 8
I want to extend my warmest thanks to all the amazing people who have supported us throughout these years. To our incredible EYP, PYP, MYP, and DP teachers, thank you for inspiring us to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners. You challenged us to go above and beyond, even if it meant sacrificing our precious beauty sleep. But hey, it's all part of the master plan to shape us into remarkable individuals.
CONCORDIAN CONCORDIAN IMPACT IMPACT -- ISSUE ISSUE 38 38
To Khun Varnnee, thank you for building this amazing learning environment, but more importantly, thank you for ingraining the spirit of integrity and compassion within the community. To Ajarn Vichitvong, thank you for your efforts in embodying the spirit of Thainess into our community, always reminding us of our precious cultural roots. To Mr. Laurent, I may still be sulking that the sleeping pods were never implemented, but I genuinely
appreciate the continuous efforts you put into improving school facilities and ensuring our well-being. And to our amazing secondary school principals, Mr. Bill, Ms. Sally, and Ms. Min, even though your lengthy and complicated policies often left me in awe, thank you for always prioritizing student safety and making sure that we are on track with our academics. A special shoutout to our counselors, Dr. Tresa, Mr. Tony, and Khun Kay. Thank you for guiding us through the daunting college application process. You not only provided us with valuable guidance but also offered much-needed mental support along the way. Of course, we mustn't forget the backbone and unsung heroes of the Concordian community - our TAs, secretaries, all staff in the offices, IT team, maintenance team, guards, maids, cooks, and gardeners. Your constant support is truly appreciated. Without your dedication and hard work, our school wouldn't be the place it is today. As we, the Class of 2023, bid farewell to Concordian, we pass the torch to the students who will soon fill our shoes. To the juniors, as you continue on your challenging journey, we'd like to offer some advice. Remember, high school is a wild ride, full of twists and turns. Embrace every opportunity, take risks (the calculated kind, of course) and challenge yourselves intellectually. But most importantly, be good people - honesty and kindness go a long way. Oh, and please, for the love of all things caffeinated, remember to get a proper night's sleep. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to your seniors. We’d be happy to help. Thank you all for the incredible memories, and let's make this farewell one to remember! Thank you! Hui Hui - Raiwin Zhang Class of 2023

Global University Evening 2023 Excitement was in the air when Concordian held its first ever
Global University Evening on campus. With many wonderful universities in attendance, 40 to be exact, coming from more than 15 countries in the world, it was truly global. Students were moving back and forth between the fair and the panel discussions. Admissions Representatives shared their expertise on how to make an application stand out. Others delved into the topic of financial aid and scholarships. The evening went by fast, maybe too fast, but you couldn’t help but feel exhilarated by all of the excitement and energy that the event brought. We want to thank our parents and students for joining us and we extend a huge ‘Thank You’ to all of the college representatives! Dr. Tresa Virankabutra Director of College Counseling

Wai Kru Ceremony
Early Years Wai Kru Ceremony This school year marked the first time that K2 and K3 students attended the Wai Kru Ceremony at the Amphitheater! And it was the First Wai Kru for Pre-K and K1 students as well.
K1 - K3 students have learned the meaning of symbolic flowers for Wai Kru and they enjoyed decorating their class pedestal trays (พานไหว้ครู) to be given to the teachers. We can see the effort and concentration they put into it. On Wai Kru Day (Thursday, 28th September), Pre-K had the Wai Kru Ceremony at the EY Gym with nearly all of their teachers around. K1 students had Wai Kru in Thai class while K2 and K3 had their Wai Kru at the Amphitheater. The students were very excited to attend the Wai Kru Ceremony and really wanted to show their respect and gratitude, and give their flowers to the teachers.

Primary Years Wai Kru Ceremony “Pajera Chariya Honti Khunuttara Nu sa Sa ka….” This Pali sentence is the beginning of the prayer for teachers which means “The teacher who educates is the most valued person”. Students recite this chant to salute their teachers on the Wai Kru day which is one of the most important ceremonies at Concordian. During Thai class, all PY students participated in making the flower trays, they helped to design together and decorate them creatively for the ceremony. The Wai Kru Ceremony at the Grand Theater started with a Thai Classical dance and music named “Thai candle light dance” (FawnLao-Seang-Thien), which is performed in honor of the Buddha and prays for blessings on the auspicious occasion. The "Wai Kru" ceremony is a significant cultural tradition at Concordian, where students pay their respects to their teachers. It is also an opportunity for PY students to show their commitment to their education and to seek blessings for their academic endeavors.

This event serves to express our sincere gratitude towards all our teachers or those who have passed on knowledge to us. All the students got to present a bouquet of a variety of flowers, which all have unique meanings, and pay respect to our teachers. One of the highlights of this event for me as the MSSG president was the opportunity to share a poem about teachers with the audience. This cultural event taught me how Wai Kru reflects the values of gratitude, respect, and unity that are central to Thai culture. Reading the poem aloud in front of my peers was not only an honor but also a humbling experience, as I felt the weight of centuries-old traditions and the importance of acknowledging the role our educators play in shaping our lives.

