Although this year was filled with challenges to overcome, students and teachers in the MYP once again embraced learning

opportunities with a focus on the quality and the variety of experiences. Even though our time was divided between online and on campus learning, the MYP’s structure of conceptual, skills-based learning allowed us to thrive and showed us learning takes place in many spaces and in many ways. Enjoy the following showcase of learning for 2021-22!

Tang & Song Dynasty This event was organized during the second quarter for Unit

2 Chinese learning by G6-G10 Pre LL & LL students. Students created a performance to showcase their understanding about the Chinese poetry of Tang and Song Dynasty. The goal of this project is to deliver the positive spirit of Chinese poems, which is to encourage the people to understand the true meaning of different poems and connect the poems with their real life experiences. Design students worked on a unit oriented to bird’s wildlife conservation. The final products are macrame hanging planters, feeders, or nests that provide food and shelter to bring back local birds to our school. Students researched how to use appropriate sustainable textiles to maintain wildlife in urbanized areas. They sketched and designed a plan to construct a textile structure, and they created individualized clay beads, or they painted wooden beads to add additional aesthetic features. They learned knotting techniques to generate a diversity of patterns. The creation of the product required five to six hours. The macrame hanging baskets are unique, beautiful, and functional, holding around 1-to-2-kilogram pots according to the design specifications. All our G6 are proud of their work and new knotting skills! G6 Design Ms. Veronica

Fun with Baking During the second quarter, Grade 6 math students learned to

follow a recipe and apply their math knowledge about fractions and unit conversions to make two batches of chocolate chip cookies. We had a lot of fun learning how to measure the ingredients properly from YouTube. We also had to do some math in order to make two batches when the recipe is only for one batch of cookies. We learned to look at the results to figure out what could have gone wrong if our cookies did not come out as expected. We were pleasantly surprised that the cookies were very delicious. It was a success! G6 Math Ms. Linh

Digital and Physical Interactive Notebooks

Grade

6 students have been using interactive notebooks throughout the year which differ from traditional note-taking because students “interact” with knowledge, experiences, and feedback. This model allows students to create a product that merges the insights from their learning process with information, instead of just copying down notes from a book or the board. Interactive notebooks have two parts: • Input: information new to the students guided by the teacher. It includes notes taken in class, a video or a text, and graphic organizers. • Output: students’ application of thinking skills to “interact” with the knowledge provided to demonstrate understanding. It includes foldables, data tables, data analysis, and reflections.

G6 Math & PHE IDU All’s Well that Trends Well

For

the third quarter, the students learned vocabulary relating to physical fitness and collected data on physical fitness activities like push-ups, squats, and sit-ups in PHE and they used their knowledge of statistics learned in Math to explore two questions: 1) Are there any differences in the performance of boys and girls in individual fitness activities? 2) Are there any differences in my performance on the fitness activities? Nervous because it was the first time they had to give a 5-6 minute presentation, they all walked away with an appreciation of how analyzing data could give them answers to questions. They also reflected on how much they have improved on different fitness activities. It was impressive how well students were able to use technology such as Google Sheets to sort data, create tables and create graphs. G6 Math & PHE IDU Ms. Linh and Ms. Diane

G7 Science & PHE IDU Heartbeats of Sweat Homeostasis - any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to internal and external changes. How do our bodies maintain homeostasis?

For the third quarter, the students used their understanding of body systems from science and their skills to measure performance from PHE, to track their heart rate over several weeks. In working through this IDU, students gained insight into their physical health, specifically focusing on how their bodies react, change, and develop based on their fitness level. The students developed ideas on the connections between fitness and overall well-being.

G7 Counseling “Psychologists have scientifically proven that one of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness in your life is how much gratitude you show.”

G9 Counseling On

May 6, 2022, Grade 9 explored how to empower our emotional intelligence through self-awareness. We discussed how researchers now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence may be more significant than their IQ and that it is a greater predictor of success, quality of relationships, and overall happiness.

On March 18, 2022, the Grade 7 counseling class discussed how

Students watched the TEDx video “EQ from the perspective of a expressing gratitude can greatly impact our overall happiness. teenager,” and then reflected on what they had learned. Students then proceeded to write a letter to someone special in their lives; who contributes significantly to their well-being; who they are really thankful for, but to whom they haven’t expressed that in a while. Here are student reflections from the activity: “At first I didn’t know what to write and who to write it to. After I started writing the letter I appreciated them even more. I never noticed how much they have helped me and how much I appreciated them.” “I felt happy because I never really showed any gratitude for someone before.” “I felt warm and grateful inside, and I felt happy that I was able to make someone feel important.” G7 & G9 Counseling Ms. Yatima

The missing chair activity During the 4th quarter, Grade 9 students played the missing

chair activity in Thai LL class. They learned to connect skills, experiences, and emotions when doing activities with the content of the short story they studied. Then they work in groups to brainstorm interpretations of short stories about battling obstacles and finding happiness in life for presenting it to the front of the class. Dissection Labs In Grade 7 the students were able to put their critical thinking and practical dissection skills into practice with two different laboratory activities. A dissection of the humble chicken wing (try it at home!) provided the students with an opportunity to see how the muscular-skeletal system works to enable movement. Similarly, the dissection of the whole fish allowed them to compare the body systems of that animal with more familiar examples. To assist Mr. Barry, Mr. Mike and ms. Zohe, we had the talents of all of our Secondary School lab technicians: Ms. Fern, Ms. May, and Ms. Ye. G7 Science Ms. Mike

of self-expression from language and adaptation from design come together in this exploration of the graphic novel. Students use their exploration of visual symbols, negative space and camera angles to adapt the characterization, mood, conflict, and theme found in one text into the development of a new product. They researched various comic styles and developed their scenes using paper and digital techniques. G8 English & Design IDU Mr. Luke W and English teachers

Podcasting In

Grade 8 science class this year we had the students create podcasts for each of our major topics, including areas like Chemical Bonding and Energy in Ecosystems. The students learned a lot while creating their podcast, and then could also listen to each other’s podcasts for enhancement of their understanding as well as review for assessments. Some of the podcasts are broadcast-worthy and impressed us with their high quality! G9 Thai and Chinese IDU G10 I&S and ARTS IDU Thai and Chinese are Family

Café Voltaire

In quarter 3, Grade 9 students engaged in the Thai & Chinese IDU In where they learned about the mixture of cultures, societies and lifestyles from both Thai and Chinese class to find out the connections between the two cultures. This extended students’ understanding on how Chinese immigrants have impacted Thai society. Moreover, students also thought about their identities and beliefs of their own under the influence of globalization. In the end of this Unit, students created a poster to showcase their understanding of the connections between Thai and Chinese cultures.

Grade 10 students completed an interdisciplinary unit exploring the relationship between society and art. They learned about the Great War in I&S and each Arts discipline investigated the impact conflict has on the creation and performance of music, visual arts and drama. The learning culminated in the Cafe Voltaire performance, a nod to the Cabaret Voltaire where arts and politics took stage in 1916, and students were able to showcase the synthesis of their learning.

Another meaningful learning experience was an interview with G9 Thai & Chinese IDU Ms. Jeanne’s father, “The Great War: memories of my dad from Ms. Rong his grandfather” about life after the Great War in the village of Villiers-Saint-Georges. A special thank you to Ms. Bo for editing the video and to Mr. Alessio for the translations. G10 Visual Art - Ms. Jeanne