Moon Festival
in Elementary The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) also called the Moon
Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which this year is September 29th. It is a time for families to reunite, gathering for dinners, worshiping the moon, lighting paper lanterns, eating moon cakes and more. Concordian celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 28th. All students and staff, including teachers, office staff, custodians, gardeners and guards, received delicious mooncakes. Students enthusiastically participated in various class activities, such as listening to the famous story Chang E Ben Yue (Chang E Flying to the Moon), making crafts of lanterns and mooncakes, writing their wishes for moon worshiping and wearing pomelo peels hats, their favorite activity! Everyone knows mooncakes are the festive food of the Mid-Autumn Festival but you may wonder about the significance of pomelos. In Chinese, pomelo is “You Zi”. The word “You” has the same pronunciation of the word “bless” in Chinese while “Zi” means child(ren). Therefore placing the pomelo skins on children’s heads is a tradition believed to protect them from evil and wishing for their safety and happiness. Celebrating culture and traditions are essential components of our PYP curriculum. It is delightful to see students learningthe language and the culture of the language. We wish everyone and their family a happy Mid-Autumn Festival 祝大家中秋快乐! Ms. Ariel Wang Elementary Principal

anticipation as parents, teachers, and students gathered in the Grand Theater for the Grade 5 graduation ceremony on 21 June, 2023. It was a day of reflection, celebration, and hope for the bright futures that lay ahead. The event not only marked the transition from PYP to MYP, but also celebrated the remarkable achievements and personal growth of these young learners. The pride emanating from both parents and faculty was palpable. We had all watched these students evolve into confident and capable individuals over the years. The primary years had been a time of skill development, where students honed their academic abilities, cultivated the approaches to learning, and embraced the attributes of the learner profile – becoming inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and more. Everyone was bursting with pride as they looked at how far these students had come. The graduation ceremony was a poignant reminder of the academic growth, personal development, and character building that take place at Concordian.
It was a moment to recognize the resilience and determination these young graduates had demonstrated in their journey through the PYP. As the students received their certificates it was clear to all that they were ready for the challenges of the Middle Years Programme. With the skills and academic understandings they had acquired, they were well-prepared to face the next phase of their educational journey. We all wished them the best of luck, knowing that these students would continue to shine and make a positive impact in the years to come. The Grade 5 graduation ceremony was a beautiful testament to the power of education and personal growth that occurs in the Primary Years at Concordian. It was a day of pride, celebration, and hope, as these young learners took their next steps towards a promising future. Mr. Craig Martin Elementary Vice-Principal PY Dean of Students

PYP Back to School Week Back to School Week is undoubtedly the most important event at the beginning of a school year. It aims to start the year with a positive partnership between parents and teachers in each grade level.
The week offers parents an opportunity to listen to each teacher’s presentation and gain a better understanding of the grade-level curriculum which includes Units of Inquiry (UOI), Math, Thai language, Music, PE, Visual Arts, etc. Parents can also learn the home learning routine, classroom expectations and useful reminders. During the Q&A session, parents are encouraged to ask questions and address any concerns. From September 18th to 22nd, 2023, each day featured two grade levels presenting to parents with the Primary Years session held in the morning while the Early Years session in the afternoon. It was a great pleasure to see active parent participation during these sessions. We hope the Back to School Week has provided parents with useful information to support their child(ren)’s learning at home. We deeply value the school-home relationship and trust among teachers, students and parents. We are committed to foster positive communication this year. Ms. Ariel Wang Elementary School Principal

Welcome Back from the
Secondary Principals Welcome back! As usual, the beginning of the school year is very busy. G6 had their first field trip, G8-10 had their bonding trips, G11 the DP retreat, and G12 the College Applications trip. Plus, Week Without Walls is just around the corner and this year we are back to taking Grades 9 and 10 overseas (Cambodia and China respectively). G11 has been raising money for their School Build which will take place this year after a three-year absence. We’ve not only been busy but a lot of transitioning has been going on as well: G6 students and parents getting used to being in the Middle Years Programme (MYP), G9 students adjusting to being in high school where suddenly the grades have become real, and G11 students adapting to the pace and rigor of the Diploma Programme (DP). We also have new teachers getting to know our students, the community, and Thai culture. Fortunately, our Admin team remains the same to help guide everyone through the transitions. We should be able to run our full athletics program, as well as all our after-school
36 38
activities this year. Volleyball, basketball, football, and golf have already had matches and it looks like we are underway to retain the AISSA Cup (League Champions for Varsity sports) that we won last year. By the time you read this we will have also had our musical production, Mamma Mia! Here we Go Again completed. And speaking of musicals, students in both instrumental and choir will have special performances planned for our community later in the school year. I was looking through the calendar to see when things would slow down and it doesn’ look like they will! We have a full schedule of activities and events throughout the entire school year. It should be a fun and eventful year, please join in and enjoy everything we have planned for the community. I’m looking forward to working with everyone to make sure our students are not only academically successful but actively challenged outside the classroom as well. Mr. Bill Berry Secondary School Principal
Each year, the school opening is always an exciting moment for the whole school community! This year we finally could be “Back to Normal” as we have done in the past for many years. The classrooms are open and there are no more requirements for wearing masks and social distancing. Many school community members have been working hard to ensure a smooth opening of school for students and their families. While teachers are engaged in collaborative meetings to create and refine a challenging curriculum, we see students moving in between classes with smiling faces. It’s really nice to be back, learn and grow together. Ms. Sally Wen Secondary School Principal

and connections within our school's learning and teaching community. Interdisciplinary learning, as a focal point of our educational approach, extends beyond just grade-level Interdisciplinary Units (IDUs) and is integrated into the delivery of MYP subjects. Our dedicated and creative educators will continue to work collaboratively, exploring every way to establish meaningful interdisciplinary connections for our students.
Welcome back to another wonderful school
year! This year promises to be one filled with exciting explorations and accomplishments! Our commitment to enhancing the initiatives from previous years remains unwavering, as we strive to foster greater collaboration
In addition to our well-established standalone service program, Service as Action will serve as another potent tool, enabling us to bridge the gap between real-world issues and the engagement of our students in their subject-based learning and projects. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Targets will not only be addressed within students' service projects but will also be carefully woven into their subject-based learning experiences whenever possible. Following a comprehensive year of systematically implementing Approaches to
Learning (ATL) in the MYP, our educators have engaged in thoughtful reflection and refinement to ensure an even more structured and effective approach to foster students’ skill acquisition and development. At the heart of our educational goals, student agency remains a top priority. We are dedicated to further enhancing this aspect of learning through the continued use of the Student Learning Diary. As students continue to add their incremental achievements to their personally curated e-portfolios of this year, we expect to see the development of a comprehensive showcase of their accomplishments, both within and beyond the classroom, which will be celebrated at the student-led conferences (SLC) in April next year. This year holds great promise as we embark on these exciting educational journeys. Let’s strive to create a dynamic and enriching environment for ALL once again! Ms. Min Li Secondary School Principal

Back to School event for parents. In the afternoon, starting in the Grand Theatre, parents met the school Admin and leadership team. Each Head of Department had a chance to briefly introduce their department team members to parents. After the initial meet, students were able to lead their parents to classrooms of the many different subjects they have this year. By meeting the teachers and visiting the classrooms, parents had an opportunity to physically see how their child’s learning is progressing and supported.

Aside from meeting the teachers and visiting the classrooms, parents could also opt to watch videos of teachers to learn more about them and to grasp a picture of the curriculum in MYP and DP. It’s exciting to re-connect with people from the same school community!

breast, what is there not to love? Besides the food, I truly enjoyed this internship. I learned how to cook with a limited budget and ingredients while simultaneously learning about almost every department in the CP Superbrand Mall. We listened to more than a dozen lectures, visited many sites and universities, worked as pop-up store and Lotus staff, and developed our presentation and editing skills. This trip not only granted me knowledge of business and economics but also gave me a clearer future. It greatly assisted me when I was solidifying my list of universities, helping me erase the bias I had against going to China for my undergraduate degree. In addition, I was able to understand my friends on a deeper level and bond with other classmates that I was not all that close to. It was truly a unique experience that I would definitely do again. Grace
From this experience, I got to learn independence and team-
work in a shared living space. Next, I learned about financial management because I had to manage my own money for daily expenses such as food, leisure activities, snacks, and gifts. We visited different universities in China and got to experience what it was like learning in China with a room filled with Chinese kids. This helped some of us to really make up our minds on where we are going to attend university in the future. Matmee
This internship has expanded my perspective on China, The internship in Shanghai was a valuable experience. I enhanced my adaptability and deepened my skills for business. I left Shanghai with an unwavering enthusiasm to continue my path in the dynamic business world and embrace new opportunities. Angie
This experience has also improved my communication skills,
especially Chinese, as not only did we have to use it in everyday life, but also when communicating to the instructors or doing the assignments. After experiencing the program myself, I would also recommend the internship to others, as it was an unforgettable learning experience. Beam
learned a lot from living in one of the world’s busiest cities and working with skilled professionals. This internship opportunity helped me apply what I learned in school to real-life situations, allowing me to grow personally and professionally. My favorite part of this internship was when we got to see how different industries in China work. I think it is very interesting learning the behind-the-scenes since they work very differently than Thailand. PingPing
This internship in China was a big moment in my life. Living in
another country for a month without my family was challenging, yet it taught me a lot. This was my first time living independently in a foreign country. Everyday chores like cooking, laundry, and dishwashing became important. Although in the beginning it was hard, it taught me how to live independently with such high responsibilities. Puri 43 41

The experience during the internship with CP Group in Shanghai
allowed us to gain profound insights into the Chinese work culture, which we found to be hardworking yet healthy, with an intense level of competition. Being around individuals who have clear objectives and a relentless drive for success resonated deeply with me. This experience reaffirmed my view that Shanghai, with its technological advancement and innovation, could be an ideal place for my future endeavors. One of my most memorable moments for many of us was exploring Nanjing Road, which painted a vivid picture of Shanghai's immense population, diverse activities, and eclectic cuisine. My time at the company allowed me to understand its mission of
nurturing integrity, partnership, innovation, and passion for sustainable prosperity. I recognized the importance of collaboration and innovation in the company's success and saw opportunities for further enhancements, especially in the realm of technology and renovation efficiency. Importantly, I observed the significance of healthy relationships among employees in driving the company's triumph. My internship also solidified my belief that China, with its powerful and efficient workforce, is poised to be the world's leading superpower in the coming decades. Moreover, my active participation in discussions and interactions with lecturers proved beneficial not just for my personal growth but also for my peers. JJ
One of my favorite things about this trip was getting to see
how large companies solve problems on a day-to-day basis. It was really interesting to see how various parts of a company work together in such detail to solve complicated issues. Not only did this experience help me understand the corporate world better, but it also taught me a lot about teamwork, communication and problem solving. Minnie
Through participating in the Shanghai Internship I was able to
gain knowledge on how big corporations work, gain experience living alone without parents, and finally learn to be a leader. I gained the ability to manage time, responsibility to take care of not only chores but also work and think creatively. The skill I was able to develop the most was however communication. By living in a different country with a different culture I was not only able to practice communicating with real chinese people under their environment but also was able to learn their culture. The Shanghai Internship trip was an enriching experience that
left a lasting impact on both my personal and professional interests. Throughout the trip, not only did I gain some work experience and learn various things about business, such as how it operates and more, I also learned how to be independent. I had to cook my own food, do my own laundry and manage my own finances. Other than that, I was also able to immerse myself in Chinese culture during city visits. Risa
This entire journey has given me an unforgettable experience.
It's not merely an opportunity to deepen our understanding of business; it's also a gateway to learn Chinese culture. What truly sets this trip apart is the newfound sense of independence it offers. We were tasked not only with managing our finances but also with handling our laundry and culinary needs. Additionally, our visits to various universities have proven valuable in guiding our application decisions. BB
This trip for me was a fantastic experience, I learned many new things about how to operate a shopping mall, how to run a supermarket, etc. There were many valuable experiences to gain from this internship, including talks with leaders of various departments, and gaining valuable insights in the process. We also got to do many leisure activities such as Disneyland, the aquarium, and various city visits. We also got the opportunity to go on various university visits that were very beneficial to my college selection process as they provided me with more choices to choose from. Jade
After I completed my Shanghai internship, I learned a lot about
how businesses work. I also had the chance to sell products at Lotus and Superbrand Mall, which helped me improve my Chinese communication skills. Living with roommates for the first time made me more independent and responsible. I also had a great time exploring different places in Shanghai and trying out various Chinese foods. Memo
The internship part of the trip made me gain experience in how

businesses such as CP operate worldwide. In addition, because I had learned Chinese for 12 years or so, this is a golden opportunity to use and apply my Chinese language skills, and after the trip I felt very satisfied and comfortable when communicating in Chinese. Having visited China when I was young, I was able to also compare how much development and change has occurred in China from this visit - their technology and systems are so advanced on a level that we always had to rely on our phones to pay and interact with services. This advancement showed me what is possible in terms of technology and the potential areas Thailand can develop too. Chur

Over the course of two days, September 30th and October 1st, delegates from schools across Bangkok engaged in rigorous debate in their respective committees, confronting and attempting to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
With a range of topics to suit a variety of interests, there was truly something for everyone. While we can reflect on the conference and see that it was another success, it is important for us to recognize the wonderful team behind all of this: Melody, Kyla, Burger, Pearl (our Concordian MUN Secretariat), all of the pages and the press team, the nurses, IT department, Khun Alisa, Khun Aoh and the secretary team, and Mr. Laurent. This amazing conference could not have been brought to life without their hard work and commitment to creating a memorable experience for all participants. From human rights to AI, from AI to economic crisis, from history to present, delegates had the opportunity to debate pressing issues in society. The theme for this conference is “A World in Motion”. "A World in Motion" symbolizes not only the constant evolution of global affairs but also the responsibility we hold as global citizens to keep the momentum of progress moving forward. Being in the founding team of Concordian MUN, it has been a great pleasure seeing the growth of the conference. On behalf of the secretariat team, we would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen. This year there will be more to the house competitions than just athletic competitions, such as Dodgeball, Basketball, Capture the Flag, Football, etc., we plan to add academic house competitions as well, so look out for those. We also aim for Spirit Week during Halloween, Christmas, and other holidays to have even more creative challenges and activities for students to participate in. Clubs Chess Club
The Chess club began as a small idea I had in mind when the Chess craze took over the world last December, but has since grown to unimaginable heights! Thanks to our advisor, Mr. Vijay, and his constant support, we have held several meetings which have helped our players improve exponentially! In particular, special events such as the simuls game against Ninja, or the upcoming simuls against Mr. Vijay are events we all look forward to and have the most fun at, so I encourage everyone to join the chess club so they can partake in such fun activities! Not only does it aid one’s application, but it also serves to provide fun and learning opportunities so that people can improve alongside their peers!
Biotech Society
Tsheyang (G12) Chess Club President
Welcome to another academic year! This year, a brand new club that is available for all students has opened up! Bio-Tech Society is not only a club that entertains the most fascinating ideas about future prospects in human biology, but a club that will bring individuals who share the same passion together to achieve excellence. As a discussion-based club, we host meetings to discuss the purpose, function and ethicality of various technologies. However, the club is also insanely fun, with activities like games in each meeting to ensure everyone has learned something new! Biotechnology is one of the most intriguing branches of biology, and it has become a very real possibility for it to become even more prevalent. So, what is stopping you from learning more about it? You don’t need to be extremely passionate about biotechnology, because anyone with a curious mind and thirst for knowledge is welcome in our new club! 50 52 CONCORDIAN IMPACT - ISSUE 38
We will be discussing three topics this year, including: biosensors, genetic engineering, and 3D bioprinting. However, you are always free to explore whatever you want! Moreover, our officer team is planning some upcoming conferences, so stay tuned! Now, what are you waiting for? If you are currently in Grade 9 or above, come and pop in; we’d love to have you! Hope to see you there! Sheen (G10) Bio-Tech Society President,
Crisis Relief Club
Our first project was a big success, and it was all thanks to the
wonderful support from our school community. We managed to collect 145,526 baht to help people in Turkey who were affected by the recent earthquakes. But we're just getting started! We have big dreams. At Crisis Relief Fund, We want to help the people that had the rug pulled underneath their feet, those who lost everything in an instant, and those who seek the most support. We hope the community will be more active and engaging when it comes to helping the less fortunate. We believe that when we all work together, we can really make a difference and help communities heal and grow stronger!
Student Life and Service
As we keep going, we're full of hope and excitement for what we can achieve. Our newly established club hopes to inspire and create change amongst the younger generation, not only to spread awareness but also to think of innovative ways to provide support. We want you to be a part of this journey, to help us build a world where giving is a way of life, one small step at a time. At this current moment in time, Moroccan people faced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, leaving over 5000 citizens either injured or deceased. We hope to provide our help and hope the community will show enthusiasm. Tsheyang (G12) President of Crisis Relief Fund
World Scholar’s Cup
The World Scholar’s Cup is an international academic competition
that has a yearly-updated theme and curriculum with six subjects, and features four main events: Debate, where scholars in teams of three debate over curriculum-relevant motions; the Scholar’s Challenge - a multiple choice test that evaluates scholars’ knowledge of the curriculum; the Writing Challenge - where scholars are challenged to write a thoughtful piece based on six prompts that correspond to each of the curriculum’s subjects; and the Scholar’s Bowl - a teambased event where scholars have to figure out questions that use different relevant medias and make connections between subjects before time runs out. Every year, thousands of students around the world participate and students from Concordian have done very well at the Bangkok Global Round that was held in September 2023. The World Scholar’s Cup club here at Concordian is primarily focused on tutoring younger students in the MYP that are attending the World Scholar’s Cup, however we encourage our members to compete at the rounds too if they are able. If you are interested in joining the World Scholar's Cup this year, please email imboonc_2027@concordian.org or burgers_2026@concordian.org (or you can wait for our registration after the winter break).
BarriersMUN
Inequality is a rampant issue everywhere and educational inequality
is more apparent to us as students. BarrierMUN seeks to tackle this fundamental issue through conjoining the passion of a handful of students with a will to spread what they enjoy so greatly. Currently Model United Nations (or MUN) is effectively limited to private and international schools, indicative of the lackluster and impoverished public education system. BarrierMUN is an initiative that aims to increase accessibility to Model United Nations - an activity that allows students to simulate policy making in the UN through the representation of different countries and perspectives, namely as a means to expand access to relevant activities that generate interest in civil debate, international relations, communication, critical thinking, and research. We started off with the building blocks of translating rules and procedures, along with basic resources to train our first batch of participants in an online webinar session. Now we are in the midst of organizing an online conference to allow for participants to use the skills they have gained. In the future, we look forward to increasing the accessibility of our resources in tandem with the overarching goal of affording more students the opportunity to participate in MUN. Recently, in our endeavor to raise money for our in-person conference, we submitted an application to the Global Youth Action Fund set up by the International Baccalaureate. As one of over 500 applicants to the fund, we had to submit a 3 minute video, slide pitch deck, and answer questions, outlining our initiative and intentions with the grant proceeds. On the day the results were released, I remember anxiously waiting and frantically checking my email every so often. Finally at about 7:00 PM, I vividly remember the elation as I saw an email by the grant organizers detailing that we had been one of the groups chosen, followed by a few joyous phone calls announcing the news to the rest of the team. As a result, we received 2,000 USD and free admission to a social entrepreneurship course the IB had set up. We are extremely grateful to have received the grant, and look forward to putting this newly earned capital to good use.

Our initiative has students from over ten schools from all over Thailand, and is a testament to the tight knit and resourceful MUN community. Concordian is the school with the most members in BarrierMUN; as such I would like to give a special shoutout to Kenji (G11), Mily (G11), Mei (G10), Peam (G11), Doudou (G11), Kenjung (G8), Peipei (G10), Bow (G10), Otto (G10), and Henry (G10). Without everyone's hard work, what the organization has achieved would not be possible. We look forward to breaking down the barriers to MUN; the next chapter for BarrierMUN is being written.

MYP
Service Program Grade 6 Service We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead with G6 Service. During our
upcoming first meeting, students will demonstrate their enthusiasm and prior knowledge of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) gained from last year's PYP Exhibition. They will express their aspirations to contribute to specific SDGs in their future service projects, fostering a strong connection between service learning and action. G6 Service provides students with a unique opportunity to apply the skills they acquire in the classroom to real-world situations, ultimately making a positive impact on their community. This year, students will have the autonomy to select their own projects and form teams, taking full responsibility for meeting project deadlines. This experience will encourage them to collaborate effectively and exercise their creative and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, they will learn valuable time management skills. In addition to working on their individual projects, students will have the chance to share their initiatives with one another and provide feedback and guidance to fellow teams. This collaborative environment will help them develop both giving and receiving advice gracefully. The G6 Service team eagerly anticipates the innovative ideas our students will bring to support the communities around us. Ms. Tashia Mante G6 Service Leader

Grade 10 Service
Grade 10 is a very busy year, with students working on their Personal Projects,
studying hard for their regular classes, and looking ahead to the IB Diploma. With all this in mind, and with a focus on increasing the amount of direct service Grade 10 students were undertaking while simultaneously decreasing their time spend planning (so they could focus on other areas mentioned above), G10 Service for this year entails students signing up to one of our twelve service clubs, all which get out into the community several times throughout the year. Below is a brief introduction to these clubs. Mr. Ben, Student Life Coordinator
Habitat For Humanity
Hear to Heart
You Can Save
Habitat For Humanity club is affiliated with the international NGO of the same name, and the main purpose of the club is to help build housing for the underprivileged. The club goes out into the community to actively build structures under the guidance of the organization, and has been on “site builds” to locations such as Pathum Thani and Chachoengsao over the past year.
Hear to Heart’s stated purpose is to create a non-profit business and organization to support the underprivileged people who are suffering from various health problems by creating accomplishable actions. They are involved in fundraising for underprivileged communities, which they then visit and help in various type of direct service initiatives and activities.
The You Can Save club is in partnership with the OSI company, and aims to raise funds to buy medical equipment for underfunded and rural hospitals. The club aims to be a medium of doing charity between Thai companies and hospitals by creating campaigns with Thai companies, and in the past they have collaborated with Happymate, Koh Kae, Euro Cake and more.

MYP
Service Day Service is an integral part of both the
MYP, and our school community, with students undertaking service projects in their grade’s service programs, from Grade 6 to 10, but also with an increased focus on Service As Action which entails students finding service connections in their regular classes. At the end of the last academic year, on June 22nd, 2023 MYP students participated in the inaugural MYP Service & Community Appreciation Day. The day was divided into three clear, and different sessions - Action, Sharing and Fun. The morning session was all about Action. During this session, MYP students rotated between four activities: sorting recycling, packing care packages to be delivered to a community in need in Bang Na, interacting with a service-centered art installation, and writing thank you notes to every member of the Concordian community working on campus. The recycling activity saw students help teachers clear recyclables from their classrooms, as well as sorting out recyclable material from their lockers, and recyclable materials that had been collected throughout the year.
58 56 CONCORDIAN IMPACT - ISSUE 38
The care package activity saw students help one of our high school service clubs, Hear to Heart, pack bags with food and toiletries which were then delivered to an underprivileged community in Bang Na. All the products that were packed had been bought from funds that Hear to Heart had raised throughout the year.
Student Life and Service
The art installation activities saw students write notes centered around the Concordian values dragons. Students recalled times when they’d seen someone displaying one of these values, wrote a note about it, and then tied these notes to an art installation using coloured string correlating to that coloured dragon. And the final activity of the morning saw students writing thank you notes to all members of the Concordian community working on campus, from teachers to administration, from security guards to gardiners, from technicians to drivers - all members were represented, and students had a chance to thank everyone for making our school what it is. The middle session was all about Sharing. During this session, students rotated between three areas, with the showpiece being the Grade 9 Service Exhibition in which the Grade 9 students exhibited their service projects to all other MYP students. All Grade 9 students had booths where they were able to showcase their projects, and discuss how their projects impacted their chosen communities. In addition to the Grade 9 service exhibition, service projects from the other MYP grades (six, seven, eight and ten) were displayed throughout the exhibition area for everyone to see.
be part of service, whereas the teachers sharing their experiences showed the students that service doesn’t stop when you graduate from high school - it can be a lifelong endeavor. The final activity of the middle session saw a special guest speaker, Mr. Daniel Bucher, the head chef from TopGolf. Mr. Bucher spoke to all of our students about sustainability in the workplace, in particular, sustainable food production and minimizing waste. He led an interactive lecture in the Grand Theatre, and students were able to ask questions while he informed them about his passion for sustainability, and the many service ventures he takes part in both at TopGolf, and in his personal life. The final session was all about Fun. During this session, the students took part in a dodgeball competition, with the culmination being a students vs. teachers charity match which raised funds for a small local charity. While this activity was mostly about fun, it also showed students how to be creative when thinking about fundraising for their service projects.

Bonding Trip @ Khao Yai On Thursday, October 5 , 2023, we, the G8 students, all th
boarded the bus for a 3-hour-long journey to Khao Yai. Despite the rainy weather and all of us being soaking wet, our spirits were high as we chatted about all the activities we were looking forward to on our very first bonding trip. Finally, we arrived at the mindfulness center and were blown away by its beauty. There were huge fields of grass and lots of trees and flowers; we could tell how it was made to embrace the nature of Khao Yai. After that, we all scattered into our room groups to unpack our bags and head out for dinner. The food at the mindfulness center was incredible; everyone loved the roasted chicken and fried rice. At long last, after dinner, we finally had our first activity of the bonding trip. We all headed over to the function room, and the counselors took over. The activity had everyone organized into two circles: an outer circle and an inner circle. The inner circle would rotate, allowing everyone to have a chance to chat with each other and catch up on everyone's lives. On the second day, we first headed to the lake at the mindfulness center to do walking meditation, where we would walk around the lake three times while reflecting on our lives about different things each time. After that, we went to the cafeteria to have yet another incredible breakfast before departing to the Khao Yai Art Museum where we could enjoy art and take photos with our favorite artworks. Every time we admired a new artwork, we always saw different meanings behind it. The sculptures there were also incredibly intricate, and every sculpture had a unique story and meaning.

After admiring the artwork, we went back to the mindfulness center to hang out for a bit and have another wonderful lunch. In the afternoon, we headed out to our next destination, Midwinter, where we learned about zero food waste and got to make our own pizza. We also got to enjoy a wonderful buffet dinner! Finally, we headed back to the mindfulness center and took on the straw challenge in the function room where we were put into groups and made meaningful structures out of just straws and then shared the ideas behind our structures with everyone.
This was the day we all dreaded. It was the day we headed home; however, we could proudly say that the time spent here would always have a special meaning in our hearts, as we got to bond with each other and know each other even better than before. Everyone would like to thank the people, teachers, staff, and admin who made this trip happen, and we hope future eighth graders will enjoy this trip as much as we did. Kenta G8C

Bonding Trip @ Khao Yai The majority of us see a rotation of the same faces everyday. On the second day, we headed to the Child Development The same set of people at home, at school, and in our respective social circles. The same friends and classmates who, for the most part, have remained the same since kindergarten. Prior to this trip, I had never really considered the possibility of not knowing my classmates by heart. Of course, growing up and spending more than half of my time around these people, one would think I would have been more than well-acquainted, if not practically best friends, with them. As it turns out, I was severely wrong with my assumptions. I, in fact, did not know all that much about my “friends”, to the point that some of the things I discovered during this trip took me by surprise and completely altered my perception of them. Although now in retrospect, I can confidently say that I have developed a much deeper understanding of the people around me, and hopefully, will continue to do so after this trip, which took place on September 7-9, 2023 Upon arrival at the True Mindfulness Center in Khao Yai on the first day, Khun Varnnee had us participate in a “Speed Chatting” activity where each of us talked to another person one-on-one briefly before moving onto the next. Through this activity, I got the opportunity to converse with a few people I hadn’t spoken to in a while, or people I wouldn’t have struck up a conversation with of my own will in school. This was followed by an activity called “Candle Sharing”, where each of us shared some personal things about ourselves to the rest of the grade in one big circle before heading to bed.

Center, where we were split into groups and had to care for preschool kids for the duration of our visit. This activity reiterated the importance of patience and understanding when dealing with young children, especially because each of their characters were so varied and they were at different stages of development. Being surrounded by the kind of bubbliness and innocence that is rarely present in our lives now, I was reminded of the fact that nobody is born a “bad” person. At some point in the past, we all resembled these children and it is simply our unique circumstances that have shaped and molded us differently. On this trip, we bonded and reflected. We learned the value of understanding and gratitude. We discovered the benefits of collaboration and mindfulness. Overall, it was an invaluable experience and I truly look forward to whatever joint trips are in store for us in the future. Sophia, G10I

an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blended learning and bonding, leaving a lasting impact on all of us. The trip commenced with a visit to a Deaf school, which not only exposed us to the world of social responsibility but also encouraged empathy and understanding. We witnessed the incredible resilience and talent of the students, learned animal sign language which was entertaining, reminding us of the importance of inclusivity and the value of giving back to our community. Throughout the retreat, our discussions on university choices, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), TOK (Theory of Knowledge), and EE (Extended Essay) were not just informative but also inspiring. We found ourselves engaging in meaningful conversations about our futures, our academic pursuits, and our personal growth. Watching a profoundly motivational movie together added another layer of inspiration, leaving us with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
While the retreat was an enriching experience, there was a tinge of disappointment that we couldn't fully enjoy the beautiful Pattaya beaches due to certain restrictions. Nevertheless, the retreat extended beyond academics, immersing us in a vibrant atmosphere of laughter and unity. Mr. Clynt's drama activities had us in fits of laughter, forging connections that are bound to endure long after our IB journey. The comfortable hotel accommodations and delectable cuisine provided the ideal setting for relaxation and further strengthening our bonds. In summary, the G11 IB Retreat in Pattaya offered a well-rounded experience that not only deepened our understanding of the IB program but also solidified the relationships within our group, creating a cherished memory set to last for years to come. Best regards, Ty Bam Fern

Grade 12
College Weekend Starting off the school year with our Seniors, we headed to
Khao Yai for a 2-night/3-day event on August 31-September 2, 2023. It gave the counselors - Dr. Tresa and Mr. Tony - and our students a chance to reconnect after the summer break and to revisit the application process that started in Grade 11. Concordian’s Founding Director, Khun Varnnee, our DP Chemistry teacher, Mr. Paul and our wonderful PHE teacher, Khun Nui also joined our event and contributed actively. Our great support staff, Ms. Fanta, Ms. Mint, Ms. Aoh and our nurse Ms. Tai were a valuable part of our trip. Even though the time spent together was taxing at times, as we discussed serious topics, students still found time to bond with one another and share in laughter. Dr. Tresa

rable tournament victory. Even though they faced a setback with one loss, the Dragons displayed resilience by bouncing back and ultimately soaring to the top. From the very onset of the tournament, it was clear that the Dragons were a force to be reckoned with. The team showcased a blend of talent, ball movement, and a tenacious defense. Opponents often found it challenging to break through the Dragons' defensive wall, and on the other end of the court, the Dragons' swift passes and sharp shooting often left spectators in awe. The solitary loss during the tournament was a turning point for the team. Rather than letting it dampen their spirits, the Dragons used it as a lesson. The defeat became a source of motivation, a reminder that every game requires their absolute best. During the subsequent matches, the Dragons played with renewed vigor, proving that champions are not defined by the battles they lose but by how they recover. Parents, teachers, and fans were on the edge of their seats during the final match. Every basket was met with thunderous applause, and every defensive stop was a testament to the hard work the Dragons had put in throughout the season. “When former students return for the annual Alumni Soccer Tournament, and join together to play "the beautiful game" with current students, teachers & staff, plus parents, the result is a deep sense of appreciation for our Concordian community and the sense of shared joy & respect we all have for one another. This year, the Alumni Team was composed of former students from 6 different graduating classes, and they proved triumphant in the end, narrowly edging out the 2 faculty/staff teams as well as the team of current students, and 2 parent teams. The day concluded with celebrations over shared pizza, gratitude for the cooperative weather, and eager anticipation for next year's repeat of this event!” Mr. Jamie

Interview with
Alice & Taylan Leenanuchai's Family Our family chose to have our children activities. I have been impressed with the study at Concordian because the IB teaching system they use is recognised as of high international standard. The system encourages children to think logically. As well as standard academic subjects, children also learn three languages which opens their minds to other cultures, different ways of thinking and offers them important communication skills and potentially, many good future international opportunities. Emphasis is also placed on teaching good manners and Thai culture. During the many years my children have studied here they have fun, interact well with other children and are happy with their studies and various
teachers and various personnel. I have also developed friendships with other parents and guardians. It's a lovely community. Children learn in a well-rounded way and besides academic activities are still interested in the wider world, things around us, being considerate and helping others as well. The atmosphere within the school is warm and feels safe. School personnel are professional and friendly, and students are treated like family members. I congratulate and thank all staff and associates at Concordian on the good work and high standards and would encourage them to maintain the high standards and strive for further achievements.

Interview with
Phaak & Phoom Tumsaroj's Family
One important thing that our family
and all parents prioritize is their child's education, to prepare them for this challenging world. Concordian International School addresses this by offering an IB program that fully nurtures each child's potential with three languages: Chinese, English, and Thai. Furthermore, the school provides many activities supporting children’s learning including music, education, art, science, and sports. The school has many sports facilities such as an Olympic-sized 50-meter swimming pool, a football field, badminton courts, an indoor gymnasium, and much more. We can feel that the school's community and environment are filled with love and compassion. The management, teachers, and staff are always more than ready to listen and support children in all aspects, creating a warm atmosphere.
As a family, we feel happy and proud to be part of the Concordian family. Go Dragons!

Alumni Fun Night Party It is traditionally known that Concordian hosts an annual
alumni reunion, the Alumni Fun Night, to touch base with the alumni and bring them back together to catch up, reconnect, celebrate how far they have all come, and relive the nostalgic yet good old days with their former classmates. After 3 years of Covid-19 regulations, we were finally able to resume this tradition on July 15, 2023. This year’s alumni reunion was remarkably different from any other reunions because we extended our invitation to not just the alumni but their former Concordian friends and partners as well, thus, making this reunion as crowded as ever with close to 160 guests (excluding staff and teachers) at the event. The Best Dressed Stars Competition under the theme “Tropical Summer Night” took place for the best dressed alumni representative to walk on the runway, creating a spectacular scene and garnering the audience attention and cheers. The most votes for the King and Queen of the Best Dressed Stars were Act and Fiona from the Class of 2023! Another game that bonded the alumni to work together was the Alumni Bingo game where everyone had to help match a series of alumni baby and teenage photos - the winning group was the Class of 2019 who got Concordian dragons as prizes! The Alumni Fun Night isn’t just a meetup or a simple reunion, it’s a bonding event for generations of graduates to expand their circles, meet plenty of new, inspiring and supportive people within their professional sectors, exchange stories of their successes and obstacles, and gain a few tips, golden nuggets of advice, and contacts.
